Abstract
Half-sandwich zirconium(IV) and hafnium(IV) complexes with amidoborane and hydride ligands have been isolated in the stoichiometric reactions of mono(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)metal alkyl and amido derivatives with the amine-boranes NHR2BH3 (R2 = H2, Me2, HtBu). Treatment of the tris(trimethylsilylmethyl) complexes [M(η5-C5Me5)(CH2SiMe3)3] with NH3BH3 (3 equiv) gives the seven-coordinate species [M(η5-C5Me5)(NH2BH3)3] (M = Zr (1), Hf (2)) with three κ2N,H-NH2BH3 ligands. The tris(neophyl) [M(η5-C5Me5)(CH2CMe2Ph)3] or tris(dimethylamido) [M(η5-C5Me5)(NMe2)3] derivatives react with NHMe2BH3 (≥3 equiv) to afford bis(dimethylamidoborane) hydride complexes [M(η5-C5Me5)H(NMe2BH3)2] (M = Zr (3), Hf (4)) via thermally unstable [M(η5-C5Me5)(NMe2BH3)3] species. The reaction of [M(η5-C5Me5)(NMe2)3] and NH2tBuBH3 (≥4 equiv) affords analogous mixed amidoborane hydride derivatives [M(η5-C5Me5)H(NHtBuBH3)(NMe2BH3)] (M = Zr (5), Hf (6)) with κ2N,H-NHtBuBH3 and κ3N,H,H-NMe2BH3 ligands. The addition of NHR2BH3 (≥1 equiv) on the mono(dimethylamido) complexes [M(η5-C5Me5)Cl2(NMe2)] in hexane leads to the precipitation of the ionic compounds [(NHR2)2BH2][{M(η5-C5Me5)Cl2}2(μ-H)3] (R2 = Me2, M = Zr (7), Hf (8); R2 = HtBu, M = Zr (9), Hf (10)). Molecular hydride species [Cl2(η5-C5Me5)M(μ-Cl)(μ-H)2M(η5-C5Me5)Cl(NH2tBu)] (M = Zr (11), Hf (12)) could be isolated from mixtures of complexes [M(η5-C5Me5)Cl2(NMe2)] and lower ratios of NH2tBuBH3. The zirconium complex 11 decomposes in solution to give the mononuclear tert-butylamido derivative [Zr(η5-C5Me5)Cl2(NHtBu)] (13) along with other byproducts.

Abstract
Organometallic sandwich complexes are versatile molecular systems that have been recently employed for single-molecule manipulation and spin sensing experiments. Among related organometallic compounds, the mixed-sandwich S = 1/2 complex (η8-cyclooctatetraene)(η5-cyclopentadienyl)titanium, here [CpTi(cot)], has attracted interest as a spin qubit because of the long coherence time. Here the structural and chemical properties of [CpTi(cot)] on Au(111) are investigated at the monolayer level by experimental and computational methods. Scanning tunneling microscopy suggests that adsorption occurs in two molecular orientations, lying and standing, with a 3:1 ratio. XPS data evidence that a fraction of the molecules undergo partial electron transfer to gold, while our computational analysis suggests that only the standing molecules experience charge delocalization toward the surface. Such a phenomenon depends on intermolecular interactions that stabilize the molecular packing in the monolayer. This orientation-dependent molecule-surface hybridization opens exciting perspectives for selective control of the molecule-substrate spin delocalization in hybrid interfaces.

Abstract
Titanium(III) complexes containing unprecedented (NH2 BH2 NHBH3 )2- and {N(BH3 )3 }3- ligands have been isolated, and their structures elucidated by a combination of experimental and theoretical methods. The treatment of the trimethyl derivative [TiCp*Me3 ] (Cp*=η5 -C5 Me5 ) with NH3 BH3 (3 equiv) at room temperature gives the paramagnetic dinuclear complex [{TiCp*(NH2 BH3 )}2 (μ-NH2 BH2 NHBH3 )], which at 80 °C leads to the trinuclear hydride derivative [{TiCp*(μ-H)}3 {μ3 -N(BH3 )3 }]. The bonding modes of the anionic BN fragments in those complexes, as well as the dimethylaminoborane group trapped on the analogous trinuclear [{TiCp*(μ-H)}3 (μ3 -H)(μ3 -NMe2 BH2 )], have been studied by X-ray crystallography and density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Abstract
Low-valent early transition metals are often intrinsically highly reactive as a result of their strong propensity toward oxidation to more stable high-valent states. Harnessing these highly reducing complexes for productive reactivity is potentially powerful for C-C bond construction, organic reductions, small-molecule activation and many other reactions that offer orthogonal chemoselectivity and/or regioselectivity patterns to processes promoted by late transition metals. Recent years have seen many exciting new applications of low-valent metals through building new catalytic and/or multicomponent reaction manifolds out of classical reactivity patterns. In this Review, we survey new methods that employ early transition metals and invoke low-valent precursors or intermediates in order to identify common themes and strategies in synthesis and catalysis.

Abstract
More than ten years ago, Manners and coworkers published the first experimental study on the efficiency of titanocene to catalyze the dehydrocoupling of dimethylamine borane (DMAB, T. Clark, C. Russell and I. Manners, J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2006, 128, 9582-9583). Several experimental investigations have shown that a two-step mechanism leads to the formation of a cyclic diborazane (Me2N-BH2)2via the linear diborazane (HNMe2-BH2-NMe2-BH3). This finding stood in contradiction to the following theoretical investigations of the reaction pathway. Herein, using dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT-D), we propose an energetically favored reaction mechanism in perfect agreement with the experimental findings. It is shown that van der Waals interactions play a prominent role in the reaction pathway. The formation of 3-center 2-electron interactions, classical dihydrogen bonds, and non-classical dihydrogen bonds was identified with the help of topological and localized orbital approaches.

Abstract
Precatalysts active for the dehydropolymerisation of primary amine-boranes are generally based on mid or late transition metal. We have found that the activity of the precatalyst system formed from CpR2TiCl2 and 2nBuLi towards the dehydrogenation of the secondary amine-borane Me2NH·BH3, to yield the cyclic diborazane [Me2N-BH2]2, increases dramatically with increasing electron-donating character of the cyclopentadienyl rings (CpR). Application of the most active precatalyst system (CpR = η-C5Me5) to the primary amine-borane MeNH2·BH3 enabled the first synthesis of high molar mass poly(N-methylaminoborane), [MeNH-BH2] n , the BN analogue of polypropylene, by an early transition metal such as catalyst. Significantly, unlike other dehydropolymerization precatalysts for MeNH2·BH3 such as [Ir(POCOP)H2], skeletal nickel, and [Rh(COD)Cl]2, the Ti precatalyst system was also active towards a range of substrates including BzNH2·BH3 (Bz = benzyl) yielding high molar mass polymer. Moreover, in contrast to the late transition metal catalysed dehydropolymerisation of MeNH2·BH3 and also the Ziegler-Natta polymerisation of olefins, studies indicate that the Ti-catalyzed dehydropolymerization reactions proceed by a step-growth rather than a chain-growth mechanism.

Abstract
The thermal decomposition of group 4 trimethylsilylmethyl derivatives [M(η5-C5Me5)(CH2SiMe3)3] (M = Ti (1), Zr (2), Hf (3)) in solution and their reactivity with N,N-dimethylamine-borane were investigated. Heating of hydrocarbon solutions of compounds 2 and 3 at 130-200 °C results in the elimination of SiMe4 and the clean formation of the singular alkylidene-alkylidyne zirconium and hafnium compounds [{M(η5-C5Me5)}3{(μ-CH)3SiMe}(μ3-CSiMe3)] (M = Zr (4), Hf (5)). The reaction of 2 and 3 with NHMe2BH3 (≥1 equiv) at room temperature affords the dialkyl(dimethylamidoborane) complexes [M(η5-C5Me5)(CH2SiMe3)2(NMe2BH3)] (M = Zr (6), Hf (7)). Compounds 6 and 7 are unstable in solution and decompose with formation of the alkyl(dimethylamino)borane [B(CH2SiMe3)H(NMe2)] (8), SiMe4, and other minor byproducts, including the tetranuclear zirconium(III) octahydride complex [{Zr(η5-C5Me5)}4(μ-H)8] (9) in the decomposition of 6. Addition of NHMe2BH3 to the titanium tris(trimethylsilylmethyl) derivative 1 gives the trinuclear mixed valence Ti(II)/Ti(III) tetrahydride complex [{Ti(η5-C5Me5)(μ-H)}3(μ3-H)(μ3-NMe2BH2)] (10) at 45-65 °C. While the complete conversion of 1 under argon atmosphere requires excess NHMe2BH3 (up to 15 equiv), complex 10 is readily prepared with 3 equiv of NHMe2BH3 under a hydrogen atmosphere indicating that the formation of 10 involves hydrogenolysis of 1 in the presence of (NMe2BH2)2. In absence of amine-borane, the reaction of 1 with H2 leads to the tetranuclear titanium(III) octahydride [{Ti(η5-C5Me5)}4(μ-H)8] (11), which upon addition of NHMe2BH3 and subsequent heating at 65 °C affords complex 10. The X-ray crystal structures of 2, 4, 5, 10, and 11 were determined.

Abstract
The potential energy surface (PES) is just a theoretical construct based on the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, but it underlies various phenomena, including molecular vibrations, collisional ionizations, and chemical reactions. This account describes how a new idea for global reaction route mapping (GRRM), which had seemed to be impossible for chemical systems with more than three atoms, was born and has been developed during the course of the study of the PES. GRRM has pioneered new fields of chemistry. Furthermore, techniques for GRRM are still developing, and GRRM is further extending its application to various areas of chemistry and chemical physics.

Abstract
There has been considerable interest in recent times to develop transition metal complex systems that can demonstrate metal-ligand cooperativity. It has recently been shown (Wass et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2011, 133, 18463) that early transition metals can cooperate with ligands carrying phosphines as pendant groups, working as metal analogues to frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) to mediate in a variety of important reactions. What the current work attempts to do is to show how this concept of metal containing FLPs can be expanded to include late transition metal complexes as well: complexes that have been modified from existing systems that serve as efficient catalysts for homogeneous polymerization. A modified palladium complex has been considered in this regard as an example of a potential late transition metal FLP and studied with full quantum mechanical calculations. The calculations indicate that this complex would be effective at catalyzing ammonia borane dehydrogenation. The possibility of competing side reactions such as reductive elimination have also been considered, and it has been found that such processes would also yield stable products which could act as an FLP in catalyzing reactions such as the dehydrogenation of ammonia borane. The current work therefore expands the scope of metal containing FLPs to include late transition metals and demonstrates computationally the potential of such complexes for exhibiting metal-ligand cooperativity.

Abstract
Treatment of Me(2)S·B(C(6)F(5))(n) H(3-n) (n=1 or 2) with ammonia yields the corresponding adducts. H(3)N·B(C(6)F(5))H(2) dimerises in the solid state through N-H···H-B dihydrogen interactions. The adducts can be deprotonated to give lithium amidoboranes Li[NH(2)B(C(6)F(5))(n)H(3-n)]. Reaction of the n=2 reagent with [Cp(2)ZrCl(2)] leads to disubstitution, but [Cp(2)Zr{NH(2)B(C(6)F(5))(2)H}(2)] is in equilibrium with the product of β-hydride elimination [Cp(2)Zr(H){NH(2)B(C(6)F(5))(2)H}], which proves to be the major isolated solid. The analogous reaction with [Cp(2)HfCl(2)] gives a mixture of [Cp(2)Hf{NH(2)B(C(6)F(5))(2)H}(2)] and the N-H activation product [Cp(2)Hf{NHB(C(6)F(5 )(2)H}]. [Cp(2)Zr{NH(2)B(C(6)F(5))(2)H}(2)]·PhMe and [Cp(2)Hf{NH(2)B(C(6)F(5))(2)H}(2)]·4(thf) exhibit β-B-agostic chelate bonding of one of the two amidoborane ligands in the solid state. The agostic hydride is invariably coordinated to the outside of the metallocene wedge. Exceptionally, [Cp(2)Hf{NH(2)B(C(6)F(5))(2)H}(2)]⋅PhMe has a structure in which the two amidoborane ligands adopt an intermediate coordination mode, in which neither is definitively agostic. [Cp(2)Hf{NHB(C(6)F(5))(2)H}] has a formally dianionic imidoborane ligand chelating through an agostic interaction, but the bond-length distribution suggests a contribution from a zwitterionic amidoborane resonance structure. Treatment of the zwitterions [Cp(2)MMe(μ-Me)B(C(6)F(5))(3)] (M=Zr, Hf) with Li[NH(2)B(C(6)F(5))(n)H(3-n)] (n=2) results in [Cp(2) MMe{NH(2)B(C(6)F(5))(2)H}] complexes, for which the spectroscopic data, particularly (1)J(B,H), again suggest β-B-agostic interactions. The reactions proceed similarly for the structurally encumbered [Cp''(2)ZrMe(μ-Me)B(C(6)F(5))(3)] precursor (Cp''=1,3-C(5)H(3)(SiMe(3))(2) , n=1 or 2) to give [Cp''(2)ZrMe{NH(2)B(C(6)F(5))(n)H(3-n)}], both of which have been structurally characterised and show chelating, agostic amidoborane coordination. In contrast, the analogous hafnium chemistry leads to the recovery of [Cp''(2)HfMe(2)] and the formation of Li[HB(C(6)F(5))(3)] through hydride abstraction.
