Strongly coupled binuclear uranium-oxo complexes from uranyl oxo rearrangement and reductive silylation

Does Reduction-Induced Isomerization of a Uranium(III) Aryl Complex Proceed via C-H Oxidative Addition and Reductive Elimination across the Uranium(II/IV) Redox Couple?

Reaction of the uranium(III) bis(amidinate) aryl complex {TerphC(NⁱPr)₂}₂U(Terph) (2, where Terph = 4,4″-di-tert-butyl-m-terphenyl-2'-yl) with a strong reductant enabled isolation of isomeric uranium(III) bis(amidinate) aryl product {TerphC(NⁱPr)₂}₂U(Terph*) (3, where Terph* = 4,4″-di-tert-butyl-m-terphenyl-4'-yl). In terms of connectivity, 3 differs from 2 only in the positions of the U-C and C-H bonds on the central aryl ring of the m-terphenyl-based ligand. A deuterium labeling study ruled out mechanisms for this isomerization involving intermolecular abstraction or deprotonation of the ligand C-H bonds activated during the reaction. Due to the complexity of this rapid, heterogeneous reaction, experimental studies could not further distinguish between two different intramolecular C-H activation mechanisms. However, high-level computational studies were consistent with a mechanism that included two sets of unimolecular, mononuclear C-H oxidative addition and reductive elimination steps involving uranium(II/IV).

Synthesis and Characterization of Pyridine Dipyrrolide Uranyl Complexes

The first actinide complexes of the pyridine dipyrrolide (PDP) ligand class, (^MesPDP^Ph)UO₂(THF) and (^Cl2PhPDP^Ph)UO₂(THF), are reported as the U^VI uranyl adducts of the bulky aryl substituted pincers (^MesPDP^Ph)^2- and (^Cl2PhPDP^Ph)^2- (derived from 2,6-bis(5-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)-3-phenyl-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)pyridine (H₂^MesPDP^Ph, Mes = 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl), and 2,6-bis(5-(2,6-dichlorophenyl)-3-phenyl-1H-pyrrol-2-yl)pyridine (H₂^Cl2PhPDP^Ph, Cl₂Ph = 2,6-dichlorophenyl), respectively). Following the in situ deprotonation of the proligand with lithium hexamethyldisilazide to generate the corresponding dilithium salts (e.g., Li₂^ArPDP^Ph, Ar = Mes of Cl₂Ph), salt metathesis with [UO₂Cl₂(THF)₂]₂ afforded both compounds in moderate yields. The characterization of each species has been undertaken by a combination of solid- and solution-state methods, including combustion analysis, infrared, electronic absorption, and NMR spectroscopies. In both complexes, single-crystal X-ray diffraction has revealed a distorted octahedral geometry in the solid state, enforced by the bite angle of the rigid meridional (^ArPDP^Ph)^2- pincer ligand. The electrochemical analysis of both compounds by cyclic voltammetry in tetrahydrofuran (THF) reveals rich redox profiles, including events assigned as U^VI/U^V redox couples. A time-dependent density functional theory study has been performed on (^MesPDP^Ph)UO₂(THF) and provides insight into the nature of the transitions that comprise its electronic absorption spectrum.

Assembling Diuranium Complexes in Different States of Charge with a Bridging Redox-Active Ligand

Radical-bridged diuranium complexes are desirable for their potential high exchange coupling and single molecule magnet (SMM) behavior, but remain rare. Here we report for the first time radical-bridged diuranium(iv) and diuranium(iii) complexes. Reaction of [U{N(SiMe₃)₂}₃] with 2,2′-bipyrimidine (bpym) resulted in the formation of the bpym-bridged diuranium(iv) complex [{((Me₃Si)₂N)₃U^IV}₂(μ-bpym²⁻)], 1. Reduction with 1 equiv. KC₈ reduces the complex, affording [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][{((Me₃Si)₂N)₃U}₂(μ-bpym)], 2, which is best described as a radical-bridged U^III–bpym˙⁻–U^III complex. Further reduction of 1 with 2 equiv. KC₈, affords [K(2.2.2-cryptand)]₂[{((Me₃Si)₂N)₃U^III}₂(μ-bpym²⁻)], 3. Addition of AgBPh₄ to complex 1 resulted in the oxidation of the ligand, yielding the radical-bridged complex [{((Me₃Si)₂N)₃U^IV}₂(μ-bpym˙⁻)][BPh₄], 4. X-ray crystallography, electrochemistry, susceptibility data, EPR and DFT/CASSCF calculations are in line with their assignments. In complexes 2 and 4 the presence of the radical-bridge leads to slow magnetic relaxation.

Convenient routes to dinuclear complexes of uranium where two uranium centers are bridged by the redox-active ligand bpym were identified resulting in unique and stable radical-bridged dimetallic complexes of U(iii) and U(iv) showing SMM behaviour.

Creation of an unexpected plane of enhanced covalency in cerium(III) and berkelium(III) terpyridyl complexes

Controlling the properties of heavy element complexes, such as those containing berkelium, is challenging because relativistic effects, spin-orbit and ligand-field splitting, and complex metal-ligand bonding, all dictate the final electronic states of the molecules. While the first two of these are currently beyond experimental control, covalent M‒L interactions could theoretically be boosted through the employment of chelators with large polarizabilities that substantially shift the electron density in the molecules. This theory is tested by ligating BkIII with 4'-(4-nitrophenyl)-2,2':6',2"-terpyridine (terpy*), a ligand with a large dipole. The resultant complex, Bk(terpy*)(NO3)3(H2O)·THF, is benchmarked with its closest electrochemical analog, Ce(terpy*)(NO3)3(H2O)·THF. Here, we show that enhanced Bk‒N interactions with terpy* are observed as predicted. Unexpectedly, induced polarization by terpy* also creates a plane in the molecules wherein the M‒L bonds trans to terpy* are shorter than anticipated. Moreover, these molecules are highly anisotropic and rhombic EPR spectra for the CeIII complex are reported.

Efficient and durable uranium extraction from uranium mine tailings seepage water via a photoelectrochemical method

Current photocatalytic uranium (U) extraction methods have intrinsic obstacles, such as the recombination of charge carriers, and the deactivation of catalysts by extracted U. Here we show that, by applying a bias potential on the photocatalyst, the photoelectrochemical (PEC) method can address these limitations. We demonstrate that, owing to efficient spatial charge-carriers separation driven by the applied bias, the PEC method enables efficient and durable U extraction. The effects of multiple operation conditions are investigated. The U extraction proceeds via single-step one-electron reduction, resulting in the formation of pentavalent U, which can facilitate future studies on this often-overlooked U species. In real seepage water the PEC method achieves an extraction capacity of 0.67 gU m-3·h-1 without deactivation for 156 h continuous operation, which is 17 times faster than the photocatalytic method. This work provides an alternative tool for U resource recovery and facilitates future studies on U(V) chemistry.

Contemporary macrocycles for discrete polymetallic complexes: precise control over structure and function

The growth of multimetallic clusters and complexes can proceed in the presence of suitable ligands, but often leads to polydisperse structures with poor solubility. As an alternative approach, macrocyclic molecules can anchor the multimetallic complex, directing its formation and stabilizing the resulting product. This approach can provide excellent control over the growth of clusters, and offers a handle to control solubility and other properties of the resulting complexes. In this Tutorial Review, we discuss recent activity (primarily the last two decades) directed at the controlled and reproducible synthesis of multimetallic complexes using macrocyclic ligands. Throughout the review, we focus on the unusual structures that are only accessible by using macrocycles as ligands, and their unique properties.

Photoluminescence of Pentavalent Uranyl Amide Complexes

Pentavalent uranyl species are crucial intermediates in transformations that play a key role for the nuclear industry and have recently been demonstrated to persist in reducing biotic and abiotic aqueous environments. However, due to the inherent instability of pentavalent uranyl, little is known about its electronic structure. Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of a series of monomeric and dimeric, pentavalent uranyl amide complexes. These synthetic efforts enable the acquisition of emission spectra of well-defined pentavalent uranyl complexes using photoluminescence techniques, which establish a unique signature to characterize its electronic structure and, potentially, its role in biological and engineered environments via emission spectroscopy.

Recent developments in highly basic N-heterocyclic iminato ligands in actinide chemistry

In the last decade, major conceptual advances in the chemistry of actinide molecules and materials have been made to demonstrate their distinct reactivity profiles as compared to lanthanide and transition metal compounds, but some difficult questions remain concerning the intriguing stability of low-valent actinide complexes, and the importance of the 5f-orbitals in reactivity and bonding. The imidazolin-2-iminato moiety has been extensively used in ligands for the advancement of actinide chemistry owing to its unique capability of stabilizing the reactive and highly electrophilic metal ions by virtue of its strong electron donation and steric tunability. The current review article describes recent developments in the chemistry of light actinide metal ions (thorium and uranium) bearing these N-heterocyclic iminato moieties as supporting ligands. In addition, the effect of ring expansion of the N-heterocycle on the catalytic aptitude of the organoactinides is also described herein. The synthesis and reactivity of actinide complexes bearing N-heterocyclic iminato ligands are presented, and promising apposite applications are also presented. The current review focuses on addressing the catalytic behavior of actinide complexes with oxygen-containing substrates such as in the Tishchenko reaction, hydroelementation processes, and polymerization reactions. Actinide complexes have also found new catalytic applications, as demonstrated by the potent chemoselective carbonyl hydroboration and tandem proton-transfer esterification (TPTE) reaction, featuring coupling between an aldehyde and alcohol.

Relativistic DFT Probe for Reaction Energies and Electronic/Bonding Properties of Polypyrrolic Hetero-Bimetallic Actinide Complexes: Effects of Uranyl endo-Oxo Functionalization

A series of hetero-bimetallic actinide complexes of the Schiff-base polypyrrolic macrocycle (L), featuring cation-cation interactions (CCIs), were systematically investigated using relativistic density functional theory (DFT). The tetrahydrofuran (THF) solvated complex [(THF)(OU^VIOU^IV)(THF)(L)]²⁺ has high reaction free energy (Δ_rG), and its replacement with electron-donating iodine promotes the reaction thermodynamics to obtain uranyl iodide [(I)(OU^VIOU^IV)(I)(L)]²⁺ (U^VI-U^IV). Retaining this coordination geometry, calculations have been extended to other An(IV) (An = Th, Pa, Np, Pu), i.e., for the substitution of U(IV) to obtain U^VI-An^IV. As a consequence, the reaction free energy is appreciably lowered, suggesting the thermodynamic feasibility for the experimental synthesis of these bimetallic complexes. Among all U^VI-An^IV, the electron-spin density and high-lying occupied orbitals of U^VI-Pa^IV show a large extent of electron transfer from electron-rich Pa(IV) to electron-deficient U(VI), leading to a more stable U^V-Pa^V oxidation state. Additionally, the shortest bond distance and the comparatively negative E_int of the Pa-O_endo bond suggest more positive and negative charges (Q) of Pa and endo-oxo atoms, respectively. As a result of the enhanced Pa-O_endo bond and strong CCI in U^VI-Pa^IV along with the corresponding lowest reaction free energy among all of the optimized complexes, uranyl species is a better candidate for the experimental synthesis in the ultimate context of environmental remediation.

New zinc complexes derived from "self-adaptable" acyclic diiminodipyrromethanes as potent catalysts for the reduction of curing temperature of bisphenol-A/F benzoxazines

The simple modification of the Schiff-base ligands often brings significant changes in the coordination properties of the metal-complexes, providing newer prospects for their unexplored applications. In this context, the present work utilized the “self-adaptable” acyclic diiminodipyrromethane Schiff's bases (2a and 2b) for the synthesis of their Zn-based complexes and explored their potential in the ring-opening polymerization of benzoxazines. The two zinc complexes of composition [Zn{(Ph)(CH₃)C(2,6-ⁱPr₂C₆H₃–N Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> CH–C₄H₂N)(2,6-ⁱPr₂C₆H₃–NCH–C₄H₂NH)}₂] (3) and [ZnCl₂{(Ph)(CH₃)C(Ph₃C–NHCH–C₄H₂N)₂}] (4) were synthesized in good yields, and the structures were confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD). Later, zinc complexes (3 & 4) were used as catalysts to reduce the curing (ring-opening polymerization) temperature of benzoxazine monomers such as Bisphenol-A (BA-a) and Bisphenol-F (BF-a) benzoxazines. Dynamic scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies revealed that the on-set curing (T_p) temperatures were reasonably decreased upto 20% for the benzoxazines. Furthermore, the thermal stabilities of the polybenzoxazines (PBzs) derived in the presence of zinc catalysts (3 and 4) were compared with PBz obtained in the absence of catalyst under similar conditions. The thermal studies reveled that there is no significant changes in the initial degradation of polymers. However, the thermal stability in terms of char yields at 800 °C improved upto 10–21% for the bisphenol-A/F benzoxazines.

Coordination of Uranyl to the Redox-Active Calix[4]pyrrole Ligand

Reaction of [Li(THF)]₄[L] (L = Me₈-calix[4]pyrrole]) with 0.5 equiv of [U^VIO₂Cl₂(THF)₂]₂ results in formation of the oxidized calix[4]pyrrole product, [Li(THF)]₂[L^Δ] (1), concomitant with formation of reduced uranium oxide byproducts. Complex 1 can also be generated by reaction of [Li(THF)]₄[L] with 1 equiv of I₂. We hypothesize that formation of 1 proceeds via formation of a highly oxidizing cis-uranyl intermediate, [Li]₂[cis-U^VIO₂(calix[4]pyrrole)]. To test this hypothesis, we explored the reaction of 1 with either 0.5 equiv of [U^VIO₂Cl₂(THF)₂]₂ or 1 equiv of [U^VIO₂(OTf)₂(THF)₃], which affords the isostructural uranyl complexes, [Li(THF)][U^VIO₂(L^Δ)Cl(THF)] (2) and [Li(THF)][U^VIO₂(L^Δ)(OTf)(THF)] (3), respectively. In the solid state, 2 and 3 feature unprecedented uranyl-η⁵-pyrrole interactions, making them rare examples of uranyl organometallic complexes. In addition, 2 and 3 exhibit some of the smallest O-U-O angles reported to date (2: 162.0(7) and 162.7(7)°; 3: 164.5(5)°). Importantly, the O-U-O bending observed in these complexes suggests that the oxidation of [Li(THF)]₄[L] does indeed occur via an unobserved cis-uranyl intermediate.

Synthesis and Characterization of a Binuclear Copper(II)-dipyriamethyrin Complex: [Cu2(dipyriamethyrin)(μ2-1,1-acetato)2]

The reaction between dipyriamethyrin and copper(II) acetate [Cu(OAc)₂] afforded what is, to our knowledge, the first transition metal-dipyriamethyrin complex. Molecular and electronic characterization of this binuclear Cu(II) complex via EPR, UV-vis, and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed marked differences between the present constructs and previously reported binuclear copper(II) hexaphyrin species. UV-vis titration analyses provided evidence for a homotropic positive allosteric effect, wherein the binuclear species is formed without significant intermediacy of a monomeric complex.

Oligonuclear Actinoid Complexes with Schiff Bases as Ligands-Older Achievements and Recent Progress

Even 155 years after their first synthesis, Schiff bases continue to surprise inorganic chemists. Schiff-base ligands have played a major role in the development of modern coordination chemistry because of their relevance to a number of interdisciplinary research fields. The chemistry, properties and applications of transition metal and lanthanoid complexes with Schiff-base ligands are now quite mature. On the contrary, the coordination chemistry of Schiff bases with actinoid (5f-metal) ions is an emerging area, and impressive research discoveries have appeared in the last 10 years or so. The chemistry of actinoid ions continues to attract the intense interest of many inorganic groups around the world. Important scientific challenges are the understanding the basic chemistry associated with handling and recycling of nuclear materials; investigating the redox properties of these elements and the formation of complexes with unusual metal oxidation states; discovering materials for the recovery of trans-{U^VIO₂}²⁺ from the oceans; elucidating and manipulating actinoid-element multiple bonds; discovering methods to carry out multi-electron reactions; and improving the 5f-metal ions’ potential for activation of small molecules. The study of 5f-metal complexes with Schiff-base ligands is a currently “hot” topic for a variety of reasons, including issues of synthetic inorganic chemistry, metalosupramolecular chemistry, homogeneous catalysis, separation strategies for nuclear fuel processing and nuclear waste management, bioinorganic and environmental chemistry, materials chemistry and theoretical chemistry. This almost-comprehensive review, covers aspects of synthetic chemistry, reactivity and the properties of dinuclear and oligonuclear actinoid complexes based on Schiff-base ligands. Our work focuses on the significant advances that have occurred since 2000, with special attention on recent developments. The review is divided into eight sections (chapters). After an introductory section describing the organization of the scientific information, Sections 2 and 3 deal with general information about Schiff bases and their coordination chemistry, and the chemistry of actinoids, respectively. Section 4 highlights the relevance of Schiff bases to actinoid chemistry. Sections 5–7 are the “main menu” of the scientific meal of this review. The discussion is arranged according the actinoid (only for Np, Th and U are Schiff-base complexes known). Sections 5 and 7 are further arranged into parts according to the oxidation states of Np and U, respectively, because the coordination chemistry of these metals is very much dependent on their oxidation state. In Section 8, some concluding comments are presented and a brief prognosis for the future is attempted.

Mixed uranyl and neptunyl cation–cation interaction-driven clusters: structures, energetic stability, and nuclear quadrupole interactions

Hexadentate β-Dicarbonyl(bis-catecholamine) Ligands for Efficient Uranyl Cation Decorporation: Thermodynamic and Antioxidant Activity Studies

The special linear dioxo cation structure of the uranyl cation, which relegates ligand coordination to an equatorial plane perpendicular to the O═U═O vector, poses an unusual challenge for the rational design of efficient chelating agents. Therefore, the planar hexadentate ligand rational design employed in this work incorporates two bidentate catecholamine (CAM) chelating moieties and a flexible linker with a β-dicarbonyl chelating moiety (β-dicarbonyl(CAM)₂ ligands). The solution thermodynamics of β-dicarbonyl(CAM)₂ with a uranyl cation was investigated by potentiometric and spectrophotometric titrations. The results demonstrated that the pUO₂²⁺ values are significantly higher than for the previously reported TMA(2Li-1,2-HOPO)₂, and efficient chelation of the uranyl cation was realized by the planar hexadentate β-dicarbonyl(CAM)₂. The efficient chelating ability of β-dicarbonyl(CAM)₂ was attributed to the presence of the more flexible β-dicarbonyl chelating linker and planar hexadentate structure, which favors the geometric arrangement between ligand and uranyl coordinative preference. Meanwhile, β-dicarbonyl(CAM)₂ also exhibits higher antiradical efficiency in comparison to butylated hydroxyanisole. These results indicated that β-dicarbonyl(CAM)₂ has potential application prospects as a chelating agent for efficient chelation of a uranyl cation.

Differential uranyl(v) oxo-group bonding between the uranium and metal cations from groups 1, 2, 4, and 12; a high energy resolution X-ray absorption, computational, and synthetic study

The uranyl(vi) ‘Pacman’ complex [(UO₂)(py)(H₂L)] A (L = polypyrrolic Schiff-base macrocycle) is reduced by Cp₂Ti(η²-Me₃SiC Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> CSiMe₃) and [Cp₂TiCl]₂ to oxo-titanated uranyl(v) complexes [(py)(Cp₂Ti^IIIOUO)(py)(H₂L)] 1 and [(ClCp₂Ti^IVOUO)(py)(H₂L)] 2. Combination of Zr^II and Zr^IV synthons with A yields the first Zr^IV–uranyl(v) complex, [(ClCp₂ZrOUO)(py)(H₂L)] 3. Similarly, combinations of Ae⁰ and Ae^II synthons (Ae = alkaline earth) afford the mono-oxo metalated uranyl(v) complexes [(py)₂(ClMgOUO)(py)(H₂L)] 4, [(py)₂(thf)₂(ICaOUO)(py) (H₂L)] 5; the zinc complexes [(py)₂(XZnOUO)(py)(H₂L)] (X = Cl 6, I 7) are formed in a similar manner. In contrast, the direct reactions of Rb or Cs metal with A generate the first mono-rubidiated and mono-caesiated uranyl(v) complexes; monomeric [(py)₃(RbOUO)(py)(H₂L)] 8 and hexameric [(MOUO)(py)(H₂L)]₆ (M = Rb 8b or Cs 9). In these uranyl(v) complexes, the pyrrole N–H atoms show strengthened hydrogen-bonding interactions with the endo-oxos, classified computationally as moderate-strength hydrogen bonds. Computational DFT MO (density functional theory molecular orbital) and EDA (energy decomposition analysis), uranium M₄ edge HR-XANES (High Energy Resolution X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure) and 3d4f RIXS (Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering) have been used (the latter two for the first time for uranyl(v) in 7 (ZnI)) to compare the covalent character in the U^V–O and O–M bonds and show the 5f orbitals in uranyl(vi) complex A are unexpectedly more delocalised than in the uranyl(v) 7 (ZnI) complex. The O_exo–Zn bonds have a larger covalent contribution compared to the Mg–O_exo/Ca–O_exo bonds, and more covalency is found in the U–O_exo bond in 7 (ZnI), in agreement with the calculations.

Tuning the structure, reactivity and magnetic communication of nitride-bridged uranium complexes with the ancillary ligands

The reactivity of the nitride ligand is increased in complexes of uranium(iv) when bound by the OSi(O^tBu)₃ ligand as opposed to N(SiMe₃)₂, but magnetic exchange coupling is decreased.

Molecular uranium nitride complexes were prepared to relate their small molecule reactivity to the nature of the U Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> N Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> U bonding imposed by the supporting ligand. The U⁴⁺–U⁴⁺ nitride complexes, [NBu₄][{((^tBuO)₃SiO)₃U}₂(μ-N)], [NBu₄]-1, and [NBu₄][((Me₃Si)₂N)₃U}₂(μ-N)], 2, were synthesised by reacting NBu₄N₃ with the U³⁺ complexes, [U(OSi(O^tBu)₃)₂(μ-OSi(O^tBu)₃)]₂ and [U(N(SiMe₃)₂)₃], respectively. Oxidation of 2 with AgBPh₄ gave the U⁴⁺–U⁵⁺ analogue, [((Me₃Si)₂N)₃U}₂(μ-N)], 4. The previously reported methylene-bridged U⁴⁺–U⁴⁺ nitride [Na(dme)₃][((Me₃Si)₂)₂U(μ-N)(μ-κ²-C,N-CH₂SiMe₂NSiMe₃)U(N(SiMe₃)₂)₂] (dme = 1,2-dimethoxyethane), [Na(dme)₃]-3, provided a versatile precursor for the synthesis of the mixed-ligand U⁴⁺–U⁴⁺ nitride complex, [Na(dme)₃][((Me₃Si)₂N)₃U(μ-N)U(N(SiMe₃)₂)(OSi(O^tBu)₃)], 5. The reactivity of the 1–5 complexes was assessed with CO₂, CO, and H₂. Complex [NBu₄]-1 displays similar reactivity to the previously reported heterobimetallic complex, [Cs{((^tBuO)₃SiO)₃U}₂(μ-N)], [Cs]-1, whereas the amide complexes 2 and 4 are unreactive with these substrates. The mixed-ligand complexes 3 and 5 react with CO and CO₂ but not H₂. The nitride complexes [NBu₄]-1, 2, 4, and 5 along with their small molecule activation products were structurally characterized. Magnetic data measured for the all-siloxide complexes [NBu₄]-1 and [Cs]-1 show uncoupled uranium centers, while strong antiferromagnetic coupling was found in complexes containing amide ligands, namely 2 and 5 (with maxima in the χ versus T plot of 90 K and 55 K). Computational analysis indicates that the U(μ-N) bond order decreases with the introduction of oxygen-based ligands effectively increasing the nucleophilicity of the bridging nitride.

Theoretical Investigation of the Electronic Structure and Magnetic Properties of Oxo-Bridged Uranyl(V) Dinuclear and Trinuclear Complexes

The uranyl(V) complexes [UO₂(dbm)₂K(18C6)]₂ (dbm = dibenzoylmethanate) and [UO₂(L)]₃(L = 2-(4-tolyl)-1,3-bis(quinolyl)malondiiminate), exhibiting diamond-shaped U₂O₂ and triangular-shaped U₃O₃ cores respectively with 5f¹-5f¹ and 5f¹-5f¹-5f¹ configurations, have been investigated using relativistic density functional theory (DFT). The bond order and QTAIM analyses reveal that the covalent contribution to the bonding within the oxo cores is slightly more important for U₃O₃ than for U₂O₂, in line with the shorter U-O distances existing in the trinuclear complex in comparison to those in the binuclear complex. Using the broken symmetry (BS) approach combined with the B3LYP functional for the calculation of the magnetic exchange coupling constants (J) between the magnetic centers, the antiferromagnetic (AF) character of these complexes was confirmed, the estimated J values being respectively equal to -24.1 and -7.2 cm^-1 for the dioxo and trioxo species. It was found that the magnetic exchange is more sensitive to small variations of the core geometry of the dioxo species in comparison to the trioxo species. Although the robust AF exchange coupling within the U_xO_x cores is generally maintained when small variations of the UOU angle are applied, a weak ferromagnetic character appears in the dioxo species when this angle is higher than 114°, its value for the actual structure being equal to 105.9°. The electronic factors driving the magnetic coupling are discussed.

Facile N-functionalization and strong magnetic communication in a diuranium(v) bis-nitride complex

Uranium nitride complexes are of high interest because of their ability to effect dinitrogen reduction and functionalization and to promote magnetic communication, but studies of their properties and reactivity remain rare. Here we have prepared in 73% yield the diuranium(v) bis-nitride complex [K₂{[U(OSi(O ^t Bu)₃)₃]₂(μ-N)₂}], 4, from the thermal decomposition of the nitride-, azide-bridged diuranium(iv) complex [K₂{[U(OSi(O ^t Bu)₃)₃]₂(μ-N)(μ-N₃)}], 3. The bis-nitride 4 reacts in ambient conditions with 1 equiv. of CS₂ and 1 equiv. of CO₂ resulting in N-C bond formation to afford the diuranium(v) complexes [K₂{[U(OSi(O ^t Bu)₃)₃]₂(μ-N)(μ-S)(μ-NCS)}], 5 and [K₂{[U(OSi(O ^t Bu)₃)₃]₂(μ-N)(μ-O)(μ-NCO)}], 6, respectively. Both nitrides in 4 react with CO resulting in oxidative addition of CO to one nitride and CO cleavage by the second nitride to afford the diuranium(iv) complex [K₂{[U(OSi(O ^t Bu)₃)₃]₂(μ-CN)(μ-O)(μ-NCO)}], 7. Complex 4 also effects the remarkable oxidative cleavage of H₂ in mild conditions to afford the bis-imido bridged diuranium(iv) complex [K₂{[U(OSi(O ^t Bu)₃)₃]₂(μ-NH)₂}], 8 that can be further protonated to afford ammonia in 73% yield. Complex 8 provides a good model for hydrogen cleavage by metal nitrides in the Haber-Bosch process. The measured magnetic data show an unusually strong antiferromagnetic coupling between uranium(v) ions in the complexes 4 and 6 with Neel temperatures of 77 K and 60 K respectively, demonstrating that nitrides are attractives linkers for promoting magnetic communication in uranium complexes.

DFT Investigations of the Magnetic Properties of Actinide Complexes

Over the past 25 years, magnetic actinide complexes have been the object of considerable attention, not only at the experimental level, but also at the theoretical one. Such systems are of great interest, owing to the well-known larger spin–orbit coupling for actinide ions, and could exhibit slow relaxation of the magnetization, arising from a large anisotropy barrier, and magnetic hysteresis of purely molecular origin below a given blocking temperature. Furthermore, more diffuse 5f orbitals than lanthanide 4f ones (more covalency) could lead to stronger magnetic super-exchange. On the other hand, the extraordinary experimental challenges of actinide complexes chemistry, because of their rarity and toxicity, afford computational chemistry a particularly valuable role. However, for such a purpose, the use of a multiconfigurational post-Hartree-Fock approach is required, but such an approach is computationally demanding for polymetallic systems—notably for actinide ones—and usually simplified models are considered instead of the actual systems. Thus, Density Functional Theory (DFT) appears as an alternative tool to compute magnetic exchange coupling and to explore the electronic structure and magnetic properties of actinide-containing molecules, especially when the considered systems are very large. In this paper, relevant achievements regarding DFT investigations of the magnetic properties of actinide complexes are surveyed, with particular emphasis on some representative examples that illustrate the subject, including actinides in Single Molecular Magnets (SMMs) and systems featuring metal-metal super-exchange coupling interactions. Examples are drawn from studies that are either entirely computational or are combined experimental/computational investigations in which the latter play a significant role.

Uranyl Functionalization Mediated by Redox-Active Ligands: Generation of O-C Bonds via Acylation

A series of uranyl compounds with the redox-active iminoquinone ligand have been synthesized, and their electronic structures elucidated using multinuclear NMR, EPR, electronic absorption spectroscopies, SQUID magnetometry, and X-ray crystallography. Characterization and analysis of the iminoquinone (iq⁰) complex, (^dippiq)UO₂(OTf)₂THF (1-iq), the iminosemiquinone (isq^1-) complex, (^dippisq)₂UO₂THF (2-isq), and the amidophenolate (ap^2-) complex, [(^dippap)₂UO₂THF][K(18-crown-6)(THF)₂]₂(3-ap crown) show that reduction events are ligand-based, with the uranium center remaining in the hexavalent state. Reactivity of 2-isq with B-chlorocatecholborane or pivaloyl chloride leads to U-O_uranyl bond scission and reduction of U(VI) to U(IV) concomitant with ligand oxidation along with organic byproducts. ¹⁸O isotopic labeling experiments along with IR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and multinuclear NMR spectroscopy confirm that the organic byproducts contain oxygen atoms which originate from U-O_uranyl bond activation.

Excited-state effects on magnetic properties of U(iii) and U(iv) pyrazolylborate complexes

For a family of uranium pyrazolylborate complexes, we observe correlations between excited-state mixing and slow relaxation of magnetization for U(iii) complexes, and U⋯B distances in U(iv) complexes.

Polynuclear alkoxy-zinc complexes of bowl-shaped macrocycles and their use in the copolymerisation of cyclohexene oxide and CO2

The reactions between alcohols and the tetranuclear ethyl-Zn complexes of an ortho-phenylene-bridged polypyrrole macrocycle, Zn4Et4(L1) 1 and the related anthracenyl-bridged macrocyclic complex, Zn4Et4(THF)4(L2) 2 have been studied. With long-chain alcohols such as n-hexanol, the clean formation of the tetranuclear hexoxide complex Zn4(OC6H13)4(L1) 3 occurs. In contrast, the use of shorter-chain alcohols such as i-propanol results in the trinuclear complex Zn3(μ2-OiPr)2(μ3-OiPr)(HL1) 4 that arises from demetalation; this complex was characterised by X-ray crystallography. The clean formation of these polynuclear zinc clusters allowed a study of their use as catalysts in the ring-opening copolymerisation (ROCOP) reaction between cyclohexene oxide and CO2. In situ reactions involving the pre-catalyst 1 and n-hexanol formed the desired polymer with the best selectivity for polycarbonate (90%) at 30 atm CO2, whilst the activity and performance of pre-catalyst 2 was poor in comparison.

Double uranium oxo cations derived from uranyl by borane or silane reduction

A new type of double uranium oxo cation [O-U-O-U-O]4+ is prepared by selective oxygen-atom abstraction from macrocyclic uranyl complexes using either boranes or silanes. A significant degree of multiple U[double bond, length as m-dash]O bonding is evident throughout the U2O3 core, but either trans-,cis- or trans-,trans-OUOUO motifs can be isolated as boron- or silicon-capped oxo complexes. Further controlled deoxygenation of the borylated system is also possible.

The [U2 F12 ]2- Anion of Sr[U2 F12 ]

The D_2h -symmetric dinuclear complex anion [U₂ F₁₂ ]^2- of pastel green Sr[U₂ F₁₂ ] shows a hitherto unknown structural feature: The coordination polyhedra around the U atoms are edge-linked monocapped trigonal prisms, the U^V atoms are therefore seven-coordinated. This leads to a U-U distance of 3.8913(6) Å. A weak U^V -U^V interaction is observed for the dinuclear [U₂ F₁₂ ]^2- complex and described by the antiferromagnetic exchange J_exp of circa -29.9 cm^-1 . The crystalline compound can be easily prepared from SrF₂ and β-UF₅ in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride (aHF) at room temperature. It was studied by means of single crystal X-ray diffraction, IR, Raman and UV/VIS spectroscopy, magnetic measurements, and by molecular as well as by solid-state quantum chemical calculations.

Improved Access to 1,8-Diformyl-carbazoles Leads to Metal-Free Carbazole-Based [2 + 2] Schiff Base Macrocycles with Strong Turn-On Fluorescence Sensing of Zinc(II) Ions

Development of a new and high yielding synthetic route to 1,8-diformyl-carbazoles 3 (3a 3,6-di- tert-butyl substituted; 3b 3,6-unsubstituted) is reported. Use of a Heck coupling reaction, followed by ozonolysis, has greatly facilitated the preparation of these interesting head units in useful quantities. An initial foray into the new generations of Schiff base macrocycles that ready access to these head units (3) opens up, has led to the direct (i.e., metal-free) synthesis of two [2 + 2] macrocycles from 3a or 3b with 1,2-diaminoethane, H₂L^tBu (4a) and H₂L^H (4b), respectively, obtained as yellow powders in high yields (87-88%). The dizinc complex [Zn₂L^H(OAc)₂] (5b) was isolated as a bright yellow solid in 83% yield, by 1:2:2 reaction of H₂L^H with zinc(II) acetate and triethylamine. Aldehydes 3a and 3b, macrocycle H₂L^H, and complex [Zn₂L^H(OAc)₂] (5b) have been structurally characterized. The carbazole NH makes bifurcated hydrogen bonds with the pair of flanking 1,8-diformyl-moieties in 3, or 1,8-diimine-moieties in H₂L^H, leading to a flat, all- cis conformation. The stepped conformation of the metal-free macrocycle H₂L^H is retained in [Zn₂L^H(OAc)₂], despite deprotonation and binding of two zinc(II) centers within the two tridentate pockets. The N₃O₂ coordination of the zinc ions is completed by one μ_1,1- and one μ_1,3- bridging acetate anion. Excitation of nanomolar [Zn₂L^H(OAc)₂] in DMF at 335 nm results in clearly visible blue fluorescence (λ_max = 460 nm). Further studies on the H₂L^H macrocycle revealed turn-on fluorescence, with selectivity (over Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺ and a range of 3d dications) and nanomolar sensitivity for zinc(II) ions, highlighting one of the many potential applications for these new carbazole-based Schiff base macrocycles.

Future Directions for Transuranic Single Molecule Magnets

Single Molecule Magnets (SMMs) based on transition metals and rare earths have been the object of considerable attention for the past 25 years. These systems exhibit slow relaxation of the magnetization, arising from a sizeable anisotropy barrier, and magnetic hysteresis of purely molecular origin below a given blocking temperature. Despite initial predictions that SMMs based on 5f-block elements could outperform most others, the results obtained so far have not met expectations. Exploiting the versatile chemistry of actinides and their favorable intrinsic magnetic properties proved, indeed, to be more difficult than assumed. However, the large majority of studies reported so far have been dedicated to uranium molecules, thus leaving the largest part of the 5f-block practically unexplored. Here, we present a short review of the progress achieved up to now and discuss some options for a possible way forward.

Reduction of Carbonyl Groups by Uranium(III) and Formation of a Stable Amide Radical Anion

Methyl benzoate, N,N-dimethylbenzamide, and benzophenone were reduced by U^III [N(SiMe₃ )₂ ]₃ resulting in uranium(IV) products. Reduction of benzophenone lead to U^IV [OC⋅Ph₂ )][N(SiMe₃ )₂ ]₃ , (1.1) which forms the dinuclear complex, [N(SiMe₃ )₂ ]₃ U^IV (OCPhPh-CPh₂ O)U^IV [N(SiMe₃ )₂ ]₃ (1.2), through coupling of the ketyl radical species upon crystallization. Reaction of N,N-dimethylbenzamide with U^III [N(SiMe₃ )₂ ]₃ resulted in U^IV [OC⋅(Ph)(NMe₂ )][N(SiMe₃ )₂ ]₃ (2), a uranium(IV) compound and the first example of a charge-separated amide radical. In the case of methyl benzoate, the reduction resulted in U^IV (OMe)[N(SiMe₃ )₂ ]₃ (3) and benzaldehyde as the reduced organic fragment. Compound 2 showed the ability to act as a uranium(III) synthon in its reactivity with trimethylsilyl azide, a reaction that yielded U^V (=NSiMe₃ )[N(SiMe₃ )₂ ]₃ . Additionally, 2 was reduced with potassium graphite resulting in [U(μ-O)[O=C(NMe₂ )(Ph)][N(SiMe₃ )₂ ]₂ ]₂ (4), a dinuclear uranium compound bridged by oxo ligands. Reduction of 2 in the presence of 15-crown-5 afforded isolation of the mono-oxo compound, [(15-crown-5)₂ K][UO[N(SiMe₃ )₂ ]₃ ] (5). The results expand the reduction capabilities of U^III complexes and demonstrate a strategy for isolating novel metal-stabilized radicals.

Controlling uranyl oxo group interactions to group 14 elements using polypyrrolic Schiff-base macrocyclic ligands

Heterodinuclear uranyl/group 14 complexes of the aryl- and anthracenyl-linked Schiff-base macrocyclic ligands L^Me and L^A were synthesised by reaction of UO₂(H₂L) with M{N(SiMe₃)₂}₂ (M = Ge, Sn, Pb). For complexes of the anthracenyl-linked ligand (L^A) the group 14 metal sits out of the N₄-donor plane by up to 0.7 Å resulting in relatively short MOUO distances which decrease down the group; however, the solid state structures and IR spectroscopic analyses suggest little interaction occurs between the oxo and group 14 metal. In contrast, the smaller aryl-linked ligand (L^Me) enforces greater interaction between the metals; only the Pb^II complex was cleanly accessible although this complex was relatively unstable in the presence of HN(SiMe₃)₂ and some organic oxidants. In this case, the equatorial coordination of pyridine-N-oxide causes a 0.08 Å elongation of the endo UO bond and a clear interaction of the uranyl ion with the Pb(ii) cation in the second donor compartment.

Although rare, O_yl–U–O_ylbending in the uranyl (UO₂²⁺) ion can be effected by either steric perturbation or electronic perturbation.

Axially Symmetric U-O-Ln- and U-O-U-Containing Molecules from the Control of Uranyl Reduction with Simple f-Block Halides

The reduction of U^VI uranyl halides or amides with simple Ln^II or U^III salts forms highly symmetric, linear, oxo-bridged trinuclear U^V /Ln^III /U^V , Ln^III /U^IV /Ln^III , and U^IV /U^IV /U^IV complexes or linear Ln^III /U^V polymers depending on the stoichiometry and solvent. The reactions can be tuned to give the products of one- or two-electron uranyl reduction. The reactivity and magnetism of these compounds are discussed in the context of using a series of strongly oxo-coupled homo- and heterometallic poly(f-block) chains to better understand fundamental electronic structure in the f-block.
