Evidence for stripe correlations of spins and holes in copper oxide superconductors

Emergence of Competing Stripe Phases in Undoped Infinite-Layer Nickelates

Recent discovery of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates has ignited renewed theoretical and experimental interest in the role of electronic correlations in their properties. Here, using first-principles simulations, we show that the parent compound of the nickelate family, LaNiO_{2}, hosts competing low-energy stripe phases, similar to doped cuprates. The stripe states are shown to be driven by multiorbital electronic mechanisms and Peierls distortions. Our study indicates that both strong correlations and electron-phonon coupling effects play a key role in the physics of infinite-layer nickelates, and sheds light on the microscopic origin of electronic inhomogeneity and the lack of long-range order in the nickelates.

Exploring unconventional ferromagnetism in hole-doped LaCrAsO: insights into charge-transfer and magnetic interactions

Itinerant ferromagnetism due to the canonical double exchange (CDE) mechanism always occurs at low doping concentrations. Here we demonstrate the occurrence of robust itinerant ferromagnetism that can persist high doping concentrations. Using experimentally synthesized LaCrAsO as an illustrative example, we study the effects of hole doping via first-principles calculations and observe that the parent G-type antiferromagnetism vanishes quickly at a low doping concentration (∼0.20) and the system becomes a ferromagnetic metal due to the CDE mechanism. As the doping concentration continues to increase, the As 4p orbitals are gradually pushed up to the Fermi level and doped with holes. These ligand holes participate in the exchange interactions and drive the system toward ferromagnetism. Therefore, itinerant ferromagnetism doesn't terminate at an intermediate doping concentration as the CDE mechanism usually predicts. Furthermore, our results reveal that both the nearest and the next-nearest ferromagnetic exchange coupling strengths keep growing with doping concentration monotonically, showing that the emergent ferromagnetism mediated by As 4p orbitals is "stronger" than that of the CDE picture. Our work unlocks a new mechanism of itinerant ferromagnetism and potentially paves the way towards novel magneto-transport properties.

Variational Monte Carlo study of stripes as a function of doping in thet-t'Hubbard model

We perform variational Monte Carlo simulations of the single-band Hubbard model on the square lattice with both nearest (t) and next-nearest (t') neighbor hoppings. Our work investigates the consequences of increasing hole doping on the instauration of stripes and the behavior of the superconducting order parameter, with a discussion on how the two phenomena affect each other. We consider two different values of the next-nearest neighbor hopping parameter, that are appropriate for describing cuprate superconductors. We observe that stripes are the optimal state in a wide doping range; the stripe wavelength reduces at increasing doping, until stripes melt into a uniform state for large values of doping. Superconducting pair-pair correlations, indicating the presence of superconductivity, are always suppressed in the presence of stripes. Our results suggest that the phase diagram for the single-band Hubbard model is dominated by stripes, with superconductivity being possible only in a narrow doping range between striped states and a nonsuperconducting metal.

Evidence of striped electronic phases in a structurally modulated superlattice

The electronic properties of crystals can be manipulated by superimposing spatially periodic electric, magnetic or structural modulations. Long-wavelength modulations incommensurate with the atomic lattice are particularly interesting1, exemplified by recent advances in two-dimensional (2D) moiré materials2,3. Bulk van der Waals (vdW) superlattices4-8 hosting 2D interfaces between minimally disordered layers represent scalable bulk analogues of artificial vdW heterostructures and present a complementary venue to explore incommensurately modulated 2D states. Here we report the bulk vdW superlattice SrTa2S5 realizing an incommensurate one-dimensional (1D) structural modulation of 2D transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) H-TaS2 layers. High-quality electronic transport in the H-TaS2 layers, evidenced by quantum oscillations, is made anisotropic by the modulation and exhibits commensurability oscillations paralleling lithographically modulated 2D systems9-11. We also find unconventional, clean-limit superconductivity in SrTa2S5 with a pronounced suppression of interlayer relative to intralayer coherence. The in-plane magnetic field dependence of interlayer critical current, together with electron diffraction from the structural modulation, suggests superconductivity12-14 in SrTa2S5 is spatially modulated and mismatched between adjacent TMD layers. With phenomenology suggestive of pair-density wave superconductivity15-17, SrTa2S5 may present a pathway for microscopic evaluation of this unconventional order18-21. More broadly, SrTa2S5 establishes bulk vdW superlattices as versatile platforms to address long-standing predictions surrounding modulated electronic phases in the form of nanoscale vdW devices12,13 to macroscopic crystals22,23.

Magnon interactions in a moderately correlated Mott insulator

Quantum fluctuations in low-dimensional systems and near quantum phase transitions have significant influences on material properties. Yet, it is difficult to experimentally gauge the strength and importance of quantum fluctuations. Here we provide a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of magnon excitations in Mott insulating cuprates. From the thin film of SrCuO2, single- and bi-magnon dispersions are derived. Using an effective Heisenberg Hamiltonian generated from the Hubbard model, we show that the single-magnon dispersion is only described satisfactorily when including significant quantum corrections stemming from magnon-magnon interactions. Comparative results on La2CuO4 indicate that quantum fluctuations are much stronger in SrCuO2 suggesting closer proximity to a magnetic quantum critical point. Monte Carlo calculations reveal that other magnetic orders may compete with the antiferromagnetic Néel order as the ground state. Our results indicate that SrCuO2-due to strong quantum fluctuations-is a unique starting point for the exploration of novel magnetic ground states.

Strain-induced long-range charge-density wave order in the optimally doped Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6 superconductor

The mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity in copper oxides (cuprate) remains elusive, with the pseudogap phase considered a potential factor. Recent attention has focused on a long-range symmetry-broken charge-density wave (CDW) order in the underdoped regime, induced by strong magnetic fields. Here by 63,65Cu-nuclear magnetic resonance, we report the discovery of a long-range CDW order in the optimally doped Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6 superconductor, induced by in-plane strain exceeding ∣ε∣ = 0.15 %, which deliberately breaks the crystal symmetry of the CuO2 plane. We find that compressive/tensile strains reduce superconductivity but enhance CDW, leaving superconductivity to coexist with CDW. The findings show that a long-range CDW order is an underlying hidden order in the pseudogap state, not limited to the underdoped regime, becoming apparent under strain. Our result sheds light on the intertwining of various orders in the cuprates.

Tunable Non-Fermi Liquid Phase from Coupling to Two-Level Systems

We study a controlled large-N theory of electrons coupled to dynamical two-level systems (TLSs) via spatially random interactions. Such a physical situation arises when electrons scatter off low-energy excitations in a metallic glass, such as a charge or stripe glass. Our theory is governed by a non-Gaussian saddle point, which maps to the celebrated spin-boson model. By tuning the coupling strength we find that the model crosses over from a Fermi liquid at weak coupling to an extended region of non-Fermi liquid behavior at strong coupling, and realizes a marginal Fermi liquid at the crossover. Our results are valid for generic space dimensions d>1.

Enhancement of magnetism by tailoring synthesis conditions in electron-doped superconducting nanoparticles

A study on the effects of sample synthesis conditions on the particle size, structure, and magnetic properties of electron-doped cuprate superconductors of Eu1.85Ce0.15CuO4+α-δ (ECCO) nanoparticles has been carried out using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and the superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer (SQUID). The ECCO nanoparticles were prepared through the sol-gel method with various sintering and annealing temperatures. From TEM characterization, the average particle sizes are 87 nm and 103 nm for the sintering temperatures of 700 °C and 900 °C, respectively. The XRD results with structural Rietveld refinement reveal that the lattice constants and bond distance Cu-O change considerably compared to the bulk case. Reducing the particle and crystallite size to below 200 nm causes strong suppression in the superconducting state. From SQUID measurements it is found that none of the samples show superconducting behavior. An upturn in magnetic susceptibility below 10 K is observed in the sample when the crystallite size is in the range of 69 nm to 88 nm, indicating the existence of magnetism. The lower the sintering temperature of the sample synthesis, the higher the effective magnetic moment and Curie temperature. It suggests that the magnetic correlation is more developed in the smaller samples.

Peak effect and dynamics of stripe- and pattern-forming systems on a periodic one-dimensional substrate

We examine the ordering, pinning, and dynamics of two-dimensional pattern-forming systems interacting with a periodic one-dimensional substrate. In the absence of the substrate, particles with competing long-range repulsion and short-range attraction form anisotropic crystal, stripe, and bubble states. When the system is tuned across the stripe transition in the presence of a substrate, we find that there is a peak effect in the critical depinning force when the stripes align and become commensurate with the substrate. Under an applied drive, the anisotropic crystal and stripe states can exhibit soliton depinning and plastic flow. When the stripes depin plastically, they dynamically reorder into a moving stripe state that is perpendicular to the substrate trough direction. We also find that when the substrate spacing is smaller than the widths of the bubbles or stripes, the system forms pinned stripe states that are perpendicular to the substrate trough direction. The system exhibits multiple reentrant pinning effects as a function of increasing attraction, with the anisotropic crystal and large bubble states experiencing weak pinning but the stripe and smaller bubble states showing stronger pinning. We map out the different dynamic phases as a function of filling, the strength of the attractive interaction term, the substrate strength, and the drive, and demonstrate that the different phases produce identifiable features in the transport curves and particle orderings.

Charge density waves tuned by biaxial tensile stress

The precise arrangement and nature of atoms drive electronic phase transitions in condensed matter. To explore this tenuous link, we developed a true biaxial mechanical deformation device working at cryogenic temperatures, compatible with x-ray diffraction and transport measurements, well adapted to layered samples. Here we show that a slight deformation of TbTe3 can have a dramatic influence on its Charge Density Wave (CDW), with an orientational transition from c to a driven by the a/c parameter, a tiny coexistence region near a = c, and without space group change. The CDW transition temperature Tc displays a linear dependence witha / c - 1 while the gap saturates out of the coexistence region. This behaviour is well accounted for within a tight-binding model. Our results question the relationship between gap and Tc in RTe3 systems. This method opens a new route towards the study of coexisting or competing electronic orders in condensed matter.

Using strain to uncover the interplay between two- and three-dimensional charge density waves in high-temperature superconducting YBa2Cu3Oy

Uniaxial pressure provides an efficient approach to control charge density waves in YBa2Cu3Oy. It can enhance the correlation volume of ubiquitous short-range two-dimensional charge-density-wave correlations, and induces a long-range three-dimensional charge density wave, otherwise only accessible at large magnetic fields. Here, we use x-ray diffraction to study the strain dependence of these charge density waves and uncover direct evidence for a form of competition between them. We show that this interplay is qualitatively described by including strain effects in a nonlinear sigma model of competing superconducting and charge-density-wave orders. Our analysis suggests that strain stabilizes the 3D charge density wave in the regions between disorder-pinned domains of 2D charge density waves, and that the two orders compete at the boundaries of these domains. No signatures of discommensurations nor of pair density waves are observed. From a broader perspective, our results underscore the potential of strain tuning as a powerful tool for probing competing orders in quantum materials.

A microscopic view of checkerboard and striped charge orders through doping antiferromagnetic Mott insulator

The emergence of charge order in doped Mott insulators has received considerable attention due to its relevance to a variety of realistic materials and experiments. To investigate the interplay between magnetic and charge order, we have studied the semiclassical Kondo lattice model, which includes both electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom. By combining Langevin dynamical simulations with the kernel polynomial method, our results reveal the presence of charged stripe order, checkerboard order, and non-uniform charge disorder in the near-half-filling regime. Importantly, our simulations show that both the doping level and the strength of thes-dexchange coupling play a crucial role in facilitating charge order formation. These phases give rise to distinct electronic structures as well as excitations in the magnetic dynamics, providing insights into the underlying mechanism of charge ordering phenomena.

Absence of 3a0 charge density wave order in the infinite-layer nickelate NdNiO2

A hallmark of many unconventional superconductors is the presence of many-body interactions that give rise to broken-symmetry states intertwined with superconductivity. Recent resonant soft X-ray scattering experiments report commensurate 3a0 charge density wave order in infinite-layer nickelates, which has important implications regarding the universal interplay between charge order and superconductivity in both cuprates and nickelates. Here we present X-ray scattering and spectroscopy measurements on a series of NdNiO2+x samples, which reveal that the signatures of charge density wave order are absent in fully reduced, single-phase NdNiO2. The 3a0 superlattice peak instead originates from a partially reduced impurity phase where excess apical oxygens form ordered rows with three-unit-cell periodicity. The absence of any observable charge density wave order in NdNiO2 highlights a crucial difference between the phase diagrams of cuprate and nickelate superconductors.

Visualization of Alternating Triangular Domains of Charge Density Waves in 2H-NbSe_{2} by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy

The charge density wave (CDW) state of 2H-NbSe_{2} features commensurate domains separated by domain boundaries accompanied by phase slips known as discommensurations. We have unambiguously visualized the structure of CDW domains using a displacement-field measurement algorithm on a scanning tunneling microscopy image. Each CDW domain is delimited by three vertices and three edges of discommensurations and is designated by a triplet of integers whose sum identifies the types of commensurate structure. The observed structure is consistent with the alternating triangular tiling pattern predicted by a phenomenological Landau theory. The domain shape is affected by crystal defects and also by topological defects in the CDW phase factor. Our results provide a foundation for a complete understanding of the CDW state and its relation to the superconducting state.

Designing the stripe-ordered cuprate phase diagram through uniaxial-stress

The ability to efficiently control charge and spin in the cuprate high-temperature superconductors is crucial for fundamental research and underpins technological development. Here, we explore the tunability of magnetism, superconductivity, and crystal structure in the stripe phase of the cuprate La[Formula: see text]Ba[Formula: see text]CuO[Formula: see text], with [Formula: see text] = 0.115 and 0.135, by employing temperature-dependent (down to 400 mK) muon-spin rotation and AC susceptibility, as well as X-ray scattering experiments under compressive uniaxial stress in the CuO[Formula: see text] plane. A sixfold increase of the three-dimensional (3D) superconducting critical temperature [Formula: see text] and a full recovery of the 3D phase coherence is observed in both samples with the application of extremely low uniaxial stress of [Formula: see text]0.1 GPa. This finding demonstrates the removal of the well-known 1/8-anomaly of cuprates by uniaxial stress. On the other hand, the spin-stripe order temperature as well as the magnetic fraction at 400 mK show only a modest decrease under stress. Moreover, the onset temperatures of 3D superconductivity and spin-stripe order are very similar in the large stress regime. However, strain produces an inhomogeneous suppression of the spin-stripe order at elevated temperatures. Namely, a substantial decrease of the magnetic volume fraction and a full suppression of the low-temperature tetragonal structure is found under stress, which is a necessary condition for the development of the 3D superconducting phase with optimal [Formula: see text]. Our results evidence a remarkable cooperation between the long-range static spin-stripe order and the underlying crystalline order with the three-dimensional fully coherent superconductivity. Overall, these results suggest that the stripe- and the SC order may have a common physical mechanism.

Universal Stripe Symmetry of Short-Range Charge Density Waves in Cuprate Superconductors

The omnipresence of charge density waves (CDWs) across almost all cuprate families underpins a common organizing principle. However, a longstanding debate of whether its spatial symmetry is stripe or checkerboard remains unresolved. While CDWs in lanthanum- and yttrium-based cuprates possess a stripe symmetry, distinguishing these two scenarios is challenging for the short-range CDW in bismuth-based cuprates. Here, high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering is employed to uncover the spatial symmetry of the CDW in Bi2 Sr2 - x Lax CuO6 + δ . Across a wide range of doping and temperature, anisotropic CDW peaks with elliptical shapes are found in reciprocal space. Based on Fourier transform analysis of real-space models, the results are interpreted as evidence of unidirectional charge stripes, hosted by mutually 90°-rotated anisotropic domains. This work paves the way for a unified symmetry and microscopic description of CDW order in cuprates.

Evidence for Quantum Stripe Ordering in a Triangular Optical Lattice

Understanding strongly correlated quantum materials, such as high-T_{c} superconductors, iron-based superconductors, and twisted bilayer graphene systems, remains as one of the outstanding challenges in condensed matter physics. Quantum simulation with ultracold atoms in particular optical lattices, which provide orbital degrees of freedom, is a powerful tool to contribute new insights to this endeavor. Here, we report the experimental realization of an unconventional Bose-Einstein condensate of ^{87}Rb atoms populating degenerate p orbitals in a triangular optical lattice, exhibiting remarkably long coherence times. Using time-of-flight spectroscopy, we observe that this state spontaneously breaks the rotational symmetry and its momentum spectrum agrees with the theoretically predicted coexistence of exotic stripe and loop-current orders. Like certain strongly correlated electronic systems with intertwined orders, such as high-T_{c} cuprate superconductors, twisted bilayer graphene, and the recently discovered chiral density-wave state in kagome superconductors AV_{3}Sb_{5} (A=K, Rb, Cs), the newly demonstrated quantum state, in spite of its markedly different energy scale and the bosonic quantum statistics, exhibits multiple symmetry breakings at ultralow temperatures. These findings hold the potential to enhance our comprehension of the fundamental physics governing these intricate quantum materials.

Ferromagnetic Fluctuations in the Heavily Overdoped Regime of Single-Layer High-Tc Cuprate Superconductors

To investigate proposed ferromagnetic fluctuations in the so-called single-layer Bi-2201 and La-214 high-Tc cuprates, we performed magnetization and electrical resistivity measurements using single-layer Tl-2201 cuprates Tl2Ba2CuO6+δ and La-214 La2-xSrxCuO4 in the heavily overdoped regime. Magnetization of Tl2Ba2CuO6+δ and La2-xSrxCuO4 exhibited the tendency to be saturated in high magnetic fields at low temperatures, suggesting the precursor behavior toward the formation of a ferromagnetic order. It was found that the power of temperature n obtained from the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity is ~4/3 and ~5/3 for Bi-2201 and La2-xSrxCuO4, respectively, and is ~4/3 at high temperatures and ~5/3 at low temperatures in Tl2Ba2CuO6+δ. These results suggest that two- and three-dimensional ferromagnetic fluctuations exist in Bi-2201 and La2-xSrxCuO4, respectively. In Tl2Ba2CuO6+δ, it is suggested that the dimension of ferromagnetic fluctuations is two at high temperatures and three at low temperatures, respectively. The dimensionality of ferromagnetic fluctuations is understood in terms of the dimensionality of the crystal structure and the bonding of atoms in the blocking layer.

Discovery of Charge Order in the Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Fe_{x}NbS_{2}

The Fe intercalated transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD), Fe_{1/3}NbS_{2}, exhibits remarkable resistance switching properties and highly tunable spin ordering phases due to magnetic defects. We conduct synchrotron x-ray scattering measurements on both underintercalated (x=0.32) and overintercalated (x=0.35) samples. We discover a new charge order phase in the overintercalated sample, where the excess Fe atoms lead to a zigzag antiferromagnetic order. The agreement between the charge and magnetic ordering temperatures, as well as their intensity relationship, suggests a strong magnetoelastic coupling as the mechanism for the charge ordering. Our results reveal the first example of a charge order phase among the intercalated TMD family and demonstrate the ability to stabilize charge modulation by introducing electronic correlations, where the charge order is absent in bulk 2H-NbS_{2} compared to other pristine TMDs.

Charge stripes in the graphene-based materials

We present an analytical model of the charge density wave instability in graphene sheets within the intercalated graphite CaC6 compound. The instability yields the experimentally observed uniaxial charge stripes of periodically modulated electron density, coupled to the softest phonon mode of the superlattice consisting of the Ca atoms intercalated between graphene planes. The Fermi surface of the chemically doped graphene undergoes the novel type of instability driven by the mechanism that gains the condensation energy of the stripe state by the topological reconstruction of the Fermi surface. This mechanism appears to be entirely different from the one based on the Fermi surface nesting, which has been considered a paradigm in the present literature concerning the onset of charge density waves.

Signature of spin-phonon coupling driven charge density wave in a kagome magnet

The intertwining between spin, charge, and lattice degrees of freedom can give rise to unusual macroscopic quantum states, including high-temperature superconductivity and quantum anomalous Hall effects. Recently, a charge density wave (CDW) has been observed in the kagome antiferromagnet FeGe, indicative of possible intertwining physics. An outstanding question is that whether magnetic correlation is fundamental for the spontaneous spatial symmetry breaking orders. Here, utilizing elastic and high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering, we observe a c-axis superlattice vector that coexists with the 2[Formula: see text]2[Formula: see text]1 CDW vectors in the kagome plane. Most interestingly, between the magnetic and CDW transition temperatures, the phonon dynamical structure factor shows a giant phonon-energy hardening and a substantial phonon linewidth broadening near the c-axis wavevectors, both signaling the spin-phonon coupling. By first principles and model calculations, we show that both the static spin polarization and dynamic spin excitations intertwine with the phonon to drive the spatial symmetry breaking in FeGe.

Prevailing Charge Order in Overdoped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} beyond the Superconducting Dome

The extremely overdoped cuprates are generally considered to be Fermi liquid metals without exotic orders, whereas the underdoped cuprates harbor intertwined states. Contrary to this conventional wisdom, using Cu L_{3}-edge and O K-edge resonant x-ray scattering, we reveal a charge order (CO) correlation in overdoped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} (0.35≤x≤0.6) beyond the superconducting dome. This CO has a periodicity of ∼6 lattice units with correlation lengths of ∼20 lattice units. It shows similar in-plane momentum and polarization dependence and dispersive excitations as the CO of underdoped cuprates, but its maximum intensity differs along the c direction and persists up to 300 K. This CO correlation cannot be explained by the Fermi surface instability and its origin remains to be understood. Our results suggest that CO is prevailing in the overdoped metallic regime and requires a reassessment of the picture of overdoped cuprates as weakly correlated Fermi liquids.

Effect of Ni and Zn substitution on the physical and electrical properties of NdBaSrCu3O7−δ high temperature superconductor

Polycrystalline NdBaSrCu[Formula: see text]MxO[Formula: see text] samples ([Formula: see text] or Zn for [Formula: see text]) were prepared via solid-state reaction and examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), AC susceptibility and electrical resistance (dc) measurements. This study is focused on the effect of magnetic and non-magnetic particles substitution on the superconductivity of this tetragonal NdBaSrCu3O[Formula: see text] sample. There is no significant dependence of doping concentration for the changes of a-, b-lattice parameter but c-lattice parameter increased with both Ni and Zn substituted samples contrary to the ionic size considerations of the dopants. Results showed decrease of the critical temperature, [Formula: see text] and critical current density [Formula: see text] with increase of both doping contents. [Formula: see text] is the peak temperature of the imaginary part of the complex AC susceptibility, [Formula: see text]. Decrease of [Formula: see text] is related to the disruption of spin correlation of the CuO2 planes. Both doping only affect the [Formula: see text] without changing the transition width. The results showed that both Ni and Zn substitutions alter the quantity of spin-singlet pairs but have no effect on the size of the spin gap in the ladder. However, Zn doping more clearly lowered the [Formula: see text] than Ni doping. It is proposed that Zn, a non-magnetic dopant, caused a greater induction of unpaired charge carriers.

Verwey transition as evolution from electronic nematicity to trimerons via electron-phonon coupling

Understanding the driving mechanisms behind metal-insulator transitions (MITs) is a critical step toward controlling material's properties. Since the proposal of charge order-induced MIT in magnetite Fe3O4 in 1939 by Verwey, the nature of the charge order and its role in the transition have remained elusive. Recently, a trimeron order was found in the low-temperature structure of Fe3O4; however, the expected transition entropy change in forming trimeron is greater than the observed value, which arises a reexamination of the ground state in the high-temperature phase. Here, we use electron diffraction to unveil that a nematic charge order on particular Fe sites emerges in the high-temperature structure of bulk Fe3O4 and that, upon cooling, a competitive intertwining of charge and lattice orders arouses the Verwey transition. Our findings discover an unconventional type of electronic nematicity in correlated materials and offer innovative insights into the transition mechanism in Fe3O4 via the electron-phonon coupling.

A model of d-wave superconductivity, antiferromagnetism, and charge order on the square lattice

We describe the confining instabilities of a proposed quantum spin liquid underlying the pseudogap metal state of the hole-doped cuprates. The spin liquid can be described by a SU(2) gauge theory of Nf = 2 massless Dirac fermions carrying fundamental gauge charges-this is the low-energy theory of a mean-field state of fermionic spinons moving on the square lattice with π-flux per plaquette in the ℤ2 center of SU(2). This theory has an emergent SO(5)f global symmetry and is presumed to confine at low energies to the Néel state. At nonzero doping (or smaller Hubbard repulsion U at half-filling), we argue that confinement occurs via the Higgs condensation of bosonic chargons carrying fundamental SU(2) gauge charges also moving in π ℤ2-flux. At half-filling, the low-energy theory of the Higgs sector has Nb = 2 relativistic bosons with a possible emergent SO(5)b global symmetry describing rotations between a d-wave superconductor, period-2 charge stripes, and the time-reversal breaking "d-density wave" state. We propose a conformal SU(2) gauge theory with Nf = 2 fundamental fermions, Nb = 2 fundamental bosons, and a SO(5)f×SO(5)b global symmetry, which describes a deconfined quantum critical point between a confining state which breaks SO(5)f and a confining state which breaks SO(5)b. The pattern of symmetry breaking within both SO(5)s is determined by terms likely irrelevant at the critical point, which can be chosen to obtain a transition between Néel order and d-wave superconductivity. A similar theory applies at nonzero doping and large U, with longer-range couplings of the chargons leading to charge order with longer periods.

Robust charge-density-wave correlations in the electron-doped single-band Hubbard model

There is growing evidence that the hole-doped single-band Hubbard and t - J models do not have a superconducting ground state reflective of the high-temperature cuprate superconductors but instead have striped spin- and charge-ordered ground states. Nevertheless, it is proposed that these models may still provide an effective low-energy model for electron-doped materials. Here we study the finite temperature spin and charge correlations in the electron-doped Hubbard model using quantum Monte Carlo dynamical cluster approximation calculations and contrast their behavior with those found on the hole-doped side of the phase diagram. We find evidence for a charge modulation with both checkerboard and unidirectional components decoupled from any spin-density modulations. These correlations are inconsistent with a weak-coupling description based on Fermi surface nesting, and their doping dependence agrees qualitatively with resonant inelastic x-ray scattering measurements. Our results provide evidence that the single-band Hubbard model describes the electron-doped cuprates.

Critical nematic correlations throughout the superconducting doping range in Bi2-zPbzSr2-yLayCuO6+x

Charge modulations have been widely observed in cuprates, suggesting their centrality for understanding the high-T_c superconductivity in these materials. However, the dimensionality of these modulations remains controversial, including whether their wavevector is unidirectional or bidirectional, and also whether they extend seamlessly from the surface of the material into the bulk. Material disorder presents severe challenges to understanding the charge modulations through bulk scattering techniques. We use a local technique, scanning tunneling microscopy, to image the static charge modulations on Bi_2-zPb_zSr_2-yLa_yCuO_6+x. The ratio of the phase correlation length ξ_CDW to the orientation correlation length ξ_orient points to unidirectional charge modulations. By computing new critical exponents at free surfaces including that of the pair connectivity correlation function, we show that these locally 1D charge modulations are actually a bulk effect resulting from classical 3D criticality of the random field Ising model throughout the entire superconducting doping range.

Effect of copper oxide nanoparticles and light-emitting diode irradiation on the cell viability and osteogenic/odontogenic differentiation of human stem cells from the apical papilla

OBJECTIVES

This experimental study aimed to assess the effect of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) and light-emitting diode (LED) irradiation on the cell viability and osteogenic/odontogenic differentiation of human SCAPs.

METHODS

After the culture of SCAPs, the effects of different concentrations of CuONPs on cell viability were evaluated by the methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) assay after 24 and 48 h, and the optimal concentration was determined (n = 12). SCAPs were then divided into four groups based on the type of treatment: (I) no-treatment control group, (II) exposure to CuONPs, (III) LED irradiation (635 nm, 200 mW/cm²) for 30 s, and (IV) exposure to CuONPs combined with LED irradiation. CuONPs were synthesized by a green technique, which was based on reduction and simultaneous stability of copper ions by using the pomegranate peel extract. After treatments, the expression of osteogenic/odontogenic markers including dentin sialophosphoprotein (DSPP), bone sialoprotein (BSP), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and dentin matrix acidic phosphoprotein 1 (DMP1) was evaluated in all four groups using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) (n = 16). Also, osteogenic differentiation of SCAPs was evaluated qualitatively by alizarin red staining (ARS) to assess the matrix mineralization (n = 4). SPSS version 18 was used for data evaluation. The Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests were used to compare the groups.

RESULTS

Exposure to 1 µg/mL CuONPs resulted in maximum viability of SCAPs. Concentrations of CuONPs over 10 µg/mL significantly decreased the viability of SCAPs. Real-time PCR showed that the expression of DMP1, BSP, ALP, and DSPP in CuONPs + LED and LED groups was significantly higher than that in CuONPs and control groups at both 24 and 48 h (P < 0.05). The density of ARS increased in all experimental groups after 24 h, and in CuONPs + LED and CuONPs groups after 48 h, compared to the control group.

CONCLUSION

Addition of CuONPs and LED irradiation of SCAPs in the culture medium significantly enhanced their osteogenic/odontogenic differentiation.

Partitioning the Two-Leg Spin Ladder in Ba2Cu1 - x Zn x TeO6: From Magnetic Order through Spin-Freezing to Paramagnetism

Ba₂CuTeO₆ has attracted significant attention as it contains a two-leg spin ladder of Cu²⁺ cations that lies in close proximity to a quantum critical point. Recently, Ba₂CuTeO₆ has been shown to accommodate chemical substitutions, which can significantly tune its magnetic behavior. Here, we investigate the effects of substitution for non-magnetic Zn²⁺ impurities at the Cu²⁺ site, partitioning the spin ladders. Results from bulk thermodynamic and local muon magnetic characterization on the Ba₂Cu_1 - x Zn _x TeO₆ solid solution (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.6) indicate that Zn²⁺ partitions the Cu²⁺ spin ladders into clusters and can be considered using the percolation theory. As the average cluster size decreases with increasing Zn²⁺ substitution, there is an evolving transition from long-range order to spin-freezing as the critical cluster size is reached between x = 0.1 to x = 0.2, beyond which the behavior became paramagnetic. This demonstrates well-controlled tuning of the magnetic disorder, which is highly topical across a range of low-dimensional Cu²⁺-based materials. However, in many of these cases, the chemical disorder is also relatively strong in contrast to Ba₂CuTeO₆ and its derivatives. Therefore, Ba₂Cu_1 - x Zn _x TeO₆ provides an ideal model system for isolating the effect of defects and segmentation in low-dimensional quantum magnets.

Charge order driven by multiple-Q spin fluctuations in heavily electron-doped iron selenide superconductors

Intertwined spin and charge orders have been widely studied in high-temperature superconductors, since their fluctuations may facilitate electron pairing; however, they are rarely identified in heavily electron-doped iron selenides. Here, using scanning tunneling microscopy, we show that when the superconductivity of (Li_0.84Fe_0.16OH)Fe_1-xSe is suppressed by introducing Fe-site defects, a short-ranged checkerboard charge order emerges, propagating along the Fe-Fe directions with an approximately 2a_Fe period. It persists throughout the whole phase space tuned by Fe-site defect density, from a defect-pinned local pattern in optimally doped samples to an extended order in samples with lower T_c or non-superconducting. Intriguingly, our simulations indicate that the charge order is likely driven by multiple-Q spin density waves originating from the spin fluctuations observed by inelastic neutron scattering. Our study proves the presence of a competing order in heavily electron-doped iron selenides, and demonstrates the potential of charge order as a tool to detect spin fluctuations.

Intersite Coulomb Interactions in Charge-Ordered Systems

Using ab initio approaches for extended Hubbard interactions coupled to phonons, we reveal that the intersite Coulomb interaction plays important roles in determining various distinctive phases of the paradigmatic charge-ordered materials of Ba_{1-x}K_{x}AO_{3} (A=Bi and Sb). We demonstrated that all their salient doping dependent experiment features such as breathing instabilities, anomalous phonon dispersions, and transition between charge-density wave and superconducting states can be accounted for very well if self-consistently obtained nearest neighbor Hubbard interactions are included, thus establishing a minimal criterion for reliable descriptions of spontaneous charge orders in solids.

Monte Carlo study of cuprate superconductors in a four-bandd-pmodel: role of orbital degrees of freedom

Understanding the various competing phases in cuprate superconductors is a long-standing challenging problem. Recent studies have shown that orbital degrees of freedom, both Cue_gorbitals and Oporbitals, are a key ingredient for a unified understanding of cuprate superconductors, including the material dependence. Here we investigate a four-bandd-pmodel derived from the first-principles calculations with the variational Monte Carlo method, which allows us to elucidate competing phases on an equal footing. The obtained results can consistently explain the doping dependence of superconductivity, antiferromagnetic and stripe phases, phase separation in the underdoped region, and also novel magnetism in the heavily-overdoped region. The presence ofporbitals is critical to the charge-stripe features, which induce two types of stripe phases withs)-wave andd-wave bond stripe. On the other hand, the presence ofdz2orbital is indispensable to material dependence of the superconducting transition temperature (Tc), and enhances local magnetic moment as a source of novel magnetism in the heavily-overdoped region as well. These findings beyond one-band description could provide a major step toward a full explanation of unconventional normal state and highTcin cuprate supercondutors.

Portable Device for Multipurpose Research on Dendritic Yanson Point Contacts and Quantum Sensing

Quantum structures are ideal objects by which to discover and study new sensor mechanisms and implement advanced approaches in sensor analysis to develop innovative sensor devices. Among them, one of the most interesting representatives is the Yanson point contact. It allows the implementation of a simple technological chain to activate the quantum mechanisms of selective detection in gaseous and liquid media. In this work, a portable device for multipurpose research on dendritic Yanson point contacts and quantum sensing was developed and manufactured. The device allows one to create dendritic Yanson point contacts and study their quantum properties, which are clearly manifested in the process of the electrochemical cyclic switchover effect. The device tests demonstrated that it was possible to gather data on the compositions and characteristics of the synthesized substances, and on the electrochemical processes that influence the production of dendritic Yanson point contacts, as well as on the electrophysical processes that provide information on the quantum nature of the electrical conductance of dendritic Yanson point contacts. The small size of the device makes it simple to integrate into a micro-Raman spectrometer setup. The developed device may be used as a prototype for designing a quantum sensor that will serve as the foundation for cutting-edge sensor technologies, as well as be applied to research into atomic-scale junctions, single-atom transistors, and any relative subjects.

Fate of charge order in overdoped La-based cuprates

In high-temperature cuprate superconductors, stripe order refers broadly to a coupled spin and charge modulation with a commensuration of eight and four lattice units, respectively. How this stripe order evolves across optimal doping remains a controversial question. Here we present a systematic resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of weak charge correlations in La2-xSrxCuO4 and La1.8-xEu0.2SrxCuO4. Ultra high energy resolution experiments demonstrate the importance of the separation of inelastic and elastic scattering processes. Long-range temperature-dependent stripe order is only found below optimal doping. At higher doping, short-range temperature-independent correlations are present up to the highest doping measured. This transformation is distinct from and preempts the pseudogap critical doping. We argue that the doping and temperature-independent short-range correlations originate from unresolved electron-phonon coupling that broadly peaks at the stripe ordering vector. In La2-xSrxCuO4, long-range static stripe order vanishes around optimal doping and we discuss both quantum critical and crossover scenarios.

Charge density waves in infinite-layer NdNiO2 nickelates

In materials science, much effort has been devoted to the reproduction of superconductivity in chemical compositions, analogous to cuprate superconductors since their discovery over 30 years ago. This approach was recently successful in realising superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates^1-6. Although differing from cuprates in electronic and magnetic properties, strong Coulomb interactions suggest that infinite-layer nickelates have a propensity towards various symmetry-breaking orders that populate cuprates^7-10. Here we report the observation of charge density waves (CDWs) in infinite-layer NdNiO₂ films using Ni L₃ resonant X-ray scattering. Remarkably, CDWs form in Nd 5d and Ni 3d orbitals at the same commensurate wavevector (0.333, 0) reciprocal lattice units, with non-negligible out-of-plane dependence and an in-plane correlation length of up to ~60 Å. Spectroscopic studies reveal a strong connection between CDWs and Nd 5d-Ni 3d orbital hybridization. Upon entering the superconducting state at 20% Sr doping, the CDWs disappear. Our work demonstrates the existence of CDWs in infinite-layer nickelates with a multiorbital character distinct from cuprates, which establishes their low-energy physics.

Coherent emission from surface Josephson plasmons in striped cuprates

We observe anomalous terahertz emission in photo-excited high-TC cuprates with coexisting superconductivity and charge-stripe order, in absence of any external magnetic field or current bias. Because this phenomenon should be forbidden by symmetry, our observation indicates a symmetry breaking in the stripe phase. The emission spectrum reveals the excitation of surface Josephson plasmons, which are generally dark modes but become coupled to the electromagnetic continuum in these materials by the presence of stripes. The study of coherent anomalous terahertz emission emerges as a sensitive tool to probe the symmetry of superconductors in the presence of frustrated couplings, which is a key topic in the physics of these materials.

The interplay between charge order and superconductivity remains one of the central themes of research in quantum materials. In the case of cuprates, the coupling between striped charge fluctuations and local electromagnetic fields is especially important, as it affects transport properties, coherence, and dimensionality of superconducting correlations. Here, we study the emission of coherent terahertz radiation in single-layer cuprates of the La_2-xBa_xCuO₄ family, for which this effect is expected to be forbidden by symmetry. We find that emission vanishes for compounds in which the stripes are quasi-static but is activated when c-axis inversion symmetry is broken by incommensurate or fluctuating charge stripes, such as in La_1.905Ba_0.095CuO₄ and in La_1.845Ba_0.155CuO₄. In this case, terahertz radiation is emitted by surface Josephson plasmons, which are generally dark modes, but couple to free space electromagnetic radiation because of the stripe modulation.

Synthesis of CuO nanoparticles stabilized with gelatin for potential use in food packaging applications

In the present study, a method for the synthesis of gelatin-stabilized copper oxide nanoparticles was developed. Synthesis was carried out by direct chemical precipitation. Copper sulfate, chloride, and acetate were used as precursors for the copper oxide synthesis. Gelatin was used as a stabilizer. It was found that the formation of monophase copper oxide II only occurred when copper acetate was used as a precursor. Our results showed that particles of the smallest diameter are formed in an aqueous medium (18 ± 6 nm), and those of th largest diameter—in an isobutanol medium (370 ± 131 nm). According to the photon correlation spectroscopy data, copper oxide nanoparticles synthesized in an aqueous medium were highly stable and had a monomodal size distribution with an average hydrodynamic radius of 61 nm. The study of the pH effect on the colloidal stability of copper oxide nanoparticles showed that the sample was stable in the pH range of 6.8 to 11.98. A possible mechanism for the pH influence on the stability of copper oxide nanoparticles is described. The effect of the ionic strength of the solution on the stability of the CuO nanoparticles sol was also studied, and the results showed that Ca²⁺ ions had the greatest effect on the sample stability. IR spectroscopy showed that the interaction of CuO nanoparticles with gelatin occurred through the hydroxyl group. It was found that CuO nanoparticles stabilized with gelatin have a fungicidal activity at concentration equivalent 2.5 · 10⁻³ mol/L and as a material for food nanopackaging can provide an increase in the shelf life of products on the example of strawberries and tomatoes. We investigated the possibility of using methylcellulose films modified with CuO nanoparticles for packaging and storage of hard cheese “Holland”. The distribution of CuO nanoparticles in the methylcellulose film was uniform. We found that methylcellulose films modified with CuO nanoparticles inhibited the growth and development of QMAFAM, coliforms, yeast and mold in experimental cheese sa mples. Our research has shown that during the cheese storage in thermostat at 35 ± 1 °C for 7 days, CuO nanoparticles migrated to the product from the film. Nevertheless, it is worth noting that the maximum change in the concentration of copper in the experimental samples was only 0.12 µg/mg, which is not a toxic concentration. In general, the small value of migration of CuO nanoparticles confirms the high stability of the developed preparation. Our results indicated that the CuO nanoparticles stabilized with gelatin have a high potential for use in food packaging – both as an independent nanofilm and as part of other packaging materials.

Recent Development of Ultrafast Optical Characterizations for Quantum Materials

The advent of intense ultrashort optical pulses spanning a frequency range from terahertz to the visible has opened a new era in the experimental investigation and manipulation of quantum materials. The generation of strong optical field in an ultrashort time scale enables the steering of quantum materials nonadiabatically, inducing novel phenomenon or creating new phases which may not have an equilibrium counterpart. Ultrafast time-resolved optical techniques have provided rich information and played an important role in characterization of the nonequilibrium and nonlinear properties of solid systems. Here, some of the recent progress of ultrafast optical techniques and their applications to the detection and manipulation of physical properties in selected quantum materials are reviewed. Specifically, the new development in the detection of the Higgs mode and photoinduced nonequilibrium response in the study of superconductors by time-resolved terahertz spectroscopy are discussed.

Enhancedd-wave pairing in the two-dimensional Hubbard model with periodically modulated hopping amplitudes

Utilizing determinant quantum Monte Carlo algorithm, the evolution of thed-wave pairing in the Hubbard model on the square lattice tuned by the periodically modulated hopping amplitudes is studied. The hopping amplitudes are homogeneous in thexˆ-direction, while in theyˆ-direction the hopping amplitudes are modulated with periodP, wherety=t+dt,ty'=t-(P-1)dt, and the modulation periodPequals 2, 3 and 4 lattice spacings. The latter two modulation periods are motivated by the observation of period-3 and period-4 stripe order in cuprate superconductors. For all the periodsP, we find that the modulated hopping inhomogeneity enhances thed-wave pairing and an optimal inhomogeneity exists.

Nanoscale Antiferromagnetic Domain Imaging using Full-Field Resonant X-ray Magnetic Diffraction Microscopy

The physical properties of magnetic materials frequently depend not only on the microscopic spin and electronic structures, but also on the structures of mesoscopic length scales that emerge, for instance, from domain formations, or chemical and/or electronic phase separations. However, experimental access to such mesoscopic structures is currently limited, especially for antiferromagnets with net zero magnetization. Here, full-field microscopy and resonant magnetic X-ray diffraction are combined to visualize antiferromagnetic (AF) domains of the spin-orbit Mott insulator Sr₂ IrO₄ with area over ≈0.1 mm² and with spatial resolution as high as ≈150 nm. With the unprecedented wide field of views and high spatial resolution, an intertwining of two AF domains on a length comparable to the measured average AF domain wall width of 545 nm is revealed. This mesoscopic structure comprises a substantial portion of the sample surface, and thus can result in a macroscopic response unexpected from its microscopic magnetic structure. In particular, the symmetry analysis presented in this work shows that the inversion symmetry, which is preserved by the microscopic AF order, becomes ill-defined at the mesoscopic length scale. This result underscores the importance of this novel technique for a thorough understanding of the physical properties of antiferromagnets.

Tracking the nematicity in cuprate superconductors: a resistivity study under uniaxial pressure

Overshadowing the superconducting dome in hole-doped cuprates, the pseudogap state is still one of the mysteries that no consensus can be achieved. It has been suggested that the rotational symmetry is broken in this state and may result in a nematic phase transition, whose temperature seems to coincide with the onset temperature of the pseudogap stateT∗around optimal doping level, raising the question whether the pseudogap results from the establishment of the nematic order. Here we report results of resistivity measurements under uniaxial pressure on several hole-doped cuprates, where the normalized slope of the elastoresistivityζcan be obtained as illustrated in iron-based superconductors. The temperature dependence ofζalong particular lattice axis exhibits kink feature atT_kand shows Curie-Weiss-like behavior above it, which may suggest a spontaneous nematic transition. WhileT_kseems to be the same asT∗around the optimal doping and in the overdoped region, they become very different in underdoped La2-xSr_xCuO₄. Our results suggest that the nematic order, if indeed existing, is an electronic phase within the pseudogap state.

Ubiquitous defect-induced density wave instability in monolayer graphene

Quantum materials are notoriously sensitive to their environments, where small perturbations can tip a system toward one of several competing ground states. Graphene hosts a rich assortment of such competing phases, including a bond density wave instability ("Kekulé distortion") that couples electrons at the K/K' valleys and breaks the lattice symmetry. Here, we report observations of a ubiquitous Kekulé distortion across multiple graphene systems. We show that extremely dilute concentrations of surface atoms (less than three adsorbed atoms every 1000 graphene unit cells) can self-assemble and trigger the onset of a global Kekulé density wave phase. Combining complementary momentum-sensitive angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) measurements, we confirm the presence of this density wave phase and observe the opening of an energy gap. Our results reveal an unexpected sensitivity of the graphene lattice to dilute surface disorder and show that adsorbed atoms offer an attractive route toward designing novel phases in two-dimensional materials.

Changes in the Structural Parameters and Effective Magnetic Moment of Eu2−xCexCuO4+α−δ by Zn Substitution

The effect of nonmagnetic Zn impurities on the structural parameters and effective magnetic moment of electron-doped superconducting cuprates Eu2−xCexCu1−yZnyO4+α−δ (ECCZO) with x = 0.10 and 0.15 and y = 0 and 0.01 has been investigated using XRD and SQUID measurements. From XRD measurements, it is found that the lattice parameter of c and the Cu-O bond length increase with increasing y. The crystallite size of ECCZO samples was relatively smaller than the sample without impurities determined by the Debye–Scherrer equation and the W-H Plot method. Changes in the lattice parameters of c and Cu-O bond length can affect the appearance of superconductivity (Tc). The smaller the value of the lattice parameter of c and the Cu-O bond length causes the distance between the conducting layer and the charge reservoir to be close enough so that the charge transfer process becomes easier. From the magnetic susceptibility measurement, paramagnetic characteristics were observed for samples with x = 0.10. Meanwhile, for samples with x = 0.15, diamagnetic characteristics can be identified in sample with y = 0. The onset of Tc was observed around 11 K, as indicated by a change from paramagnetic to diamagnetic characteristics. The superconductivity phase disappears with y = 0.01. The effective magnetic moments in samples with y = 0 are smaller than those in samples with y = 0.01. The effective magnetic moment in ECCZO can be contributed by Cu2+. When the amount of Cu2+ decreases due to the addition of nonmagnetic Zn2+ atoms, the overall effective magnetic moment value also decreases. Another possibility that causes a decrease in the value of the magnetic moment of the ECCZO is the existence of stripe-pinning model, which results in suppressed superconductivity by Zn.

Enhanced charge density wave coherence in a light-quenched, high-temperature superconductor

Superconductivity and charge density waves (CDWs) are competitive, yet coexisting, orders in cuprate superconductors. To understand their microscopic interdependence, a probe capable of discerning their interaction on its natural length and time scale is necessary. We use ultrafast resonant soft x-ray scattering to track the transient evolution of CDW correlations in YBa₂Cu₃O_6+x after the quench of superconductivity by an infrared laser pulse. We observe a nonthermal response of the CDW order characterized by a near doubling of the correlation length within ≈1 picosecond of the superconducting quench. Our results are consistent with a model in which the interaction between superconductivity and CDWs manifests inhomogeneously through disruption of spatial coherence, with superconductivity playing the dominant role in stabilizing CDW topological defects, such as discommensurations.

Unveiling Unequivocal Charge Stripe Order in a Prototypical Cuprate Superconductor

In the cuprates, high-temperature superconductivity, spin-density-wave order, and charge-density-wave (CDW) order are intertwined, and symmetry determination is challenging due to domain formation. We investigated the CDW in the prototypical cuprate La_{1.88}Sr_{0.12}CuO_{4} via x-ray diffraction employing uniaxial pressure as a domain-selective stimulus to establish the unidirectional nature of the CDW unambiguously. A fivefold enhancement of the CDW amplitude is found when homogeneous superconductivity is partially suppressed by magnetic field. This field-induced state provides an ideal search environment for a putative pair-density-wave state.

Domain Formation Driven by the Entropy of Topological Edge Modes

In this Letter we study interacting systems with spontaneous discrete symmetry breaking, where the degenerate symmetry-broken states are topologically distinct gapped phases. Edge modes appear at domain walls between the two topological phases. In the presence of a weak disorder field conjugate to the order parameter, we find that the entropy of the edge modes drives a thermal transition between a gapped uniform phase and a phase with a disorder-induced domain structure. We characterize this transition using a phenomenological Landau functional, and corroborate our conclusions with a concrete microscopic model. Finally, we discuss the possibilities of experimental signatures of this phase transition, and propose graphene-based moiré heterostructures as candidate materials in which such a phase transition can be detected.

Uniaxial pressure induced stripe order rotation in La1.88Sr0.12CuO4

Static stripe order is detrimental to superconductivity. Yet, it has been proposed that transverse stripe fluctuations may enhance the inter-stripe Josephson coupling and thus promote superconductivity. Direct experimental studies of stripe dynamics, however, remain difficult. From a strong-coupling perspective, transverse stripe fluctuations are realized in the form of dynamic “kinks”—sideways shifting stripe sections. Here, we show how modest uniaxial pressure tuning reorganizes directional kink alignment. Our starting point is La1.88Sr0.12CuO4 where transverse kink ordering results in a rotation of stripe order away from the crystal axis. Application of mild uniaxial pressure changes the ordering pattern and pins the stripe order to the crystal axis. This reordering occurs at a much weaker pressure than that to detwin the stripe domains and suggests a rather weak transverse stripe stiffness. Weak spatial stiffness and transverse quantum fluctuations are likely key prerequisites for stripes to coexist with superconductivity.
