Abstract
Sex differences in schizophrenia have been noted across domains such as alexithymia and cognitive function; however, how they interact remains unclear. This study aimed to explore sex differences in the relationship between alexithymia and cognitive function in patients with chronic schizophrenia. A total of 695 patients (464 males and 231 females) who met the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia were recruited in this cross-sectional study. Demographic and clinical data were collected using self-reported questionnaires. We assessed alexithymia using the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), cognitive function using the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS), and psychiatric symptoms using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). Male schizophrenic patients have to read 56.7% of the alexithymia rate, and higher scores on the RBANS visuospatial/constructional, language and total score than female patients (all P < 0.05).Alexithymia patients had lower language than non-alexithymia patients(P = 0.001). In addition, there were significant differences of the correlation scores for men and women in immediate memory and delayed memory (P < 0.001). Our results indicate that there are sex differences in the prevalence comorbid alexithymia symptoms, as well as their association with cognitive function, in patients with schizophrenia. However, a cross-sectional design could not establish definitive causative associations between sex and alexithymia or cognitive function.

Abstract
Cognitive deficits and overweight are prominent challenges in the treatment of psychosis, which have a direct impact on patients' quality of life. We aim to determine whether there is an association of overweight with cognitive performance and whether there are sex differences in this association. We included 170 individuals with first-episode psychosis (FEP) (mean age 23.08 years, 32.9% females) attending an early intervention service who underwent clinical, biometric, and cognitive assessments by the MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery. A set of two-way analyses of covariance (ANCOVAs) were conducted for each cognitive test. Sex, overweight, and their interaction were included as factors. Nearly 34% of the participants were overweight without differences between males and females. The excess of weight did not exert any main effect on cognition; however, overweight females performed significantly worse than non-overweight females in processing speed, verbal learning and memory, reasoning and problem-solving, and global cognitive function, whereas in males, there were no differences. Our findings highlight that sex matters in the study of metabolic and cognitive factors in FEP to develop targeted interventions based on sex perspectives.

Abstract
Background Both overweight and cognitive deficits are common among people with schizophrenia (SZ) and schizoaffective disorder. The results in earlier studies have been inconsistent on whether overweight is associated with cognitive deficits in psychotic disorders. Aims Our aim in this study was to detect possible associations between obesity and cognitive deficits among study participants with SZ and schizoaffective disorder. Methods The study sample included 5382 participants with a clinical diagnosis of SZ or schizoaffective disorder selected from the Finnish SUPER study. Obesity was measured both with body-mass index and waist circumference. The cognitive performance was evaluated with two tests from the Cambridge automated neuropsychological test battery: Reaction time was evaluated with the 5-choice serial reaction time task. Visual memory was evaluated with the paired associative learning test. The final analysis included a total sample of 4498 participants applicable for the analysis of the reaction time and 3967 participants for the analysis of the visual memory. Results Obesity measured with body-mass index was associated with better performance in reaction time task among both female and male participants. Among male participants, overweight was associated with better performance in the visual memory test. The waist circumference was not associated with cognitive measures. Conclusions The results suggest that obesity in people with SZ or schizoaffective disorder might not be associated with cognitive deficits but instead with better cognitive performance. The results were opposite from earlier literature on the general population. More research is required to better understand whether the results might be partly caused by the differences in the etiology of obesity between the general population and people with SZ.

Abstract
There is increasing evidence that sex differences exist in many clinical manifestations of patients with schizophrenia, including suicidal ideation (SI) and neurocognitive function. The present study was performed to explore the sex differences in the association between SI and neurocognitive function in Chinese patients with schizophrenia. A total of 1188 inpatients with schizophrenia were recruited from multicenter psychiatric hospitals. The Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) was utilized to evaluate the neurocognitive function of all patients. The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) was utilized to assess the psychopathology of patients. The Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation (BSSI) was used to assess the severity of SI. In male patients, the suicide risk score was significantly associated with PANSS negative symptoms (r = 0.167, p = 0.043), visuospatial subscale (r = - 0.261, p = 0.001), and RBANS total scores (r = - 0.172, p = 0.037). Furthermore, multivariate linear regression analysis showed that the visuospatial subscale (β = - 0.490, t = - 3.273, p = 0.001) was independently associated with the suicide risk score in male patients. In female patients, the suicide risk score was significantly correlated with PANSS positive symptoms (r = 0.249, p = 0.021), negative symptoms (r = 0.394, p < 0.001), general psychopathology (r = 0.276, p = 0.01) and PANSS total score (r = 0.365, p = 0.001). Multivariate linear regression analysis showed that PANSS negative symptoms (β = 1.849, t = 3.933, p = 0.001) were significantly associated with suicide risk scores in female patients. Our findings indicate that there are sex differences in the association between SI and neurocognitive function in patients with schizophrenia. Based on the findings of our study, gender-specific prevention and intervention strategies may make a difference in reducing SI in Chinese schizophrenia patients.

Abstract
Aims This study aims to explore the gender differences in cognitive improvements after two months of atypical antipsychotic treatment in first episode schizophrenia (FES). Methods 82 patients with FES, including 50 male patients and 32 female patients, were enrolled in the present study. Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB) were respectively conducted to evaluate the clinical symptoms and cognitive function of patients with FES at baseline and after treatment. Repeated measure ANOVA was performed to compare gender differences in cognitive domains scores between baseline and 2-month follow-up. Stepwise liner regression model was performed to explore the effect factors of cognitive improvements in patients. Results There was no significant difference in age of onset, education years, PANSS scores, duration of untreated psychosis and Olanzapine equivalent doses between male and female patients (all p > 0.05). In the comparisons of cognition function, male patients exhibited better performance in social cognition compared with female patients at baseline (t = 3.20, p < 0.05). After treatment, improvements of attention/vigilance and working memory were both found in male patients and female patients (attention/vigilance, F = 11.867, p < 0.05; working memory, F = 18.265, p < 0.05). In addition, improvement of speed of information processing was only found in female patients (F = 11.65, p < 0.01). Significant interaction between time and gender was found in speed information of processing (F = 4.140, p = 0.045). Stepwise liner regression model revealed that improvements of negative symptoms promote improvements of cognitive function in female patients (all p < 0.05). Conclusions Our findings revealed gender differences of cognitive improvements in patients with FES after 2-month treatment. It provides new evidence for gender differences in cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia, and also provides preliminary clues for further individualized cognitive intervention strategies.

Abstract
Accumulating evidence suggests that imbalanced oxidative stress (OS) may contribute to the mechanism of schizophrenia. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the associations of OS parameters with psychopathological symptoms in male chronically medicated schizophrenia (CMS) and treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS) patients. Levels of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), hydroxyl radical (·OH), peroxidase (POD), α-tocopherol (α-toc), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-1 (TIMP-1) were assayed in males with CMS and TRS, and matched healthy controls. Schizophrenia symptoms were assessed using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). The results demonstrated significant differences in the variables H2O2 (F = 5.068, p = 0.008), ·OH (F = 31.856, p < 0.001), POD (F = 14.043, p < 0.001), α-toc (F = 3.711, p = 0.027), TAC (F = 24.098, p < 0.001), and MMP-9 (F = 3.219, p = 0.043) between TRS and CMS patients and healthy controls. For TRS patients, H2O2 levels were correlated to the PANSS positive subscale (r = 0.386, p = 0.032) and smoking (r = -0,412, p = 0.021), while TAC was significantly negatively correlated to the PANSS total score (r = -0.578, p = 0.001) and POD and TAC levels were positively correlated to body mass index (r = 0.412 and 0.357, p = 0.021 and 0.049, respectively). For patients with CMS, ·OH levels and TAC were positively correlated to the PANSS general subscale (r = 0.308, p = 0.031) and negatively correlated to the PANSS total score (r = -0.543, p < 0.001). Furthermore, H2O2, α-toc, and ·OH may be protective factors against TRS, and POD was a risk factor. Patients with CMS and TRS exhibit an imbalance in OS, thus warranting future investigations.

Abstract
Objective Although the adverse effects of obesity in schizophrenia are documented, there is limited research exists on the implications for untreated initial schizophrenia. Our investigation aimed to explore the connections between BMI and cognitive function in first-episode drug-naïve (FEDN)schizophrenia. Methods We enrolled 143 FEDN schizophrenia patients, and collected data on their body mass index, fasting blood glucose and lipid levels. Cognitive function was measured with the MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB). Using correlation and regression analysis to assess the relationship between BMI and cognitive performance. Results The prevalence rate of overweight plus obesity in FEDN schizophrenia patients was 33.57%. Patients with FEDN schizophrenia exhibited extensive cognitive impairment, and those who were overweight/obesity demonstrated more severe impairments in working memory and visual learning when compared to normal/under weight counterparts. Correlation analysis indicated a negative association between working memory and BMI and TG, as well as a link between visual learning and BMI and LDL-C. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that a higher BMI predicted a decrease in working memory in FEDN schizophrenia patients. Conclusion Our results indicate that the rate of overweight plus obesity is high in FEDN schizophrenia patients, and there is an association between BMI and cognitive function in schizophrenia, particularly in relation to working memory.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Sex differences have been observed in many aspects of schizophrenia, including cognitive deficits. Despite extensive research into the relationship between metabolic factors and cognitive deficits in schizophrenia, few studies have explored the potential sex difference in their association. METHODS We recruited 358 schizophrenia patients and 231 healthy controls. The participants underwent measurements of body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, blood pressure, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and fasting blood glucose. Metabolic risk factors included abdominal obesity, hypertension, hyperglycemia, and dyslipidemia. A collection of these metabolic risk factors has been defined as metabolic syndrome. These diagnoses were based on the criteria of the National Cholesterol Education Program's Adult Treatment Panel III. Cognitive performance was measured using the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS). A descriptive analysis, difference analysis, and linear regression model were used to identify the metabolic risk factors for cognitive function in schizophrenia. RESULTS Our findings revealed sex differences in the rate of abdominal obesity and hypertension in schizophrenic patients. Additionally, we observed sex differences in the association between metabolic risk factors and cognitive impairment in schizophrenia. Specifically, hyperglycemia was associated with the immediate memory index score of RBANS in male patients, while dyslipidemia was associated with language, attention, delayed memory index scores, and RBANS total score in female patients. CONCLUSION Our results suggest that sex should be considered when evaluating the impact of metabolic disorders on the cognitive function of schizophrenic patients. Moreover, our study identifies hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia as potential targets for precise treatment by sex stratification, which could benefit the improvement of cognitive impairment in schizophrenic patients.

Abstract
Gender differences in clinical and psychosocial aspects of schizophrenia have been widely reported. Findings have not always been consistent, and some of them need further research. In a large sample of community dwelling persons with schizophrenia, we investigated gender differences in clinical, cognitive and functional indices, as well as their changes over a 4-year follow-up and their impact on real-life functioning. Gender differences in personal resources, cognitive and functional indices were explored also in a sample of healthy controls. Men with respect to women had an earlier age of illness onset, a worse premorbid adjustment in the academic domain, more severe avolition, expressive deficit and positive symptoms, lower prevalence of comorbidity for affective disorders, less frequent use of two coping strategies ('religion' and 'use of emotional support') and more frequent positive history of substance and alcohol abuse. In addition, men were more impaired in verbal learning, while women in reasoning/problem solving. Some patterns of gender differences observed in healthy controls were not confirmed in patients. Men's disadvantages in the clinical picture did not translate into a worse outcome. This finding may be related to the complex interplay of several factors acting as predictors or mediators of outcome.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the weight gain, mental symptoms and self-esteem in patients with schizophrenia undergoing treatment at a community mental health center (CMHC). The study is conducted with 103 schizophrenic patients between 01.08.2021 – 01.02.2022. The data was collected with Personal Information Form, Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale, and Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). 35% of the patients are women, 43.7% are single, and 48.5% are between the ages of 45-64. There was no significant increase between the patients’ weigh measurement value in the first month (x̄=81.185) and the measurement value at the end of six months (x̄=81.320). The decrease in the self-esteem scale mean score at the end of six months (x̄=1.317) was not found significant, when compared to the self-esteem scale mean score in the first month (x̄=1452). The PANSS General Psychopathology subscale mean score was found to be statistically lower at the end of the six-month follow-up (x̄=26.418), compared to the first month mean score (x̄=27.136). There was no significant difference between weight gain, self-esteem, and PANSS positive/negative symptoms in the six-month follow-up of patients with schizophrenia enrolled in CMHC. A significant difference was discovered between the first and sixth-month measurements in PANSS general psychopathology symptoms. It is detected that gender, working status, atypical and mixed antipsychotics use, smoking status, and changes in daytime sleeping habits affect mental symptoms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Cognitive dysfunction and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are common in methamphetamine patients. However, few studies have investigated the cognitive performance of methamphetamine patients with PTSD. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of comorbid PTSD on cognitive function in Chinese male methamphetamine patients. METHODS We analyzed 464 methamphetamine patients and 156 healthy volunteers. The PTSD Screening Scale (PCL-5) was used to assess PTSD and the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) was used to assess cognitive function. RESULTS Compared with healthy controls, methamphetamine patients had more cognitive dysfunction in immediate memory, visuospatial/constructional, language, attention and delayed memory. Moreover, methamphetamine patients with PTSD had less cognitive dysfunction in immediate memory, attention, and delayed memory than methamphetamine patients without PTSD. Further stepwise regression analysis showed that PTSD alterations in arousal and reactivity cluster were risk predictors for language, and PTSD negative alteration in cognition and mood cluster were risk predictors for delayed memory. CONCLUSIONS Our results indicate that methamphetamine patients without PTSD have poorer cognitive dysfunction than those with PTSD. Some demographic and PTSD symptom clusters are protective or risk factors for cognitive dysfunction in methamphetamine patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Post-evacuation return after mandatory hospital evacuation due to complicated disasters is often overlooked and not well-discussed. AIMS In this study, we explored the factors which are related to the ease or difficulty of the post-evacuation return to Fukushima prefecture of psychiatric inpatients who had been evacuated to hospitals outside the prefecture because of the Great East Japan Earthquake (GEJE) and subsequent Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident. METHOD This retrospective cohort study included evacuated psychiatric hospital inpatients who were registered in the Matching Project for Community Transition (MPCT) and had been traced until July 31, 2019. A total of 531 patients were included for the analyses. Univariable and multivariable analysis were conducted to detect the patients' traits including their psychiatric/physical backgrounds which were associated with their outcome - the time from GEJE to the date of return to Fukushima. RESULTS Over half of the patients returned to Fukushima. In the multivariable analysis, the patients' gender (male), age (older), and psychiatric diagnoses of schizophrenia, schizotypal and delusional disorders (ICD-10, F20-29) showed lower hazard ratio (HR) and statistically significant association with the difficulties of post-evacuation return. Meanwhile, disorders of psychological development (F80-89), diseases of the nervous (G00-99, except G40-41) and genitourinary (N00-99) systems showed higher HR and statistically significant association with the ease of return. CONCLUSIONS The specific characteristics of the psychiatric inpatients including their psychiatric and physical status are associated with their post-evacuation return to their hometown. These results indicated that the evacuated hospitals' practitioners and staffs from the MPCT understood the necessity of the earlier return of inpatients to their hometown. Moreover, clinicians should pay more attention to some symptoms unique to psychiatric patients which contributed to their difficulties in returning safely or expressing their hope to return.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bipolar disorder (BD) and schizophrenia (SC) have many similarities in clinical manifestations. The acute phase of BD has psychotic symptoms, while SC also has emotional symptoms during the onset, which suggests that there is some uncertainty in distinguishing BD and SC through clinical symptoms. AIM To explore the characteristics of brain functional activities and cognitive impairment between BD and SC. METHODS Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) test was performed on patients in drug-naïve BD and SC (50 subjects in each group), and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) scanning was performed meanwhile. Rs-fMRI data were routinely preprocessed, and the value of the fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF) was calculated. Then each part of the scores of the RBANS and the characteristics of brain function activities were compared between the two groups. Finally used Pearson correlation to analyze the correlation between cognition and brain function. RESULTS (1) Compared with BD group, all parts of RBANS scores in SC group decreased; (2) The left inferior occipital gyrus (IOG, peak coordinates - 30, -87, -15; t = 4.78, voxel size = 31, Alphasim correction) and the right superior temporal gyrus (STG, peak coordinates 51, -12, 0; t = 5.08, voxel size = 17, AlphaSim correction) were the brain areas with significant difference in fALFF values between BD and SC. Compared with SC group, the fALFF values of the left IOG and the right STG in BD group were increased (p < 0.05); (3) Pearson correlation analysis showed that the visuospatial construction score was positively correlated with the fALFF values of the left IOG and the right STG (rleft IOG = 0.304, p = 0.003; rright STG = 0.340, p = 0.001); The delayed memory (figure recall) score was positively correlated with the fALFF value of the left IOG (rleft IOG = 0.207, p = 0.044). DISCUSSION The cognitive impairment of SC was more serious than BD. The abnormal activities of the left IOG and the right STG may be the core brain region to distinguish BD and SC, and are closely related to cognitive impairment, which provide neuroimaging basis for clinical differential diagnosis and explore the pathological mechanism of cognitive impairment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is a prevalent emotion disorder which is thought to be due to neuronal structural alterations and/or functional impairment within specific brain regions. Several studies have shown that microRNAs are involved in the pathogenesis of depression. As a Chinese herbal formula, Xiaoyaosan (XYS) could have antidepressive effects, although the mechanisms associated with microRNAs are poorly understood. PURPOSE In this study, we investigated whether inhibition of the miR-200a/b-3p/NR3C1 pathway in the prefrontal cortex is involved in the anti-neuronal apoptosis and anti-stress effects of XYS and then further delineated the underlying mechanism. METHODS To evaluate the efficacy of XYS in relieving stress behaviors and altering the expression of miRNAs involved in the regulation of these behaviors in vivo, a chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) rodent model and RNA-seq were performed. Primary cortical neurons were used to evaluate the molecular function of miR-200a/b-3p and detect the in vitro neuroprotective function of paeoniflorin, which is one of the main components of XYS. To investigate the function of miR-200a/b-3p in stress behaviors, stereotactic microinjection of AAV2/9-Syn-miR-200a/b-3p was performed to deliver the treatment to the rat mPFC. RESULTS XYS reduced the anxiety and depression-like behaviors associated with chronic stress and reduced the expression of miR-200a/b-3p and neuronal apoptosis in the prefrontal cortex (PFC). The overexpression of miR-200a/b-3p in primary cortical neurons reduced the expression of the target gene NR3C1, increased the protein expression of cleaved caspase-3 and Bax, and decreased the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2. One of the active ingredients of XYS, paeoniflorin, can inhibit miR-200a/b-3p-mediated apoptosis of primary neurons and abnormal expression of apoptosis-related proteins. After overexpressing miR-200a/b-3p in vivo (vmPFC), the rats eventually showed significant anxiety-like behaviors similar to those caused by chronic stress. CONCLUSION Our findings indicate that XYS can inhibit the CUMS-induced expression of miR-200a/b-3p, regulate miR-200a/b-3p/NR3C1 signaling in the PFC caused by chronic stress, and reduce neuronal apoptosis and stress-related behaviors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Few investigations have been carried out on metabolic syndrome in antipsychotic- naïve patients with schizophrenia. METHODS Our primary objective was to compare the prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome (MetS), as defined by the National Cholesterol Education Program, Adult Treatment Panel III in 2001 (NCEP-ATP III), between a Spanish cohort of 303 drug-naïve patients with a first episode of psychosis (FEP) without any previous cardiovascular condition, and 153 healthy individuals. RESULTS Participants included 303 patients with FEP (M:F 53:46) and 153 control subjects (M:F 56:43). The mean and standard deviation ages were 31(9.38) and 29 (7.57) years in the study and control groups respectively (F = 4.09; p = 0.93). We found that the prevalence of MetS in drug-naïve patients with FEP (5.6 %) was similar to the prevalence of MetS in age-sex matched controls (5.12 %). However, 60.7 % of patients with FEP met at least one of the five MetS components, while among the control subjects only 36.5 % met at least one component. Additionally, we found that other factors not included among the operational definition of MetS, but still important in cardiovascular risk, were also altered. CONCLUSION FEP patients have a greater risk of presenting at least one altered MetS component than healthy controls which could indicate the need of development of screening methods detecting cardiovascular risk. Likewise, gender differences in metabolic components such as waist circumference, which is a predictor of cardiovascular events have been found. Similarly, research should focus on metabolic risk predictors that include not only MetS, but also specific parameters for the early psychosis population.

Abstract
The proposed pathogenesis of neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus (NPSLE) mainly includes ischemia and neuroinflammation mechanisms. Protein encoded by Proteoglycan 2 (PRG2) mRNA is involved in the immune process related to eosinophils, also being found in the placenta and peripheral blood of pregnant women. We evaluated the correlation between PRG2 and NPSLE for the first time and found that PRG2 protein is overexpressed in the serum of patients with NPSLE and correlated with the SLE disease activity index (SLEDAI) subset scores of psychosis. Moreover, we investigated the correlation between hippocampal PRG2 level and hippocampally dependent learning and memory ability in MRL/lpr mice, and discovered that the number of PRG2+GFAP+ astrocytes in the cortex and hypothalamus and the number of PRG2+IBA-1+ microglia in the hippocampus and cortex significantly increased in the MRL/lpr mice. These data provided a reference for the follow-up exploration of the role of PRG2 in SLE or other diseases.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Normative data are essential for neuropsychological evaluations, but they are scarce for Mandarin-speaking populations, despite Mandarin being the language with the most native speakers. Several normative data studies have been reported in recent years for Mandarin speakers, who reside in different countries/regions (e.g., mainland China, Taiwan, and Singapore, etc.). This review aims to serve as a reference guide to appropriate norms when working with a Mandarin-speaking patient and to guide future endeavors in test validation and development in areas where studies to date fall short. METHOD We conducted a systematic review utilizing the PsycInfo, PubMed, and China Knowledge Resource Integrated databases as well as additional literature search through citations. We performed evaluations of the existing norms based on their test selection, cognitive domains covered, sample size, language, regions of participant recruitment, stratification by age/gender/education levels, and reporting of other psychometric properties. We focused on articles that included performance-based tests for adults but excluded those with purely clinical norms or from commercial publishers. RESULTS We reviewed 1155 articles found through literature search and identified 43 articles reporting normative data for this population that met our inclusion criteria. Sixty-five distinctive tests and 127 versions were covered. The results are presented within two detailed tables organized by articles and tests, respectively. CONCLUSIONS We discussed the strengths and limitations of these normative reports. Practitioners are recommended to utilize normative data that most closely approximate a test-taker's cultural and demographic backgrounds. Limitations of the current review are also discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A large number of studies have shown that the pathophysiology of schizophrenia may be involved in sensory gating that appears to be P50 inhibition. However, few studies have investigated the relationship between clinical symptoms, cognitive impairment and sensory gating disorders in patients with first-episode schizophrenia. The purpose of this study was to explore the sex differences in the relationship between clinical symptoms, cognitive impairment and P50 inhibition defects in patients with first-episode schizophrenia, which has not been reported. METHODS 130 patients with first-episode schizophrenia (53 males and 77 females) and 189 healthy controls (87 males and 102 females) participated in the study. Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) was used to evaluate the patients' psychopathological symptoms, and the 64-channel electroencephalogram (EEG) system was used to record the P50 inhibition. RESULTS Male patients had higher PANSS negative symptom, general psychopathology, cognitive factor and total scores than female patients (all p < 0.01). The S1 amplitude was smaller in male than female patients (all p < 0.05). Multiple regression analysis showed that in male patients, S1 latency was contributor to negative symptoms, while S1 latency, S2 latency, age, and smoking status were contributors to cognitive factor (all p < 0.05). In female patients, no P50 component was found to be an independent contributor to PANSS scores (all p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Our results indicate that there is a sex difference in the relationship between clinical symptoms, cognitive impairment and P50 inhibition defects in Chinese Han patients with first-episode schizophrenia.

Abstract
This study was a 24-week non-randomized controlled trial aimed at investigating the effects of lifestyle education by sex in patients with schizophrenia. The data was collected and analyzed for 75 subjects at five facilities in Aomori, Japan. Mean weight and BMI decreased in both biologically male and female subjects over a 24-Week study period in the Intervention group, but were maintenance or increase in the control Group. Although, when compared with the control group by ANCOVA (Analysis of Covariance), there were significant differences in body weight, BMI, and body fat percentage in the biologically male participants in the Intervention group, but not in the females. For the biologically males in the Intervention group, sex differences were speculated to affect weight loss strategies, such as using a pedometer to incorporate walking into their daily routine. Thus, when implementing lifestyle improvement education program, it is recommended to implement a program that considers sex differences.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Schizophrenia is a complex mental illness with significant sex differences. Cognitive impairment is common in patients with schizophrenia, even in remission. This study was designed to examine the sex differences in the relationship between cognitive impairment and clinical correlations with first-episode drug-naïve (FEDN) schizophrenia. METHODS 93 FEDN patients (male/female = 45/48) and 160 controls (male/female = 74/86) were enrolled to compare the sex differences in cognitive functions measured by the MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB). Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) were used to evaluate patients' clinical symptoms. We compared cognitive impairment with sociodemographic characteristics and measures of different genders, as well as group-by-sex interactions. RESULTS Our results showed that male patients had significantly lower scores for symbol coding, digital sequence, and verbal learning than female patients, while the healthy controls showed similar sex differences. In female patients, multiple linear regression analysis confirmed that PANSS negative symptoms and general psychopathology scores, HAMD total score, and education level were independent contributors to MCCB total score. In male patients, only education was an independent contributor to MCCB total score. CONCLUSIONS These findings revealed significant sex differences in cognitive impairments and clinical symptoms in FEDN, which will be worthy of a follow-up study of schizophrenia in the future.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with antipsychotic-naïve first-episode (ANFE) schizophrenia (SZ) can help clarify many confounding factors in determining sex differences in antipsychotic drug induced weight gain and its association with symptom improvement. METHODS This 8-week longitudinal trial of ANFE patients with SZ enrolled 526 patients and 313 healthy controls. We evaluated bodyweight and the efficacy of antipsychotics on the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) at baseline and at the end of week 8. RESULTS Males and females after treatment showed no sex difference in weight gain, BMI increase, and percentage of weight gain. However, at baseline, male patients had more positive symptoms than female patients, and decreases in positive symptoms, general psychopathology, and total PANSS scores were less in male than female patients. Adjusting for confounding factors using multiple linear regression confirmed that weight gain was significantly associated with these decreases in PANSS symptoms only in men not women. CONCLUSIONS The relationship between weight gain and symptom reduction after 8 weeks of antipsychotic treatment exists only in male patients with ANFE SZ and not in female patients.

Abstract
Although metabolic disorders are common in schizophrenia, few studies investigated sex differences in metabolic disorder. This study aimed to examine the sex differences in the clinical correlates of metabolic disorders and MetS in patients with first-episode drug-naïve (FEDN) schizophrenia. A total of 257 FEDN schizophrenia patients and 118 controls were recruited. Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) and blood pressure were measured. Fasting blood samples were drawn to detect triglycerides, cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLC), blood glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and insulin. The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) was applied to assess the clinical symptoms. There was sex difference in the prevalence of high BMI and dyslipidemia of schizophrenia patients. Female patients had lower prevalence of high BMI (p = 0.03) and hypertriglyceridemia (p = 0.006), but had higher prevalence of hypo-HDLC (p = 0.005), compared with male patients. Further, there were sex differences in the relationship between metabolic parameters and psychopathological dimensions. In male patients, WC was associated with positive symptoms and negative symptoms (r = 0.26, p Bonferroni = 0.02; r = 0.26, p Bonferroni = 0.02). In female patients, BMI (r = 0.26, p Bonferroni = 0.01), WC (r = 0.30, p Bonferroni = 0.004) and HAb1c were associated with positive symptoms (r = 0.27, p Bonferroni = 0.008). Insulin (r = 0.24, p Bonferroni = 0.02; r = 0.23, p Bonferroni = 0.04) and HOMA-IR (r = 0.29, p Bonferroni = 0.004; r = 0.25, p Bonferroni = 0.02) were associated with positive symptoms and general psychopathology symptoms. The contribution of clinical and metabolic components to MetS was almost same between male and female patients. Our study demonstrates sex difference in metabolic disorder patterns in schizophrenia patients.

Abstract
Background: Schizophrenia is a disorder with considerable heterogeneity in course and outcomes, which is in part related to the patients' sex. Studies report a link between serum lipids, body mass index (BMI), and therapeutic response. However, the role of sex in these relationships is poorly understood. In a cross-sectional sample of first-episode psychosis (FEP) patients, we investigated if the relationship between serum lipid levels (total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C, and triglycerides), BMI, and symptoms differs between the sexes. Methods: We included 435 FEP patients (males: N = 283, 65%) from the ongoing Thematically Organized Psychosis (TOP) study. Data on clinical status, antipsychotics, lifestyle, serum lipid levels, and BMI were obtained. The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and the Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia (CDSS) were used to assess psychotic and depressive symptoms. General linear models were employed to examine the relationship between metabolic variables and symptomatology. Results: We observed a female-specific association between serum HDL-C levels and negative symptoms (B = -2.24, p = 0.03) and between triglycerides levels (B = 1.48, p = 0.04) and BMI (B = 0.27, p = 0.001) with depressive symptoms. When controlling for BMI, only the association between serum HDL-C levels and negative symptoms remained significant. Moreover, the HDL-C and BMI associations remained significant after controlling for demography, lifestyle, and illness-related factors. Conclusion: We found a relationship between metabolic factors and psychiatric symptoms in FEP patients that was sex-dependent.

Abstract
An extensive literature regarding gender differences relevant to several aspects of schizophrenia is nowadays available. It includes some robust findings as well as some inconsistencies. In the present review, we summarize the literature on gender differences in schizophrenia relevant to clinical and social outcome as well as their determinants, focusing on clinical variables, while gender differences on biological factors which may have an impact on the outcome of the disorder were not included herewith. Consistent findings include, in male with respect to female patients, an earlier age of illness onset limited to early- and middle-onset schizophrenia, a worse premorbid functioning, a greater severity of negative symptoms, a lower severity of affective symptoms and a higher rate of comorbid alcohol/substance abuse. Discrepant findings have been reported on gender differences in positive symptoms and in social and non-social cognition, as well as in functional outcome and rates of recovery. In fact, despite the overall finding of a more severe clinical picture in males, this does not seem to translate into a worse outcome. From the recent literature emerges that, although some findings on gender differences in schizophrenia are consistent, there are still aspects of clinical and functional outcome which need clarification by means of further studies taking into account several methodological issues.

Abstract
In this diffusion tensor imaging study, we explored the associations of body mass index (BMI) with white matter microstructure in first-episode schizophrenia spectrum disorder patients (n = 69) versus healthy controls (n = 93). We focused on fractional anisotropy (FA) measures for fronto-limbic white matter tracts known to connect brain regions which form part of a "core eating network". Secondary objectives included the associations of body mass with global illness severity, psychopathology and depressive symptoms. In a multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) model, there was a significant interaction between BMI and group (patient versus control) across the fronto-limbic white matter tracts of interest (F(1,155)= 4.91, p = 0.03). In a sub-analysis, BMI was significantly inversely correlated with FA measures for the genu and body of the corpus callosum, left and right tapetum, and left superior fronto-occipital fasciculus in controls. In patients, BMI was significantly positively correlated with white matter FA for the genu of the corpus callosum and left tapetum. Lower BMI was significantly correlated with more severe negative symptoms, as was earlier age of illness onset. Body mass may be differentially associated with fronto-limbic white matter microstructure in first-episode schizophrenia spectrum disorder compared to controls.

Abstract
Patients with schizophrenia (SCZ) have cognitive impairments across several domains. Cognition decline is related to the complex interrelationship between brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and redox system imbalance. However, the effect of sex on cognitive impairment and biomarkers has not been fully studied in patients with drug-naïve first episode (DNFE) SCZ. 327 DNFE SCZ patients and 391 healthy controls were recruited, and the levels of BDNF and malondialdehyde (MDA) and the activities of total SOD, Mn-SOD, CuZn-SOD enzymes were measured. Cognitive function was measured by using the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological status (RBANS) and clinical symptoms by the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). Patients performed worse on most cognitive tasks than controls, but there was no significant sex difference in cognitive function between patients and controls. Further analysis showed that a sex difference in MDA was found in controls rather than patients, indicating that MDA levels in men were higher than those in women in controls. Moreover, the Mn-SOD was significantly correlated with attention, language and RBANS total scores only in male patients. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that the interaction between BDNF and Mn-SOD or SOD was associated with RBANS language index score in male patients. Our results suggest that the interrelationship of BDNF with antioxidant mechanisms may contribute to the pathological mechanisms underlying cognitive deficits only in male DNFE patients with SCZ, but not in female patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE There is evidence that microRNA-195 (miR-195) is associated with schizophrenia (SZ) and cognition, but the relationship between miR-195 and cognitive impairment in SZ is still unknown. Sex differences in both microRNA (miRNA) expression and cognition were found in SZ. We aim to investigate whether sex moderates the relationship between miR-195 levels and cognition in SZ. METHODS We recruited 121 drug-free SZ patients and 129 healthy controls. miR-195 expression levels in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were measured using qRT-PCR. The Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) was performed to assess cognitive function. MANCOVA, ANCOVA, correlation analysis and hierarchical linear regression analysis were used to test the effect of sex on the aforementioned variables. RESULTS All RBANS scores significantly decreased in patients compared to healthy controls (all p < 0.001); ANCOVA analysis demonstrated female SZ patients had lower delayed memory score (F = 15.36, p < 0.001) and total score (F = 5.26, p = 0.024) than male patients. There was no diagnosis, sex or sex by diagnosis interaction effect on miR-195 levels (all p > 0.05). Interestingly, correlation analysis showed significant negative association between miR-195 and attention score (r = -0.389, p = 0.019), delayed memory score (r= -0.351, p = 0.036), and total score (r = -0.386, p = 0.020) only in female patients. Hierarchical regression analysis showed sex by miR-195 interaction was a significant predictor of the RBANS total score (ΔR2 = 0.042, F(1, 67) = 4.71, p = 0.033). CONCLUSION Our data indicate that miR-195 is associated with cognitive impairment in female SZ patients, and it may be involved in the underlying mechanism of sex differences in cognitive impairment in SZ.
