Synthesis of Wiberg’s Tetrasilatetrahedrane (tBu3Si)4Si4 by a One-Pot Procedure

Heavy Tetrel Clusters Based on the Bicyclobutane Framework: Bicyclo[1.1.0]butanes, [1.1.1]Propellanes, and Tricyclo[2.1.0.02,5 ]pentanes

In this review, the current state of affairs in the novel field of the group 14 element clusters based on the bicyclo[1.1.0]butane framework, namely, bicyclo[1.1.0]butane, [1.1.1]propellane, and tricyclo[2.1.0.02,5 ]pentane derivatives, are overviewed. Structural similarities and differences between these three classes of highly strained polycyclic compounds are considered from the viewpoint of the critically important nature of their bridgehead bonds. Synthetic strategies towards bicyclo[1.1.0]butanes, [1.1.1]propellanes, and tricyclo[2.1.0.02,5 ]pentanes, as well as their peculiar structural and bonding features, and specific reactivity, are also presented and discussed in this review.

Molecular Silicon Clusters

The continuously decreasing size of device features in microelectronics draws growing attention to the structuring of silicon at the molecular level with powerful tools provided by synthetic chemistry. Silicon clusters are of particular importance in this regard not only as potential precursors for silicon deposition but also as well-defined model systems for bulk and surfaces of silicon at the nanoscale as well as possible starting points for future construction of molecularly precise device structures. This review aims to give a comprehensive overview about the state of the art in the synthesis of molecular silicon clusters, which are grouped into (1) electron-precise saturated clusters, (2) soluble polyhedral Zintl anions, and (3) unsaturated silicon clusters, the so-called siliconoids. Particular attention is paid to functionalization as it is generally considered a necessary prerequisite for the design and construction of more extended systems. The interrelations between the three different classes of molecular silicon clusters, e.g., arising from the introduction of negatively charged functional groups, are highlighted on grounds of NMR properties and computed electronic structures.

[Cl@Si20H20]-: Parent Siladodecahedrane with Endohedral Chloride Ion

Fullerenes and diamondoids are at the core of nanoscience. Comparable monodisperse silicon analogues are scarce. Herein, we report the synthesis of the parent siladodecahedrane, which represents the largest Platonic solid. It shares its pattern of pentagonal faces with the smallest fullerene, C₂₀, and its saturated, H-terminated skeleton with diamondoids. Similar to endofullerenes, the silicon cage encapsulates a chloride ion ([Cl@Si₂₀H₂₀]^-); similar to diamondoids, its Si-H termini offer a wealth of opportunities for further functionalization. Mere treatment with chloromethanes leads to the perchlorinated cluster [Cl@Si₂₀Cl₂₀]^-. Both compounds were characterized by mass spectrometry, X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, and quantum-chemical calculations. The experimentally determined ³⁵Cl resonances of the endohedral chloride ions are particularly diagnostic to probe the Cl^- → Si₂₀ interaction strength as a function of the different surface substituents, as we have proven by high-level computational analyses.

First experimental evidence for the elusive tetrahedral cations [EP3]+ (E = S, Se, Te) in the condensed phase

Condensed phase access to the unprecedented tetrahedral cations [EP3]+ (E = S, Se, Te) was achieved through the reaction of ECl3[WCA] with white phosphorus ([WCA]- = [Al(ORF)4]- and [F(Al(ORF)3)2]-; -RF = -C(CF3)3). Previously, [EP3]+ was only known from gas phase MS investigations. By contrast, the reaction of ECl3[A] with the known P3 3- synthon Na[Nb(ODipp)3(P3)] (enabling AsP3 synthesis), led to formation of P4. The cations [EP3]+ were characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy in combination with high-level quantum chemical calculations. Their bonding situation is described with several approaches including Atoms in Molecules and Natural Bond Orbital analysis. The first series of well-soluble salts ECl3[WCA] was synthesized and fully characterized as starting materials for the studies on this elusive class of [EP3]+ cations. Yet, with high [ECl3]+ fluoride ion affinity values between 775 (S), 803 (Se) and 844 (Te) kJ mol-1, well exceeding typical phosphenium ions, these well-soluble ECl3[WCA] salts could be relevant in view of the renewed interest in strong (also cationic) Lewis acids.

Silicon chemistry in zero to three dimensions: from dichlorosilylene to silafullerane

As one of the simplest examples of functionalized Si(ii) species, the SiCl₂/[SiCl₃]⁻ system is not only fundamentally interesting, but also an important starting point for the assembly of oligosilane chains, rings, and clusters.

Branched Hydrosilane Oligomers as Ideal Precursors for Liquid-Based Silicon-Film Deposition

Herein a convenient synthetic method to obtain 2,2,3,3-tetrasilyltetrasilane 3 and 2,2,3,3,4,4-hexasilylpentasilane 4 on a multigram scale is presented. Proton-coupled ²⁹ Si NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray crystallography enabled unequivocal structural assignment. Owing to their unique properties, which are reflected in their nonpyrophoric character on contact with air and their enhanced light absorption above 250 nm, 3 and 4 are valuable precursors for liquid-phase deposition (LPD) and the processing of thin silicon films. Amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) films of excellent quality were deposited starting from 3 and characterized by conductivity measurements, ellipsometry, optical microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy.

Crystal structures of three sterically congested disilanes

In the three sterically congested silanes, C24H38Si2 (1) (1,1,2,2-tetra-isopropyl-1,2-di-phenyl-disilane), C24H34Br4Si2 (2) [1,1,2,2-tetra-kis-(2-bromo-propan-2-yl)-1,2-di-phenyl-disilane] and C32H38Si2 (3) (1,2-di-tert-butyl-1,1,2,2-tetra-phenyl-disilane), the Si-Si bond length is shortest in (1) and longest in (2), with (3) having an inter-mediate value, which parallels the increasing steric congestion. A comparison of the two isopropyl derivatives, (1 and 2), shows a significant increase in the Si-C(ipso) distance with the introduction of bromine. Also, in the brominated compound 2, attractive inter-molecular Br⋯Br inter-actions exist with Br⋯Br separations ca 0.52 Å shorter than the sum of the van der Waals radii. In compound 2, one of the bromo-isopropyl groups is rotationally disordered in an 0.8812 (9):0.1188 (9) ratio. Compound 3 exhibits 'whole mol-ecule' disorder in a 0.9645 (7):0.0355 (7) ratio with the Si-Si bonds in the two components making an angle of ca 66°.

Analysis of geometric parameters and packing considerations for triphenylboroxine derivatives, with tris(pentafluorophenyl)boroxine as an example

Molecules of the title compound [systematic name: 2,4,6-(pentafluorophenyl)-1,3,5,2,4,6-trioxatriborinane], C(18)B(3)F(15)O(3), are located on crystallographic twofold rotation axes which run through the boroxine and one of the pentafluorophenyl rings. The boroxine ring (r.m.s. deviation = 0.027 Å) and the pentafluorophenyl rings (r.m.s. deviations = 0.004 and 0.001 Å) are essentially planar. The dihedral angles between the boroxine and the two symmetry-independent benzene rings are 8.64 (10) and 8.74 (12)°. The two benzene rings are mutually coparallel [dihedral angle = 0.80 (11)°]. The packing shows planes of molecules parallel to ( ̅201), with an interplanar spacing of 2.99 Å. Within these planes, all the molecules are oriented in the same direction, whereas in neighbouring planes the direction is inverted. Short B···F contacts of 3.040 (2) and 3.1624 (12) Å occur between planes. The geometric parameters of the boroxine ring in the title compound agree well with those of comparable boroxine structures, while the packing reveals some striking similarities and differences.

trans-Dichloridobis(triphenylphosphane-κP)palladium(II) benzene hemisolvate

The title complex, [PdCl₂(C₁₈H₁₅P)₂]·0.5C₆H₆, has the Pd^II ion in a square-planar coordination mode (r.m.s. deviation for Pd, P and Cl atoms = 0.024 Å) with the PPh₃ and Cl ligands mutually trans. The benzene solvent mol­ecule is located about a crystallographic inversion centre. The title complex is isostructural with trans-dichloridobis(triphenyl­phosphane)­palladium(II) 1,4-dichloro­benzene sesquisolvate [Kitano et al. (1983 ▶). Acta Cryst. C39, 1015–1017].
