Effects of a central element on the photoluminescence properties of β-diketiminate complexes composed of group 13 elements

Various kinds of boron complexes have been utilized as functional luminescent materials. However, only a limited number of emissive complexes containing other group 13 elements have been reported. Herein, we report the synthesis and optical properties of luminescent β-diketiminate complexes containing a series of group 13 elements. The synthesized complexes exhibited crystallization-induced emission properties. It was indicated that the heavier group 13 elements accelerate intersystem crossing from the singlet to the triplet excited state because of the strong heavy atom effect. Finally, we discovered that aluminum and gallium complexes can work as solid-state luminescent materials with high emission efficiencies.

Regulating the photoluminescence of aluminium complexes from non-luminescence to room-temperature phosphorescence by tuning the metal substituents

Although luminescent aluminum compounds have been utilized for emitting and electron transporting layers in organic light-emitting diodes, most of them often exhibit not phosphorescence but fluorescence with lower photoluminescent quantum yields in the aggregated state than those in the amorphous state due to concentration quenching. Here we show the synthesis and optical properties of β-diketiminate aluminum complexes, such as crystallization-induced emission (CIE) and room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP), and the substituent effects of the central element. The dihaloaluminum complexes were found to exhibit the CIE property, especially RTP from the diiodo complex, while the dialkyl ones showed almost no emission in both solution and solid states. Theoretical calculations suggested that undesired structural relaxation in the singlet excited state of dialkyl complexes should be suppressed by introducing electronegative halogens instead of alkyl groups. Our findings could provide a molecular design not only for obtaining luminescent complexes but also for achieving triplet-harvesting materials.

Preparation of seven-coordinated hypervalent tin(IV)-fused azobenzene and applications for stimuli-responsive π-conjugated polymer films

Heavy atoms can form highly coordinated states, and their optical properties have attracted much attention. Recently, we have demonstrated that a reversible coordination-number shift of hypervalent tin(IV) from five to six can provide predictable hypsochromic shifts in light absorption and emission properties in small molecules and a π-conjugated polymer film. Herein, we show the preparation of seven-coordinated tin and reveal that the binding constant of the seven coordination with ethylenediamine (EDA, K = 2900 M-1) is 200 times higher than that of six coordination with propylamine (PA, K = 14 M-1) owing to the chelate effect. Moreover, reversible vapochromism of the π-conjugated polymer film was observed upon exposure (λabs = 598 nm and λPL = 697 nm) and desorption (λabs = 641 nm and λPL = 702 nm) of EDA vapor. Furthermore, as a unique demonstration, the thermochromic film was prepared by fixing the seven coordination as the initial state using 1,10-phenanthroline. These optical variations are predictable by quantum chemical calculations. Our findings are valuable for the development of designable and controllable stimuli-responsive materials focusing on the inherent properties of the elements.

Optical Property Control by the Interligand Charge Transfer Excited State in Brominated Homoleptic and Heteroleptic Aluminum Dinuclear Triple-Stranded Helicates

The utilization of aluminum, an abundant and inexpensive element, for the synthesis of novel functional complexes is extremely important, but the design and control of photofunctionality are still unexplored. In this study, we focused on our previously developed dinuclear triple-stranded helicates incorporating two aluminum ions (ALPHY) to synthesize both homoleptic and heteroleptic complexes with bromine atoms at the 3-position of the pyrrole moiety in the Schiff base ligands. The brominated Schiff base ligands were reacted with AlCl3 to synthesize homoleptic complexes, while different ligands were mixed to prepare heteroleptic complexes. Single-crystal X-ray structural analysis revealed the structures of these novel complexes. We found that increasing the degree of bromination resulted in a tunable emission color, shifting progressively from 550 (yellow) to 566 nm (orange). Optical resolution of the complexes facilitated the observation of mirror-image circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence. Furthermore, employing ultrafast spectroscopy techniques, we have elucidated that the optical properties are governed by the interligand charge transfer (ILCT) among the three ligands. The formation of heteroleptic complexes induces the ILCT state even in nonpolar environments, thereby accelerating nonradiative decay and intersystem crossing. These findings mark significant advancements in photofunctional materials based on multinuclear complexes.

Solid-state excimer emission of o-carborane derivatives and applications for stimuli-responsive luminescent materials

o-Carborane is an icosahedral cluster containing boron and has been paid attention as a versatile platform for constructing stimuli-responsive materials with solid-state luminescence properties by suppressing aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ), which is the emission annihilation process observed in condensed states, such as concentrated solutions, solids and films. Non-specific intermolecular interactions in the condensed states resulting in ACQ are disturbed by the spherical boron cluster. More recently, it has been demonstrated from several reports that o-carborane is capable of assisting solid-state excimer emission in aryl-modified o-carboranes. Moreover, some of these materials provide unique stimuli-responsiveness. In the commodity design for solid-state luminescent materials, o-carboranes are responsible for disturbing intermolecular interactions and subsequently presenting solid-state luminescence. On the other hand, excimer emission, which is inducible from the intermolecular photophysical process, has been discovered in the solid state based on o-carborane materials. In this manuscript, recent progress in stimuli-responsive luminescent materials via excimer formation will be described. Moreover, as the further potential of o-carborane materials, recent findings on the photo-salient effect which can be induced through excimer formation followed by photoreaction will also be explained.

Synthesis of Regioregular and Random Boron-Fused Azomethine Conjugated Polymers for Film Morphology Control

Regioregular and random conjugated polymers based on a boron-fused azomethine unit were synthesized by Sonogashira-Hagihara cross coupling reaction. Although these polymers exhibited similar optical properties in the solution states, a distinct difference was observed in the aggregation forming ability in the film states; scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation indicated the existence of fiber-like aggregates in the spin-coated film of the regioregular polymer, while regiorandom polymer showed no aggregate in the film state. Accordingly, the UV-vis absorption spectrum of the regioregular polymer showed an increased shoulder peak due to the aggregate formation, whereas the random one showed no change. Furthermore, an absolute fluorescence quantum efficiency of the regioregular polymer was enhanced in response to the aggregate disassembly via thermal annealing treatment. In this study, we demonstrate that controlling regioregularity of the conjugated polymers can induce the different morphological structures and thermal-responsive behaviors. These findings could be beneficial for the design strategy and potential applications of thin-film optoelectronic devices with stimuli-responsive properties.

Near-Infrared Emissive Hypervalent Compounds with Germanium(IV)-Fused Azobenzene π-Conjugated Systems

A novel molecular design for showing near-infrared (NIR) emission is still required for satisfying growing demands for NIR-light technology. In this research, hypervalent compounds with germanium (Ge)-fused azobenzene (GAz) scaffolds were discovered that can exhibit NIR emission (λ_PL =690∼721 nm, Φ_PL =0.03∼0.04) despite compact π-conjugated systems. The unique optical properties are derived from the trigonal bipyramidal geometry of the hypervalent compounds constructed by combination of Ge and azobenzene-based tridentate ligands. Experimental and theoretical calculation results disclosed that the germanium-nitrogen (Ge-N) coordination at the equatorial position strongly reduces the energy level of the LUMO (lowest unoccupied molecular orbital), and the three-center four-electron (3 c-4 e) bond in the apical position effectively rises the energy level of the HOMO (highest occupied molecular orbital). It is emphasized that large narrowing of the HOMO-LUMO energy gap is achieved just by forming the hypervalent bond. In addition, the narrow-energy-gap property can be enhanced by extension of π-conjugation. The obtained π-conjugated polymer shows efficient NIR emission both in solution (λ_PL =770 nm and Φ_PL =0.10) and film (λ_PL =807 nm and Φ_PL =0.04). These results suggest that collaboration of a hypervalent bond and a π-conjugated system is a novel and effective strategy for tuning electronic properties even in the NIR region.

Polydimethylsiloxanes with Grafted Dibenzoylmethanatoboron Difluoride: Synthesis and Properties

A method for the preparation of polydimethylsiloxanes with grafted methoxy-substituted dibenzoylmethanatoboron difluoride has been described. The structures of prepared polymers were confirmed using NMR, IR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography methods. Their thermal properties were investigated using thermal gravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and thermomechanical analysis. The prepared polymers had good thermal (Td5% up to 393 °C) and thermo-oxidative (Td5% = 413 °C) stability. The polymers started to transit in a viscous flow state at about 40 °C (for 3 a) and at about 20 °C (for 3 b). The viscoelastic characteristics of prepared polymers were determined in the sinusoidal oscillating vibrations mode. It was shown that the studied polymers at low frequencies at room temperature are viscoelastic fluids (G′ < G″). Increasing the frequency led to inversion (crossover) of dependences G′ and G″, which indicated the transition of polymers from viscous to elastomeric behavior characteristics, and the beginning of the formation of a physical network. Optical properties were studied using electron absorption, steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. It was shown that intramolecular H-dimers exist in the ground state. The polymers studied had a bright fluorescence in the solution and in the solid state, consisting of bands of monomer and excimer emission. Thermally-activated delayed fluorescence was observed in the solution and the solid state. The prepared polymers possess intriguing properties that make them useful as optical materials, sensors or imaging agents.

Tetra-Coordinated Boron-Functionalized Phenanthroimidazole-Based Zinc Salen as a Photocatalyst for the Cycloaddition of CO2 and Epoxides

A unique B-N coordinated phenanthroimidazole-based zinc salen was synthesized. The zinc salen thus synthesized acts as a photocatalyst for the cycloaddition of carbon dioxide with terminal epoxides under ambient conditions. DFT study of the cycloaddition of carbon dioxide with terminal epoxide indicates the preference of the reaction pathway when photocatalyzed by zinc salen. We anticipate that this strategy will help to design new photocatalysts for CO₂ fixation.

Modulation of Properties by Ion Changing Based on Luminescent Ionic Salts Consisting of Spirobi(boron ketoiminate)

We report development of luminescent ionic salts consisting of the boron ketoiminate structure, which is one of the robust skeletons for expressing aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties. From the formation of the boron-centered spiro structure with the ketoiminate ligands, we obtained stable ionic salts with variable anions. Since the ionic salts show T_ms below 100 °C, it was shown that these salts can be classified as an ionic liquid. By using PF₆ anion, the single crystal—which is applicable for X-ray crystallography—was obtained. According to the optical measurements, it was proposed that electronic interaction should occur through the boron center. Moreover, intense emission was observed both in solution and solid. Finally, we demonstrated that the emission color of the PF₆ salt was altered from crystal to amorphous by adding mechanical forces. Based on boron complexation and intrinsic solid-state luminescent characters, we achieved obtainment of emissive ionic materials with environmental responsivity.

Conformation-Dependent Electron Donation of Nido-Carborane Substituents and Its Influence on Phosphorescence of Tris(2,2′-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) Complex

In this work, we report the synthesis of the nido-carborane-substituted ruthenium complexes and the substituent effects of nido-carboranes on the optical properties. Initially, from the optical measurements, it is shown that deep-red phosphorescence was obtained from the synthesized molecule, and the phosphorescent quantum yields were significantly improved by loading onto a polyethylene glycol film. This result represents that nido-carborane can work as a strong electron donor and should be an effective unit for enhancing the solid-state phosphorescence of ruthenium complexes. Further, it is suggested that the electron-donating properties of the nido-carborane units and subsequently the optical properties can be tuned by controlling the conformation of the nido-carborane units with the steric substituents. We demonstrate in this study the potential of nido-carborane as a building block for constructing optical materials as well as fundamental information regarding electronic interactions with π-conjugated systems.

Controlling the Dual-Emission Character of Aryl-Modified o-Carboranes by Intramolecular CH⋅⋅⋅O Interaction Sites

It is still challenging to realize a dual-emission system, in which two luminescent bands simultaneously appear by photoexcitation, in solid with organic dyes due to the difficulty in regulation of electronic properties in the excited state and concentration quenching. o-Carborane is known to be a versatile platform for constructing solid-state emitters since the sphere boron cluster is favorable for suppressing intermolecular interactions and subsequently concentration quenching. Here, we show solid-state dual-emissive o-carborane derivatives. We prepared 4 types of o-carborane derivatives and found dual-emission behaviors both in solution and solid states. By regulating the rotation at the o-carborane unit with the intramolecular C_cage H⋅⋅⋅O interaction, the dual-emission intensity ratios were changed. Finally, it was demonstrated that the overall photoluminescence spectra can be estimated using the binding energy of intramolecular interactions.

Recent Progresses on Designable Hybrids with Stimuli-Responsive Optical Properties Originating from Molecular Assembly Concerning Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane

In this review, we describe recent progresses on the stimuli-responsive hybrid materials based on polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) and their applications as a chemical sensor. In particular, we explain the unique functions originating from molecular assembly concerning POSS-containing soft materials mainly from our studies. POSS has an inorganic cubic core composed of silicon-oxygen (Si-O) bonds and organic substituents at each vertex. Owing to intrinsic properties of POSS, such as high thermal stability, rigidity, and low chemical reactivity, various robust hybrid materials have been developed. From the numerous numbers of POSS hybrids, we herein focus on the environment-sensitive optical materials in which molecular assembly of POSS itself and functional units connected to POSS should be a key factor for expressing material properties. We also explain the mechanisms of chemical sensors originating from these stimuli-responsive optical properties. Stimuli-responsive excimer emission and pollutant detectors, nanoplastic sensors with the water-dispersive POSS networks, trans fatty acid sensors, turn-on luminescent sensors for aerobic condition and fluoride anion sensors are described. We also mention the mechanochromic polyurethane hybrids and the thermally-durable mechanochromic luminescent materials. The roles of the unique optical properties from soft materials composed of rigid POSS, which doesn't have significant light-absorption and emission properties in the visible region, are surveyed.

Development of a fluoride-anion sensor based on aggregation of a dye-modified polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane

We report a new concept for a turn-on fluoride sensor based on the aggregation and release of a dye-modified polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane.

Unsymmetric Dumbbell-Shaped Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane (POSS) Compound as a Single-Component POSS Hybrid

Dumbbell-shaped polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) derivatives, in which two POSS units are linked through a bridge, have attracted attention in the last decade. Here, we prepared an unsymmetric dumbbell-shaped POSS derivative (3_Ph-iBu) in which isobutyl- and phenyl-substituted POSS units are linked by a disiloxane unit and compared its thermal properties with those of the corresponding symmetric isobutyl- and phenyl-substituted dumbbell-shaped POSS derivatives (3_iBu-iBu and 3_Ph-Ph, respectively). The symmetric isobutyl- and phenyl-substituted dumbbell-shaped POSS derivatives, 3_iBu-iBu and 3_Ph-Ph, were almost completely phase-separated during a mixing process. This phase separation is due to the limited solubility of phenyl-substituted POSS compounds, which are only soluble in tetrahydrofuran (THF) and insoluble in hydrocarbons such as n-hexane and toluene, while the isobutyl-substituted POSS derivatives exhibit a wider spectrum of soluble solvents. The unsymmetric dumbbell-shaped POSS, 3_Ph-iBu, showed hybrid properties of solubility in solvents and thermal behaviors. Differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) analysis showed that enthalpy of the phase transition of 3_Ph-iBu was significantly lower than those of the mixture of 3_iBu-iBu and 3_Ph-Ph. No apparent melting behavior was observed above the phase transition. The thermal degradation of the weakest isobutyl substituents improves in the present single-component hybrid structure.

Development of NIR emissive fully-fused bisboron complexes with π-conjugated systems including multiple azo groups

Development of novel near-infrared (NIR) emitters is essential for satisfying the growing demands of advancing optical telecommunication and medical technology. We synthesized elemental skeletons composed of robust π-conjugated systems including two boron-fused azo groups, which showed an intense emission in the red or near-infrared (NIR) region both in solution and solid states. Two types of bisboron complexes with different aromatic linkers showed emission properties with larger bathochromic shifts and emission efficiencies in solution than the corresponding monoboron complex. Transient absorption spectroscopy disclosed that the inferior optical properties of the monoboron complex can be attributed to fast nonradiative deactivation accompanied by a large structural relaxation after photoexcitation. The expanded π-conjugated system through multiple boron-fused azo groups can contribute to rigid molecular skeletons followed by improved emission properties. Moreover, the anti-form of the bisboron complex with fluorine groups in the opposite directions to the π-plane exhibited crystallization-induced emission enhancement in the NIR region. The molecular design by using multiple boron-fused azo groups is expected to be a critical strategy for creating novel NIR emitters.

Development of Long Wavelength Light-Absorptive Homopolymers Based on Pentaazaphenalene by Regioselective Oxidative Polymerization

We report the synthesis and absorption properties of homopolymers consisting of 1,3,4,6,9b-pentaazaphenalene (5AP). Oxidative polymerization in the Scholl reaction was accomplished, and various lengths of homopolymers can be isolated. It should be noted that we scarcely observed the generation of structural isomers at the connecting points, which is often observed in this type of reaction. Therefore, we were able to evaluate electronic structures of the synthesized homopolymers. In addition, it was observed that absorption bands were obtained in the longer wavelength region than the monomer. The computer calculation suggests that the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy levels could be lowered by electronic interaction through spatially-separated HOMOs of 5AP. Moreover, we can evaluate the extension of the conjugated system through the meta-substituted skeleton and distance dependency of the main-chain conjugation.

Molecular design and application of luminescent materials composed of group 13 elements with an aggregation-induced emission property

Complexation of π-conjugated ligands by metal or semimetal ions leads to the enhancement of the planarity and rigidity of π-conjugated systems. Boron, especially, has played a central role in the design of luminescent main-group complexes. However, these complexes still suffer the disadvantage of aggregation-caused quenching as well as typical organic fluorophores. It has recently been reported that some types of boron complexes exhibit the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property. Moreover, AIE behavior from complexes and organometallic compounds composed of the other group 13 elements, such as aluminum and gallium, has emerged in this decade. These observations greatly encourage us to develop advanced functional materials based on the group 13 elements. Indeed, recent research has demonstrated that these classes of materials are potentially versatile scaffolds for constructing chromic luminophores, efficiently emissive π-conjugated polymers and so on. This review mainly describes AIE-active group 13 complexes with four-coordinate structures and their application as photo-functional materials. Proposed mechanisms of the origins of AIE behavior are briefly discussed.

Dimerization-Induced Solid-State Excimer Emission Showing Consecutive Thermochromic Luminescence Based on Acridine-Modified o-Carboranes

Although excimer emission is a useful luminescent phenomenon for fabricating optical sensors and probes, it is difficult to apply excimer emission for film sensors due to critical concentration quenching in the solid state. Therefore, robust molecular designs for solid-state excimer emission are still being explored. One of the key examples is the previously reported acridine-ethynyl-o-carborane AcE1, which showed a bright solid-state excimer emission assisted by characteristic C_cageH···N interactions. In this paper, we report the newly synthesized acridine-diehynyl-o-carborane AcE2 and comprehensively compare it to AcE1. Both compounds had the same crystalline packing mode based on dimer formation, resulting in an efficient π-overlapping area and solid-state excimer emission. Variable-temperature photoluminescence (VT-PL) measurements revealed the consecutive thermochromic luminescence of these compounds. Finally, on the basis of the easily accessible spray-coating method, we constructed the thermochromic luminescent sensors on quartz substrates. According to the mechanistic studies, it is demonstrated that the design strategy based on a dimer-induced solid-state excimer should have great potential for applications as a molecular thermometer.

Vapochromic Luminescent π-Conjugated Systems with Reversible Coordination-Number Control of Hypervalent Tin(IV)-Fused Azobenzene Complexes

The dynamic and reversible changes of coordination numbers between five and six in solution and solid states, based on hypervalent tin(IV)-fused azobenzene (TAz) complexes, are reported. It was found that the TAz complexes showed deep-red emission owing to the hypervalent bond composed of an electron-donating three-center four-electron (3c-4e) bond and an electron-accepting nitrogen-tin (N-Sn) coordination. Furthermore, hypsochromic shifts in optical spectra were observed in Lewis basic solvents because of alteration of the coordination number from five to six. In particular, vapochromic luminescence was induced by attachment of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) vapor to the coordination point at the tin atom accompanied with a crystal-crystal phase transition. Additionally, the color-change mechanism and degree of binding constants were well explained by theoretical calculation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of vapochromic luminescence by using stable and variable coordination numbers of hypervalent bonds.

Paintable Hybrids with Thermally Stable Dual Emission Composed of Tetraphenylethene-Integrated POSS and MEH-PPV for Heat-Resistant White-Light Luminophores

Thermally stable dual emission followed by white-light luminescence from hybrid materials is reported. Hybrid films were prepared with a spin-coating method with the mixture solution containing tetraphenylethene (TPE)-integrated polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) and poly[2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene] (MEH-PPV). TPE-tethered POSS (TPE-POSS) showed high compatibility with MEH-PPV. Therefore, homogeneous films with variable concentrations of TPE-POSS were obtained. Owing to good dispersion of rigid silica cubes into matrices, POSS-containing films demonstrated high thermal stability toward molecular rearrangement by annealing as well as pyrolysis, similar to conventional polymer hybrids. Furthermore, it was found that TPE-POSS was able to enhance emission efficiencies, probably by suppressing chain aggregation. By modulating introduction ratios of TPE-POSS, dual-emission properties followed by white-light luminescence composed of cyan and orange emissions from TPE-POSS and MEH-PPV, respectively, were accomplished. It should be noted that these color balances can be preserved even in the high-temperature region (425 K). Finally, white-light luminescent materials with thermal durability were obtained.

Controlling Energy Gaps of π-Conjugated Polymers by Multi-Fluorinated Boron-Fused Azobenzene Acceptors for Highly Efficient Near-Infrared Emission

We demonstrate that multi-fluorinated boron-fused azobenzene (BAz) complexes can work as a strong electron acceptor in electron donor-acceptor (D-A) type π-conjugated polymers. Position-dependent substitution effects were revealed, and the energy level of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) was critically decreased by fluorination. As a result, the obtained polymers showed near-infrared (NIR) emission (λ_PL =758-847 nm) with high absolute photoluminescence quantum yield (Φ_PL =7-23%) originating from low-lying LUMO energy levels of the BAz moieties (-3.94 to -4.25 eV). Owing to inherent solid-state emissive properties of the BAz units, deeper NIR emission (λ_PL =852980 nm) was detected in film state. Clear solvent effects prove that the NIR emission is from a charge transfer state originating from a strong D-A interaction. The effects of fluorination on the frontier orbitals are well understandable and predictable by theoretical calculation with density functional theory. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of fluorination to the BAz units for producing a strong electron-accepting unit through fine-tuning of energy gaps, which can be the promising strategy for designing NIR absorptive and emissive materials.

Optical Characteristics of Hybrid Macrocycles with Dithienogermole and Tricoordinate Boron Units

The introduction of unconventional elements into π-conjugated systems has been studied to manipulate the electronic states and properties of compounds. Herein, boron- and germanium-containing hybrid macrocycles, as a new class of element-hybrid conjugated systems, have been synthesized. The palladium-catalyzed Stille cross coupling of bis(bromothienyl)borane and bis(trimethylstannylthienyl)- or bis(trimethylstannylphenyl)-substituted dithienogermoles as the boron- and germanium-containing building blocks, respectively, produced a mixture of several macrocyclic compounds. Single-crystal X-ray analysis of the 2:2 coupling product revealed a planar structure with a cavity inside the macrocycle. The optical properties of the macrocyclic products indicated rather small electronic interactions between the building units. However, intramolecular photoenergy transfer from the dithienogermole unit to the boron unit was clearly observed with respect to the fluorescence spectra.

Highly Deformed o-Carborane Functionalised Non-linear Polycyclic Aromatics with Exceptionally Long C-C Bonds

The effect of substituting o-carborane into the most sterically hindered positions of phenanthrene and benzo(k)tetraphene is reported. Synthesised via a Bull-Hutchings-Quayle benzannulation, the crystal structures of these non-linear acenes exhibited the highest aromatic deformation parameters observed for any reported carborane compound to date, and among the largest carboranyl C-C bond length of all organo-substituted o-carboranes. Photoluminescence studies of these compounds demonstrated efficient intramolecular charge-transfer, leading to aggregation induced emission properties. Additionally, an unusual low-energy excimer was observed for the phenanthryl compound. These are two new members of the family of carborane-functionalised non-linear acenes, notable for their peculiar structures and multi-luminescent properties.

Discovery of Functional Luminescence Properties Based on Flexible and Bendable Boron-Fused Azomethine/Azobenzene Complexes with O,N,O-Type Tridentate Ligands

Azomethine (C=N) and azo (N=N) scaffolds are a part of structural units in poly(p-phenylene azomethine) (PAM) and poly(p-phenylene azo) (PAZ), respectively. Poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) is known to be one of luminescent π-conjugated polymers, meanwhile PAM and PAZ, which are the aza-substituted PPV analogues, are regarded as weak or no emissive materials. However, by the boron complexation, intense emission can be induced. Furthermore, environment-sensitivity and stimuli-responsivity were also observed. In this review, we demonstrate unique and versatile luminescent properties based on "flexible and bendable" π-conjugated systems composed of the boron-fused azomethine and azobenzene complexes (BAm and BAz) with the O,N,O-type tridentate ligands. The "flexible and bendable" luminophores showed intriguing optical behaviors, such as thermosalient effect, aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and crystallized-induced emission (CIE). Moreover, highly efficient emissions both in solution and film states were observed from the polymers. We illustrate the results and mechanisms on these luminescent properties from the series of our recent studies with BAm and BAz complexes and polymers.

Recent developments in stimuli-responsive luminescent polymers composed of boron compounds

This review summarizes recent developments in stimuli-responsive luminescent polymers with boron chromophores, including three- and four-coordinated compounds. Sensing mechanisms based on the features of boron and polymer structures are described.

Experimental proof for emission annihilation through bond elongation at the carbon-carbon bond in o-carborane with fused biphenyl-substituted compounds

Because of their unique luminescence properties, such as aggregation-induced emission (AIE), intense solid-state luminescence and stimuli-responsive luminochromism, aryl-substituted o-carboranes have attracted attention as a platform for developing functional optoelectronic materials. However, there still remains one fundamental issue with the detailed mechanism of solution quenching in AIE behaviors. Aryl-modified o-carboranes with AIE properties exhibit intense emission not in solution but in the solid state. According to quantum calculations and many experimental results, the elongation at the carbon-carbon bond in o-carborane in the excited state, followed by nonradiative decay, has been proposed as a main path for emission annihilation in solution. However, intramolecular rotation would simultaneously occur, and there is a possibility that emission annihilation could be induced by the combination of both bond elongation and rotation. In this study, we designed two types of biphenyl-substituted o-carboranes having fused structures at the neighbor carbon and boron atoms for fixing molecular conformation. In these molecules, bond elongation is allowed, while rotation would be prohibited. From the series of optical measurements and theoretical investigations, we proved that emission annihilation can occur through bond elongation in the absence of rotation. Moreover, we show that bond elongation could be suppressed by introducing a bulky substituent at the adjacent carbon, and emission color tuning was achieved. This is the first example, to the best of our knowledge, to prove that excitation decay can proceed only through bond elongation without electronic perturbation caused by rotation.

Facile strategy for obtaining luminescent polymorphs based on the chirality of a boron-fused azomethine complex

A chloro-substituted boron-fused azomethine complex (BAmCl) having a stereogenic boron center was synthesized for obtaining a luminescent chiral crystal. We succeeded in isolating the (R)- and (S)-enantiomers of BAmCl and preparing the homochiral polymorphic crystal, while we obtained the racemic crystal with rac-BAmCl. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses suggest that a variety of intermolecular interaction patterns and intrinsic flexibility of the molecular framework should play a significant role in stabilizing the homochiral crystal. We found the difference in molecular arrangements between the racemic and the homochiral crystals, and we observed distinctly different emission colors. In particular, we observed heat-initiated homogeneous racemization without the need for a solvent or catalyst in the molten state of the homochiral crystal (R)-BAmCl. Our results mean that chiral resolution of a flexible fused-skeleton having a stereogenic boron center can be a platform for creating luminescent polymorphic materials.

Surface Segregation of a Star-Shaped Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane in a Polymer Matrix

A simple way to control only the surface properties of polymer materials, without changing the bulk properties, has long been desired. The segregation behavior when a component with a tiny amount fed into the matrix is thermodynamically enriched at the surface is one of the candidate methods. This capability was examined herein by focusing on a star-shaped polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (s-POSS), where the central POSS unit is tethered to eight isobutyl-substituted POSS cages as a surface modifier. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that the surface of a film of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was almost completely covered with POSS units by adding just 5 wt % s-POSS to it. The segregated POSS dramatically altered the physical properties such as molecular motion and the mechanical and dielectric responses at the surface of the PMMA film. These findings make it clear that s-POSS is an excellent surface modifier for glassy polymers.
