Interface control by chemical and dimensional matching in an oxide heterostructure

Long-Range Atomic Order on Double-Stepped Al2O3(0001) Surfaces

The deterministic preparation of highly ordered single-crystalline surfaces is a key step for studying and utilizing the physical properties of various advanced materials. This paper presents the fast and straightforward preparation of vicinal Al2O3(0001) surfaces with micrometer-scale atomic order. Crisp electron-diffraction spots up to at least 20th order evidence atomic coherence on terraces with widths exceeding 1 μm. The unique combination of three properties of Al2O3(0001) underlie this remarkable coherence: its high-temperature stability; the differences in the ionic bonding systems of the surface as compared to the bulk; and the fact that the terraces are non-polar whereas the step edges have a polar character. The step edges are furthermore found to have alternating configurations, which drive a step-doubling transition. On double-stepped surfaces, the Al-rich( 31 × 31 ) R ± 9 $(\sqrt {31}\times \sqrt {31})\textrm {R}\pm 9$ ° surface reconstruction attains a singular in-plane orientation. These results set a benchmark for high-quality surface preparation and thus expand the scope for both fundamental studies on and the technological utilization of exciting material systems.

Deterministic Orientation Control of Ferroelectric HfO2 Thin Film Growth by a Topotactic Phase Transition of an Oxide Electrode

The scale-free ferroelectricity with superior Si compatibility of HfO2 has reawakened the feasibility of scaled-down nonvolatile devices and beyond the complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) architecture based on ferroelectric materials. However, despite the rapid development, fundamental understanding, and control of the metastable ferroelectric phase in terms of oxygen ion movement of HfO2 remain ambiguous. In this study, we have deterministically controlled the orientation of a single-crystalline ferroelectric phase HfO2 thin film via oxygen ion movement. We induced a topotactic phase transition of the metal electrode accompanied by the stabilization of the differently oriented ferroelectric phase HfO2 through the migration of oxygen ions between the oxygen-reactive metal electrode and the HfO2 layer. By stabilizing different polarization directions of HfO2 through oxygen ion migration, we can gain a profound understanding of the oxygen ion-relevant unclear phenomena of ferroelectric HfO2.

Stacking textured films on lattice-mismatched transparent conducting oxides via matched Voronoi cell of oxygen sublattice

Transparent conducting oxides are a critical component in modern (opto)electronic devices and solar energy conversion systems, and forming textured functional films on them is highly desirable for property manipulation and performance optimization. However, technologically important materials show varied crystal structures, making it difficult to establish coherent interfaces and consequently the oriented growth of these materials on transparent conducting oxides. Here, taking lattice-mismatched hexagonal α-Fe2O3 and tetragonal fluorine-doped tin oxide as the example, atomic-level investigations reveal that a coherent ordered structure forms at their interface, and via an oxygen-mediated dimensional and chemical-matching manner, that is, matched Voronoi cells of oxygen sublattices, [110]-oriented α-Fe2O3 films develop on fluorine-doped tin oxide. Further measurements of charge transport characteristics and photoelectronic effects highlight the importance and advantages of coherent interfaces and well-defined orientation in textured α-Fe2O3 films. Textured growth of lattice-mismatched oxides, including spinel Co3O4, fluorite CeO2, perovskite BiFeO3 and even halide perovskite Cs2AgBiBr6, on fluorine-doped tin oxide is also achieved, offering new opportunities to develop high-performance transparent-conducting-oxide-supported devices.

Solution epitaxy of polarization-gradient ferroelectric oxide films with colossal photovoltaic current

Solution growth of single-crystal ferroelectric oxide films has long been pursued for the low-cost development of high-performance electronic and optoelectronic devices. However, the established principles of vapor-phase epitaxy cannot be directly applied to solution epitaxy, as the interactions between the substrates and the grown materials in solution are quite different. Here, we report the successful epitaxy of single-domain ferroelectric oxide films on Nb-doped SrTiO3 single-crystal substrates by solution reaction at a low temperature of ~200 oC. The epitaxy is mainly driven by an electronic polarization screening effect at the interface between the substrates and the as-grown ferroelectric oxide films, which is realized by the electrons from the doped substrates. Atomic-level characterization reveals a nontrivial polarization gradient throughout the films in a long range up to ~500 nm because of a possible structural transition from the monoclinic phase to the tetragonal phase. This polarization gradient generates an extremely high photovoltaic short-circuit current density of ~2.153 mA/cm2 and open-circuit voltage of ~1.15 V under 375 nm light illumination with power intensity of 500 mW/cm2, corresponding to the highest photoresponsivity of ~4.306×10-3 A/W among all known ferroelectrics. Our results establish a general low-temperature solution route to produce single-crystal gradient films of ferroelectric oxides and thus open the avenue for their broad applications in self-powered photo-detectors, photovoltaic and optoelectronic devices.

Interface-Driven Multiferroicity in Cubic BaTiO3-SrTiO3 Nanocomposites

Perovskite multiferroics have drawn significant attention in the development of next-generation multifunctional electronic devices. However, the majority of existing multiferroics exhibit ferroelectric and ferromagnetic orderings only at low temperatures. Although interface engineering in complex oxide thin films has triggered many exotic room-temperature functionalities, the desired coupling of charge, spin, orbital and lattice degrees of freedom often imposes stringent requirements on deposition conditions, layer thickness and crystal orientation, greatly hindering their cost-effective large-scale applications. Herein, we report an interface-driven multiferroicity in low-cost and environmentally friendly bulk polycrystalline material, namely cubic BaTiO₃-SrTiO₃ nanocomposites which were fabricated through a simple, high-throughput solid-state reaction route. Interface reconstruction in the nanocomposites can be readily controlled by the processing conditions. Coexistence of room-temperature ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity, accompanying a robust magnetoelectric coupling in the nanocomposites, was confirmed both experimentally and theoretically. Our study explores the 'hidden treasure at the interface' by creating a playground in bulk perovskite oxides, enabling a broad range of applications that are challenging with thin films, such as low-power-consumption large-volume memory and magneto-optic spatial light modulator.

Interfacial compatibility critically controls Ru/TiO2 metal-support interaction modes in CO2 hydrogenation

Supports can widely affect or even dominate the catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability of metal nanoparticles through various metal-support interactions (MSIs). However, underlying principles have not been fully understood yet, because MSIs are influenced by the composition, size, and facet of both metals and supports. Using Ru/TiO₂ supported on rutile and anatase as model catalysts, we demonstrate that metal-support interfacial compatibility can critically control MSI modes and catalytic performances in CO₂ hydrogenation. Annealing Ru/rutile-TiO₂ in air can enhance CO₂ conversion to methane resulting from enhanced interfacial coupling driven by matched lattices of RuO_x with rutile-TiO₂; annealing Ru/anatase-TiO₂ in air decreases CO₂ conversion and converts the product into CO owing to strong metal-support interaction (SMSI). Although rutile and anatase share the same chemical composition, we show that interfacial compatibility can basically modify metal-support coupling strength, catalyst morphology, surface atomic configuration, MSI mode, and catalytic performances of Ru/TiO₂ in heterogeneous catalysis.

Supports can largely affect the catalytic performance of metal nanoparticles, but the underlying principles are not yet fully understood. Here the authors demonstrate that metal-support interfacial compatibility of Ru/TiO₂ can critically control the metal-support interaction modes and the catalytic performances in CO₂ hydrogenation.

Probing Multiscale Disorder in Pyrochlore and Related Complex Oxides in the Transmission Electron Microscope: A Review

Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and its counterpart, scanning TEM (STEM), are powerful materials characterization tools capable of probing crystal structure, composition, charge distribution, electronic structure, and bonding down to the atomic scale. Recent (S)TEM instrumentation developments such as electron beam aberration-correction as well as faster and more efficient signal detection systems have given rise to new and more powerful experimental methods, some of which (e.g., 4D-STEM, spectrum-imaging, in situ/operando (S)TEM)) facilitate the capture of high-dimensional datasets that contain spatially-resolved structural, spectroscopic, time- and/or stimulus-dependent information across the sub-angstrom to several micrometer length scale. Thus, through the variety of analysis methods available in the modern (S)TEM and its continual development towards high-dimensional data capture, it is well-suited to the challenge of characterizing isometric mixed-metal oxides such as pyrochlores, fluorites, and other complex oxides that reside on a continuum of chemical and spatial ordering. In this review, we present a suite of imaging and diffraction (S)TEM techniques that are uniquely suited to probe the many types, length-scales, and degrees of disorder in complex oxides, with a focus on disorder common to pyrochlores, fluorites and the expansive library of intermediate structures they may adopt. The application of these techniques to various complex oxides will be reviewed to demonstrate their capabilities and limitations in resolving the continuum of structural and chemical ordering in these systems.

Oxidic 2D Materials

The possibility of producing stable thin films, only a few atomic layers thick, from a variety of materials beyond graphene has led to two-dimensional (2D) materials being studied intensively in recent years. By reducing the layer thickness and approaching the crystallographic monolayer limit, a variety of unexpected and technologically relevant property phenomena were observed, which also depend on the subsequent arrangement and possible combination of individual layers to form heterostructures. These properties can be specifically used for the development of multifunctional devices, meeting the requirements of the advancing miniaturization of modern manufacturing technologies and the associated need to stabilize physical states even below critical layer thicknesses of conventional materials in the fields of electronics, magnetism and energy conversion. Differences in the structure of potential two-dimensional materials result in decisive influences on possible growth methods and possibilities for subsequent transfer of the thin films. In this review, we focus on recent advances in the rapidly growing field of two-dimensional materials, highlighting those with oxidic crystal structure like perovskites, garnets and spinels. In addition to a selection of well-established growth techniques and approaches for thin film transfer, we evaluate in detail their application potential as free-standing monolayers, bilayers and multilayers in a wide range of advanced technological applications. Finally, we provide suggestions for future developments of this promising research field in consideration of current challenges regarding scalability and structural stability of ultra-thin films.

Noble-Metal-Free Multicomponent Nanointegration for Sustainable Energy Conversion

Global energy and environmental crises are among the most pressing challenges facing humankind. To overcome these challenges, recent years have seen an upsurge of interest in the development and production of renewable chemical fuels as alternatives to the nonrenewable and high-polluting fossil fuels. Photocatalysis, photoelectrocatalysis, and electrocatalysis provide promising avenues for sustainable energy conversion. Single- and dual-component catalytic systems based on nanomaterials have been intensively studied for decades, but their intrinsic weaknesses hamper their practical applications. Multicomponent nanomaterial-based systems, consisting of three or more components with at least one component in the nanoscale, have recently emerged. The multiple components are integrated together to create synergistic effects and hence overcome the limitation for outperformance. Such higher-efficiency systems based on nanomaterials will potentially bring an additional benefit in balance-of-system costs if they exclude the use of noble metals, considering the expense and sustainability. It is therefore timely to review the research in this field, providing guidance in the development of noble-metal-free multicomponent nanointegration for sustainable energy conversion. In this work, we first recall the fundamentals of catalysis by nanomaterials, multicomponent nanointegration, and reactor configuration for water splitting, CO₂ reduction, and N₂ reduction. We then systematically review and discuss recent advances in multicomponent-based photocatalytic, photoelectrochemical, and electrochemical systems based on nanomaterials. On the basis of these systems, we further laterally evaluate different multicomponent integration strategies and highlight their impacts on catalytic activity, performance stability, and product selectivity. Finally, we provide conclusions and future prospects for multicomponent nanointegration. This work offers comprehensive insights into the development of cost-competitive multicomponent nanomaterial-based systems for sustainable energy-conversion technologies and assists researchers working toward addressing the global challenges in energy and the environment.

Epitaxial antiperovskite/perovskite heterostructures for materials design

Engineered heterostructures formed by complex oxide materials are a rich source of emergent phenomena and technological applications. In the quest for new functionality, a vastly unexplored avenue is interfacing oxide perovskites with materials having dissimilar crystallochemical properties. Here, we propose a unique class of heterointerfaces based on nitride antiperovskite and oxide perovskite materials as a previously unidentified direction for materials design. We demonstrate the fabrication of atomically sharp interfaces between nitride antiperovskite Mn₃GaN and oxide perovskites (La_0.3Sr_0.7)(Al_0.65Ta_0.35)O₃ and SrTiO₃. Using atomic-resolution imaging/spectroscopic techniques and first-principles calculations, we determine the atomic-scale structure, composition, and bonding at the interface. The epitaxial antiperovskite/perovskite heterointerface is mediated by a coherent interfacial monolayer that interpolates between the two antistructures. We anticipate our results to be an important step for the development of functional antiperovskite/perovskite heterostructures, combining their unique characteristics such as topological properties for ultralow-power applications.

Effects of the Heterointerface on the Growth Characteristics of a Brownmillerite SrFeO2.5 Thin Film Grown on SrRuO3 and SrTiO3 Perovskites

Manipulation of the heterointerfacial structure and/or chemistry of transition metal oxides is of great interest for the development of novel properties. However, few studies have focused on heterointerfacial effects on the growth characteristics of oxide thin films, although such interfacial engineering is crucial to determine the growth dynamics and physical properties of oxide heterostructures. Herein, we show that heterointerfacial effects play key roles in determining the growth process of oxide thin films by overcoming the simple epitaxial strain energy. Brownmillerite (SrFeO_2.5; BM-SFO) thin films are epitaxially grown along the b-axis on both SrTiO₃(001) and SrRuO₃/SrTiO₃(001) substrates, whereas growth along the a-axis is expected from conventional epitaxial strain effects originating from lattice mismatch with the substrates. Scanning transmission electron microscopy measurements and first principles calculations reveal that these peculiar growth characteristics of BM-SFO thin films originate from the heterointerfacial effects governed by their distinct interfacial structures. These include octahedral connectivity between dissimilar oxides containing different chemical species and a peculiar transition layer for BM-SFO/SrRuO₃/SrTiO₃(001) and BM-SFO/SrTiO₃(001) heterostructures, respectively. These effects enable subtle control of the growth process of oxide thin films and could facilitate the fabrication of novel functional devices.

Alternate Restacking of 2 D CoNi Hydroxide and Graphene Oxide Nanosheets for Energetic Oxygen Evolution

Morphology and composition tuning of layered materials is evaluated to influence their electrochemical performance for energy storage and conversion applications. Layered Co_1-x Ni_x hydroxides (x=0, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1) of three different morphologies-nanocones, 2 D nanosheets obtained by the rapid exfoliation of nanoconical counterparts, and 2 D superlattice-like nanostructures alternately restacked by the oppositely charged hydroxide and graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets-have been systematically investigated for electrocatalytic oxygen oxidation. High activity is obtained with the 2 D Co_2/3 Ni_1/3 hydroxide nanosheets/GO superlattice (Co_2/3 Ni_1/3 NS-GO), achieving a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 at a low overpotential of 259 mV accompanied by a small Tafel slope of 35.7 mV dec^-1 , surpassing nanocones and 2 D nanosheets, as well as the congeneric heterostructured Co_1-x Ni_x hydroxide nanosheets/GO nanoarchitectures (Co_1-x Ni_x NS-GO; x=0, 1/2, 1/4, 1) and the commercial RuO₂ electrocatalyst. The outstanding activity of Co_2/3 Ni_1/3 NS-GO superlattice uncovers the combined merits of 2 D superlattice-like structure and composition optimization for electrocatalysis, providing a strategy for developing high-performance electrochemical materials by rational morphology and composition design.

Origin of Ferroelectricity in Epitaxial Si-Doped HfO2 Films

HfO₂-based unconventional ferroelectric materials were recently discovered and have attracted a great deal of attention in both academia and industry. The growth of epitaxial Si-doped HfO₂ films has opened up a route to understand the mechanism of ferroelectricity. Here, we used pulsed laser deposition to grow epitaxial Si-doped HfO₂ films in different orientations of N-type SrTiO₃ substrates. Polar nanodomains can be written and read using piezoforce microscopy, and these domains are reversibly switched with a phase change of 180°. Films with different thicknesses displayed a coercive field E_c and a remnant polarization P_r of approximately 4-5 MV/cm and 8-32 μC/cm², respectively. X-ray diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) results identified that the as-grown Si-doped HfO₂ films have strained fluorite structures. The ABAB stacking mode of the Hf atomic grid observed by HRTEM clearly demonstrates that the ferroelectricity originates from the noncentrosymmetric Pca2₁ polar structure. Combined with soft X-ray absorption spectra, the results showed that the Pca2₁ ferroelectric crystal structure manifested as an O sublattice distortion by the effect of the interface strain and Si dopant interactions, resulting in a nanoscaled ferroelectric ordered state because of further crystal splitting.

Electrostatic Force-Driven Oxide Heteroepitaxy for Interface Control

Oxide heterostructure interfaces create a platform to induce intriguing electric and magnetic functionalities for possible future devices. A general approach to control growth and interface structure of oxide heterostructures will offer a great opportunity for understanding and manipulating the functionalities. Here, it is reported that an electrostatic force, originating from a polar ferroelectric surface, can be used to drive oxide heteroepitaxy, giving rise to an atomically sharp and coherent interface by using a low-temperature solution method. These heterostructures adopt a fascinating selective growth, and show a saturation thickness and the reconstructed interface with concentrated charges accumulation. The ferroelectric polarization screening, developing from a solid-liquid interface to the heterostructure interface, is decisive for the specific growth. At the interface, a charge transfer and accumulation take place for electrical compensation. The facile approach presented here can be extremely useful for controlling oxide heteroepitaxy and producing intriguing interface functionality via electrostatic engineering.

Recent Advances in Transmission Electron Microscopy for Materials Science at the EMAT Lab of the University of Antwerp

The rapid progress in materials science that enables the design of materials down to the nanoscale also demands characterization techniques able to analyze the materials down to the same scale, such as transmission electron microscopy. As Belgium's foremost electron microscopy group, among the largest in the world, EMAT is continuously contributing to the development of TEM techniques, such as high-resolution imaging, diffraction, electron tomography, and spectroscopies, with an emphasis on quantification and reproducibility, as well as employing TEM methodology at the highest level to solve real-world materials science problems. The lab's recent contributions are presented here together with specific case studies in order to highlight the usefulness of TEM to the advancement of materials science.

Fabrication of ultralong perovskite structure nanotubes

We elucidate a facile method for the preparation of perovskite manganite nanotubes using a sacrificial template assisted pulsed laser deposition technique.

Melting of Oxygen Vacancy Order at Oxide-Heterostructure Interface

Modifications in oxygen coordination environments in heterostructures consisting of dissimilar oxides often emerge and lead to unusual properties of the constituent materials. Although lots of attention has been paid to slight modifications in the rigid oxygen octahedra of perovskite-based heterointerfaces, revealing the modification behaviors of the oxygen coordination environments in the heterostructures containing oxides with oxygen vacancies have been challenging. Here, we show that a significant modification in the oxygen coordination environments-melting of oxygen vacancy order-is induced at the heterointerface between SrFeO_2.5 (SFO) and DyScO₃ (DSO). When an oxygen-deficient perovskite (brownmillerite structure) SrFeO_2.5 film grows epitaxially on a perovskite DyScO₃ substrate, both FeO₆ octahedra and FeO₄ tetrahedra in the (101)-oriented SrFeO_2.5 thin film connect to ScO₆ octahedra in DyScO₃. As a consequence of accommodating a structural mismatch, the alternately ordered arrangement of oxygen vacancies is significantly disturbed and reconstructed in the 2 nm thick heterointerface region. The stabilized heterointerface structure consists of Fe³⁺ octahedra with an oxygen vacancy disorder. The melting of the oxygen vacancy order, which in bulk SrFeO_2.5 occurs at 1103 K, is induced at the present heterointerface at ambient temperatures.

Crystal growth: an anisotropic mass transfer process at the interface

Mass transfer of growth units towards the interface promotes crystal growth, and the driving force essentially depends on anisotropic chemical bonding architectures.

Highly active and stable interface derived from Pt supported on Ni/Fe layered double oxides for HCHO oxidation

In this work, Ni/Fe layered double oxide supported Pt nanoparticles (Pt/LDO(N)) were prepared using a hydrothermal and colloid-impregnation method. The catalyst exhibited remarkable HCHO oxidation ability and long-time stability.

Critical role of interfacial effects on the reactivity of semiconductor-cocatalyst junctions for photocatalytic oxygen evolution from water

Photocatalytic water splitting has the potential to provide a sustainable approach for storing the energy of solar photons in the form of chemical bonds.
