Application of smart hydrogel materials in cartilage injury repair: A systematic review and meta-analysis

OBJECTIVE

Cartilage injury is a common clinical condition, and treatment approaches have evolved over time from traditional conservative and surgical methods to regenerative repair. In this context, hydrogels, as widely used biomaterials in the field of cartilage repair, have garnered significant attention. Particularly, responsive hydrogels (also known as "smart hydrogels") have shown immense potential due to their ability to respond to various physicochemical properties and environmental changes. This paper aims to review the latest research developments of hydrogels in cartilage repair, utilizing a more systematic and comprehensive meta-analysis approach to evaluate the research status and application value of responsive hydrogels. The goal is to determine whether these materials demonstrate favorable therapeutic effects for subsequent clinical applications, thereby offering improved treatment methods for patients with cartilage injuries.

METHOD

This study employed a systematic literature search method to summarize the research progress of responsive hydrogels by retrieving literature on the subject and review studies. The search terms included "hydrogel" and "cartilage," covering data from database inception up to October 2023. The quality of the literature was independently evaluated using Review Manager v5.4 software. Quantifiable data was statistically analyzed using the R language.

RESULTS

A total of 7 articles were retrieved for further meta-analysis. In the quality assessment, the studies demonstrated reliability and accuracy. The results of the meta-analysis indicated that responsive hydrogels exhibit unique advantages and effective therapeutic outcomes in the field of cartilage repair. Subgroup analysis revealed potential influences of factors such as different types of hydrogels and animal models on treatment effects.

CONCLUSION

Responsive hydrogels show significant therapeutic effects and substantial application potential in the field of cartilage repair. This study provides strong scientific evidence for their further clinical applications and research, with the hope of promoting advancements in the treatment of cartilage injuries.

An Encyclopedic Compendium on Chemosensing Supramolecular Metal-Organic Gels

Chemosensing, an interdisciplinary scientific domain, plays a pivotal role ranging from environmental monitoring to healthcare diagnostics and (inter)national security. Metal-organic gels (MOGs) are recognized for their stability, selectivity, and responsiveness, making them valuable for chemosensing applications. Researchers have explored the development of MOGs based on different metal ions and ligands, allowing for tailored properties and sensitivities, and have even demonstrated their applications as portable sensors such as paper-based test strips for practical use. Herein, several studies related to MOGs development and their applications in the chemosensing field via UV-visible or luminance along with electrochemical approach are presented. These papers explored MOGs as versatile materials with their use in sensing bio or environmental analytes. This review provides a foundational understanding of key concepts, methodologies, and recent advancements in this field, fostering the scientific community.

Ultraviolet Light Debondable Optically Clear Adhesives for Flexible Displays through Efficient Visible-Light Curing

With growing sustainability concerns, the need for products that facilitate easy disassembly and reuse has increased. Adhesives, initially designed for bonding, now face demands for selective removal, enabling rapid assembly-disassembly and efficient maintenance across industries. This need is particularly evident in the display industry, with the rise of foldable devices necessitating specialized adhesives. A novel optically clear adhesive (OCA) is presented for foldable display, featuring a unique UV-stimulated selective removal feature. This approach incorporates benzophenone derivatives into the polymer network, facilitating rapid debonding under UV irradiation. A key feature of this method is the adept use of visible-light-driven radical polymerization for OCA film fabrication. This method shows remarkable compatibility with various monomers and exhibits orthogonal reactivity to benzophenone, rendering it ideal for large-scale production. The resultant OCA not only has high transparency and balanced elasticity, along with excellent resistance to repeated folding, but it also exhibits significantly reduced adhesion when exposed to UV irradiation. By merging this customized formulation with strategically integrated UV-responsive elements, an effective solution is offered that enhances manufacturing efficiency and product reliability in the rapidly evolving field of sustainable electronics and displays. This research additionally contributes to eco-friendly device fabrication, aligning with emerging technology demands.

Rational Design of Stimuli-Responsive Inorganic 2D Materials via Molecular Engineering: Toward Molecule-Programmable Nanoelectronics

The ability of electronic devices to act as switches makes digital information processing possible. Succeeding graphene, emerging inorganic 2D materials (i2DMs) have been identified as alternative 2D materials to harbor a variety of active molecular components to move the current silicon-based semiconductor technology forward to a post-Moore era focused on molecule-based information processing components. In this regard, i2DMs benefits are not only for their prominent physiochemical properties (e.g., the existence of bandgap), but also for their high surface-to-volume ratio rich in reactive sites. Nonetheless, since this field is still in an early stage, having knowledge of both i) the different strategies for molecularly functionalizing the current library of i2DMs, and ii) the different types of active molecular components is a sine qua non condition for a rational design of stimuli-responsive i2DMs capable of performing logical operations at the molecular level. Consequently, this Review provides a comprehensive tutorial for covalently anchoring ad hoc molecular components-as active units triggered by different external inputs-onto pivotal i2DMs to assess their role in the expanding field of molecule-programmable nanoelectronics for electrically monitoring bistable molecular switches. Limitations, challenges, and future perspectives of this emerging field which crosses materials chemistry with computation are critically discussed.

Manipulating mechanical properties of PEG-based hydrogel nanocomposite: A potential versatile bio-adhesive for the suture-less repair of tissue

Multifunctional bio-adhesives with tunable mechanical properties are obtained by controlling the orientation of anisotropic particles in a blend of fast-curing hydrogel with an imposed capillary flow. The suspensions' microstructural evolution was monitored by the small-angle light scattering (SALS) method during flow up to the critical Péclet number (Pe≈1) necessary for particle orientation and hydrogel crosslinking. The multifunctional bio-adhesives were obtained by combining flow and UV light exposure for rapid photo-curing of PEGDA medium and freezing titania rods' ordered microstructures. Blending the low- and high-molecular weight of PEGDA polymer improved the mechanical properties of the final hydrogel. All the hydrogel samples were non-cytotoxic up to 72 h after cell culturing. The system shows rapid blood hemostasis and promotes adhesive and cohesive strength matching targeted tissue properties with an applicating methodology compatible with surgical conditions. The developed SALS approach to optimize nanoparticles' microstructures in bio-adhesive applies to virtually any optically transparent nanocomposite and any type of anisotropic nanoparticles. As such, this method enables rational design of bio-adhesives with enhanced anisotropic mechanical properties which can be tailored to potentially any type of tissue.

Improvement in Cohesive Properties of Adhesion Systems Using Movable Cross-Linked Materials with Stress Relaxation Properties

A strong, tough, and stable adhesion system used in various environments must be developed. A long-lasting adhesion system should effectively perform in the following five aspects: adhesion strength, toughness, energy dissipation property, self-restoration property, and creep resistance property. However, these properties are difficult to balance using conventional adhesives. Here, a new topological adhesion system using single-movable cross-network (SC) materials [SC(DMAAm) Adh] was designed. 3-(Trimethoxysilyl) propyl acrylate was used as the anchor, N,N-dimethyl acrylamide (DMAAm) was used as the main chain monomer, and γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) units acted as movable cross-links. The movable cross-links provided SC(DMAAm) Adh with energy dissipation properties, thereby improving its toughness. The γ-CD units also acted as bulky stoppers that provided a high adhesion strength and self-restoration properties. Moreover, the combination of the movable cross-links and bulky stoppers provided creep resistance to SC(DMAAm) Adh. The performance of the adhesion systems under different mobilities of the polymer chains was examined by adjusting the water content. In proper water-containing states, all mechanical properties of SC(DMAAm) Adh were better than those of the adhesion systems using homopolymers [P(DMAAm) Adh] and polymers with covalent cross-linking points [CP(DMAAm) Adh].

CO2 switchable adhesion of ionic polydimethylsiloxane elastomers

We have developed ionic polydimethylsiloxane elastomers that rapidly and reversibly increase their adhesion upon exposure to carbon dioxide (CO2) gas. The CO2 molecules dissolve quickly into the ionic aggregates, physically crosslinking the polymer chains and plasticizing them. The elastomer consequently becomes softer and more adhesive upon exposure to CO2.

Creation of Molecular Gel Materials Using Polyrotaxane-Derived Polymeric Organogelator

Molecular gels, which are soft and flexible materials, are candidates for healthcare, cosmetic base, and electronic applications as new materials. In this study, a new polymeric organogelator bearing a polyrotaxane (PR) structure was developed and could induce the gelation of N',N″-dimethylformamide (DMF), a known solvent for dissolving polymeric materials and salts. Furthermore, the resulting DMF molecular gels exhibited thixotropic properties, observed by the inversion method using vials, which are essential for gel spreading. The scanning electron microscopy of the xerogels suggested that the gel-forming ability and thixotropic property of gels were imparted by the network of the laminated aggregates of thin layer material similar to those of other gels made of clay materials. This thin layer material would be formed by the aggregation of polymeric organogelators. The dynamic viscoelasticity measurements of the obtained gels revealed the stability and pseudo-thixotropic behaviors of the obtained gels, as well as a specific concentration effect on the mechanical behavior of the gels attributed to the introduction of the PR structure. Additionally, the preparation of the polymer organogelator/polymer composites was investigated to improve the mechanical properties via the filler effect induced by the agglomerates of organogelator. Moreover, the tensile tests confirmed that the introduction of the gelator enhanced the mechanical properties of the composites.

Advanced stimuli-responsive membranes for smart separation

Membranes have been extensively studied and applied in various fields owing to their high energy efficiency and small environmental impact. Further conferring membranes with stimuli responsiveness can allow them to dynamically tune their pore structure and/or surface properties for efficient separation performance. This review summarizes and discusses important developments and achievements in stimuli-responsive membranes. The most commonly utilized stimuli, including light, pH, temperature, ions, and electric and magnetic fields, are discussed in detail. Special attention is given to stimuli-responsive control of membrane pore structure (pore size and porosity/connectivity) and surface properties (wettability, surface topology, and surface charge), from the perspective of determining the appropriate membrane properties and microstructures. This review also focuses on strategies to prepare stimuli-responsive membranes, including blending, casting, polymerization, self-assembly, and electrospinning. Smart applications for separations are also reviewed as well as a discussion of remaining challenges and future prospects in this exciting field. This review offers critical insights for the membrane and broader materials science communities regarding the on-demand and dynamic control of membrane structures and properties. We hope that this review will inspire the design of novel stimuli-responsive membranes to promote sustainable development and make progress toward commercialization.

Recent advances in adhesive materials used in the biomedical field: adhesive properties, mechanism, and applications

Adhesive materials are natural or synthetic polymers with the ability to adhere to the surface of luminal mucus or epithelial cells. They are widely used in the biomedical field due to their unique adhesion, biocompatibility, and excellent surface properties. When used in the human body, they can adhere to an accessible target and remain at the focal site for a longer period, improving the therapeutic effect on local disease. An adhesive material with bacteriostatic properties can play an antibacterial role at the focal site and the adhesive properties of the material can prevent the focal site from being infected by bacteria for a period. In addition, some adhesive materials can promote cell growth and tissue repair. In this review, the properties and mechanism of natural adhesive materials, organic adhesive materials, composite adhesive materials, and underwater adhesive materials have been introduced systematically. The applications of these adhesive materials in drug delivery, antibacterials, tissue repair, and other applications are described in detail. Finally, we have discussed the prospects and challenges of using adhesive materials in the field of biomedicine.

Exploring Self-Healing and Switchable Adhesives based on Multi-Level Dynamic Stable Structure

It is a challenge to develop adhesives simultaneously capable of strong adhesion and efficient switchable ability. Herein, the authors report multifunctional switchable adhesives named Cu²⁺ -curcumin-imidazole-polyurethane (CIPUs:Cu²⁺ ) by introducing 1-(3-aminopropyl) imidazole and curcumin into polyurethane system crossed by Cu²⁺ forming dynamic metal-ligand bonds. This CIPUs:Cu²⁺ has strong adhesion (up to 2.46 MPa) on various material surfaces due to their specially designed functional groups alike the secretions from mussels. It can achieve fast switching speed (30 s) and high switch efficiency through multiple contactless remote stimulations. Importantly, density functional theory (DFT) calculation reveals that such metal-ligand bonds consisting of two components: stronger Cu²⁺ -curcumin complexes and weaker Cu²⁺ -imidazole complexes can aggregate to form multi-level dynamic stable structure . The special structure can not only be acted as sacrificial sites for easily broken and reformed, allowing efficient switchable adhesion and enormous energy dissipation but also acted as firm sites to maintain the cohesion of the adhesive and the reversible reconstruction network. Intriguingly, the CIPUs:Cu²⁺ can achieve self-healing at room temperature without needing external stimuli. Overall, this strategy can further broaden the design of switchable adhesives in the fields of intelligent gadgets, wearable bio-monitoring devices, etc.

A salt-triggered multifunctional smart window derived from a dynamic polyampholyte hydrogel

Hydrogel smart windows are promising candidates for the automatic modulation of light transmittance through thermo-, humidity-, and electrochromic mechanisms. However, thermo- and humidity-triggered hydrogel smart windows are usually passively controlled and are not convenient for achieving active actuation; electrochromic windows require complex assembly and energy input. In addition, existing hydrogel smart windows are susceptible to physical damage, which may significantly shorten their working life. Herein, a salt-triggered polyampholyte hydrogel (PAH) is developed as a novel smart window with active and facile actuation as well as self-healing ability. The dynamic ionic bonds in PAH can reversibly disassociate and reform in alternate aqueous sodium chloride solution (NaCl(aq.)) and H2O, accounting for the reversible transparency-shifting and efficient modulation of light transmittance. PAH also enables patterning through precisely localized treatment with NaCl(aq.), which is useful for one-time information input/storage. Information encryption can be further realized by embedding PAH into an inherently transparent hydrogel or pasting it on an information carrier; the visibility of information is in line with the transparency-shifting of PAH. Moreover, the dynamic ionic bonds can endow the PAH-derived hydrogel smart window with self-healing and automatic damage-repairing abilities without sacrificing light modulation. Thus, salt-triggered PAH provides a new idea for designing actively actuating hydrogel smart windows with multifunctionality.

Insights into the spontaneous multi-scale supramolecular assembly in an ionic liquid-based extraction system

Herein, we report a four-step mechanism for the spontaneous multi-scale supramolecular assembly (MSSA) process in a two-phase system concerning an ionic liquid (IL). The complex ions, elementary building blocks (EBBs), [EBB]_n clusters and macroscopic assembly (MA) sphere are formed step by step. The porous large-sized [EBB]_n clusters in the glassy state can hardly stay in the IL phase and they transfer to the IL-water interface due to both electroneutrality and amphiphilicity. Then, the clusters undergo random collision in the interface driven by the Marangoni effect and capillary force thereafter. Finally, a single MA sphere can be formed owing to supramolecular interactions. To our knowledge, this is the first example realizing spontaneous whole-process supramolecular assembly covering microscopic, mesoscopic and macroscopic scales in extraction systems. The concept of multi-scale selectivity (MSS) is therefore suggested and its mechanism is revealed. The selective separation and solidification of metal ions can be realized in a MSSA-based extraction system depending on MSS. In addition, insights into the physicochemical characteristics of ILs from microscopic, mesoscopic to macroscopic scales are provided, and especially, the solvation effect of ILs on the large-sized clusters leading to the phase-splitting is examined. It is quite important that the polarization of uranyl in its complex, the growing of uranyl clusters in an IL as well as the glassy material of uranyl are investigated systematically on the basis of both experiment and theoretical calculations in this work.

Underwater luminescent labeling materials constructed from a supramolecular approach

Underwater labeling under complicated conditions is challenging for modern adhesive materials. In this work, a series of supramolecular polymer adhesives were successfully prepared via the non-covalent copolymerization of low-molecular-weight monomers (thioctic acid (TA) and tetraphenylethene derivatives (TPEs)). Strong adhesion effects were observed under various conditions. The poly(TA-TPE)s showed long-term stability in underwater labeling. Due to the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behavior of TPEs, poly(TA-TPE)s showed great potential as fluorescent labeling materials in water. Complicated and cryptographic information can be stored in labeling structures, and analyzed under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. Supramolecular labeling showed excellent distinguishability in complex backgrounds. Meanwhile, fluorescent adhesives exhibited a number of advantages over visible colored labels.

Programmable Multistimuli-Responsive and Multimodal Polymer Actuator Based on a Designed Energy Transduction Network

A polymer actuator typically responds to only one or two types of stimuli, where sensing and actuation are simultaneously exerted by the same responsive polymer. In cells, sensing and actuation are exerted separately by different biomolecules, which are integrated into nanoscale assemblies to construct the signaling network, making cells a multistimuli responsive and multimodal system. Inspired by the structure-function relationship of the signaling network in cells, we have developed a strategy to select and assemble proper functional polymers into assemblies, where sensing and actuation are exerted by different polymers, and the assemblies can present novel functions beyond that of each polymer component. Three polymers [polyaniline, PANi; poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), PNIPAm; and polydimethylsiloxane, PDMS] are integrated as nodes into a simple energy transduction network, which can be regulated by three molecular factors (pH, kosmotropic anions, and polyethylene glycol). PANi converts the light or electric stimulus into heat, which triggers the actuation of PNIPAm and PDMS. Relying on this energy transduction network, the polymer assembly can respond to six types of stimuli (light, electricity, temperature, water, ions, and organic solvents) and perform different actuation modes, serving as a powerful actuator. Programmable complex deformation upon multiple simultaneous or sequential stimuli has also been achieved by this actuator. An adaptive gripper to catch thin objects and a self-regulating switch to maintain environmental humidity illustrate the wide potential of this actuator for next-generation smart materials and soft robots.

Supramolecular Adhesive Hydrogels for Tissue Engineering Applications

Tissue engineering is a promising and revolutionary strategy to treat patients who suffer the loss or failure of an organ or tissue, with the aim to restore the dysfunctional tissues and enhance life expectancy. Supramolecular adhesive hydrogels are emerging as appealing materials for tissue engineering applications owing to their favorable attributes such as tailorable structure, inherent flexibility, excellent biocompatibility, near-physiological environment, dynamic mechanical strength, and particularly attractive self-adhesiveness. In this review, the key design principles and various supramolecular strategies to construct adhesive hydrogels are comprehensively summarized. Thereafter, the recent research progress regarding their tissue engineering applications, including primarily dermal tissue repair, muscle tissue repair, bone tissue repair, neural tissue repair, vascular tissue repair, oral tissue repair, corneal tissue repair, cardiac tissue repair, fetal membrane repair, hepatic tissue repair, and gastric tissue repair, is systematically highlighted. Finally, the scientific challenges and the remaining opportunities are underlined to show a full picture of the supramolecular adhesive hydrogels. This review is expected to offer comparative views and critical insights to inspire more advanced studies on supramolecular adhesive hydrogels and pave the way for different fields even beyond tissue engineering applications.

Photoresponsive, switchable, pressure-sensitive adhesives: influence of UV intensity and hydrocarbon chain length of low molecular weight azobenzene compounds

Unlike traditional adhesives with a fixed adhesive force, switchable adhesives, which have an adhesive force that can be adjusted by external stimuli, are specifically designed to be released according to user demand, or to enable the transfer of fine electronic devices. Previously developed switchable adhesives have limitations such as a slow switching rate, narrow adhesion modulation range, or the lack of reusability. Thus, we fabricated switchable pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) that can overcome these limitations. The adhesive force of each switchable PSA, which comprises an azobenzene-containing acrylic polymer and low molecular weight compounds, was designed to be activated/deactivated via ultraviolet (UV) and visible light irradiation. The adhesive force and UV intensity required for the switch were found to be dependent on the aliphatic chain length of the compound. The adhesive force of the SP-C10, i.e., a switchable PSA containing a azobenzene compound with an aliphatic chain of 10 hydrocarbons, increased to 3.5 N from nearly zero in response to only 30 s of low-level (25 mW cm⁻²) UV irradiation. Additionally, SP-C10 did not lose its adhesive force even after 30 cycles of repeated adhesion switching. The mechanism of adhesion switching influenced by UV intensity and the structure of low molecular weight azobenzene compounds are also reported.

Rapid Photoresponsive Switchable Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive Containing Azobenzene for the Mini-Light Emitting Diode Transfer Process

Materials that can switch adhesive properties based on external stimuli are required in several industries for temporary bonding or transfer processes. Previously studied materials achieve this under restricted conditions (hydration, heat, and long switching times), and some materials have limitations related to reuse because of irreversible reactions or residue formation on substrates. Herein, a rapid photoresponsive switchable pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) fabricated using an acrylic polymer and an aliphatic monomer containing azobenzene is reported. The adhesion force of the proposed PSA can be switched by photoisomerizing the azobenzene moiety. The process induces the transition of surface energy and modulus of the PSA. Ultraviolet and visible light irradiation can switch the probe tack force from 200 to 4 kPa within 15-30 s. Adhesion switching is possible in a state wherein the PSA remains adhered to a substrate. Mini-LEDs are selectively transferred from the carrier PSA to a polydimethylsiloxane substrate following the process of partial adhesion switching of the PSA. The novel and switchable PSA, which exhibits a selective and repeatable adhesion switching property and high switching ratio when stimulated by light stimuli, may be potentially used to realize the mini-LED or micro-LED transfer processes.

Rational engineering and applications of functional bioadhesives in biomedical engineering

For the past decades, several bioadhesives have been developed to replace conventional wound closure medical tools such as sutures, staples, and clips. The bioadhesives are easy to use and can minimize tissue damage. They are designed to provide strong adhesion with stable mechanical support on tissue surfaces. However, this monofunctionality of the bioadhesives hinders their practical applications. In particular, a bioadhesive can lose its intended function under harsh tissue environments or delay tissue regeneration during wound healing. Based on several natural and synthetic biomaterials, functional bioadhesives have been developed to overcome the aforementioned limitations. The functional bioadhesives are designed to have specific characteristics such as antimicrobial, cell infiltrative, stimuli-responsive, electrically conductive, and self-healing to ensure stability under harsh tissue conditions, facilitate tissue regeneration, and effectively monitor biosignals. Herein, we thoroughly review the functional bioadhesives from their fundamental background to recent progress with their practical applications for the enhancement of tissue healing and effective biosignal sensing. Furthermore, the future perspectives on the applications of functional bioadhesives and current challenges in their commercialization are also discussed.

Cucurbituril Based Luminescent Materials in Aqueous Media and Solid State

Cucurbit[n]urils, the pumpkin shaped macrocyclic host molecules possessing a hydrophobic cavity and two identical carbonyl portals, have drawn a lot of attention in recent years due to their high-affinity yet dynamic molecular recognition properties in water. The reversible and stimuli-responsive nature of their host-guest complexes imparts "smart" features leading to materials with intriguing optical, mechanical and morphological properties. In this review, we focus on the design of cucurbituril based luminescent materials in aqueous media as well in solid or film state. The design principles of fluorescent complexes, small assemblies as well as supramolecular polymers along with their stimuli-responsive properties and applications in diverse areas such as optoelectronic devices, light harvesting, anti-counterfeiting and information technology, cell imaging, etc are highlighted with selected examples from recent literature. We also discuss examples of room temperature phosphorescent materials derived from purely organic luminogens in the presence of cucurbiturils.

Recent Developments in Ion-Sensitive Systems for Pharmaceutical Applications

Stimuli-responsive carriers of pharmaceutical agents have been extensively researched in recent decades due to the possibility of distinctively precise targeted drug delivery. One of the potentially beneficial strategies is based on the response of the medical device to changes in the ionic environment. Fluctuations in ionic strength and ionic composition associated with pathological processes may provide triggers sufficient to induce an advantageous carrier response. This review is focused on recent developments and novel strategies in the design of ion-responsive drug delivery systems. A variety of structures i.e., polymeric matrices, lipid carriers, nucleoside constructs, and metal-organic frameworks, were included in the scope of the summary. Recently proposed strategies aim to induce different pharmaceutically beneficial effects: localized drug release in the desired manner, mucoadhesive properties, increased residence time, or diagnostic signal emission. The current state of development of ion-sensitive drug delivery systems enabled the marketing of some responsive topical formulations. Concurrently, ongoing research is focused on more selective and complex systems for different administration routes. The potential benefits in therapeutic efficacy and safety associated with the employment of multi-responsive systems will prospectively result in further research and applicable solutions.

Superstructured Biomaterials Formed by Exchange Dynamics and Host-Guest Interactions in Supramolecular Polymers

Dynamic and reversible assembly of molecules is ubiquitous in the hierarchical superstructures of living systems and plays a key role in cellular functions. Recent work from the laboratory reported on the reversible formation of such superstructures in systems of peptide amphiphiles conjugated to oligonucleotides and electrostatically complimentary peptide sequences. Here, a supramolecular system is reported upon where exchange dynamics and host-guest interactions between β-cyclodextrin and adamantane on peptide amphiphiles lead to superstructure formation. Superstructure formation with bundled nanoribbons generates a mechanically robust hydrogel with a highly porous architecture that can be 3D printed. Functionalization of the porous superstructured material with a biological signal results in a matrix with significant in vitro bioactivity toward neurons that could be used as a supramolecular model to design novel biomaterials.

Engineering Hydrogel Adhesion for Biomedical Applications via Chemical Design of the Junction

Hydrogel adhesion inherently relies on engineering the contact surface at soft and hydrated interfaces. Upon contact, adhesion normally occurs through the formation of chemical or physical interactions between the disparate surfaces. The ability to form these adhesion junctions is challenging for hydrogels as the interfaces are wet and deformable and often contain low densities of functional groups. In this Review, we link the design of the binding chemistries or adhesion junctions, whether covalent, dynamic covalent, supramolecular, or physical, to the emergent adhesive properties of soft and hydrated interfaces. Wet adhesion is useful for bonding to or between tissues and implants for a range of biomedical applications. We highlight several recent and emerging adhesive hydrogels for use in biomedicine in the context of efficient junction design. The main focus is on engineering hydrogel adhesion through molecular design of the junctions to tailor the adhesion strength, reversibility, stability, and response to environmental stimuli.

Metal cation responsive anionic microgels: behaviour towards biologically relevant divalent and trivalent ions

Anionic poly(vinylcaprolactam-co-itaconicacid-co-dimethylitaconate) microgels were synthesized via dispersion polymerization and their responsiveness towards cations, namely Mg²⁺, Sr²⁺, Cu²⁺ and Fe³⁺, was investigated. The itaconic moieties chelate the metal ions which act as a crosslinker and decrease the electrostatic repulsion within the network, leading to a decrease in the gel size. The responsiveness towards the metal ion concentration has been studied via dynamic light scattering (DLS) and the number of ions bonded within the network has been quantified with ion chromatography. Through the protonation of the carboxylate groups in the gel network, their interaction with the cations is significantly lowered, and the metals are consequently released back in solution. The number of ions released was assessed also via ion chromatography for all four ions, whilst Mg²⁺ was also used as a model ion to display the reversibility of the system. The microgels can bond and release divalent cations over multiple cycles without undergoing any loss of functionality. Moreover, these gels also selectively entrap Fe³⁺ with respect to the remaining divalent cations, opening the possibility of using the proposed gels in the digestive tract as biocompatible chelating agents to fight iron overaccumulation.

Robust and Large-Area Calix[4]pyrrole-Based Nanofilms Enabled by Air/DMSO Interfacial Self-Assembly-Confined Synthesis

The modular construction of defect-free nanofilms with a large area remains a challenge. Herein, we present a scalable strategy for the preparation of calix[4]pyrrole (C[4]P)-based nanofilms through acryl hydrazone reaction conducted in a tetrahydrazide calix[4]pyrrole (CPTH)-based self-assembled layer at the air/DMSO interface. With this strategy, robust, regenerable, and defect-free nanofilms with an exceptionally large area (∼750 cm²) were constructed. The thickness and permeability of the film systems can be fine-tuned by varying the precursor concentration or by changing another building block. A typical nanofilm (C[4]P-TFB, ∼67 nm) depicted high water flux (39.9 L m^-2 h^-1 under 1 M Na₂SO₄), narrow molecular weight cut-off value (∼200 Da), and promising antifouling properties in the forward osmosis (FO) process. In addition, the nanofilms are stable over a wide pH range and tolerable to different organic solvents. Interestingly, the introduction of C[4]P endowed the nanofilms with both outstanding mechanical properties and unique group-selective separation capability, laying the foundation for wastewater treatment and pharmaceutical concentration.

Extremely Rapid Self-Healable and Recyclable Supramolecular Materials through Planetary Ball Milling and Host-Guest Interactions

The host-guest interaction as noncovalent bonds can make polymeric materials tough and flexible based on the reversibility property, which is a promising approach to extend the lifetime of polymeric materials. Supramolecular materials with cyclodextrin and adamantane are prepared by mixing host polymers and guest polymers by planetary ball milling. The toughness of the supramolecular materials prepared by ball milling is approximately 2 to 5 times higher than that of supramolecular materials prepared by casting, which is the conventional method. The materials maintain their mechanical properties during repeated ball milling treatments. They are also applicable as self-healable bulk materials and coatings, and they retain the transparency of the substrate. Moreover, fractured pieces of the materials can be re-adhered within 10 min. Dynamic mechanical analysis, thermal property measurements, small-angle X-ray scattering, and microscopy observations reveal these behaviors in detail. Scars formed on the coating disappear within a few seconds at 60 °C. At the same time, the coating shows scratch resistance due to its good mechanical properties. The ball milling method mixes the host polymer and guest polymer at the nano level to achieve the self-healing and recycling properties.

Design of Bio-Conjugated Hydrogels for Regenerative Medicine Applications: From Polymer Scaffold to Biomolecule Choice

Bio-conjugated hydrogels merge the functionality of a synthetic network with the activity of a biomolecule, becoming thus an interesting class of materials for a variety of biomedical applications. This combination allows the fine tuning of their functionality and activity, whilst retaining biocompatibility, responsivity and displaying tunable chemical and mechanical properties. A complex scenario of molecular factors and conditions have to be taken into account to ensure the correct functionality of the bio-hydrogel as a scaffold or a delivery system, including the polymer backbone and biomolecule choice, polymerization conditions, architecture and biocompatibility. In this review, we present these key factors and conditions that have to match together to ensure the correct functionality of the bio-conjugated hydrogel. We then present recent examples of bio-conjugated hydrogel systems paving the way for regenerative medicine applications.

Rapid and continuous regulating adhesion strength by mechanical micro-vibration

Controlled tuning of interface adhesion is crucial to a broad range of applications, such as space technology, micro-fabrication, flexible electronics, robotics, and bio-integrated devices. Here, we show a robust and predictable method to continuously regulate interface adhesion by exciting the mechanical micro-vibration in the adhesive system perpendicular to the contact plane. An analytic model reveals the underlying mechanism of adhesion hysteresis and dynamic instability. For a typical PDMS-glass adhesion system, the apparent adhesion strength can be enhanced by 77 times or weakened to 0. Notably, the resulting adhesion switching timescale is comparable to that of geckos (15 ms), and such rapid adhesion switching can be repeated for more than 2 × 107 vibration cycles without any noticeable degradation in the adhesion performance. Our method is independent of surface microstructures and does not require a preload, representing a simple and practical way to design and control surface adhesion in relevant applications.

Multifunctional Polymer-Free Mineral Plastic Adhesives Formed by Multiple Noncovalent Bonds

Supramolecular adhesives have attracted a great deal of attention in recent years, resulting in their development for different applications. However, creating supramolecular adhesives with reversible and reusable properties is still a challenge. Here, a synthesis route to obtain supramolecular adhesives is presented in which no polymeric compounds are involved in the preparation. The adhesive is formed by intermolecular coulomb forces between amorphous magnesium carbonate nanoparticles and the low-molecular-weight drug ibuprofen, which results in an amorphous composite material that is transparent, shapeable, stretchable, and self-healing, making it reusable. It is demonstrated that this hybrid material provides a simple means of gluing a wide variety of materials, including metals, glass, paper, and plastics, and that is reversible and possesses reusability. The material disrupts the traditional concept of polymer-based adhesives and may be used as a sustainable mineral plastic in applications such as 3D printing.

A dimethoxypillar[5]arene/azastilbene host-guest recognition motif and its applications in the fabrication of polypseudorotaxanes

Pillar[n]arenes, known as the fifth generation of host macrocycles since 2008, have become a popular topic over the past ten years. Until now, the studies of pillar[n]arenes were mainly focused on pillar[5]arenes owing to their easy synthesis and high yields. In particular, 1,4-dimethoxypillar[5]arene (DMP5), which shows a simple structure, efficient synthesis and high yield, has played important roles in the construction of various advanced supramolecular architectures. However, DMP5 has only displayed host-guest binding properties towards some guests. Therefore, the investigation of the host-guest chemistry of DMP5 should be able to greatly promote the development of pillararene chemistry. Herein, a photosensitive azastilbene derivative was chosen as a neutral guest to study the host-guest binding and stimuli-responsive behavior with DMP5. In addition, the binding behavior of DMP5 towards a series of analogous neutral guest molecules was investigated to study the driving forces of the host-guest interaction between DMP5 and the azastilbene guest. Moreover, the [2]pseudorotaxane based on DMP5 and the azastilbene guest was used to construct a polypseudorotaxane via metal coordination.

Multifunctional Biomedical Adhesives

Currently available biomedical adhesives are mainly engineered to have one function (i.e., providing mechanical support for the repaired tissue). To improve the performance of existing bioadhesives and broaden their applications in medicine, numerous multifunctional bioadhesives are reported in the literature. These adhesives can be categorized as passive or active by design. Passive multifunctional bioadhesives contain inherent compositions and structural designs that can carry out additional functions without added external influences. These adhesives exhibit new functionalities such as antimicrobial properties, self-healing abilities, the ability to promote cellular ingrowth, and the ability to be reshaped. Conversely, active multifunctional bioadhesives respond to environmental changes (e.g., pH, temperature, electricity, light, and biomolecule concentration), which initiate a change in the adhesive to release encapsulated drugs or to activate or deactivate the bioadhesive for interfacial binding. This review article highlights recent advances in multifunctional bioadhesives.

Enantioselective Dynamic Self-Assembly of Histidine Droplets on Pillar[5]arene-Modified Interfaces

The self-assembly of macroscopic droplets on interfaces has attracted much attention and shown promising potential in the field of materials as a sensing or delivery system. Herein, we reported a new strategy to construct a d-tartaric acid-functionalized pillar[5]arene (d-TP5) interface for macroscopic differentiation of histidine enantiomers. At the molecular level, it has been proved that d-TP5 has the ability to distinguish between l-Histidine and d-Histidine ( K_L/ K_D = 4.6). Furthermore, a functional d-TP5 surface was constructed by a click reaction and characterized by contact angle measurements and attenuated total reflection-Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses. The d-TP5 surface exhibited the selective dynamic adhesion of l-His droplets on the tilted interface. It means that a d-TP5 surface can distinguish histidine enantiomers at a macrolevel. The amount of d/l-His absorbed by a d-TP5 surface and the morphology of His particles formed by removing the solvent have been investigated to prove that the self-assembly of His occurs on the d-TP5 surface. The possible mechanism has been discussed from host-guest interaction and chiral recognition. The proposed chiral material displays rapidly remarkable selectivity and is convenient to be utilized, which should be suitable for comprehending chiral recognition processing and applied to chiral recognition detection of histidine in a living body.
