Metamemory and financial decision making in older adults without dementia

Online awareness is associated with superior performance on assessments of functional cognition

Background

Intact awareness facilitates an individual's adoption of strategies to support community living skills. However, most studies have not examined awareness during ongoing complex task performance. Objective: To examine whether community-dwelling adult's Accuracy and Strategy use on the Weekly Calendar Planning Activity 17-item version (WCPA-17), Total Cues on the Performance Assessment of Self-care Skills Checkbook Balancing and Shopping Task (PCST), and scores on the self-report Alzheimer's Disease Cooperative Study - Activities of Daily Living Scale (ADCS-ADL) differ between groups who do and do not demonstrate awareness of performance difficulties on the WCPA-17.

Methods

Using data collected as part of a larger study we performed a cross-sectional analysis of 274 community-dwelling adults aged 55 to 93 years. Two methods classified participants into groups aware or unaware of their performance. Independent sample t-tests examined group differences on four dependent variables: Accuracy and Strategy use on the WCPA-17, PCST Total Cues, and score on the ADCS-ADL.

Results

Using one classification method, aware individuals showed superior Accuracy (p < 0.001), used more Strategies (p = 0.002), needed fewer PCST Total Cues (p < 0.001), and reported greater independence on the ADCS-ADL (p < 0.004), similar trends were observed with the other method in Accuracy (p < 0.001) and PCST Total Cues (p < 0.001) but Strategy use and ADCS-ADL differences failed to reach significance after Bonferroni correction.

Conclusion

Groups categorized as aware performed better on all measures. Intact awareness is critical to performance on complex everyday activities and can be evaluated with functional cognition assessments.

Dental decision-making for persons with dementia: A systematic narrative review

Dental decision-making represents the establishment of a common understanding between the dental professional and the recipient of the intervention, which determines oral healthcare and dental treatment policies. Dental decision-making for persons with dementia can be challenging, and there have been no systematic reviews on this topic. Therefore, this systematic narrative review aimed to identify the current state of dental decision-making in persons with dementia. Literature search was performed using PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, and Google Scholar databases. Through the process of research selection, 7 articles with a high risk of bias were included in this study. This review clarified that there is limited information on the dental decision-making processes for persons with dementia. In conclusion, although this may be difficult due to different medical and socioeconomic conditions, the dilemma between the need to establish evidence for dental decision-making and medical ethics that prioritize a patient-centered position should be discussed globally in the future.

Risk-Taking Behavior Differs Between Older Adults with and without Mild Cognitive Impairment

Background

Adequately evaluating risk and making decisions is vital but understudied for older adults living independently but with compromised cognition, as seen in those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), specifically those with amnestic MCI (aMCI) which is associated with higher risk of conversion to Alzheimer's disease.

Objective

We propose to comprehensively evaluate risk-taking behaviors across domains important for everyday activities between an aMCI group and their cognitively healthy counterparts (HC).

Methods

A case-control study design. Data on risk-taking behaviors via the Domain-Specific Risk-Taking Scale (DOSPERT), and candidate confounding mental health factors (i.e., neurodegeneration, depression, and fatigue) were collected. Analyses on group difference and interaction between group and confounding factors on risk-taking behaviors were conducted.

Results

The aMCI group showed a higher likelihood of risk-taking than HC (t = 4.38, df = 73, p < 0.001). Moderation analysis showed fatigue (F = 5.91, p = 0.018) and presence of depression (F = 4.52, p = 0.037), but not neurodegeneration, as significant moderators for group and DOSPERT total score, controlling for sex. In post-hoc analyses, there was a significant relationship between both fatigue (B = -7.83, SE = 3.65, t = -2.14, p = 0.036), and presence of depression (B = -20.80, SE = 9.97, t = -2.09, p = 0.041), with DOSPERT total score for HC but not for aMCI. There were no significant relationships between neurodegeneration, fatigue, or depression with any specific risk-taking domains after correction for multiple comparisons.

Conclusions

Our results show differences in risk-taking behavior between older adults with and without intact cognition, and overall decision-making is affected by fatigue and depression in HC but not aMCI, together suggesting the importance of cognition in the ability to adjust risk-taking behaviors.

Self-perceived memory is negatively associated with chronic disease awareness: Evidence from blood biomarker data

Background and objectives

Cognitive misperception contributed to poor decision-making; yet their impact on health-related decisions is less known. We examined how self-perceived memory was associated with chronic disease awareness among older Chinese adults.

Research design and methods

Data were obtained from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. Nationally representative blood biomarkers were collected in 2015 to identify participants' dyslipidemia and diabetes status. Among participants with biomarker identified dyslipidemia or diabetes, disease awareness was defined as self-reported diagnosis of the conditions as of 2018. The association of self-perceived memory with chronic disease awareness was determined by weighted multivariate logistic regressions adjusting for cognitive ability and covariates.

Results

Among 4578 adults aged 60 and over, 1442 and 759 individuals were identified having dyslipidemia and diabetes, with proportions of disease awareness being 38.0% and 58.1%, respectively. The proportions were lower for individuals with better self-perceived memory and those with more impaired cognitive ability, showing opposite patterns. Adjusting for cognitive ability and covariates, self-perceived memory was negatively associated with the dyslipidemia (OR = 0.80, 95%CI: 0.63-1.02) and diabetes (OR = 0.71, 95%CI: 0.55-0.92) awareness. In particular, older adults with the highest level of self-perceived memory had significantly lower disease awareness as compared to those with the lowest level of self-perceived memory (OR = 0.51, 95%CI: 0.28-0.94 for dyslipidemia; and OR = 0.42, 95%CI: 0.21-0.84 for diabetes). The negative association was robust to adjusting for alternative cognitive measures, and was stronger for individuals with rural status, lower education, or living without children.

Discussion and implications

Cognitive misperception poses great challenges to chronic disease awareness. Targeted interventions and supports are needed, particularly for those more disadvantaged.

Mapping the knowledge domain of financial decision making: A scientometric and bibliometric study

Based on a 12-year bibliographic record collected from the Web of Science (Thomson Reuters) database, the present study aims to provide a macroscopic overview of the knowledge domain in financial decision making (FDM). A scientometric and bibliometric analysis was conducted on the literature published in the field from 2010 to 2021, using the CiteSpace software. The analysis focuses on the co-occurring categories, the geographic distributions, the vital references, the distribution of topics, as well as the research fronts and emerging trends of financial related decision making. The steady increase of papers published year by year demonstrated the increasing interest on this topic at the international level. The scientometric analysis of the literature showed that financial decision, investment decision, and financing decision stood out of the crowd of the research on FDM, suggesting their important role in FDM and its research. The results of citation burst analysis predicted the focus of topics, i.e., the impact of individual differences such as financial literacy, gender and age on FDM in the coming years. Different from the traditional approach of literature review, this bibliometric analysis offers a scientometric approach to reveal the status quo and the development trend of FDM by macro and quantitative means. In addition, future research directions for the field are recommended.
