Iridium oxide nanoribbons with metastable monoclinic phase for highly efficient electrocatalytic oxygen evolution

Boron-Induced Interstitial Effects Drive Water Oxidation on Ordered Ir-B Compounds

Interstitial filling of light atoms strongly affects the electronic structure and adsorption properties of the parent catalyst due to ligand and ensemble effects. Different from the conventional doping and surface modification, constructing ordered intermetallic structures is more promising to overcome the dissolution and reconstruction of active sites through strong interactions generated by atomic periodic arrangement, achieving joint improvement in catalytic activity and stability. However, for tightly arranged metal lattices, such as iridium (Ir), obtaining ordered filling atoms and further unveiling their interstitial effects are still limited by highly activated processes. Herein, we report a high-temperature molten salt assisted strategy to form the intermetallic Ir-B compounds (IrB1.1) with ordered filling by light boron (B) atoms. The B residing in the interstitial lattice of Ir constitutes favorable adsorption surfaces through a donor-acceptor architecture, which has an optimal free energy uphill in rate-determining step (RDS) of oxygen evolution reaction (OER), resulting in enhanced activity. Meanwhile, the strong coupling of Ir-B structural units suppresses the demetallation and reconstruction behavior of Ir, ensuring catalytic stability. Such B-induced interstitial effects endow IrB1.1 with higher OER performance than commercial IrO2, which is further validated in proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWEs).

Acidic Oxygen Evolution Reaction: Fundamental Understanding and Electrocatalysts Design

Water electrolysis driven by "green electricity" is an ideal technology to realize energy conversion and store renewable energy into hydrogen. With the development of proton exchange membrane (PEM), water electrolysis in acidic media suitable for many situations with an outstanding advantage of high gas purity has attracted significant attention. Compared with hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in water electrolysis, oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a kinetic sluggish process that needs a higher overpotential. Especially in acidic media, OER process poses higher requirements for the electrocatalysts, such as high efficiency, high stability and low costs. This review focuses on the acidic OER electrocatalysis, reaction mechanisms, and critical parameters used to evaluate performance. Especially the modification strategies applied in the design and construction of new-type electrocatalysts are also summarized. The characteristics of traditional noble metal-based electrocatalysts and the noble metal-free electrocatalysts developed in recent decades are compared and discussed. Finally, the current challenges for the most promising acidic OER electrocatalysts are presented, together with a perspective for future water electrolysis.

Optimal Electrocatalyst Design Strategies for Acidic Oxygen Evolution

Hydrogen, a clean resource with high energy density, is one of the most promising alternatives to fossil. Proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers are beneficial for hydrogen production because of their high current density, facile operation, and high gas purity. However, the large-scale application of electrochemical water splitting to acidic electrolytes is severely limited by the sluggish kinetics of the anodic reaction and the inadequate development of corrosion- and highly oxidation-resistant anode catalysts. Therefore, anode catalysts with excellent performance and long-term durability must be developed for anodic oxygen evolution reactions (OER) in acidic media. This review comprehensively outlines three commonly employed strategies, namely, defect, phase, and structure engineering, to address the challenges within the acidic OER, while also identifying their existing limitations. Accordingly, the correlation between material design strategies and catalytic performance is discussed in terms of their contribution to high activity and long-term stability. In addition, various nanostructures that can effectively enhance the catalyst performance at the mesoscale are summarized from the perspective of engineering technology, thus providing suitable strategies for catalyst design that satisfy industrial requirements. Finally, the challenges and future outlook in the area of acidic OER are presented.

Built-in electric field control of electron redistribution (NiFe-based electrocatalyst) with efficient overall water splitting at industrial temperature

Nickel-iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) is hindered in its further development in water splitting due to its slow kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this study, the synthesis of OER (FeO(OH)/NiFe-LDH) and HER (Fe7S8(NiS)/NiFe-LDH) catalysts endowed with inherent electric fields exhibited exceptional electrocatalytic properties. The presence of the built-in electric field modulated the redistribution of electrons within the catalyst, while the formation of a heterostructure preserved the intrinsic characteristics of the catalyst. Moreover, this electron redistribution optimized the catalyst's adsorption of reaction intermediates (O*, OH*, OOH*, and H*) during the catalytic process, thereby enhancing the performance of both OER and HER. The electrolytic cell, equipped with these catalysts, achieved the current density of 10 mA cm-2 at a remarkably low potential of 1.409 V under industrial temperature conditions and demonstrated an ultra-long-term stability of 200 h.

Understanding the catalytic performances of metal-doped Ta2O5 catalysts for acidic oxygen evolution reaction with computations

The design of stable and active alternative catalysts to iridium oxide for the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has been a long pursuit in acidic water splitting. Tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) has the merit of great acidic stability but poor OER performance, yet strategies to improve its intrinsic OER activity are highly desirable. Herein, by using density functional theory (DFT) calculations combined with aqueous stability assessment from surface Pourbaix diagrams, we systematically evaluated the OER activity and acidic stability of 14 different metal-doped Ta2O5 catalysts. Apart from the experimentally reported Ir-doped Ta2O5, we computationally identified Ru- and Nb-doped Ta2O5 catalysts as another two candidates with reasonably high stability and activity in acidic OER. Our study also underscores the essence of considering stable surface states of catalysts under working conditions before a reasonable activity trend can be computationally achieved.

Strain-Triggered Distinct Oxygen Evolution Reaction Pathway in Two-Dimensional Metastable Phase IrO2 via CeO2 Loading

A strain engineering strategy is crucial for designing a high-performance catalyst. However, how to control the strain in metastable phase two-dimensional (2D) materials is technically challenging due to their nanoscale sizes. Here, we report that cerium dioxide (CeO2) is an ideal loading material for tuning the in-plane strain in 2D metastable 1T-phase IrO2 (1T-IrO2) via an in situ growth method. Surprisingly, 5% CeO2 loaded 1T-IrO2 with 8% compressive strain achieves an overpotential of 194 mV at 10 mA cm-2 in a three-electrode system. It also retained a high current density of 900 mA cm-2 at a cell voltage of 1.8 V for a 400 h stability test in the proton-exchange membrane device. More importantly, the Fourier transform infrared measurements and density functional theory calculation reveal that the CeO2 induced strained 1T-IrO2 directly undergo the *O-*O radical coupling mechanism for O2 generation, totally different from the traditional adsorbate evolution mechanism in pure 1T-IrO2. These findings illustrate the important role of strain engineering in paving up an optimal catalytic pathway in order to achieve robust electrochemical performance.

Recent Advances in Iridium-based Electrocatalysts for Acidic Electrolyte Oxidation

Ongoing research to develop advanced electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is needed to address demand for efficient energy conversion and carbon-free energy sources. In the OER process, acidic electrolytes have higher proton concentration and faster response than alkaline ones, but their harsh strongly acidic environment requires catalysts with greater corrosion and oxidation resistance. At present, iridium oxide (IrO2) with its strong stability and excellent catalytic performance is the catalyst of choice for the anode side of commercial PEM electrolysis cells. However, the scarcity and high cost of iridium (Ir) and the unsatisfactory activity of IrO2 hinder industrial scale application and the sustainable development of acidic OER catalytic technology. This highlights the importance of further research on acidic Ir-based OER catalysts. In this review, recent advances in Ir-based acidic OER electrocatalysts are summarized, including fundamental understanding of the acidic OER mechanism, recent insights into the stability of acidic OER catalysts, highly efficient Ir-based electrocatalysts, and common strategies for optimizing Ir-based catalysts. The future challenges and prospects of developing highly effective Ir-based catalysts are also discussed.

Tailoring hypervalent Nickel induced by oxygen vacancy toward enhanced oxygen evolution reaction performance in self-supporting NiFe-(oxy)hydroxides electrodes

NiFe-(oxy)hydroxides are the most active transition metal oxide electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) under the alkaline media. Herein, we controllably manipulated oxygen vacancy (VO)-tunable NiFe-(oxy) hydroxides that their OER performances possessed a volcano-type relationship with VO concentration, positively-correlated with Ni3+/Ni2+ ratio. Theoretical simulations further unearthed the enhanced activation and dissociation of H2O by the inserting of VO. As a result, the optimal sample featuring the Ni3+/Ni2+ ratio of 30.3 % and VO of 23.8 % exhibited the overpotential of 243 mV at the current density of 100 mA cm-2, simultaneously lasting 120 h durability without any attenuation, exceding the most reported NiFe-(oxy)hydroxides. This work offers an innovative view to understand the OER performance using hypervalent Ni ratio induced by VO defects.

Stabilizing atomic Ru species in conjugated sp2 carbon-linked covalent organic framework for acidic water oxidation

Suppressing the kinetically favorable lattice oxygen oxidation mechanism pathway and triggering the adsorbate evolution mechanism pathway at the expense of activity are the state-of-the-art strategies for Ru-based electrocatalysts toward acidic water oxidation. Herein, atomically dispersed Ru species are anchored into an acidic stable vinyl-linked 2D covalent organic framework with unique crossed π-conjugation, termed as COF-205-Ru. The crossed π-conjugated structure of COF-205-Ru not only suppresses the dissolution of Ru through strong Ru-N motifs, but also reduces the oxidation state of Ru by multiple π-conjugations, thereby activating the oxygen coordinated to Ru and stabilizing the oxygen vacancies during oxygen evolution process. Experimental results including X-ray absorption spectroscopy, in situ Raman spectroscopy, in situ powder X-ray diffraction patterns, and theoretical calculations unveil the activated oxygen with elevated energy level of O 2p band, decreased oxygen vacancy formation energy, promoted electrochemical stability, and significantly reduced energy barrier of potential determining step for acidic water oxidation. Consequently, the obtained COF-205-Ru displays a high mass activity with 2659.3 A g-1, which is 32-fold higher than the commercial RuO2, and retains long-term durability of over 280 h. This work provides a strategy to simultaneously promote the stability and activity of Ru-based catalysts for acidic water oxidation.

The mechanism of water oxidation using transition metal-based heterogeneous electrocatalysts

The water oxidation reaction, a crucial process for solar energy conversion, has garnered significant research attention. Achieving efficient energy conversion requires the development of cost-effective and durable water oxidation catalysts. To design effective catalysts, it is essential to have a fundamental understanding of the reaction mechanisms. This review presents a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in the understanding of the mechanisms of water oxidation using transition metal-based heterogeneous electrocatalysts, including Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu-based catalysts. It highlights the catalytic mechanisms of different transition metals and emphasizes the importance of monitoring of key intermediates to explore the reaction pathway. In addition, advanced techniques for physical characterization of water oxidation intermediates are also introduced, for the purpose of providing information for establishing reliable methodologies in water oxidation research. The study of transition metal-based water oxidation electrocatalysts is instrumental in providing novel insights into understanding both natural and artificial energy conversion processes.

Intercalated and Surface-Adsorbed Phosphate Anions in NiFe Layered Double-Hydroxide Catalysts Synergistically Enhancing Oxygen Evolution Reaction Activity

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER), a crucial semireaction in water electrolysis and rechargeable metal-air batteries, is vital for carbon neutrality. Hindered by a slow proton-coupled electron transfer, an efficient catalyst activating the formation of an O-H bond is essential. Here, we proposed a straightforward one-step hydrothermal procedure for fabricating PO43--modified NiFe layered double-hydroxide (NiFe LDH) catalysts and investigated the role of PO43- anions in enhancing OER. Phosphate amounts can efficiently regulate LDH morphology, crystallinity, composition, and electronic configuration. The optimized sample showed a low overpotential of 267 mV at 10 mA cm-2. Density functional theory calculations revealed that intercalated and surface-adsorbed PO43- anions in NiFe LDH reduced the Gibbs free energy in the rate-determining step of *OOH formation, balancing oxygen-containing intermediate adsorption/dissociation and promoting the OER. Intercalated phosphate ions accelerated precatalyst dehydrogenation kinetics, leading to a rapid reconstruction into active NiFe oxyhydroxide species. Surface-adsorbed PO43- interacted favorably with adsorbed *OOH on the active Ni sites, stabilizing *OOH. Overall, the synergistic effects of intercalated and surface-adsorbed PO43- anions significantly contributed to enhanced OER activity. Achieving optimal catalytic activity requires a delicate equilibrium between thermodynamic and kinetic factors by meticulously regulating the quantity of introduced PO43- ions. This endeavor will facilitate a deeper comprehension of the influence of anions in electrocatalysis for OER.

Regulating Ir-O Covalency to Boost Acidic Oxygen Evolution Reaction

The unsatisfactory oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity of IrO2 has intensively raised the cost and energy consumption of hydrogen generation from proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers. Here, the acidic OER activity of the rutile IrO2 is significantly enhanced by the incorporation of trivalent metals (e.g., Gd, Nd, and Pr) to increase the Ir-O covalency, while the high-valence (pentavalent or higher) metal incorporation decreases the Ir-O covalency resulting in worse OER activity. Experimental and theoretical analyses indicate that enhanced Ir-O covalency activates lattice oxygen and triggers lattice oxygen-mediated mechanism to enhance OER kinetics, which is verified by the finding of a linear relationship between the natural logarithm of intrinsic activity and Ir-O covalency described by charge transfer energy. By regulating the Ir-O covalency, the obtained Gd-IrO2-δ merely needs 260 mV of overpotential to reach 10 mA cm-2 and shows impressive stability during a 200-h test in 0.5 м H2SO4. This work provides an effective strategy for significantly enhancing the OER activity of the widely used IrO2 electrocatalysts through the rational regulation of Ir-O covalency.

Optimizing Edge Active Sites via Intrinsic In-Plane Iridium Deficiency in Layered Iridium Oxides for Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalysis

Improving catalytic activity of surface iridium sites without compromising catalytic stability is the core task of designing more efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acid. This work presents phase transition of a bulk layered iridate Na2IrO3 in acid solution at room temperature, and subsequent exfoliation to produce 2D iridium oxide nanosheets with around 4 nm thickness. The nanosheets consist of OH-terminated, honeycomb-type layers of edge-sharing IrO6 octahedral framework with intrinsic in-plane iridium deficiency. The nanosheet material is among the most active Ir-based catalysts reported for acidic OER and gives an iridium mass activity improvement up to a factor of 16.5 over rutile IrO2 nanoparticles. The material also exhibits good catalytic and structural stability and retains the catalytic activity for more than 1300 h. The combined experimental and theoretical results demonstrate that edge Ir sites of the layer are active centers for OER, with structural hydroxyl groups participating in the catalytic cycle of OER via a non-traditional adsorbate evolution mechanism. The existence of intrinsic in-plane iridium deficiency is the key to building a unique local environment of edge active sites that have optimal surface oxygen adsorption properties and thereby high catalytic activity.

Emerging two dimensional metastable-phase oxides: insights and prospects in synthesis and catalysis

Since the discovery of graphene, the development of new two-dimensional (2D) materials has received considerable interest. Recently, as a newly emerging member of the 2D family, 2D metastable-phase oxides that combine the unique advantages of metal oxides, 2D structures, and metastable-phase materials have shown enormous potential in various catalytic reactions. In this review, the potential of various 2D materials to form a metastable-phase is predicted. The advantages of 2D metastable-phase oxides for advanced applications, reliable methods of synthesizing 2D metastable-phase oxides, and the application of these oxides in different catalytic reactions are presented. Finally, the challenges associated with 2D metastable-phase oxides and future perspectives are discussed.

Core-Shell Design of Metastable Phase Catalyst Enables Highly-Performance Selective Hydrogenation

Highly selective semihydrogenation of alkynes to alkenes is a highly important reaction for catalytic industry. Developing non-noble metal based catalysts with platinum group metal-like activity and selectivity is extremely crucial yet challenging. Metastable phase catalysts provide a potential candidate to realize high activity, yet the control of selectivity remains an open question. Here, this work first reports a metastable phase core-shell: face-centered cubic (fcc) phase Ag (10 at%) core-metastable hexagonal closest packed (hcp) phase Ni (90 at%) shell catalyst, which represents high conversion rate, high selectivity, and remarkable universality for the semihydrogenation of phenylacetylene and its derivatives. More impressively, a turnover frequency (TOF) value of 8241.8 h-1 is achieved, much higher than those of stable phase catalysts and reported platinum group metal based catalysts. Mechanistic investigation reveals that the surface of hcp Ni becomes more oxidized due to electron transfer from hcp Ni shell to fcc Ag core, which decreases the adsorption capacity of styrene on the metastable phase Ni surface, thus preventing full hydrogenation. This work has gained crucial research significance for the design of high performance metastable phase catalysts.

Layered Quasi-Nevskite Metastable-Phase Cobalt Oxide Accelerates Alkaline Oxygen Evolution Reaction Kinetics

Clarifying the structure-reactivity relationship of non-noble-metal electrocatalysts is one of the decisive factors for the practical application of water electrolysis. In this field, the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with a sluggish kinetic process has become a huge challenge for large-scale production of high-purity hydrogen. Here we synthesize a layered quasi-nevskite metastable-phase cobalt oxide (LQNMP-Co2O3) nanosheet via a simple molten alkali synthesis strategy. The unit-cell parameters of LQNMP-Co2O3 are determined to be a = b = 2.81 Å and c = 6.89 Å with a space group of P3̅m1 (No. 164). The electrochemical results show that the LQNMP-Co2O3 electrocatalyst enables delivering an ultralow overpotential of 266 mV at a current density of 10 mA cmgeo-2 with excellent durability. The operando XANES and EXAFS analyses clearly reveal the origin of the OER activity and the electrochemical stability of the LQNMP-Co2O3 electrocatalyst. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations show that the energy barrier of the rate-determining step (RDS) (from *O to *OOH) is significantly reduced on the LQNMP-Co2O3 electrocatalyst by comparing with simulated monolayered CoO2 (M-CoO2).

RuO2 Catalysts for Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution in Acidic Media: Mechanism, Activity Promotion Strategy and Research Progress

Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis (PEMWE) under acidic conditions outperforms alkaline water electrolysis in terms of less resistance loss, higher current density, and higher produced hydrogen purity, which make it more economical in long-term applications. However, the efficiency of PEMWE is severely limited by the slow kinetics of anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), poor catalyst stability, and high cost. Therefore, researchers in the past decade have made great efforts to explore cheap, efficient, and stable electrode materials. Among them, the RuO2 electrocatalyst has been proved to be a major promising alternative to Ir-based catalysts and the most promising OER catalyst owing to its excellent electrocatalytic activity and high pH adaptability. In this review, we elaborate two reaction mechanisms of OER (lattice oxygen mechanism and adsorbate evolution mechanism), comprehensively summarize and discuss the recently reported RuO2-based OER electrocatalysts under acidic conditions, and propose many advanced modification strategies to further improve the activity and stability of RuO2-based electrocatalytic OER. Finally, we provide suggestions for overcoming the challenges faced by RuO2 electrocatalysts in practical applications and make prospects for future research. This review provides perspectives and guidance for the rational design of highly active and stable acidic OER electrocatalysts based on PEMWE.

Carbon dots tailoring the interfacial proton and charge transfer of iridium nanowires with stress strain for boosting bifunctional hydrogen catalysis

The effective harnessing of hydrogen energy relies on the development of bifunctional electrocatalysts that facilitate hydrogen evolution/oxidation reactions (HER/HOR) with high catalytic activity. The design of such electrocatalysts requires the consideration of not only the volcano relationship with hydrogen binding energy (HBE) or hydrogen adsorption Gibbs free energy (ΔGH) but also the regulation of catalytic kinetics such as interfacial proton/electron transfer. In this work, unique one-dimensional iridium nanowires with compressive stress are successfully prepared and combined with carbon dots (Ir NWs/CDs). Acting as an electrocatalyst for HER in 0.5 M H2SO4, the optimal Ir NWs/CDs only requires an 18 mV overpotential to achieve a current density of -10 mA cm-2. Furthermore, the optimal Ir NWs/CDs shows high HOR performance with a mass activity (@ 50 mV versus RHE) 1.5 times that of 20% Pt/C and excellent anti-CO toxicity ability which is twice the level of the PtRu/C catalyst. Ir NWs/CDs exhibit enhanced HER/HOR activity due to (1) the appropriate modulation of the binding energy to hydrogen intermediate facilitated by the compressive stress applied to the Ir structure and (2) the improved proton/electron transfer kinetics by optimizing the electronic properties and surface structures through tailored CDs. This study delivers a new strategy for designing and synthesizing efficient acidic HER/HOR bifunctional catalysts.

Cobalt vacancy-originated TiMnCoCN compounds with a self-adjusting ability for the high-efficiency acidic oxygen evolution reaction

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts in acidic media, except for precious IrO2, have difficulty realizing good electrocatalytic activity and high electrochemical stability simultaneously. However, the scarcity of IrO2 as an acidic OER electrocatalyst impedes its large-scale application in hydrogen generation, organic synthesis, nonferrous metal production and sewage disposal. Herein, we report the design and fabrication of a nanoporous TiMnCoCN compound based on the nanoscale Kirkendall effect, possessing an intriguing self-adjusting capability for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in a 0.5 M H2SO4 solution. The nanoporous TiMnCoCN compound electrode for the acidic OER displays a low overpotential of 143 mV for 10 mA cm-2 and exhibits no increase in potential over 50,000 s, which is ascribed to the self-adjusting ability, Carbon/nitrogen (C/N) incorporation and nanoporous architecture. The concentration of inert TiO2 on the reconstructed surface of the compound can self-adjust with the change in OER potential via a cobalt-dissolved vacancy approach according to the stabilization requirement. In this work, the self-reconstruction law of surface structure was discovered, providing a novel strategy for designing and fabricating nonnoble OER electrocatalysts with superior catalytic performance and robust stability in acidic media.

Unraveling the Most Relevant Features for the Design of Iridium Mixed Oxides with High Activity and Durability for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Acidic Media

Proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) is the technology of choice for the large-scale production of green hydrogen from renewable energy. Current PEMWEs utilize large amounts of critical raw materials such as iridium and platinum in the anode and cathode electrodes, respectively. In addition to its high cost, the use of Ir-based catalysts may represent a critical bottleneck for the large-scale production of PEM electrolyzers since iridium is a very expensive, scarce, and ill-distributed element. Replacing iridium from PEM anodes is a challenging matter since Ir-oxides are the only materials with sufficient stability under the highly oxidant environment of the anode reaction. One of the current strategies aiming to reduce Ir content is the design of advanced Ir-mixed oxides, in which the introduction of cations in different crystallographic sites can help to engineer the Ir active sites with certain characteristics, that is, environment, coordination, distances, oxidation state, etc. This strategy comes with its own problems, since most mixed oxides lack stability during the OER in acidic electrolyte, suffering severe structural reconstruction, which may lead to surfaces with catalytic activity and durability different from that of the original mixed oxide. Only after understanding such a reconstruction process would it be possible to design durable and stable Ir-based catalysts for the OER. In this Perspective, we highlight the most successful strategies to design Ir mixed oxides for the OER in acidic electrolyte and discuss the most promising lines of evolution in the field.

Low Catalyst Loading Enhances Charge Accumulation for Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Solar water oxidation is a critical step in artificial photosynthesis. Successful completion of the process requires four holes and releases four protons. It depends on the consecutive accumulation of charges at the active site. While recent research has shown an obvious dependence of the reaction kinetics on the hole concentrations on the surface of heterogeneous (photo)electrodes, little is known about how the catalyst density impacts the reaction rate. Using atomically dispersed Ir catalysts on hematite, we report a study on how the interplay between the catalyst density and the surface hole concentration influences the reaction kinetics. At low photon flux, where surface hole concentrations are low, faster charge transfer was observed on photoelectrodes with low catalyst density compared to high catalyst density; at high photon flux and high applied potentials, where surface hole concentrations are moderate or high, slower surface charge recombination was afforded by low-density catalysts. The results support that charge transfer between the light absorber and the catalyst is reversible; they reveal the unexpected benefits of low-density catalyst loading in facilitating forward charge transfer for desired chemical reactions. Accelerating the Discovery of Metastable IrO2 for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction by the Self-Learning-Input Graph Neural Network

The discovery of active and stable catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is vital to improve water electrolysis. To date, rutile iridium dioxide IrO₂ is the only known OER catalyst in the acidic solution, while its poor activity restricts its practical viability. Herein, we propose a universal graph neural network, namely, CrystalGNN, and introduce a dynamic embedding layer to self-update atomic inputs during the training process. Based on this framework, we train a model to accurately predict the formation energies of 10,500 IrO₂ configurations and discover 8 unreported metastable phases, among which C2/m-IrO₂ and P62-IrO₂ are identified as excellent electrocatalysts to reach the theoretical OER overpotential limit at their most stable surfaces. Our self-learning-input CrystalGNN framework exhibits reliable accuracy, generalization, and transferring ability and successfully accelerates the bottom-up catalyst design of novel metastable IrO₂ to boost the OER activity.
