Abstract
We have produced a novel indium-based metallocycle complex (In-MeSH), which we initially observed as an unanticipated side-product in metal-organic framework (MOF) syntheses. The serendipitously synthesized metallocycle forms via the acid-catalysed decomposition of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) during solvothermal reactions in the presence of indium nitrate, dimethylformamide and nitric acid. A search through the Cambridge Structural Database revealed isostructural zinc, ruthenium and palladium metallocycle complexes formed by other routes. The ruthenium analogue is catalytically active and the In-MeSH structure similarly displays accessible open metal sites around the outside of the ring. Furthermore, this study also gives access to the relatively uncommon oxidation state of In(II), the targeted synthesis of which can be challenging. In(II) complexes have been reported as having potentially important applications in areas such as catalytic water splitting.

Abstract
Two novel triphenyltin(IV) compounds, [Ph3SnL1] (L1 = 2-(5-(4-fluorobenzylidene)-2,4-dioxotetrahydrothiazole-3-yl)propanoate (1)) and [Ph3SnL2] (L2 = 2-(5-(5-methyl-2-furfurylidene)-2,4-dioxotetrahydrothiazole-3-yl)propanoate (2)) were synthesized and characterized by FT-IR, (1H and 13C) NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and elemental microanalysis. The in vitro anticancer activity of the synthesized organotin(IV) compounds was determined against four tumor cell lines: PC-3 (prostate), HT-29 (colon), MCF-7 (breast), and HepG2 (hepatic) using MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-12 diphenyltetrazolium bromide) and CV (crystal violet) assays. The IC50 values are found to be in the range from 0.11 to 0.50 μM. Compound 1 exhibits the highest activity toward PC-3 cells (IC50 = 0.115 ± 0.009 μM; CV assay). The tin and platinum uptake in PC-3 cells showed a threefold lower uptake of tin in comparison to platinum (as cisplatin). Together with its higher activity this indicates a much higher cell inhibition potential of the tin compounds (calculated to ca. 50 to 100 times). Morphological analysis suggested that the compounds induce apoptosis in PC-3 cells, and flow cytometry analysis revealed that 1 and 2 induce autophagy as well as NO (nitric oxide) production.

Abstract
Four Ru-Pd heterobimetallic complexes, each one in two different coordination modes (NNSS and NS) having metals connected by a binucleating dialkyldithiooxamidate [N(R)SC-CS(R)N] [R = methyl, ethyl, n-butyl and isopropyl], were prepared by reacting the monochelate [(trinpropyl-phosphine)ClPd(HR2C2N2S2κ-S,S-Pd)] with [(η6-p-cymene)RuCl2]2. Furthermore, two palladium homobimetallic complexes having two (trinpropyl-phosphine)ClPd moieties joined by a diethyldithiooxamidate in both κ-N,S Pd, κ-N',S' Pd' and κ-N,N' Pd, κ-S,S' Pd' coordination modes were synthesized. For both kinds of complexes, homo- and heterobimetallic, at room temperature and in chloroform solution, the NNSS coordination mode (kinetic compounds) turns out to be unstable and therefore the resulting complexes rearrange into a thermodynamically more stable form (NS coordination mode). The crystal structures of [(trinpropyl-phosphine)ClPd]2[μ-(ethyl)2-DTO κ-N,S Pd, κ-N',S' Pd'] (2) and [(η6-p-cymene)ClRu][μ-(methyl)2-DTO κ-N,S Ru, κ-N,S Pd] [(trinpropyl-phosphine)ClPd] (1c) were determined by solid state X-ray crystallography. Moreover, the higher stability of the thermodynamic species in the heterobimetallic complexes (Ru-Pd) was evaluated by means of computational studies in accordance with the maximum hardness principle. All stable NS complexes (i.e.1c-4c, 2 and the previously reported homobimetallic Ru complex 3) were tested against two leukemia cell lines, namely the drug-sensitive CCRF-CEM cell line and its multidrug-resistant sub-cell line CEM/ADR5000 showing anti-proliferative activity in the low micromolar range (∼1-5 μM) and micromolar range (∼10-25 μM), respectively. In addition, these complexes efficaciously block at least two out of the three proteolytic activities of the tumor target 20S proteasome, with heterobimetallic complex 3c and homobimetallic complex 3 possessing the best inhibitory profile.

Abstract
A novel 1D zinc(II) coordination polymer [Zn(bbbm)Cl2]n (where bbbm=1,4-bis(N-benzimidazolyl)butane) was synthetized by ZnCl2 and bbbm ligand under hydrothermal conditions, and its structural and spectral properties were studied by both experimental and theoretical techniques. The center zinc(II) ion displays four-coordinated in a tetrahedral geometry by two chloride anions and two N atoms of distinct bbbm ligands. Adjacent chains are further connected into a 2D layer structure through π-π stacking interactions. Vibrational frequencies of [Zn(bbbm)Cl2]n have been calculated using DFT/B3LYP/TZVP method, and well reproduced IR data. Furthermore, the vertical excitation energies from time-dependent DFT calculation confirmed that the fluorescent peaks at 385nm and 450nm could respectively be assigned to the π→π(*) transition within the bbbm ligands and π→n transition from chloride anion to bbbm ligand.

Abstract
A series of new N-alkyl functionalised 6- and 7-membered expanded ring N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) pro-ligands 3-6 and their corresponding complexes of rhodium(I) and iridium(I), [M(NHC)(COD)Cl] 7-14 and [M(NHC)(CO)2Cl] 15-22 are described. The complexes have been characterised by (1)H and (13)C{(1)H} NMR, mass spectrometry, IR and X-ray diffraction. It is noted from X-ray diffraction studies that the N-alkyl substituents are found to orientate themselves away from the metal centre due to unfavourable steric interactions resulting in low percent buried volume (%V(bur)) values in the solid state. The heterocycle ring size is also found to dictate the spatial orientation of the N-alkyl substituents in the neopentyl functionalised derivatives 10 and 14. The 7-membered derivative 14 allows for a conformational 'twist' of the heterocycle ring with the N-alkyl substituents adopting a mutually trans configuration with respect to each other, while the more rigid 6-membered system 10 does not allow for this conformational 'twist' and consequently the N-alkyl substituents adopt a mutually cis configuration. The σ-donor function of this new class of expanded ring NHC ligand has also been probed by measured IR stretching frequencies of the [M(NHC)(CO)2Cl] complexes 15-22. A preliminary catalytic survey of the hydrogenation of functionalised alkenes with molecular hydrogen under mild conditions has also been undertaken with complex , affording an insight into the application of large ring NHC ancillary ligands bearing N-alkyl substituents in hydrogenation transformations.

Abstract
A group of organotin(IV) complexes were prepared: [SnCy3 (DMNI)] (1), [SnCy3 (BZDO)] (2), [SnCy3 (DMFU)] (3), and [SnPh2 (BZDO)2 ] (4), for which DMNIH=2,6-dimethoxynicotinic acid, BZDOH=1,4-benzodioxane-6-carboxylic acid, and DMFUH=2,5-dimethyl-3-furoic acid. The cytotoxic activities of compounds 1-4 were tested against pancreatic carcinoma (PANC-1), erythroleukemia (K562), and two glioblastoma multiform (U87 and LN-229) human cell lines; they show very high antiproliferative activity, with IC50 values in the 150-700 nM range after incubation for 72 h. Distribution of cellular DNA upon treatment with 1-4 revealed that whereas compounds 1-3 induce apoptosis in most of the cell lines, compound 4 does not affect cell viability in any cell line tested, indicating a possible difference in cytotoxic mechanism. Studies with the daunomycin-resistant K562/R cell line expressing P-glycoprotein (Pgp) showed that compounds 1-4 are not substrates of this protein efflux pump, indicating that these compounds do not induce acquisition of multidrug resistance, which is associated with the overexpression of Pgp.

Abstract
The reaction of N-phthaloylglycine (P-GlyH), N-phthaloyl-l-alanine (P-AlaH), and 1,2,4-benzenetricarboxylic 1,2-anhydride (BTCH) with triethylamine led to the formation of the corresponding ammonium salts [NHEt(3)][P-Gly] (1), [NHEt(3)][P-Ala] (2) and [NHEt(3)][BTC] (3) in very high yields. The subsequent reaction of 1-3 with triphenyltin(iv) chloride (1 : 1) yielded the compounds [NHEt(3)][SnPh(3)Cl(P-Gly)] (4), [NHEt(3)][SnPh(3)Cl(P-Ala)] (5), and [NHEt(3)][SnPh(3)Cl(BTC)] (6), respectively. The molecular structure of 4 was determined by X-ray diffraction studies. The cytotoxic activity of the ammonium salts (1-3) and the triphenyltin(iv) chloride derivatives (4-6) were tested against human tumor cell lines from five different histogenic origins: 8505C (anaplastic thyroid cancer), A253 (head and neck cancer), A549 (lung carcinoma), A2780 (ovarian cancer) and DLD-1 (colon cancer). Triphenyltin(iv) chloride derivatives (4-6) show very high activity against these cell lines while the ammonium salts of the corresponding carboxylic acids (1-3) are totally inactive. The most active compound is 4 which is 50 times more active than cisplatin. Compound 4 is found to induce apoptosis via extrinsic pathways on DLD-1 cell lines, probably by accumulation of caspases 2, 3 and 8. Furthermore, compound 4 seems to cause disturbances in G1 and G2/M phases in cell cycle of DLD-1 cell line.

Abstract
Platinum(IV) compounds like oxoplatin (cis, cis, trans-diammine-dichlorido-dihydroxido-platinum(IV)) show increased stability and therefore can be applied orally. In a panel of 38 human cancer cell lines this drug induced S-phase arrest and cell death with IC50 values 2.5-fold higher than cisplatin. Oxoplatin may be converted to cisplatin by intracellular reducing agents, however, exposure to 0.1 M HCl mimicking gastric acid yielded cis-diammine-tetrachlorido-platinum(IV) exhibiting twofold increased activity. Similar results were obtained for another platinum(IV) compound, JM 149 (ammine-dichlorido-(cyclohexylamine)-dihydroxido-platinum(IV)), but not for its parent drug JM 216/satraplatin. Genome-wide expression profiling of H526 small cell lung cancer cells treated with these platinum species revealed clear differences in the expression pattern of affected genes between oxoplatin and cisplatin. In conclusion, oxoplatin constitutes a potent oral agent that is either reduced or converted to distinct active compounds, for example, by gastric acid or acidic areas prevailing in solid tumors, in dependence of the respective pharmaceutical formulation.

Abstract
Dehydroxylated MCM-41 and SBA-15 surfaces were modified by the grafting of two different titanocene complexes ([Ti(eta(5)-C(5)H(4)Me)(2)Cl(2)] and [Ti{Me(2)Si(eta(5)-C(5)Me(4))(eta(5)-C(5)H(4))}Cl(2)]) to give new materials, which have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, nitrogen gas sorption, MAS-NMR spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, SEM, and TEM. The toxicity of the resulting materials toward human adenocarcinoma HeLa, human myelogenous leukemia K562, human malignant melanoma Fem-x, and normal immunocompetent cells, such as peripheral blood mononuclear cells PBMC has been studied. Estimation of the number of particles per gram of material led to the calculation of Q(50) values for these samples, which is the number of particles required to inhibit normal cell growth by 50%. In addition, M(50) values (quantity of material needed to inhibit normal cell growth by 50%) of the studied surfaces is also reported. Nonfunctionalized MCM-41 and SBA-15 did not show notable antiproliferative activity, whereas functionalization of these materials with different titanocene based anticancer drugs led to very promising antitumoral activity. The best Q(50) values correspond to titanocene functionalized MCM-41 surfaces (MCM-41/[Ti(eta(5)-C(5)H(4)Me)(2)Cl(2)] (1) and MCM-41/[Ti{Me(2)Si(eta(5)-C(5)Me(4))(eta(5)-C(5)H(4))}Cl(2)] (2)) with Q(50) values between 3.8+/-0.6x10(8) and 24.5+/-3.0x10(8) particles. Titanocene functionalized SBA-15 surfaces (SBA-15/[Ti(eta(5)-C(5)H(4)Me)(2)Cl(2)] (3) and SBA-15/[Ti{Me(2)Si(eta(5)-C(5)Me(4))(eta(5)-C(5)H(4))}Cl(2)] (4)) gave higher Q(50) values, showing lower activity from 73.2+/-9.9x10(8) to 362+/-7x10(8) particles. The best response of the studied materials in terms of M(50) values was observed against Fem-x (309+/-42 microg for 4) and K562 (338+/-18 microg for 2), whereas moderate activities were observed in HeLa cells (from 508+/-63 microg of 2 to 912+/-10 microg of 1). In addition, the analyzed surfaces presented only marginal activity against unstimulated and stimulated PBMC, showing a slight selectivity on human cancer cells. Comparison of the in vitro cytotoxicity in solution of the titanocene complexes [Ti(eta(5)-C(5)H(4)Me)(2)Cl(2)] and [Ti{Me(2)Si(eta(5)-C(5)Me(4))(eta(5)-C(5)H(4))}Cl(2)] and the corresponding titanocene functionalized materials is also described.

Abstract
In the title complex, [PtBr2(CH3)2(C5H5N)2], the PtIV metal centre lies on a twofold rotation axis and adopts a slightly distorted octahedral coordination geometry. The structure displays weak intramolecular C—H⋯Br hydrogen-bonding interactions.
