The Geometry and Nature of C─I···O─N Interactions in Perfluoroiodobenzene-Pyridine N-oxide Halogen-Bonded Complexes

The N─Oxide oxygen in the 111 C─I···⁻O─N+ halogen bond (XB) complexes, formed by five perfluoroiodobenzene XB donors and 32 pyridine N-oxides (PyNO) XB acceptors, exhibits three XB modes: bidentate, tridentate, and monodentate. Their C─I···O XB angles range from 148° to 180°, reflecting the iodine σ-hole's structure-guiding influence. The I···⁻O─N+ angles range from 87° to 152°. On the contrary, the I···⁻O─N+ angles have a narrower range from 107° to 125° in stronger monodentate N─I···⁻O─N+ XBs of N-iodoimides and PyNOs. The C─I···⁻O─N+ systems exhibit a larger variation in I···⁻O─N+ angles due to weaker XB donor perfluoroiodoaromatics forming weak I···O XBs, which allows wider access to electron-rich N-O group regions. Density Functional Theory analysis shows that I···O interactions are attractive even when the I···⁻O─N+ angle is ≈80°. Correlation analysis of structural parameters showed that weak I···O XBs in perfluoroiodobenzene-PyNO complexes affect the C─I bond via n(O)→σ*(C─I) donation less than the N─I bond via n(O)→σ*(N─I) donation in very strong I···O XBs of N-iodoimide-PyNO complexes. This implies that PyNOs' oxygen self-tunes its XB acceptor property, dependent on the XB donor σ-hole strength affecting the bonding denticity, geometry, and interaction energies.

A Processible and Ultrahigh-temperature Organic Photothermal Material through Spontaneous and Quantitative [2+2] Cycloaddition-Cycloreversion

Energy conversion, particularly light to heat conversion, has garnered significant attention owing to its prospect in renewable energy exploitation and utilization. Most previous efforts have focused on developing organic photothermal materials for low-temperature applications, whereas the importance of simplifying the preparation methods of photothermal materials and enhancing their maximum photothermal temperature have been less taken. Herein, we prepare an organic near-infrared (NIR) photothermal material namely ATT by a spontaneous [2+2] cycloaddition-cycloreversion reaction. In addition to the solution-based method, ATT could also be readily preapred by ball milling in a high yield of 90 % in just 15 min. ATT powder exhibits a broad absorption extending beyond 2000 nm, excellent processability, and thermal stability. Remarkably, ATT powder can reach an unprecedently temperature as high as 450 °C while maintaining excellent photostability upon photoirradiation. Leveraging its extraordinary photothermal and processable properties, ATT was used in the high-temperature applications, such as photo-ignition, photo-controlled metal processing and high-temperature shape memory, all of which offer spatiotemporal control capabilities. This work provides a new approach to prepare organic photothermal materials with high temperatures, and pave the way for their applications in extreme environments.

Recent advances in shape memory polymeric nanocomposites for biomedical applications and beyond

Shape memory polymers (SMPs), which initiate shape transformation in response to environmental stimuli, have attracted significant attention in both academic research and technological innovation. The combination of functional nanomaterials and SMPs has led to the emergence of a variety of shape memory polymeric nanocomposites (SMPNs) with multifunctional properties. This has injected new vitality and vigor into fields such as tissue engineering, biomedicine, optical sensing, aerospace and mechanical engineering. In this review article, we present a brief introduction to the fundamentals of SMPs and SMPNs, followed by a discussion of the recent advances in their multifunctional applications in biomedical manufacturing, drug delivery devices, mechanical sensing, micro-engines, etc. The opportunities and challenges in the future development of SMPs are also discussed.

The effect of Pluronic P123 on shape memory of cross-linked polyurethane/poly(l-lactide) biocomposite

Polyurethane (PU) and poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) have attracted increasing attention in the development of shape memory polymers (SMPs) due to their good biocompatibility and degradability. Although Pluronic P123 can be used to tune polymeric surface hydrophilicity, its effect on SM performance is a mystery. In this study, a soluble cross-linked PU is synthesized as the switching phase and combined with PLLA and P123 to construct a hydrothermally responsive SM composite. The water contact angle of PU/PLLA/P123 decreases from 22.7° to 5.1° within 2 min. PU and P123 form the switching group, which enhances the SM behavior of the composite. The shape fixity (Rf) and shape recovery (Rr) of PU/PLLA/P123 are 94.4 % and 98 % in 55 °C water, respectively, and the shape recovery time is only 10 s. P123 plays the role of "turbine" in the SM process. PU/PLLA/P123 exhibits a balance between stiffness and elasticity, and good degradability. Furthermore, PU/PLLA/P123 is also biocompatible and beneficial to cell proliferation and growth. Therefore, it offers an alternative approach to developing hydrothermally responsive SM biocomposites based on P123, PU and PLLA for biomedical applications.

Multifunctionality of Iodinated Halogen-Bonded Polymer: Biodegradability, Radiopacity, Elasticity, Ductility, and Self-Healing Ability

A polymer with high contents of ester bonds and iodine atoms was synthesized, exhibiting sufficient biodegradability and radioactivity for biomedical applications. The iodine moieties of the synthesized polyester can generate halogen bonding between molecules, which may develop additional functional properties through the bonding. In this study, poly(glycerol adipate) (PGA) was selected and synthesized as a polyester, which was then adequately conjugated with three different types of iodine compounds via the hydroxy groups of PGA. It was found that the iodine compounds could effectively work as donors of halogen bonding. The thermal analysis by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) revealed that the glass transition temperature increased with the increase in the strength of interactions caused by π-π stacking and halogen bonding, eventually reaching 49.6 °C for PGA with triiodobenzoic groups. An elastomeric PGA with monoiodobenzoic groups was also obtained, exhibiting a high self-healing ability at room temperature because of the reconstruction of halogen bonding. Such multifaceted performance of the synthesized polyester with controllable thermal/mechanical properties was realized by halogen bonding, leading to a promising biomaterial with multifunctionality.

Elucidating mechanochemical reactivity of a ternary halogen-bonded cocrystal system by computational and calorimetric studies

Discovery of a halogen-bonded ternary cocrystal of 1,3,5-trifluoro-2,4,6-triiodobenzene with pyrazine and triphenylphosphine sulfide has revealed a complex landscape of multicomponent phases, all achievable by mechanochemical interconversion. The observed solid-state reaction pathways were explained by periodic density-functional calculations and comprehensive intermolecular interaction analysis, supported by dissolution calorimetry measurements.

Electrically active smart adhesive for a perching-and-takeoff robot

Perching-and-takeoff robot can effectively economize onboard power and achieve long endurance. However, dynamic perching on moving targets for a perching-and-takeoff robot is still challenging due to less autonomy to dynamically land, tremendous impact during landing, and weak contact adaptability to perching surfaces. Here, a self-sensing, impact-resistant, and contact-adaptable perching-and-takeoff robot based on all-in-one electrically active smart adhesives is proposed to reversibly perch on moving/static dry/wet surfaces and economize onboard energy. Thereinto, attachment structures with discrete pillars have contact adaptability on different dry/wet surfaces, stable adhesion, and anti-rebound; sandwich-like artificial muscles lower weight, enhance damping, simplify control, and achieve fast adhesion switching (on-off ratio approaching ∞ in several seconds); and the flexible pressure (0.204% per kilopascal)-and-deformation (force resolution, <2.5 millinewton) sensor enables the robot's autonomy. Thus, the perching-and-takeoff robot equipped with electrically active smart adhesives exhibits tremendous advantages of soft materials over their rigid counterparts and promising application prospect of dynamic perching on moving targets.

Programmable and Self-Healable Liquid Crystal Elastomer Actuators Based on Halogen Bonding

Shape-changing polymeric materials have gained significant attention in the field of bioinspired soft robotics. However, challenges remain in versatilizing the shape-morphing process to suit different tasks and environments, and in designing systems that combine reversible actuation and self-healing ability. Here, we report halogen-bonded liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) that can be arbitrarily shape-programmed and that self-heal under mild thermal or photothermal stimulation. We incorporate halogen-bond-donating diiodotetrafluorobenzene molecules as dynamic supramolecular crosslinks into the LCEs and show that these relatively weak crosslinks are pertinent for their mechanical programming and self-healing. Utilizing the halogen-bonded LCEs, we demonstrate proof-of-concept soft robotic motions such as crawling and rolling with programmed velocities. Our results showcase halogen bonding as a promising, yet unexplored tool for the preparation of smart supramolecular constructs for the development of advanced soft actuators.

Asymmetric Trihalogenated Aromatic Lithium Salt Induced Lithium Halide Rich Interface for Stable Cycling of All-Solid-State Lithium Batteries

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are the key components for all-solid-state lithium metal batteries with high energy density and intrinsic safety. However, the low lithium ion transference number (t+) of a conventional SPE and its unstable electrolyte/electrode interface cannot guarantee long-term stable operation. Herein, asymmetric trihalogenated aromatic lithium salts, i.e., lithium (3,4,5-trifluorobenzenesulfonyl)(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiFFF) and lithium (4-bromo-3,5-difluorobenzenesulfonyl)(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiFBF), are synthesized for polymer electrolytes. They exhibit higher t+ values and better compatibility with Li metal than conventional lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide (LiTFSI). Due to the trihalogenated aromatic anions, LiFFF- and LiFBF-based electrolytes are prone to generate an LiF- and LiBr-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), therefore increasing the stability of the solid electrolyte/anode interface. Particularly, LiFBF could induce a LiF/LiBr hybrid SEI, where LiF shows a high Young's modulus and high surface energy for homogenizing Li ion flux and LiBr exhibits an extremely low Li ion diffusion barrier in the SEI layer. As a result, the Li/Li symmetric cells could remain stable for more than 1200 h without a short circuit and the LiFePO4/Li batteries showed superb electrochemical performance over 1200 cycles at 1 C. This work provides valuable insights from the perspective of lithium salt molecular structures for high-performance all-solid-state lithium metal batteries.

Permanent Shape Reconfiguration and Locally Reversible Actuation of a Carbon Nanotube/Ethylene Vinyl Acetate Copolymer Composite by Constructing a Dynamic Cross-Linked Network

Given the rapid developments in modern devices, there is an urgent need for shape-memory polymer composites (SMPCs) in soft robots and other fields. However, it remains a challenge to endow SMPCs with both a reconfigurable permanent shape and a locally reversible shape transformation. Herein, a dynamic cross-linked network was facilely constructed in carbon nanotube/ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (CNT/EVA) composites by designing the molecular structure of EVA. The CNT/EVA composite with 0.05 wt % CNT realized a steady-state temperature of ∼75 °C under 0.11 W/cm2 light intensity, which gave rise to remote actuation behavior. The dynamic cross-linked network along with a wide melting temperature offered opportunities for chemical and physical programming, thus realizing the achievement of the programmable three-dimensional (3D) structure and locally reversible actuation. Specifically, the CNT/EVA composite exhibited a superior permanent shape reconfiguration by activating the dynamic cross-linked network at 140 °C. The composite also showed a high reversible deformation rate of 11.1%. These features endowed the composites with the capability of transformation to 3D structure as well as locally reversible actuation performance. This work provides an attractive guideline for the future design of SMPCs with sophisticated structures and actuation capability.

Iodine(I) and Silver(I) Complexes Incorporating 3-Substituted Pyridines

Building upon the first report of a 3-acetaminopyridine-based iodine(I) complex (1b) and its unexpected reactivity toward ^tBuOMe, several new 3-substituted iodine(I) complexes (2b-5b) have been synthesized. The iodine(I) complexes were synthesized from their analogous silver(I) complexes (2a-5a) via a silver(I) to iodine(I) cation exchange reaction, incorporating functionally related substituents as 3-acetaminopyridine in 1b; 3-acetylpyridine (3-Acpy; 2), 3-aminopyridine (3-NH₂py; 3), and 3-dimethylaminopyridine (3-NMe₂py; 4), as well as the strongly electron-withdrawing 3-cyanopyridine (3-CNpy; 5), to probe the possible limitations of iodine(I) complex formation. The individual properties of these rare examples of iodine(I) complexes incorporating 3-substituted pyridines are also compared to each other and contrasted to their 4-substituted counterparts which are more prevalent in the literature. While the reactivity of 1b toward etheric solvents could not be reproduced in any of the functionally related analogues synthesized herein, the reactivity of 1b was further expanded to a second etheric solvent. Reaction of bis(3-acetaminopyridine)iodine(I) (1b) and ⁱPr₂O gave [3-acetamido-1-(3-iodo-2-methylpentan-2-yl)pyridin-1-ium]PF₆ (1d), which demonstrated potentially useful C-C and C-I bond formation under ambient conditions.

Halogen Bonding Channels for Magnetic Exchange in Cu(II) Complexes with 2,5-Di(methylthio)-1,3,4-thiadiazole

Copper(II) complexes with 2,5-bis(methylthio)-1,3,4-thiadiazole (tda) formulated as [Cu(tda)_n X₂ ] (n=2, X=Cl^- , Br^- , C₂ N₃ ^- ; n= 1, X=C₂ N₃ ^- ) have been isolated and fully characterized. The crystal structures of all compounds have been determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD). A study of the magnetic susceptibility in the range 1.77-300 K has shown that magnetic properties of the [Cu(tda)₂ Cl₂ ] and [Cu(tda)₂ Br₂ ] complexes match those of 1D chains of antiferromagnetically-coupled Cu²⁺ ions. The intrachain interaction J in [Cu(tda)₂ Cl₂ ] turns out to be ∼1.2 times weaker than in its bromide analogue. In its turn, [Cu(tda)₂ (C₂ N₃ )₂ ] exhibits J being an order of magnitude smaller and of the opposite ferromagnetic sign. Halogen bonding (HB) between adjacent complexes is much stronger than the H-bonds or π-π interactions between tda ligands according to the DFT calculations.
