Abstract
Background: Numerous studies have highlighted the pivotal role of alterations in the monetary reward system in the development and maintenance of substance use disorder (SUD). Although these alterations have been well documented in various forms of SUD, the electrophysiological mechanisms specific to opioid use disorder (OUD) remain underexplored. Understanding these mechanisms is critical for developing targeted interventions and advancing theories of addiction specific to opioid use.Objectives: To explore abnormalities in monetary reward outcome processing in males with OUD. We hypothesized that control individuals would show higher feedback-related negativity (FRN) to losses, unlike those in the OUD group, where FRN to losses and gains would not differ significantly.Methods: Fifty-seven participants (29 male individuals with OUD [heroin] and 28 male controls) were evaluated. A combination of the monetary incentive delay task (MIDT) and event-related potential (ERP) technology was used to investigate electrophysiological differences in monetary reward feedback processing between the OUD and healthy control groups.Results: We observed a significant interaction between group (control vs. OUD) and monetary outcome (loss vs. gain), indicated by p < .05 and η2p = 0.116. Specifically, control participants showed stronger negative FRN to losses than gains (p < .05), unlike the OUD group (p > .05).Conclusion: This study's FRN data indicate that males with OUD show altered processing of monetary rewards, marked by reduced sensitivity to loss. These findings offer electrophysiological insights into why males with OUD may pursue drugs despite potential economic downsides.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Opioid use disorder is a chronic relapsing disorder. The brain adapts to opioids that are taken for pain treatment or recreational use so that abstinence becomes a true challenge for individuals with opioid use disorder. Studying brain dysfunction at this stage is difficult, and human neuroimaging has provided highly heterogeneous information. METHODS Here, we took advantage of an established mouse model of morphine abstinence together with functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate whole-brain functional connectivity (FC) first at rest and then in response to an acute morphine challenge during image acquisition. RESULTS Hierarchical clustering of seed pair correlation coefficients showed modified FC in abstinent animals, brainwide and regardless of the condition. Seed-to-voxel analysis and random forest classification, performed on data at rest, indicated that the retrosplenial cortex (a core component of the default mode network) and the amygdala (a major aversion center) are the best markers of abstinence, thus validating the translatability of the study. Seed pair network clustering confirmed disruption of a retrosplenial cortex-centered network, reflecting major reorganization of brain FC. The latter analysis also identified a persistent but unreported morphine signature in abstinent mice at rest, which involves cortical and midbrain components and characterizes the enduring morphine footprint. Finally, dynamic FC analysis revealed that the intrascanner acute morphine challenge modified FC faster and more broadly in abstinent animals, demonstrating brainwide adaptations of FC reactivity to an acute opioid challenge. CONCLUSIONS This study used a unique experimental design to demonstrate that a prior history of chronic opioid exposure leaves a durable pharmacological signature on brain communication, with implications for pain management and recovery from opioid use disorder.

Abstract
The parent-infant relationship is critical for socioemotional development and is adversely impacted by perinatal substance use. This systematic review posits that the mechanisms underlying these risks to mother-infant relationships center on 3 primary processes: (1) mothers' childhood maltreatment experiences; (2) attachment styles and consequent internal working models of interpersonal relationships; and (3) perinatal substance use. Further, the review considers the role of hyperkatifeia, or hypersensitivity to negative affect which occurs when people with substance use disorders are not using substances, and which drives the negative reinforcement in addiction. The authors performed a systematic review of articles (published 2000-2022) related to these constructs and their impact on mother-infant relationships and offspring outcomes, including original clinical research articles addressing relationships between these constructs, and excluding case studies, reviews, non-human animal studies, intervention studies, studies with fewer than 30% female-sex participants, clinical guidelines, studies limited to obstetric outcomes, mechanistic/biological studies, and studies with methodological issues precluding interpretation. Overall 1844 articles were screened, 377 were selected for full text review, and data were extracted from 157 articles. Results revealed strong relationships between mothers' childhood maltreatment experiences, less optimal internal working models, and increased risk for perinatal substance use, and importantly, all of these predictors interacted with hyperkatifeia and exerted a marked impact on mother-infant relationships with less data available on offspring outcomes. These data strongly support the need for future studies addressing the additive impact of maternal childhood maltreatment experiences, suboptimal internal working models, and perinatal substance use, with hyperkatifeia as a potential moderator, and their interacting effects on mother-infant socioemotional outcomes.

Abstract
The purpose of this qualitative study is to assess facilitating factors and barriers for medications to treat opioid use disorder (MOUD) initiation among justice-involved individuals in one rural Appalachian community, as well as how those factors may differ across the three types of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved medications. Qualitative interviews were conducted with rural justice-involved individuals (N = 10) with a history of opioid use in the target community. Overall, participants demonstrated knowledge of the different types of MOUD and their pharmacological properties, but limited overall health literacy around opioid use disorder and MOUD treatment. Treatment access was hampered by transportation, time burdens, and costs. Findings call for research into improving health literacy education, training, and resources to decrease stigma and increase access to MOUD, particularly in light of the ongoing opioid crisis. State policies also need to increase access to all FDA medications among justice-involved individuals, as well as supporting a care continuum from facility entry, release, and community re-entry.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Progress have been made in brain function recovery after long-term abstinence in person with heroin addiction (PHA). However, less is known about whether the nucleus accumbens (NAc) white matter pathways can recover in PHA by prolonged abstinence. METHODS Forty-two PHA and Thirty-nine age- and gender- matched healthy controls (HCs) were recruited. Two MRI scans were obtained at baseline (PHA1) and 8-month follow-up (PHA2). We employed tractography atlas-based analysis (TABS) method to investigate fractional anisotropy (FA) changes in NAc fiber tracts (i.e., Insula-NAc, ventral tegmental area (VTA)-NAc, medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC)-NAc) in PHA. A partial least square regression (PLSR) analysis was carried to explore whether FA of NAc fiber tracts can predict longitudinal craving changes. RESULTS Relative to HCs, lower FA was found in the right Insula-NAc and VTA-NAc fiber tracts in PHA1, and PHA2 showed increased FA values in these tracts compared with PHA1. Furthermore, changes of FA of NAc fiber tracts can predict longitudinal craving changes (r = 0.51). Additionally, craving changes can also be predicted from FA changes in the left Insula-NAc (r = 0.601) and VTA-NAc (r = 0.384) fiber alone. CONCLUSIONS Results indicated that the right Insula-NAc and VTA-NAc fiber tracts are potential biomarkers for brain recovery. Prediction of craving changes highlighted the utility of structural markers to inform clinical decision-making of treatment for PHA.

Abstract
Neuroscientists have devoted efforts to explore potential brain recovery after prolonged abstinence in heroin users (HU). However, not much is known about whether frontostriatal circuits can recover after prolonged abstinence in HU. An eight-month longitudinal study was carried out for HU. Two MRI scans were obtained at baseline (HU1) and 8-month follow-up (HU2). The functional and structural connectivities of dorsal and ventral frontostriatal pathways were measured by resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Correlation analyses were employed to reveal the associations between neuroimaging and behavioral changes. Results suggested that relative to healthy controls (HCs), HU1 showed lower fractional anisotropy (FA) in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC)-to-caudate tracts and medial orbitofrontal cortex (mOFC)-to-nucleus accumbens (NAc) tracts as well as decreased RSFC in the left mOFC-NAc circuits. Longitudinal results revealed reduced craving and enhanced cognitive control in HU2 compared with HU1. After prolonged abstinence, HU2 showed increased FA values in the right DLPFC-caudate and mOFC-NAc tracts as well as increased RSFC strength in the bilateral mOFC-NAc circuits compared with HU1. In addition, changes in RSFC and FA values in the right mOFC-NAc circuit were negatively correlated with craving score changes. Similarly, negative correlations were also found between changes of RSFC in the bilateral DLPFC-caudate circuits and TMT-A scores. We provided scientific evidence for brain recovery of the dorsal and ventral frontostriatal circuits in HU after prolonged abstinence, and these circuits may be potential neuroimaging biomarkers for cognition and craving changes.
