Zinc supplementation in children and adolescents with acute leukemia

Nutritional interventions in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia undergoing antineoplastic treatment: a systematic review

BACKGROUND

A compromised nutritional status jeopardizes a positive prognosis in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) patients. In low- and middle-income countries, ~ 50% of children with ALL are malnourished at diagnosis time, and undergoing antineoplastic treatment increases the risk of depleting their nutrient stores. Nutrition interventions are implemented in patients with cancer related malnutrition. We aimed to evaluate the effect of nutrition interventions in children diagnosed with ALL under treatment.

METHODS

Using a predefined protocol, we searched for published or unpublished randomized controlled trials in: Cochrane CENTRAL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, LILACS, and SciELO, and conducted complementary searches. Studies where at least 50% of participants had an ALL diagnosis in children ≤ 18 years, active antineoplastic treatment, and a nutrition intervention were included. Study selection and data extraction were conducted independently by three reviewers, and assessment of the risk of bias by two reviewers. Results were synthesized in both tabular format and narratively.

RESULTS

Twenty-five studies (out of 4097 records) satisfied the inclusion requirements. There was a high risk of bias in eighteen studies. Interventions analyzed were classified by compound/food (n = 14), micronutrient (n = 8), and nutritional support (n = 3). Within each group the interventions and components (dose and time) tested were heterogeneous. In relation to our primary outcomes, none of the studies reported fat-free mass as an outcome. Inflammatory and metabolic markers related to nutritional status and anthropometric measurements were reported in many studies but varied greatly across the studies. For our secondary outcomes, fat mass or total body water were not reported as an outcome in any of the studies. However, some different adverse events were reported in some studies.

CONCLUSIONS

This review highlights the need to conduct high-quality randomized controlled trials for nutrition interventions in children with ALL, based on their limited number and heterogeneous outcomes.

An Interpretable Machine Learning Framework for Rare Disease: A Case Study to Stratify Infection Risk in Pediatric Leukemia

Background: Datasets on rare diseases, like pediatric acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), have small sample sizes that hinder machine learning (ML). The objective was to develop an interpretable ML framework to elucidate actionable insights from small tabular rare disease datasets. Methods: The comprehensive framework employed optimized data imputation and sampling, supervised and unsupervised learning, and literature-based discovery (LBD). The framework was deployed to assess treatment-related infection in pediatric AML and ALL. Results: An interpretable decision tree classified the risk of infection as either "high risk" or "low risk" in pediatric ALL (n = 580) and AML (n = 132) with accuracy of ∼79%. Interpretable regression models predicted the discrete number of developed infections with a mean absolute error (MAE) of 2.26 for bacterial infections and an MAE of 1.29 for viral infections. Features that best explained the development of infection were the chemotherapy regimen, cancer cells in the central nervous system at initial diagnosis, chemotherapy course, leukemia type, Down syndrome, race, and National Cancer Institute risk classification. Finally, SemNet 2.0, an open-source LBD software that links relationships from 33+ million PubMed articles, identified additional features for the prediction of infection, like glucose, iron, neutropenia-reducing growth factors, and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Conclusions: The developed ML framework enabled state-of-the-art, interpretable predictions using rare disease tabular datasets. ML model performance baselines were successfully produced to predict infection in pediatric AML and ALL.

Preventing and Controlling Zinc Deficiency Across the Life Course: A Call to Action

Through diverse roles, zinc determines a greater number of critical life functions than any other single micronutrient. Beyond the well-recognized importance of zinc for child growth and resistance to infections, zinc has numerous specific roles covering the regulation of glucose metabolism, and growing evidence links zinc deficiency with increased risk of diabetes and cardiometabolic disorders. Zinc nutriture is, thus, vitally important to health across the life course. Zinc deficiency is also one of the most common forms of micronutrient malnutrition globally. A clearer estimate of the burden of health disparity attributable to zinc deficiency in adulthood and later life emerges when accounting for its contribution to global elevated fasting blood glucose and related noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). Yet progress attenuating its prevalence has been limited due, in part, to the lack of sensitive and specific methods to assess human zinc status. This narrative review covers recent developments in our understanding of zinc's role in health, the impact of the changing climate and global context on zinc intake, novel functional biomarkers showing promise for monitoring population-level interventions, and solutions for improving population zinc intake. It aims to spur on implementation of evidence-based interventions for preventing and controlling zinc deficiency across the life course. Increasing zinc intake and combating global zinc deficiency requires context-specific strategies and a combination of complementary, evidence-based interventions, including supplementation, food fortification, and food and agricultural solutions such as biofortification, alongside efforts to improve zinc bioavailability. Enhancing dietary zinc content and bioavailability through zinc biofortification is an inclusive nutrition solution that can benefit the most vulnerable individuals and populations affected by inadequate diets to the greatest extent.

Mesoporous Silica Modified with Polydopamine and Zinc Ions as a Potential Carrier in the Controlled Release of Mercaptopurine

Mercaptopurine is one of the drugs used in the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia. A problem with mercaptopurine therapy is its low bioavailability. This problem can be solved by preparing the carrier that releases the drug in lower doses but over a longer period of time. In this work, polydopamine-modified mesoporous silica with adsorbed zinc ions was used as a drug carrier. SEM images confirm the synthesis of spherical carrier particles. The particle size is close to 200 nm, allowing for its use in intravenous delivery. The zeta potential values for the drug carrier indicate that it is not prone to agglomeration. The effectiveness of drug sorption is indicated by a decrease in the zeta potential and new bands in the FT-IR spectra. The drug was released from the carrier for 15 h, so all of the drug can be released during circulation in the bloodstream. The release of the drug from the carrier was sustained, and no 'burst release' was observed. The material also released small amounts of zinc, which are important in the treatment of the disease because these ions can prevent some of the adverse effects of chemotherapy. The results obtained are promising and have great application potential.

The trace that is valuable: serum copper and copper to zinc ratio for survival prediction in younger patients with newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukaemia

PURPOSE

No data on predicting the survival of AML patients based on the level of trace elements in the serum have been presented to date. The aims of this prospective cohort study were as follows: (i) to evaluate the serum Cu and Zn levels in people from Northeast China, (ii) to assess the association between the serum Cu level (SCL) and Cu to Zn ratio (SCZR) and clinical and nutrition data, and (iii) to investigate the predictive values of the SCL and SCZR in newly diagnosed de novo AML patients.

METHODS

A total of 105 newly diagnosed AML patients and 82 healthy controls were recruited. The serum Cu and Zn levels were determined by inductively coupled plasma spectrometry. The associations of SCL and SCZR with the survival of these AML patients were assessed by Cox proportional hazards models.

RESULTS

Both SCL and SCZR were positively related to the blast percentage of bone marrow and C-reactive protein, negatively related to albumin level and CEBPA double mutation and were significantly associated with worse overall survival and disease-free survival. Meanwhile, patients with higher SCL had worse CTCAE levels, and patients with higher SCZR showed less complete remission during the first course of induction chemotherapy. Moreover, higher SCZR was positively associated with ELN risk stratification, and was negatively associated with haemoglobin level and prognostic nutritional index (PNI).

CONCLUSION

The SCL and SCZR are associated with long-term survival in patients with newly diagnosed AML undergoing intensive induction and may serve as important predictive biomarkers.

Zinc Fortification: Current Trends and Strategies

Zinc, through its structural and cofactor roles, affects a broad range of critical physiological functions, including growth, metabolism, immune and neurological functions. Zinc deficiency is widespread among populations around the world, and it may, therefore, underlie much of the global burden of malnutrition. Current zinc fortification strategies include biofortification and fortification with zinc salts with a primary focus on staple foods, such as wheat or rice and their products. However, zinc fortification presents unique challenges. Due to the influences of phytate and protein on zinc absorption, successful zinc fortification strategies should consider the impact on zinc bioavailability in the whole diet. When zinc is absorbed with food, shifts in plasma zinc concentrations are minor. However, co-absorbing zinc with food may preferentially direct zinc to cellular compartments where zinc-dependent metabolic processes primarily occur. Although the current lack of sensitive biomarkers of zinc nutritional status reduces the capacity to assess the impact of fortifying foods with zinc, new approaches for assessing zinc utilization are increasing. In this article, we review the tools available for assessing bioavailable zinc, approaches for evaluating the zinc nutritional status of populations consuming zinc fortified foods, and recent trends in fortification strategies to increase zinc absorption.

Complementary and alternative medicine modalities used to treat adverse effects of anti-cancer treatment among children and young adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Background

Dealing with the symptom burden of cancer diagnosis and treatment has led parents to seek different self-management strategies including Alternative and Complementary Medicine (CAM). The aim of this study was to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis about the use and effect of CAM modalities to treat adverse effects of conventional cancer treatment among children and young adults.

Methods

Six scientific research databases were used to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from 1990 to September 2020. Included studies investigated the use of CAM to treat cancer treatment related adverse effects in children and young adults compared to controls.

Results

Twenty RCTs comprising 1,069 participants were included in this review. The included studies investigated acupuncture, mind–body therapies, supplements, and vitamins for chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV), oral mucositis, and anxiety among children and young adults who underwent conventional cancer treatment. Seven studies (315 participants) were included in the meta-analysis. The overall effect of CAM (including acupuncture and hypnosis only) on chemotherapy-induced nausea and/or vomiting and controls was statistically significant with a standard mean difference of -0.54, 95% CI [-0.77, -0.31] I² = 0% (p < 0.00001). There was a significant difference between acupuncture and controls (n = 5) for intensity and/or episodes of CINV with an SMD -0.59, 95% CI [-0.85, -0.33] (p < 0.00001). No significant difference was found between hypnosis and controls (n = 2) for severity or episodes of CINV with an SMD -0.41, 95% CI [-1.09, 0.27] I² = 41% (p = 0.19).

Conclusion

Current evidence from this meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials shows that CAM, including acupuncture and hypnosis only, is effective in reducing chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting in children and young adults. More rigorous trials and long-term effects should be investigated if acupuncture and hypnosis are to be recommended for clinical use.

Chitosan as possible inhibitory agents and delivery systems in leukemia

Leukemia is a lethal cancer in which white blood cells undergo proliferation and immature white blood cells are seen in the bloodstream. Without diagnosis and management in early stages, this type of cancer can be fatal. Changes in protooncogenic genes and microRNA genes are the most important factors involved in development of leukemia. At present, leukemia risk factors are not accurately identified, but some studies have pointed out factors that predispose to leukemia. Studies show that in the absence of genetic risk factors, leukemia can be prevented by reducing the exposure to risk factors of leukemia, including smoking, exposure to benzene compounds and high-dose radioactive or ionizing radiation. One of the most important treatments for leukemia is chemotherapy which has devastating side effects. Chemotherapy and medications used during treatment do not have a specific effect and destroy healthy cells besides leukemia cells. Despite the suppressing effect of chemotherapy against leukemia, patients undergoing chemotherapy have poor quality of life. So today, researchers are focusing on finding more safe and effective natural compounds and treatments for cancer, especially leukemia. Chitosan is a valuable natural compound that is biocompatible and non-toxic to healthy cells. Anticancer, antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant effects are examples of chitosan biopolymer properties. The US Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of this compound in medical treatments and the pharmaceutical industry. In this article, we take a look at the latest advances in the use of chitosan in the treatment and improvement of leukemia.

Zinc Supplements Taken with Food Increase Essential Fatty Acid Desaturation Indices in Adult Men Compared with Zinc Taken in the Fasted State

BACKGROUND

Zinc intake is associated with reduced risk of metabolic disease in adults, possibly due in part to zinc's role in essential fatty acid (EFA) desaturation. Although plasma zinc is the accepted indicator of zinc status, product-to-precursor activity indices of fatty acid desaturase (FADS) 1 and 2 have also been proposed as response indicators for changes in zinc intake.

OBJECTIVES

To examine zinc supplement effects on plasma zinc concentration (PZC) and estimated FADS 1 and 2 activities, when zinc supplements are taken with food compared with fasted.

METHODS

Apparently healthy adult men were randomly allocated to take 25 mg zinc as zinc gluconate either in the fasted state 30 min before breakfast [zinc before breakfast (ZBB)] or with breakfast [zinc with breakfast (ZWB)] daily for 13 d. Fasting PZC was measured by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Selected EFAs for FADS activity indices were measured by LC-MS/MS at study baseline and end.

RESULTS

A total of 35 men completed the study (ZBB, n = 18; ZWB, n = 17). Mean ± SEM PZC was 86.2 ± 1.64 μg/dL at baseline. After 2 wk of zinc supplementation, the PZCs were 18% higher in the ZBB compared with the ZWB groups (105 ± 5.88 compared with 88.7 ± 2.36 μg/dL, P = < 0.05). However, the geometric mean (95% CI) FADS1 activity indices were 15% higher in the ZWB than the ZBB participants, 6.45 (5.84, 7.13) compared with 5.57 (5.05, 6.14), P < 0.05.

CONCLUSIONS

These data demonstrate a lack of congruence between the effects of zinc supplements on PZC and EFA metabolism in response to whether a zinc supplement is taken with or without food. Additional research is needed to determine how absorbed zinc may be directed differently toward metabolic processes, when coabsorbed with food. This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT03619421.

Zinc deficiency and its association with treatment-related toxicity in children with cancer

BACKGROUND

Nutritional deficiencies in children with cancer at time of diagnosis and during treatment may negatively affect disease outcome and increase treatment-related toxicity. Yet zinc, an essential nutrient important for supporting immune function and known for reducing diarrheal episodes, is rarely assessed in these children.

PROCEDURES

Fifty children (1 month to 18 years) with recently diagnosed cancer were enrolled in this study. An age and gender matched control group (n = 50) was also recruited. Plasma and urinary zinc, plasma copper, and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were measured at baseline, 3, and 6 months following diagnosis. A retrospective review of the toxicity profile was performed in the cohort of children with cancer for the first 4 years after initial diagnosis.

RESULTS

CRP and plasma copper (both acute-phase reactants) were elevated in patients with cancer compared to controls at baseline, both p < .03. Plasma zinc levels were not significantly different from controls at baseline, but decreased by 11% in the cancer group over 6 months of treatment, 83.2 ± 15.6 to 74.3 ± 14.8 μg/dl, p = .01. Plasma zinc dropped to deficient levels in 35% of cases over the initial 6 months. Zinc deficiency at 6 months was related to an increased incidence of severe diarrhea during 4 years of follow-up, p < .001.

CONCLUSIONS

Zinc deficiency is an underrecognized problem among patients undergoing treatment for cancer and is associated with severe diarrhea. Further studies are needed to evaluate causes for zinc deficiency, related effects, and a possible role for zinc supplementation.

Deep insights into urinary tract infections and effective natural remedies

Background

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common occurrence in females, during pregnancy, and in peri- and postmenopausal women. UTIs are associated with significant morbidity and mortality, and they affect the quality of life of the affected patients. Antibiotic therapy is an effective approach and reduces the duration of symptoms. Development of resistance, adverse effects of antibiotics, and other associated problems lead to establishing the research framework to find out the alternative approaches in controlling UTIs. Natural approaches have been extensively used for the management of various diseases to improve symptoms and also improve general health.

Main body

Different databases were employed to identify studies reporting on natural options including herbal medicines, vitamins, trace elementals, sugars, and probiotics without time limitations.

Conclusion

Herbal medicines can be effective at the first sign of the infection and also for short-term prophylaxis. Using vitamins, trace elementals, and/or sugars is an effective approach in preventing UTIs, and a combination of them with other antibacterial agents shows positive results. Probiotics have great potential for the threat of antibiotic over-usage and the prevalence of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms. This study may be of use in developing the efficient formulation of treatment of UTI.

Zinc, ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and vitamin D: An essential combination for prevention and treatment of cancers

Zinc, ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and vitamin D are essential nutrients for health, maturation and general wellbeing. Extensive literature searches have revealed the widespread similarity in molecular biological properties of zinc, ω-3 PUFAs and vitamin D, and their similar anti-cancer properties, even though they have different modes of action. These three nutrients are separately essential for good health, especially in the aged. Zinc, ω-3 PUFAs and vitamin D are inexpensive and safe as they are fundamentally natural and have the properties of correcting and inhibiting undesirable actions without disturbing the normal functions of cells or their extracellular environment. This review of the anticancer properties of zinc, ω-3 PUFAs and vitamin D is made in the context of the hallmarks of cancer. The anticancer properties of zinc, ω-3 PUFAs and vitamin D can therefore be used beneficially through combined treatment or supplementation. It is proposed that sufficiency of zinc, ω-3 PUFAs and vitamin D is a necessary requirement during chemotherapy treatment and that clinical trials can have questionable integrity if this sufficiency is not checked and maintained during efficacy trials.

Safety of dietary supplements use among patients with cancer: A systematic review

Dietary supplements (DS) are commonly taken by patients with cancer, but safety of DS use remains unclear. A systematic literature search was conducted using PubMed, ClinicalTrials.gov, International Pharmaceutical Abstracts and Alt HealthWatch databases from inception through October 12, 2018. Included studies were limited to clinical trials including patients with cancer, DS products as interventions, evaluation of safety endpoints of DS use, and published in English. Sixty-five studies were included to evaluate 20 different DS among patients with 12 types of cancer. Botanical DS (n = 13), vitamins (n = 8), and probiotics/synbiotics (n = 7) were the top 3 types of DS evaluated in these trials. Majority of studied DS appeared safe. Among 19 trials including patients with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, most (n = 18) of studied DS (e.g., vitamins, botanical, omega-3 fatty acid) were found to be safe. Evaluation of DS use and its safety should be regularly incorporated in clinical trials among patients with cancer.

Nutrition of Children With Cancer in Brazil: A Systematic Review

PURPOSE

The objective of this systematic review was to describe nutrition-related publications on children and adolescents diagnosed with cancer in Brazil.

METHODS

The methodology followed that of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. Medline, LILACS (the Latin American & Caribbean Health Sciences Literature), and Embase were searched in April 2019, and data extraction and rating of methodologic study quality (according to the National Institutes of Health quality score assessment) were performed independently by reviewers.

RESULTS

Twenty-seven studies met the inclusion criteria, reporting on 3,509 patients from 1994 to 2018. Most of the studies (74%) were of poor quality in methodology and reporting. Different cancer diagnoses were included in 52% of studies, whereas acute leukemia was the exclusive focus in 41%. The majority of the articles (70%) were from institutions in the Southeast Region of Brazil, mainly the state of São Paulo (74%); no publications were from the North Region of the country. Twelve studies addressed nutritional status and body composition, reporting an abundance of malnourished patients in the Brazilian population of children and adolescents with cancer. Six studies on micronutrients pointed to possible deficiencies in this population, with a yet unclear but promising role for supplementation during treatment.

CONCLUSION

Evidence indicates that there is great interest in the impact of nutrition on childhood cancer treatment and clinical outcomes in Brazil. However, there is a need to focus on high-quality research, particularly with multicentric/national studies. This will help establish research priorities and better planned clinical interventions, adapted to each region of the country.

Oncoxin nutritional supplement in the management of chemotherapy- and/or radiotherapy-associated oral mucositis

Oral mucositis (OM) is a common and potentially dangerous complication of anticancer treatment. Since there are only few therapeutic options for OM, there is a need to identify novel approaches to its management and prevention. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of Oncoxin (ONCX), a nutritional supplement that contains microelements, vitamins, amino acids and certain biologically active substances of natural origin, in cancer patients who receive chemotherapy, radiotherapy or a combination of the two. A total of 15 male and female patients (aged 45-75 years) with malignant neoplasms, who had been prescribed radiotherapy, chemotherapy or a combination of the two, with an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status score ≤3, and grade 2-3 OM based on the World Health Organization (WHO) Oral Toxicity Scale, were enrolled in a 20-day study; 10 patients were in the ONCX group and 5 served as controls. The patients were allowed to use any anticancer treatment and any type of OM care. In addition to their current treatment, patients in the ONCX group used 25 ml of the ONCX nutritional supplement twice daily for 20 days. The mean WHO Oral Toxicity Scale grade decreased by 41% in the ONCX group after ~7 days from the beginning of the study compared with minimal change in the control group. At the end of the study, the difference was even more prominent, with a 73 and 20% decrease from baseline in the ONCX and control groups, respectively (P<0.001). During the entire trial period, patients in the ONCX group were able to eat normally during 65% of the time, in contrast to only 29% in the control group (P=0.04). There were no statistically significant changes in absolute body mass, or in the number of days with normal appetite. This was a pilot study aiming to show the benefits of the ONCX nutritional supplement in OM, and the results demonstrated that ONCX rapidly improved the symptoms of OM and helped to maintain normal eating habits in patients undergoing cancer treatment.

Integrative Medicine in Childhood Cancer

The diagnosis of cancer in a child leaves parents and families devastated and vulnerable. In an effort to do everything possible, families often choose an integrative medicine approach to their child's care. Surveys have found that 31%-84% of children with cancer use complementary and alternative medicine and most often as supportive care agents. Several systematic reviews have demonstrated a clinical benefit for some select therapies; however, the safety and efficacy of the combination of biological therapies with conventional treatment remain largely unknown and garner concern due to the potential for interactions with conventional therapy. Given the sustained use and potential benefit of integrative medicine, additional research is warranted in pediatric oncology. Utilizing the available literature, clinical providers should aim to conduct open and nonjudgmental discussions with families about the use of integrative medicine so as to guide the safe integration of the two modalities.

A systematic review of integrative clinical trials for supportive care in pediatric oncology: a report from the International Society of Pediatric Oncology, T&CM collaborative

PURPOSE

Traditional and complementary medicine (T&CM) use in children with cancer is well established among high-income, upper middle-income, low-middle-income, and low-income countries (HIC, UMIC, LMIC, LIC, respectively). In HIC, a developing body of evidence exists for several T&CM therapies; however, evidence in other income settings is less well described despite a significantly higher use when compared to reports from HIC. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the evidence for T&CM for a variety of supportive care indications among children with cancer.

METHODS

We performed a systematic review following the PRISMA guidelines of randomized, controlled clinical trials from inception through September 2016. Our eligibility criteria were limited to T&CM studies performed in children and adolescents undergoing treatment for a pediatric malignancy.

RESULTS

Of 6342 studies identified, 44 met inclusion criteria. Two clinical trials reported on acupuncture, 1 reported on aromatherapy, 9 evaluated massage therapy, and 32 reported on dietary supplements. Twenty-two studies were performed in HIC, 15 in UMIC, and 7 in LMIC. T&CM therapies were most commonly investigated for the prevention or management of mucositis, weight loss, and febrile neutropenia. Encouraging results were reported for select interventions; however, the majority of studies were classified as poor to fair quality.

CONCLUSION

Our search revealed numerous clinical studies investigating the use of T&CM for supportive care purposes in pediatric oncology in HIC, UMIC, and LMIC. Although limited, these results could inform supportive care resource allocation and indicate where T&CM may serve to fill gaps where access to care may be limited.

Bioelectrical impedance vector analysis for evaluating zinc supplementation in prepubertal and healthy children

BACKGROUND

The prevalence of abnormal nutritional status has increased in children and adolescents. Nutritional assessment is important for monitoring the health and nutritional status. Bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA) combines changes in tissue hydration and structure and body composition that can be assessed.

OBJECTIVES

The objective of this study was to use BIVA to evaluate nutritional status in 60 prepubertal children, aged between 8 and 9 years, supplemented with zinc, to detect possible changes in body composition.

DESIGN

We performed a randomized, controlled, triple-blind study. The children were divided into the control group (CG; sorbitol 10%, n=29) or the experimental group (EG; 10 mg Zn/day, n=31), and the duration of the experiment was 3 months. Anthropometric assessments were performed for all of the children.

RESULTS

The body mass index-for-age increased after oral zinc supplementation in the EG (p=0.005). BIVA indicated that the CG demonstrated a tendency for dehydration and decreased soft tissue and the EG demonstrated a tendency for increased soft tissue, primarily the fat-free mass. After analyses of BIVA ellipses, we observed that this method could detect improvements in body composition in healthy children supplemented with zinc.

CONCLUSIONS

These results suggest that BIVA could be an auxiliary method for studying a small population undergoing zinc intervention.

Divalent cation signaling in immune cells

Divalent cations of two alkaline earth metals Ca(2+) and Mg(2+) and the transition metal Zn(2+) play vital roles in the immune system, and several immune disorders are associated with disturbances of their function. Until recently only Ca(2+) was considered to serve as a second messenger. However, signaling roles for Mg(2+) and Zn(2+) have been recently described, leading to a reevaluation of their role as potential second messengers. We review here the roles of these cations as second messengers in light of recent advances in Ca(2+), Mg(2+), and Zn(2+) signaling in the immune system. Developing a better understanding of these signaling cations may lead to new therapeutic strategies for immune disorders.
