Abstract
BACKGROUND In a previous study, diethylstilbestrol (DES) was shown to induce oocyte maturation in fish. In the present study, the interaction of DES on goldfish membrane progesterone receptor α (GmPRα) was investigated using a competitive binding assay with radiolabeled steroids. The results indicate that DES exerts its effects on membrane progesterone receptor alpha (mPRα) and induces oocyte maturation through nongenomic steroid mechanisms. This study provides empirical data that demonstrate the binding between DES and GmPRα. METHODS Binding of DES to GmPRα was achieved by using radiolabeled DES and recombinant GmPRα expressed in culture cells or purified GmPRα proteins that coupled to graphene quantum dots (GQDs). Additionally, the competitive binding of fluorescently labeled progesterone to GmPRα-expressing cells was evaluated. RESULTS Although significant nonspecific binding of radiolabeled DES to the cell membrane that expresses GmPRα has been observed, specific binding of DES to GmPRα has been successfully identified in the presence of digitonin. Furthermore, the specific binding of DES to GmPRα was confirmed by a binding assay using GQD-GmPRα. The radiolabeled DES was shown to bind to GQD-GmPRα. Additionally, the competition for the binding of fluorescently labeled progesterone to GmPRα-expressing cells was achieved with the DES. CONCLUSIONS The results of the experiments revealed that DES binds to GmPRα. Thus, it can be concluded that DES induces goldfish oocyte maturation by binding to GmPRα.

Abstract
A new continuous fish cell line (CAM) has been successfully derived from the muscle tissues of grass goldfish, Carassius auratus. The primary cell cultures were initiated by incomplete trypsinization first and then explant culture in a Leibovitz-15 medium supplemented with 15% fetal bovine serum and 10% fish muscle extract. It was found that the CAM cells were very sensitive to trypsinization and needed to be sub-cultured at a low trypsin concentration of 0.0625% to be able to go through the crisis of spontaneous immortalization transformation, and afterward a total of five derivative cell strains were isolated from the original CAM cell line. This spontaneous immortalization transformation event was recorded successively at passages 44-47, beginning with a large-scale apoptosis and senescence and followed by mitosis arrest and re-activation, thus designated as cell strain CAM-44A, 44B, 45A, 44B, and 47A. Now both the CAM cell line and strains had been sub-cultured for more than 89 times and could be well cryopreserved in the growth medium containing 5% dimethylsulfoxide. Chromosome analysis and COI gene analysis had confirmed the grass goldfish origin of these CAM cells. Transfection potential analysis indicated that Lipofectamine LTX and Xfect were two suitable transfection reagents to be used in the gene delivery of CAM cells with a transfection efficiencies up to 11±6% and 8±3% in the CAM cell lines, respectively. Among the five cell strains, CAM-47A showed the highest transfection potential with a transfection efficiency up to 28 ± 5%. This work will provide a useful cell source for works on the cell-based artificial fish meat production and functional studies of fish myogenesis-related genes.

Abstract
Cyprinid herpesvirus 2 (CyHV-2) is the etiological agent of Goldfish herpesviral haematopoietic necrosis (GHVHN) in goldfish. In this study, three new cell lines including Fantail goldfish gill (FtGG), Fantail goldfish liver (FtGL) and Fantail goldfish brain (FtGB) had been established and characterized from the gill, liver and brain tissue of C. auratus respectively. Cell lines were optimally grown at 28 °C in Leibovitz-15 (L-15) medium supplemented with 10 % fetal bovine serum (FBS). The PDT during exponential growth of FtGG, FtGL and FtGB cells were determined to be 41.47 h, 63.43 h and 79.79 h respectively. Karyotyping analysis of cell lines remained diploid (2n = 100). The revival rate was 82 %, 72 % and 70 % in FtGG, FtGL and FtGB cells respectively after 6 months of cryopreservation. All the three cells showed similar cytopathic effect (CPE) between 3-5 days post-infection (dpi) with CyHV-2 and complete destruction of the monolayer was observed at 8-10 dpi. The viral titers of CyHV-2 in FtGG, FtGL and FtGB reached 107.375±0.35 TCID50 ml-1, 104·55±0.070 TCID50 ml-1 and 106.45±0.070 TCID50 ml-1 respectively. These newly established cell lines will be a useful diagnostic tool for viral diseases in this fish species and also for the isolation and study of goldfish viruses in future.

Abstract
Background Herpesviral hematopoietic necrosis disease, caused by cyprinid herpesvirus-2 (CyHV-2), is responsible for massive mortalities in the aquaculture of goldfish, Carassius auratus. Permissive cell lines for the isolation and propagation of CyHV-2 have been established from various goldfish tissues by sacrificing the fish. Here, we report the development of a cell line, FtGF (Fantail Goldfish Fin), from caudal fin of goldfish using non-lethal sampling. We also describe a simple protocol for successful establishment and characterization of a permissive cell line through explant method and continuous propagation of CyHV-2 with high viral titer using this cell line. Methods Caudal fin tissue samples were collected from goldfish without killing the fish. Cell culture of goldfish caudal fin cells was carried out using Leibovitz’s L-15 (L-15) medium containing 20% FBS and 1X concentration of antibiotic antimycotic solution, incubated at 28 °C. Cells were characterized and origin of the cells was confirmed by sequencing fragments of the 16S rRNA and COI genes. CyHV-2 was grown in the FtGF cells and passaged continuously 20 times. The infectivity of the CyHV-2 isolated using FtGF cells was confirmed by experimental infection of naïve goldfish. Results The cell line has been passaged up to 56 times in L-15 with 10% FBS. Karyotyping of FtGF cells at 30th, 40th and 56th passage indicated that modal chromosome number was 2n = 104. Species authentication of FtGF was performed by sequencing of the 16S rRNA and COI genes. The cell line was used for continuous propagation of CyHV-2 over 20 passages with high viral titer of 107.8±0.26 TCID50/mL. Following inoculation of CyHV-2 positive tissue homogenate, FtGF cells showed cytopathic effect by 2nd day post-inoculation (dpi) and complete destruction of cells was observed by the 10th dpi. An experimental infection of naïve goldfish using supernatant from infected FtGF cells caused 100% mortality and CyHV-2 infection in the challenged fish was confirmed by the amplification of DNA polymerase gene, histopathology and transmission electron microscopy. These findings provide confirmation that the FtGF cell line is highly permissive to the propagation of CyHV-2.

Abstract
A walleye dermal fibroblastoid cell line, WE-skin11f, was established and characterized. WE-skin11f was immunocytochemically positive for two known dermal fibroblast protein markers: vimentin and collagen I. At passage 26, WE-skin11f cultures contained both diploid and aneuploid populations. Ascorbic acid was required to produce extracellular collagen I fibres. Both of the skin fibroblastoid cell lines, WE-skin11f and rainbow trout-derived RTHDF, were not as good as the walleye caudal fin fibroblastoid cell line, WE-cfin11f, at forming abundant dense extracellular collagen matrices. The thermobiology of WE-skin11f was similar to that of other walleye cell lines with 26°C showing best temperature for growth and 4°C showing no growth but 100% viability. The transcript levels of b2m and mhIa genes of the major histocompatibility class I receptor in WE-skin11f were largely similar at all temperatures examined (4, 14, 20 and 26°C). Cortisol had a variety of effects on WE-skin11f cells: growth inhibition, morphological change from fibroblastoid to epithelioid, and enhancement of barrier function. Treatment of WE-skin11f cells with the physiologically relevant concentration of 100 ng/ml cortisol inhibited collagen I synthesis and matrix formation. Thus, WE-skin11f cell line could be useful in fish dermatology, endocrinology, and immunology research.

Abstract
In vitro cell culture methods are crucial for the isolation, purification and mass propagation of intracellular pathogens of aquatic organisms. Cell culture infection models can yield insights into infection mechanisms, aid in developing methods for disease mitigation and prevention, and inform commercial-scale cultivation approaches. This study details the establishment of a larval cell line (GML-5) from the Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) and its use in the study of microsporidia. GML-5 has survived over 100 passages in 8 years of culture. The line remains active and viable between 8 and 21°C in Leibovitz-15 (L-15) media with 10% foetal bovine serum and exhibits a myofibroblast phenotype as indicated by immuno-positive results for vimentin, α-smooth muscle actin, collagen I and S-100 proteins, while being desmin-negative. GML-5 supports the infection and development of two microsporidian parasites, an opportunistic generalist (Anncaliia algerae) and cod-specific Loma morhua. Using GML-5, spore germination and proliferation of L. morhua was found to require exposure to basic pH and cool incubation temperatures (8°C), in contrast to A. algerae, which required no cultural modifications. Loma morhua-associated xenoma-like structures were observed 2 weeks postexposure. This in vitro infection model may serve as a valuable tool for cod parasitology and aquaculture research.

Abstract
Cold acclimation of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, causes collagen to increase within the extracellular matrix (ECM) of the myocardium, while warm acclimation has the opposite effect. The mechanism responsible for this remodelling response is not known. In mammals, transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGF-β1) stimulates collagen deposition within the myocardial ECM. Therefore, we hypothesized that TGF-β1 regulates trout myocardial ECM turnover and predicted that TGF-β1 would induce collagen deposition in cultured rainbow trout cardiac fibroblasts. We found that treatment of trout cardiac fibroblasts with 15 ng ml-1 human recombinant TGF-β1 caused an increase in total collagen at 48 and 72 h and an increase in collagen type I protein after 7 days. We also found that TGF-β1 treatment caused an increase in the transcript abundance of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 2 (timp-2) and matrix metalloproteinase 9 (mmp-9) at 24 h. Cells treated with TGF-β1 also had lower levels of the gene transcript for mmp-2 after 48 h and higher levels of the gene transcript for collagen type I α1 (col1a1) after 72 h. These changes in gene expression suggest that the increase in collagen deposition is due to a decrease in the activity of matrix metalloproteinases and an increase in collagen synthesis. Together, these results indicate that TGF-β1 is a regulator of ECM composition in cultured trout cardiac fibroblasts and suggest that this cytokine may play a role in regulating collagen content in the trout heart during thermal acclimation.

Abstract
Goldfish Carassius auratus are commonly used in scientific research and have a significant economic value in the pet trade. In this study, two cell lines were established from the snout and kidney tissue of goldfish, in order to create a biological monitoring tool for viral diseases. Cell lines were optimally maintained at 25 °C in M199 medium supplemented with 15-20 % fetal bovine serum. Chromosomal analysis indicated that both cell lines remained diploid, with a mean chromosomal count of 100. Results of viral inoculation assays revealed that both cell lines shared similar patterns of viral susceptibility and production to infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV). The viral titers of IPNV in goldfish snout cell line (GFSe) and goldfish kidney cell line (GFKf) reached 10(6.8) and 10(5.9) TCID50/0.1 mL, respectively, within 7 days. The cytopathic effect could be observed when Cyprinid herpesvirus 2 was inoculated into these cells; however, the CPE disappeared after four passages. No CPE was observed in the cells infected by spring viremia carp virus or grass carp reovirus. These newly established cell lines will be a useful diagnostic tool for viral diseases in this fish species and also for the isolation and study of goldfish viruses in future.

Abstract
A cell line, WE-cfin11e, with an epithelial-like morphology was developed from a caudal fin of walleye, Sander vitreus (Mitchill), characterized as distinct from the established walleye caudal fin fibroblast-like cell line, WE-cfin11f, and compared with WE-cfin11f for susceptibility to VHSV IVb. Immunocytochemistry and confocal microscopy were used to localize the intermediate filament protein, vimentin, the tight junction protein, zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1), the extracellular matrix protein, collagen I, and the viral protein, G. Although both cell lines contained vimentin, only WE-cfin11e stained for ZO-1 and only WE-cfin11f stained for collagen I. Ascorbic acid increased the accumulation of collagen I and caused the appearance of collagen fibres only in WE-cfin11f cultures. At 14 °C, both cell lines produced VHSV IVb, but the infection developed more rapidly in WE-cfin11f. At 4 °C, both cell lines became infected with VHSV IVb as judged by the expression of viral proteins, N and G, but only WE-cfin11f produced virus. The results suggest that cold temperatures can modulate viral tropism.

Abstract
The hypothalamic neuropeptide Nesfatin-1 is present in both mammals and teleosts in which it elicits anorexigenic effects. In mammals, Nesfatin-1 acts on the heart by inducing negative inotropism and lusitropism, and cardioprotection against ischemic damages. We evaluated whether in teleosts, Nesfatin-1 also influences cardiac performance. In the goldfish (Carassius auratus), mature, fully processed Nesfatin-1 was detected in brain, gills, intestine and skeletal muscle, but not in the cardiac ventricle. However, on the isolated and perfused working goldfish heart, exogenous Nesfatin-1 induced a positive inotropic effect, revealed by a dose-dependent increase of stroke volume (SV) and stroke work (SW). Positive inotropism was abolished by inhibition of adenylate cyclase (AC; MDL123330A) and cAMP-dependent kinase (PKA; KT5720), suggesting a cAMP/PKA-mediated pathway. This was confirmed by the increased cAMP concentrations revealed by ELISA on Nesfatin-1-treated hearts. Perfusion with Diltiazem, Thapsigargin and PD98059 showed the involvement of L-type calcium channels, SERCA2a pumps and ERK1/2, respectively. The role of ERK1/2 and phospholamban in Nesfatin-1-induced cardiostimulation was supported by Western blotting analysis. In conclusion, this is the first report showing that in teleosts, Nesfatin-1 potentiates mechanical cardiac performance, strongly supporting the evolutionary importance of the peptide in the control of the cardiac function of vertebrates.

Abstract
Using morphological and physiological approaches we provided, for the first time, a structural and functional characterization of Carassius auratus L. heart. Besides to the classical four chambers, i.e. sinus venosus, atrium, ventricle, bulbus, we described two distinct structures corresponding to the atrio-ventricular (AV) region and the conus arteriosus. The atrium is very large and highly trabeculated; the ventricle shows an outer compacta, vascularized by coronary vessels, and an inner spongiosa; the bulbus wall is characterized by a high elastin/collagen ratio, which makes it extremely compliant. Immunolocalization revealed a strong expression of activated "eNOS-like" isoforms both at coronary endothelium and, to a lesser extent, in the myocardiocytes and the endocardial endothelium (EE). The structural design of the heart appears to comply with its mechanical function. Using an in vitro working heart preparation, cardiac performance was evaluated at different filling and afterload pressures. The hearts were very sensitive to filling pressure increases. Maximum Stroke volume (SV=1.08 ± 0.09 mL/kg body mass) was obtained with an input pressure of 0.4 kPa. The heart was not able to sustain afterload increases, values higher than 1.5 kPa impairing its performance. These morpho-functional features are consistent with a volume pump mechanical performance.

Abstract
Scuticociliates are extracellular histophagous parasites that affect farmed fish worldwide. One of the most common pathogenic species is Miamiensis avidus, a pathogen of New Zealand groper (Polyprion oxygeneios). The aim of this study was to characterise both the host (groper)-parasite (M. avidus) immune interactions and the possible protective role of dietary sodium ascorbate. Head-kidney leucocytes (HKLs) from naturally infected adult groper showed decreased respiratory burst response and peroxidase (Px) levels than healthy individuals. Infected groper also had significantly higher serum Px levels compared to controls. Myeloperoxidase (MPO) was inhibited in the head-kidney (HK) whereas MPO(+) cells were observed in the skin and muscle lesions. The inhibition of the innate immune responses was further studied in experimental infections with M. avidus, which confirmed depletion of Px inside leucocytes and marked increases in serum Px in infected individuals. Groper juveniles were fed a diet supplemented with sodium ascorbate (Vitamin C) (2g Kg(-1)) for 21 days and then challenged by subcutaneous injection or immersion exposure with live M. avidus cells. No protection was observed in the sodium ascorbate fed groper compared to the control diet following challenge by either injection or immersion. In vitro assays showed that sodium ascorbate itself results in the inhibition of Px and respiratory burst of groper HKLs, supporting the results obtained in vivo. Our results show that histophagous protozoa such as M. avidus hamper innate immune defences of fish hosts and that dietary sodium ascorbate does not protect groper against experimental infection with this parasite.

Abstract
Cell lines provide an important biological tool for carrying out investigations into physiology, virology, toxicology, carcinogenesis and transgenics. Teleost fish cell lines have been developed from a broad range of tissues such as ovary, fin, swim bladder, heart, spleen, liver, eye muscle, vertebrae, brain, skin. One hundred and twenty-four new fish cell lines from different fish species ranging from grouper to eel have been reported since the last review by Fryer and Lannan (J Tissue Culture Methods 16: 87-94, 1994). Among the cell lines listed, more than 60% were established from species from Asia, which contributes more than 80% of total fish production. This includes 59 cell lines from 19 freshwater, 54 from 22 marine and 11 from 3 brackish water fishes. Presently, about 283 cell lines have been established from finfish around the world. In addition to the listing and a scientific update on new cell lines, the importance of authentication, applications, cross-contamination and implications of overpassaged cell lines has also been discussed in this comprehensive review. The authors feel that the review will serve an updated database for beginners and established researchers in the field of fish cell line research and development.

Abstract
Titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) nanoparticles have been shown to be genotoxic to cells exposed to ultraviolet A (UVA) radiation. Using the technique of electron spin resonance (ESR) spin trapping, we have confirmed that the primary damaging species produced on irradiation of TiO(2) nanoparticles is the hydroxyl (OH) radical. We have applied this technique to TiO(2)-treated fish and mammalian cells under in vitro conditions and observed the additional formation of carboxyl radical anions (CO(2)(-)) and superoxide radical anions (O(2)(-)). This novel finding suggests a hitherto unreported pathway for damage, involving primary generation of OH radicals in the cytoplasm, which react to give CO(2)(-) radicals. The latter may then react with cellular oxygen to form O(2)(-) and genotoxic hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)).

Abstract
Goldfish (Carassius auratus) are excellent model organisms for the neuroendocrine signaling and the regulation of reproduction in vertebrates. Goldfish also serve as useful model organisms in numerous other fields. In contrast to mammals, teleost fish do not have a median eminence; the anterior pituitary is innervated by numerous neuronal cell types and thus, pituitary hormone release is directly regulated. Here we briefly describe the neuroendocrine control of luteinizing hormone. Stimulation by gonadotropin-releasing hormone and a multitude of classical neurotransmitters and neuropeptides is opposed by the potent inhibitory actions of dopamine. The stimulatory actions of gamma-aminobutyric acid and serotonin are also discussed. We will focus on the development of a cDNA microarray composed of carp and goldfish sequences which has allowed us to examine neurotransmitter-regulated gene expression in the neuroendocrine brain and to investigate potential genomic interactions between these key neurotransmitter systems. We observed that isotocin (fish homologue of oxytocin) and activins are regulated by multiple neurotransmitters, which is discussed in light of their roles in reproduction in other species. We have also found that many novel and uncharacterized goldfish expressed sequence tags in the brain are also regulated by neurotransmitters. Their sites of production and whether they play a role in neuroendocrine signaling and control of reproduction remain to be determined. The transcriptomic tools developed to study reproduction could also be used to advance our understanding of neuroendocrine-immune interactions and the relationship between growth and food intake in fish.

Abstract
TiO(2) nanoparticles (< 100 nm diameter) have been reported to cause oxidative stress related effects, including inflammation, cytotoxicity and genomic instability, either alone or in the presence of UVA irradiation in mammalian studies. Despite the fact that the aquatic environment is often the ultimate recipient of all contaminants there is a paucity of data pertaining to the potential detrimental effects of nanoparticles on aquatic organisms. Therefore, these investigations aimed to evaluate the potential cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of TiO(2) nanoparticles on goldfish skin cells (GFSk-S1), either alone or in combination with UVA. Whilst neutral red retention (NRR) assay (a measure of lysosomal membrane integrity) was used to evaluate cell viability, a modified Comet assay using bacterial lesion-specific repair endonucleases (Endo-III, Fpg) was employed to specifically target oxidative DNA damage. Additionally, electron spin resonance (ESR) studies with different spin traps were carried out for qualitative analysis of free radical generation. For cell viability, TiO(2) alone (0.1-1000 microg ml(-1)) had little effect whereas co-exposure with UVA (0.5-2.0 kJm(-2)) caused a significant dose-dependent decrease which was dependent on both the concentration of TiO(2) and the dose of UVA administered. For the Comet assay, doses of 1, 10 and 100 microg ml(-1) in the absence of UVA caused elevated levels of Fpg-sensitive sites, indicating the oxidation of purine DNA bases (i.e. guanine) by TiO(2). UVA irradiation of TiO(2)-treated cells caused further increases in DNA damage. ESR studies revealed that the observed toxic effects of nanoparticulate TiO(2) were most likely due to hydroxyl radical (OH) formation.

Abstract
Neoparamoeba pemaquidensis is an ubiquitous amphizoic marine protozoan and has been implicated as the causative agent for several diseases in marine organisms, most notably amoebic gill disease (AGD) in Atlantic salmon. Despite several reports on the pathology of AGD, relatively little is known about the protozoan and its relationship to host cells. In this study, an in vitro approach using monolayers of a rainbow trout gill cell line (RTgill-W1, ATCC CRL-2523) was used to rapidly grow large numbers of N. pemaquidensis (ATCC 50172) and investigate cell-pathogen interactions. Established cell lines derived from other tissues of rainbow trout and other fish species were also evaluated for amoeba growth support. The amoebae showed preference and highest yield when grown with RTgill-W1 over nine other tested fish cell lines. Amoeba yields could reach as high as 5 x 10(5) cells mL(-1) within 3 days of growth on the gill cell monolayers. The amoebae caused visible focal lesions in RTgill-W1 monolayers within 24 h of exposure and rapidly proliferated and spread with cytopathic effects destroying the neighbouring pavement-like cells within 48-72 h after initial exposure in media above 700 mOsm kg(-1). Disruption of the integrity of the gill cell monolayers could be noted within 30 min of exposure to the amoeba suspensions by changes in transepithelial resistance (TER) compared with control cell monolayers maintained in the exposure media. This was significantly different by 2 h (P < 0.05) compared with control cells and remained significantly different (P < 0.01) for the remaining 72 h that the TER was monitored. The RTgill-W1 cell line is thus a convenient model for growing N. pemaquidensis and for studying host-pathogen interactions in AGD.

Abstract
Fish cell lines are relatively easy to culture and most have simple growth requirements that make cross contamination a potential problem. Cell line contamination is not an uncommon incident in laboratories handling more than one cell line and many reports have been made on cross contamination of mammalian cell lines. Although problems of misidentification and cross-contamination of fish cell lines have rarely been reported, these are issues of concern for cell culturists that can make scientific results and their reproducibility unreliable. Proper identification of cell lines is thus crucial and protocols for routine and rapid screening are preferred. Cytogenetic evaluation, DNA fingerprinting, microsatellite analysis and PCR methods have been published for inter-species identification of many cell lines, but discerning intra-species contamination has been challenging. More complex DNA fingerprinting and hybridization techniques coupled with isoenzyme analysis have been developed to discriminate intra-species contamination, however, these require complex and time consuming procedures to enable cell identification thus are difficult to apply for routine use. A simple proteomic approach has been made to identify several fish cell lines derived from tissues of the same or differing species. Protein expression signatures (PES) of the evaluated fish cell lines have been developed using 2-DE and image analysis. A higher degree of concordance was seen among cell lines derived from rainbow trout, than from other fish species. Similar concordance was seen in cells derived from the same tissues than from other tissues within the same species. These profiles have been saved in an electronic databank and could be made available to be used for discerning the origins of the various cell lines evaluated. This proteomic approach could thus serve as an additional, valuable and reliable technique for the identification of fish cell lines.

Abstract
Liver cells of the twenty-one day old rat embryo are isolated by a modified method and autophagy is studied in them by electron microscopic morphology and morphometry. Immediately after isolation or 2.5 h incubation in nutrient-free medium, embryonic hepatocytes contain high amount of glycogen and only very few autophagic vacuoles. In contrast, all glycogen is lost and 15% of the cytoplasmic volume is occupied by late autophagic vacuoles in hepatocytes after 18 h in the same medium. Presence of 3-methyladenine in the latter case inhibits both the loss of glycogen and the appearance of autophagic vacuoles while enlarging the multivesicular body compartment. Our findings reveal major differences between isolated embryonic and adult hepatocytes concerning autophagy. Several types of autophagic vacuoles are described in the cell types of the erythropoietic cell lineage. This means that autophagy is an integral part of erythropoiesis not only in bone marrow, but also in embryonic liver that is investigated here for the first time from this point of view. The presence of unclosed isolation membranes and the predominance of early autophagic vacuoles in reticulocytes indicates that the molecular machinery of segregation is still active in this functionally and structurally highly reduced cell type.

Abstract
This review summarizes the scattered literature on the effects of toxicants on the external and internal innate immunity of fish. Insecticides, heavy metals and surfactants have been the most frequently examined toxicants, whereas dioxins, furans and polychlorinated biphenyls have been tested less frequently. Studies to date have been conducted at the levels of cells in vitro, of fish in the laboratory and microcosms, and also of fish in the field. Among innate immune parameters, phagocyte respiratory burst appears especially sensitive to toxicants. Toxicant-induced alterations in external mucous production have also been observed repeatedly. Field studies have occasionally examined changes to melano-macrophage centers, but the meaning of such changes is not clear. Advances in basic knowledge of fish innate immunity should lead to improvements in monitoring fish health and predicting the impact of toxicants on fish populations, which is a fundamental ecotoxicological goal.
