Transition-metal-bridged bimetallic clusters with multiple uranium–metal bonds

Oxidative Addition of E-H (E=C, N) Bonds to Transient Uranium(II) Centers

Two-electron oxidative addition is one of the most important elementary reactions for d-block transition metals but it is uncommon for f-block elements. Here, we report the first examples of intermolecular oxidative addition of E-H (E=C, N) bonds to uranium(II) centers. The transient U(II) species was formed in-situ by reducing a heterometallic cluster featuring U(IV)-Pd(0) bonds with potassium-graphite (KC8). Oxidative addition of C-H or N-H bonds to the U(II) centers was observed when this transient U(II) species was treated with benzene, carbazole or 1-adamantylamine, respectively. The U(II) centers could also react with tetracene, biphenylene or N2O, leading to the formation of arene reduced U(IV) products and uranyl(VI) species via two- or four-electron processes. This study demonstrates that the intermolecular two-electron oxidative addition reactions are viable for actinide elements.

Planar Tetranuclear Uranium Hydride Cluster Supported by ansa-Bis(cyclopentadienyl) Ligands

Polynuclear metal hydride clusters play important roles in various catalytic processes, with most of the reported polynuclear metal hydride clusters adopting a polyhedral three-dimensional structure. Herein, we report the first example of a planar tetranuclear uranium hydride cluster [(CpCMe2CMe2Cp)U]4(μ2-H)4(μ3-H)4 (U4H8). It was synthesized by reacting an ansa-bis(cyclopentadienyl) ligand-supported uranium chloride precursor [(CpCMe2CMe2Cp)U]3(μ2-Cl)3(μ3-Cl)2 with NaHBEt3. The presence of hydrides in U4H8 was confirmed by NMR spectroscopy and its reactivity with phenol and carbon tetrachloride. DFT calculations also facilitated the determination of the hydrides' positions in U4H8, featuring four bridging μ2-H ligands and four face-capping μ3-H ligands, with the four U centers arranged in a rhombic geometry. The U4H8 represents not only the first example of planar polynuclear actinide metal hydride cluster but also the uranium hydride cluster with the highest nuclearity reported to date.

Multiconfigurational actinide nitrides assisted by double Möbius aromaticity

Understanding the bonding nature between actinides and main-group elements remains a key challenge in actinide chemistry due to the involvement of f orbitals. Herein, we propose a unique "aromaticity-assisted multiconfiguration" (AAM) model to elucidate the bonding nature in actinide nitrides (An2N2, An = Ac, Th, Pa, U). Each planar four-membered An2N2 with equivalent An-N bonds possesses four delocalized π electrons and four delocalized σ electrons, forming a new family of double Möbius aromaticity that contributes to the molecular stability. The unprecedented aromaticity further supports actinide nitrides to exhibit multiconfigurational characters, where the unpaired electrons (2, 4 or 6 in naked Th2N2, Pa2N2 or U2N2, respectively) either are spin-free and localized on metal centres or form metal-ligand bonds. High-level multiconfigurational computations confirm an open-shell singlet ground state for actinide nitrides, with small energy gaps to high spin states. This is consistent with the antiferromagnetic nature observed experimentally in uranium nitrides. The novel AAM bonding model can be authenticated in both experimentally identified compounds containing a U2N2 motif and other theoretically modelled An2N2 clusters and is thus expected to be a general chemical bonding pattern between actinides and main-group elements.

Electronic Delocalization and σ-Aromaticity in Heterometallic Cluster with Multiple Thorium-Palladium Bonds

Research on metal-metal bonds involving f-block actinides, such as thorium, lags far behind the well-studied metal-metal bonds of d-block transition metals. The complexes with Th-TM bonds are extremely rare; all previously identified examples have only a single Th-TM bond with the Th center at an invariably +IV oxidation state. Herein, we report a series of Th2Pdn (n = 2, 3, and 6) clusters (complexes 3, 4, and 7) with multiple Th(III)-Pd bonds. Theoretical studies reveal that the Th2Pdn unit allows electronic delocalization and σ aromaticity, leading to unexpected closed-shell singlet structures for these Th(III) species. This electronic delocalization is evident in the highest occupied molecular orbital of Th(III) complexes and facilitates a 2e reduction of alkyne by complex 7, resulting in the formation of 8. Complexes 7 and 8 are distinctive in featuring a Th2Pd6 core with six and eight Th-Pd bonds, respectively, making them the largest known d-f heterometallic clusters exhibiting metal-metal bonding.

Thorium(IV)-antimony complexes exhibiting single, double, and triple polar covalent metal-metal bonds

There is continued burgeoning interest in metal-metal multiple bonding to further our understanding of chemical bonding across the periodic table. However, although polar covalent metal-metal multiple bonding is well known for the d and p blocks, it is relatively underdeveloped for actinides. Homometallic examples are found in spectroscopic or fullerene-confined species, and heterometallic variants exhibiting a polar covalent σ bond supplemented by up to two dative π bonds are more prevalent. Hence, securing polar covalent actinide double and triple metal-metal bonds under normal experimental conditions has been a fundamental target. Here we exploit the protonolysis and dehydrocoupling chemistry of the parent dihydrogen-antimonide anion, to report one-, two- and three-fold thorium-antimony bonds, thus introducing polar covalent actinide-metal multiple bonding under normal experimental conditions between some of the heaviest ions in the periodic table with little or no bulky-substituent protection at the antimony centre. This provides fundamental insights into heavy element multiple bonding, in particular the tension between orbital-energy-driven and overlap-driven covalency for the actinides in a relativistic regime.

Site-Recognition-Induced Structural and Photoluminescent Evolution of the Gold-Pincer Nanocluster

The induced structural transformation provides an efficient way to precisely modulate the fine structures and the corresponding performance of gold nanoclusters, thus constituting one of the important research topics in cluster chemistry. However, the driving forces and mechanisms of these processes are still ambiguous in many cases, limiting further applications. In this work, based on the unique coordination mode of the pincer ligand-stabilized gold nanocluster Au8(PNP)4, we revealed the site-recognition mechanism for induced transformations of gold nanoclusters. The "open nitrogen sites" on the surface of the nanocluster interact with different inducers including organic compounds and metals and trigger the conversion of Au8(PNP)4 to Au13 and Au9Ag4 nanoclusters, respectively. Control experiments verified the site-recognition mechanism, and the femtosecond and nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy revealed the electronic and photoluminescent evolution accompanied by the structural transformation.

Temperature induced single-crystal to single-crystal transformation of uranium azide complexes

The monomeric and dimeric uranium azide complexes {[(CH3)2NCH2CH2NPiPr2]2U(N3)2} (2) and {[(CH3)2NCH2CH2NPiPr2]2U(N3)2}2 (3) were synthesized by treating complex 1 with NaN3 at 60 and -20 °C, respectively. A temperature-induced single-crystal to single-crystal transformation of 3 to 2 was observed. The reduction of either 2 or 3 with KC8 yields a uranium nitride complex {[(CH3)2NCH2CH2NPiPr2]4U2(μ-N)2} (4).

Cooperative dihydrogen activation with unsupported uranium-metal bonds and characterization of a terminal U(iv) hydride

Cooperative chemistry between two or more metal centres can show enhanced reactivity compared to the monometallic fragments. Given the paucity of actinide-metal bonds, especially those with group 13, we targeted uranium(iii)-aluminum(i) and -gallium(i) complexes as we envisioned the low-valent oxidation state of both metals would lead to novel, cooperative reactivity. Herein, we report the molecular structure of [(C5Me5)2(MesO)U-E(C5Me5)], E = Al, Ga, Mes = 2,4,6-Me3C6H2, and their reactivity with dihydrogen. The reaction of H2 with the U(iii)-Al(i) complex affords a trihydroaluminate complex, [(C5Me5)2(MesO)U(μ2-(H)3)-Al(C5Me5)] through a formal three-electron metal-based reduction, with concomitant formation of a terminal U(iv) hydride, [(C5Me5)2(MesO)U(H)]. Noteworthy is that neither U(iii) complexes nor [(C5Me5)Al]4 are capable of reducing dihydrogen on their own. To make the terminal hydride in higher yields, the reaction of [(C5Me5)2(MesO)U(THF)] with half an equivalent of diethylzinc generates [(C5Me5)2(MesO)U(CH2CH3)] or treatment of [(C5Me5)2U(i)(Me)] with KOMes forms [(C5Me5)2(MesO)U(CH3)], which followed by hydrogenation with either complex cleanly affords [(C5Me5)2(MesO)U(H)]. All complexes have been characterized by spectroscopic and structural methods and are rare examples of cooperative chemistry in f element chemistry, dihydrogen activation, and stable, terminal ethyl and hydride compounds with an f element.

Magnesium complexes supported by a dianionic double layer nitrogen-phosphorus ligand: a synthesis and reactivity study

A heterobimetallic complex [MeN(CH2CH2NPiPr)2MgLiCl(THF)]2 (1) supported by a dianionic double layer nitrogen-phosphorus ligand was synthesized by the reaction of H2L1 (H2L1 = MeN(CH2CH2NHPiPr)2) with MgCl2 in the presence of n-BuLi. Reactions of complex 1 with 2 equivalents of CuI, AgI and AuCl·SMe2 led to the formation of heterobimetallic clusters [MeN(CH2CH2NPiPr)2MgCuI]2 (2), [MeN(CH2CH2NPiPr)2MgAgI]2 (3) and [MeN(CH2CH2NPiPr)2MgAuCl]2 (4), respectively. X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis revealed that these complexes are dimers, which are composed of two [MeN(CH2CH2NPiPr)2Mg] units connected by coinage metals (i.e., Cu, Ag, and Au). The reactivity of 1 was further investigated and it was found that complex 1 could react with 4 equivalents of MeI, giving a complex [CH3N(CH2CH2NPiPr2Me)2MgI]+[I]- (5), which can be viewed as a magnesium complex supported by a neutral double layer nitrogen-phosphorus ligand (CH3N(CH2CH2NPiPr2Me)2). Complex 1 could also react with 2 equivalents of NaNH2, leading to the isolation of an amido anion bridged magnesium-sodium heterobimetallic cluster [MeN(CH2CH2NPiPr)2MgNaNH2]2 (6).

Heterometallic Clusters with Cerium-Transition-Metal Bonding Supported by Nitrogen-Phosphorus Ligands

Ligands are known to play a crucial role in the construction of complexes with metal-metal bonds. Compared with metal-metal bonds involving d-block transition metals, knowledge of the metal-metal bonds involving f-block rare-earth metals still lags far behind. Herein, we report a series of complexes with cerium-transition-metal bonds, which are supported by two kinds of nitrogen-phosphorus ligands N[CH2CH2NHPiPr2]3 (VI) and PyNHCH2PPh2 (VII). The reactions of zerovalent group 10 metal precursors, Pd(PPh3)4 and Pt(PPh3)4, with the cerium complex supported by VI generate heterometallic clusters [N{CH2CH2NPiPr2}3Ce(μ-M)]2 (M = Pd, 2 and M = Pt, 3) featuring four Ce-M bonds; meanwhile, the bimetallic species [(PyNCH2PPh2)3Ce-M] (M = Ni, 5; M = Pd, 6; and M = Pt, 7) with a single Ce-M bond were isolated from the reactions of the cerium precursor 4 supported by VII with Ni(COD)2, Pd(PPh3)4, or Pt(PPh3)4, respectively. These complexes represent the first example of species with an RE-M bond between Ce and group 10 metals, and 2 and 3 contain the largest number of RE-M donor/acceptor interactions ever to have been observed in a molecule.

Tetravalent Uranium and Thorium Complexes: Elucidating Disparate Reactivities of AnIVCl2 (An = U, Th) Supported by a Pyridine-Decorated Dianionic Ligand

Although synthesis, reactivity, and bonding of U(IV) and Th(IV) complexes have been extensively studied, direct comparison of fully analogous compounds is rare. Herein, we report corresponding complexes 1-U and 1-Th, in which U(IV) and Th(IV) are supported by the tetradentate pyridine-decorated dianionic ligand N₂NN' (1,1,1-trimethyl-N-(2-(((pyridin-2-ylmethyl)(2-((trimethylsilyl)amino)benzyl)amino)methyl)phenyl)silanamine). Although 1-U and 1-Th are structurally very similar, they display disparate reactivities with TMS₃SiK (tris(trimethylsilyl)silylpotassium). The reaction of (N₂NN')UCl₂ (1-U) and 1 equiv of TMS₃SiK in THF unexpectedly formed [Cl(N₂NN')U]₂O (2-U) featuring an unusual bent U-O-U moiety. In contrast, a salt elimination reaction between (N₂NN')ThCl₂ (1-Th) and 1 equiv of TMS₃SiK led to thorium complex 2-Th, in which the pyridyl group has undergone a 1,4-addition nucleophilic attack. Complex 2-Th serves as a synthon for preparing dimetallic bis-azide complex 3-Th by reaction with NaN₃. The complexes were characterized by X-ray crystal diffraction, solution NMR, FT-IR, and elemental analysis. Computations of the formation mechanism of 2-U from 1-U suggest reduced U(III) as a key intermediate for promoting the cleavage of the C-O bonds of THF. The inaccessible nature of Th(III) as an intermediate oxidation state explains the very different reactivity of 1-Th versus 1-U. Given that reactants 1-U and 1-Th and products 2-U and 2-Th all comprise tetravalent actinides, this is an unusual case of very disparate reactivity despite no net change in the oxidation state. Complexes 2-U and 3-Th provide a basis for the synthesis of other dinuclear actinide complexes with novel reactivity and properties.

Are U-U Bonds Inside Fullerenes Really Unwilling Bonds?

Previous characterizations of diactinide endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) Th₂@C₈₀ and U₂@C₈₀ have shown that although the two Th³⁺ ions form a strong covalent bond within the carbon cage, the interaction between the U³⁺ ions is weaker and described as an "unwilling" bond. To evaluate the feasibility of covalent U-U bonds, which are neglected in classical actinide chemistry, we have first investigated the formation of smaller diuranium EMFs by laser ablation using mass spectrometric detection of dimetallic U₂@C_2n species with 2n ≥ 50. DFT, CASPT2 calculations, and MD simulations for several fullerenes of different sizes and symmetries showed that thanks to the formation of strong U(5f³)-U(5f³) triple bonds, two U³⁺ ions can be incarcerated inside the fullerene. The formation of U-U bonds competes with U-cage interactions that tend to separate the U ions, hindering the observation of short U-U distances in the crystalline structures of diuranium endofullerenes as in U₂@C₈₀. Smaller cages like C₆₀ exhibit the two interactions, and a strong triple U-U bond with an effective bond order higher than 2 is observed. Although 5f-5f interactions are responsible for the covalent interactions at distances close to 2.5 Å, overlap between 7s6d orbitals is still detected above 4 Å. In general, metal ions within fullerenes should be regarded as templates in cage formation, not as statistically confined units that have little chance of being observed.

A versatile strategy for the formation of hydride-bridged actinide-iridium multimetallics

Reaction of the potassium pentamethylcyclopentadienyl iridate tris-hydride K[IrCp*H₃] with UCl₄ and ThCl₄(DME)₂ led to the complete replacement of the halide ligands to generate multimetallic complexes U{(μ-H)₃IrCp*}₄ (1) and Th{[(μ-H₂)(H)IrCp*]₂[(μ-H)₃IrCp*]₂} (2), respectively. These analogues feature a significant discrepancy in hydride bonding modes; 1 contains twelve bridging hydrides while 2 contains ten bridging hydrides and two terminal, Ir-bound hydrides. Use of a U(iii) starting material, UI₃(1,4-dioxane)_1.5, resulted in the octanuclear complex {U[(μ²-H₃)IrCp*]₂[(μ³-H₂)IrCp*]}₂ (3). Computational studies indicate significant bonding character between U/Th and Ir in 1 and 2, with f-orbital involvement in the singly-occupied molecular orbitals of the uranium species 1. In addition, these studies attribute the variation in hydride bonding between 1 and 2 to differences in dispersion effects.

Structure and assembly of a hexanuclear AuNi bimetallic nanocluster

An Au₄Ni₂ nanocluster containing a square-planar [-PPh₂-Au-S-Au-]₂ ring and two nickel-pincer arms is reported here. Abundant intra- and inter-cluster noncovalent interactions promote the assembly of the nanocluster into a porous framework material. The assembly-dependent unique solubility and photoluminescence were also investigated.

Heterometallic bond activation enabled by unsymmetrical ligand scaffolds: bridging the opposites

Heterobi- and multimetallic complexes providing close proximity between several metal centers serve as active species in artificial and enzymatic catalysis, and in model systems, showing unique modes of metal-metal cooperative bond activation. Through the rational design of well-defined, unsymmetrical ligand scaffolds, we create a convenient approach to support the assembly of heterometallic species in a well-defined and site-specific manner, preventing them from scrambling and dissociation. In this perspective, we will outline general strategies for the design of unsymmetrical ligands to support heterobi- and multimetallic complexes that show reactivity in various types of heterometallic cooperative bond activation.

Recent advances in heterometallic clusters with f-block metal-metal bonds: synthesis, reactivity and applications

Due to the heterometallic synergistic effects from different metals, heterometallic clusters are of great importance in small-molecule activation and catalysis. For example, both biological nitrogen fixation and photosynthetic splitting of water into oxygen are thought to involve multimetallic catalytic sites with d-block transition metals. Benefitting from the larger coordination numbers of f-block metals (rare-earth metals and actinide elements), heterometallic clusters containing f-block metal-metal bonds have long attracted the interest of both experimental and theoretical chemists. Therefore, a series of effective strategies or platforms have been developed in recent years for the construction of heterometallic clusters with f-block metal-metal bonds. More importantly, synergistic effects between f-block metals and transition metals have been observed in small-molecule activation and catalysis. This tutorial review highlights the recent advances in the construction of heterometallic molecular clusters with f-block metal-metal bonds and also their reactivities and applications. It is hoped that this tutorial review will persuade chemists to develop more efficient strategies to construct clusters with f-block metal-metal bonds and also further expand their applications with heterometallic synergistic effects.

Progress in solid state and coordination chemistry of actinides in China

In the past decade, the area of solid state chemistry of actinides has witnessed a rapid development in China, based on the significantly increased proportion of the number of actinide containing crystal structures reported by Chinese researchers from only 2% in 2010 to 36% in 2021. In this review article, we comprehensively overview the synthesis, structure, and characterizations of representative actinide solid compounds including oxo-compounds, organometallic compounds, and endohedral metallofullerenes reported by Chinese researchers. In addition, Chinese researchers pioneered several potential applications of actinide solid compounds in terms of adsorption, separation, photoelectric materials, and photo-catalysis, which are also briefly discussed. It is our hope that this contribution not only calls for further development of this area in China, but also arouses new research directions and interests in actinide chemistry and material sciences.

Heterometallic Clusters with Uranium-Metal Bonds Supported by Double-Layer Nitrogen-Phosphorus Ligands

ConspectusHeterometallic clusters with M-M bonds have significantly interested chemists because of their attractive structures and synergistic effects in small-molecule activation and catalysis. However, reports of the isolation of heterometallic clusters with uranium-transition metal (U-TM) bonds remain very limited. In this Account, we describe our research in the construction of heterometallic molecular clusters with multiple U-TM single or multiple bonds supported by novel double-layer N-P ligands. Multimetallic synergistic catalysis and small-molecule activation with these species are also summarized.First, according to the hard-soft acid-base theory, we employed a three-armed N-P ligand, which can be used to construct heterometallic clusters with four or six U-Ni bonds. This strategy was also effective in the construction of complexes with direct rare earth metal-TM bonding. The similar two-armed N-P ligands also are effective platforms for the synthesis of heterometallic complexes with U-Ni, U-Pd, and U-Pt bonds.Second, a set of heterometallic clusters featuring U≡Rh, U≡Co, and U≡Fe triple bonds were constructed under routine experimental conditions. X-ray diffraction analysis of these clusters exhibits the shortest U-TM bond distance (1.9693(4) Å for the U≡Fe triple bond) in these complexes. Theoretical studies reveal that the nature of the triple bond is one covalent σ bond and two TM → U dative π bonds. A large Wiberg bond index (WBI) of 2.93 and a significant degree of covalency for the U≡TM triple bonds were also found in these complexes.Third, these uranium complexes supported by the double-layer N-P ligands exhibit great potential in small-molecule activation. For instance, N₂ cleavage without an external reducing agent was achieved by a U(III)-P(III) synergistic six-electron reduction. The synergism between U(III) and P(III) enables the activation of other small molecules, such as O₂, P₄, and As⁰_(nano), and highlights the importance of the P atom in the double-layer N-P ligand for the activation of small molecules. A heterometallic cluster with U-Rh bonds can break the strong N≡N triple bond in N₂ in the presence of potassium graphite, suggesting a synergistic effect between U and Rh. This multimetallic synergistic effect was also observed in catalytic processes. A heterometallic cluster with U≡Co triple bonds shows excellent selectivity and activity in the hydroboration of a series of alkynes under mild conditions. These results lead to effective methods for the construction of heterometallic molecular clusters with U-TM single or multiple bonds and could promote the application of heterometallic clusters with U-TM bonds in catalysis and the activation of small molecules.

Uranium: The Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Beyond

This review summarizes the recent developments regarding the use of uranium as nuclear fuel, including recycling and health aspects, elucidated from a chemical point of view, i.e., emphasizing the rich uranium coordination chemistry, which has also raised interest in using uranium compounds in synthesis and catalysis. A number of novel uranium coordination features are addressed, such the emerging number of U(II) complexes and uranium nitride complexes as a promising class of materials for more efficient and safer nuclear fuels. The current discussion about uranium triple bonds is addressed by quantum chemical investigations using local vibrational mode force constants as quantitative bond strength descriptors based on vibrational spectroscopy. The local mode analysis of selected uranium nitrides, N≡U≡N, U≡N, N≡U=NH and N≡U=O, could confirm and quantify, for the first time, that these molecules exhibit a UN triple bond as hypothesized in the literature. We hope that this review will inspire the community interested in uranium chemistry and will serve as an incubator for fruitful collaborations between theory and experimentation in exploring the wealth of uranium chemistry.

Mono- and Disamarium Azacryptand Complexes: A Platform for Cooperative Rare-Earth Metal Chemistry

Mono- (H₃LSm) and disamarium complexes (LSm₂) were prepared by reaction of the azacryptand N[(CH₂)₂NHCH₂-p-C₆H₄CH₂NH(CH₂)₂]₃N (H₆L) with 1 or 2 equiv of Sm[N(SiMe₃)₂]₃, respectively. The disamarium complex features free coordination sites on both metal centers available for bridging ligands shielded by phenylenes from tetrahydrofuran (THF) coordination. The reaction of LSm₂ with KCN and 18-crown-6 yielded the adduct [LSm₂-μ-η¹:η¹-CN][K(18-crown-6)(THF)₂] featuring a bridging cyanide. The complexes were characterized by crystallography, electrochemical analysis, NMR, and optical spectroscopy, and the effective magnetic moments were determined via the Evans method.

First examples of rare-earth metal azacryptand complexes are presented in the form of mono- and dinuclear samarium compounds, which can be prepared selectively. The bridging phenylenes of the azacryptand ligand prevent THF coordination to the samarium ions and provide available binding sites within the complexes. We investigated cyanide coordination using the disamarium complex to demonstrate the utility of the vacant intermetallic space for binding small molecules.

Synthesis of Uranium Single Atom from Radioactive Wastewater for Enhanced Water Dissociation and Hydrogen Evolution

As a common nuclide in radioactive wastewater, uranium (U) is generally treated by landfill, which induces the massive abandonment of uranium resources. In this work, a pulse voltammetry method for the synthesis of U single atoms on MoS₂ (U/MoS₂ ) nanosheets from radioactive wastewater for the electrocatalytic alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is reported. The mass loading of U single atoms is facilely controlled with high selectivity for coexisting ions in radioactive wastewater. In the electrolyte of 1 m of KOH, U/MoS₂ nanosheets with 5.2% of U single atoms exhibit relatively low overpotentials of 72 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 . The mechanistic study reveals that the HER on U/MoS₂ includes the water dissociation on U single atoms to form OH* and H transfer from OH* to adjacent S-edge atoms. This procedure exhibits decreased activation energy for transition state in water dissociation and optimized Gibbs free energy for H* adsorption.

Partial Double Metal-Carbon Bonding Model in Transition Metal Methyl Compounds

The chemical bond between a transition metal and a methyl group (M-CH₃) is typically defined as a single covalent bond, which is of fundamental significance and general interest in understanding the structural properties and reactivity of transition metal alkyl compounds. Herein, we demonstrate that the M-CH₃ bonding involves varying σ and π components and thus should be best described in terms of the partial double M═CH₃ bond. The often-neglected π bonding stems from an occupied π-symmetric orbital of the methyl group comprising all three C-H σ bonds (but one C-H' contributes more than the other two) and a vacant low-lying metal d(π) orbital, and is associated with the intramolecular C-H'···M agostic effect (i.e., an acute M-C-H' angle and a short H'···M distance), whose origin is still controversial. We quantify the geometric and energetic impacts of the π interaction involved in the M-CH₃ bond by explicitly computing the intramolecular π_CH' → d_M interaction with the ab initio valence bond (VB) theory. Our computations of the ligand-free [TiCH₃]³⁺ and a series of metallocene catalysts provide a direct proof for the presence of the π bonding in M-CH₃ bonds, which is the cause for the agostic effect. The partial double M═CH₃ bonding model is not only validated by a range of bonding analyses including VB self-consistent field (VBSCF)-based energy decomposition and quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) but also authenticated by the specific activity of double M═CH₃ bonds in the C-H activation and olefin insertion. More importantly, the σ bond gradually switches from a classical covalent bond to a novel charge-shift bond with the π bonding becoming increasingly significant. We anticipate that the recognition of the π interaction between electrophilic metal centers and C-H bonds can benefit the understanding of the nature of metal-carbon bonds in transition metal ethyl, alkyl, and carbene compounds.

Redox-induced reversible P-P coupling in a uranium complex

A synthesized redox-active multidentate N-P ligand reacted with UCl₄ in the presence of KHMDS or ⁿBuLi, where two novel U(IV) complexes with or without P-P coupling were formed, respectively. The reversible P-P coupling in these complexes was observed in redox-induced reactions.

Ligands enhanced the Ac[triple bond, length as m-dash]Ac triple bond

The multiple bonds between actinide atoms and their derivatives are computationally investigated extensively and compounds with an unsupported actinide-actinide bond, especially in low oxidation states, have attracted great attention. Herein, high level relativistic quantum chemical methods are used to probe the Ac-Ac bonding in compounds with a general formula LAcAcL (L = AsH3, PH3, NH3, H, CO, NO) at both scalar and spin-orbit coupling relativistic levels. H3AsAcAcAsH3, H3PAcAcPH3 and OCAcAcCO compounds show a type of zero valence Ac[triple bond, length as m-dash]Ac triple bond with a 1σ2g1π4u configuration, and H3AsAcAcAsH3 has been found to have the shortest Ac-Ac bond length of 3.012 Å reported so far. The Ac2 unit is very sensitive to the σ donor ligands and can form triple, double and even single bonds when suitable ligands are introduced, up to 3.652 Å with an Ac-Ac single bond in H3NAcAcNH3.

Synthesis and Characterisation of Molecular Polarised-Covalent Thorium-Rhenium and -Ruthenium Bonds

Separate reactions of [Th{N(CH2CH2NSiMe2But)2(CH2CH2NSi(Me)(But)(μ-CH2)]2 (1) with [Re(η5-C5H5)2(H)] (2) or [Ru(η5-C5H5)(H)(CO)2] (3) produced, by alkane elimination, [Th(TrenDMBS)Re(η5-C5H5)2] (ThRe, TrenDMBS = {N(CH2CH2NSiMe2But)3}3-), and [Th(TrenDMBS)Ru(η5-C5H5)(CO)2] (ThRu), which were isolated in crystalline yields of 71% and 62%, respectively. Complex ThRe is the first example of a molecular Th-Re bond to be structurally characterised, and ThRu is only the second example of a structurally authenticated Th-Ru bond. By comparison to isostructural U-analogues, quantum chemical calculations, which are validated by IR and Raman spectroscopic data, suggest that the Th-Re and Th-Ru bonds reported here are more ionic than the corresponding U-Re and U-Ru bonds.

Bimetallic cooperation across the periodic table

Organometallic chemistry and its applications in homogeneous catalysis have been dominated by mononuclear transition-metal complexes. The catalytic performance and physico-chemical properties of these mononuclear complexes can be rationally tuned by ligand modification, which has also led to the discovery of new reactions. There is a growing body of evidence implicating the participation of two metals in catalytic processes originally believed to follow monometallic mechanisms. Moreover, the deliberate preparation of bimetallic structures has proven popular because these preorganized structures have many tunable features, such as metal-metal bond order and polarity. These structures can exhibit metal-metal complementarity and allow for multisite activation - reactivity unattainable with truly mononuclear species. This Perspective summarizes the features that are exclusive to bimetallic systems and their roles in substrate activation.

Triple Frustrated Lewis Pair-Type Reactivity on a Single Rare-Earth Metal Center

Rare-earth metal cations have been used rarely as Lewis-acidic components in the chemistry of frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs). Herein, we report the first cerium/phosphorus system (2) employing a heptadentate N₄ P₃ ligand, which exhibits triple FLP-type reactivity towards a series of organic substrates, including isocyanates, isothiocyanates, diazomethane, and azides on a single rare-earth Lewis acidic Ce center. This result shows that the Ce center and three P atoms in 2 could simultaneously activate three equivalents of small molecules under mild conditions. This study broadens the diversity of FLPs and demonstrates that rare earth based FLP exhibit unique properties compared with other FLP systems.

Uranyl Organic Framework as a Highly Selective and Sensitive Turn-on and Turn-off Luminescent Sensor for Dual Functional Detection Arginine and MnO4. Inorg Chem 2020;59:5004-5017. [PMID: 32207299 DOI: 10.1021/acs.inorgchem.0c00236]

Five new uranyl coordination polymers were prepared by the hydrothermal method based on 5-nitroisophthalic acid (H₂nip) as (UO₂)(nip)(2,2'-bpy) (1), (H₂4,4'-bpy)·[(UO₂)₃(nip)₄]·(4,4'-bpy) (2), (H₂bpe)·[(UO₂)_0.5(nip)] (3), (H₂ bpp)·[(UO₂)₂-(nip)₃]·H₂O (4), and (H₂tmp)·[(UO₂)(nip)₂](5) [2,2'-bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, 4,4'-bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine, bpe = 4,4'-vinylenedipyridine, bpp = 4,4' -trimethylenedipyridine, tmp = tetramethylpyrazine]. All of these synthesized complexes have been characterized by single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, IR spectra, thermogravimetric analysis, elemental analysis, and luminescent properties. In particular, it is found that compounds 1 and 4 can be used as a luminescent sensor to efficiently detect arginine in aqueous solution by means of "turn-on"; the detection limits were 1.06 × 10^-6 and 6.42 × 10^-6 mol/L, respectively. Moreover, 4 can also be used as a bifunctional sensor for selective sensing of MnO₄^- anion by "turn-off". The detection limit of MnO₄^- in water was 1.79 × 10^-6 mol/L; the K_sv was 1.88 × 10⁴. The sensing effect of arginine in simulated grape juice samples and MnO₄^- in simulated river water samples was also investigated by this sensing system with high recovery. In addition, the possible mechanism of sensing arginine and MnO₄^- in the aqueous solution was discussed.

Construction of heterometallic clusters with multiple uranium-metal bonds by using dianionic nitrogen-phosphorus ligands

Compared with the prevalent metal–metal bond in transition metals, examples of the actinide–metal bond in heterometallic clusters are rare. Herein, a series of heterometallic clusters with multiple uranium–metal bonds has been prepared based on two newly synthesized nitrogen–phosphorus ligands L1 {O[(CH₂)₂NHP(ⁱPr)₂]₂} and L2 {[CH₂O(CH₂)₂NHP(ⁱPr)₂]₂}. Different P–P distances, 6.069 and 4.464 Å, are observed in the corresponding uranium complexes 1 {O[(CH₂)₂NP(ⁱPr)₂]₂UCl₂} and 2 {[CH₂O(CH₂)₂NP(ⁱPr)₂]₂UCl₂}, respectively, and lead to the different coordination modes with transition metals. The reactions of zero-valent group 10 metal compounds with complex 1 generate heterometallic clusters (3-U2Ni2 and 4-U2Pd2) featuring four uranium–metal bonds; whereas reactions with 2 afford one-dimensional metal-chain 5-(UNi)n, bimetallic species 6-UPd, and a tri-platinum bridged diuranium molecular cluster 7-U2Pt3. Complex 5-(UNi)n represents the first infinite chain containing the U–M bond and 7-U2Pt3 is the first species with multiple U–Pt bonds. This study further highlights the important role of ligands in the construction of multiple uranium–metal bonds and may allow the synthesis of novel d–f heterometallic clusters and the investigation of their applications in catalysis and small-molecule activation.

Prediction of high bond-order metal-metal multiple-bonds in heterobimetallic 3d-4f/5f complexes [TM-M{N(o-[NCH2P(CH3)2]C6H4)3}] (TM = Cr, Mn, Fe; M = U, Np, Pu, and Nd)

Despite continuing and burgeoning interest in f-block complexes and their bonding chemistry in recent years, investigations of the electronic structures and oxidation states of heterobimetallic complexes, and their bonding features between transition-metals (TMs) and f-elements remain relatively less explored. Here, we report a quantum chemical computational study on the series of TM-actinide and -neodymium complexes [TMAn(L)] and [TMNd(L)] [An = U, Np, Pu; TM = Cr, Mn, Fe; L = {N(o-[NCH₂P(CH₃)₂]C₆H₄)₃}^3-] in order to explore periodic trend, generalities and differences in the electronic structure and metal-metal bonding between f-block and d-block elements. Based on the calculations, we find up to five-fold covalent multiple bonding between actinide and transition metal ions, which is in sharp contrast with a single bond between neodymium and transition metals. From a comparative study, a general trend of strength of the An-TM interaction emerges in accordance with the atomic number of the actinide metal, which relates to the nature, energy level, and spatial arrangement of their frontier orbitals. The trend presents a valuable insight for future experimental endeavour searching for isolable complexes with strong and multiple An-TM bonding interactions, especially for the experimentally challenging transuranic elements that require targeted research due to their radioactive nature.
