Strain Engineering of Ion-Coordinated Nanochannels in Nanocellulose

Expanding the interlayer spacing plays a significant role in improving the conductivity of a cellulose-based conductor. However, it remains a challenge to regulate the cellulose nanochannel expanded by ion coordination. Herein, starting from multiscale mechanics, we proposed a strain engineering method to regulate the interlayer spacing of the cellulose nanochannels. First-principles calculations were conducted to select the most suitable ions for coordination. Large-scale molecular dynamics simulations were performed to reveal the mechanism of interlayer spacing expansion by the ion cross-linking. Combining the shear-lag model, we established the relationship between interfacial cross-link density and interlayer spacing of an ion-coordinated cellulose nanochannel. Consequently, fast ion transport and current regulation were realized via the strain engineering of nanochannels, which provides a promising strategy for the current regulation of a cellulose-based conductor.

Tuning instability in suspended monolayer 2D materials

Monolayer two-dimensional (2D) materials possess excellent in-plane mechanical strength yet extremely low bending stiffness, making them particularly susceptible to instability, which is anticipated to have a substantial impact on their physical functionalities such as 2D-based Micro/Nanoelectromechanical systems (M/NEMS), nanochannels, and proton transport membrane. In this work, we achieve quantitatively tuning instability in suspended 2D materials including monolayer graphene and MoS2 by employing a push-to-shear strategy. We comprehensively examine the dynamic wrinkling-splitting-smoothing process and find that monolayer 2D materials experience stepwise instabilities along with different recovery processes. These stepwise instabilities are governed by the materials' geometry, pretension, and the elastic nonlinearity. We attribute the different instability and recovery paths to the local stress redistribution in monolayer 2D materials. The tunable instability behavior of suspended monolayer 2D materials not only allows measuring their bending stiffness but also opens up new opportunities for programming the nanoscale instability pattern and even physical properties of atomically thin films.

Near-room-temperature water-mediated densification of bulk van der Waals materials from their nanosheets

The conventional fabrication of bulk van der Waals (vdW) materials requires a temperature above 1,000 °C to sinter from the corresponding particulates. Here we report the near-room-temperature densification (for example, ∼45 °C for 10 min) of two-dimensional nanosheets to form strong bulk materials with a porosity of <0.1%, which are mechanically stronger than the conventionally made ones. The mechanistic study shows that the water-mediated activation of van der Waals interactions accounts for the strong and dense bulk materials. Initially, water adsorbed on two-dimensional nanosheets lubricates and promotes alignment. The subsequent extrusion closes the gaps between the aligned nanosheets and densifies them into strong bulk materials. Water extrusion also generates stresses that increase with moulding temperature, and too high a temperature causes intersheet misalignment; therefore, a near-room-temperature moulding process is favoured. This technique provides an energy-efficient alternative to design a wide range of dense bulk van der Waals materials with tailored compositions and properties.

Anisotropic Fracture of Two-Dimensional Ta2NiSe5

Anisotropic two-dimensional materials present a diverse range of physical characteristics, making them well-suited for applications in photonics and optoelectronics. While mechanical properties play a crucial role in determining the reliability and efficacy of 2D material-based devices, the fracture behavior of anisotropic 2D crystals remains relatively unexplored. Toward this end, we herein present the first measurement of the anisotropic fracture toughness of 2D Ta2NiSe5 by microelectromechanical system-based tensile tests. Our findings reveal a significant in-plane anisotropic ratio (∼3.0), accounting for crystal orientation-dependent crack paths. As the thickness increases, we observe an intriguing intraplanar-to-interplanar transition of fracture along the a-axis, manifesting as stepwise crack features attributed to interlayer slippage. In contrast, ruptures along the c-axis surprisingly exhibit persistent straightness and smoothness regardless of thickness, owing to the robust interlayer shear resistance. Our work affords a promising avenue for the construction of future electronics based on nanoribbons with atomically sharp edges.

Hierarchical and reconfigurable interfibrous interface of bioinspired Bouligand structure enabled by moderate orderliness

Introducing natural Bouligand structure into synthetics is expected to develop high-performance structural materials. Interfibrous interface is critical to load transfer, and mechanical functionality of bioinspired Bouligand structure yet receives little attention. Here, we propose one kind of hierarchical and reconfigurable interfibrous interface based on moderate orderliness to mechanically reinforce bioinspired Bouligand structure. The interface imparted by moderate alignment of adaptable networked nanofibers hierarchically includes nanofiber interlocking and hydrogen-bonding (HB) network bridging, being expected to facilitate load transfer and structural stability through dynamic adjustment in terms of nanofiber sliding and HB breaking-reforming. As one demonstration, the hierarchical and reconfigurable interfibrous interface is constructed based on moderate alignment of networked bacterial cellulose nanofibers. We show that the resultant bioinspired Bouligand structural material exhibits unusual strengthening and toughening mechanisms dominated by interface-microstructure multiscale coupling. The proposed interfibrous interface enabled by moderate orderliness would provide mechanical insight into the assembly of widely existing networked nanofiber building blocks toward high-performance macroscopic bioinspired structural assemblies.

Discontinuous phase diagram of amorphous carbons

The short-range order and medium-range order of amorphous carbons demonstrated in experiments allow us to rethink whether there exist intrinsic properties hidden by atomic disordering. Here we presented six representative phases of amorphous carbons (0.1-3.4 g/cm3), namely, disordered graphene network (DGN), high-density amorphous carbon (HDAC), amorphous diaphite (a-DG), amorphous diamond (a-D), paracrystalline diamond (p-D), and nano-polycrystalline diamond (NPD), respectively, classified by their topological features and microstructural characterizations that are comparable with experiments. To achieve a comprehensive physical landscape for amorphous carbons, a phase diagram was plotted in the sp3/sp2 versus density plane, in which the counterintuitive discontinuity originates from the inherent difference in topological microstructures, further guiding us to discover a variety of phase transitions among different amorphous carbons. Intriguingly, the power law, log(sp3/sp2) ∝ ρn, hints at intrinsic topology and hidden order in amorphous carbons, providing an insightful perspective to reacquaint atomic disorder in non-crystalline carbons.

Bioinspired polysaccharide-based nanocomposite membranes with robust wet mechanical properties for guided bone regeneration

Polysaccharide-based membranes with excellent mechanical properties are highly desired. However, severe mechanical deterioration under wet conditions limits their biomedical applications. Here, inspired by the structural heterogeneity of strong yet hydrated biological materials, we propose a strategy based on heterogeneous crosslink-and-hydration (HCH) of a molecule/nano dual-scale network to fabricate polysaccharide-based nanocomposites with robust wet mechanical properties. The heterogeneity lies in that the crosslink-and-hydration occurs in the molecule-network while the stress-bearing nanofiber-network remains unaffected. As one demonstration, a membrane assembled by bacterial cellulose nanofiber-network and Ca2+-crosslinked and hydrated sodium alginate molecule-network is designed. Studies show that the crosslinked-and-hydrated molecule-network restricts water invasion and boosts stress transfer of the nanofiber-network by serving as interfibrous bridge. Overall, the molecule-network makes the membrane hydrated and flexible; the nanofiber-network as stress-bearing component provides strength and toughness. The HCH dual-scale network featuring a cooperative effect stimulates the design of advanced biomaterials applied under wet conditions such as guided bone regeneration membranes.

Biomimetic Multimodal Receptors for Comprehensive Artificial Human Somatosensory System

Electronic skin (e-skin) capable of acquiring environmental and physiological information has attracted interest for healthcare, robotics, and human-machine interaction. However, traditional 2D e-skin only allows for in-plane force sensing, which limits access to comprehensive stimulus feedback due to the lack of out-of-plane signal detection caused by its 3D structure. Here, a dimension-switchable bioinspired receptor is reported to achieve multimodal perception by exploiting film kirigami. It offers the detection of in-plane (pressure and bending) and out-of-plane (force and airflow) signals by dynamically inducing the opening and reclosing of sensing unit. The receptor's hygroscopic and thermoelectric properties enable the sensing of humidity and temperature. Meanwhile, the thermoelectric receptor can differentiate mechanical stimuli from temperature by the voltage. The development enables a wide range of sensory capabilities of traditional e-skin and expands the applications in real life.

Temperature-Dependent Paracrystalline Nucleation in Atomically Disordered Diamonds

Atomically disordered diamonds with medium-range order realized in recent experiments extend our knowledge of atomic disorder in materials. However, the current understanding of amorphous carbons cannot answer why paracrystalline diamond (p-D) can be formed inherently different from other tetrahedral amorphous carbons (ta-Cs), and the emergence of p-D seems to be easily hindered by inappropriate temperatures. Herein, we performed atomistic-based simulations to shed light on temperature-dependent paracrystalline nucleation in atomically disordered diamonds. Using metadynamics and two carefully designed collective variables, reversible phase transitions among different ta-Cs can be presented under different temperatures, evidenced by corresponding local minima on the free energy surface and reaction path along the free energy gradient. We found that p-D is preferred in a narrow range of temperatures, which is comparable to real experimental temperatures under the Arrhenius framework. The insights and related methods should open up a perspective for investigating other amorphous carbons.

A generalized Knudsen theory for gas transport with specular and diffuse reflections

Gas permeation through nanopores is a long-standing research interest because of its importance in fundamental science and many technologies. The free molecular flow is conventionally described by Knudsen theory, under the diffuse reflection assumption. Recent experiments reported ballistic molecular transport of gases, which urges for the development of theoretical tools to address the predominant specular reflections on atomically smooth surfaces. Here we develop a generalized Knudsen theory, which is applicable to various boundary conditions covering from the extreme specular reflection to the complete diffuse reflection. Our model overcomes the limitation of Smoluchowski model, which predicts the gas flow rate diverging to infinity for specular reflection. It emphasizes that the specular reflection can reduce the dissipation flow rate. Our model is validated using molecular dynamics simulations in various scenarios. The proposed model provides insights into the gas transport under confinement and extends Knudsen theory to free molecular flow with specular reflections.

Deformable hard tissue with high fatigue resistance in the hinge of bivalve Cristaria plicata

The hinge of bivalve shells can sustain hundreds of thousands of repeating opening-and-closing valve motions throughout their lifetime. We studied the hierarchical design of the mineralized tissue in the hinge of the bivalve Cristaria plicata, which endows the tissue with deformability and fatigue resistance and consequently underlies the repeating motion capability. This folding fan-shaped tissue consists of radially aligned, brittle aragonite nanowires embedded in a resilient matrix and can translate external radial loads to circumferential deformation. The hard-soft complex microstructure can suppress stress concentration within the tissue. Coherent nanotwin boundaries along the longitudinal direction of the nanowires increase their resistance to bending fracture. The unusual biomineral, which exploits the inherent properties of each component through multiscale structural design, provides insights into the evolution of antifatigue structural materials.

Biomimetic Ultratough, Strong, and Ductile Artificial Polymer Fiber Based on Immovable and Slidable Cross-links

It remains a challenge to artificially fabricate fibers with the macroscopic mechanical properties and characteristics of spider silk. Herein, a covalently cross-linked double-network strategy was proposed to disrupt the inverse relation of strength and toughness in the fabrication of ultratough and superstrong artificial polymer fibers. Our design utilized a strong fishnet-like structure based on immovable cellulose nanocrystal cross-links to mimic the function of the β-sheet nanocrystallites and a slidable mechanically interlocked network based on polyrotaxane to imitate the dissipative stick-slip motion of the β-strands in spider silk. The resultant fiber exhibited superior mechanical properties, including gigapascal tensile strength, a ductility of over 60%, and a toughness exceeding 420 MJ/m³. The fibers also showed robust biological functions similar to those of spider silks, demonstrating mechanical enhancement, energy absorption ability, and shape memory. A composite with our artificial fibers as reinforcing fibers exhibited remarkable tear and fatigue resistance.

Pyro-layered heterostructured nanosheet membrane for hydrogen separation

Engineering different two-dimensional materials into heterostructured membranes with unique physiochemical properties and molecular sieving channels offers an effective way to design membranes for fast and selective gas molecule transport. Here we develop a simple and versatile pyro-layering approach to fabricate heterostructured membranes from boron nitride nanosheets as the main scaffold and graphene nanosheets derived from a chitosan precursor as the filler. The rearrangement of the graphene nanosheets adjoining the boron nitride nanosheets during the pyro-layering treatment forms precise in-plane slit-like nanochannels and a plane-to-plane spacing of ~3.0 Å, thereby endowing specific gas transport pathways for selective hydrogen transport. The heterostructured membrane shows a high H₂ permeability of 849 Barrer, with a H₂/CO₂ selectivity of 290. This facile and scalable technique holds great promise for the fabrication of heterostructures as next-generation membranes for enhancing the efficiency of gas separation and purification processes.

Extremely Robust and Multifunctional Nanocomposite Fibers for Strain-Unperturbed Textile Electronics

Textile electronics are needed that can achieve strain-unaltered performance when they undergo irregular and repeated strain deformation. Such strain-unaltered textile electronics require advanced fibers that simultaneously have high functionalities and extreme robustness as fabric materials. Current synthetic nanocomposite fibers based on inorganic matrix have remarkable functionalities but often suffer from low robustness and poor tolerance against crack formation. Here, we present a design for a high-performance multifunctional nanocomposite fiber that is mechanically and electrically robust, which was realized by crosslinking titanium carbide (MXene) nanosheets with a slide-ring polyrotaxane to form an internal mechanically-interlocked network. This inorganic matrix nanocomposite fiber featured distinct strain-hardening mechanical behavior and exceptional load-bearing capability (toughness approaching 60 MJ m^-3 and ductility over 27%). It retained 100% of its ductility after cyclic strain loading. Moreover, the high electrical conductivity (>1.1 × 10⁵ S m^-1 ) and electrochemical performance (>360 F cm^-3 ) of the nanocomposite fiber can be well retained after subjecting the fiber to extensive (>25% strain) and long-term repeated (10 000 cycles) dimensional changes. Such superior robustness allowed for the fabrication of the nanocomposite fibers into various robust wearable devices, such as textile-based electromechanical sensors with strain-unalterable sensing performance and fiber-shaped supercapacitors with invariant electrochemical performance for 10 000 strain loading cycles.

High-performance Marangoni hydrogel rotors with asymmetric porosity and drag reduction profile

Miniaturized rotors based on Marangoni effect have attracted great attentions due to their promising applications in propulsion and power generation. Despite intensive studies, the development of Marangoni rotors with high rotation output and fuel economy remains challenging. To address this challenge, we introduce an asymmetric porosity strategy to fabricate Marangoni rotor composed of thermoresponsive hydrogel and low surface tension anesthetic metabolite. Combining enhanced Marangoni propulsion of asymmetric porosity with drag reduction of well-designed profile, our rotor precedes previous studies in rotation output (~15 times) and fuel economy (~34% higher). Utilizing thermoresponsive hydrogel, the rotor realizes rapid refueling within 33 s. Moreover, iron-powder dopant further imparts the rotors with individual-specific locomotion in group under magnetic stimuli. Significantly, diverse functionalities including kinetic energy transmission, mini-generator and environmental remediation are demonstrated, which open new perspectives for designing miniaturized rotating machineries and inspire researchers in robotics, energy, and environment.

Bioinspired Impact-Resistant and Self-Monitoring Nanofibrous Composites

Lightweight and impact-resistant materials with self-monitoring capability are highly desired for protective applications, but are challenging to be artificially fabricated. Herein, a scalable-manufactured aramid nanofiber (ANF)-based composite combining these key properties is presented. Inspired by the strengthening and toughening mechanisms relying on recoverable interfaces commonly existing in biological composites, mechanically weak but dense hydrogen bonds are introduced into the ANF interfaces to achieve simultaneously enhanced tensile strength (300 MPa), toughness (55 MJ m^-3 ), and impact resistance of the nanofibrous composite. The achieved mechanical property combination displays attractive advantages compared with that of most of previously reported nanocomposites. Additionally, the nanofibrous composite is designed with a capability for real-time self-monitoring of its structural safety during both quasi-static tensile and dynamic impact processes, based on the strain/damage-induced resistance variations of a conductive nanowire network inside it. These comprehensive properties enable the present nanofibrous composite with promising potential for protective applications.

Mechanically robust bamboo node and its hierarchically fibrous structural design

Although short bamboo nodes function in mechanical support and fluid exchange for bamboo survival, their structures are not fully understood compared to unidirectional fibrous internodes. Here, we identify the spatial heterostructure of the bamboo node via multiscale imaging strategies and investigate its mechanical properties by multimodal mechanical tests. We find three kinds of hierarchical fiber reinforcement schemes that originate from the bamboo node, including spatially tightened interlocking, triaxial interconnected scaffolding and isotropic intertwining. These reinforcement schemes, built on porous vascular bundles, microfibers and more-refined twist-aligned nanofibers, govern the structural stability of the bamboo via hierarchical toughening. In addition, the spatial liquid transport associated with these multiscale fibers within the bamboo node is experimentally verified, which gives perceptible evidence for life-indispensable multidirectional fluid exchange. The functional integration of mechanical reinforcement and liquid transport reflects the fact that the bamboo node has opted for elaborate structural optimization rather than ingredient richness. This study will advance our understanding of biological materials and provide insight into the design of fiber-reinforced structures and biomass utilization.

Ultrafast rectifying counter-directional transport of proton and metal ions in metal-organic framework-based nanochannels

Bioinspired control of ion transport at the subnanoscale has become a major focus in the fields of nanofluidics and membrane separation. It is fundamentally important to achieve rectifying ion-specific transport in artificial ion channels, but it remains a challenge. Here, we report a previously unidentified metal-organic framework nanochannel (MOF NC) nanofluidic system to achieve unidirectional ultrafast counter-directional transport of alkaline metal ions and proton. This highly effective ion-specific rectifying transport behavior is attributed to two distinct mechanisms for metal ions and proton, elucidated by theoretical simulations. Notably, the MOF NC exhibits ultrafast proton conduction stemming from ultrahigh proton mobility, i.e., 11.3 × 10^-7 m² /V·s, and low energy barrier of 0.075 eV in MIL-53-COOH subnanochannels. Furthermore, the MOF NC shows excellent osmotic power-harvesting performance in reverse electrodialysis. This work expects to inspire further research into multifunctional biomimetic ion channels for advanced nanofluidics, biomimetics, and separation applications.

Pushing detectability and sensitivity for subtle force to new limits with shrinkable nanochannel structured aerogel

There is an urgent need for developing electromechanical sensor with both ultralow detection limits and ultrahigh sensitivity to promote the progress of intelligent technology. Here we propose a strategy for fabricating a soft polysiloxane crosslinked MXene aerogel with multilevel nanochannels inside its cellular walls for ultrasensitive pressure detection. The easily shrinkable nanochannels and optimized material synergism endow the piezoresistive aerogel with an ultralow Young's modulus (140 Pa), numerous variable conductive pathways, and mechanical robustness. This aerogel can detect extremely subtle pressure signals of 0.0063 Pa, deliver a high pressure sensitivity over 1900 kPa^-1, and exhibit extraordinarily sensing robustness. These sensing properties make the MXene aerogel feasible for monitoring ultra-weak force signals arising from a human's deep-lying internal jugular venous pulses in a non-invasive manner, detecting the dynamic impacts associated with the landing and take-off of a mosquito, and performing static pressure mapping of a hair.

Artificial Nacre with High Toughness Amplification Factor: Residual Stress-Engineering Sparks Enhanced Extrinsic Toughening Mechanisms

The high fracture toughness of mollusk nacre is predominantly attributed to the structure-associated extrinsic mechanisms such as platelet sliding and crack deflection. While the nacre-mimetic structures are widely adopted in artificial ceramics, the extrinsic mechanisms are often weakened by the relatively low tensile strength of the platelets with a large aspect ratio, which makes the fracture toughness of these materials much lower than expected. Here, it is demonstrated that the fracture toughness of artificial nacre materials with high inorganic contents can be improved by residual stress-induced platelet strengthening, which can catalyze more effective extrinsic toughening mechanisms that are specific to the nacre-mimetic structures. Thereby, while the absolute fracture toughness of the materials is not comparable with advanced ceramic-based composites, the toughness amplification factor of the material reaches 16.1 ± 1.1, outperforming the state-of-the-art biomimetic ceramics. The results reveal that, with the merit of nacre-mimetic structural designs, the overall fracture toughness of the artificial nacre can be improved by the platelet strengthening through extrinsic toughening mechanisms, although the intrinsic fracture toughness may decrease at platelet level due to the strengthening. It is anticipated that advanced structural ceramics with exceeding performance can be fabricated through these unconventional strategies.

Double-Layer Nacre-Inspired Polyimide-Mica Nanocomposite Films with Excellent Mechanical Stability for LEO Environmental Conditions

Owing to their outstanding comprehensive performance, polyimide (PI) composite films are widely used on the external surfaces of spacecraft to protect them from the adverse conditions of low Earth orbit (LEO). However, current PI composite films have inadequate mechanical properties and atomic oxygen (AO) resistance. Herein, this work fabricates a new PI-based nanocomposite film with greatly enhanced mechanical properties and AO resistance by integrating mica nanosheets with PI into a unique double-layer nacre-inspired structure with a much higher density of mica nanosheets in the top layer. In addition, the unique microstructure and the intrinsic properties of mica also impart the nanocomposite film with favorable ultraviolet and high-temperature resistance. The comprehensive performance of this material is superior to those of pure PI, single-layer PI-mica, and previously reported PI-based composite films. Thus, the double-layer nanocomposite film displays great potential as an aerospace material for use in LEO.

Micromechanical Landscape of Three-Dimensional Disordered Graphene Networks

Disordered carbons can be considered under the modeling framework of disordered graphene networks (DGNs) due to the continuous three-dimensional connectivity and high graphitization. Correlating microstructures and mechanical behaviors of DGNs to their topology is pivotal to revealing more intrinsic features hidden by disorder. Herein, starting from basic deformations and topology, we investigate DGNs with various densities to explore their micromechanical landscape. Both the tension and shear of DGNs exhibit prolonged plastic platforms through local tearing of microstructures. However, compression displays special plastic damages of forming kinklike puckers and sp³-bonded carbon, resulting in a tension-compression asymmetry of DGNs. Out-of-plane topological defects contribute to the main negative-curvature topology in deformed DGNs. Moreover, there are novel scaling laws where both the Young's modulus and strength (logarithms) follow an inversely proportional scaling with respect to average angular defects. Ashby charts demonstrate that the mechanical properties of DGNs can reach the theoretical limit region, surpassing those of most conventional materials.

A Highly Compressible and Stretchable Carbon Spring for Smart Vibration and Magnetism Sensors

Porous carbon materials demonstrate extensive applications for their attractive characteristics. Mechanical flexibility is an essential property guaranteeing their durability. After decades of research efforts, compressive brittleness of porous carbon materials is well resolved. However, reversible stretchability remains challenging to achieve due to the intrinsically weak connections and fragile joints of the porous carbon networks. Herein, it is presented that a porous all-carbon material achieving both elastic compressibility and stretchability at large strain from -80% to 80% can be obtained when a unique long-range lamellar multi-arch microstructure is introduced. Impressively, the porous all-carbon material can maintain reliable structural robustness and durability under loading condition of cyclic compressing-stretching process, similar to a real metallic spring. The unique performance renders it as a promising platform for making smart vibration and magnetism sensors, even capable of operating at extreme temperatures. Furthermore, this study provides valuable insights for creating highly stretchable and compressible porous materials from other neat inorganic components for diverse applications in future.

Anomalously low friction of confined monolayer water with a quadrilateral structure

In this work, we explored how the structure of monolayer water confined between two graphene sheets is coupled to its dynamic behavior. Our molecular dynamics simulations show that there is a remarkable interrelation between the friction of confined water with two walls and its structure under extreme confinement. When the water molecules formed a regular quadrilateral structure, the friction coefficient is dramatically reduced. Such a low-friction coefficient can be attributed to the formation of long-range ordered hydrogen bond network, which not only decreases the structure corrugation in the direction perpendicular to the walls but also promotes the collective motion of the confined water. The regular quadrilateral structure can be formed only if the number density of confined water falls within a certain range. Higher number density results in larger structure corrugations, which increases the friction, while smaller number density leads to an irregular hydrogen bond network in which the collective motion cannot play the role. We demonstrated that there are four distinct stages in the diagram of the friction coefficient vs the number density of confined water. This research clearly established the connection between the dynamic characteristics of confined monolayer water and its structure, which is beneficial to further understand the mechanism of the high-speed water flow through graphene nanocapillaries observed in recent experiments.

Formation and topological structure of three-dimensional disordered graphene networks

Disordered graphene networks (DGNs) can be regarded as the three-dimensional (3D) assembly of graphene-like fragments at the nanoscale, in which some intrinsic topological features are usually hidden in these formless fragments without clear understanding. Although some high-resolution structural patterns have been observed in pyrolytic carbons and flash graphene experimentally, it is still hard to characterize the topology and texture of DGNs considering continuous 3D connectivity. Toward this end, starting from the annealing process, we herein performed molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the formation and topological structure of DGNs. Three typical stages are found during the formation of DGNs, that is, the formation of polyaromatic fragments, formation of a disordered framework, and further graphitization. The topology of the obtained DGNs was then investigated, including topological defects, stacking behavior, and global curvature. Several typical in-plane and out-of-plane topological defects are found to connect the 3D network of graphene-like layers. The computed X-ray diffraction and angular defects demonstrate that a high-density DGN tends to form a randomly stacked structure with more connections, while a low-density DGN exhibits more bowl-shaped layers and a less distorted curvature. At low annealing temperatures, the local curvature of DGNs is highly distorted, and the structure seems to lack graphitization compared to high-temperature ones.

Bio-Inspired Lotus-Fiber-like Spiral Hydrogel Bacterial Cellulose Fibers

Hydrogel materials with high water content and good biocompatibility are drawing more and more attention now, especially for biomedical use. However, it still remains a challenge to construct hydrogel fibers with enough strength and toughness for practical applications. Herein, we report a bio-inspired lotus-fiber-mimetic spiral structure hydrogel bacterial cellulose fiber with high strength, high toughness, high stretchability, and energy dissipation, named biomimetic hydrogel fiber (BHF). The spiral-like structure endows BHF with excellent stretchability through plastic deformation and local failure, assisted by the breaking-reforming nature of the hydrogen bonding network among cellulose nanofibers. With the high strength, high stretchability, high energy dissipation, high hydrophilicity, porous structure, and excellent biocompatibility, BHF is a promising hydrogel fiber for biomedicine. The outstanding stretchability and energy dissipation of BHF allow it to absorb energy from the tissue deformation around a wound and effectively protect the wound from rupture, which makes BHF an ideal surgical suture.

Strengthening and Toughening Hierarchical Nanocellulose via Humidity-Mediated Interface

Undoubtedly humidity is a non-negligible and sensitive problem for cellulose, which is usually regarded as one disadvantage to cellulose-based materials because of the uncontrolled deformation and mechanical decline. But the lack of an in-depth understanding of the interfacial behavior of nanocellulose in particular makes it challenging to maintain anticipated performance for cellulose-based materials under varied relative humidity (RH). Starting from multiscale mechanics, we herein carry out first-principles calculations and large-scale molecular dynamics simulations to demonstrate the humidity-mediated interface in hierarchical cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and associated deformation modes. More intriguingly, the simulations and subsequent experiments reveal that water molecules (moisture) as the interfacial media can strengthen and toughen nanocellulose simultaneously within a suitable range of RH. From the perspective of interfacial design in materials, the anomalous mechanical behavior of nanocellulose with humidity-mediated interfaces indicates that flexible hydrogen bonds (HBs) play a pivotal role in the interfacial sliding. The difference between CNC-CNC HBs and CNC-water-CNC HBs triggers the humidity-mediated interfacial slipping in nanocellulose, resulting in the arising of a pronounced strain hardening stage and the suppression of strain localization during uniaxial tension. This inelastic deformation of nanocellulose with humidity-mediated interfaces is similar to the Velcro-like behavior of a wet wood cell wall. Our investigations give evidence that the humidity-mediated interface can promote the mechanical enhancement of nanocellulose, which would provide a promising strategy for the bottom-up design of cellulose-based materials with tailored mechanical properties.

A generalized examination of capillary force balance at contact line: On rough surfaces or in two-liquid systems

We investigate the capillary force balance at the contact line on rough solid surfaces and in two-liquid systems. Our results confirm that solid-liquid interactions perpendicular to the interface have a significant influence on the lateral component of the capillary force exerted on the contact line. Surface roughness of the solid substrate reduces the mobility of liquid and alters how the perpendicular solid-liquid interactions transfer into a force acting parallel to the interface. A quantitative relation between surface roughness and the transfer strategy is proposed. Moreover, when a liquid is in coexistence with another immiscible liquid on a solid, the capillary forces exerted on liquids of both sides are involved in our theoretical model. The contact angle can be predicted by calculating three interfacial tensions. These arguments are then verified by molecular dynamics simulations. Our findings set up the generalized theoretical framework for the capillary force balance at the contact line and broaden its application in more realistic scenarios.

Shock-induced ejecta transport and breakup in reactive gas

The transport process of micro-ejecta in reactive gases has recently attracted research attention and interest. Here, we investigate the interaction between shock-induced ejecta of Al and oxygen using a reactive molecular dynamics simulation. The results reveal that metal fragments ejected into reactive gases will quickly increase the temperature of the mixing zone, followed by the deceleration of spikes and a greater shock intensity in the compressed gases, compared with the ejection in inert gases. Moreover, we find that, in vacuum, only a small number of atoms fall out when spherical ejecta particles are finally formed. In the presence of inert gases, several small particles break away from the initial fragments during the transformation of the initially formed strip-shaped fragments into spherical particles, accompanying the detachment of a large number of atoms. When ejecta are transported in reactive gases, the chemical interactions cause more atoms to separate from particles, thus forming smaller fragments and more atomic particles. The research findings show that chemical reactions play an important role in ejecta transport and breakup, which should be considered in future ejecta-transport models for better predictions.

Unidirectional and Selective Proton Transport in Artificial Heterostructured Nanochannels with Nano-to-Subnano Confined Water Clusters

The construction of biological proton channel analogues has attracted substantial interest owing to their wide potential in separation of ions, sensing, and energy conversion. Here, metal-organic framework (MOF)/polymer heterogeneous nanochannels are presented, in which water molecules are confined to disordered clusters in the nanometer-sized polymer regions and to ordered chains with unique molecular configurations in the 1D sub-1-nm porous MOF regions, to realize unidirectional, fast, and selective proton transport properties, analogous to natural proton channels. Given the nano-to-subnano confined water junctions, experimental proton conductivities in the polymer-to-MOF direction of the channels are much higher than those in the opposite direction, showing a high rectification up to 500 and one to two orders of magnitude enhancement compared to the conductivity of proton transport in bulk water. The channels also show a good proton selectivity over other cations. Theoretical simulations further reveal that the preferential and fast proton conduction in the nano-to-subnano channel direction is attributed to extremely low energy barriers for proton transport from disordered to ordered water clusters. This study opens a novel approach to regulate ion permeability and selectivity of artificial ion channels.

Lightweight, tough, and sustainable cellulose nanofiber-derived bulk structural materials with low thermal expansion coefficient

Sustainable structural materials with light weight, great thermal dimensional stability, and superb mechanical properties are vitally important for engineering application, but the intrinsic conflict among some material properties (e.g., strength and toughness) makes it challenging to realize these performance indexes at the same time under wide service conditions. Here, we report a robust and feasible strategy to process cellulose nanofiber (CNF) into a high-performance sustainable bulk structural material with low density, excellent strength and toughness, and great thermal dimensional stability. The obtained cellulose nanofiber plate (CNFP) has high specific strength [~198 MPa/(Mg m-3)], high specific impact toughness [~67 kJ m-2/(Mg m-3)], and low thermal expansion coefficient (<5 × 10-6 K-1), which shows distinct and superior properties to typical polymers, metals, and ceramics, making it a low-cost, high-performance, and environmental-friendly alternative for engineering requirement, especially for aerospace applications.

Microscopic Origin of Capillary Force Balance at Contact Line

We investigate the underlying mechanism of capillary force balance at the contact line. In particular, we offer a novel approach to describe and quantify the capillary force on the liquid in coexistence with its vapor phase, which is crucial in wetting and spreading dynamics. Its relation with the interface tension is elucidated. The proposed model is verified by our molecular dynamics simulations over a wide contact angle range. Differences in capillary forces are observed in evaporating droplets on homogeneous and decorated surfaces. Our findings not only provide a theoretical insight into capillary forces at the contact line, but also validate Young's equation based on a mechanical interpretation.

Bioinspired hierarchical helical nanocomposite macrofibers based on bacterial cellulose nanofibers

Bio-sourced nanocellulosic materials are promising candidates for spinning high-performance sustainable macrofibers for advanced applications. Various strategies have been pursued to gain nanocellulose-based macrofibers with improved strength. However, nearly all of them have been achieved at the expense of their elongation and toughness. Inspired by the widely existed hierarchical helical and nanocomposite structural features in biosynthesized fibers exhibiting exceptional combinations of strength and toughness, we report a design strategy to make nanocellulose-based macrofibers with similar characteristics. By combining a facile wet-spinning process with a subsequent multiple wet-twisting procedure, we successfully obtain biomimetic hierarchical helical nanocomposite macrofibers based on bacterial cellulose nanofibers, realizing impressive improvement in their tensile strength, elongation and toughness simultaneously. The achievement certifies the validity of the bioinspired hierarchical helical and nanocomposite structural design proposed here. This bioinspired design strategy provides a potential platform for further optimizing or creating many more strong and tough nanocomposite fiber materials for diverse applications.

Modulation of Molecular Spatial Distribution and Chemisorption with Perforated Nanosheets for Ethanol Electro-oxidation

Integrating thermodynamically favorable ethanol reforming reactions with hybrid water electrolysis will allow room-temperature production of high-value organic products and decoupled hydrogen evolution. However, electrochemical reforming of ethanol has not received adequate attention due to its low catalytic efficiency and poor selectivity, which are caused by the multiple groups and chemical bonds of ethanol. In addition to the thermodynamic properties affected by the electronic structure of the catalyst, the dynamics of molecule/ion dynamics in electrolytes also play a significant role in the efficiency of a catalyst. The relatively large size and viscosity of the ethanol molecule necessitates large channels for molecule/ion transport through catalysts. Perforated CoNi hydroxide nanosheets are proposed as a model catalyst to synergistically regulate the dynamics of molecules and electronic structures. Molecular dynamics simulations directly reveal that these nanosheets can act as a "dam" to enrich ethanol molecules and facilitate permeation through the nanopores. Additionally, the charge transfer behavior of heteroatoms modifies the local charge density to promote molecular chemisorption. As expected, the perforated nanosheets exhibit a small potential (1.39 V) and high Faradaic efficiency for the conversion of ethanol into acetic acid. Moreover, the concept in this work provides new perspectives for exploring other molecular catalysts.

Superelastic Hard Carbon Nanofiber Aerogels

Superelastic carbon aerogels have been widely explored by graphitic carbons and soft carbons. These soft aerogels usually have delicate microstructures with good fatigue resistance but ultralow strength. Hard carbon aerogels show great advantages in mechanical strength and structural stability due to the sp³ -C-induced turbostratic "house-of-cards" structure. However, it is still a challenge to fabricate superelastic hard carbon-based aerogels. Through rational nanofibrous structural design, the traditional rigid phenolic resin can be converted into superelastic hard carbon aerogels. The hard carbon nanofibers and abundant welded junctions endow the hard carbon aerogels with robust and stable mechanical performance, including superelasticity, high strength, extremely fast recovery speed (860 mm s^-1 ), low energy-loss coefficient (<0.16), long cycle lifespan, and heat/cold-endurance. These emerging hard carbon nanofiber aerogels hold a great promise in the application of piezoresistive stress sensors with high stability and wide detection range (50 kPa), as well as stretchable or bendable conductors.

Superstrong Noncovalent Interface between Melamine and Graphene Oxide

There have been growing academic interests in the study of strong organic molecule-graphene [or graphene oxide (GO)] systems, owing to their essential noncovalent nature and the consequent chemomechanical behavior within the interface. A more recent experimental measurement [ Chem 2018, 4, 896-910] reported that the melamine-GO interface exhibits a remarkable noncovalent binding strength up to ∼1 nN, even comparable with typical covalent bonds. But the poor understanding on the complex noncovalent nature in particular makes it challenging to unveil the mystery of this high-performance interface. Herein, we carry out first-principles calculations to investigate the atomistic origin of ultrastrong noncovalent interaction between the melamine molecule and the GO sheet, as well as the chemomechanical synergy in interfacial behavior. The anomalous O-H···N hydrogen bonding, formed between the triazine moiety of melamine and the -OH in GO, is found cooperatively enhanced by the pin-like NH₂-π interaction, which is responsible for the strong interface. Following static pulling simulations validates the 1 nN level rupture strength and the contribution of each noncovalent interaction within the interface. Moreover, our results show that the -OH hydrogen bonding will mainly augment the interfacial adhesion strength, whereas the -NH₂ group cooperating with the -OH hydrogen bonding and conjugating with the GO surface will greatly improve the interfacial shear performance. Our work deepens the understanding on the chemomechanical behaviors within the noncovalent interface, which is expected to provide new potential strategies in designing high-performance graphene-based artificial nacreous materials.

Dehydration impeding ionic conductance through two-dimensional angstrom-scale slits

There has been long-standing academic interest in the study of ion transport in nanochannel systems, owing to its vast implications in understanding the nature of numerous environmental, biological and chemical processes. Here, we investigate ion transport through two-dimensional slits using molecular dynamics simulations. These slits with angstrom-scale height dimensions can be realistically replicated in the simulation, which leads to direct comparisons between simulations and experiments. In particular, this new confining geometry allows the size exclusion effect to be unambiguously decoupled from other mechanisms. As the slit size approaches the ultimate scale, dehydration at the entry impedes the ionic conductance significantly, and even induces a complete ion rejection. We demonstrate that energy barriers required to accomplish the ion permeation can be theoretically connected to the partial dehydration process. The proposed model is further validated by simulations. Our results offer insights into the atomistic details of ion permeation, which may also shed light on developing effective ways for water filtration and desalination.

Bioinspired polymeric woods

Woods provide bioinspiration for engineering materials due to their superior mechanical performance. We demonstrate a novel strategy for large-scale fabrication of a family of bioinspired polymeric woods with similar polyphenol matrix materials, wood-like cellular microstructures, and outstanding comprehensive performance by a self-assembly and thermocuring process of traditional resins. In contrast to natural woods, polymeric woods demonstrate comparable mechanical properties (a compressive yield strength of up to 45 MPa), preferable corrosion resistance to acid with no decrease in mechanical properties, and much better thermal insulation (as low as ~21 mW m-1 K-1) and fire retardancy. These bioinspired polymeric woods even stand out from other engineering materials such as cellular ceramic materials and aerogel-like materials in terms of specific strength and thermal insulation properties. The present strategy provides a new possibility for mass production of a series of high-performance biomimetic engineering materials with hierarchical cellular microstructures and remarkable multifunctionality.

Biomimetic twisted plywood structural materials

Biomimetic designs based on micro/nanoscale manipulation and scalable fabrication are expected to develop new-style strong, tough structural materials. Although the mimicking of nacre-like ‘brick-and-mortar’ structure is well studied, many highly ordered natural architectures comprising 1D micro/nanoscale building blocks still elude imitation owing to the scarcity of efficient manipulation techniques for micro/nanostructural control in practical bulk counterparts. Herein, inspired by natural twisted plywood structures with fascinating damage tolerance, biomimetic bulk materials that closely resemble natural hierarchical structures and toughening mechanisms are successfully fabricated through a programmed and scalable bottom-up assembly strategy. By accurately engineering the arrangement of 1D mineral micro/nanofibers in biopolymer matrix on the multiscale, the resultant composites display optimal mechanical performance, superior to many natural, biomimetic and engineering materials. The design strategy allows for precise micro/nanostructural control at the macroscopic 3D level and can be easily extended to other materials systems, opening up an avenue for many more micro/nanofiber-based biomimetic designs.

Joule-heated graphene-wrapped sponge enables fast clean-up of viscous crude-oil spill

The clean-up of viscous crude-oil spills is a global challenge. Hydrophobic and oleophilic oil sorbents have been demonstrated as promising candidates for oil-spill remediation. However, the sorption speeds of these oil sorbents for viscous crude oil are rather limited. Herein we report a Joule-heated graphene-wrapped sponge (GWS) to clean-up viscous crude oil at a high sorption speed. The Joule heat of the GWS reduced in situ the viscosity of the crude oil, which prominently increased the oil-diffusion coefficient in the pores of the GWS and thus speeded up the oil-sorption rate. The oil-sorption time was reduced by 94.6% compared with that of non-heated GWS. Besides, the oil-recovery speed was increased because of the viscosity decrease of crude oil. This in situ Joule self-heated sorbent design will promote the practical application of hydrophobic and oleophilic oil sorbents in the clean-up of viscous crude-oil spills.

Light-Stimulated Permanent Shape Reconfiguration in Cross-Linked Polymer Microparticles

Reconfiguring the permanent shape of elastomeric microparticles has been impossible due to the incapability of plastic deformation in these materials. To address this limitation, we synthesize the first instance of microparticles comprising a covalent adaptable network (CAN). CANs are cross-linked polymer networks capable of reconfiguring their network topology, enabling stress relaxation and shape changing behaviors, and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) is the corresponding dynamic chemistry used in this work to enable CAN-based microparticles. Using nanoimprint lithography to apply controllable deformations we demonstrate that upon light stimulation microparticles are able to reconfigure their shape to permanently fix large aspect ratios and nanoscale surface topographies.
