Biologically templated formation of Cobalt-Phosphide-Graphene hybrids with charge redistribution for efficient hydrogen evolution

Developing highly efficient and sustainable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts is important for the practical application of emerging energy technologies. The spherical structure and phosphorus-rich properties of Chlorella can facilitate the construction of comparable transition metal phosphide electrocatalysts. Here, a microorganism template strategy is proposed to construct a cobalt-phosphide-graphene hybrid. Chlorella can absorb metal ions, and the generated rough spherical nanoparticles are uniformly distributed around the reduced graphene oxide nanosheets. This designed catalyst has comparable HER performance in acidic electrolytes and needs an overpotential of only 153 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2. The experimental and density functional theory results imply that the charge redistribution between Co2P and pyrrole-N is the key factor in enhancing the HER activity. The induced electron aggregation at the N and P sites can serve as a key active site for absorbing the adsorbed hydrogen atom intermediate to accelerate the HER process, contributing to the active sites of Co2P- and pyrrole-N-doped carbon with 0 eV hydrogen adsorption free energy. This work provides a broad idea for synthesizing advanced catalysts by a biological template approach, facilitating the innovative integration of biology and emerging electrochemical energy technologies.

Properties of Multistranded Twisted Graphene Fibers and Their Application in Flexible Light-Emitting Devices

As a typical carbon-based material electrode, graphene fiber exhibits many advantages, such as good electrical conductivity, lightweight, and strong structural designability. Its demand is increasing in the wearable display field. With the help of fine denier fiber spinning combined with multistranded graphene fibers prepared via twisting and drafting, their petal-like twisted structure endows the fibers with a high specific surface area, enabling them to complete dye adsorption within 30 min. Simultaneously, compared with that of a single fiber with the same thickness, the volume specific resistance of a multistranded twisted graphene fiber is reduced by 2.4 times. During force sensing, the twisted structure of multistranded fibers exhibits varying simultaneity of fiber fracture with excellent resistance sensitivity reaching up to 55%. The multistranded twisted flexible graphene fibers demonstrate excellent robustness. Electroluminescent flexible devices prepared with graphene fibers and fiber braided fabrics with different organizational structures as electrodes emit highly saturated short-wave blue light during long-term multiple use. Therefore, multistranded twisted graphene fibers exhibit considerable potential for future applications in wearable multicolor smart displays and flexible optical signal electronics.

Covalently bridging graphene edges for improving mechanical and electrical properties of fibers

Assembling graphene sheets into macroscopic fibers with graphitic layers uniaxially aligned along the fiber axis is of both fundamental and technological importance. However, the optimal performance of graphene-based fibers has been far lower than what is expected based on the properties of individual graphene. Here we show that both mechanical properties and electrical conductivity of graphene-based fibers can be significantly improved if bridges are created between graphene edges through covalent conjugating aromatic amide bonds. The improved electrical conductivity is likely due to extended electron conjugation over the aromatic amide bridged graphene sheets. The larger sheets also result in improved π-π stacking, which, along with the robust aromatic amide linkage, provides high mechanical strength. In our experiments, graphene edges were bridged using the established wet-spinning technique in the presence of an aromatic amine linker, which selectively reacts to carboxyl groups at the graphene edge sites. This technique is already industrial and can be easily upscaled. Our methodology thus paves the way to the fabrication of high-performance macroscopic graphene fibers under optimal techno-economic and ecological conditions.

Ordered mesoporous hairbrush-like nanocarbon assembled microfibers for solid-phase microextraction of benzene series in oilfield sewage

The development of advanced functional nanomaterials for solid-phase microextraction (SPME) remains an imperative aspect of sample pretreatment. Herein, we introduce a novel SPME fiber consisting of graphene fibers modified with ordered mesoporous carbon nanotubes arrays (CNTAs) tailored for the determination of benzene series in oilfield wastewater, which is synthesized by an ionic liquid-assisted wet spinning process of graphene nanosheets, followed by a precisely controlled growth of metal-organic framework and subsequent pyrolysis treatment. The resulting robust microfiber structure resembles a "hairbrush" configuration, with a crumpled graphene fiber "stem" and high-order mesoporous CNTAs "hairs". This unique architecture significantly enhances the SPME capacity, as validated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The hairbrush-like nanocarbon assembled microfibers possess structural characteristics, a high specific surface area, and numerous binding sites, offering efficient enrichment of benzene series compounds in oilfield wastewater, including benzene, ethylbenzene, m-xylene, p-xylene, and toluene. Our analysis demonstrates that these microfibers exhibit broad linear ranges (0.2-600 μg L-1), low detection limits (0.005-0.03 mg L-1), and excellent repeatability (3.2-5.5% for one fiber, 2.1-6.7% for fiber-to-fiber) for detection. When compared to commercial alternatives, these hairbrush-like nanocarbon-assembled microfibers exhibit significantly enhanced extraction efficiency for benzene series compounds.

Scalable Fabrication of Ionic-Conductive Covalent Organic Framework Fibers for Capturing of Sustainable Osmotic Energy

High-performance covalent organic framework (COF) fibers are demanded for an efficient capturing of blue osmotic power because of their excellent durability, simple integration, and large scalability. However, the scalable production of COF fibers is still very challenging due to the poor solubility and fragile structure of COFs. Herein, for the first time, it is reported that COF dispersions can be continuously processed into macroscopic, meter-long, and pure COF fibers using a wet spinning approach. The two presented COF fibers can be directly used for capturing of osmotic energy, avoiding the production of composite materials that require other additives and face challenges such as phase separation and environmental issues induced by the additives. A COF fiber exhibits power densities of 70.2 and 185.3 W m-2 at 50-fold and 500-fold salt gradients, respectively. These values outperform those of most reported systems, which indicate the high potential of COF fibers for capturing of blue osmotic energy.

Chirality Supramolecular Systems: Helical Assemblies, Structure Designs, and Functions

Chirality, as one of the most striking characteristics, exists at various scales in nature. Originating from the interactions of host and guest molecules, supramolecular chirality possesses huge potential in the design of functional materials. Here, an overview of the recent progress in structure designs and functions of chiral supramolecular materials is present. First, three design routes of the chiral supramolecular structure are summarized. Compared with the template-induced and chemical synthesis strategies that depend on accurate molecular identification, the twisted-assembly technique creates chiral materials through the ordered stacking of the nanowire or films. Next, chirality inversion and amplification are reviewed to explain the chirality transfer from the molecular level to the macroscopic scale, where the available external stimuli on the chirality inversion are also given. Lastly, owing to the optical activity and the characteristics of the layer-by-layer stacking structure, the supramolecular chirality materials display various excellent performances, including smart response, shape-memorization, superior mechanical performance, and applications in biomedical fields. To sum up, this work provides a systematic review of the helical assemblies, structure design, and applications of supramolecular chirality systems.

Porous Conductive Textiles for Wearable Electronics

Over the years, researchers have made significant strides in the development of novel flexible/stretchable and conductive materials, enabling the creation of cutting-edge electronic devices for wearable applications. Among these, porous conductive textiles (PCTs) have emerged as an ideal material platform for wearable electronics, owing to their light weight, flexibility, permeability, and wearing comfort. This Review aims to present a comprehensive overview of the progress and state of the art of utilizing PCTs for the design and fabrication of a wide variety of wearable electronic devices and their integrated wearable systems. To begin with, we elucidate how PCTs revolutionize the form factors of wearable electronics. We then discuss the preparation strategies of PCTs, in terms of the raw materials, fabrication processes, and key properties. Afterward, we provide detailed illustrations of how PCTs are used as basic building blocks to design and fabricate a wide variety of intrinsically flexible or stretchable devices, including sensors, actuators, therapeutic devices, energy-harvesting and storage devices, and displays. We further describe the techniques and strategies for wearable electronic systems either by hybridizing conventional off-the-shelf rigid electronic components with PCTs or by integrating multiple fibrous devices made of PCTs. Subsequently, we highlight some important wearable application scenarios in healthcare, sports and training, converging technologies, and professional specialists. At the end of the Review, we discuss the challenges and perspectives on future research directions and give overall conclusions. As the demand for more personalized and interconnected devices continues to grow, PCT-based wearables hold immense potential to redefine the landscape of wearable technology and reshape the way we live, work, and play.

Highly Aligned Graphene Aerogels for Multifunctional Composites

Stemming from the unique in-plane honeycomb lattice structure and the sp2 hybridized carbon atoms bonded by exceptionally strong carbon-carbon bonds, graphene exhibits remarkable anisotropic electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties. To maximize the utilization of graphene's in-plane properties, pre-constructed and aligned structures, such as oriented aerogels, films, and fibers, have been designed. The unique combination of aligned structure, high surface area, excellent electrical conductivity, mechanical stability, thermal conductivity, and porous nature of highly aligned graphene aerogels allows for tailored and enhanced performance in specific directions, enabling advancements in diverse fields. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent advances in highly aligned graphene aerogels and their composites. It highlights the fabrication methods of aligned graphene aerogels and the optimization of alignment which can be estimated both qualitatively and quantitatively. The oriented scaffolds endow graphene aerogels and their composites with anisotropic properties, showing enhanced electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties along the alignment at the sacrifice of the perpendicular direction. This review showcases remarkable properties and applications of aligned graphene aerogels and their composites, such as their suitability for electronics, environmental applications, thermal management, and energy storage. Challenges and potential opportunities are proposed to offer new insights into prospects of this material.

Bidirectionally promoting assembly order for ultrastiff and highly thermally conductive graphene fibres

Macroscopic fibres assembled from two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets are new and impressing type of fibre materials besides those from one-dimensional (1D) polymers, such as graphene fibres. However, the preparation and property-enhancing technologies of these fibres follow those from 1D polymers by improving the orientation along the fibre axis, leading to non-optimized microstructures and low integrated performances. Here, we show a concept of bidirectionally promoting the assembly order, making graphene fibres achieve synergistically improved mechanical and thermal properties. Concentric arrangement of graphene oxide sheets in the cross-section and alignment along fibre axis are realized by multiple shear-flow fields, which bidirectionally promotes the sheet-order of graphene sheets in solid fibres, generates densified and crystalline graphitic structures, and produces graphene fibres with ultrahigh modulus (901 GPa) and thermal conductivity (1660 W m-1 K-1). We believe that the concept would enhance both scientific and technological cognition of the assembly process of 2D nanosheets.

Synergistic effect of graphene oxide/zinc oxide nanocomposites on polylactic acid-based active packaging film: Properties, release kinetics and antimicrobial efficiency

Incorporating two different nanoparticles in nanocomposite films is promising as their synergistic effects could significantly enhance polymer performance. Our previous work conferred the remarkable antimicrobial (AM) properties of the polylactic acid (PLA)-based film using optimal formulations of synergistic graphene oxide (GO)/zinc oxide (ZnO) nanocomposites. This study further explores the release profile of GO/ZnO nanocomposite and their impact on the antimicrobial properties. A fixed 1.11 wt% GO and different ZnO concentrations were well dispersed in the PLA matrix. Increasing ZnO concentrations tended to increase agglomeration, as evident in rougher surfaces. Agglomeration inhibited water penetration, leading to a significant reduction in water permeability (46.3 %), moisture content (31.6 %) but an improvement in Young's Modulus (52.6 %). The overall and specific migration of GO/ZnO nanocomposites was found to be within acceptable limits. It is inferred that the release of Zn2+ ions followed pseudo-Fickian behavior with an initial burst effect. AM film with the highest concentration of ZnO (1.25 wt%) exhibited the highest inhibition rate against Escherichia coli (68.0 %), Bacillus cereus (66.5 %), Saccharomyces cerevisiae (70.9 %). Results suggest that GO/ZnO nanocomposites with optimal ZnO concentrations have the potential to serve as promising antimicrobial food packaging materials, offering enhanced barrier, antimicrobial properties and a controlled release system.

Macroscopic assembly of 2D materials for energy storage and seawater desalination

Since the discovery of graphene in 2004, two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted widespread attention due to their excellent physical and chemical properties in the fields of energy, environment, catalysis, and optoelectronics. However, there are still many key problems in the process of practical application. To further promote the potential of 2D materials for practical applications, macroscopic assembly of 2D materials is crucial for the continued development of 2D materials, especially in the fields of energy storage and seawater desalination. Therefore, this review focuses on the latest progress and current status related to the macroscopic assembly of 2D materials, including 1D fibers, 2D films, and 3D architectures. In addition, the application of macroscopic bodies assembled based on 2D materials in the fields of energy storage and seawater desalination is also introduced. Finally, future directions for the macroscopic assembly of 2D materials and their applications are prospected.

2D Materials Beyond Post-AI Era: Smart Fibers, Soft Robotics, and Single Atom Catalysts

Recent consecutive discoveries of various 2D materials have triggered significant scientific and technological interests owing to their exceptional material properties, originally stemming from 2D confined geometry. Ever-expanding library of 2D materials can provide ideal solutions to critical challenges facing in current technological trend of the fourth industrial revolution. Moreover, chemical modification of 2D materials to customize their physical/chemical properties can satisfy the broad spectrum of different specific requirements across diverse application areas. This review focuses on three particular emerging application areas of 2D materials: smart fibers, soft robotics, and single atom catalysts (SACs), which hold immense potentials for academic and technological advancements in the post-artificial intelligence (AI) era. Smart fibers showcase unconventional functionalities including healthcare/environmental monitoring, energy storage/harvesting, and antipathogenic protection in the forms of wearable fibers and textiles. Soft robotics aligns with future trend to overcome longstanding limitations of hard-material based mechanics by introducing soft actuators and sensors. SACs are widely useful in energy storage/conversion and environmental management, principally contributing to low carbon footprint for sustainable post-AI era. Significance and unique values of 2D materials in these emerging applications are highlighted, where the research group has devoted research efforts for more than a decade.

Scalable microfluidic fabrication of vertically aligned two-dimensional nanosheets for superior thermal management

Two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets have been assembled into various macroscopic structures for wide engineering applications. To fully explore their exceptional thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties, 2D nanosheets must be aligned into highly ordered structures due to their strong structural anisotropy. Structures stacked layer by layer such as films and fibers have been readily assembled from 2D nanosheets due to their planar geometry. However, scalable manufacturing of macroscopic structures with vertically aligned 2D nanosheets remains challenging, given their large lateral size with a thickness of only a few nanometers. Herein, we report a scalable and efficient microfluidics-enabled sheet-aligning process to assemble 2D nanosheets into a large-area film with a highly ordered vertical alignment. By applying microchannels with a high aspect ratio, 2D nanosheets were well aligned vertically under strong channel size confinement and high flow shear stress. A vertically aligned graphene sheet film was obtained and applied to effectively improve the heat transfer of thermal interfacial materials (TIMs). Superior through-plane thermal conductivity of 82.7 W m-1 K-1 at a low graphene content of 11.8 vol% was measured for vertically aligned TIMs. Thus, they demonstrate exceptional thermal management performance for switching power supplies with high reliability.

From Forces to Assemblies: van der Waals Forces-Driven Assemblies in Anisotropic Quasi-2D Graphene and Quasi-1D Nanocellulose Heterointerfaces towards Quasi-3D Nanoarchitecture

In the pursuit of advanced functional materials, the role of low-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) heterointerfaces has recently ignited noteworthy scientific interest, particularly in assemblies that incorporate quasi-2D graphene and quasi-1D nanocellulose derivatives. The growing interest predominantly stems from the potential to fabricate distinct genres of quasi-2D/1D nanoarchitecture governed by vdW forces. Despite the possibilities, the inherent properties of these nanoscale entities are limited by in-plane covalent bonding and the existence of dangling π-bonds, constraints that inhibit emergent behavior at heterointerfaces. An innovative response to these limitations proposes a mechanism that binds multilayered quasi-2D nanosheets with quasi-1D nanochains, capitalizing on out-of-plane non-covalent interactions. The approach facilitates the generation of dangling bond-free iso-surfaces and promotes the functionalization of multilayered materials with exceptional properties. However, a gap still persists in understanding transition and alignment mechanisms in disordered multilayered structures, despite the extensive exploration of monolayer and asymmetric bilayer arrangements. In this perspective, we comprehensively review the sophisticated aspects of multidimensional vdW heterointerfaces composed of quasi-2D/1D graphene and nanocellulose derivatives. Further, we discuss the profound impacts of anisotropy nature and geometric configurations, including in-plane and out-of-plane dynamics on multiscale vdW heterointerfaces. Ultimately, we shed light on the emerging prospects and challenges linked to constructing advanced functional materials in the burgeoning domain of quasi-3D nanoarchitecture.

High Toughness Combined with High Strength in Oxide Ceramic Nanofibers

Traditional oxide ceramics are inherently brittle and highly sensitive to defects, making them vulnerable to failure under external stress. As such, endowing these materials with high strength and high toughness simultaneously is crucial to improve their performance in most safety-critical applications. Fibrillation of the ceramic materials and further refinement of the fiber diameter, as realized by electrospinning, are expected to achieve the transformation from brittleness to flexibility owing to the structural uniqueness. Currently, the synthesis of electrospun oxide ceramic nanofibers must rely on an organic polymer template to regulate the spinnability of the inorganic sol, whose thermal decomposition during ceramization will inevitably lead to pore defects, and seriously weaken the mechanical properties of the final nanofibers. Here, a self-templated electrospinning strategy is proposed for the formation of oxide ceramic nanofibers without adding any organic polymer template. An example is given to show that individual silica nanofibers have an ideally homogeneous, dense, and defect-free structure, with tensile strength as high as 1.41 GPa and toughness up to 34.29 MJ m-3 , both of which are far superior to the counterparts prepared by polymer-templated electrospinning. This work provides a new strategy to develop oxide ceramic materials that are strong and tough.

Experimental probing of dynamic self-organized columnar assemblies in colloidal liquid crystals

Self-organized supramolecular assemblies are widespread in nature and technology in the form of liquid crystals, colloids, and gels. The reversible nature of non-covalent bonding leads to dynamic functions such as stimuli-responsive switching and self-healing, which are unachievable from an isolated molecule. However, multiple intermolecular interactions generate diverse conformational and configurational molecular motions over various time scales in their self-assembled states, and their specific dynamics remains unclear. In the present study, we have experimentally unveiled the static structures and dynamical behaviors in columnar colloidal liquid crystals by a coherent X-ray scattering technique using refined model samples. We have found that controlling the size distribution of the colloidal nanoplates dramatically changed their static and dynamic properties. Furthermore, the resulting dynamical behaviors obtained by X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy have been successfully decomposed into multiple distinct modes, allowing us to explore the dynamical origin in the colloidal liquid-crystalline state. The present approaches using a columnar liquid crystal may contribute to a better understanding of the dynamic nature of molecular assemblies and dense colloidal systems and bring valuable insights into rational design of functional properties of self-assembled materials such as stimuli-responsive liquid crystals, self-healing gels, and colloidal crystals. For these materials, the motion of constituent particles and molecules in the self-assembled state is a key factor for structural formation and dynamically responsive performance.

Green preparation of graphene oxide nanosheets as adsorbent

As a basic building block of graphene-based materials, graphene oxide (GO) plays an important role in scientific research and industrial applications. At present, numerous methods have been employed to synthesize GO, there are still some issues that need to be solved, thus it is of importance to develop a green, safe and low-cost GO preparation method. Herein, a green, safe and fast method was designed to prepare GO, namely, graphite powder was firstly oxidized in a dilute sulfuric acid solution (H₂SO₄, 6 mol/L) with hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂, 30 wt%) as oxidant, and then exfoliated to GO by ultrasonic treatment in water. In this process, H₂O₂ was the only oxidant, and no other oxidants were used, thus the explosive nature of GO preparation reaction in the conventional methods could be completely eliminated. This method has other advantages such as green, fast, low-cost and no Mn-based residues. The experimental results confirm that obtained GO with oxygen-containing groups has better adsorption property compared to the graphite powder. As adsorbent, GO can remove methylene blue (50 mg/L) and Cd²⁺ (56.2 mg/L) from water with removal capacity of 23.8 mg/g and 24.7 mg/g, respectively. It provides a green, fast and low-cost method to prepare GO for some applications such as adsorbent.

Mechanical Properties of Graphene Networks under Compression: A Molecular Dynamics Simulation

Molecular dynamics simulation is used to study and compare the mechanical properties obtained from compression and tension numerical tests of multilayered graphene with an increased interlayer distance. The multilayer graphene with an interlayer distance two-times larger than in graphite is studied first under biaxial compression and then under uniaxial tension along three different axes. The mechanical properties, e.g., the tensile strength and ductility as well as the deformation characteristics due to graphene layer stacking, are studied. The results show that the mechanical properties along different directions are significantly distinguished. Two competitive mechanisms are found both for the compression and tension of multilayer graphene—the crumpling of graphene layers increases the stresses, while the sliding of graphene layers through the surface-to-surface connection lowers it. Multilayer graphene after biaxial compression can sustain high tensile stresses combined with high plasticity. The main outcome of the study of such complex architecture is an important step towards the design of advanced carbon nanomaterials with improved mechanical properties.

Extremely Robust and Multifunctional Nanocomposite Fibers for Strain-Unperturbed Textile Electronics

Textile electronics are needed that can achieve strain-unaltered performance when they undergo irregular and repeated strain deformation. Such strain-unaltered textile electronics require advanced fibers that simultaneously have high functionalities and extreme robustness as fabric materials. Current synthetic nanocomposite fibers based on inorganic matrix have remarkable functionalities but often suffer from low robustness and poor tolerance against crack formation. Here, we present a design for a high-performance multifunctional nanocomposite fiber that is mechanically and electrically robust, which was realized by crosslinking titanium carbide (MXene) nanosheets with a slide-ring polyrotaxane to form an internal mechanically-interlocked network. This inorganic matrix nanocomposite fiber featured distinct strain-hardening mechanical behavior and exceptional load-bearing capability (toughness approaching 60 MJ m^-3 and ductility over 27%). It retained 100% of its ductility after cyclic strain loading. Moreover, the high electrical conductivity (>1.1 × 10⁵ S m^-1 ) and electrochemical performance (>360 F cm^-3 ) of the nanocomposite fiber can be well retained after subjecting the fiber to extensive (>25% strain) and long-term repeated (10 000 cycles) dimensional changes. Such superior robustness allowed for the fabrication of the nanocomposite fibers into various robust wearable devices, such as textile-based electromechanical sensors with strain-unalterable sensing performance and fiber-shaped supercapacitors with invariant electrochemical performance for 10 000 strain loading cycles.

Assessment of graphene-based polymers for sustainable wastewater treatment: Development of a soft computing approach

Since graphene possesses distinct electrical and material properties that could improve material performance, there is currently a growing demand for graphene-based electronics and applications. Numerous potential applications for graphene include lightweight and high-strength polymeric composite materials. Due to its structural qualities, which include low thickness and compact 2D dimensions, it has also been recognized as a promising nanomaterial for water-barrier applications. For barrier polymer applications, it is usually applied using two main strategies. The first is the application of graphene, graphene oxide (GO), and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) to polymeric substrates through transfer or coating. In the second method, fully exfoliated GO or rGO is integrated into the material. This study provides an overview of the most recent findings from research on the use of graphene in the context of water-barrier applications. The advantages and current limits of graphene-based composites are compared with those of other nanomaterials utilized for barrier purposes in order to emphasize difficult challenges for future study and prospective applications.

Effect of Pretreatment Conditions on the Precise Nanoporosity of Graphene Oxide

Nanoscale pores in graphene oxide (GO) control various important functions. The nanoporosity of GO is sensitive to low-temperature heating. Therefore, it is important to carefully process GO and GO-based materials to achieve superior functions. Optimum pretreatment conditions, such as the pre-evacuation temperature and time, are important during gas adsorption in GO to obtain accurate pore structure information. This study demonstrated that the pre-evacuation temperature and time for gas adsorption in GO must be approximately 333-353 K and 4 h, respectively, to avoid the irreversible alteration of nanoporosity. In situ temperature-dependent Fourier-transform infrared spectra and thermogravimetric analysis-mass spectrometry suggested significant structural changes in GO above the pre-evacuation temperature (353 K) through the desorption of "physically adsorbed water" and decomposition of unstable surface functional groups. The nanoporosity of GO significantly changed above the aforementioned pre-evacuation temperature and time. Thus, standard pretreatment is indispensable for understanding the intrinsic interface properties of GO.

Self-Assembly of a Graphene Oxide Liquid Crystal for Water Treatment

Adsorbents, especially those with high removal efficiency, long life, and multi-purpose capabilities, are the most crucial components in an adsorption system. By taking advantage of the liquid-like mobility and crystal-like ordering of liquid crystal materials, a liquid crystal induction method is developed and applied to construct three-dimensional graphene-based adsorbents featuring excellent shape adaptability, a distinctive pore structure, and abundant surface functional groups. When the monoliths are used for water restoration, the large amount of residual oxygen-containing groups is more susceptible to electrophilic attack, thus contributing to cation adsorption (up to 705.4 mg g^-1 for methylene blue), while the connected microvoids between the aligned graphene oxide sheets facilitate mass transfer, e.g., the high adsorption capacity for organic pollutants (196.2 g g^-1 for ethylene glycol) and the high evaporation rate for water (4.01 kg m^-2 h^-1). This work gives a practical method for producing high-performance graphene-based functional materials for those applications that are sensitive to surface and mass transfer properties.

In Situ Regulation of Microphase Separation-Recognized Circularly Polarized Luminescence via Photoexcitation-Induced Molecular Aggregation

Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) has attracted great interest owing to its extensive optical information and chiral structural dependence. However, rationally regulating solid-phase CPL signals remains difficult because of the close packing of molecules in solid-state materials and the lack of structural visualization. In this work, we proposed a microphase-separation-recognized CPL regulation strategy via coassembly of a hexathiobenzene-based luminophore and chiral block copolymer (cBCP) with in situ photocontrollability. As a consequence to the continuous increase in the luminophore-to-cBCP ratio, the CPL signal of the supramolecular system exhibited an increasing trend until a critical point. Then, further increasing the ratio stretched the helical pitch of cBCP, which led to CPL reduction. With the photoexcitation-induced molecular aggregation of the luminophore, which was implemented using in situ photoirradiation, the helical pitch was retracted along with the restoration of the CPL signal. These processes were fully recognized and monitored by the microphase-separated nanomorphological change of the coassembled system, which indicated that such a structural contrast could be an effective method for rationally regulating the supramolecular chiropticity of solid-state materials.

Ultrastrong Hybrid Fibers with Tunable Macromolecular Interfaces of Graphene Oxide and Carbon Nanotube for Multifunctional Applications

Individual carbon nanotubes (CNT) and graphene have unique mechanical and electrical properties; however, the properties of their macroscopic assemblies have not met expectations because of limited physical dimensions, the limited degree of dispersion of the components, and various structural defects. Here, a state-of-the-art assembly for a novel type of hybrid fiber possessing the properties required for a wide variety of multifunctional applications is presented. A simple and effective multidimensional nanostructure of CNT and graphene oxide (GO) assembled by solution processing improves the interfacial utilization of the components. Flexible GOs are effectively intercalated between nanotubes along the shape of CNTs, which reduces voids, enhances orientation, and maximizes the contact between elements. The microstructure is finely controlled by the elements content ratio and dimensions, and an optimal balance improves the mechanical properties. The hybrid fibers simultaneously exhibit exceptional strength (6.05 GPa), modulus (422 GPa), toughness (76.8 J g^-1 ), electrical conductivity (8.43 MS m^-1 ), and knot strength efficiency (92%). Furthermore, surface and electrochemical properties are significantly improved by tuning the GO content, further expanding the scope of applications. These hybrid fibers are expected to offer a strategy for overcoming the limitations of existing fibers in meeting the requirements for applications in the fiber industry.

Nanoscale Kevlar Liquid Crystal Aerogel Fibers

Aerogel fibers, the simultaneous embodiment of aerogel porous network and fiber slender geometry, have shown critical advantages over natural and synthetic fibers in thermal insulation. However, how to control the building block orientation degree of the resulting aerogel fibers during the dynamic sol-gel transition process to expand their functions for emerging applications is a great challenge. Herein, nanoscale Kevlar liquid crystal (NKLC) aerogel fibers with different building block orientation degrees have been fabricated from Kevlar nanofibers via liquid crystal spinning, dynamic sol-gel transition, freeze-drying, and cold plasma hydrophobilization in sequence. The resulting NKLC aerogel fibers demonstrate extremely high mechanical strength (41.0 MPa), excellent thermal insulation (0.037 W·m^-1·K^-1), and self-cleaning performance (with a water contact angle of 154°). The superhydrophobic NKLC aerogel fibers can cyclically transform between aerogel and gel states, while gel fibers involving different building block orientation degrees display distinguishable brightness under polarized light. Based on these performances, digital textiles woven or embroidered with high- and low-orientated NKLC aerogel fibers enable up to 6.0 Gb information encryption in one square meter and on-demand decryption. Therefore, it can be envisioned that the tuning of the building blocks' orientation degree will be an appropriate strategy to endow performance to the liquid crystal aerogel fibers for potential applications beyond thermal insulation.

Liquid-crystalline behavior on dumbbell-shaped colloids and the observation of chiral blue phases

Colloidal liquid crystals are an emerging class of soft materials that naturally combine the unique properties of both liquid crystal molecules and colloidal particles. Chiral liquid crystal blue phases are attractive for use in fast optical displays and electrooptical devices, but the construction of blue phases is limited to a few chiral building blocks and the formation of blue phases from achiral ones is often counterintuitive. Herein we demonstrate that achiral dumbbell-shaped colloids can assemble into a rich variety of characteristic liquid crystal phases, including nematic phases with lock structures, smectic phase, and particularly experimental observation of blue phase III with double-twisted chiral columns. Phase diagrams from experiments and simulations show that the existence and stable regions of different liquid crystal phases are strongly dependent on the geometrical parameters of dumbbell-shaped colloids. This work paves a new route to the design and construction of blue phases for photonic applications.

Dynamic light scattering analysis of size-selected graphene oxide 2D colloids fractioned via liquid crystal phase separation

Exfoliated platelets of graphene oxide (GO) can be considered as polydisperse 2D colloids that form nematic colloidal liquid crystal phases in aqueous suspension even at very low concentrations thanks to their extremely high aspect ratios. However, with the rapidly emerging scientific interest in these GO-based liquid crystals, it became clear that the precise analysis and control of the GO sheet size distribution is essential, both for their scientific understanding and for potential applications, e.g., in optoelectronic devices, nanocomposites, or catalysis. In this work, we show that the mean effective (hydrodynamic) GO platelet width can be determined from the translational diffusion coefficient with depolarized dynamic light scattering by using a model for circular, infinitely thin disks. We further studied the phase separation process of biphasic isotropic-nematic GO dispersions and developed a simple fractionation protocol, which can be used to prepare relatively monodisperse fractions of GO sheets with widths ranging from 2.0-12.4 μm. Overall, we expect that the combined application of these relatively simple fractionation and analysis methods will advance the fabrication of well-defined and size-selected GO-based systems.

Multiresponsive Polymer Nanocomposite Liquid Crystals Having Heterogeneous Phase Transitions for Battery-Free Temperature Maintenance Indicators

Multiresponsive functional materials that respond to more than one external stimulus are promising for novel photonic, electronic, and biomedical applications. However, the design or synthesis of new multiresponsive materials is challenging. Here, this work reports a facile method to prepare a multiresponsive colloidal material by mixing a liquid-crystalline 2D nanocolloid and a functional polymer colloid. For this purpose, electrically sensitive exfoliated α-ZrP 2D nanocolloids and thermosensitive block copolymer colloids that are dispersed well in water are mixed. In the liquid-crystalline nanocomposite, nematic, antinematic, or isotropic assemblies of α-ZrP, nanoparticles can be electrically and selectively obtained by applying electric fields with different frequencies; furthermore, their rheology is thermally and reversibly controlled through thesol-gel-sol transition. The nanocomposite exhibits a solid gel phase within a predesigned gel temperature range and a liquid sol phase outside this range. These properties facilitate the design of a simple display device in which information can be electrically written and thermally stabilized or erased, and using the device, a battery-free temperature maintenance indication function is demonstrated. The proposed polymer nanocomposite method can enrich the physical properties of 2D nanocolloidal liquid crystals and create new opportunities for eco-friendly, reusable, battery-free electro-optical devices.

The Anticancer Efficacy of Thiourea-Mediated Reduced Graphene Oxide Nanosheets against Human Colon Cancer Cells (HT-29)

The current research focuses on the fabrication of water-soluble, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) employing thiourea (T) using a simple cost-effective method, and subsequently examining its anticancer characteristics. The cytotoxicity caused by graphene oxide (GO) and T-rGO is investigated in detail. Biological results reveal a concentration-dependent toxicity of GO and T-rGO in human colon cancer cells HT-29. A decrease in cell viability alongside DNA fragmentation is observed. Flow cytometry analysis confirms the cytotoxic effects. The novelty in this work is the use of raw graphite powder, and oxidants such as KMNO₄, NaNO₃, and 98 percent H₂SO₄ to produce graphene oxide by a modified Hummers method. This study demonstrates a simple and affordable procedure for utilising thiourea to fabricate a water-soluble reduced graphene oxide, which will be useful in a variety of biomedical applications.

Carbonene Fibers: Toward Next-Generation Fiber Materials

The development of human society has set unprecedented demands for advanced fiber materials, such as lightweight and high-performance fibers for reinforcement of composite materials in frontier fields and functional and intelligent fibers in wearable electronics. Carbonene materials composed of sp²-hybridized carbon atoms have been demonstrated to be ideal building blocks for advanced fiber materials, which are referred to as carbonene fibers. Carbonene fibers that generally include pristine carbonene fibers, composite carbonene fibers, and carbonene-modified fibers hold great promise in transferring the extraordinary properties of nanoscale carbonene materials to macroscopic applications. Herein, we give a comprehensive discussion on the conception, classification, and design strategies of carbonene fibers and then summarize recent progress regarding the preparations and applications of carbonene fibers. Finally, we provide insights into developing lightweight, high-performance, functional, and intelligent carbonene fibers for next-generation fiber materials in the near future.

Efficient Preconstruction of Three-Dimensional Graphene Networks for Thermally Conductive Polymer Composites

Electronic devices generate heat during operation and require efficient thermal management to extend the lifetime and prevent performance degradation. Featured by its exceptional thermal conductivity, graphene is an ideal functional filler for fabricating thermally conductive polymer composites to provide efficient thermal management. Extensive studies have been focusing on constructing graphene networks in polymer composites to achieve high thermal conductivities. Compared with conventional composite fabrications by directly mixing graphene with polymers, preconstruction of three-dimensional graphene networks followed by backfilling polymers represents a promising way to produce composites with higher performances, enabling high manufacturing flexibility and controllability. In this review, we first summarize the factors that affect thermal conductivity of graphene composites and strategies for fabricating highly thermally conductive graphene/polymer composites. Subsequently, we give the reasoning behind using preconstructed three-dimensional graphene networks for fabricating thermally conductive polymer composites and highlight their potential applications. Finally, our insight into the existing bottlenecks and opportunities is provided for developing preconstructed porous architectures of graphene and their thermally conductive composites.

Advances in High-Performance Autonomous Energy and Self-Powered Sensing Textiles with Novel 3D Fabric Structures

The seamless integration of emerging triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) technology with traditional wearable textile materials has given birth to the next-generation smart textiles, i.e., textile TENGs, which will play a vital role in the era of Internet of Things and artificial intelligences. However, low output power and inferior sensing ability have largely limited the development of textile TENGs. Among various approaches to improve the output and sensing performance, such as material modification, structural design, and environmental management, a 3D fabric structural scheme is a facile, efficient, controllable, and scalable strategy to increase the effective contact area for contact electrification of textile TENGs without cumbersome material processing and service area restrictions. Herein, the recent advances of the current reported textile TENGs with 3D fabric structures are comprehensively summarized and systematically analyzed in order to clarify their superiorities over 1D fiber and 2D fabric structures in terms of power output and pressure sensing. The forward-looking integration abilities of the 3D fabrics are also discussed at the end. It is believed that the overview and analysis of textile TENGs with distinctive 3D fabric structures will contribute to the development and realization of high-power output micro/nanowearable power sources and high-quality self-powered wearable sensors.

High-Strength Liquid Crystal Polymer-Graphene Oxide Nanocomposites from Water

We report on the morphology and mechanical properties of nanocomposite films derived from aqueous, hybrid liquid crystalline mixtures of rodlike aggregates of a sulfonated, all-aromatic polyamide, poly(2,2'-disulfonyl-4,4'-benzidine terephthalamide) (PBDT), and graphene oxide (GO) platelets. An isothermal step at 200 °C facilitates in situ partial thermal reduction of GO to reduced GO (rGO) in nanocomposite films. X-ray scattering studies reveal that PBDT-rGO nanocomposites exhibit both higher in-plane alignment of PBDT (the order parameter increases from 0.79 to 0.9 at 1.8 vol % rGO) and alignment along the casting direction (from 0.1 to 0.6 at 1.8 vol % rGO). From dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, the interaction between PBDT and rGO causes the β-relaxation activation energy for PBDT to increase with rGO concentration. Modulus mapping of nanocomposites using atomic force microscopy demonstrates enhanced local stiffness, indicating reinforcement. From stress-strain analysis, the average Young's modulus increases from 16 to 37 GPa at 1.8 vol % rGO and the average tensile strength increases from 210 to 640 MPa. Despite polymer alignment along the casting direction, an average transverse tensile strength of 230 MPa is obtained.

Highly Anisotropic Thermal Conductivity of Three-Dimensional Printed Boron Nitride-Filled Thermoplastic Polyurethane Composites: Effects of Size, Orientation, Viscosity, and Voids

Extrusion-based three-dimensional (3D) printing techniques usually exhibit anisotropic thermal, mechanical, and electric properties due to the shearing-induced alignment during extrusion. However, the transformation from the extrusion to stacking process is always neglected and its influence on the final properties remains ambiguous. In this work, we adopt two different sized boron nitride (BN) sheets, namely, small-sized BN (S-BN) and large-sized BN (L-BN), to explore their impact on the orientation degree, morphology, and final anisotropic thermal conductivity (TC) of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) composites by fused deposition modeling. The transformation from one-dimensional axial alignment in the extruded filament to two-dimensional alignment (horizontal and vertical alignment) in the stacking filament of BN sheets is observed, and its impact on anisotropic TC in three directions is clarified. It is found that L-BN/TPU composites show a high TC of 6.45 W m^-1 K^-1 at 60 wt % BN content along the printing direction, while at a lower content (<40 wt %), S-BN/TPU composites exhibit a higher TC than L-BN/TPU composites. Effects of orientation, viscosity, and voids are comprehensively considered to elucidate such differences. Finally, heat dissipation tests demonstrate the great potential of 3D printed BN/TPU composites to be used in thermal management applications.

Molecular-Level Lubrication Effect of 0D Nanodiamonds for Highly Bendable Graphene Liquid Crystalline Fibers

Graphene fiber is emerging as a new class of carbon-based fiber with distinctive material properties particularly useful for electroconductive components for wearable devices. Presently, stretchable and bendable graphene fibers are principally employing soft dielectric additives, such as polymers, which can significantly deteriorate the genuine electrical properties of pristine graphene-based structures. We report molecular-level lubricating nanodiamonds as an effective physical property modifier to improve the mechanical flexibility of graphene fibers by relieving the tight interlayer stacking among graphene sheets. Nanoscale-sized NDs effectively increase the tensile strain and bending strain of graphene/nanodiamond composite fibers while maintaining the genuine electrical conductivity of pristine graphene-based fibers. The molecular-level lubricating mechanism is elucidated by friction force microscopy on the nanoscale as well as by shear stress measurement on the macroscopic scale. The resultant highly bendable graphene/nanodiamond composite fiber is successfully weaved into all graphene fiber-based textiles and wearable Joule heaters, proposing the potential for reliable wearable applications.

Long-Term Aging of Concentrated Aqueous Graphene Oxide Suspensions Seen by Rheology and Raman Spectroscopy

Today, graphene oxide (GO) has gained well-deserved recognition, with its applications continuing to increase. Much of the processing of GO-based devices occurs in a dispersed form, which explains the commercialization of GO suspensions. Aging of these suspensions can, however, affect the shelf life and thus their application potential. Aging of GO preparations is often acknowledged, but no longer-term systematic study has been reported on the alteration of GO suspensions. This paper investigates high-concentration (10 mg/mL) aqueous GO suspensions over a 2-year time scale. In addition to steady shear tests, the dynamic behavior of the suspensions was studied in more detail by transient shear and frequency sweep measurements. Both the viscosity and the dynamic moduli increased with age, particularly within the first year. The results of the complementary Raman spectroscopic studies indicate that the change in the rheological behavior with aging results from a slow oxidation process occurring in the highly acidic aqueous medium during the relatively long-term storage. The (over)oxidized layers peel off spontaneously or are removed by high shear stress, resulting in increased viscosity, as it was corroborated by XRD and XPS.

Stable graphene oxide hydrophobic photonic liquids

Graphene oxide (GO) is an important nanomaterial for producing photonic liquids due to its ability to display full-color reflections in water. However, the poor stability of GO photonic liquids and unsatisfactory dispersibility of GO nanosheets in hydrophobic liquid media have been significant drawbacks to developing photonic materials based on GO. Here, stable GO hydrophobic photonic liquids are demonstrated for the first time. GO nanosheets are directed into different hydrophobic liquid media, including reactive liquid precursors like tetraethoxysilane and ethyl acrylate, in the presence of phase transfer additives. These liquids exhibit tunable reflection wavelength up to ∼1300 nm with improved stability relative to aqueous GO photonic suspensions at elevated temperatures or under ambient conditions. Supported by an entropy-driven depletion mechanism, hydrophobic additives can effectively mediate the self-assembly of GO to produce tunable photonic liquids without the need to adjust GO concentrations. Furthermore, simultaneous infrared and visible light reflection can be achieved, enabling infrared photonic GO liquids to display visible colors. The improved stability and tunable photonic properties of hydrophobic GO liquids will open a way for developing GO-based optical materials and devices.

Controllable assembly of continuous hollow graphene fibers with robust mechanical performance and multifunctionalities

Macroscopic conformation of individual graphene sheets serves as the backbone of translating their intrinsic merits towards multifunctional practical applications. However, controllable and continuous assemblies of graphene-based nanomaterials to create stable macroscopic structural components are always in face of great challenge. We have developed a scalable converging-flow assisted wet-spinning methodology for continuously fabricating hollow graphene fibers (HGFs, the newest variation of solid graphene fibers) with high quality. The degradable silk thread is selectively utilized as the continuous hollow structure former that holds the coaxially stacked graphene sheets aligned through the converging-flow modulating process. For the first time, we have created the longest freestanding HGF in length of 2.1 m. The continuous HGFs are in an average diameter of 180μm and with 4-8μm adjustable wall thicknesses. The optimal HGF demonstrates an average tensile strength of 300 MPa and modulus of 2.49 GPa (comparable to typical solid graphene fibers, but the highest among the reported HGFs in literature) and an exceptional failure elongation of 10.8%. Additionally, our continuous HGFs exhibit spontaneous resistive response to thermal and strain stimuli (in form of large deformations and human motions), offering great potential for developing multifunctional sensors. We envision that this work demonstrates an effective and well-controlled macroscopic assembly methodology for the scaled-up mass production of HGFs.

Spectroscopic and in vitro investigations of Fe2+/α-Ketoglutarate-dependent enzymes involved in nucleic acid repair and modification

The activation of molecular oxygen for the highly selective functionalization and repair of DNA and RNA nucleobases is achieved by α-ketoglutarate (α-KG)/iron-dependent dioxygenases. Enzymes of special interest are the human homologs AlkBH of Escherichia coli EcAlkB and ten-eleven translocation (TET) enzymes. These enzymes are involved in demethylation or dealkylation of DNA and RNA, although additional physiological functions are continuously being revealed. Given their importance, studying enzyme-substrate interactions, turnover and kinetic parameters is pivotal for the understanding of the mode of action of these enzymes. Diverse analytical methods, including X-ray crystallography, UV/Vis absorption, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), circular dichroism (CD) and NMR spectroscopy have been employed to study the changes in the active site and the overall enzyme structure upon substrate, cofactor and inhibitor addition. Several methods are now available to assess activity of these enzymes. By discussing limitations and possibilities of these techniques for EcAlkB, AlkBH and TET we aim to give a comprehensive synopsis from a bioinorganic point of view, addressing researchers from different disciplines working in the highly interdisciplinary and rapidly evolving field of epigenetic processes and DNA/RNA repair and modification.

A facile ultrasensitive detection of MC-LR toxin via a real-time assembled aptasensor of plasmonic graphene oxide

Real time controllable assembling/aptasensing approach via plasmonic graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposites has been firstly proven to simultaneously give tuning of micro-nano structure of plasmonic GO and ultrasensitive detection of MC-LR toxin. In order to fabricate the assembly, a high-quality hollow triangular nanoplate AgClAu:p-GO (HTNP AgClAu:p-GO) can act as a template; furthermore, we combine DNA-hybridization with biotin-strepavidin binding protocol for tuning the HTNP AgClAu:p-GO assemblies from networks to laminar structure, and simultaneously loading Raman reporters into the assemblies. The dynamic assembling process can be utilized as a real time SERS aptasensor for detecting MC-LR due to ratiometric introduction of MC-LR toxin inhibiting formation of plasmonic p-GO assembly via toxin/aptamer bioconjugation and causing reverse alteration of SERS signal for giving ultrasensitive SERS detection of MC-LR. A detection limit of 6.3pM with a wide linear range from 10pM to 5 nM can be achieved. When the aptasensor has been applied in real samples, the real time assembling/aptasensing approach shows recoveries from 98% to 103% with relative standard deviation (RSD) lower than 3%, expecting that one-step nanofabrication and sensing strategy can be extended to in-field test of environmental contaminants.

Effect of the Structure Morphology on the Mechanical Properties of Crumpled Graphene Fiber

Crumpled graphene fiber is a promising structure to be a graphene precursor to enhance the production and mechanical properties of various carbon fibers. The primary goal of the present work is to study the crumpled graphene of different morphologies using molecular dynamics simulations to find the effect of the structural peculiarities on the mechanical properties, such as the tensile strength, elastic modulus, and deformation characteristics. Mono- and poly-disperse structures are considered under uniaxial tension along two different axes. As it is found, both structures are isotropic and stress–strain curves for tension along different directions are very similar. Young’s modulus of crumpled graphene is close, about 50 and 80 GPa; however, the strength of the polydisperse structure is bigger at the elastic regime. While a monodisperse structure can in-elastically deform until high tensile strength of 90 GPa, structure analysis showed that polydisperse crumpled graphene fiber pores appeared two times faster than the monodisperse ones.

Precise Thermoplastic Processing of Graphene Oxide Layered Solid by Polymer Intercalation

The processing capability is vital for the wide applications of materials to forge structures as-demand. Graphene-based macroscopic materials have shown excellent mechanical and functional properties. However, different from usual polymers and metals, graphene solids exhibit limited deformability and processibility for precise forming. Here, we present a precise thermoplastic forming of graphene materials by polymer intercalation from graphene oxide (GO) precursor. The intercalated polymer enables the thermoplasticity of GO solids by thermally activated motion of polymer chains. We detect a critical minimum containing of intercalated polymer that can expand the interlayer spacing exceeding 1.4 nm to activate thermoplasticity, which becomes the criteria for thermal plastic forming of GO solids. By thermoplastic forming, the flat GO-composite films are forged to Gaussian curved shapes and imprinted to have surface relief patterns with size precision down to 360 nm. The plastic-formed structures maintain the structural integration with outstanding electrical (3.07 × 10⁵ S m^-1) and thermal conductivity (745.65 W m^-1 K^-1) after removal of polymers. The thermoplastic strategy greatly extends the forming capability of GO materials and other layered materials and promises versatile structural designs for more broad applications.

Multifunctional Macroassembled Graphene Nanofilms with High Crystallinity

A "cooling-contraction" method to separate large-area (up to 4.2 cm in lateral size) graphene oxide (GO)-assembled films (of nanoscale thickness) from substrates is reported. Heat treatment at 3000 °C of such free-standing macroscale films yields highly crystalline "macroassembled graphene nanofilms" (nMAGs) with 16-48 nm thickness. These nMAGs present tensile strength of 5.5-11.3 GPa (with ≈3 µm gauge length), electrical conductivity of 1.8-2.1 MS m^-1 , thermal conductivity of 2027-2820 W m^-1 K^-1 , and carrier relaxation time up to ≈23 ps. As a demonstration application, an nMAG-based sound-generator shows a 30 µs response and sound pressure level of 89 dB at 1 W cm^-2 . A THz metasurface fabricated from nMAG has a light response of 8.2% for 0.159 W mm^-2 and can detect down to 0.01 ppm of glucose. The approach provides a straightforward way to form highly crystallized graphene nanofilms from low-cost GO sheets.

Lethal Interactions of SARS-CoV-2 with Graphene Oxide: Implications for COVID-19 Treatment

The rapid transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-driven infection signifies an ultimate challenge to global health, and the development of effective strategies for preventing and/or mitigating its effects are of the utmost importance. In the current study, an in-depth investigation for the understanding of the SARS-CoV-2 inactivation route using graphene oxide (GO) is presented. We focus on the antiviral effect of GO nanosheets on three SARS-CoV-2 strains: Wuhan, B.1.1.7 (U.K. variant), and P.1 (Brazilian variant). Plaque assay and real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) showed that 50 and 98% of the virus in a supernatant could be cleared following incubation with GO (100 μg/mL) for 1 and 60 min, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis and protein (spike (S) and nucleocapsid (N) proteins) decomposition evaluation confirm a two-step virus inactivation mechanism that includes (i) adsorption of the positively charged spike of SARS-CoV-2 on the negatively charged GO surface and (ii) neutralization/inactivation of the SARS-CoV-2 on the surface of GO through decomposition of the viral protein. As the interaction of S protein with human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) is required for SARS-CoV-2 to enter into human cells, the damage to the S protein using GO makes it a potential candidate for use in contributing to the inhibition of the worldwide spread of SARS-CoV-2. Specifically, our findings provide the potential for the construction of an effective anti-SARS-CoV-2 face mask using a GO nanosheet, which could contribute greatly to preventing the spread of the virus. In addition, as the effect of surface contamination can be severe in the spreading of SARS-CoV-2, the development of efficient anti-SARS-CoV-2 protective surfaces/coatings based on GO nanosheets could play a significant role in controlling the spread of the virus through the utilization of GO-based nonwoven cloths, filters, and so on.
