Abstract
AIM To investigate macular microperimetry in patients with early primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) using a new custom-made pattern, and analyze the characteristics of macular sensitivity. METHODS This case-control study included 38 patients with POAG, who were divided into pre-perimetric glaucoma (18 eyes of 18 patients), early-stage (20 eyes of 20 patients), and control (20 eyes of 20 patients) groups. All subjects underwent standard 24-2 humphrey visual field test. An MP-3 microperimeter with a new custom-made pattern (28 testing points distributed in four quadrants, covering the central 10° of the retina) was used to evaluate macular sensitivity. Ganglion cell complex (GCC) thicknesses were examined using an RS-3000 Advance OCT system. The features of structure and function were analysed per quadrant. RESULTS The pre-perimetric glaucoma group had significantly lower inferior hemifield macular sensitivity compared to controls (P<0.05). The early-stage POAG group had significantly lower average, inferior hemifield, inferonasal, and inferotemporal mean sensitivities compared to the pre-perimetric glaucoma group (P<0.05), and lower macular sensitivity in all sectors compared to controls (P<0.05). Regarding GCC thickness, all sectors in the early-stage POAG group became thinner compared to those in controls (P<0.05); whereas all sectors in the early-stage POAG group, except the superonasal quadrant, became thinner compared to those in the pre-perimetric glaucoma group (P<0.05). Macular sensitivity and GCC thickness were significantly associated in each sector. The inferotemporal quadrant had the highest correlation coefficients (0.840). The structure-function relationship for the inferonasal and inferotemporal sectors was stronger compared to the corresponding superior sectors. CONCLUSION Microperimetry reveals variations in macular sensitivity in patients with early glaucoma earlier than conventional perimetry, particularly in pre-perimetric glaucoma cases in which it might be undetectable by conventional methods. The new custom-made pattern may improve the accuracy of microperimetry by enhancing point arrangement and reducing fatigue effects. Macular sensitivity measured by MP-3 with this pattern shows statistically significant structural and functional associations with the thicknesses of the GCC.

Abstract
This research investigates the distribution, progressive changes, and contributing factors of macular choroidal and retinal thickness in Tibetan children utilizing swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT). The Lhasa childhood study recruited 1632 students from seven primary schools in Lhasa. These participants underwent OCT and ophthalmological evaluations, encompassing retinal and choroidal thickness measurements, refractive error, axial length (AL), and systemic examinations. The median age of the scholars was 8.57 ± 0.50 years with a median spherical equivalent (SE) of 0.19 ± 1.28D. Multivariate regression analysis revealed that thinner macular choroid thickness was correlated with lower value of SE, worse best-corrected visual acuity, higher mean arterial blood pressure (MABP) and boys, while retinal thickness was associated with better image quality and lower value of SE. The choroid and retina were significantly thinner in myopic children. SE was positively related to the thickness of all choroidal and full retinal subregions. In comparison to baseline data from 20 months prior, most regions of the full retina had significantly thinned. Choroidal thickness of Tibetan children is thinner than that of same-age children from other regions. Thinning of retina, the outer-sector GCC and GCIPL may be specified as a follow-up and prognostic indicator for myopia.

Nadeem S. Normative retinal nerve fiber layer thickness in a healthy pediatric South Asian cohort: a spectral-domain optical coherence tomography study. Lasers Med Sci 2024; 39:30. [PMID: 38224399 DOI: 10.1007/s10103-024-03971-x] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 02/06/2023] [Accepted: 12/31/2023] [Indexed: 01/16/2024]
Abstract
Currently, the normative values for retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness in our population have not been widely studied. Our study aimed to assess the peripapillary RNFL thickness (RNFLT) with Optopol Copernicus REVO80® spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) amongst healthy children and its associations. One hundred eighty-two eyes of 91 consecutive healthy children 3 to 16 years of age with a refractive error ≤ ± 5 D were included after a thorough eye exam including visual acuity, refraction, tonometry, pachymetry, axial length estimation, and slit lamp exam including fundus assessment. RNFLT was measured via Optopol Copernicus REVO80® high resolution SD-OCT by a single experienced observer with 3D disc mode within a circular area of diameter 3.45 mm and the ring further divided into four quadrants: inferior, superior, nasal, and temporal. The mean age was 11.12 ± 3.12 years (range, 3-16). The average RNFLT was 120.13 ± 12.6 μm. The mean superior RNFL was the thickest at 138.21 ± 16.6 μm, next was the mean inferior RNFLT at 137.62 ± 17.2 μm, followed by the nasal 91.61 ± 18.5 μm and then the temporal at 74.58 ± 11.7 μm. No significant differences in RNFLT were noted between the two eyes. The mean RNFLT was significantly higher in males as compared to females, in vertical quadrants and at an average (p < 0.05). No significant relationship was found between the average RNFLT and factors such as age, axial length, corneal thickness, cup-to-disc ratio, intraocular pressure, or refractive error. This study establishes normative values of RNFLT for this subgroup of Pakistani children for the Optopol Copernicus REVO80® SD-OCT device.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is a new and reliable machine used to evaluate retinal structure and macular perfusion in children. The use of OCTA under bad condition such as high altitude, low atmospheric oxygen, and low humidity, in children is rarely. AIM To quantify the macular micro-vasculature in healthy children of various ages using OCTA in Qamdo. METHODS Design: Prospective cross-sectional, school-based study. Three hundred and forty-seven normal students from 9 schools in 4 different areas in Qamdo were included. OCTA was performed on a 3 mm × 3 mm area centered on the macular region and macular cube 512 × 128 showed details in macular. Early treatment of diabetic retinopathy study Vessel Flow Density (VD) of the macular central vascular plexus density (CVD), inner vascular plexus density (IVD), full vascular plexus density (FVD), and the size of the foveal avascular zone (FAZ) were measured. All these results corrected by t/s = 3.382 × 0.01306 × (axial length-1.82). The differences were compared among various ages, sexes and living environments. RESULTS The mean FAZ area in all eyes was 0.27 mm2 ± 0.12 mm2. The mean foveal thickness (MFT) in the macular cube was 227.64 μm ± 23.51 μm. Compared with girls, boys had a lager FAZ (P = 0.0029). Among the different age groups, MFT (P < 0.001) and FVD (P < 0.0001), IVD (P < 0.0001), and CVD (P = 0.0050) increased with age. FAZ areas were not correlated with age (P = 0.8853) or others (MFT, area). CONCLUSION OCTA can use to evaluate macular perfusion in children. Our data bridge the gap between structural OCT and perfusion density in children in high altitude. Even though these were not a longitudinal study, it may provide us with hints about retina development during puberty and clinical implications of OCTA in children.

Normative data for macular and retinal nerve fibre layer thickness in healthy German children and adolescents using optical coherence tomography. Ophthalmic Physiol Opt 2023. [PMID: 36930522 DOI: 10.1111/opo.13123] [Citation(s) in RCA: 2] [Impact Index Per Article: 2.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 10/10/2022] [Revised: 02/25/2023] [Accepted: 02/28/2023] [Indexed: 03/18/2023]
Abstract
PURPOSE To establish normative data for macular thickness, macular volume and peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thickness using Spectralis® spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) in healthy German children and adolescents and investigate influencing factors. METHODS The cross-sectional study included the right eye of 695 children with at least one complete retinal OCT scan. As part of the LIFE Child study, the children underwent an ophthalmological examination including axial length (AL), spherical equivalent (SE) and OCT measurements. Various questionnaires were answered by the children or their parents to identify media use or outdoor time. Multiple linear regression models were used to investigate the potential influencing factors. RESULTS A total of 342 boys and 353 girls with an average age (SD) of 12.91 (3.29) years participated. The mean AL (SD) was 23.20 (0.86) mm. The mean macular thickness (SD) was 320.53 (12.29) μm and the mean RNFL thickness (SD) was 102.88 (8.79) μm. Statistical analysis revealed a significant correlation between average macular thickness and age (p < 0.001, β = 0.77) as well as AL (p < 0.001, β = -4.06). In addition, boys had thicker maculae (p < 0.001, β = 5.36). The RNFL thickness showed no significant correlation with children's age (p > 0.05), but with AL (p = 0.002, β = -2.15), birth weight (p = 0.02, β = 0.003) and a gender-specific effect of the body mass index standard deviation score for male participants (p = 0.02, β = 1.93). CONCLUSION This study provides normative data and correlations between macular and RNFL thickness in healthy German children. Especially age, gender and AL must be taken into account when evaluating quantitative OCT measurements to classify them as normal.
