A Functional "Key" Amplified Piezoelectric Effect Modulates ROS Storm with an Open Source for Multimodal Synergistic Cancer Therapy

Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) is a non-invasive strategy for generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) and is promising for cancer treatment. However, increasing ROS in tumor therapy remains challenging. Therefore, exogenous excitation and inhibition of electron-hole pair recombination are attractive for modulating ROS storms in tumors. Herein, a Ce-doped BiFeO3 (CBFO) piezoelectric sonosensitizer to modulate ROS generation and realize a synergistic mechanism of CDT/sonodynamic therapy and piezodynamic therapy (PzDT) is proposed. The mixed Fe2+ and Ce3+ can implement a circular Fenton/Fenton-like reaction in the tumor microenvironment. Abundant ·OH can be generated by ultrasound (US) stimulation to enhance CDT efficacy. As a typical piezoelectric sonosensitizer, CBFO can produce O2 - owing to the enhanced polarization by the US, resulting in the motion of charge carriers. In addition, CBFO can produce a piezoresponse irradiated upon US, which accelerates the migration rate of electrons/holes in opposite directions and results in energy band bending, further achieving toxic ROS production and realizing PzDT. Density functional theory calculations confirmed that Ce doping shortens the diffusion of electrons and improves the conductivity and catalytic activity of CBFO. This distinct US-enhanced strategy emphasizes the effects of doping engineering and piezoelectric-optimized therapy and shows great potential for the treatment of malignant tumors.

Ultrasound-Assisted Preparation and Performance Regulation of Electrocatalytic Materials

With the advancement of scientific research, the introduction of external physical methods not only adds extra freedom to the design of electro-catalytical processes for green technologies but also effectively improves the reactivity of materials. Physical methods can adjust the intrinsic activity of materials and modulate the local environment at the solid-liquid interface. In particular, this approach holds great promise in the field of electrocatalysis. Among them, the ultrasonic waves have shown reasonable control over the preparation of materials and the electrocatalytic process. However, the research on coupling ultrasonic waves and electrocatalysis is still early. The understanding of their mechanisms needs to be more comprehensive and deep enough. Firstly, this article extensively discusses the adhibition of the ultrasonic-assisted preparation of metal-based catalysts and their catalytic performance as electrocatalysts. The obtained metal-based catalysts exhibit improved electrocatalytic performances due to their high surface area and more exposed active sites. Additionally, this article also points out some urgent unresolved issues in the synthesis of materials using ultrasonic waves and the regulation of electrocatalytic performance. Lastly, the challenges and opportunities in this field are discussed, providing new insights for improving the catalytic performance of transition metal-based electrocatalysts.

A Review of Ultrasonic Treatment in Mineral Flotation: Mechanism and Recent Development

Ultrasonic treatment has been widely used in the mineral flotation process due to its advantages in terms of operational simplicity, no secondary pollutant formation, and safety. Currently, many studies have reported the effect of ultrasonic treatment on mineral flotation and shown excellent flotation performance. In this review, the ultrasonic mechanisms are classified into three types: the transient cavitation effect, stable cavitation effect, and acoustic radiation force effect. The effect of the main ultrasonic parameters, including ultrasonic power and ultrasonic frequency, on mineral flotation are discussed. This review highlights the uses of the application of ultrasonic treatment in minerals (such as the cleaning effect, ultrasonic corrosion, and desulfuration), flotation agents (such as dispersion and emulsification and change in properties and microstructure of pharmaceutical solution), and slurry (such formation of microbubbles and coalescence). Additionally, this review discusses the challenges and prospects of using ultrasonic approaches for mineral flotation. The findings demonstrate that the application of the ultrasonic effect yields diverse impacts on flotation, thereby enabling the regulation of flotation behavior through various treatment methods to enhance flotation indices and achieve the desired objectives.

Recent Progress of Solid-Liquid Interface-Mediated Contact-Electro-Catalysis

Contact electrification (CE) is a common physical process by which triboelectric charges are generated through the mutual contact between two objects. Despite the ongoing debates on CE's mechanism, recent advancements in technology have elucidated the primary role of electron transfer in most CE processes. This discovery leads to the spawning of an emerging field, known as contact-electro-catalysis (CEC), which utilizes the electron transfer phenomenon during CE to initiate CEC. In this work, we provide the first comprehensive review of the recent progress of the solid-liquid interface-mediated CEC process, including its working principles, relationship with surface science, recent breakthroughs in applications, and future challenges. We aim to provide fundamental guidance for researchers to understand the reaction mechanism of the CEC process and to propose potential pathways to enhance CEC efficiency from a surface and interfacial science perspective. Later, recent application scenarios using the novel CEC techniques are summarized, including wastewater treatment, efficient generation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), lithium-ion battery recycling, and CO2 reduction. In general, CEC technology has opened a new avenue for catalysis, effectively expanding the range of catalyst options and holding promise as a solution to a variety of complex catalytic challenges in the future.

Single-Bubble Sonoluminescence of Colloidal Suspensions of Europium(II) Salt Nanoparticles

Colloidal suspensions of EuCl2, EuBr2, and EuSO4 nanoparticles (<50 nm) in dodecane and EuSO4 in 70% H2SO4 were synthesized. Moving single-bubble sonoluminescence (m-SBSL) spectra were obtained for a bubble performing radial oscillations in these suspensions and translational motions at the antinode of a standing ultrasonic wave with a frequency of about 27 kHz. In these spectra (at a spectral resolution of 10 nm), the sono-excited luminescence bands of the Eu2+ ion were detected for the first time, coinciding in the shape and position of the maxima (404, 413, and 377 nm for EuCl2, EuBr2, and EuSO4, respectively) with the bands of Eu2+ located in a crystalline environment in the photoluminescence spectra of nanoparticles of europium salts in suspensions. The detected sonoluminescence of Eu2+ arises due to the injection of nanoparticles into a bubble deformed during motion and excitation of a lanthanide ion at the periphery of the bubble volume during collisions of nanoparticles with charged particles, mainly electrons, coming from a hot nonequilibrium plasma, which periodically arises during bubble compression. Evidence for the excitation of the europium ion in the bubble is the absence of its luminescence bands in the SBSL spectra of the translationally immobile bubble, in which nanoparticles are unlikely to enter. The nanoparticles that enter the bubble also undergo decomposition in the plasma into fragments, in particular, with the formation of Eu, Eu+ in the excited state. The atomic lines of these fragments were recorded for the first time in the m-SBSL spectrum with a resolution of 1 nm for a suspension of EuSO4 nanoparticles in 70% H2SO4. The resulting m-SBSL spectra will add to the library of characteristic spectra of objects of sonoluminescent spectroscopic analysis and will make it possible to identify and determine the content of Eu or Eu2+ in these objects.

Mechanisms underlying the influence of skin properties on a single cavitation bubble in low-frequency sonophoresis

As a safe and effective method for systemic transdermal drug delivery (TDD), sonophoresis has drawn much attention from researchers. Despite numerous studies confirming cavitation as the main reason for sonophoresis, the effect skin has on cavitation bubble dynamics remains elusive due to the difficulty of experimental challenges. For a start, we reveal how single cavitation bubble (SCB) dynamics are affected by skin properties, including elasticity, hydrophilicity and texture. We use polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to simulate human skin and record the temporary evolution of SCBs with synchronous ultrafast photography. The influences of skin properties on SCBs are concluded: 1) SCBs collapse later near walls with better elasticities and generate microjets with higher speed; 2) SCBs collapse later near hydrophilic walls with slower microjets; and 3) the existence of a texture structure on walls also delays the time of bubble collapse near them and slows the velocities of microjets (v) during collapses.

Ultrasonication for honey processing and preservation: A brief overview

Honey is a food product consumed all over the world. Besides its nutritional properties, honey presents antibacterial, antioxidant, and wound-healing properties. To ensure that the final product meets qualitative and microbiological standards, honey treatment is of great importance. Conventional honey treatment is based on the heating of honey samples for decrystallization and bacteria and yeast inactivation. However, conventional heating can cause negative effects on honey quality, such as the formation of toxic compounds, reduction of enzyme activity, and loss of antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. The application of ultrasonic waves has demonstrated interesting effects on honey processing. Ultrasound (US) treatment can lead to the fragmentation of glucose crystals in crystalized honey and has little effect on its properties. In addition to inactivating microorganisms, US-assisted honey processing also preserves phenolic compounds content and antimicrobial properties. However, there is still limited information about honey sonication. The aim of the present review is to comprehensively show the possibilities of US application in honey processing and its effects on honey properties.

Sonosensitive Cavitation Nuclei-A Customisable Platform Technology for Enhanced Therapeutic Delivery

Ultrasound-mediated cavitation shows great promise for improving targeted drug delivery across a range of clinical applications. Cavitation nuclei-sound-sensitive constructs that enhance cavitation activity at lower pressures-have become a powerful adjuvant to ultrasound-based treatments, and more recently emerged as a drug delivery vehicle in their own right. The unique combination of physical, biological, and chemical effects that occur around these structures, as well as their varied compositions and morphologies, make cavitation nuclei an attractive platform for creating delivery systems tuned to particular therapeutics. In this review, we describe the structure and function of cavitation nuclei, approaches to their functionalization and customization, various clinical applications, progress toward real-world translation, and future directions for the field.

Recent Developments of Inorganic Nanosensitizers for Sonodynamic Therapy

As a noninvasive treatment, sonodynamic therapy (SDT) has been widely used in the treatment of tumors because of its ability to penetrate deep tissue with few side effects. As the key factor of SDT, it is meaningful to design and synthesize efficient sonosensitizers. Compared with organic sonosensitizers, inorganic sonosensitizers can be easily excited by ultrasound. In addition, inorganic sonosensitizers with stable properties, good dispersion, and long blood circulation time, have great development potential in SDT. This review summarizes possible mechanisms of SDT (sonoexcitation and ultrasonic cavitation) in detail. Based on these mechanisms, the design and synthesis of inorganic nanosonosensitizers can be divided into three categories: traditional inorganic semiconductor sonosensitizers, enhanced inorganic semiconductor sonosensitizers, and cavitation-enhanced sonosensitizers. Subsequently, the current efficient construction methods of sonosensitizers are summarized including accelerated semiconductor charge separation and enhanced production of reactive oxygen species through ultrasonic cavitation. Furthermore, the advantages and disadvantages of different inorganic sonosensitizers and detailed strategies are systematically discussed on how to enhance SDT. Hopefully, this review could provide new insights into the design and synthesis of efficient inorganic nano-sonosensitizers for SDT.

Advanced oxidation processes for the removal of phthalate esters (PAEs) in aqueous matrices: a review

Over the past few decades, phthalate esters (PAEs) used as additives to improve the persistence and flexibility of polymeric materials. They are also used in cosmetics, insect repellents, and propellants, and their continuous input into drinking waters has constituted a serious risk to human health and the environment. DBPs are compounds classified as hazardous substances and have teratogenic properties. Due to the high bioaccumulation of DBP, they have toxic properties in different organisms, making it very important to remove PAEs before discharging them into environments. In this study a systematic review was designed to evaluate Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) studies which have successfully treated contaminated water with PAEs. Among AOPs, particularly photocatalytic, UV/H₂O₂ photolysis, sonolysis, and ozone-based processes were more tried to degrade PAEs in aqueous solutions. Additionally, a more detail of each AOPs was explained. Findings showed that all advanced oxidation processes, especially combined AOPs have good results in the degradation of PAEs in water.

Sonochemistry of Liquid-Metal Galinstan toward the Synthesis of Two-Dimensional and Multilayered Gallium-Based Metal-Oxide Photonic Semiconductors

The scientific field of two-dimensional (2D) nanostructures has witnessed tremendous development during the last decade. To date, different synthesis approaches have been developed; therefore, various exceptional properties of this family of advanced materials have been discovered. It has recently been found that the natural surface oxide films of room-temperature liquid metals is an emerging platform for the synthesis of novel types of 2D nanostructures with numerous functional applications. However, most of the developed synthesis techniques for these materials are based on the direct mechanical exfoliation of 2D materials as research targets. This paper reports a facile and functional sonochemical-assisted approach for the synthesis of 2D hybrid and complex multilayered nanostructures with tunable characteristics. In this method, the intense interaction of acoustic waves with microfluidic gallium-based room-temperature liquid galinstan alloy provides the activation energy for synthesis of hybrid 2D nanostructures. The microstructural characterizations reveal the impact of sonochemical synthesis parameters, including the processing time and composition of the ionic synthesis environment, on the growth of Ga_xO_y/Se 2D hybrid structures and InGa_xO_y/Se multilayered crystalline structures with tunable photonic characteristics. This technique shows promising potential for synthesis of various types of 2D and layered semiconductor nanostructures with tunable photonic characteristics.

Effect of pulse parameters on ablation efficiency in dual-frequency HIFU therapy

High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) has now been widely used to ablate various benign and malignant tumors. But it is still critical to increase the ablation efficiency in many clinical applications. Dual-frequency HIFU has been proven to be more efficient in ablation, but the principle on selecting the pulse parameters in this method remains to be explored. In this study, the in vitro lesion areas under different pulse repetition frequencies (PRFs), duty ratios, and frequency differences were compared, cavitation activity was also monitored during HIFU exposure. The results showed that different pulse parameters caused different types of lesions. In HIFU therapy, those pulse parameters that maximize the thermal effect, reduce heat dissipation and generate sufficient cavitation activities should be considered. But the method of evaluating or predicting the damage by using the cavitation dose is only applicable to mechanical damage.

The Reducing Agents in Sonochemical Reactions without Any Additives

It has been experimentally reported that not only oxidation reactions but also reduction reactions occur in aqueous solutions under ultrasound without any additives. According to the numerical simulations of chemical reactions inside an air or argon bubble in water without any additives under ultrasound, reducing agents produced from the bubbles are H, H2, HO2 (which becomes superoxide anion (O2-) in liquid water), NO, and HNO2 (which becomes NO2- in liquid water). In addition, H2O2 sometimes works as a reducing agent. As the reduction potentials of H and H2 (in strongly alkaline solutions for H2) are higher than those of RCHOH radicals, which are usually used to reduce metal ions, H and H2 generated from cavitation bubbles are expected to reduce metal ions to produce metal nanoparticles (in strongly alkaline solutions for H2 to work). It is possible that the superoxide anion (O2-) also plays some role in the sonochemical reduction of some solutes. In strongly alkaline solutions, hydrated electrons (e-aq) formed from H atoms in liquid water may play an important role in the sonochemical reduction of solutes because the reduction potential is extremely high. The influence of ultrasonic frequency on the amount of H atoms produced from a cavitation bubble is also discussed.

Plasmonic Nanodomains Decorated on Two-Dimensional Oxide Semiconductors for Photonic-Assisted CO2 Conversion

Plasmonic nanostructures ensure the reception and harvesting of visible lights for novel photonic applications. In this area, plasmonic crystalline nanodomains decorated on the surface of two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor materials represent a new class of hybrid nanostructures. These plasmonic nanodomains activate supplementary mechanisms at material heterointerfaces, enabling the transfer of photogenerated charge carriers from plasmonic antennae into adjacent 2D semiconductors and therefore activate a wide range of visible-light assisted applications. Here, the controlled growth of crystalline plasmonic nanodomains on 2D Ga₂O₃ nanosheets was achieved by sonochemical-assisted synthesis. In this technique, Ag and Se nanodomains grew on 2D surface oxide films of gallium-based alloy. The multiple contribution of plasmonic nanodomains enabled the visible-light-assisted hot-electron generation at 2D plasmonic hybrid interfaces, and therefore considerably altered the photonic properties of the 2D Ga₂O₃ nanosheets. Specifically, the multiple contribution of semiconductor-plasmonic hybrid 2D heterointerfaces enabled efficient CO₂ conversion through combined photocatalysis and triboelectric-activated catalysis. The solar-powered acoustic-activated conversion approach of the present study enabled us to achieve the CO₂ conversion efficiency of more than 94% in the reaction chambers containing 2D Ga₂O₃-Ag nanosheets.

Sonoluminescence intensity and ultrasonic cavitation temperature in organic solvents: Effects of generated radicals

Ultrasonic cavitation in organic solvents remains poorly understood in contrast with aqueous systems, largely because of complexities related to solvent decomposition. In this study, we sonicated different types of organic solvents (i.e. linear alkanes, aliphatic alcohols, aromatic alcohols, and acetate esters) under argon saturation. The average temperature of the cavitation bubbles was estimated using the methyl radical recombination method. We also discuss the effects of the physical properties of the solvents, such as vapor pressure and viscosity, on the cavitation temperature. The average cavitation bubble temperature and sonoluminescence intensity were higher in organic solvents with lower vapor pressure; for aromatic alcohols, these values were particularly high. It was found that the specific high sonoluminescence intensities and average cavitation temperatures exhibited in aromatic alcohols are caused by the highly resonance-stable generated radicals. The results obtained in this study are very useful for acceleration of sonochemical reaction in organic solvents, which are indispensable for organic synthesis and material synthesis.

Probing the pressure dependence of sound speed and attenuation in bubbly media: Experimental observations, a theoretical model and numerical calculations

The problem of attenuation and sound speed of bubbly media has remained partially unsolved. Comprehensive data regarding pressure-dependent changes of the attenuation and sound speed of a bubbly medium are not available. Our theoretical understanding of the problem is limited to linear or semi-linear theoretical models, which are not accurate in the regime of large amplitude bubble oscillations. Here, by controlling the size of the lipid coated bubbles (mean diameter of ≈5.4μm), we report the first time observation and characterization of the simultaneous pressure dependence of sound speed and attenuation in bubbly water below, at and above microbubbles resonance (frequency range between 1-3 MHz). With increasing acoustic pressure (between 12.5-100 kPa), the frequency of the peak attenuation and sound speed decreases while maximum and minimum amplitudes of the sound speed increase. We propose a nonlinear model for the estimation of the pressure dependent sound speed and attenuation with good agreement with the experiments. The model calculations are validated by comparing with the linear and semi-linear models predictions. One of the major challenges of the previously developed models is the significant overestimation of the attenuation at the bubble resonance at higher void fractions (e.g. 0.005). We addressed this problem by incorporating bubble-bubble interactions and comparing the results to experiments. Influence of the bubble-bubble interactions increases with increasing pressure. Within the examined exposure parameters, we numerically show that, even for low void fractions (e.g. 5.1×10-6) with increasing pressure the sound speed may become 4 times higher than the sound speed in the non-bubbly medium.

Oxygen Vacancies in Piezoelectric ZnO Twin-Mesocrystal to Improve Peroxymonosulfate Utilization Efficiency via Piezo-Activation for Antibiotic Ornidazole Removal

Piezoelectric mesocrystals as defective materials have been demonstrated to possess adsorptive and catalytic properties in redox reactions. However, there is still a lack of research on the quantitative relationship between the defect concentration and the piezocatalytic performance in piezoelectric mesocrystals. Herein, twin-hierarchical structure ZnO piezoelectric mesocrystals are taken with different oxygen-vacancies (OVs) concentrations to quantitatively investigate the effect of defect content on the peroxymonosulfate (PMS) piezo-activation in water purification. The ZnO piezoelectric mesocrystal with moderate OVs concentration exhibits a rapid antibiotic ornidazole (ORZ) pollutants degradation rate (0.034 min^-1 ) and achieves a high PMS utilization efficiency (0.162) that exceeds the most state-of-the-art catalytic processes, while excessive OVs suppressed the piezocatalytic performance. Through calculations of electron property and reactants affinity, a quantitative relationship between OVs concentration and piezocatalytic properties is established. The ZnO mesocrystal with moderate OVs concentration realized increased electron delocalization, reduced charge transfer barrier, and enhanced reactants affinity, thus accelerating the kinetics of PMS activation. This work provides theoretical guidance for the application of defect engineering in mesocrystal to realize enhanced piezocatalytic performance.

A high-temperature acoustic field measurement and analysis system for determining cavitation intensity in ultrasonically solidified metallic alloys

A high-temperature acoustic field measurement and analysis system (HTAFS) was self-designed and developed to achieve real-time acoustic field analysis and quantitative cavitation characterization within high-temperature liquids. The acoustic signal was acquired by a high-temperature resistant waveguide and calibrated by separate compensation of line and continuous spectra to eliminate frequency offsets. Moreover, a new method was proposed to derive from the continuous-spectrum sound intensity and line-spectrum sound intensity in the frequency band above 1.5 times the fundamental frequency to characterize the intensity of transient cavitation and stable cavitation. The acoustic field characteristics within solidifying liquid Al-7 %Si alloy were successfully determined by this system. With the increase of ultrasound amplitude, the acoustic pressure in the alloy melt increased to be stable, the transient cavitation intensity first rose and then declined, and the stable cavitation intensity remained unchanged. Combined with the structural evolution of the primary α(Al) phase, the transient cavitation intensity was determined to be the dominant factor for the ultrasound-induced grain refinement effect.

Nanoparticles with ultrasound-induced afterglow luminescence for tumour-specific theranostics

Molecular imaging via afterglow luminescence minimizes tissue autofluorescence and increases the signal-to-noise ratio. However, the induction of afterglow requires the prior irradiation of light, which is attenuated by scattering and absorption in tissue. Here we report the development of organic nanoparticles producing ultrasound-induced afterglow, and their proof-of-concept application in cancer immunotheranostics. The 'sonoafterglow' nanoparticles comprise a sonosensitizer acting as an initiator to produce singlet oxygen and subsequently activate a substrate for the emission of afterglow luminescence, which is brighter and detectable at larger tissue depths (4 cm) than previously reported light-induced afterglow. We formulated sonoafterglow nanoparticles containing a singlet-oxygen-cleavable prodrug for the immune-response modifier imiquimod that specifically turn on in the presence of the inflammation biomarker peroxynitrite, which is overproduced by tumour-associated M1-like macrophages. Systemic delivery of the nanoparticles allowed for sonoafterglow-guided treatment of mice bearing subcutaneous breast cancer tumours. The high sensitivity and depth of molecular sonoafterglow imaging may offer advantages for the real-time in vivo monitoring of physiopathological processes.

Single-pulse real-time billion-frames-per-second planar imaging of ultrafast nanoparticle-laser dynamics and temperature in flames

Unburnt hydrocarbon flames produce soot, which is the second biggest contributor to global warming and harmful to human health. The state-of-the-art high-speed imaging techniques, developed to study non-repeatable turbulent flames, are limited to million-frames-per-second imaging rates, falling short in capturing the dynamics of critical species. Unfortunately, these techniques do not provide a complete picture of flame-laser interactions, important for understanding soot formation. Furthermore, thermal effects induced by multiple consecutive pulses modify the optical properties of soot nanoparticles, thus making single-pulse imaging essential. Here, we report single-shot laser-sheet compressed ultrafast photography (LS-CUP) for billion-frames-per-second planar imaging of flame-laser dynamics. We observed laser-induced incandescence, elastic light scattering, and fluorescence of soot precursors - polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in real-time using a single nanosecond laser pulse. The spatiotemporal maps of the PAHs emission, soot temperature, primary nanoparticle size, soot aggregate size, and the number of monomers, present strong experimental evidence in support of the theory and modeling of soot inception and growth mechanism in flames. LS-CUP represents a generic and indispensable tool that combines a portfolio of ultrafast combustion diagnostic techniques, covering the entire lifecycle of soot nanoparticles, for probing extremely short-lived (picoseconds to nanoseconds) species in the spatiotemporal domain in non-repeatable turbulent environments. Finally, LS-CUP's unparalleled capability of ultrafast wide-field temperature imaging in real-time is envisioned to unravel mysteries in modern physics such as hot plasma, sonoluminescence, and nuclear fusion.

A Novel Method Based on Hydrodynamic Cavitation for Improving Nitric Oxide Removal Performance of NaClO2

In the removal of nitric oxide (NO) by sodium chlorite (NaClO2), the NaClO2 concentration is usually increased, and an alkaline absorbent is added to improve the NO removal efficiency. However, this increases the cost of denitrification. This study is the first to use hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) combined with NaClO2 for wet denitrification. Under optimal experimental conditions, when 3.0 L of NaClO2 with a concentration of 1.00 mmol/L was used to treat NO (concentration: 1000 ppmv and flow rate: 1.0 L/min), 100% of nitrogen oxides (NOx) could be removed in 8.22 min. Furthermore, the NO removal efficiency remained at 100% over the next 6.92 min. Furthermore, the formation of ClO2 by NaClO2 is affected by pH. The initial NOx removal efficiency was 84.8-54.8% for initial pH = 4.00-7.00. The initial NOx removal efficiency increases as the initial pH decreases. When the initial pH was 3.50, the initial NOx removal efficiency reached 100% under the synergistic effect of HC. Therefore, this method enhances the oxidation capacity of NaClO2 through HC, realizes high-efficiency denitrification with low NaClO2 concentration (1.00 mmol/L), and has better practicability for the treatment of NOx from ships.

Piezocatalytic Techniques in Environmental Remediation

As a consequence of rapid industrialization throughout the world, various environmental pollutants have begun to accumulate in water, air, and soil. This endangers the ecological environment of the earth, and environmental remediation has become an immediate priority. Among various environmental remediation techniques, piezocatalytic techniques, which uniquely take advantage of the piezoelectric effect, have attracted much attention. Piezoelectric effects allow pollutant degradation directly, while also enhancing photocatalysis by reducing the recombination of photogenerated carriers. In this Review, we provide a comprehensive summary of recent developments in piezocatalytic techniques for environmental remediation. The origin of the piezoelectric effect as well as classification of piezoelectric materials and their application in environmental remediation are systematically summarized. We also analyze the potential underlying mechanisms. Finally, urgent problems and the future development of piezocatalytic techniques are discussed.

Transition mechanisms of translational motions of bubbles in an ultrasonic field

The translation behaviors of oscillating bubbles are closely related to the polymerizations and dispersions between them, which are crucial for the ultrasonic cavitation effect. In this study, six types of translational motion of bubbles with a wide range of sizes (2-100 μm) in the R₀₁-R₀₂ plane are investigated. Our results demonstrate that in addition (to the 2nd order harmonic), the 1/2 order subharmonic can change the bubble pairs from the three states of the attraction, stable after attraction, and repulsion to that of the repulsion, coalescence, and attraction, respectively. Furthermore, within the range of the main resonance radius and the 1/2 order subharmonic resonance radius, the chaotic bubble pairs with alternating attractive and repulsive forces appear in the region between the coalescence pairs and stable pairs after attraction. Finally, the corresponding physical mechanisms of the chaotic translational motions are also revealed.

Highly Efficient Flexocatalysis of Two-Dimensional Semiconductors

Catalysis is vitally important for chemical engineering, energy, and environment. It is critical to discover new mechanisms for efficient catalysis. For piezoelectric/pyroelectric/ferroelectric materials that have a non-centrosymmetric structure, interfacial polarization-induced redox reactions at surfaces leads to advanced mechanocatalysis. Here, the first flexocatalysis for 2D centrosymmetric semiconductors, such as MnO₂  nanosheets, is demonstrated largely expanding the polarization-based-mechanocatalysis to 2D centrosymmetric materials. Under ultrasonic excitation, the reactive species are created due to the strain-gradient-induced flexoelectric polarization in MnO₂  nanosheets composed nanoflowers. The organic pollutants (Methylene Blue et al.) can be effectively degraded within 5 min; the performance of the flexocatalysis is comparable to that of state-of-the-art piezocatalysis, with excellent stability and reproducibility. Moreover, the factors related to flexocatalysis such as material morphology, adsorption, mechanical vibration intensity, and temperature are explored, which give deep insights into the mechanocatalysis. This study opens the field of flexoelectric effect-based mechanochemistry in 2D centrosymmetric semiconductors.

Cavitation erosion by shockwave self-focusing of a single bubble

The ability of cavitation bubbles to effectively focus energy is made responsible for cavitation erosion, traumatic brain injury, and even for catalyse chemical reactions. Yet, the mechanism through which material is eroded remains vague, and the extremely fast and localized dynamics that lead to material damage has not been resolved. Here, we reveal the decisive mechanism that leads to energy focusing during the non-spherical collapse of cavitation bubbles and eventually results to the erosion of hardened metals. We show that a single cavitation bubble at ambient pressure close to a metal surface causes erosion only if a non-axisymmetric energy self-focusing is at play. The bubble during its collapse emits shockwaves that under certain conditions converge to a single point where the remaining gas phase is driven to a shockwave-intensified collapse. We resolve the conditions under which this self-focusing enhances the collapse and damages the solid. High-speed imaging of bubble and shock wave dynamics at sub-picosecond exposure times is correlated to the shockwaves recorded with large bandwidth hydrophones. The material damage from several metallic materials is detected in situ and quantified ex-situ via scanning electron microscopy and confocal profilometry. With this knowledge, approaches to mitigate cavitation erosion or to even enhance the energy focusing are within reach.

Comparison of frequency domain and time domain methods for the numerical simulation of contactless ultrasonic cavitation

The use of a top-mounted electromagnetic induction coil has been demonstrated as a contactless alternative to traditional ultrasonic treatment (UST) techniques that use an immersed mechanical sonotrode for the treatment of metals in the liquid state. This method offers similar benefits to existing UST approaches, including degassing, grain refinement, and dispersion of nanoparticles, while also preventing contact contamination due to erosion of the sonotrode. Contactless treatment potentially extends UST to high temperature or reactive melts. Generally, the method relies on acoustic resonance to reach pressure levels suitable for inertial cavitation and as a result the active cavitation volume tends to lie deep in the melt rather than in the small volume surrounding the immersed sonotrode probe. Consequently, (i) with suitable tuning of the coil supply frequency for resonance, the treatment volume can be made arbitrarily large, (ii) the problem of shielding and pressure wave attenuation suffered by the immersed sonotrode is avoided. However, relying on acoustic resonance presents problems: (i) the emergence of bubbles alters the speed of sound, resonance is momentarily lost, and cavitation becomes intermittent, (ii) as sound waves travel through and reflect on all the materials surrounding the melt, the sound characteristics of the crucible and supporting structures need to be carefully considered. The physics of cavitation coupled with this intermittent behaviour poses a challenge to sonotrode modelling orthodoxy, a problem we are trying to address in this publication. Two alternative approaches will be discussed, one of which is in the time domain and one in the frequency domain, which couple the solution of a bubble dynamics solver with that of an acoustics solver, to give an accurate prediction of the acoustic pressure generated by the induction coil. The time domain solver uses a novel algorithm to improve simulation time, by detecting an imminent bubble collapse and prescribing its subsequent behaviour, rather than directly solving a region that would normally require extremely small time steps. This way, it is shown to predict intermittent cavitation. The frequency domain solver for the first time couples the nonlinear Helmholtz model used for studying cavitation, with a background source term for the contribution of Lorentz forces. It predicts comparable RMS pressures to the time domain solver, but not the intermittent behaviour due to the underlying harmonic assumption. As further validation, the frequency domain method is also used to compare the generated acoustic pressure with that of traditional UST using a mechanical sonotrode.

Cavitation in a soft porous material

We study the collapse and expansion of a cavitation bubble in a deformable porous medium. We develop a continuum-scale model that couples compressible fluid flow in the pore network with the elastic response of a solid skeleton. Under the assumption of spherical symmetry, our model can be reduced to an ordinary differential equation that extends the Rayleigh-Plesset equation to bubbles in soft porous media. The extended Rayleigh-Plesset equation reveals that finite-size effects lead to the breakdown of the universal scaling relation between bubble radius and time that holds in the infinite-size limit. Our data indicate that the deformability of the porous medium slows down the collapse and expansion processes, a result with important consequences for wide-ranging phenomena, from drug delivery to spore dispersion.

Sonication Impacts and Sonolytic Pathways for Some Organic Solvents Used in Pharmaceutical Analyses

In pharmaceutical residual solvents analyses, some organic solvents are generally used as sample diluents (or sample solvents) (1–4). Interferences from sample diluents should be monitored in method development and routine use. Gas chromatography (GC) is the technique that is widely used for testing gaseous or volatile substances.

On Some Aspects of Nanobubble-Containing Systems

Theoretical studies are reviewed for bulk nanobubbles (ultrafine bubbles (UFBs)), which are gas bubbles smaller than 1 μm in diameter. The dynamic equilibrium model is discussed as a promising model for the stability of a UFB against dissolution; more than half of the surface of a UFB should be covered with hydrophobic material (impurity). OH radicals are produced during hydrodynamic or acoustic cavitation to produce UFBs. After stopping cavitation, OH radicals are generated through chemical reactions of H2O2 and O3 in the liquid water. The possibility of radical generation during the bubble dissolution is also discussed based on numerical simulations. UFBs are concentrated on the liquid surface according to the dynamic equilibrium model. As a result, rupture of liquid film is accelerated by the presence of UFBs, which results in a reduction in “surface tension”, measured by the du Noüy ring method. Finally, the interaction of UFBs with a solid surface is discussed.

Fundamentals, biomedical applications and future potential of micro-scale cavitation-a review

Thanks to the developments in the area of microfluidics, the cavitation-on-a-chip concept enabled researchers to control and closely monitor the cavitation phenomenon in micro-scale. In contrast to conventional scale, where cavitation bubbles are hard to be steered and manipulated, lab-on-a-chip devices provide suitable platforms to conduct smart experiments and design reliable devices to carefully harness the collapse energy of cavitation bubbles in different bio-related and industrial applications. However, bubble behavior deviates to some extent when confined to micro-scale geometries in comparison to macro-scale. Therefore, fundamentals of micro-scale cavitation deserve in-depth investigations. In this review, first we discussed the physics and fundamentals of cavitation induced by tension-based as well as energy deposition-based methods within microfluidic devices and discussed the similarities and differences in micro and macro-scale cavitation. We then covered and discussed recent developments in bio-related applications of micro-scale cavitation chips. Lastly, current challenges and future research directions towards the implementation of micro-scale cavitation phenomenon to emerging applications are presented.

A correlation between cavitation bubble temperature, sonoluminescence and interfacial chemistry - A minireview

Ultrasound induced cavitation (acoustic cavitation) process is found useful in various applications. Scientists from various disciplines have been exploring the fundamental aspects of acoustic cavitation processes over several decades. It is well documented that extreme localised temperature and pressure conditions are generated when a cavitation bubble collapses. Several experimental techniques have also been developed to estimate cavitation bubble temperatures. Depending upon specific experimental conditions, light emission from cavitation bubbles is observed, referred to as sonoluminescence. Sonoluminescence studies have been used to develop a fundamental understanding of cavitation processes in single and multibubble systems. This minireview aims to provide some highlights on the development of basic understandings of acoustic cavitation processes using cavitation bubble temperature, sonoluminescence and interfacial chemistry over the past 2-3 decades.

Experimental Investigation on the Characteristic of Hydrodynamic-Acoustic Cavitation (HAC)

This study aimed to investigate the Cavitation dynamics of Hydrodynamic-acoustic cavitation by employing experimental methods. The spatial distribution of cavitation clouds, the temporal and spatial distribution achieved by cavitation clouds, and the main flow structure in the flow field were extracted and analyzed by complying with the cavitating flow image captured with the high-speed camera. As indicated from the results, the widened cavitation region and the strength of cavitation under the synergy of ultrasound were reported. When the inlet pressure is 2 MPa, the average value of the volume-averaging cavitation intensity variable is 0.029, 0.058, and 0.092, respectively, and the corresponding growth rate is 95% and 58.5%. By adopting the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition method (POD), the ultrasound was revealed to primarily enhance the cavitation intensity by downregulating the cavitation threshold other than altering the large-scale vortex structure in the flow field. The high-frequency pressure pulsation of ultrasound strengthened the instability exhibited by the shear layer and induced small-scale vortex structures at the shear layer, which was suggested to be the more violently shed and collapse.

Simultaneous H/D and 13C/12C Anomalous Kinetic Isotope Effects during the Sonolysis of Water in the Presence of Carbon Monoxide

Splitting of water molecules driven by ultrasound plays a central role in sonochemistry. While studies of sonoluminescence revealed the formation of a plasma inside the cavitation bubble, much less is known about the contribution of plasma chemical processes to the sonochemical mechanisms. Herein, we report for the first time sonochemical processes in water saturated with pure CO. The presence of CO causes a large increase in the H/D kinetic isotope effect (KIE) to α_H = 14.6 ± 1.8 in a 10% H₂O/D₂O mixture under 20 kHz ultrasound. The anomalous H/D KIE is attributed to electron quantum tunneling in the plasma produced by cavitation. In addition, CO₂ formed simultaneously with hydrogen during the sonochemical process is enriched with the ¹³C isotope, which indicates a V-V pumping mechanism typical for non-equilibrium plasma. Both observed KIEs unambiguously point to the contribution of quantum effects in sonochemical mechanisms.

2D Piezoelectric Bi2 MoO6 Nanoribbons for GSH-Enhanced Sonodynamic Therapy

Reducing the scavenging capacity of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and elevating ROS production are two primary goals of developing novel sonosensitizers for sonodynamic therapy (SDT). Hence, ultrathin 2D Bi₂ MoO₆ -poly(ethylene glycol) nanoribbons (BMO NRs) are designed as piezoelectric sonosensitizers for glutathione (GSH)-enhanced SDT. In cancer cells, BMO NRs can consume endogenous GSH to disrupt redox homeostasis, and the GSH-activated BMO NRs (GBMO) exhibit an oxygen-deficient structure, which can promote the separation of electron-hole pairs, thereby enhancing the efficiency of ROS production in SDT. The ultrathin GBMO NRs are piezoelectric, in which ultrasonic waves introduce mechanical strain to the nanoribbons, resulting in piezoelectric polarization and band tilting, thus accelerating toxic ROS production. The as-synthesized BMO NRs enable excellent computed tomography imaging of tumors and significant tumor suppression in vitro and in vivo. A piezoelectric Bi₂ MoO₆ sonosensitizer-mediated two-step enhancement SDT process, which is activated by endogenous GSH and amplified by exogenous ultrasound, is proposed. This process not only provides new options for improving SDT but also broadens the application of 2D piezoelectric materials as sonosensitizers in SDT.

Sonoprocessing: From Concepts to Large-Scale Reactors

Intensification of ultrasonic processes for diversified applications, including environmental remediation, extractions, food processes, and synthesis of materials, has received attention from the scientific community and industry. The mechanistic pathways involved in intensification of ultrasonic processes that include the ultrasonic generation of cavitation bubbles, radical formation upon their collapse, and the possibility of fine-tuning operating parameters for specific applications are all well documented in the literature. However, the scale-up of ultrasonic processes with large-scale sonochemical reactors for industrial applications remains a challenge. In this context, this review provides a complete overview of the current understanding of the role of operating parameters and reactor configuration on the sonochemical processes. Experimental and theoretical techniques to characterize the intensity and distribution of cavitation activity within sonoreactors are compared. Classes of laboratory and large-scale sonoreactors are reviewed, highlighting recent advances in batch and flow-through reactors. Finally, examples of large-scale sonoprocessing applications have been reviewed, discussing the major scale-up and sustainability challenges.

Study on the influence of advanced treatment processes on the surface properties of polylactic acid for a bio-based circular economy for plastics

New biotechnological processes using microorganisms and/or enzymes to convert carbonaceous resources, either biomass or depolymerized plastics into a broad range of different bioproducts are recognized for their high potential for reduced energy consumption and reduced GHG emissions. However, the hydrophobicity, high molecular weight, chemical and structural composition of most of them hinders their biodegradation. A solution to reduce the impact of non-biodegradable polymers spread in the environment would be to make them biodegradable. Different approaches are evaluated for enhancing their biodegradation. The aim of this work is to develop and optimize the ultrasonication (US) and UV photodegradation and their combination as well as dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma as pre-treatment technologies, which change surface properties and enhance the biodegradation of plastic by surface oxidation and thus helping bacteria to dock on them. Polylactic acid (PLA) has been chosen as a model polymer to investigate its surface degradation by US, UV, and DBD plasma using surface characterization methods like X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Confocal Laser Microscopy (CLSM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) as well as FT-IR and drop contour analysis. Both US and UV affect the surface properties substantially by eliminating the oxygen content of the polymer but in a different way, while plasma oxidizes the surface.

Power density modulated ultrasonic degradation of perfluoroalkyl substances with and without sparging Argon

The power density modulates the dynamics of the chemical reactions during the ultrasonic breakdown of organic compounds. We evaluated the ultrasonic degradation of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) at various power densities (30 W/L-262 W/L) with and without sparging Argon. We observed pseudo-first-order degradation kinetics at an initial PFASs concentration of 100 nM over a range of power density. The rate kinetics of degradation shows a non-linear increase with an increase in power density. We proposed a four-parameter logistic regression (4PLR) equation that empirically fits the degradation rate kinetics with the power density. The 4PLR equation predicts that the maximum achievable half-life of PFOA and PFOS sonochemical degradation are 1 and 10 min under a given set of experimental conditions. The high bulk-water temperature (i.e., 30 °C) of the aqueous sample helps increase the degradation rate of PFOA and PFOS. The addition of oxidants such as iodate and chlorate help enhance PFOA degradation in an argon environment at an ultrasonic frequency of 575 kHz.

Multibubble Sonoluminescence from a Theoretical Perspective

In the present review, complexity in multibubble sonoluminescence (MBSL) is discussed. At relatively low ultrasonic frequency, a cavitation bubble is filled mostly with water vapor at relatively high acoustic amplitude which results in OH-line emission by chemiluminescence as well as emissions from weakly ionized plasma formed inside a bubble at the end of the violent bubble collapse. At relatively high ultrasonic frequency or at relatively low acoustic amplitude at relatively low ultrasonic frequency, a cavitation bubble is mostly filled with noncondensable gases such as air or argon at the end of the bubble collapse, which results in relatively high bubble temperature and light emissions from plasma formed inside a bubble. Ionization potential lowering for atoms and molecules occurs due to the extremely high density inside a bubble at the end of the violent bubble collapse, which is one of the main reasons for the plasma formation inside a bubble in addition to the high bubble temperature due to quasi-adiabatic compression of a bubble, where "quasi" means that appreciable thermal conduction takes place between the heated interior of a bubble and the surrounding liquid. Due to bubble-bubble interaction, liquid droplets enter bubbles at the bubble collapse, which results in sodium-line emission.

Enhanced Sunlight-Driven Reactive Species Generation via Polarization Field in Nanopiezoelectric Heterostructures

Although it is established that the force-induced electric polarization field of piezoelectric semiconductors can be used to tune the transfer rate of photoexcited charge carriers, there is still a lack of successful strategies to effectively improve the photocatalytic reactivity and solar-to-chemical conversion efficiency (SCC) of piezoelectric materials. Here, we are the first to prepare and study a kind of catalyst based on nanopiezoelectric heterostructures of LiNbO₃-type ZnTiO₃·TiO₂ and tetragonal BaTiO₃ with Pt or FeO_x nanoparticle modification (i.e., ZBTO-Pt or ZBTO-FeO_x) for reactive species generation. With respect to the production of ^•OH and ^•O₂^- radicals, higher amounts were observed in piezophotocatalysis relative to those for individual piezo- and photocatalysis. Benefiting from the charge transfer resistance decreases by the deposition of Pt and FeO_x, the amounts of ^•OH radicals formed on ZBTO-Pt and ZBTO-FeO_x were approximately 48 and 21% higher than that on isolated ZBTO during piezophotocatalysis, and for the amounts of ^•O₂^- radicals the enhancements were approximately 11 and 6%, respectively. Furthermore, the concentrations of H₂O₂ formed on ZBTO-Pt and ZBTO-FeO_x under piezophotocatalysis reached approximately 315 and 206 μM after 100 min of reaction (and was still increasing) corresponding to 0.10 and 0.06% SCCs, respectively, which were also much higher than the concentrations and SCCs observed for piezo- and photocatalysis. The enhancements of piezophotocatalytic activities with these piezoelectric materials were related to the mechanical strain exerted on ZBTO, which generated a larger electric polarization field than those on ZnTiO₃·TiO₂ and BaTiO₃ as analyzed by a finite element method. This high-intensity electric polarization field accelerated the separation and transportation of photoexcited charge carriers in the highly sunlight responsive nanopiezoelectric heterostructures based on ZBTO-Pt and ZBTO-FeO_x.

Pump-probe X-ray holographic imaging of laser-induced cavitation bubbles with femtosecond FEL pulses

Cavitation bubbles can be seeded from a plasma following optical breakdown, by focusing an intense laser in water. The fast dynamics are associated with extreme states of gas and liquid, especially in the nascent state. This offers a unique setting to probe water and water vapor far-from equilibrium. However, current optical techniques cannot quantify these early states due to contrast and resolution limitations. X-ray holography with single X-ray free-electron laser pulses has now enabled a quasi-instantaneous high resolution structural probe with contrast proportional to the electron density of the object. In this work, we demonstrate cone-beam holographic flash imaging of laser-induced cavitation bubbles in water with nanofocused X-ray free-electron laser pulses. We quantify the spatial and temporal pressure distribution of the shockwave surrounding the expanding cavitation bubble at time delays shortly after seeding and compare the results to numerical simulations.

Multiphysics Modelling of Ultrasonic Melt Treatment in the Hot-Top and Launder during Direct-Chill Casting: Path to Indirect Microstructure Simulation

This study concerns the numerical simulation of two competing ultrasonic treatment (UST) strategies for microstructure refinement in the direct-chill (DC) casting of aluminium alloys. In the first, more conventional, case, the sonotrode vibrating at 17.3 kHz is immersed in the hop-top to treat the sump melt pool, in the second case, the sonotrode is inserted between baffles in the launder. It is known that microstructure refinement depends on the intensity of acoustic cavitation and the residence time of the treated fluid in the cavitation zone. The geometry, acoustic field intensity, induced flow velocities, and local temperature are factors which affect this treatment. The mathematical model developed in this work couples flow velocity, acoustics modified by cavitation, heat transfer, and solidification at the macroscale, with Lagrangian refiner particles, used to determine: (a) their residence time in the active zones, and (b) their eventual distribution in the sump as a function of the velocity field. This is the first attempt at using particle models as an efficient, though indirect, alternative to microstructure simulation, and the results indicate that UST in the launder, assisted with baffle separators, yields a more uniform distribution of refining particles, avoiding the strong acoustic streaming jet that, otherwise, accompanies hot-top treatment, and may lead to the strong segregation of refining particles. Experiments conducted in parallel to the numerical studies in this work appeared to support the results obtained in the simulation.

Photodynamic and Sonodynamic Therapy with Protoporphyrin IX: In Vitro and In Vivo Studies

Sono-photodynamic therapy is a promising anticancer technique based on the combination of sonodynamic and photodynamic therapy to improve the cancer treatment effectiveness. This study was aimed at analyzing the effects of the sono-photodynamic (SPD) activity on protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) solution and PpIX-loaded rat liver. In vitro, PpIX 5 μM solutions were irradiated with light (635 nm, 30-50 mW/cm²), ultrasound (1 MHz, 1-2 W/cm²) and both. The PpIX absorption spectra recorded over exposure time revealed that the PpIX decay rate induced by SPD activity (combined irradiation) was approximately the sum of those induced by photodynamic and sonodynamic activity. In vivo, rats were intraperitoneally injected with 5-aminolevulinic acid at the dose of 500 mg/kg weight. After 3 h of injection, the PpIX-loaded livers were irradiated with light (635 nm, 180 ± 9 J/cm²), ultrasound (1.0 MHz, 770 ± 40 J/cm²) and both using a single probe capable of illuminating and sonicating the liver simultaneously. After 30 h, the liver damage induced by each protocol was analyzed histologically. It was found that a greater necrosis depth was induced by the SPD activity. These results suggest that the SPD activity could improve the PpIX decay rate and have greater scope than photodynamic or sonodynamic activity. Further studies should be performed to gain a better understanding of this protocol.

Cerebrospinal Fluid Cavitation as a Mechanism of Blast-Induced Traumatic Brain Injury: A Review of Current Debates, Methods, and Findings

Cavitation has gained popularity in recent years as a potential mechanism of blast-induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI). This review presents the most prominent debates on cavitation; how bubbles can form or exist within the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and brain vasculature, potential mechanisms of cellular, and tissue level damage following the collapse of bubbles in response to local pressure fluctuations, and a survey of experimental and computational models used to address cavitation research questions. Due to the broad and varied nature of cavitation research, this review attempts to provide a necessary synthesis of cavitation findings relevant to bTBI, and identifies key areas where additional work is required. Fundamental questions about the viability and likelihood of CSF cavitation during blast remain, despite a variety of research regarding potential injury pathways. Much of the existing literature on bTBI evaluates cavitation based off its prima facie plausibility, while more rigorous evaluation of its likelihood becomes increasingly necessary. This review assesses the validity of some of the common assumptions in cavitation research, as well as highlighting outstanding questions that are essential in future work.

Thermodynamic effect of single bubble near a rigid wall

The objective of this paper is to numerically investigate the thermodynamic effect during bubble collapse near a rigid boundary. A compressible fluid model is introduced to accurately capture the transient process of bubble shapes and temperature, as well as corresponding pressure, and velocity. The accuracy of the numerical model is verified by the experimental data of bubble shapes, and Keller-Kolodner equation as well as its thermodynamic equation. The results show that a bubble near the rigid boundary presents high-speed jet in collapse stage and counter jet in rebound stage, respectively. In the collapse stage, the bubble margin will shrink rapidly and do the positive work on the compressible vapor inside the bubble, then a significant amount of heat will be generated, and finally the generation of high-speed jet drives the low-temperature liquid outside the bubble to occupy the position of high-temperature vapor inside the bubble. In the rebound stage, the counter jet moving away from the rigid boundary takes part of heat away from the sub-bubble, which avoids the external work of the expansion of the sub-bubble and the temperature reduction caused by the dissipation effect of the vortex structure. In addition, the initial standoff has a significant effect on the thermodynamics of bubble oscillation. The temperature keeps increasing with the increase of the initial standoff in the collapse stage, while it shows a downward trend with the increase of the initial standoff in the rebound stage. That's because the high-speed jet and counter jet of bubble gradually disappear when the initial standoff increases, which is the important reason for the opposite evolution trend of temperature in collapse and rebound stage.
