Codoped porous carbon nanofibres as a potassium metal host for nonaqueous K-ion batteries

Hexagon MXene based heterojunction interface with high ion adsorption and electron transfer efficiency for soft-package potassium-ions aqueous supercapacitors

Potassium-ion hybrid capacitors (PIHC) are considered as ideal large-scale rechargeable energy storage devices due to their low-cost, high-power density and environmental protection. However, a low energy density is the main factor restricting the practical application of PIHC. The interface is formed on the surface of electrode material of PIHC through strong correlation to construct heterojunction, which can significantly improve the performance of ion energy storage. However, how to reveal the influence of the interfacial state of the heterojunction on the adsorption and electron transmission of energy storage ions at the atomic level is still one of the key scientific problems in this field. In this work, metal ion intercalation and microwave-assisted in-situ etching are used to construct the Hexagon MXene Ti3C2 heterojunction with TiOHO strong correlation. At the interface of heterojunction, TiOHO highway for electron transmission is developed to improve the rate performance of PIHC. Through experimental and theoretical calculation, the optimum adsorption position and maximum adsorption amount of potassium-ion at the single interface of heterojunction are obtained, and the specific energy density of PIHC is increased. This lays a foundation for the practical application of high-performance soft-package PIHC.

A Universal Electronic Structure Modulation Strategy: Is Strong Adsorption Always Correlated with High Catalysis?

Unveiling the inherent link between polysulfide adsorption and catalytic activity is key to achieving optimal performance in Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Current research on the sulfur reaction process mainly relies on the strong adsorption of catalysts to confine lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) to the cathode side, effectively suppressing the shuttle effect of polysulfides. However, is strong adsorption always correlated with high catalysis? The inherent relationship between adsorption and catalytic activity remains unclear, limiting the in-depth exploration and rational design of catalysts. Herein, the correlation between "d-band center-adsorption strength-catalytic activity" in porous carbon nanofiber catalysts embedded with different transition metals (M-PCNF-3, M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) is systematically investigated, combining the d-band center theory and the Sabatier principle. Theoretical calculations and experimental analysis results indicate that Co-PCNF-3 electrocatalyst with appropriate d-band center positions exhibits moderate adsorption capability and the highest catalytic conversion activity for LiPSs, validating the Sabatier relationship in Li-S battery electrocatalysts. These findings provide indispensable guidelines for the rational design of more durable cathode catalysts for Li-S batteries.

Chloro-Functionalized Ether-Based Electrolyte for High-Voltage and Stable Potassium-Ion Batteries

Ether-based electrolyte is beneficial to obtaining good low-temperature performance and high ionic conductivity in potassium ion batteries. However, the dilute ether-based electrolytes usually result in ion-solvent co-intercalation of graphite, poor cycling stability, and hard to withstand high voltage cathodes above 4.0 V. To address the aforementioned issues, an electron-withdrawing group (chloro-substitution) was introduced to regulate the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) and enhance the oxidative stability of ether-based electrolytes. The dilute (~0.91 M) chloro-functionalized ether-based electrolyte not only facilitates the formation of homogeneous dual halides-based SEI, but also effectively suppress aluminum corrosion at high voltage. Using this functionalized electrolyte, the K||graphite cell exhibits a stability of 700 cycles, the K||Prussian blue (PB) cell (4.3 V) delivers a stability of 500 cycles, and the PB||graphite full-cell reveals a long stability of 6000 cycles with a high average Coulombic efficiency of 99.98 %. Additionally, the PB||graphite full-cell can operate under a wide temperature range from -5 °C to 45 °C. This work highlights the positive impact of electrolyte functionalization on the electrochemical performance, providing a bright future of ether-based electrolytes application for long-lasting, wide-temperature, and high Coulombic efficiency PIBs and beyond.

Alumina - Stabilized SEI and CEI in Potassium Metal Batteries

Aluminum oxide (Al2O3) nanopowder is spin-coated onto both sides of commercial polypropene separator to create artificial solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) and artificial cathode electrolyte interface (CEI) in potassium metal batteries (KMBs). This significantly enhances the stability, including of KMBs with Prussian Blue (PB) cathodes. For example, symmetric cells are stable after 1,000 cycles at 0.5 mA/cm2-0.5 mAh/cm2 and 3.0 mA/cm2-0.5 mAh/cm2. Alumina modified separators promote electrolyte wetting and increase ionic conductivity (0.59 vs. 0.2 mS/cm) and transference number (0.81 vs. 0.23). Cryo-stage focused ion beam (cryo-FIB) analysis of cycled modified anode demonstrates dense and planar electrodeposits, versus unmodified baseline consisting of metal filaments (dendrites) interspersed with pores and SEI. Alumina-modified CEI also suppresses elemental Fe crossover and reduces cathode cracking. Mesoscale modeling of metal - SEI interactions captures crucial role of intrinsic heterogeneities, illustrating how artificial SEI affects reaction current distribution, conductivity and morphological stability.

Unraveling the Nucleation and Growth Mechanism of Potassium Metal on 3D Skeletons for Dendrite-Free Potassium Metal Batteries

Designing three-dimensional (3D) porous carbonaceous skeletons for K metal is one of the most promising strategies to inhibit dendrite growth and enhance the cycle life of potassium metal batteries. However, the nucleation and growth mechanism of K metal on 3D skeletons remains ambiguous, and the rational design of suitable K hosts still presents a significant challenge. In this study, the relationships between the binding energy of skeletons toward K and the nucleation and growth of K are systematically studied. It is found that a high binding energy can effectively decrease the nucleation barrier, reduce nucleation volume, and prevent dendrite growth, which is applied to guide the design of 3D current collectors. Density functional theory calculations show that P-doped carbon (P-carbon) exhibits the highest binding energy toward K compared to other elements (e.g., N, O). As a result, the K@P-PMCFs (P-binding porous multichannel carbon nanofibers) symmetric cell demonstrates an excellent cycle stability of 2100 h with an overpotential of 85 mV in carbonate electrolytes. Similarly, the perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride || K@P-PMCFs cell achieves ultralong cycle stability (85% capacity retention after 1000 cycles). This work provides a valuable reference for the rational design of 3D current collectors.

Dendrite-Free and High-Rate Potassium Metal Batteries Sustained by an Inorganic-Rich SEI

Potassium metal battery is an appealing candidate for future energy storage. However, its application is plagued by the notorious dendrite proliferation at the anode side, which entails the formation of vulnerable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and non-uniform potassium deposition on the current collector. Here, this work reports a dual-modification design of aluminum current collector to render dendrite-free potassium anodes with favorable reversibility. This work achieves to modulate the electronic structure of the designed current collector and accordingly attain an SEI architecture with robust inorganic-rich constituents, which is evidenced by detailed cryo-EM inspection and X-ray depth profiling. The thus-produced SEI manages to expedite ionic conductivity and guide homogeneous potassium deposition. Compared to the potassium metal cells assembled using typical aluminum current collector, cells based on the designed current collector realize improved rate capability (maintaining 400 h under 50 mA cm-2 ) and low-temperature durability (stable operation at -50 °C). Moreover, scalable production of the current collector allows for the sustainable construction of high-safety potassium metal batteries, with the potential for reducing the manufacturing cost.

MXene-Derived Na+ -Pillared Vanadate Cathodes for Dendrite-Free Potassium Metal Batteries

Cation-intercalated vanadates, which have considerable promise as the cathode for high-performance potassium metal batteries (PMBs), suffer from structural collapse upon K+ insertion and desertion. Exotic cations in the vanadate cathode may ease the collapse, yet their effect on the intrinsic cation remains speculative. Herein, a stable and dendrite-free PMB, composed of a Na+ and K+ co-intercalated vanadate (NKVO) cathode and a liquid NaK alloy anode, is presented. A series of NKVO with tuneable Na/K ratios are facilely prepared using MXene precursors, in which Na+ is testified to be immobilized upon cycling, functioning as a structural pillar. Due to stronger ionic bonding and lower Fermi level of Na+ compared to K+ , moderate Na+ intercalation could reduce K+ binding to the solvation sheath and favor K+ diffusion kinetics. As a result, the MXene-derived Na+ -pillared NKVO exhibits markedly improved specific capacities, rate performance, and cycle stability than the Na+ -free counterpart. Moreover, thermally-treated carbon paper, which imitates the microscopic structure of Chinese Xuan paper, allows high surface tension liquid NaK alloy to adhere readily, enabling dendrite-free metal anodes. By clarifying the role of foreign intercalating cations, this study may lead to a more rational design of stable and high-performance electrode materials.

Suppressing metal corrosion through identification of optimal crystallographic plane for Zn batteries

Direct use of metals as battery anodes could significantly boost the energy density, but suffers from limited cycling. To make the batteries more sustainable, one strategy is mitigating the propensity for metals to form random morphology during plating through orientation regulation, e.g., hexagonal Zn platelets locked horizontally by epitaxial electrodeposition or vertically aligned through Zn/electrolyte interface modulation. Current strategies center around obtaining (002) faceted deposition due to its minimum surface energy. Here, benefiting from the capability of preparing a library of faceted monocrystalline Zn anodes and controlling the orientation of Zn platelet deposits, we challenge this conventional belief. We show that while monocrystalline (002) faceted Zn electrode with horizontal epitaxy indeed promises the highest critical current density, the (100) faceted electrode with vertically aligned deposits is the most important one in suppressing Zn metal corrosion and promising the best reversibility. Such uniqueness results from the lowest electrochemical surface area of (100) faceted electrode, which intrinsically builds upon the surface atom diffusion barrier and the orientation of the pallets. These new findings based on monocrystalline anodes advance the fundamental understanding of electrodeposition process for sustainable metal batteries and provide a paradigm to explore the processing-structure-property relationships of metal electrodes.

Efficient Polytelluride Anchoring for Ultralong-Life Potassium Storage: Combined Physical Barrier and Chemisorption in Nanogrid-in-Nanofiber

Metal tellurides (MTes) are highly attractive as promising anodes for high-performance potassium-ion batteries. The capacity attenuation of most reported MTe anodes is attributed to their poor electrical conductivity and large volume variation. The evolution mechanisms, dissolution properties, and corresponding manipulation strategies of intermediates (K-polytellurides, K-pTex) are rarely mentioned. Herein, we propose a novel structural engineering strategy to confine ultrafine CoTe2 nanodots in hierarchical nanogrid-in-nanofiber carbon substrates (CoTe2@NC@NSPCNFs) for smooth immobilization of K-pTex and highly reversible conversion of CoTe2 by manipulating the intense electrochemical reaction process. Various in situ/ex situ techniques and density functional theory calculations have been performed to clarify the formation, transformation, and dissolution of K-pTex (K5Te3 and K2Te), as well as verifying the robust physical barrier and the strong chemisorption of K5Te3 and K2Te on S, N co-doped dual-type carbon substrates. Additionally, the hierarchical nanogrid-in-nanofiber nanostructure increases the chemical anchoring sites for K-pTex, provides sufficient volume buffer space, and constructs highly interconnected conductive microcircuits, further propelling the battery reaction to new heights (3500 cycles at 2.0 A g-1). Furthermore, the full cells further demonstrate the potential for practical applications. This work provides new insights into manipulating K-pTex in the design of ultralong-cycling MTe anodes for advanced PIBs.

Cobalt/Nitrogen Co-Doped Carbon Materials Enhance the Reaction Rate of Sodium-Potassium Alloy Electrodes

Sodium-potassium (NaK) alloy electrodes are ideal for next-generation dendrite-free alkali metal electrodes due to their dendrite-free nature. However, issues such as slow diffusion kinetics due to the large K+ radius and the loss of active potassium during the reaction severely limit its application. Here a novel cobalt/nitrogen-doped carbon material is designed and it is applied to the construction of a NaK alloy electrode. The experimental and theoretical results indicate that the confining effect of the nitrogen-doped graphitic carbon layer can protect the cobalt nanoparticles from corrosion leaching, while the presence of Co─Nx bonds and cobalt nanoparticles provides more active sites for the reaction, realizing the synergistic effect of adsorption-catalytic modulation, lowering the K+ diffusion energy barrier and promoting charge transfer and ion diffusion. The application of this electrode to a symmetrical battery can achieve more than 1800 stable cycles under a current density of 0.4 mA cm-2 and a charge/discharge specific capacity of 122.64 mAh g-1 under a current of 0.5C in a full battery. This finding provides a new idea to realize a fast, stable, and efficient application of NaK alloy electrodes.

MXene-Based Mixed Conductor Interphase for Dendrite-Free Flexible Al Organic Battery

Al batteries are promising post-Li battery technologies for large-scale energy storage applications owing to their low cost and high theoretical capacity. However, one of the challenges that hinder their development is the unsatisfactory plating/stripping of the Al metal anode. To circumvent this issue, an ultrathin MXene layer is constructed on the surface of Al by in situ chemical reactions at room temperature. The as-prepared flexible MXene film acts like armor to protect the Al-metal by its high ionic conductivity and high mechanical flexibility. The MXene endow the Al anode with a long cyclic life of more than 5000 h at ultrahigh current density of 50 mA cm-2 for Al//Al batteries and a retention of 100% over 200 cycles for 355 Wh kg-1 PTO//Al batteries. This work provides fresh insights into the formation and regulation of stable electrode-electrolyte interfaces as well as effective strategies for improving Al metal batteries.

Dynamically Evolving Multifunctional Protective Layer for Highly Stable Potassium Metal Anodes

The construction of an artificial protective layer is an effective method to solve the issues, such as uncontrolled dendrite growth and an unstable solid electrolyte interphase, at the K metal anode. This study proposes a new dynamic evolution strategy that integrates the advantages of previous in situ and ex situ fabrication processes. A multifunctional protective layer enriched with K-Ge alloy is prepared on the K metal electrode by simple surface modification and in situ reduction via an electrochemical process. The protective layer has good potassiophilicity, mechanical flexibility, and high ionic conductivity, which can inhibit dendrite growth and reduce side reactions. The protected K electrode with a protective layer exhibits dendrite-free K plating/striping behavior, and the symmetric cell can run stably for over 1000 h at 1 mA cm-2 and 1 mAh cm-2. Notably, full cells based on this electrode also present excellent rate and cycling performance compared to those of the bare K electrode. This peculiar strategy will open a new avenue for metal anode protection and can be extended to other high-energy battery systems.

Oxygen vacancies in MnOx regulating reaction kinetics for aqueous zinc-ion batteries

MnO2 cathode materials have presented challenges due to their poor conductivity, unstable structure, and sluggish diffusion kinetics for aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). In this study, a nanostructured MnOx cathode material was synthesized using an acid etching method, Which introduced abundant Mn(III) sites, resulting in the formation of numerous oxygen vacancies. Comprehensive characterizations revealed that these oxygen vacancies facilitated the reversible adsorption/desorption of Zn2+ ions and promoted efficient electron transfer. In addition, the designed mesoporous structure offered ample active sites and shortened the diffusion path for Zn2+ and H+ ions. Consequently, the nanosized MnOx cathode exhibited enhanced reaction kinetics, achieving a considerable reversible specific capacity of 388.7 mAh/g at 0.1 A/g and superior durability with 72.0% capacity retention over 2000 cycles at 3.0 A/g. The material delivered a maximum energy density of 639.7 Wh kg-1 at 159.94 W kg-1. Furthermore, a systematic analysis of the zinc storage mechanism was performed. This work demonstrates that engineering oxygen vacancies with nanostructure regulation provides valuable insights into optimizing MnO2 cathode materials for AZIBs.

Ultrastable Dendrite-Free Potassium Metal Batteries Enabled by Weakly-Solvated Electrolyte

Potassium (K) metal is considered one of the most promising anodes for potassium metal batteries (PMBs) because of its abundant and low-cost advantages but suffers from serious dendritic growth and parasitic reactions, resulting in poor cyclability, low Coulombic efficiency (CE), and safety concerns. In this work, we report a localized high-concentration electrolyte (LHCE) consisting of potassium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (KFSI) in a cosolvent of 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME) and 1,1,2,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl-2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl ether (TTE) to solve the problems of PMBs. TTE as a diluent not only endows LHCE with advantages of low viscosity, good wettability, and improved conductivity but also solves the dendrite problem pertaining to K metal anodes. Using the formulation of LHCE, a CE of 98% during 800 cycles in the K||Cu cell and extremely stable cycling of over 2000 h in the K||K symmetric cell are achieved at a current density of 0.1 mA cm-2. In addition, the LHCE shows good compatibility with a Prussian Blue cathode, allowing almost 99% CE for the K||KFeIIFeIII(CN)6 full cell during 100 cycles. This promising electrolyte design realizes high-safety and energy-dense PMBs.

ZnS/SnS2 Heterostructures Encapsulated in N-Doped Carbon Nanofibers for High-Performance Alkali Metal-Ion Batteries

Heterogeneous composite ZnS/SnS2 is designed to meet various requirements for alkali metal-ion batteries. The composite is prepared using an electrostatic spinning method and encapsulated in N-doped carbon fibers after high-temperature vulcanization. The special structure of the composite provides a dependable interconnection and fast conductive network for alkali metal ions. The conductive carbon network shortens the diffusion path and greatly improves the migration efficiency of the alkali metal ions in the electrode. As expected, when the current density is 0.1 A g-1, the ZnS/SnS2@NCNFs maintain a high discharge capacity of more than 1437.5, 1321.2, and 861.6 mA h g-1 for lithium-ion, sodium-ion, and potassium-ion batteries, respectively. What is more, a full cell using a prelithiated composite anode and a LiFePO4 cathode is tested and shows excellent electrochemical performance. This work provides new perspectives for the development of novel anodes that can efficiently store alkali metal ions, as well as for the fine-structure design of materials.

Printable Energy Storage: Stay or Go?

In the era of rapidly evolving smart electronic devices, the development of power supplies with miniaturization and versatility is imperative. Prevailing manufacturing approaches for basic energy modules impose limitations on their size and shape design. Printing is an emerging technique to fabricate energy storage systems with tailorable mass loading and compelling energy output, benefiting from elaborate structural configurations and unobstructed charge transports. The derived "printable energy storage" realm is now focusing on materials exploration, ink formulation, and device construction. This contribution aims to illustrate the current state-of-the-art in printable energy storage and identify the existing challenges in the 3D printing design of electrodes. Insights into the future outlooks and directions for the development of this field are provided, with the goal of enabling printable energy storage toward practical applications.

A host potassiophilicity strategy for unprecedentedly stable and safe K metal batteries

Creating high-performance host materials for potassium (K) metal anodes remains a significant challenge due to the complex preparation process and poor K reversibility. In our work, we developed a potassiophilicity strategy using an oxygen-modified carbon cloth (O-CC) network as a host for K metal anodes. The O-CC network exhibited superior potassiophilic ability, and this improvement was also observed in other carbon hosts using the same process. The oxygen-induced epoxy group in the carbon network regulates interface electrons and enables strong binding of K adatoms through orbital hybridization, resulting in fewer side reactions with the electrolyte and promoting K-ion desolvation and uniform deposition. These factors result in unprecedented stability of the carbon network host, with a long lifespan of over 5500 hours at 0.5 mA cm-2/0.5 mA h cm-2 and 3500 h at 1 mA cm-2/0.5 mA h cm-2 in symmetric cells for K metal anodes, surpassing the cycle life of all previously reported K metal anodes. Furthermore, a high average coulombic efficiency of over 99.3% is demonstrated in O-CC//K cells during 210 cycles. The O-CC also exhibited a stable electrochemical performance, with a capacity retention of 73.3% in full cells coupled with a perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride cathode. We believe that this new strategy holds great promise for metal anodes in battery applications.

Construction of Synchronous-Deposition K Metal Anodes Via Modulation of Ion/Electron Transport Kinetics for High-Rate and Low-Temperature K Metal Batteries

The construction of conductive scaffolds is demonstrated to be an ideal strategy to alleviate the volume expansion and dendrite growth of K metal anodes. Nevertheless, the heterogeneous top-bottom deposition behavior caused by incompatible electronic/ionic conductivity of three-dimensional (3D) skeleton severely hinders its application. Here, a K2 Se/Cu conducting layer is fabricated on the Cu foam so as to enhance ionic transport and weaken electronic conductivity of the skeleton. Then, an excellent simultaneous deposition behavior of K metal inside the host is obtained for the first time via tuning fast ionic transport and low electronic conductivity. The simultaneous deposition mode can not only utilize the entire 3D structure to accommodate the volume expansion during K deposition but also avoid the formation of K dendrites at high current and ultra-low temperature. Consequently, the symmetric cells present a long cycle lifespan over 1000 h with a low deposition overpotential of 80 mV at 1 mA cm-2 . Furthermore, the full cell matching with the perylene-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) cathode presents an outstanding cycle lifespan over 600 cycles at 5 C at -20°C. The proposed simultaneous deposition strategy provides a new design direction for the construction of dendrite-free K metal anodes.

Space-Confined Guest Synthesis to Fabricate Sn-Monodispersed N-Doped Mesoporous Host toward Anode-Free Na Batteries

Severe issues including volume change and dendrite growth on sodium metal anodes hinder the pursuit of applicable high-energy-density sodium metal batteries. Herein, an in situ reaction approach is developed that takes metal-organic frameworks as nano-reactor and pore-former to produce a mesoporous host comprised of nitrogen-doped carbon fibers embedded with monodispersed Sn clusters (SnNCNFs). The hybrid host shows outstanding sodiophilicity that enables rapid Na infusion and ultralow Na nucleation overpotential of 2 mV. Its porous structure holds a high Na content and guides uniform Na deposition. Such host provides favorable Na plating/stripping with an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.96% over 2000 cycles (at 3 mA cm-2 and 3 mA h cm-2 ). The Na-infused SnNCNF anode delivers extreme Na utilization of 86% in symmetric cells (at 10 mA cm-2 and 10 mA h cm-2 ), outstanding rate capability and cycle life in Na-SnNCNF||Na3 V2 (PO4 )3 full cells (at 1 A g-1 for over 1000 cycles with capacity retention of 92.1%). Furthermore, high-energy/power-density anode-less and anode-free Na cells are achieved. This work presents an effective heteroatom-doping approach for fabricating multifunctional porous carbon materials and developing high-performance metal batteries.

Functional materials contributing to the removal of chlorinated hydrocarbons from soil and groundwater: Classification and intrinsic chemical-biological removal mechanisms

Chlorinated hydrocarbons (CHs) are the main contaminants in soil and groundwater and have posed great challenge on the remediation of soil and ground water. Different remediation materials have been developed to deal with the environmental problems caused by CHs. Remediation materials can be classified into three main categories according to the corresponding technologies: adsorption materials, chemical reduction materials and bioaugmentation materials. In this paper, the classification and preparation of the three materials are briefly described in terms of synthesis and properties according to the different types. Then, a detailed review of the remediation mechanisms and applications of the different materials in soil and groundwater remediation is presented in relation to the various properties of the materials and the different challenges encountered in laboratory research or in the environmental application. The removal trends in different environments were found to be largely similar, which means that composite materials tend to be more effective in removing CHs in actual remediation. For instance, adsorbents were found to be effective when combined with other materials, due to the ability to take advantage of the respective strengths of both materials. The rapid removal of CHs while minimizing the impact of CHs on another material and the material itself on the environment. Finally, suggestions for the next research directions are given in conjunction with this paper.

Nucleophilic deposition behavior of metal anodes

Nucleophilic materials play important roles in the deposition behavior of high-energy-density metal batteries (Li, Na, K, Zn, and Ca), while the principle and determination method of nucleophilicity are lacking. In this review, we summarize the metal extraction/deposition process to find out the mechanism of nucleophilic deposition behavior. The key points of the most critical nucleophilic behavior were found by combining the potential change, thermodynamic analysis, and active metal deposition behavior. On this basis, the inductivity and affinity of the material have been determined by Gibbs free energy directly. Thus, the inducibility of most materials has been classified: (a) induced nuclei can reduce the overpotential of active metals; (b) not all materials can induce active metal deposition; (c) the induced reaction is not changeless. Based on these results, the influencing factors (temperature, mass, phase state, induced reaction product, and alloying reactions) were also taken into account during the choice of inducers for active metal deposition. Finally, the critical issues, challenges, and perspectives for further development of high-utilization metal electrodes were considered comprehensively.

Building electrode skins for ultra-stable potassium metal batteries

In nature, the human body is a perfect self-organizing and self-repairing system, with the skin protecting the internal organs and tissues from external damages. In this work, inspired by the human skin, we design a metal electrode skin (MES) to protect the metal interface. MES can increase the flatness of electrode and uniform the electric field distribution, inhibiting the growth of dendrites. In detail, an artificial film made of fluorinated graphene oxide serves as the first protection layer. At molecular level, fluorine is released and in-situ formed a robust SEI as the second protection "skin" for metal anode. As a result, Cu@MES | | K asymmetric cell is able to achieve an unprecedented cycle life (over 1600 cycles). More impressively, the full cell of K@MES | | Prussian blue exhibits a long cycle lifespan over 5000 cycles. This work illustrates a mechanism for metal electrode protection and provides a strategy for the applying bionics in batteries.

Bifunctional Alloy/Solid-Electrolyte Interphase Layer for Enhanced Potassium Metal Batteries Via Prepassivation

Potassium (K) metal batteries have attracted great attention owing to their low price, widespread distribution, and comparable energy density. However, the arbitrary dendrite growth and side reactions of K metal are attributed to high environmental sensitivity, which is the Achilles' heel of its commercial development. Interface engineering between the current collector and K metal can tailor the surface properties for K-ion flux accommodation, dendrite growth inhibition, parasitic reaction suppression, etc. We have designed bifunctional layers via prepassivation, which can be recognized as an O/F-rich Sn-K alloy and a preformed solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer. This Sn-K alloy with high substrate-related binding energy and Fermi level demonstrates strong potassiophilicity to homogeneously guide K metal deposition. Simultaneously, the preformed SEI layer can effectually eliminate side reactions initially, which is beneficial for the spatially and temporally KF-rich SEI layer on K metal. K metal deposition and protection can be implemented by the bifunctional layers, delivering great performance with a low nucleation overpotential of 0.066 V, a high average Coulombic efficiency of 99.1%, and durable stability of more than 900 h (1 mA cm-2, 1 mAh cm-2). Furthermore, the high-voltage platform, energy, and power densities of K metal batteries can be realized with a conventional Prussian blue analogue cathode. This work provides a paradigm to passivate fragile interfaces for alkali metal anodes.
