Abstract
BACKGROUND There has been a dramatic shift in food systems, and the consumption of commercially processed and packaged foods has grown globally, including among older infants and young children. Many of these products are ultraprocessed and contain additives, with concerning implications for the health and nutrition of children. OBJECTIVES The study objectives were as follows: 1) to assess the levels of processing among different commercially produced complementary food product (CPCF) categories marketed in the Southeast Asia region, 2) to compare the nutrient content of CPCF products across levels of processing, and 3) to assess the types of additives present in different CPCF categories. METHODS This cross-sectional study involved secondary analysis of a cross-sectional dataset of product label information from CPCF purchased in 2021 in Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, and Viet Nam. Ingredient lists were reviewed to determine the level of processing-based on the Nova classification-and the presence of additives. Nutrient declaration panels were reviewed to determine total sugar, sodium, and total fat. RESULTS Nearly half of all CPCF were ultraprocessed, with total sugar and sodium content significantly higher among ultraprocessed CPCF than unprocessed/minimally processed products. Almost half of CPCF contained additives, with a median of 6 per product. More than 30% of all CPCF made use of cosmetic additives to enhance the products' appearance, flavor, or texture, with emulsifiers, colors, and thickeners the most prevalent. Almost one-third of products contained additives not permitted in Codex Alimentarius standards and guidelines for CPCF. CONCLUSIONS Findings from this study should alert national governments to both adopt and ensure enforcement of Codex guidance on additives and regulations enacted to encourage lower levels of processing for CPCF.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Our understanding of particular gut microbiota members such as Bifidobacterium and Enterococcus in low-middle-income countries remains very limited, particularly early life strain-level beneficial traits. This study addresses this gap by exploring a collection of bacterial strains isolated from the gut of Zimbabwean infants; comparing their genomic characteristics with strains isolated from infants across North America, Europe, and other regions of Africa. MATERIALS AND METHOD From 110 infant stool samples collected in Harare, Zimbabwe, 20 randomly selected samples were used to isolate dominant early-life gut microbiota members Bifidobacterium and Enterococcus. Isolated strains were subjected to whole genome sequencing and bioinformatics analysis including functional annotation of carbohydrates, human milk oligosaccharide (HMO) and protein degradation genes and clusters, and the presence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). RESULTS The study observed some location-based clustering within the main five identified taxonomic groups. Furthermore, there were varying and overall species-specific numbers of genes belonging to different GH families encoded within the analysed dataset. Additionally, distinct strain- and species-specific variances were identified in the potential of Bifidobacterium for metabolizing HMOs. Analysis of putative protease activity indicated a consistent presence of gamma-glutamyl hydrolases in Bifidobacterium, while Enterococcus genomes exhibited a high abundance of aspartyl peptidases. Both genera harboured resistance genes against multiple classes of antimicrobial drugs, with Enterococcus genomes containing a higher number of ARGs compared to Bifidobacterium, on average. CONCLUSION This study identified promising probiotic strains within Zimbabwean isolates, offering the potential for early-life diet and microbial therapies. However, the presence of antibiotic resistance genes in infant-associated microbes raises concerns for infection risk and next-stage probiotic development. Further investigation in larger cohorts, particularly in regions with limited existing data on antibiotic and probiotic use, is crucial to validate these initial insights. IMPACT STATEMENT This research represents the first investigation of its kind in the Zimbabwean context, focusing on potential probiotic strains within the early-life gut microbiota. By identifying local probiotic strains, this research can contribute to the development of probiotic interventions that are tailored to the Zimbabwean population, which can help address local health challenges and promote better health outcomes for infants. Another essential aspect of the study is the investigation of antimicrobial resistance genes present in Zimbabwean bacterial strains. Antimicrobial resistance is a significant global health concern, and understanding the prevalence and distribution of resistance genes in different regions can help inform public health policies and interventions.

Abstract
Several strategies, programs and policies have long been developed and implemented to alleviate child malnutrition in sub-Saharan African countries. However, stunting and wasting still persist at an alarming rate, suggesting that alternative strategies are needed to induce faster progress toward the 2030 SDGs targets of reducing malnutrition. Gut microbiota-directed intervention is now being recognized as an unconventional powerful approach to mitigate malnutrition and improve overall child health. In an African setting, manufactured probiotic and synbiotic foods or supplements may not be successful owing to the non-affordability and high attachment of African populations to their food tradition. This review analyses the potential of indigenous fermented cereal-based products including porridges, doughs, beverages, bread- and yoghurt-like products, to be used as microbiota-directed foods for over 6 months children. The discussion includes relevant strategies to effectively enhance the beneficial effects of these products on gut microbiota composition for improved child health and nutrition in sub-Saharan Africa. Characterization of probiotic features and general safety of food processing in sub-Saharan Africa as well as randomized clinical studies are still lacking to fully ascertain the health effects and suitability of these fermented foods in preventing and treating child malnutrition and diarrhea.

Abstract
This comprehensive review highlights the intricate interplay between maternal factors and the co-development of the microbiome and immune system in neonatal calves. Based on human and mouse studies, multiple prenatal and postnatal factors influence this process by altering the host-associated microbiomes (gut, respiratory tract, skin), microbial colonization trajectories, and priming of the immune systems (mucosal and systemic). This review emphasizes the importance of early life exposure, highlighting postnatal factors that work in synergy with maternal factors in further finetuning the co-development of the neonatal microbiome and immunity. In cattle, there is a general lack of research to identify the maternal effect on the early colonization process of neonatal calves (gut, respiratory tract) and its impact on the priming of the immune system. Past studies have primarily investigated the maternal effects on the passive transfer of immunity at birth. The co-development process of the microbiome and immune system is vital for lifelong health and production in cattle. Therefore, comprehensive research beyond the traditional focus on passive immunity is an essential step in this endeavor. Calf microbiome research reports the colonization of diverse bacterial communities in newborns, which is affected by the colostrum feeding method immediately after birth. In contrast to human studies reporting a strong link between maternal and infant bacterial communities, there is a lack of evidence to clearly define cow-to-calf transmission in cattle. Maternal exposure has been shown to promote the colonization of beneficial bacteria in neonatal calves. Nonetheless, calf microbiome research lacks links to early development of the immune system. An in-depth understanding of the impact of maternal factors on microbiomes and immunity will improve the management of pregnant cows to raise immune-fit neonatal calves. It is essential to investigate the diverse effects of maternal health conditions and nutrition during pregnancy on the gut microbiome and immunity of neonatal calves through collaboration among researchers from diverse fields such as microbiology, immunology, nutrition, veterinary science, and epidemiology.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Maternal nutritional status before and during pregnancy is an important determinant of foetal health. In West Africa, maternal and child undernutrition remains a major public health problem and it is important to establish the mechanistic pathway linking the two disorders to help address the problem. We therefore assessed the mediating role of low birth weight (LBW) in the relationship of maternal undernutrition with child undernutrition in West Africa. METHODS We included recent (2010-2019) DHS data from thirteen West African countries. Poisson regression model with robust standard errors was used to assess the relationship between maternal undernutrition (body mass index and anaemia) and child undernutrition (stunting, wasting, underweight, and anaemia). Structural equation modelling was used to conduct the mediation analysis. RESULTS Prevalence of stunting, wasting, underweight, and anaemia among under-five children in West Africa was found to be 32.4%, 8.1%, 20.1%, and 71.5%, respectively. We found children of underweight mothers to be more likely to be undernourished (stunted, wasted, and underweight) and anaemic compared to children of normal-weight mothers. Also, children of anaemic mothers were more likely to be stunted and anaemic but not wasted compared with children of non-anaemic mothers. LBW mediated the observed relationships between maternal BMI and childhood stunting (22.6%), and maternal anaemia and childhood stunting (24.9%), wasting (11.7), and anaemia (6.6%). CONCLUSION We found maternal undernutrition to be associated with child undernutrition in West Africa with LBW noted to be a mediator of the observed relationship. We recommend that, to address the child undernutrition problem in West Africa, governments and policymakers must integrate measures to address the burden of LBW.

Abstract
There is rapidly growing awareness of microbiome assembly and function in early-life gut health. Although many factors, such as antibiotic use and highly processed diets, impinge on this process, most research has focused on people residing in high-income countries. However, much of the world's population lives in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where, in addition to erratic antibiotic use and suboptimal diets, these groups experience unique challenges. Indeed, many children in LMICs are infected with intestinal helminths. Although helminth infections are strongly associated with diverse developmental co-morbidities and induce profound microbiome changes, few studies have directly examined whether intersecting pathways between these components of the holobiont shape health outcomes in early life. Here, we summarize microbial colonization within the first years of human life, how helminth-mediated changes to the gut microbiome may affect postnatal growth, and why more research on this relationship may improve health across the lifespan.

Abstract
Childhood malnutrition is a metabolic condition that affects the physical and mental well-being of children and leads to resultant disorders in maturity. The development of childhood malnutrition is influenced by a number of physiological and environmental factors including metabolic stress, infections, diet, genetic variables, and gut microbiota. The imbalanced gut microbiota is one of the main environmental risk factors that significantly influence host physiology and childhood malnutrition progression. In this review, we have evaluated the gut microbiota association with undernutrition and overnutrition in children, and then the quantitative and qualitative significance of gut dysbiosis in order to reveal the impact of gut microbiota modification using probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, postbiotics, fecal microbiota transplantation, and engineering biology methods as new therapeutic challenges in the management of disturbed energy homeostasis. Understanding the host-microbiota interaction and the remote regulation of other organs and pathways by gut microbiota can improve the effectiveness of new therapeutic approaches and mitigate the negative consequences of childhood malnutrition.

Abstract
The microbiota in the intermediate snail hosts of human schistosomes can significantly affect host biology. For decades, researchers have developed axenic snails to manipulate the symbiotic microbiota. This review summarizes the characteristics of symbiotic microbes in intermediate snail hosts and describes their interactions with snails, affecting snail growth, development, and parasite transmission ability. We focus on advances in axenic and gnotobiotic technologies for studying snail-microbe interactions and exploring the role of microbiota in snail susceptibility to Schistosoma infection. We discuss the challenges related to axenic and gnotobiotic snails, possible solutions to address these challenges, and future research directions to deepen our understanding of snail-microbiota interactions, with the aim to develop microbiota-based strategies for controlling snail populations and reducing their competence in transmitting parasites.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The link between gut microbiota and chronic painful conditions has recently gained attention. Nutrition, as a common intervention in daily life and medical practice, is closely related to microbiota and pain. However, no published bibliometric reports have analyzed the scientific literature concerning the link. METHODS AND RESULTS We used bibliometrics to identify the characteristics of the global scientific output over the past 20 years. We also aimed to capture and describe how nutrition can modulate the abovementioned link. Relevant papers were searched in the Web of Science database. All necessary publication and citation data were acquired and exported to Bibliometrix for further analyses. The keywords mentioned were illustrated using visualization maps. In total, 1551 papers shed light on the relationship from 2003 to 2022. However, only 122 papers discussed how nutritional interventions can modulate this link. The citations and attention were concentrated on the gut microbiota, pain, and probiotics in terms of the pain-gut relationship. Nutritional status has gained attention in motor themes of a thematic map. CONCLUSIONS This bibliometric analysis was applied to identify the scientific literature linking gut microbiota, chronic painful conditions, and nutrition, revealing the popular research topics and authors, scientific institutions, countries, and journals in this field. This study enriches the evidence moving boundaries of microbiota medicine as a clinical medicine.
