Reversing sintering effect of Ni particles on γ-Mo2N via strong metal support interaction

Surface topology of MXene flakes induces the selection of the sintering mechanism for supported Pt nanoparticles

Sintering of metal nanocatalysts leading to particle growth and subsequent performance deactivation is a primary issue that hinders their practical applications. While metal-support interaction (MSI) is considered as the critical factor which influences the sintering behavior, the underlying microscopic mechanism and kinetics remain incompletely understood. Here, by using in situ scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and theoretical analysis, we reveal the selection rule of the sintering mechanism for Pt nanoparticles on a two-dimensional (2D) MXene (Ti3C2T x ) support, which relies on the surface topology of MXene flakes. It is demonstrated that the sintering of Pt nanoparticles proceeds via Ostwald ripening (OR) in the surface defect (such as steps and pore edges) regions of MXene flakes due to strong MSI on the Pt/MXene interface; conversely, weak MSI between Pt nanoparticles and the planar surface of MXene leads to prevalent particle migration and coalescence (PMC) for sintering. Furthermore, our quantitative analysis shows a significant divergence in sintering rates for PMC and OR processes. These microscopic observations suggest a clear "sintering mechanism-MSI" relationship for Pt/MXene nanocatalysts and may shed light on the design of novel nanocatalysts.

Redispersing Ir Nanoparticles via a Carbon-Assisted Pyrolysis Process to Break the Activity-Stability Trade-Off of H2 Sensors

Oxide semiconductor-supported metal nanoparticles often suffer from a high-temperature gas sensing process, resulting in agglomeration and coalescence, which significantly decrease their surface activity and stability. Here, we develop an in situ pyrolysis strategy to redisperse commercial Ir particles (∼15.6 nm) into monodisperse Ir species (∼5.4 nm) on ZnO supports, exhibiting excellent sintering-resistant properties and H2 sensing. We find that large-size Ir nanoparticles can undergo an unexpected splitting decomposition process and spontaneously migrate along the encapsulated carbon layer surface during high-temperature pyrolysis of ZIF-8. This resultant monodisperse status can be integrally reserved, accompanying further oxidation sintering. The final Irred/ZnO-450-based sensor exhibits outstanding stability, H2 response (10-2000 ppm), fast response/recovery capability (7/9.7 s@100 ppm), and good moisture resistance. In situ Raman and ex situ XPS further experimentally verify that highly dispersive Ir species can promote the electron transfer process during the gas sensing process. Our strategy thus provides important insights into the design of agglomeration-resistant gas sensing materials for highly effective H2 detection.

Transition metal nitride catalysts for selective conversion of oxygen-containing molecules

Earth abundant transition metal nitrides (TMNs) are a promising group of catalysts for a wide range of thermocatalytic, electrocatalytic and photocatalytic reactions, with potential to achieve high activity and selectivity while reducing reliance on the use of Pt-group metals. However, current fundamental understanding of the active sites of these materials and the mechanisms by which selective transformations occur is somewhat lacking. Recent investigations of these materials from our group and others have utilized probe molecules, model surfaces, and in situ techniques to elucidate the origin of their activity, strong metal-support interactions, and unique d-band electronic structures. This Perspective discusses three classes of reactions for which TMNs have been used as case studies to highlight how these properties, along with synergistic interactions with metal overlayers, can be exploited to design active, selective and stable TMN catalysts. First, studies of the reactions of C1 molecules will be discussed, specifically highlighting the ability of TMNs to activate CO2. Second, the upgrading of biomass and biomass-derived oxygenates over TMN catalysts will be reviewed. Third, the use of TMNs for H2 production via water electrolysis will be discussed. Finally, we will discuss the challenges and future directions in the study of TMN catalysts, in particular expanding on opportunities to enhance fundamental mechanistic understanding using model surfaces, the elucidation of active centers via in situ techniques, and the development of efficient synthesis methods and design principles.

Thermally stable Ni foam-supported inverse CeAlOx/Ni ensemble as an active structured catalyst for CO2 hydrogenation to methane

Nickel is the most widely used inexpensive active metal center of the heterogeneous catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation to methane. However, Ni-based catalysts suffer from severe deactivation in CO2 methanation reaction due to the irreversible sintering and coke deposition caused by the inevitable localized hotspots generated during the vigorously exothermic reaction. Herein, we demonstrate the inverse CeAlOx/Ni composite constructed on the Ni-foam structure support realizes remarkable CO2 methanation catalytic activity and stability in a wide operation temperature range from 240 to 600 °C. Significantly, CeAlOx/Ni/Ni-foam catalyst maintains its initial activity after seven drastic heating-cooling cycles from RT to 240 to 600 °C. Meanwhile, the structure catalyst also shows water resistance and long-term stability under reaction condition. The promising thermal stability and water-resistance of CeAlOx/Ni/Ni-foam originate from the excellent heat and mass transport efficiency which eliminates local hotspots and the formation of Ni-foam stabilized CeAlOx/Ni inverse composites which effectively anchored the active species and prevents carbon deposition from CH4 decomposition.

Simultaneous secondary electron microscopy in the scanning transmission electron microscope with applications for in situ studies

Scanning/transmission electron microscopy (STEM) is a powerful characterization tool for a wide range of materials. Over the years, STEMs have been extensively used for in situ studies of structural evolution and dynamic processes. A limited number of STEM instruments are equipped with a secondary electron (SE) detector in addition to the conventional transmitted electron detectors, i.e. the bright-field (BF) and annular dark-field (ADF) detectors. Such instruments are capable of simultaneous BF-STEM, ADF-STEM and SE-STEM imaging. These methods can reveal the 'bulk' information from BF and ADF signals and the surface information from SE signals for materials <200 nm thick. This review first summarizes the field of in situ STEM research, followed by the generation of SE signals, SE-STEM instrumentation and applications of SE-STEM analysis. Combining with various in situ heating, gas reaction and mechanical testing stages based on microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), we show that simultaneous SE-STEM imaging has found applications in studying the dynamics and transient phenomena of surface reconstructions, exsolution of catalysts, lunar and planetary materials and mechanical properties of 2D thin films. Finally, we provide an outlook on the potential advancements in SE-STEM from the perspective of sample-related factors, instrument-related factors and data acquisition and processing.

Water-assisted oxidative redispersion of Cu particles through formation of Cu hydroxide at room temperature

Sintering of active metal species often happens during catalytic reactions, which requires redispersion in a reactive atmosphere at elevated temperatures to recover the activity. Herein, we report a simple method to redisperse sintered Cu catalysts via O2-H2O treatment at room temperature. In-situ spectroscopic characterizations reveal that H2O induces the formation of hydroxylated Cu species in humid O2, pushing surface diffusion of Cu atoms at room temperature. Further, surface OH groups formed on most hydroxylable support surfaces such as γ-Al2O3, SiO2, and CeO2 in the humid atmosphere help to pull the mobile Cu species and enhance Cu redispersion. Both pushing and pulling effects of gaseous H2O promote the structural transformation of Cu aggregates into highly dispersed Cu species at room temperature, which exhibit enhanced activity in reverse water gas shift and preferential oxidation of carbon monoxide reactions. These findings highlight the important role of H2O in the dynamic structure evolution of supported metal nanocatalysts and lay the foundation for the regeneration of sintered catalysts under mild conditions.

A nonmetallic plasmonic catalyst for photothermal CO2 flow conversion with high activity, selectivity and durability

The meticulous design of active sites and light absorbers holds the key to the development of high-performance photothermal catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation. Here, we report a nonmetallic plasmonic catalyst of Mo2N/MoO2-x nanosheets by integrating a localized surface plasmon resonance effect with two distinct types of active sites for CO2 hydrogenation. Leveraging the synergism of dual active sites, H2 and CO2 molecules can be simultaneously adsorbed and activated on N atom and O vacancy, respectively. Meanwhile, the plasmonic effect of this noble-metal-free catalyst signifies its promising ability to convert photon energy into localized heat. Consequently, Mo2N/MoO2-x nanosheets exhibit remarkable photothermal catalytic performance in reverse water-gas shift reaction. Under continuous full-spectrum light irradiation (3 W·cm-2) for a duration of 168 h, the nanosheets achieve a CO yield rate of 355 mmol·gcat-1·h-1 in a flow reactor with a selectivity exceeding 99%. This work offers valuable insights into the precise design of noble-metal-free active sites and the development of plasmonic catalysts for reducing carbon footprints.

Renaissance of Strong Metal-Support Interactions

Strong metal-support interactions (SMSIs) have emerged as a significant and cutting-edge area of research in heterogeneous catalysis. They play crucial roles in modifying the chemisorption properties, interfacial structure, and electronic characteristics of supported metals, thereby exerting a profound influence on the catalytic properties. This Perspective aims to provide a comprehensive summary of the latest advancements and insights into SMSIs, with a focus on state-of-the-art in situ/operando characterization techniques. This overview also identifies innovative designs and applications of new types of SMSI systems in catalytic chemistry and highlights their pivotal role in enhancing catalytic performance, selectivity, and stability in specific cases. Particularly notable is the discovery of SMSI between active metals and metal carbides, which opens up a new era in the field of SMSI. Additionally, the strong interactions between atomically dispersed metals and supports are discussed, with an emphasis on the electronic effects of the support. The chemical nature of SMSI and its underlying catalytic mechanisms are also elaborated upon. It is evident that SMSI modification has become a powerful tool for enhancing catalytic performance in various catalytic applications.

Precise Interstitial Built-In Electric Field Tuning for Hydrogen Evolution Electrocatalysis

The built-in electric field (BEF) has become an effective means of adjusting the electronic structure and hydrogen spillover to influence the adsorption of intermediates. However, the previously reported BEF cannot be tuned continuously and precisely. Herein, a series of nanocatalysts with interstitial BEF were successfully synthesized, and the effect of precisely tuned interstitial BEF on the intermediate's adsorption and hydrogen spillover was systematically investigated using changing the insertion of interstitial B. Three catalysts with different BEF strengths were obtained by changing the interstitial content (B0.22-Cu/NC, B0.30-Cu/NC, B0.41-Cu/NC), and it was demonstrated that B0.30-Cu/NC gave the best catalytic performance for hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs). The turnover frequency (TOF) value is shown to reach 0.36 s-1 at just -0.1 V vs. RHE, which is about 3 times that of Cu (0.12 s-1). For the HER, it is one of the best Cu-based catalysts reported to date (Table S3). Besides, when the catalyst was applied to the cathode of the PEM water electrolyzer, B0.30-Cu/NC exhibited long-time stability at a water-splitting current density of 500 mA cm-2. Density functional theory and in situ Raman spectroscopy suggest that a suitable interstitial BEF can not only optimize the intermediate's adsorption but also promote hydrogen spillover.

Environmental TEM Study of the Dispersion of Au/α-MoC: From Nanoparticles to Two-Dimensional Clusters

The synthesis of highly dispersed Au nanoclusters that are stable under elevated temperatures in heterogeneous catalysis is challenging. Here, we directly observe a strong metal-support interaction (SMSI)-induced dispersion of Au nanoparticles (NPs) on α-MoC using an environmentally atomically resolved secondary imaging technique. Under a realistic environment, Au NPs flatten and spread out on the α-MoC to form two-dimensional atomic layered clusters. The formed highly dispersed Au/α-MoC catalyst shows excellent stability at 600 °C for 160 h in the reverse water-gas shift reaction. The X-ray photoelectron spectrum and extended X-ray absorption fine structure results show that Au NPs gradually become low-coordination-number cluster species and lose electrons to become Auδ+; these form chemical bonds with the α-MoC support and are responsible for the dispersion behavior. This work provides an insightful understanding of dispersion behavior and promotes the rational design and synthesis of reverse sintering catalysts.

Cu-based high-entropy two-dimensional oxide as stable and active photothermal catalyst

Cu-based nanocatalysts are the cornerstone of various industrial catalytic processes. Synergistically strengthening the catalytic stability and activity of Cu-based nanocatalysts is an ongoing challenge. Herein, the high-entropy principle is applied to modify the structure of Cu-based nanocatalysts, and a PVP templated method is invented for generally synthesizing six-eleven dissimilar elements as high-entropy two-dimensional (2D) materials. Taking 2D Cu₂Zn₁Al_0.5Ce₅Zr_0.5O_x as an example, the high-entropy structure not only enhances the sintering resistance from 400 °C to 800 °C but also improves its CO₂ hydrogenation activity to a pure CO production rate of 417.2 mmol g^-1 h^-1 at 500 °C, 4 times higher than that of reported advanced catalysts. When 2D Cu₂Zn₁Al_0.5Ce₅Zr_0.5O_x are applied to the photothermal CO₂ hydrogenation, it exhibits a record photochemical energy conversion efficiency of 36.2%, with a CO generation rate of 248.5 mmol g^-1 h^-1 and 571 L of CO yield under ambient sunlight irradiation. The high-entropy 2D materials provide a new route to simultaneously achieve catalytic stability and activity, greatly expanding the application boundaries of photothermal catalysis.

Ensemble Effect of Ruthenium Single-Atom and Nanoparticle Catalysts for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution in Neutral Media

Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) plays a key role in electrochemical water splitting, which is a sustainable way for hydrogen production. The kinetics of HER is sluggish in neutral media that requires noble metal catalysts to alleviate energy consumption during the HER process. Here, we present a catalyst comprising a ruthenium single atom (Ru₁) and nanoparticle (Ru_n) loaded on the nitrogen-doped carbon substrate (Ru₁-Ru_n/CN), which exhibits excellent activity and superior durability for neutral HER. Benefiting from the synergistic effect between single atoms and nanoparticles in the Ru₁-Ru_n/CN, the catalyst exhibits a very low overpotential down to 32 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 while maintaining excellent stability up to 700 h at a current density of 20 mA cm^-2 during the long-term test. Computational calculations reveal that, in the Ru₁-Ru_n/CN catalyst, the existence of Ru nanoparticles affects the interactions between Ru single-atom sites and reactants and thus improves the catalytic activity of HER. This work highlights the ensemble effect of electrocatalysts for HER and could shed light on the rational design of efficient catalysts for other multistep electrochemical reactions.

Nonclassical Strong Metal-Support Interactions for Enhanced Catalysis

Strong metal-support interaction (SMSI), which encompasses reversible encapsulation and de-encapsulation and modulation of surface adsorption properties, imposes great impacts on the performance of heterogeneous catalysts. Recent development of SMSI has surpassed the prototypical encapsulated Pt-TiO₂ catalyst, affording a series of conceptually novel and practically advantageous catalytic systems. Here we provide our perspective on recent progress in nonclassical SMSIs for enhanced catalysis. Unravelling the structural complexity of SMSI necessitates the combination of multiple characterization techniques at different scales. Synthesis strategies leveraging chemical, photonic, and mechanochemical driving forces further expand the definition and application scope of SMSI. Exquisite structure engineering permits elucidation of the interface, entropy, and size effect on the geometric and electronic characteristics. Materials innovation places the atomically thin two-dimensional materials at the forefront of interfacial active site control. A broader space is awaiting exploration, where exploitation of metal-support interactions brings compelling catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability.

Confinement Effects in Well-Defined Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) for Selective CO2 Hydrogenation: A Review

Decarbonization has become an urgent affair to restrain global warming. CO₂ hydrogenation coupled with H₂ derived from water electrolysis is considered a promising route to mitigate the negative impact of carbon emission and also promote the application of hydrogen. It is of great significance to develop catalysts with excellent performance and large-scale implementation. In the past decades, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely involved in the rational design of catalysts for CO₂ hydrogenation due to their high surface areas, tunable porosities, well-ordered pore structures, and diversities in metals and functional groups. Confinement effects in MOFs or MOF-derived materials have been reported to promote the stability of CO₂ hydrogenation catalysts, such as molecular complexes of immobilization effect, active sites in size effect, stabilization in the encapsulation effect, and electron transfer and interfacial catalysis in the synergistic effect. This review attempts to summarize the progress of MOF-based CO₂ hydrogenation catalysts up to now, and demonstrate the synthetic strategies, unique features, and enhancement mechanisms compared with traditionally supported catalysts. Great emphasis will be placed on various confinement effects in CO₂ hydrogenation. The challenges and opportunities in precise design, synthesis, and applications of MOF-confined catalysis for CO₂ hydrogenation are also summarized.

Tripodal Pd metallenes mediated by Nb2C MXenes for boosting alkynes semihydrogenation

2D metallene nanomaterials have spurred considerable attention in heterogeneous catalysis by virtue of sufficient unsaturated metal atoms, high specific surface area and surface strain. Nevertheless, the strong metallic bonding in nanoparticles aggravates the difficulty in the controllable regulation of the geometry of metallenes. Here we propose an efficient galvanic replacement strategy to construct Pd metallenes loaded on Nb₂C MXenes at room temperature, which is triggered by strong metal-support interaction based on MD simulations. The Pd metallenes feature a chair structure of six-membered ring with the coordination number of Pd as low as 3. Coverage-dependent kinetic analysis based on first-principles calculations reveals that the tripodal Pd metallenes promote the diffusion of alkene and inhibit its overhydrogenation. As a consequence, Pd/Nb₂C delivers an outstanding turnover frequency of 10372 h^-1 and a high selectivity of 96% at 25 ^oC in the semihydrogenation of alkynes without compromising the stability. This strategy is general and scalable considering the plentiful members of the MXene family, which can set a foundation for the design of novel supported-metallene catalysts for demanding transformations.

Chemical Electron Microscopy (CEM) for Heterogeneous Catalysis at Nano: Recent Progress and Challenges

Chemical electron microscopy (CEM), a toolbox that comprises imaging and spectroscopy techniques, provides dynamic morphological, structural, chemical, and electronic information about an object in chemical environment under conditions of observable performance. CEM has experienced a revolutionary improvement in the past years and is becoming an effective characterization method for revealing the mechanism of chemical reactions, such as catalysis. Here, we mainly address the concept of CEM for heterogeneous catalysis in the gas phase and what CEM could uniquely contribute to catalysis, and illustrate what we can know better with CEM and the challenges and future development of CEM.

Hydrodeoxygenation of oleic acid over NiMo bimetallic catalysts supported on niobium phosphate

Pd Nanoparticles Supported on N-Doped TiO2 Nanosheets: Crystal Facets, Defective Sites, and Metal-Support Interactions Boost Reforming of Formaldehyde Solution for Hydrogen Production

To produce H₂ from formaldehyde (HCHO), dehydrogenation offers an alternative approach to future hydrogen-based energy sources, but the unsatisfactory efficiency hinders its practical application. Here, ultrafine Pd nanoparticle (NP) decorated N-doped TiO₂ nanosheets exposed with (001) facet catalysts (denoted as Pd/TiO_2-x) have been prepared and exhibit superior H₂ production performance from alkaline HCHO aqueous solution. Under our current conditions, the Pd/TiO_2-x catalyst with a Pd loading of 1 wt % exhibits a H₂ production rate of 183.77 mL/min/g, which is 1.75 and 3.66 times that of Pd/TiO₂ and Pd NPs, respectively. Based on the results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman, and liquid-phase electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spin-trapping experiments, the excellent H₂ generation of Pd/TiO_2-x can be attributed to the synergistic contribution among the reactive crystal facets, defective sites, and metal-support interactions in boosting the breakage of C-H bonds in HCHO, dissociation of H₂O, and ultimately the formation of H₂. This work is expected to provide a paradigm of an efficient catalyst to produce H₂ from HCHO/H₂O solution.

Ptn-Ov synergistic sites on MoOx/γ-Mo2N heterostructure for low-temperature reverse water-gas shift reaction

In heterogeneous catalysis, the interface between active metal and support plays a key role in catalyzing various reactions. Specially, the synergistic effect between active metals and oxygen vacancies on support can greatly promote catalytic efficiency. However, the construction of high-density metal-vacancy synergistic sites on catalyst surface is very challenging. In this work, isolated Pt atoms are first deposited onto a very thin-layer of MoO₃ surface stabilized on γ-Mo₂N. Subsequently, the Pt-MoO_x/γ-Mo₂N catalyst, containing abundant Pt cluster-oxygen vacancy (Pt_n-O_v) sites, is in situ constructed. This catalyst exhibits an unmatched activity and excellent stability in the reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) reaction at low temperature (300 °C). Systematic in situ characterizations illustrate that the MoO₃ structure on the γ-Mo₂N surface can be easily reduced into MoO_x (2 < x < 3), followed by the creation of sufficient oxygen vacancies. The Pt atoms are bonded with oxygen atoms of MoO_x, and stable Pt clusters are formed. These high-density Pt_n-O_v active sites greatly promote the catalytic activity. This strategy of constructing metal-vacancy synergistic sites provides valuable insights for developing efficient supported catalysts.

Atomic-Scale Structure Dynamics of Nanocrystals Revealed By In Situ and Environmental Transmission Electron Microscopy

Nanocrystals are of great importance in material sciences and industry. Engineering nanocrystals with desired structures and properties is no doubt one of the most important challenges in the field, which requires deep insight into atomic-scale dynamics of nanocrystals during the process. The rapid developments of in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM), especially environmental TEM, reveal insights into nanocrystals to digest. According to the considerable progress based on in situ electron microscopy, a comprehensive review on nanocrystal dynamics from three aspects: nucleation and growth, structure evolution, and dynamics in reaction conditions are given. In the nucleation and growth part, existing nucleation theories and growth pathways are organized based on liquid and gas-solid phases. In the structure evolution part, the focus is on in-depth mechanistic understanding of the evolution, including defects, phase, and disorder/order transitions. In the part of dynamics in reaction conditions, solid-solid and gas-solid interfaces of nanocrystals in atmosphere are discussed and the structure-property relationship is correlated. Even though impressive progress is made, additional efforts are required to develop the integrated and operando TEM methodologies for unveiling nanocrystal dynamics with high spatial, energy, and temporal resolutions.

A PtPdCoCuNi high-entropy alloy nanocatalyst for the hydrogenation of nitrobenzene

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) with multiple elements in near-equiatomic proportions hold great promise in heterogeneous catalysis because of their exceptional physicochemical properties governed by synergy. Herein, we prepared PtPdCoCuNi HEA nanoparticles via a one-step colloid-based route and tested their catalytic performance for nitrobenzene hydrogenation to aniline. The SiO₂ supported PtPdCoCuNi displays 93.9% yield of aniline at 80 °C, which is 2.11 times that of PtPd/SiO₂. Even at room temperature, a 47.4% yield of aniline is attained with the PtPdCoCuNi/SiO₂ catalyst. DRIFTS experiments indicate formation of isolated Pt and Pd sites after alloying the transition metals and evidence a stronger interaction between the HEA catalyst and nitrobenzene. Both XPS data and DFT calculations disclose charge transfer to Pt and Pd species, which eventually enhance the interaction between nitrobenzene and the isolated metal sites and the hydrogenation activity as well. The experimental and theoretical results shed light on mechanistic understanding of the unique catalytic performance of the HEA nanocatalyst and pave a new avenue to realize the high catalytic performance of nitrobenzene hydrogenation over well-isolated noble metal sites with specific geometries.

Kinetic diffusion-controlled synthesis of twinned intermetallic nanocrystals for CO-resistant catalysis

Intermetallic catalysts are of immense interest, but how heterometals diffuse and related interface structure remain unclear when there exists a strong metal-support interaction. Here, we developed a kinetic diffusion-controlled method and synthesized intermetallic Pt₂Mo nanocrystals with twin boundaries on mesoporous carbon (Pt₂Mo/C). The formation of small-sized twinned intermetallic nanocrystals is associated with the strong Mo-C interaction-induced slow Mo diffusion and the heterogeneity of alloying, which is revealed by an in situ aberration-corrected transmission electron microscope (TEM) at high temperature. The twinned Pt₂Mo/C constitutes a promising CO-resistant catalyst for highly selective hydrogenation of nitroarenes. Theoretical calculations and environmental TEM suggest that the weakened CO adsorption over Pt sites of Pt₂Mo twin boundaries and their local region endows them with high CO resistance, selectivity, and reusability. The present strategy paves the way for tailoring the interface structure of high-melting point Mo/W-based intermetallic nanocrystals that proved to be important for the industrially viable reactions.
