Abstract
Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a heterogenous behavioral disorder with inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity symptoms, indicating the important implication of identifying biotypes and its epicenters in understanding disease's pathogenesis. The study investigated the neuromorphic heterogeneity relating to transcriptional similarity architecture in ADHD, and further analyzed the epicenters of network-spreading in each ADHD biotype and their correlations with clinical characteristics. Individuals with ADHD could be identified into two discriminative biotypes that exhibited distinct neuromorphic aberrances. As increased regional cortical thickness deviation in ADHD, the first component of partial least squares (PLS1) positively weighted genes were over-expressed, whereas PLS1 negatively weighted genes were under-expressed as its reduction. Both ADHD biotypes exhibited distinct disease epicenters that distributed in cognitive control and attention networks with significantly heterogeneous characteristics, holding promise for advancing our understanding, and ultimately the treatment, of ADHD. Overall, our findings identified two discriminative biotypes and its epicenters in ADHD, promoting the understanding of underlying transcriptome-neuroimaging relationships.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neurovascular interfaces, specifically the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and blood-retinal barrier (BRB), play pivotal roles in maintaining the homeostasis of the central nervous system (CNS). For a long time, these structures were seen only as a way of protection, but we currently know that they have a critical role in CNS (dys)function. Several studies have identified neurovascular alterations in early stages of brain and eye diseases, contributing to the pathophysiology of such conditions. More recently, interesting data have also highlighted the importance of neurovasculature in psychiatric disorders. METHODS Using the PubMed database, we brought together the evidence concerning the changes in BBB and BRB under psychiatric conditions, with a focus on anxiety, major depressive disorder (MDD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and drug abuse, specifically related with methamphetamine (METH) and cocaine consumption. RESULTS We summarized the main findings obtained from in vitro and animal studies, as well as clinical research that has been undertaken to identify neurovascular abnormalities upon such neuropsychiatric disorders. The drivers of barrier alterations were examined, namely the role of neuroinflammation, while reporting putative barrier-associated biomarkers of these disorders. CONCLUSION This review underscores the critical need for a deeper understanding of BBB and BRB function in neuropsychiatric conditions and their potential as therapeutic targets while elucidating the key players involved. The innovative approaches to managing these complex disorders are also addressed while bridging the gap concerning what is currently known regarding the association between neuropsychiatric conditions and their vascular implications.

Abstract
PURPOSE Attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition commonly seen in children and adolescents, characterised by an increase in distractibility or inattention. Several studies have noted a higher rate of visual problems in this group, especially convergence insufficiency (CI), but when using different diagnostic criteria. The aim of this study was to evaluate visual function in ADHD children and non-ADHD controls to compare the different signs for diagnosis of CI. METHOD In this prospective case-control study, a group of children aged 7-17 years, diagnosed with ADHD before the start of pharmacological treatment and matched for age and gender with non-ADHD controls were examined. Visual acuity (VA), objective and subjective refraction, accommodative amplitude and facility, heterophoria, positive and negative fusional vergences (PFV and NFV) and stereopsis were assessed. RESULTS Sixty participants (30 ADHD and 30 non-ADHD controls) were evaluated. There was no significant difference between the two groups for VA, refraction and accommodative abilities. There were significant differences in PFV and NFV: PFV break/recovery values for the ADHD and control groups were 18.9/16.2∆ and 26.9/22.1∆, respectively. Respective values for NFV were 15.7/13∆ and 19.3/15.9∆. Using the three signs of receded near point of convergence (NPC), decreased PFV and exophoria 4∆ greater at near than distance, the prevalence of CI was equivalent for the ADHD and controls (p = 0.34) If only two signs were considered for the CI diagnosis, (i.e., receded NPC and decreased PFV), then prevalence was significantly greater for the ADHD group (p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS These results show a higher prevalence of binocular vision problems in the ADHD group. This suggests a relationship between vergence problems and ADHD, but the direction of this link remains unclear. Further studies with specific samples may be needed to understand fully the association between binocular vision disorders and ADHD.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study outlines the initiation of an interprofessional education (IPE) program designed for optometry and education students. The program aimed to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and improve the management of eye health in children with special educational needs (SEN) - a vulnerable and underserved group. METHODS This program incorporated lectures and workshops to impart essential knowledge about SEN and to develop the necessary attitudes and skills for conducting eye examinations. A key component involved vision screenings at two special education schools, where optometry (n = 43) and education students (n = 39) collaborated to serve 170 children with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities. Quantitative data was gathered pre- and post-program using a single-stage, five-level Likert scale. Qualitative insights were drawn from students' reflective writings to evaluate their learning outcomes, understanding, and confidence in managing eye health for children with SEN. RESULTS Of the participants, 37 optometry and 21 education students completed the survey (70.7% response rate). The survey results indicated significant improvements in understanding SEN characteristics (p ≤ 0.013) and increased confidence when conducting eye examinations for children with SEN (p < 0.007) after the training program. The analysis of reflective writings highlighted the program's beneficial impacts on students. They recognized the value of interprofessional collaboration, reported enhanced professional competence, gained deeper insights into their own and their peers' roles within multidisciplinary teams, and developed a strengthened sense of social responsibility. CONCLUSION This IPE program proved to be an effective method for enhancing optometry and education students' knowledge and confidence in managing eye health needs of children with SEN. The findings support the advocacy for continued collaborative efforts between healthcare providers and educators to ensure comprehensive care for this population. Such disciplinary collaboration provides positive evidence in early stages of training in both disciplines. CLINICAL TRIAL NUMBER Not applicable.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The pathophysiology of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by atypical brain network organization and dynamics. Although functional brain networks adaptively reconfigure across cognitive contexts, previous studies have largely focused on network dysfunction during the resting-state. This preliminary study examined how functional brain network organization and dynamics flexibly reconfigure across rest and two cognitive control tasks with different cognitive demands in 30 children with ADHD and 36 typically developing (TD) children (8-12 years). METHODS We leveraged graph theoretical analyses to interrogate the segregation (modularity, within-module degree) and integration (global efficiency, node dissociation index) of fronto-parietal, cingulo-opercular/salience, default mode, somatomotor, and visual networks. We also conducted edge timeseries analyses to quantify connectivity dynamics within and between these networks. RESULTS Across resting and task-based states, children with ADHD demonstrated significantly lower whole-graph modularity and greater node dissociation index between default mode and visual networks. Further, a significant task-by-diagnosis interaction was observed for fronto-parietal network within-module degree, which decreased from rest to task in children with ADHD but increased in TD children. Finally, children with ADHD displayed significantly more dynamic connectivity within and across cingulo-opercular/salience, default mode, and somatomotor networks, especially during task performance. Exploratory analyses revealed associations between network dynamics, cognitive performance, and ADHD symptoms. CONCLUSIONS By integrating static and dynamic network analyses across changing cognitive demands, this study provides novel insight into how context-specific, context-general, and timescale-dependent network connectivity is altered in children with ADHD. Our findings highlight the involvement and clinical relevance of both association and sensory/motor systems in ADHD.

Abstract
CLINICAL RELEVANCE Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been associated with visual symptoms that may impact daily activities such as near-work tasks and social interactions. Addressing these visual issues is important for improving the overall quality of life and functional outcomes in individuals with ADHD, particularly in academic and social settings. PURPOSE To investigate the relationship between vision-related quality of life and near-work visual symptoms in patients with ADHD patients. METHODS A cohort of 37 individuals with ADHD was compared to age- and sex-matched healthy controls (n = 37). The 25-Item National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI VFQ-25) and the Convergence Insufficiency Symptoms Survey (CISS) were used to assess vision-related quality of life and near-work visual symptoms. RESULTS Mean NEI VFQ-25 scores were not significantly different between the ADHD and control groups. However, individuals with ADHD scored lower on the near activities (p = 0.032; Cohen's d = -0.511), social functioning (p = 0.045; Cohen's d = -0.481) and driving (p = 0.007; Cohen's d = -0.124) subscales. The CISS scores were significantly higher in the ADHD group (23.43 ± 11.22) than in the control group (14.02 ± 9.36; p < 0.001; Cohen's d = 0.910), indicating a significant relationship between ADHD and the presence of symptomatic subjects (p < 0.001; Cramer's V = 0.541). Medication did not affect NEI VFQ-25 or CISS scores. Female gender was associated with an increased number of symptomatic subjects based on their CISS scores (p = 0.043; Cramer's V = 0.396). Symptomatic ADHD individuals had lower NEI VFQ-25 scores (85.02 ± 12.68 vs. 96.02 ± 4.63, p = 0.008; Cohen's d = -0.969), indicating compromised vision-related quality of life. CONCLUSIONS Patients with ADHD experienced a reduced vision-related quality of life and increased near-work visual symptoms, suggesting potential repercussions on academic performance and social adaptability. This study underscores the importance of addressing visual issues in the ADHD population to enhance their overall well-being and functional outcomes.

Abstract
The study aimed to assess the agreement between OptoTab SERIES, alternating Cover Test, Modified Thorington test, and Von Graefe method in measuring heterophoria and accommodative convergence over accommodation (AC/A) ratio. In an initial step, heterophoria was assessed at both distance and near in a cohort of 76 healthy young volunteers using the previously described tests. Subsequently, to determine the AC/A ratio, near-vision measurements were repeated with +1.00 D and -1.00 D lenses. All tests were performed in a randomized order across participants under consistent conditions. Significant differences were found between the Modified Thorington test and all other tests at distance (Wilcoxon test, all p ≤ 0.001) and between Von Graefe and all other tests at near (Wilcoxon test, all p ≤ 0.005). Regarding the AC/A ratio, significant differences were observed between all methods in +1.00 D AC/A ratio, except for the Modified Thorington test vs. the alternating Cover Test (Wilcoxon test, p = 0.024). In the -1.00 D AC/A ratio, differences were observed between OptoTab POCKET and all the other tests (Wilcoxon test, all p ≤ 0.001). The results indicate that all methods are interchangeable except the Modified Thorington test at distance and Von Graefe at near. For the AC/A ratio, only the Modified Thorington test is interchangeable with the alternating Cover Test using +1.00 D lenses and all are interchangeable using -1.00 D lenses except OptoTab POCKET.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We aimed to systematically review meta-analyses on the link between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and a broad range of psychiatric, physical, and behavioral health conditions (PROSPERO; no.CRD42023448907). RESULTS We identified 22 meta-analyses that included 544 primary studies, covering 76 unique conditions in over 234 million participants across 36 countries and six continents. We found high-certainty evidence for the associations between ADHD and neuropsychiatric conditions (bipolar disorders, personality disorders, schizophrenia, and pragmatic language skills), night awakenings, obesity, decayed incipient surfaces, asthma, astigmatism, hyperopia and hypermetropia, strabismus, and suicide ideation. Moderate-certainty evidence suggested that ADHD was associated with headache, mood/affective disorders, depression, bruxism, bone fractures, atopic rhinitis, vision problems, suicide attempts, completed suicide, and all-cause mortality. Low-certainty evidence indicated associations with eating disorders, sleep efficiency, type 2 diabetes, dental trauma prevalence, atopic diseases, and atopic dermatitis. Very low-certainty evidence showed associations between ADHD and several sleep parameters. CONCLUSION We found varied levels of evidence for the associations of ADHD with multiple health conditions. Therefore, clinicians should consider a wide range of neurological, psychiatric, sleep and suicide-related, metabolic, musculoskeletal, oral, allergic, and visual conditions, as well as the increased risk of mortality when assessing individuals with ADHD.

Abstract
PURPOSE The relationship between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and visual impairment remains poorly understood, and the impact of visual impairment on the development of ADHD is uncertain. The aim of this study was to investigate the refractive profile and ocular biometric characteristics in patients diagnosed with ADHD and compare them with a control group. Additionally, we aimed to explore the potential influence of sex and medication intake. METHODS A cohort of 100 participants, including 50 individuals with ADHD and 50 age- and sex-matched control subjects, was included in this study. Ocular biometric parameters were measured, and refractive error was assessed using cycloplegic and non-cycloplegic autorefraction. Subgroup analyses were performed within the ADHD group based on sex, medication intake and age to investigate potential associations with the ocular findings. RESULTS We observed no statistically significant differences in axial length, corneal topography parameters or anterior chamber characteristics between ADHD and control subjects. However, subgroup analysis within the ADHD group revealed that the prevalence of ametropia under cycloplegia was significantly higher in unmedicated (69.6%) compared to medicated (37.5%) (X2(2) = 7.320, p = 0.026) participants. Pupil diameter was significantly larger in medicated (3.91 mm) compared to unmedicated (3.58 mm; p = 0.017) individuals. Males had flatter (p = 0.004) and thicker (p = 0.008) corneas than females. Older ADHD participants had higher refractive error (p = 0.008 for non-cycloplegic and p = 0.0.003 for cycloplegic), axial length (p = 0.002) and corneal astigmatism (p = 0.049). CONCLUSIONS Our study provides compelling evidence that individuals diagnosed with ADHD exhibit a similar incidence of refractive errors and ocular parameters compared to normal subjects. Nonetheless, the prevalence of refractive errors appears to be higher in unmedicated ADHD patients, suggesting the potential benefit of stimulant treatment. Additionally, stimulant use is associated with an increase in pupil diameter.

Abstract
Introduction Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affects up to 5% of the population and is characterised by symptoms of impulsivity, hyperactivity and inattention. These symptoms are significantly impairing and carry additional risks for children and adults with ADHD, including negative mental health (e.g. depression), physical health (e.g. obesity) and societal outcomes (e.g. imprisonment, divorce). Very few studies have attempted to synthesise these risks in one publication due to the breadth of evidence published on the adverse outcomes of ADHD. Methods An umbrella review was performed to identify reviews (systematic, meta-analysis and narrative) that investigate the risks arising from having ADHD. We conducted a narrative synthesis of the findings and conducted a quality review of the included publications. Results Upon searching five databases, 16,675 records were identified. Of these, 125 reviews met the criteria for inclusion. A narrative synthesis of these findings highlighted three key domains of risks associated with ADHD: mental health, physical health, social and lifestyle. Most reviews were of good and moderate quality. Discussion This review highlights the many risks associated with having ADHD, beyond its three key symptom domains and the impact of the condition on daily functioning. Abstract
AIM The effective connectivity between the striatum and cerebral cortex has not been fully investigated in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Our objective was to explore the interaction effects between diagnosis and age on disrupted corticostriatal effective connectivity and to represent the modulation function of altered connectivity pathways in children and adolescents with ADHD. METHODS We performed Granger causality analysis on 300 participants from a publicly available Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder-200 dataset. By computing the correlation coefficients between causal connections between striatal subregions and other cortical regions, we estimated the striatal inflow and outflow connection to represent intermodulation mechanisms in corticostriatal pathways. RESULTS Interactions between diagnosis and age were detected in the superior occipital gyrus within the visual network, medial prefrontal cortex, posterior cingulate gyrus, and inferior parietal lobule within the default mode network, which is positively correlated with hyperactivity/impulsivity severity in ADHD. Main effect of diagnosis exhibited a general higher cortico-striatal causal connectivity involving default mode network, frontoparietal network and somatomotor network in ADHD compared with comparisons. Results from high-order effective connectivity exhibited a disrupted information pathway involving the default mode-striatum-somatomotor-striatum-frontoparietal networks in ADHD. CONCLUSION The interactions detected in the visual-striatum-default mode networks pathway appears to be related to the potential distraction caused by long-term abnormal information input from the retina in ADHD. Higher causal connectivity and weakened intermodulation may indicate the pathophysiological process that distractions lead to the impairment of motion planning function and the inhibition/control of this unplanned motion signals in ADHD.

Abstract
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD; also known as hyperkinetic disorder) is a common neurodevelopmental condition that affects children and adults worldwide. ADHD has a predominantly genetic aetiology that involves common and rare genetic variants. Some environmental correlates of the disorder have been discovered but causation has been difficult to establish. The heterogeneity of the condition is evident in the diverse presentation of symptoms and levels of impairment, the numerous co-occurring mental and physical conditions, the various domains of neurocognitive impairment, and extensive minor structural and functional brain differences. The diagnosis of ADHD is reliable and valid when evaluated with standard diagnostic criteria. Curative treatments for ADHD do not exist but evidence-based treatments substantially reduce symptoms and/or functional impairment. Medications are effective for core symptoms and are usually well tolerated. Some non-pharmacological treatments are valuable, especially for improving adaptive functioning. Clinical and neurobiological research is ongoing and could lead to the creation of personalized diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for this disorder.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Examining the retina represents a non-invasive method to evaluate abnormalities pertaining to the nervous and cardiovascular systems. Evidence indicates that physical activity is a non-pharmacological intervention to enhance the nervous and cardiovascular systems. However, little is unknown about its effects on ocular characteristics in children and adolescents. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of physical activity interventions on ocular characteristics in children and adolescents. METHOD The electronic bases Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, PubMed, SPORTDiscus, CINAHL, and ERIC were searched from inception to May 2023. Incorporated were randomized controlled trials or quasi-experimental designs that had implemented acute or chronic physical activity interventions among children and adolescents to evaluate various eye-related attributes via clinical examinations or surveys. Two authors independently performed the data extraction and risk of bias assessment, utilizing the Physiotherapy Evidence Database checklist. RESULTS A total of 474 articles were identified, of which eight articles underwent a systematic review, and six were chosen for meta-analysis. Chronic physical activity interventions positively impacted central retinal artery equivalent (CRAE) with a small to moderate effect (SMD = 0.21; 95% CI 0.04 to 0.39, p = 0.034, I2 = 0%) and central retinal venular equivalent (CRVE) with a small effect (SMD = 0.098; 95% CI 0.08 to 0.11; p = 0.008, I2 = 0%). Intraocular pressure, kinetic visual acuity, and eye strain also improved significantly after physical activity interventions. DISCUSSION Participating in chronic physical activity programs appear to impact children and adolescents' eye-related attributes positively.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Although evidence suggests significant cross-sectional relationships between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and several physical health conditions, less is known about their longitudinal associations. We investigated the cumulative effect of childhood physical health conditions on ADHD symptoms at age 17 years, controlling for environmental factors, ADHD medication status, and ADHD symptoms at age 3 years. METHOD Using Millennium Cohort Study data (weighted n = 8,059), we assessed whether 4 physical health clusters (sensory, neurological, atopic, and cardio-metabolic) were associated with scores on the ADHD subscale from the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire at age 17 years. Environmental factors were grouped into 5 cumulative risk indices: prenatal, perinatal, postnatal environment, postnatal maternal well-being, and sociodemographic factors. Regression analyses determined whether each physical health cluster was associated with ADHD score while controlling for environmental factors, ADHD medication, and earlier symptoms. RESULTS Sensory, neurological, and cardio-metabolic clusters were all significantly associated with ADHD symptoms (β range = 0.04-0.09, p < .001). The overall model explained 2% of the variance. This rose to 21% (ΔR2 = 0.06) after adjusting for confounders. The sensory (β = 0.06) and neurological (β = 0.06) clusters remained significant (R2 = 0.21, ΔR2 = 0.06), but the cardio-metabolic cluster was no longer a significant predictor. CONCLUSION Sensory or neurological conditions in childhood were associated with higher ADHD symptoms aged 17 after adjustment of confounders. This was not the case for atopic or cardio-metabolic conditions. These findings have implications for the care of children with sensory/neurological conditions and future research examining ADHD etiopathophysiology.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There has been limited exploration of the relationship between ADHD and vision impairment, especially in relation to ADHD medication regimens and age. This study aims to examine trends in visual disorders in young patients with ADHD. METHODS We analyzed deidentified patient records from TriNetX database. Patients under 22 years old were divided into cohorts based on ADHD status and medication regimen. We compared prevalence of vision disorders between cohorts. RESULTS We studied over 1 million patients. The ADHD cohort had higher rates of all visual disorders than their non-ADHD peers. Medication usage was found to have a slight impact, with non-stimulants associating with higher rates for all outcomes. DISCUSSION Our findings suggest that the higher occurrence of visual disorders in ADHD is not primarily due to misdiagnosis or medication effects. There is a need for regular eye care in ADHD patients and further investigation into the role of ADHD medications in eye health.

Abstract
Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) experience a range of medical and neurodevelopmental conditions, necessitating systematic study of their occurrence and impact on neurodevelopmental outcomes. We describe the prevalence and relationships of medical, neurodevelopmental (ND), and mental health (MH) conditions in children with DS. We created a prospective clinical database of individuals with DS, integrated into the workflow of a specialty Down Syndrome Program at a specialty pediatric referral hospital. Conditions were collected through caregiver- and clinician report at clinical visits (N = 599). We calculated frequencies of medical, ND, and MH conditions and then assessed the relationship between medical, ND, and MH conditions using frequencies and comparative statistics. The most frequent co-occurring conditions were vision (72.5%), ear/hearing (71.0%), gastrointestinal (61.3%), respiratory (45.6%), and feeding (33.6%) problems, with variation in frequency by age. ND and MH conditions were reported in one quarter, most commonly autism spectrum disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Those with ND and MH conditions had greater frequency of medical conditions, with highest rates of vision, ear/hearing, and gastrointestinal issues, and CHD. Systematically collected clinical data in a large cohort of children with DS reveals high prevalence of several co-occurring medical, ND, and MH conditions. Clinical care requires an understanding of the complex relationship between medical conditions and neurodevelopment.

Abstract
AIM To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis assessing whether vision and/or eye disorders are associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). METHOD Based on a pre-registered protocol (PROSPERO: CRD42022328485), we searched PubMed, Web of Knowledge/Science, Ovid Medline, Embase and APA PsycINFO up to 5th February 2022, with no language/type of document restrictions. We included observational studies 1) reporting at least one measure of vision in people of any age with a diagnosis of ASD based on DSM or ICD criteria, or ADOS; or 2) reporting the prevalence of ASD in people with and without vision disorders. Study quality was assessed with the Appraisal tool for Cross-Sectional Studies (AXIS). Random-effects meta-analyses were used for data synthesis. RESULTS We included 49 studies in the narrative synthesis and 46 studies in the meta-analyses (15,629,159 individuals distributed across multiple different measures). We found meta-analytic evidence of increased prevalence of strabismus (OR = 4.72 [95% CI: 4.60, 4.85]) in people with versus those without ASD (non-significant heterogeneity: Q = 1.0545, p = 0.7881). We also found evidence of increased accommodation deficits (Hedge's g = 0.68 [CI: 0.28, 1.08]) (non-significant heterogeneity: Q = 6.9331, p = 0.0741), reduced peripheral vision (-0.82 [CI: -1.32, -0.33]) (non-significant heterogeneity: Q = 4.8075, p = 0.4398), reduced stereoacuity (0.73 [CI: -1.14, -0.31]) (non-significant heterogeneity: Q = 0.8974, p = 0.3435), increased color discrimination difficulties (0.69 [CI: 0.27,1.10]) (non-significant heterogeneity: Q = 9.9928, p = 0.1890), reduced contrast sensitivity (0.45 [CI: -0.60, -0.30]) (non-significant heterogeneity: Q = 9.9928, p = 0.1890) and increased retinal thickness (=0.29 [CI: 0.07, 0.51]) (non-significant heterogeneity: Q = 0.8113, p = 0.9918) in ASD. DISCUSSION ASD is associated with some self-reported and objectively measured functional vision problems, and structural alterations of the eye, even though we observed several methodological limitations in the individual studies included in our meta-analyses. Abstract
To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of the association between children and adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and ocular characteristics. Systematic review with meta-analysis. Six databases (PubMed, Scopus, APA PsycInfo, Embase, EBSCOhost, and Cochrane library) were selected for a systematic literature search from database inception to July 2022. The observational studies assessing and reporting at least one outcome regarding ocular characteristics in children and adolescents with ADHD or ASD aged 6-17 were included. Studies in languages other than English, studies of adult or elderly human populations, and animal studies were excluded. The results were analyzed following the PRISMA guideline 2020. The findings of 15 studies, including 433 participants with ADHD, 253 participants with ASD, and 514 participants with typical development (TD), revealed that there were no significant differences in retinal nerve fiber layer, ganglion cell complex, and macular thickness between the ADHD group and the TD group. In subgroup analysis, significant differences in inferior ganglion cell (MD = - 3.19; 95% CI = [- 6.06, - 0.31], p = 0.03) and nasal macular thickness (MD = 5.88; 95% CI = [- 0.01, 11.76], p = 0.05) were detected between the ADHD group and the TD group. A significant difference in pupillary light reflex (PLR) was also observed between the ASD group and the TD group (MD = 29.7; 95% CI = [18.79, 40.63], p < 0.001). Existing evidence suggests a possible association between children and adolescents with ADHD or ASD and ocular characteristics. Given the limited number of studies, further research on a larger cohort is necessary to claim a possible diagnosis of ADHD or ASD through ocular characteristics.

Abstract
Objective Stimulation of the peripheral visual field has been previously reported as beneficial for cognitive performance in ADHD. This study assesses the safety and efficacy of a novel intervention involving peripheral visual stimuli in managing attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Methods One hundred and eight adults, 18-40 years old, with ADHD, were enrolled in a two-month open-label study. The intervention (i.e., Neuro-glasses) consisted of standard eyeglasses with personalized peripheral visual stimuli embedded on the lenses. Participants were assessed at baseline and at the end of the study with self-report measures of ADHD symptoms (the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale; ASRS), and executive functions (The Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function Adult Version; BRIEF-A). A computerized test of continuous performance (The Conners' Continuous Performance Test-3; CPT-3) was tested at baseline with standard eyeglasses and at the end of study using Neuro-glasses. The Clinical Global Impression-Improvement scale (CGI-I) was assessed at the intervention endpoint. Safety was monitored by documentation of adverse events. Results The efficacy analysis included 97 participants. Significant improvements were demonstrated in self-reported measures of inattentive symptoms (ASRS inattentive index; p = 0.037) and metacognitive functions concerning self-management and performance monitoring (BRIEF-A; p = 0.029). A continuous-performance test (CPT-3) indicated significant improvement in detectability (d'; p = 0.027) and reduced commission errors (p = 0.004), suggesting that the Neuro-glasses have positive effects on response inhibition. Sixty-two percent of the participants met the response criteria assessed by a clinician (CGI-I). No major adverse events were reported. Conclusion Neuro-glasses may offer a safe and effective approach to managing adult ADHD. Results encourage future controlled efficacy studies to confirm current findings in adults and possibly children with ADHD.Clinical trial registration: https://www.clinicaltrials.gov/, Identifier NCT05777785.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults is strongly associated with psychiatric comorbidity and functional impairment. Here, we aimed to use a newly developed online cognitive battery with strong psychometric properties for measuring individual differences in three cognitive mechanisms proposed to underlie ADHD traits in adults: 1) attentional control - the ability to mobilize cognitive resources to stop a prepotent motor response; 2) information sampling/gathering - adequate sampling of information in a stimulus detection task prior to making a decision; and 3) shifting - the ability to adapt behavior in response to positive and negative contingencies. METHODS This cross-sectional and correlational study recruited 650 adults (330 males) aged 18-69 years (M = 33.06; MD = 31.00; SD = 10.50), with previously diagnosed ADHD (n = 329) and those from the general community without a history of ADHD (n = 321). Self-report measures of ADHD traits (i.e., inattention/disorganization, impulsivity, hyperactivity) and the cognitive battery were completed online. RESULTS Latent class analysis, exploratory structural equation modeling and factor mixture modeling revealed self-reported ADHD traits formed a unidimensional and approximately normally distributed phenotype. Bayesian structural equation modeling demonstrated that all three mechanisms measured by the cognitive battery, explained unique, incremental variance in ADHD traits, with a total of 15.9% explained in the ADHD trait factor. CONCLUSIONS Attentional control and shifting, as well as the less researched cognitive process of information gathering, explain individual difference variance in self-reported ADHD traits with potential to yield genetic and neurobiological insights into adult ADHD.

Abstract
We investigated the viability of spectral filters as an adjunctive treatment for adults with both ADHD and visual processing difficulties. Fifty-nine adults (age 18-50), diagnosed with both ADHD and visual stress received either spectral filters (n = 39) or no intervention (n = 20) to address visual processing difficulties. We administered the MOXO d-CPT, a computer based continuous performance test, before the intervention and one hour after the intervention to assess any short-term change in the participants' attention profile. We used the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) before and 3-6 months after the intervention to assess any long-term intervention impact after 3-6 months. The intervention group had significant short- and long-term improvements in overall attention compared to the control group (X2(1, N = 59) = 20.10, p < .001). On the DSM-5, 49% of participants with short term and 64% with long-term intervention no longer met criteria for an ADHD diagnosis. Findings suggest that spectral filters may be an adjunctive treatment for many adults suffering from perceptually-based attention issues common to visual stress and ADHD.

Abstract
AIMS This study investigates the impact of maternal diabetes on the expression of α2-adrenergic and M2 muscarinic receptors in the primary visual cortex of male offspring born to diabetic rats. MAIN METHODS In adult female rats, a single dose of intraperitoneal streptozotocin (STZ) was used to induce diabetes (Diabetic group). Diabetes was controlled with insulin in the Insulin-treated group. Female rats in the control group received normal saline instead of STZ. Male newborns were euthanized at P0, P7, and P14, and the expression of α2-adrenergic and M2 muscarinic receptors in the primary visual cortex was determined using immunohistochemistry (IHC). KEY FINDINGS The study showed that α2-adrenergic and M2 muscarinic receptors were significantly suppressed in all layers of the primary visual cortex of male neonates born to diabetic rats at P0, P7, and P14 compared to the control group. The highest expression was for the Con group at P14 and the lowest one was in the Dia group at P0 for both receptors. The insulin treatment in diabetic mothers modulated the expression of these receptors to normal levels in their newborns. SIGNIFICANCE The results demonstrate maternal diabetes decreases the expression of α2-adrenergic and M2 muscarinic receptors in the primary visual cortex of male offspring born to diabetic rats. Insulin treatment can offset these effects of diabetes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The present study analyzed the reciprocal relationships between four common pediatric ophthalmic diseases (i.e., hyperopia, myopia, astigmatism, and strabismus) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children. METHODS This study enrolled 86,028 children with ADHD and 1,798,673 children without ADHD in the Taiwan Maternal and Child Health Database who were born at any time from 2004 to 2017. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate the bidirectional relationships of the four ophthalmic diseases with ADHD in children after adjusting for age, sex, and gestational age at birth. Survival curves for time-to-event variables were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method, and the log-rank test was used to compare the curves. RESULTS The results indicated that ADHD significantly predicted the occurrence of hyperopia, myopia, astigmatism, and strabismus. Furthermore, hyperopia, myopia, astigmatism, and strabismus significantly predicted the occurrence of ADHD. The time between enrollment and ADHD diagnosis was shorter for patients with ophthalmic diseases than for the control group, and the time between enrollment and ophthalmic disease diagnosis was also shorter for ADHD patients than for the control group. Sex differences were found in the associations between ADHD and ophthalmic diseases. CONCLUSION Clinicians should monitor children with ADHD for hyperopia, myopia, astigmatism, and strabismus to ensure appropriate treatment, and vice versa.

Abstract
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting approximately 5% of children worldwide. The causal mechanisms of ADHD remain unclear as the aetiology of this disorder seems to be multifactorial. One research field addresses the impact on lipid metabolism and particularly serum lipid fractions on the development of ADHD symptoms. This post hoc analysis aimed to investigate long-term changes in serum levels of lipoproteins in children and adolescents with ADHD and controls. Data of German children and adolescents from the nationwide and representative "Kinder- und Jugendgesundheitssurvey (KiGGS)" study were analysed at baseline and at a ten-year follow-up. At the two time points, participants in the control group were compared with those in the ADHD group, both before and after propensity score matching. Differences in total cholesterol, low-density lipoproteins (LDL), high-density lipoproteins (HDL) and triglycerides were assessed between matched children with and without ADHD. In addition, subgroups with versus without methylphenidate use were compared at both time points. At baseline before matching, there were no significant differences for lipid parameters between participants in the ADHD group (n = 1,219) and the control group (n = 9,741): total cholesterol (Exp(ß) = 0.999, 95%-CI 0.911-1.094, p = .979), LDL (Exp(ß) = 0.967, 95%-CI 0.872-1.071, p = .525), HDL (Exp(ß) = 1.095, 95%-CI 0.899-1.331, p = .366) and triglycerides (Exp(ß) = 1.038, 95%-CI 0.948-1.133, p = .412). Propensity score matching confirmed the non-significant differences between the ADHD and non-ADHD group at baseline. At the 10-year follow-up, n = 571 participants fulfilled complete inclusion criteria, among them 268 subjects were classified as ADHD. The two groups did not significantly differ in lipid fractions, neither cross-sectionally nor with regard to long-term changes. There was also no significant difference between methylphenidate subgroups. In this sample of children and adolescents we could not reveal any significant associations between serum lipid fractions and the diagnosis of ADHD, neither cross-sectionally nor longitudinally; even when methylphenidate use was considered. Thus, further studies using larger sample sizes are required to investigate putative long-term changes in serum lipid fractions related to ADHD.
