Light-Emitting Plasmonic Tunneling Junctions: Current Status and Perspectives

Quantum tunneling, in which electrons can tunnel through a finite potential barrier while simultaneously interacting with other matter excitation, is one of the most fascinating phenomena without classical correspondence. In an extremely thin metallic nanogap, the deep-subwavelength-confined plasmon modes can be directly excited by the inelastically tunneling electrons driven by an externally applied voltage. Light emission via inelastic tunneling possesses a great potential application for next-generation light sources, with great superiority of ultracompact integration, large bandwidth, and ultrafast response. In this Perspective, we first briefly introduce the mechanism of plasmon generation in the inelastic electron tunneling process. Then the state of the art in plasmonic tunneling junctions will be reviewed, particularly emphasizing efficiency improvement, precise construction, active control, and electrically driven optical antenna integration. Ultimately, we forecast some promising and critical prospects that require further investigation.

Reliability analysis of body sensor networks with correlated isolation groups

Body sensor networks (BSNs) are playing a crucial role in tackling arising challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. This work contributes by modeling and analyzing the BSN reliability considering the effects of correlated functional dependence (FDEP) and random isolation time behavior. Particularly, the FDEP exists in BSNs where a relay is utilized to assist the communication between some biosensors and the sink device. When the relay malfunctions, the dependent biosensors may communicate directly with the sink for a limited, uncertain time. These biosensors then become isolated from the rest of the BSN when their remaining power depletes to the level insufficient to support the direct communication. Moreover, multiple biosensors sharing the same relay and a biosensor communicating with the sink via several alternative relays create correlations among different FDEP groups. In addition, the competition in the time domain exists between the local failure of the relay and the propagated failures of dependent biosensors. Both the correlation and competition complicate the reliability modeling and analysis of BSNs. This work proposes a combinatorial and analytical methodology to address both effects in the BSN reliability analysis. The proposed method is demonstrated using a detailed case study and verified using a continuous-time Markov chain method.

Optical rectification and thermal currents in optical tunneling gap antennas

Electrically-contacted optical gap antennas are nanoscale interface devices enabling the transduction between photons and electrons. This new generation of device, usually constituted of metal elements (e.g. gold), captures visible to near infrared electromagnetic radiation and rectifies the incident energy in a direct-current (DC) electrical signal. However, light absorption by the metal may lead to additional thermal effects which need to be taken into account to understand the complete photo-response of the devices. The purpose of this communication is to discriminate the contribution of laser-induced thermo-electric effects in the photo-assisted electronic transport. We show case our analysis with the help of electromigrated devices.

Wide-angle, wide-band, polarization-insensitive metamaterial absorber for thermal energy harvesting

We propose a wide-band metamaterial perfect absorber (MPA), using the coupling in the near-field of a quadruple split-ring resonator concentric with crossed ellipses. We designed the MPA with a metal–insulator-metal (MIM) structure for use in thermal energy harvesting. A gradient-based optimization approach was carried out to maximize the absorption of infrared (IR) radiation around 10 μm. Owing to the near-field coupling of resonators with optimal design parameters, the peaks of the absorption responses approach each other, thus broadening the overall bandwidth with almost unity absorptivity. The proposed design has a resonance at 10 μm resulting from magnetic polaritons (MPs) and thus maintains high absorption above 99% up to a range of incident-angles greater than 60° and exhibits a polarization-free behavior due to symmetry. When the optimal design was numerically examined to fabrication tolerances, it showed negligible sensitivities in the absorptivity with respect to design parameters. The strong electric field enhancement inside the split-ring gaps and between the ends of the cross arms and the surrounding ring enables designing MIM diodes to rectify the harvested thermal radiations at 288 K. MIM diodes can be built by the deposition of thin insulators to sit in these gaps. The MIM diode and MPA work together to harvest and rectify the incident IR radiation in a manner similar to the operation of rectennas. The MPA outperforms the traditional nano-antennas in impedance matching efficiency because of its higher resistance. Also, its dual-polarization reception capability doubles the rectenna efficiency. Our proposed MPA retained absorptivity more than 99% when coupled with MIM diodes whose resistances are in the range of 500 Ω–1 MΩ.

Electrically Driven Hot-Carrier Generation and Above-Threshold Light Emission in Plasmonic Tunnel Junctions

Above-threshold light emission from plasmonic tunnel junctions, when emitted photons have energies significantly higher than the energy scale of incident electrons, has attracted much recent interest in nano-optics, while the underlying physics remains elusive. We examine above-threshold light emission in electromigrated tunnel junctions. Our measurements over a large ensemble of devices demonstrate a giant (∼10⁴) material-dependent photon yield (emitted photons per incident electrons). This dramatic effect cannot be explained only by the radiative field enhancement due to localized plasmons in the tunneling gap. Emission is well described by a Boltzmann spectrum with an effective temperature exceeding 2000 K, coupled to a plasmon-modified photonic density of states. The effective temperature is approximately linear in the applied bias, consistent with a suggested theoretical model describing hot-carrier dynamics driven by nonradiative decay of electrically excited localized plasmons. Electrically generated hot carriers and nontraditional light emission could open avenues for active photochemistry, optoelectronics, and quantum optics.

Analytic approach to study a hybrid plasmonic waveguide-fed and numerically design a nano-antenna based on the new director

In this paper, a wideband InP-based hybrid plasmonic nano-antenna (HPNA) operating at telecommunication wavelengths has been proposed. Monolithically integrating InP-based lasers with hybrid plasmonic waveguide (HPW) as a feed line of the proposed HPNA on the same InGaAsP/InP wafer can increase the antenna efficiency. A new vertical director has been employed to have a highly directive horizontal radiation pattern. This enhancement is attributed to the efficient coupling between the radiation patterns of arm elements as well as reduced side lobes and back-lobes levels due to the achieved impedance matching. As a result, the directivity has been increased considerably, 3.6 dBi at 193.5 THz (1550 nm) and 1.1 dBi at 229 THz (1310 nm). The HPNA shows the high directivity, total efficiency and quality factor of 11.8, 97.49% and 94.57, respectively. Further, to verify the validity of confining the fundamental TM mode to a thin layer with the lower refractive index, both theoretical and numerical methods have been employed. Therefore, we have derived an analytical formula to investigate the HPW dispersion relation based on the transfer matrix theory and genetic algorithm. Moreover, due to the HPNA ability to receive an optical signal from free space and transmit it to the waveguide based on the reciprocity theorem, the HPNA performance as an optical wireless on-chip nano-link has been investigated analytically and numerically. Additionally, to obtain a high optical power signal and steering the beam angle, the antenna gain and directivity have been calculated with two different types of array structure by controlling the relative phase shift between the array elements and elements number. To validate the array design performance, a three dimensional full-wave numerical simulation and array factor theory have been exploited. The HPNA fabrication is compatible with generic foundry technology.

Optical antennas driven by quantum tunneling: a key issues review

Analogous to radio- and microwave antennas, optical nanoantennas are devices that receive and emit radiation at optical frequencies. Until recently, the realization of electrically driven optical antennas was an outstanding challenge in nanophotonics. In this review we discuss and analyze recent reports in which quantum tunneling-specifically inelastic electron tunneling-is harnessed as a means to convert electrical energy into photons, mediated by optical antennas. To aid this analysis we introduce the fundamentals of optical antennas and inelastic electron tunneling. Our discussion is focused on recent progress in the field and on future directions and opportunities.

Surface plasmons manipulated Smith-Purcell radiation on Yagi-Uda nanoantenna arrays

An electron bunch (e-bunch) passing through an insulator-metal-insulator (IMI) substrate can excite surface plasmons (SPs) on the substrate. Recent studies demonstrate that Smith-Purcell radiation (SPR) from one-dimensional gratings on an IMI substrate can be manipulated and enhanced by e-bunch excited SPs. However, under this configuration, only the emission along the direction of electron moving can be controlled. To steer both the azimuthal and polar angles of the far-field emission pattern requires other mechanisms. In this work, the SP-manipulated SPR with a Yagi-Uda nanoantenna (YUNA) array on an IMI substrate for generation of light beams with designed far-field patterns is proposed and explored by computer simulations. Emission of SPR along and perpendicular to the direction of electron movement can be manipulated by designing grating period and YUNA structure, respectively. Dependence of the azimuthal and polar angles of emitted light beam on geometry parameters of feed and directors of YUNA are elucidated. Furthermore, emission of multiple beams containing a single wavelength and multiple wavelengths with required far-field angles can be achieved using different groups of YUNA arrays on different IMI substrates. The proposed mechanism may have applications for light sources, optical imaging, optical beam steering, holography, microdisplay and cryptography.

Wireless optical power transfer system by spatial wavelength division and distributed laser cavity resonance

A novel wireless optical power transfer (WOPT) system using diverging angular dispersion and spatially distributed laser cavity resonance is proposed. In the transmitter, a diffraction grating spatially disperses the broadband light from a semiconductor optical amplifier. Receiving units spread across a wide field of view are embedded with retroreflecting beam splitters that reflect the incident beam back to the transmitter, thereby completing multiple resonant cavities. Retroreflectors enable a user-friendly alignment and tap power from the resonating cavity, supplying optical power. We demonstrate an automatic safety mechanism that instantly ceases the cavity resonance should any vulnerable organ break the transmitter-receiver line of sight. The results indicate that a single-channel WOPT system can provide a resonating average power of 17.2 mW (receiving power of 1.7 mW to the photodetector) over a distance of 1 m with a channel linewidth of 0.035 nm. For a proof-of-principle experiment, seven receiver units were successfully demonstrated to supply optical power. With careful retroreflector design and field-of-view optimization, the potential of our scheme can be further exploited toward commercial deployment.

Electromigrated electrical optical antennas for transducing electrons and photons at the nanoscale

Background: Electrically controlled optical metal antennas are an emerging class of nanodevices enabling a bilateral transduction between electrons and photons. At the heart of the device is a tunnel junction that may either emit light upon injection of electrons or generate an electrical current when excited by a light wave. The current study explores a technological route for producing these functional units based upon the electromigration of metal constrictions. Results: We combine multiple nanofabrication steps to realize in-plane tunneling junctions made of two gold electrodes, separated by a sub-nanometer gap acting as the feedgap of an optical antenna. We electrically characterize the transport properties of the junctions in the light of the Fowler-Nordheim representation and the Simmons model for electron tunneling. We demonstrate light emission from the feedgap upon electron injection and show examples of how this nanoscale light source can be coupled to waveguiding structures. Conclusion: Electromigrated in-plane tunneling optical antennas feature interesting properties with their unique functionality enabling interfacing electrons and photons at the atomic scale and with the same device. This technology may open new routes for device-to-device communication and for interconnecting an electronic control layer to a photonic architecture.
