Observation of domain wall bimerons in chiral magnets

Tuning of electrical, magnetic, and topological properties of magnetic Weyl semimetal Mn3+xGe by Fe doping

We report on the tuning of electrical, magnetic, and topological properties of the magnetic Weyl semimetal (Mn3+xGe) by Fe doping at the Mn site, Mn(3+x)-δFeδGe (δ= 0, 0.30, and 0.62). Fe doping significantly changes the electrical and magnetic properties of Mn3+xGe. The resistivity of the parent compound displays metallic behavior, the system withδ= 0.30 of Fe doping exhibits semiconducting or bad-metallic behavior, and the system withδ= 0.62 of Fe doping demonstrates a metal-insulator transition at around 100 K. Further, we observe that the Fe doping increases in-plane ferromagnetism, magnetocrystalline anisotropy, and induces a spin-glass state at low temperatures. Surprisingly, topological Hall state has been noticed at a Fe doping ofδ= 0.30 that is not found in the parent compound or withδ= 0.62 of Fe doping. In addition, spontaneous anomalous Hall effect observed in the parent system is significantly reduced with increasing Fe doping concentration.

Manipulating two-dimensional magnetic states via electric field and pressure

Topological spin configurations have been an intriguing topic due to the exotic transport properties and promising applications in spintronic devices. The discovery of two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials such as CrI3 provides new platforms for manipulating magnetic structures. Here, by first-principles calculations and Monte Carlo methods, we investigated the exchange interaction and magnetic states of 2D van der Waals ferromagnetic/ferroelectric heterostructure CrI3/In2Se3. By switching the polarization in the ferroelectric In2Se3 layer under an electric field and changing the interlayer distance between CrI3 and In2Se3 under pressure, four spin configurations, ferromagnetic states, topological domain wall skyrmions, topological bimerons, and stripe domains can be realized. These striking tunable magnetic states can be understood from the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and single-ion anisotropy parameters being modified by switching the polarization and changing the interlayer distance. Our results of controllable topological/non-topological spin states broaden the spin phenomena and potential of spintronic applications in van der Waals heterostructures.

Nonreciprocal Phonon Propagation in a Metallic Chiral Magnet

The phonon magnetochiral effect (MChE) is the nonreciprocal acoustic and thermal transports of phonons caused by the simultaneous breaking of the mirror and time-reversal symmetries. So far, the phonon MChE has been observed only in a ferrimagnetic insulator Cu_{2}OSeO_{3}, where the nonreciprocal response disappears above the Curie temperature of 58 K. Here, we study the nonreciprocal acoustic properties of a room-temperature ferromagnet Co_{9}Zn_{9}Mn_{2} for unveiling the phonon MChE close to room temperature. Surprisingly, the nonreciprocity in this metallic compound is enhanced at higher temperatures and observed up to 250 K. This clear contrast between insulating Cu_{2}OSeO_{3} and metallic Co_{9}Zn_{9}Mn_{2} suggests that metallic magnets have a mechanism to enhance the nonreciprocity at higher temperatures. From the ultrasound and microwave-spectroscopy experiments, we conclude that the magnitude of the phonon MChE of Co_{9}Zn_{9}Mn_{2} mostly depends on the Gilbert damping, which increases at low temperatures and hinders the magnon-phonon hybridization. Our results suggest that the phonon nonreciprocity could be further enhanced by engineering the magnon band of materials.

Doping Control of Magnetic Anisotropy for Stable Antiskyrmion Formation in Schreibersite (Fe,Ni)3 P with S4 symmetry

Magnetic skyrmions, vortex-like topological spin textures, have attracted much interest in a wide range of research fields from fundamental physics to spintronics applications. Recently, growing attention is also paid to antiskyrmions emerging with opposite topological charge in non-centrosymmetric magnets with D_2d or S₄ symmetry. In these magnets, complex interplay among anisotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, uniaxial magnetic anisotropy, and magnetic dipolar interactions generates various magnetic textures. However, the precise role of these magnetic interactions in stabilizing antiskyrmions remains to be elucidated. In this work, the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy of schreibersite (Fe,Ni)₃ P with S₄ symmetry is controlled by doping and its impact on the stability of antiskyrmions is investigated. The authors' magnetometry study, supported by ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy, shows that the variation of the Ni content and slight doping with 4d transition metals considerably change the magnetic anisotropy. In particular, doping with Pd induces easy-axis anisotropy, giving rise to formation of antiskyrmions, while a temperature-induced spin reorientation is observed in an Rh-doped compound. In combination with Lorentz transmission electron microscopy and micromagnetic simulations, the stability of antiskyrmion as functions of uniaxial anisotropy and demagnetization energy is quantitatively analyzed, and demonstrated that subtle balance between them is necessary to stabilize the antiskyrmions.

Wigner solids of domain wall skyrmions

Detection and characterization of a different type of topological excitations, namely the domain wall (DW) skyrmion, has received increasing attention because the DW is ubiquitous from condensed matter to particle physics and cosmology. Here we present experimental evidence for the DW skyrmion as the ground state stabilized by long-range Coulomb interactions in a quantum Hall ferromagnet. We develop an alternative approach using nonlocal resistance measurements together with a local NMR probe to measure the effect of low current-induced dynamic nuclear polarization and thus to characterize the DW under equilibrium conditions. The dependence of nuclear spin relaxation in the DW on temperature, filling factor, quasiparticle localization, and effective magnetic fields allows us to interpret this ground state and its possible phase transitions in terms of Wigner solids of the DW skyrmion. These results demonstrate the importance of studying the intrinsic properties of quantum states that has been largely overlooked.

Skyrmions, a topological spin texture, have been found in a variety of magnetic systems, including quantum hall ferromagnets. Here, Yang et al demonstrate the existence of skyrmions in domain walls in a quantum Hall ferromagnet, and suggest that these skyrmions form a 1D Wigner crystal.

Field-free topological behavior in the magnetic domain wall of ferrimagnetic GdFeCo

Exploring and controlling topological textures such as merons and skyrmions has attracted enormous interests from the perspective of fundamental research and spintronic applications. It has been predicted theoretically and proved experimentally that the lattice form of topological meron-skyrmion transformation can be realized with the requirement of external magnetic fields in chiral ferromagnets. However, such topological transition behavior has yet to be verified in other materials. Here, we report real-space observation of magnetic topology transformation between meron pairs and skyrmions in the localized domain wall of ferrimagnetic GdFeCo films without the need of magnetic fields. The topological transformation in the domain wall of ferrimagnet is introduced by temperature-induced spin reorientation transition (SRT) and the underlying mechanism is revealed by micromagnetic simulations. The convenient electric-controlling topology transformation and driving motion along the confined domain wall is further anticipated, which will enable advanced application in magnetic devices.

Merons and Skyrmions, two topological spin-textures, have attracted a lot of interests due to their potential use in information storage. Here, the authors demonstrate the transformation of Meron pairs into Skyrmions without an applied magnetic field within domain walls of GdFeCo films.
