Atomic-Scale Behavior of Perovskite-Supported Ir-Pd-Ru Nanoparticles under Redox Atmospheres

An advanced materials solution utilizing the concept of "smart catalysts" could be a game changer for today's automotive emission control technology, enabling the efficient use of precious metals via their two-way switching between metallic nanoparticle forms and ionic states in the host perovskite lattice as a result of the cyclical oxidizing/reducing atmospheres. However, direct evidence for such processes remains scarce; therefore, the underlying mechanism has been an unsettled debate. Here, we use advanced scanning transmission electron microscopy to reveal the atomic-scale behaviors for a LaFe0.95Pd0.05O3-supported Ir-Pd-Ru nanocatalyst under fluctuating redox conditions, thereby proving the reversible dissolution/exsolution for Ir and Ru but with a limited occurrence for Pd. Despite such selective dissolution during oxidation, all three elements remain cooperatively alloyed in the subsequent reduction, which is a key factor in preserving the catalytic activity of the ternary nanoalloy while displaying its self-regenerating functionality and control of particle agglomeration.

Concurrent Amorphization and Nanocatalyst Formation in Cu-Substituted Perovskite Oxide Surface: Effects on Oxygen Reduction Reaction at Elevated Temperatures

The activity and durability of chemical/electrochemical catalysts are significantly influenced by their surface environments, highlighting the importance of thoroughly examining the catalyst surface. Here, Cu-substituted La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3-δ is selected, a state-of-the-art material for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), to explore the real-time evolution of surface morphology and chemistry under a reducing atmosphere at elevated temperatures. Remarkably, in a pioneering observation, it is discovered that the perovskite surface starts to amorphize at an unusually low temperature of approximately 100 °C and multicomponent metal nanocatalysts additionally form on the amorphous surface as the temperature raises to 400 °C. Moreover, this investigation into the stability of the resulting amorphous layer under oxidizing conditions reveals that the amorphous structure can withstand a high-temperature oxidizing atmosphere (≥650 °C) only when it has undergone sufficient reduction for an extended period. Therefore, the coexistence of the active nanocatalysts and defective amorphous surface leads to a nearly 100% enhancement in the electrode resistance for the ORR over 200 h without significant degradation. These observations provide a new catalytic design strategy for using redox-dynamic perovskite oxide host materials.

Synergistic Bulk and Surface Engineering for Expeditious and Durable Reversible Protonic Ceramic Electrochemical Cells Air Electrode

Reversible protonic ceramic electrochemical cells (R-PCECs) offer the potential for high-efficiency power generation and green hydrogen production at intermediate temperatures. However, the commercial viability of R-PCECs is hampered by the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) within conventional air electrodes operating at reduced temperatures. To address this challenge, this work introduces a novel approach based on the simultaneous optimization of bulk-phase metal-oxygen bonds and in-situ formation of a metal oxide nano-catalyst surface modification. This strategy is designed to expedite the ORR/OER electrocatalytic activity of air electrodes exhibiting triple (O2-, H+, e-) conductivity. Specifically, this engineered air electrode nanocomposite-Ba(Co0.4Fe0.4Zr0.1Y0.1)0.95Ni0.05F0.1O2.9-δ demonstrates remarkable ORR/OER catalytic activity and exceptional durability in R-PCECs. This is evidenced by significantly improved peak power density from 626 to 996 mW cm-2 and highly stable reversibility over a 100-h cycling period. This research offers a rational design strategy to achieve high-performance R-PCEC air electrodes with superior operational activity and stability for efficient and sustainable energy conversion and storage.

In Situ Self-Assembled Active and Stable Ir@MnOx/La0.7Sr0.3Cr0.9Ir0.1O3-δ Interfaces for CO2 Electrolysis

Solid oxide electrolysis cells are prospective approaches for CO2 utilization but face significant challenges due to the sluggish reaction kinetics and poor stability of the fuel electrodes. Herein, we strategically addressed the long-standing trade-off phenomenon between enhanced exsolution and improved structural stability via topotactic ion exchange. The surface dynamic reconstruction of the MnOx/La0.7Sr0.3Cr0.9Ir0.1O3-δ (LSCIr) catalyst was visualized at the atomic scale. Compared with the Ir@LSCIr interface, the in situ self-assembled Ir@MnOx/LSCIr interface exhibited greater CO2 activation and easily removable carbonate intermediates, thus reached a 42 % improvement in CO2 electrolysis performance at 1.6 V. Furthermore, an improved CO2 electrolysis stability was achieved due to the uniformly wrapped MnOx shell of the Ir@MnOx/LSCIr cathode. Our approach enables a detailed understanding of the dynamic microstructure evolution at active interfaces and provides a roadmap for the rational design and evaluation of efficient metal/oxide catalysts for CO2 electrolysis.

Anchored Cobalt Nanoparticles on Layered Perovskites for Rapid Peroxymonosulfate Activation in Antibiotic Degradation

In the Fenton-like reaction, revealing the dynamic evolution of the active sites is crucial to achieve the activity improvement and stability of the catalyst. This study reports a perovskite oxide in which atomic (Co0) in situ embedded exsolution occurs during the high-temperature phase transition. This unique anchoring strategy significantly improves the Co3+/Co2+ cycling efficiency at the interface and inhibits metal leaching during peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. The Co@L-PBMC catalyst exhibits superior PMS activation ability and could achieve 99% degradation of tetracycline within 5 min. The combination of experimental characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations elucidates that the electron-deficient oxygen vacancy accepts an electron from the Co 3d-orbital, resulting in a significant electron delocalization of the Co site, thereby facilitating the adsorption of the *HSO5/*OH intermediate onto the "metal-VO bridge" structure. This work provides insights into the PMS activation mechanism at the atomic level, which will guide the rational design of next-generation catalysts for environmental remediation.

Synergistic growth of nickel and platinum nanoparticles via exsolution and surface reaction

Bimetallic catalysts combining precious and earth-abundant metals in well designed nanoparticle architectures can enable cost efficient and stable heterogeneous catalysis. Here, we present an interaction-driven in-situ approach to engineer finely dispersed Ni decorated Pt nanoparticles (1-6 nm) on perovskite nanofibres via reduction at high temperatures (600-800 oC). Deposition of Pt (0.5 wt%) enhances the reducibility of the perovskite support and promotes the nucleation of Ni cations via metal-support interaction, thereafter the Ni species react with Pt forming alloy nanoparticles, with the combined processes yielding smaller nanoparticles that either of the contributing processes. Tuneable uniform Pt-Ni nanoparticles are produced on the perovskite surface, yielding reactivity and stability surpassing 1 wt.% Pt/γ-Al2O3 catalysts for CO oxidation. This approach heralds the possibility of in-situ fabrication of supported bimetallic nanoparticles with engineered compositional distributions and performance.

Nanoparticle Exsolution on Perovskite Oxides: Insights into Mechanism, Characteristics and Novel Strategies

Supported nanoparticles have attracted considerable attention as a promising catalyst for achieving unique properties in numerous applications, including fuel cells, chemical conversion, and batteries. Nanocatalysts demonstrate high activity by expanding the number of active sites, but they also intensify deactivation issues, such as agglomeration and poisoning, simultaneously. Exsolution for bottom-up synthesis of supported nanoparticles has emerged as a breakthrough technique to overcome limitations associated with conventional nanomaterials. Nanoparticles are uniformly exsolved from perovskite oxide supports and socketed into the oxide support by a one-step reduction process. Their uniformity and stability, resulting from the socketed structure, play a crucial role in the development of novel nanocatalysts. Recently, tremendous research efforts have been dedicated to further controlling exsolution particles. To effectively address exsolution at a more precise level, understanding the underlying mechanism is essential. This review presents a comprehensive overview of the exsolution mechanism, with a focus on its driving force, processes, properties, and synergetic strategies, as well as new pathways for optimizing nanocatalysts in diverse applications.

Precise solid-phase synthesis of CoFe@FeOx nanoparticles for efficient polysulfide regulation in lithium/sodium-sulfur batteries

Complex metal nanoparticles distributed uniformly on supports demonstrate distinctive physicochemical properties and thus attract a wide attention for applications. The commonly used wet chemistry methods display limitations to achieve the nanoparticle structure design and uniform dispersion simultaneously. Solid-phase synthesis serves as an interesting strategy which can achieve the fabrication of complex metal nanoparticles on supports. Herein, the solid-phase synthesis strategy is developed to precisely synthesize uniformly distributed CoFe@FeOx core@shell nanoparticles. Fe atoms are preferentially exsolved from CoFe alloy bulk to the surface and then be carburized into a FexC shell under thermal syngas atmosphere, subsequently the formed FexC shell is passivated by air, obtaining CoFe@FeOx with a CoFe alloy core and a FeOx shell. This strategy is universal for the synthesis of MFe@FeOx (M = Co, Ni, Mn). The CoFe@FeOx exhibits bifunctional effect on regulating polysulfides as the separator coating layer for Li-S and Na-S batteries. This method could be developed into solid-phase synthetic systems to construct well distributed complex metal nanoparticles.

Direct methane protonic ceramic fuel cells with self-assembled Ni-Rh bimetallic catalyst

Direct methane protonic ceramic fuel cells are promising electrochemical devices that address the technical and economic challenges of conventional ceramic fuel cells. However, Ni, a catalyst of protonic ceramic fuel cells exhibits sluggish reaction kinetics for CH4 conversion and a low tolerance against carbon-coking, limiting its wider applications. Herein, we introduce a self-assembled Ni-Rh bimetallic catalyst that exhibits a significantly high CH4 conversion and carbon-coking tolerance. It enables direct methane protonic ceramic fuel cells to operate with a high maximum power density of ~0.50 W·cm-2 at 500 °C, surpassing all other previously reported values from direct methane protonic ceramic fuel cells and even solid oxide fuel cells. Moreover, it allows stable operation with a degradation rate of 0.02%·h-1 at 500 °C over 500 h, which is ~20-fold lower than that of conventional protonic ceramic fuel cells (0.4%·h-1). High-resolution in-situ surface characterization techniques reveal that high-water interaction on the Ni-Rh surface facilitates the carbon cleaning process, enabling sustainable long-term operation.

Improvement of oxygen reduction activity and stability on a perovskite oxide surface by electrochemical potential

The instability of the surface chemistry in transition metal oxide perovskites is the main factor hindering the long-term durability of oxygen electrodes in solid oxide electrochemical cells. The instability of surface chemistry is mainly due to the segregation of A-site dopants from the lattice to the surface. Here we report that cathodic potential can remarkably improve the stability in oxygen reduction reaction and electrochemical activity, by decomposing the near-surface region of the perovskite phase in a porous electrode made of La1-xSrxCo1-xFexO3 mixed with Sm0.2Ce0.8O1.9. Our approach combines X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and secondary ion mass spectrometry for surface and sub-surface analysis. Formation of Ruddlesden-Popper phase is accompanied by suppression of the A-site dopant segregation, and exsolution of catalytically active Co particles onto the surface. These findings reveal the chemical and structural elements that maintain an active surface for oxygen reduction, and the cathodic potential is one way to generate these desirable chemistries.

Exsolution of Co-Fe Alloy Nanoparticles on the PrBaFeCoO5+δ Layered Perovskite Monitored by Neutron Powder Diffraction and Catalytic Effect on Dry Reforming of Methane

Reversible exsolution and dissolution of metal nanoparticles (NPs) in complex oxides have been investigated as an efficient strategy to improve the performance and durability of the catalysts for thermal and electrochemical energy conversion. Here, in situ exsolution of Co-Fe alloy NPs from the layered perovskite PrBaFeCoO_5+δ (PBFC) and their dissolution back into the oxide host have been monitored for the first time by in situ neutron powder diffraction and confirmed by X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. Catalytic tests for dry reforming of methane showed stable operation over ∼100 h at 800 °C with negligible carbon deposition (<0.3 mg/g_cat h). The CO₂ and CH₄ conversions are among the highest achieved by layered double perovskites. The cyclability of the PBFC catalyst and the potential to improve the catalytic activity by adjusting the composition, size, and the NP distribution would pave the way for highly efficient energy conversion applications.

Exsolved catalyst particles as a plaything of atmosphere and electrochemistry

A new type of catalyst preparation yields its active sites not by infiltration but exsolution of reducible transition metals of its own host lattice. These exsolution catalysts offer a high dispersion of catalytically active particles, slow agglomeration, and the possibility of reactivation after poisoning due to redox cycling. The formation of exsolved particles by partial decomposition of the host lattice can be driven by applying a sufficiently reducing atmosphere, elevated temperatures but also by a cathodic bias voltage (provided the host perovskite is an electrode on an oxide ion conducting electrolyte). In addition, such an electrochemical polarisation can change the oxidation state and thus the catalytic activity of exsolved particles. In this work, we investigate the electrochemical switching between an active and an inactive state of iron particles exsolved from thin film mixed conducting model electrodes, namely La_0.6Sr_0.4FeO_3-δ (LSF) and Nd_0.6Ca_0.4FeO_3-δ (NCF), in humid hydrogen atmospheres. We show that the transition between two activity states exhibits a hysteresis-like behaviour in the electrochemical I-V characteristics. Ambient pressure XPS measurements proofed that this hysteresis is linked to the oxidation and reduction of iron particles. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the surface kinetics of the host material itself has only a negligible impact on the particle exsolution, and that the main impact factors are the surrounding atmosphere as well as the applied electrochemical overpotential. In particular, we suggest a 'kinetic competition' between gas atmosphere and oxygen chemical potential in the mixed conducting electrode and discuss possible ways of how this process takes place.

Boosting the stability of perovskites with exsolved nanoparticles by B-site supplement mechanism

Perovskites with exsolved nanoparticles (P-eNs) have immense potentials for carbon dioxide (CO₂) reduction in solid oxide electrolysis cell. Despite the recent achievements in promoting the B-site cation exsolution for enhanced catalytic activities, the unsatisfactory stability of P-eNs at high voltages greatly impedes their practical applications and this issue has not been elucidated. In this study, we reveal that the formation of B-site vacancies in perovskite scaffold is the major contributor to the degradation of P-eNs; we then address this issue by fine-regulating the B-site supplement of the reduced Sr₂Fe_1.3Ni_0.2Mo_0.5O_6-δ using foreign Fe sources, achieving a robust perovskite scaffold and prolonged stability performance. Furthermore, the degradation mechanism from the perspective of structure stability of perovskite has also been proposed to understand the origins of performance deterioration. The B-site supplement endows P-eNs with the capability to become appealing electrocatalysts for CO₂ reduction and more broadly, for other energy storage and conversion systems.

Solid-State Reaction Synthesis of Nanoscale Materials: Strategies and Applications

Nanomaterials (NMs) with unique structures and compositions can give rise to exotic physicochemical properties and applications. Despite the advancement in solution-based methods, scalable access to a wide range of crystal phases and intricate compositions is still challenging. Solid-state reaction (SSR) syntheses have high potential owing to their flexibility toward multielemental phases under feasibly high temperatures and solvent-free conditions as well as their scalability and simplicity. Controlling the nanoscale features through SSRs demands a strategic nanospace-confinement approach due to the risk of heat-induced reshaping and sintering. Here, we describe advanced SSR strategies for NM synthesis, focusing on mechanistic insights, novel nanoscale phenomena, and underlying principles using a series of examples under different categories. After introducing the history of classical SSRs, key theories, and definitions central to the topic, we categorize various modern SSR strategies based on the surrounding solid-state media used for nanostructure growth, conversion, and migration under nanospace or dimensional confinement. This comprehensive review will advance the quest for new materials design, synthesis, and applications.

Surface restructuring of a perovskite-type air electrode for reversible protonic ceramic electrochemical cells

Reversible protonic ceramic electrochemical cells (R-PCECs) are ideally suited for efficient energy storage and conversion; however, one of the limiting factors to high performance is the poor stability and insufficient electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction and evolution of the air electrode exposed to the high concentration of steam. Here we report our findings in enhancing the electrochemical activity and durability of a perovskite-type air electrode, Ba_0.9Co_0.7Fe_0.2Nb_0.1O_3-δ (BCFN), via a water-promoted surface restructuring process. Under properly-controlled operating conditions, the BCFN electrode is naturally restructured to an Nb-rich BCFN electrode covered with Nb-deficient BCFN nanoparticles. When used as the air electrode for a fuel-electrode-supported R-PCEC, good performances are demonstrated at 650 °C, achieving a peak power density of 1.70 W cm⁻² in the fuel cell mode and a current density of 2.8 A cm⁻² at 1.3 V in the electrolysis mode while maintaining reasonable Faradaic efficiencies and promising durability.

One limiting factor to the high-performing reversible protonic ceramic electrochemical cells is the poor stability and electrocatalytic activity of air electrodes. Here the authors report a water-promoted surface restructuring process to enhance the performance of Ba_0.9Co_0.7Fe_0.2Nb_0.1O_3-δ air electrode.

Realizing Simultaneous Detrimental Reactions Suppression and Multiple Benefits Generation from Nickel Doping toward Improved Protonic Ceramic Fuel Cell Performance

Anode-supported protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) are highly promising and efficient energy conversion systems. However, several challenges need to be overcome before these systems are used more widely, including the poor sintering of recently developed proton-conducting oxides and the decreased proton conductivity due to detrimental reactions between the nickel from anode and the electrolyte occurring during high-temperature co-sintering. Herein, a Ni doping strategy to increase the electrolyte sintering, suppress the detrimental phase reactions, and generate stable Ni nanoparticles for enhanced performance is proposed. A nickel-doped perovskite oxide is developed with the nominal composition of Ba(Zr_0.1 Ce_0.7 Y_0.1 Yb_0.1 )_0.95 Ni_0.05 O_{3- δ} . Acting as a sintering aid, such a small amount of nickel effectively improves the sintering of the electrolyte. Concomitantly, reactions between nickel and the Ni-doped ceramic phase are suppressed, turning detrimental phase reactions into benefits. The nickel doping further promotes the formation of Ni nanoparticles, which enhance the electrocatalytic activity of the anode toward the hydrogen oxidation reaction and improve the charge transfer across the anode-electrolyte interface. As a result, highly efficient PCFCs are developed. The innovative anode developed in this work also shows favorable activity toward ammonia decomposition, making it highly promising for use in direct ammonia fuel cells.

A Flexible Method to Fabricate Exsolution-Based Nanoparticle-Decorated Materials in Seconds

Decorating metallic nanoparticles on the surface of oxide support is a promising approach to tailor the catalytic activity of perovskite. Here, for the first time using thermal shock to rapidly fabricate nanoparticle-decorated materials (NDMs) is proposed. Low-cost and size-tailorable carbon paper is used as the heating source during the thermal shock. It is reported that by thermal shock technique, only ≈13 s including heating and treating time is needed to fabricate the exsolution-based NDMs (the fastest method to date). Benefitted by the sufficiently provided driving force and the short treating time, as compared to the product prepared by the conventionally furnace-based method, higher particle density and smaller particle size of the exsolved catalysts are acquired for the thermal shock fabricated NDM, giving rise to a fascinating improvement (12-fold) of the electrochemical performance. This work develops a new technique to rapidly fabricate NDMs in an economic and high-throughput manner, profoundly improving the flexibility of the application of exsolution-based materials in electrochemical devices.

Precursor Heterogeneity Driven Mo-Te Nanoparticle Structural Diversification for Cancer Photo-Theranostics

Chemical reactions between homogeneous precursors are typically used to synthesize monodisperse nanoparticles with well-controlled size and morphology. It is difficult to predict the evolved nanostructures when using two heterogeneous precursors. In this study, three types of Mo-Te nanoparticles shaped like leaves, spindles, and rice grains (denoted respectively as nanoleaf, nanospindle, and nanorice) were obtained from dextrose-mediated proton-coupled electron transfer reaction between the solid polyoxomolybdate (POM) and the ionic tellurite anion as precursors. All produced nanoparticles had excellent optical absorption in the ultraviolet(UV)-visible(Vis)-near-infrared(NIR) regions, with only slight deviations among them. After confirming nanoparticles' photothermal conversion and photocatalytic activity at multiple wavelengths, the Mo-Te nanorice was tested as a potential agent for cancer treatment due to its minimum toxicity, excellent colloidal stability, and intrinsic anticancer effect. Excellent treatment efficacy and clearance were confirmed in vitro and in vivo. Due to their photoacoustic imaging capability, the injection of pristine nanoparticles could also realize phototheranostics without using additional drugs, probes, or photosensitizers.

A New Durable Surface Nanoparticles-Modified Perovskite Cathode for Protonic Ceramic Fuel Cells from Selective Cation Exsolution under Oxidizing Atmosphere

A high-performance cathode of a protonic ceramic fuel cell (PCFC) should possess excellent oxygen reduction reactivity, high proton/oxygen-ion/electron conductivity, and sufficient operational stability, thus requiring a delicate tuning of both the bulk and surface properties of the electrode material. Although surface modification of perovskites with nanoparticles from reducing-atmosphere exsolution has been demonstrated effective at improving the electrochemical anodic oxidation, such nanoparticles would easily re-incorporate into the perovskite lattice causing a big challenge for their application as a cathode. Here, a durable perovskite-based nanocomposite cathode for PCFCs is reported, which is facilely prepared via the exsolution of nanoparticles in an oxidizing atmosphere. Through composition and cation nonstoichiometry manipulation, a precursor with the nominal composition of Ba_0.95 (Co_0.4 Fe_0.4 Zr_0.1 Y_0.1 )_0.95 Ni_0.05 O_3-δ (BCFZYN-095) is designed, synthesized, and investigated, which, upon calcination, gives rise to the formation of a perovskite-based nanocomposite comprising a major perovskite phase and a minor NiO phase enriched on the perovskite surface. The major perovskite phase enabled by the proper cation nonstoichiometry manipulation promotes bulk proton conduction while the NiO nanoparticles facilitate the oxygen surface exchange process, leading to a superior cathodic performance with a maximum peak power density of 1040 mW cm^-2 at 650 °C and excellent operational stability of 400 h at 550 °C.

Nanoscale interface engineering for solid oxide fuel cells using atomic layer deposition

Atomic layer deposition (ALD), which is already actively used in the semiconductor industry, has been in the spotlight in various energy fields, such as batteries and fuel cells, given its unique ability to enable the nanoscale deposition of diverse materials with a variety of compositions onto complex 3D structures. In particular, with regard to ceramic fuel cells, ALD has attracted attention because it facilitates the manufacturing of thin and dense electrolytes. Furthermore, recently, electrode surfaces and electrode/electrolyte interface modification are arising as new research strategies to fabricate robust fuel cells. In this mini-review, we present a brief overview of ALD and recent studies that utilize ALD in ceramic fuel cells, such as manufacturing thin film electrolytes, stabilizing electrodes, functionalizing electrodes, and modifying the chemistry of electrode surfaces. We also propose research directions to expand the utility and functionality of the ALD techniques.

Bulk and surface exsolution produces a variety of Fe-rich and Fe-depleted ellipsoidal nanostructures in La0.6Sr0.4FeO3 thin films

The past several years have seen a resurgence in the popularity of metal exsolution as an approach to synthesize advanced materials proposed for novel catalytic, magnetic, optical, and electrochemical properties. Whereas most studies to-date have focused on surface exsolution (motivated by catalysis), we instead report on the diversity of nanostructures formed in La_0.6Sr_0.4FeO₃ thin films during sub-surface or so-called 'bulk' exsolution, in addition to surface exsolution. Bulk exsolution is a promising approach to tuning the functionality of materials, yet there is little understanding of the nanostructures exsolved within the bulk and how they compare to those exsolved at gas-solid interfaces. This work combines atomic- and nano-scale imaging and spectroscopy techniques applied using a state-of-the-art aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM). In doing so, we present a detailed atomic-resolution study of a range of Fe-rich and Fe-depleted nanostructures possible via exsolution, along with qualitative and quantitative chemical analysis of the exsolved nanostructures and oxide phases formed throughout the film. Local structural changes in the perovskite matrix, coinciding with nanostructure exsolution, are also characterized with atomic-resolution STEM imaging. Fe exsolution is shown to create local A-site rich domains of Ruddlesden-Popper phase, and some stages of this phase formation have been demonstrated in this work. In particular, phase boundaries are found to be the primary nucleation sites for bulk and surface exsolution, and the exsolved particles observed here tend to be ellipsoidal with shape factor of 1.4. We report a range of nanostructure types (core-shell, bulk core-shell, adjacent, and independent particles), revealing several possible avenues of future exploration aimed to understand the formation mechanism of each exsolution type and to develop their functionality. This work is thus relevant to materials scientists and engineers motivated to understand and utilize exsolution to synthesize materials with predictable nanostructures.

Anomaly Negative Resistance Phenomena in Highly Epitaxial PrBa0.7Ca0.3Co2O5+δ Thin Films Induced from Superfast Redox Reactions

Thin films of Ca-doped double perovskite, PrBa0.7Ca0.3Co2O5+δ (PBCC), were epitaxially grown on (001) SrTiO3, and their redox reactions under a switching flow of H2 and O2 gases were examined at various temperatures by measuring the resistance R(t) of the films as a function of the gas flow time t. In the temperature range between 350 and 725 °C, these thin films are reduced and oxidized in an ultrafast manner under the flow of H2 and O2 gases, respectively, suggesting that PBCC thin films are promising candidates for developing ultra-sensitive oxygen sensors or SOFC cathodes at intermediate or high temperatures. When the gas flow is switched to O2, the reduced PBCC thin films exhibit a negative resistance at temperatures above 600 °C but a positive resistance at temperatures below 600 °C. The probable cause for these anomalous transport properties is the diffusion of the H atoms from the cathode to the anode in the PBCC film, which provides a current opposite to that resulting from the external voltage.

Unveiling the key factor for the phase reconstruction and exsolved metallic particle distribution in perovskites

To significantly increase the amount of exsolved particles, the complete phase reconstruction from simple perovskite to Ruddlesden-Popper (R-P) perovskite is greatly desirable. However, a comprehensive understanding of key parameters affecting the phase reconstruction to R-P perovskite is still unexplored. Herein, we propose the Gibbs free energy for oxygen vacancy formation in Pr_0.5(Ba/Sr)_0.5TO_3-δ (T = Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni) as the important factor in determining the type of phase reconstruction. Furthermore, using in-situ temperature & environment-controlled X-ray diffraction measurements, we report the phase diagram and optimum 'x' range required for the complete phase reconstruction to R-P perovskite in Pr_0.5Ba_0.5-xSr_xFeO_3-δ system. Among the Pr_0.5Ba_0.5-xSr_xFeO_3-δ, (Pr_0.5Ba_0.2Sr_0.3)₂FeO_4+δ - Fe metal demonstrates the smallest size of exsolved Fe metal particles when the phase reconstruction occurs under reducing condition. The exsolved nano-Fe metal particles exhibit high particle density and are well-distributed on the perovskite surface, showing great catalytic activity in fuel cell and syngas production.

Activating Lattice Oxygen in Perovskite Oxide by B-Site Cation Doping for Modulated Stability and Activity at Elevated Temperatures

Doping perovskite oxide with different cations is used to improve its electro-catalytic performance for various energy and environment devices. In this work, an activated lattice oxygen activity in Pr0.4 Sr0.6 Cox Fe0.9- x Nb0.1 O3- δ (PSCxFN, x = 0, 0.2, 0.7) thin film model system by B-site cation doping is reported. As Co doping level increases, PSCxFN thin films exhibit higher concentration of oxygen vacancies ( V o • • ) as revealed by X-ray diffraction and synchrotron-based X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Density functional theory calculation results suggest that Co doping leads to more distortion in FeO octahedra and weaker metaloxygen bonds caused by the increase of antibonding state, thereby lowering V o • • formation energy. As a consequence, PSCxFN thin film with higher Co-doping level presents larger amount of exsolved particles on the surface. Both the facilitated V o • • formation and B-site cation exsolution lead to the enhanced hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) activity. Excessive Co doping until 70%, nevertheless, results in partial decomposition of thin film and degrades the stability. Pr0.4 Sr0.6 (Co0.2 Fe0.7 Nb0.1 )O3 with moderate Co doping level displays both good HOR activity and stability. This work clarifies the critical role of B-site cation doping in determining the V o • • formation process, the surface activity, and structure stability of perovskite oxides.

Direct Observation of Rhodium Ex-Solution from a Ceria Nanodomain and Its Use for Hydrogen Production via Propane Steam Reforming

The ex-solution phenomenon has received attention as a promising technique to prepare highly durable heterogeneous catalysts. Perovskite materials have been mainly used as host oxides for ex-solution, but their small surface areas have limited their practical use. Here, Rh was ex-solved by reducing Rh-doped ceria solid solution, and nanosized Rh catalysts with a high surface area of 70.7 m²/g were prepared. The Rh nanoparticles ex-solved from the ceria nanodomains were directly monitored by in situ transmission electron microscopy. The Rh nanoparticles whose sizes are 2-3 nm were not coarsened during the propane steam reforming process carried out at 700 °C for 65 h, leading to high resistance against sintering and coke formation. On the contrary, the Rh catalyst simply deposited on CeO₂ was significantly sintered after the reaction, and the size of Rh nanoparticles increased to 25 nm, resulting in severe coke formation. Our work shows that ex-solution from a ceria-based nanodomain can be a good way to prepare metal nanoparticle catalysts with a large surface area and excellent durability for gas-phase reactions at high temperatures.

Cation-Exchange-Induced Metal and Alloy Dual-Exsolution in Perovskite Ferrite Oxides Boosting the Performance of Li-O2 Battery

A temperature-controlled cation-exchange approach is introduced to achieve a unique dual-exsolution in perovskite La_0.8 Fe_0.9 Co_0.1 O_3-δ where both CoFe alloy and Co metal are simultaneously exsolved from the parent perovskite, forming an alloy and metal co-decorated perovskite oxide. Mossbauer spectra show that cation exchange of Fe atoms in CoFe alloy and Co cations in the perovskite is the key to the co-existence of Co metal and CoFe alloy. The obtained composite exhibits an enhanced catalytic activity as Li-O₂ battery cathode catalysts with a specific discharge capacity of 6549.7 mAh g^-1 and a cycling performance of 215 cycles without noticeable degradation. Calculations show that the combination of decorated CoFe alloy and Co metal synergistically modulated the discharge reaction pathway that improves the performance of Li-O₂ battery.

Promoting exsolution of RuFe alloy nanoparticles on Sr2Fe1.4Ru0.1Mo0.5O6-δ via repeated redox manipulations for CO2 electrolysis

Metal nanoparticles anchored on perovskite through in situ exsolution under reducing atmosphere provide catalytically active metal/oxide interfaces for CO₂ electrolysis in solid oxide electrolysis cell. However, there are critical challenges to obtain abundant metal/oxide interfaces due to the sluggish diffusion process of dopant cations inside the bulk perovskite. Herein, we propose a strategy to promote exsolution of RuFe alloy nanoparticles on Sr₂Fe_1.4Ru_0.1Mo_0.5O_6−δ perovskite by enriching the active Ru underneath the perovskite surface via repeated redox manipulations. In situ scanning transmission electron microscopy demonstrates the dynamic structure evolution of Sr₂Fe_1.4Ru_0.1Mo_0.5O_6−δ perovskite under reducing and oxidizing atmosphere, as well as the facilitated CO₂ adsorption at RuFe@Sr₂Fe_1.4Ru_0.1Mo_0.5O_6−δ interfaces. Solid oxide electrolysis cell with RuFe@Sr₂Fe_1.4Ru_0.1Mo_0.5O_6−δ interfaces shows over 74.6% enhancement in current density of CO₂ electrolysis compared to that with Sr₂Fe_1.4Ru_0.1Mo_0.5O_6−δ counterpart as well as impressive stability for 1000 h at 1.2 V and 800 °C.

Defect engineering of oxide perovskites for catalysis and energy storage: synthesis of chemistry and materials science

Oxide perovskites have emerged as an important class of materials with important applications in many technological areas, particularly thermocatalysis, electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, and energy storage. However, their implementation faces numerous challenges that are familiar to the chemist and materials scientist. The present work surveys the state-of-the-art by integrating these two viewpoints, focusing on the critical role that defect engineering plays in the design, fabrication, modification, and application of these materials. An extensive review of experimental and simulation studies of the synthesis and performance of oxide perovskites and devices containing these materials is coupled with exposition of the fundamental and applied aspects of defect equilibria. The aim of this approach is to elucidate how these issues can be integrated in order to shed light on the interpretation of the data and what trajectories are suggested by them. This critical examination has revealed a number of areas in which the review can provide a greater understanding. These include considerations of (1) the nature and formation of solid solutions, (2) site filling and stoichiometry, (3) the rationale for the design of defective oxide perovskites, and (4) the complex mechanisms of charge compensation and charge transfer. The review concludes with some proposed strategies to address the challenges in the future development of oxide perovskites and their applications.

Exsolution of Ni Nanoparticles from A-Site-Deficient Layered Double Perovskites for Dry Reforming of Methane and as an Anode Material for a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell

Exsolution is a promising technique to design metal nanoparticles for electrocatalysis and renewable energy. In this work, Ni-doped perovskites, (Pr_0.5Ba_0.5)_1-x/2Mn_1-x/2Ni_x/2O_3-δ with x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, and 0.2 (S-PBMNx), were prepared to design exsolution systems as solid oxide fuel cell anodes and for catalysis applications. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses demonstrated that correlating A-site deficiency with Ni content can effectively induce exsolution of all Ni under H₂ atmosphere at T ∼ 875 °C, yielding the reduced (exsolved) R-PBMNx materials. On heating the exsolution systems in air, metal incorporation in the oxide lattice did not occur; instead, the Ni nanoparticles oxidized to NiO on the layered perovskite surface. The lowest area-specific resistance (ASR) under wet 5% H₂/N₂ in symmetrical cells was observed for R-PBMN0.2 anode (ASR ∼ 0.64 Ω cm² at 850 °C) due to the highest Ni particle density in the R-PBMNx series. The best performance for dry reforming of methane (DRM) was also obtained for R-PBMN0.2, with CH₄ and CO₂ conversion rates at 11 and 32%, respectively, and the highest production of H₂ (37%). The DRM activity of R-PBMN0.2 starts at 800 °C and is sustained for up to at least 5 h operation with little carbon deposition (0.017 g·gcat^-1·h^-1). These results clearly demonstrate that varying Ni-doping in layered double perovskite oxides is an effective strategy to manipulate the electrochemical performance and catalytic activity for energy conversion purposes.

Enhancing Thermocatalytic Activities by Upshifting the d-Band Center of Exsolved Co-Ni-Fe Ternary Alloy Nanoparticles for the Dry Reforming of Methane

Dry reforming of methane (DRM) is a feasible solution to address the reduction of greenhouse gases stipulated by the Paris Climate Agreement, given that it adds value by converting trivial gases, CO₂ and CH₄ , simultaneously into useful syngas. However, the conventional Ni catalyst undergoes deactivation due to carbon coking and particle agglomeration. Here we demonstrate a highly efficient and durable DRM catalyst: exsolved Co-Ni-Fe ternary alloy nanoparticles on the layered perovskite PrBaMn_1.7 Co_0.1 Ni_0.2 O_5+δ produced by topotactic exsolution. This method readily allows the generation of a larger number of exsolved nanoparticles with enhanced catalytic activity above that of Ni monometallic and Co-Ni bimetallic particles. The enhancement is achieved by the upshift of the d-band center of Co-Ni-Fe relative to those of Co-Ni and Ni, meaning easier charge donation to the adsorbate. Furthermore, the exsolved catalyst shows exceptional stability, with continuous DRM operation for about 350 hours.

Exploring the Stability of Fe–Ni Alloy Nanoparticles Exsolved from Double-Layered Perovskites for Dry Reforming of Methane

Exsolution is emerging as a promising route for the creation of nanoparticles that remain anchored to the oxide support, imparting remarkable stability in high temperature chemical processes such as dry reforming of methane. This process takes place at temperatures around 850 °C, which causes sintering-related issues in catalysts prepared using conventional impregnation methods, which could be overcome by using exsolution functionalized oxides. In this work, FeNi3 alloy nanoparticles exsolved from Sr2FexNi1-xMoO6-δ double-layered perovskites were evaluated as a dry reforming catalyst, paying special attention to structure–activity relationships. Our results indicate that increasing the Ni content favors the nanoparticle dispersion, eventually leading to increased CO2 and CH4 conversions. The exsolved nanoparticles presented remarkable nanoparticle size (ca. 30 nm) stability after the 10 h treatment, although the formation of some phase segregations over the course of the reaction caused a minor decrease in the nanoparticle population. Overall, the results presented here serve as materials processing guidelines that could find further potential use in the design of more efficient (electro)catalysts in other fuel production or energy conversion technologies.

Activation Strategies of Perovskite-Type Structure for Applications in Oxygen-Related Electrocatalysts

The oxygen-related electrochemical process, including the oxygen evolution reaction and oxygen reduction reaction, is usually a kinetically sluggish reaction and thus dominates the whole efficiency of energy storage and conversion devices. Owing to the dominant role of the oxygen-related electrochemical process in the development of electrochemical energy, an abundance of oxygen-related electrocatalysts is discovered. Among them, perovskite-type materials with flexible crystal and electronic structures have been researched for a long time. However, most perovskite materials still show low intrinsic activity, which highlights the importance of activation strategies for perovskite-type structures to improve their intrinsic activity. In this review, the recent progress of the activation strategies for perovskite-type structures is summarized and their related applications in oxygen-related electrocatalysis reactions, including electrochemistry water splitting, metal-air batteries, and solid oxide fuel cells are discussed. Furthermore, the existing challenges and the future perspectives for the designing of ideal perovskite-type structure catalysts are proposed and discussed.

Emergence and Future of Exsolved Materials

Supported nanoparticle systems have received increased attention over the last decades because of their potential for high activity levels when applied to chemical conversions, although, because of their nanoscale nature, they tend to exhibit problems with long-term durability. Over the last decade, the discovery of the so-called exsolution concept has addressed many of these challenges and opened many other opportunities to material design by providing a relatively simple, single-step, synthetic pathway to produce supported nanoparticles that combine high stability against agglomeration and poisoning with high activity across multiple areas of application. Here, the trends that define the development of the exsolution concept are reviewed in terms of design, functionality, tunability, and applicability. To support this, the number of studies dedicated to both fundamental and application-related studies, as well as the types of metallic nanoparticles and host or support lattices employed, are examined. Exciting future directions of research are also highlighted.

Progress of Exsolved Metal Nanoparticles on Oxides as High Performance (Electro)Catalysts for the Conversion of Small Molecules

Utilizing electricity and heat from renewable energy to convert small molecules into value-added chemicals through electro/thermal catalytic processes has enormous socioeconomic and environmental benefits. However, the lack of catalysts with high activity, good long-term stability, and low cost strongly inhibits the practical implementation of these processes. Oxides with exsolved metal nanoparticles have recently been emerging as promising catalysts with outstanding activity and stability for the conversion of small molecules, which provides new possibilities for application of the processes. In this review, it starts with an introduction on the mechanism of exsolution, discussing representative exsolution materials, the impacts of intrinsic material properties and external environmental conditions on the exsolution behavior, and the driving forces for exsolution. The performances of exsolution materials in various reactions, such as alkane reforming reaction, carbon monoxide oxidation, carbon dioxide utilization, high temperature steam electrolysis, and low temperature electrocatalysis, are then summarized. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives for the development of exsolution materials as high-performance catalysts are discussed.

Junction and energy band on novel semiconductor-based fuel cells

Fuel cells are highly efficient and green power sources. The typical membrane electrode assembly is necessary for common electrochemical devices. Recent research and development in solid oxide fuel cells have opened up many new opportunities based on the semiconductor or its heterostructure materials. Semiconductor-based fuel cells (SBFCs) realize the fuel cell functionality in a much more straightforward way. This work aims to discuss new strategies and scientific principles of SBFCs by reviewing various novel junction types/interfaces, i.e., bulk and planar p-n junction, Schottky junction, and n-i type interface contact. New designing methodologies of SBFCs from energy band/alignment and built-in electric field (BIEF), which block the internal electronic transport while assisting interfacial superionic transport and subsequently enhance device performance, are comprehensively reviewed. This work highlights the recent advances of SBFCs and provides new methodology and understanding with significant importance for both fundamental and applied R&D on new-generation fuel cell materials and technologies.

Weakening the strong Fe-La interaction in A-site-deficient perovskite via Ni substitution to promote the thermocatalytic synthesis of carbon nanotubes from plastics

The variation of metal-support interaction (MSI) plays a key role in the synthesis of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) based on chemical vapor deposition process. This work concentrates on weakening the interaction of Fe-La in an A-site-deficient perovskite (La_0.8FeO_3-δ) via Ni partial substitution. After reductive treatment, the catalysts were employed for thermocatalytic synthesis of CNTs from plastics. Following the structural, morphological and chemical changes, the catalytic activities of the reductive La_0.8Ni_xFe_1-xO_3-δ (H-LN_xF_1-x, x = 0, 0.15, 0.5, 0.85) were correlated with the degree of MSI. Compared with H-LF sample, the H-LN_0.15F_0.85 sample exhibited the highest catalytic activity, which was attributable to the highest surface coverage of metals as well as the synergistic effect of Fe and Ni species. The yield of CNTs produced from low density polyethylene was 1.44 g/g_catalyst over the H-LN_0.15F_0.85 sample, which was much higher than that over H-LF sample (0.38 g/g_catalyst).

Nanoparticle Ex-solution for Supported Catalysts: Materials Design, Mechanism and Future Perspectives

Supported metal catalysts represent one of the major milestones in heterogeneous catalysis. Such catalytic systems are feasible for use in a broad range of applications, including renewable energy devices, sensors, automotive emission control systems, and chemical reformers. The lifetimes of these catalytic platforms depend strongly on the stability of the supported nanoparticles. With this regard, nanoparticles synthesized via ex-solution process emphasize exceptional robustness as they are socketed in the host oxide. Ex-solution refers to a phenomenon which yields selective growth of fine and uniformly distributed metal nanocatalysts on oxide supports upon partial reduction. This type of advanced structural engineering is a game-changer in the field of heterogeneous catalysis with numerous studies showing the benefits of ex-solution process. In this review, we highlight the latest research efforts regarding the origin of the ex-solution phenomenon and the mechanism underpinning particle formation. We also propose research directions to expand the utility and functionality of the current ex-solution techniques.

Studies of exsolution and catalytic activity of metal nanocatalysts from parent perovskite

Defective Sr0.9Mo0.9O3−δ perovskites with exsolved Ni nanoparticles as high-performance composite anodes for solid-oxide fuel cells

Metal Exsolution to Enhance the Catalytic Activity of Electrodes in Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Exsolution is a novel technology for attaching metal catalyst particles onto ceramic anodes in the solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). The exsolved metal particles in the anode exhibit unique properties for reaction and have demonstrated remarkable stabilities under conditions that normally lead to coking. Despite extensive investigations, the underlying principles behind exsolution are still under investigation. In this review, the present status of exsolution materials for SOFC applications is reported, including a description of the fundamental concepts behind metal incorporation in oxide lattices, a listing of proposed mechanisms and thermodynamics of the exsolution process and a discussion on the catalytic properties of the resulting materials. Prospects and opportunities to use materials produced by exsolution for SOFC are discussed.

Highly active dry methane reforming catalysts with boosted in situ grown Ni-Fe nanoparticles on perovskite via atomic layer deposition

With the need for more stable and active metal catalysts for dry reforming of methane, in situ grown nanoparticles using exsolution are a promising approach. However, in conventional exsolution, most nanoparticles remain underneath the surface because of the sluggish diffusion rate of cations. Here, we report the atomic layer deposition (ALD)-combined topotactic exsolution on La_0.6Sr_0.2Ti_0.85Ni_0.15O_3-δ toward developing active and durable catalysts. The uniform and quantitatively controlled layer of Fe via ALD facilitates the topotactic exsolution, increasing finely dispersed nanoparticles. The introduction of Fe₂O₃ yields the formation of Ni-Fe alloy owing to the spontaneous alloy formation energy of -0.43 eV, leading to an enhancement of the catalytic activity for dry methane reforming with a prolonged stability of 410 hours. Overall, the abundant alloy nanocatalysts via ALD mark an important step forward in the evolution of exsolution and its application to the field of energy utilization.
