Modular bismacycles for the selective C-H arylation of phenols and naphthols

Catalytic and Base-free Suzuki-type α-Arylation of Cyclic 1,3-Dicarbonyls via a Cyclic Iodonium Ylide Strategy

To date, it remains challenging to achieve a general and catalytic α-arylation of cyclic 1,3-dicarbonyls, particularly ubiquitous heteroaromatic ones. In most cases, the preparation of their medically significant arylated derivatives requires multistep synthetic sequences. Herein, we introduce a new, convenient strategy involving the conversion of cyclic 1,3-dicarbonyls to cyclic iodonium ylides (CIYs), followed by rhodium-catalyzed α-arylation with arylboronic reagents via carbene coupling. This approach is mild, operationally simple, base-free, biocompatible, and exhibits broad substrate scope (>100 examples), especially with respect to various heteroaromatic 1,3-dicarbonyls and ortho-substituted or base-sensitive arylboronic acids. Importantly, owing to the excellent compatibility with various arylboronic acids or boronate esters (ArBpin, ArBneop, or ArBF3K), this method allows the late-stage installation of heterocyclic 1,3-dicarbonyl motifs in highly complex settings. The utility of this transformation is further demonstrated through significantly simplifying the synthesis of several bioactive molecules and natural products.

Csp2-H functionalization of phenols: an effective access route to valuable materials via Csp2-C bond formation

In the vast majority of top-selling pharmaceutical and industrial products, phenolic structural motifs are highly prevalent. Non-functionalized simple phenols serve as building blocks in the synthesis of value-added chemicals. It is worth mentioning that lignin, being the largest renewable biomass source of aromatic building blocks in nature, mainly consists of phenolic units, which enable the production of structurally diverse phenols. Given their remarkable applicability in the chemical value chain, many efforts have been devoted to increasing the molecular complexity of the phenolic scaffold. Among the key techniques, direct functionalization of Csp2-H is a powerful tool, enabling the construction of new Csp2-C bonds in an economical and atomic manner. Herein we present and summarize the large plethora of direct Csp2-H functionalization methods that enables scaffold diversification of simple, unprotected phenols, leading to the formation of new Csp2-C bonds. In this review article, we intend to summarize the contributions that appeared in the literature mainly in the last 5 years dealing with the functionalization of unprotected phenols, both catalytic and non-catalytic. Our goal is to highlight the key findings and the ongoing challenges in the stimulating and growing research dedicated to the development of new protocols for the valorization of phenols.

Cyclic Hydrocarbon Frameworks Containing Two Bismuth Atoms: Towards 9,10-Dibismaanthracene

When bismuth atoms are incorporated into cyclic organic systems, this commonly goes along with strained or distorted molecular geometries, which can be exploited to modulate the physical and chemical properties of these compounds. In six-membered heterocycles, bismuth atoms are often accompanied by oxygen, sulfur or nitrogen as a second hetero-element. In this work, we present the first examples of six-membered rings, in which two CH units are replaced by BiX moieties (X=Cl, Br, I), resulting in dihydro-anthracene analogs. Their behavior in chemically reversible reduction reactions is explored, aiming at the generation of dibisma-anthracene (bismanthrene). Heterometallic compounds (Bi/Fe, Bi/Mn) are introduced as potential bismanthrene surrogates, as supported by bismanthrene-transfer to selenium. Analytical techniques used to investigate the reported compounds include NMR spectroscopy, high-resolution mass spectrometry, single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, and DFT calculations.

Development and Scale-Up of a New Sulfone-Based Bismacycle as a Universal Precursor for Bi(V)-Mediated Electrophilic Arylation

The scope and practical utility of bismuth(V)-mediated electrophilic arylation have been greatly improved by the recent development of user-friendly protocols based on modular bismacycle reagents. Here, we report the scalable synthesis of a new bench-stable bismacycle bromide and demonstrate that it can be used as a "universal precursor" in electrophilic arylation. Relative to established syntheses of related bismacycles, the new protocol benefits from improved step- and vessel-economy, reduced production time, and the complete elimination of cryogenic temperatures and undesirable solvents (Et2O and CH2Cl2). The synthesis is complemented by a robust, chromatography-free purification procedure that was developed by using design of experiments. We show that this process is highly reproducible at the 100 mmol scale, with two independent experiments giving 61 and 62% yields of isolated material. We anticipate that this efficient method for the synthesis of a new bismacycle precursor will expedite both (a) wider uptake of existing bismuth-mediated arylation methods by the synthetic community and (b) ongoing efforts to develop new bismuth-mediated transformations.

Hypervalent organobismuth complexes: pathways toward improved reactivity, catalysis, and applications

Hypervalent (three-center, four-electron) bonding in organobismuth complexes has been extensively studied due to its ability to affect molecular geometry, dynamic behavior, or to stabilize the ligand scaffold. This work addresses the effects of this bonding on reactivity, catalytic activity, redox processes, and its potential applications in biosciences, materials science, and small molecule activation.

Bismuth(III)-Catalyzed Oxidative Cross-Coupling of 3-Hydroxycarbazoles with Arenols under an Oxygen Atmosphere

A Bi(OTf)3-catalyzed oxidative cross-coupling reaction of 3-hydroxycarbazoles with arenols was developed under mild conditions. Both substrates were used in a 1:1 molar ratio in the presence of a catalytic amount of Bi(OTf)3. The reaction was carried out under an oxygen atmosphere at 30 °C to afford C1-symmetric hydroxybiaryls in good yields (up to 94%) with high chemo- and regioselectivity.

Oxidative Addition of Aryl Electrophiles into a Red-Light-Active Bismuthinidene

The oxidative addition of aryl electrophiles is a fundamental organometallic reaction widely applied in the field of transition metal chemistry and catalysis. However, the analogous version based on main group elements still remains largely underexplored. Here, we report the ability of a well-defined organobismuth(I) complex to undergo formal oxidative addition with a wide range of aryl electrophiles. The process is facilitated by the reactivity of both the ground and excited states of N,C,N-bismuthinidenes upon absorption of low-energy red light.

On the Barton Copper-Catalyzed C3-Arylation of Indoles using Triarylbismuth bis(trifluoroacetate) Reagents

We disclose herein our detailed investigation into the Barton copper-promoted C3-arylation of indoles using triarylbismuth bis(trifluoroacetates). The arylation of unsubstituted 1H-indole using Barton's conditions gave a low yield of the C3-arylated indole, along with small amounts of the product of double C2/C3-arylation and traces of the product of C2 arylation. On the contrary, the arylation of indoles blocked at the C2 position is highly efficient, affording the desired products of C3-arylation in good to excellent yields. The reaction operates under simple conditions, shows good substrate scope, excellent functional group compatibility, and allows the transfer of electron-neutral or deficient aryl groups. Computational studies propose a mechanism involving a trifluoroacetate-assisted C-H activation step.

Electrochemical synthesis of biaryls by reductive extrusion from N,N'-diarylureas

The synthesis of biaryl compounds by the transition-metal free coupling of arenes is an important contemporary challenge, aiming to avoid the toxicity and cost profiles associated with the metal catalysts commonly used in the synthesis of these pharmaceutically relevant motifs. In this paper, we describe an electrochemical approach to the synthesis of biaryls in which aniline derivatives are coupled through the formation and reduction of a temporary urea linkage. The conformational alignment of the arenes in the N,N'-diaryl urea intermediates promotes C-C bond formation following single-electron reduction. Our optimized conditions are suitable for the synthesis of a variety of biaryls, including sterically hindered examples carrying ortho-substituents, representing complementary reactivity to most metal catalysed methods.

Synthesis, Isolation, and Characterization of Two Cationic Organobismuth(II) Pincer Complexes Relevant in Radical Redox Chemistry

Herein, we report the synthesis, isolation, and characterization of two cationic organobismuth(II) compounds bearing N,C,N pincer frameworks, which model crucial intermediates in bismuth radical processes. X-ray crystallography uncovered a monomeric Bi(II) structure, while SQUID magnetometry in combination with NMR and EPR spectroscopy provides evidence for a paramagnetic S = 1/2 state. High-resolution multifrequency EPR at the X-, Q-, and W-band enable the precise assignment of the full g- and ²⁰⁹Bi A-tensors. Experimental data and DFT calculations reveal both complexes are metal-centered radicals with little delocalization onto the ligands.

meta-Selective C-H arylation of phenols via regiodiversion of electrophilic aromatic substitution

Electrophilic aromatic substitution is among the most widely used mechanistic manifolds in organic chemistry. Access to certain substitution patterns is, however, precluded by intrinsic and immutable substituent effects that ultimately restrict the diversity of the benzenoid chemical space. Here we demonstrate that the established regioselectivity of electrophilic aromatic substitution can be overcome simply by diverting the key σ-complex intermediate towards otherwise inaccessible substitution products. This 'regiodiversion' strategy is realized through the development of a general and concise method for the meta-selective C-H arylation of sterically congested phenols. Consisting of a Bi(V)-mediated electrophilic arylation and a subsequent aryl migration/rearomatization, our process is orthogonal to conventional C-H activation and cross-coupling approaches, and does not require prefunctionalization of the substrate. Mechanistically informed applications in synthesis showcase its utility as a versatile and enabling route to highly functionalized, contiguously substituted aromatic building blocks that defy synthesis via existing methods.

Pnictogen-Bridged Diphenyl Sulfones as Photoinduced Pnictogen Bond Forming Emission Motifs

In this study, pnictogen (Pn)-bridged diphenyl sulfones were synthesized as motifs for photoinduced dynamic rearrangement. The newly synthesized sulfones exhibited dual fluorescence at 298 K. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the longer-wavelength fluorescence was derived from the geometries after structural relaxation through photo-driven pnictogen bond formation between the O atom lone pair of the sulfonyl moiety and the antibonding orbital of the Pn-C bond. This is the first report on emission dynamics driven by pnictogen bond formation upon photoexcitation.

Umpolung Synthesis of Pyridyl Ethers by BiV -Mediated O-Arylation of Pyridones

We report that O-selective arylation of 2- and 4-pyridones with arylboronic acids is affected by a modular, bismacycle-based system. The utility of this umpolung approach to pyridyl ethers, which is complementary to conventional methods based on S_N Ar or cross-coupling, is demonstrated through the concise synthesis of Ki6783 and picolinafen, and the formal synthesis of cabozantib and golvatinib. Computational investigations reveal that arylation proceeds in a concerted fashion via a 5-membered transition state. The kinetically-controlled regioselectivity for O-arylation-which is reversed relative to previous Bi^V -mediated pyridone arylations-is attributed primarily to the geometric constraints imposed by the bismacyclic scaffold.

Mechanism of Alkyne Hydroarylation Catalyzed by (P,C)-Cyclometalated Au(III) Complexes

Over the last 5-10 years, gold(III) catalysis has developed rapidly. It often shows complementary if not unique features compared to gold(I) catalysis. While recent work has enabled major synthetic progress in terms of scope and efficiency, very little is yet known about the mechanism of Au(III)-catalyzed transformations and the relevant key intermediates have rarely been authenticated. Here, we report a detailed experimental/computational mechanistic study of the recently reported intermolecular hydroarylation of alkynes catalyzed by (P,C)-cyclometalated Au(III) complexes. The cationic (P,C)Au(OAc^F)⁺ complex (OAc^F = OCOCF₃) was authenticated by mass spectrometry (MS) in the gas phase and multi-nuclear NMR spectroscopy in solution at low temperatures. According to density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the OAc^F moiety is κ²-coordinated to gold in the ground state, but the corresponding κ¹-forms featuring a vacant coordination site sit only slightly higher in energy. Side-on coordination of the alkyne to Au(III) then promotes nucleophilic addition of the arene. The energy profiles for the reaction between trimethoxybenzene (TMB) and diphenylacetylene (DPA) were computed by DFT. The activation barrier is significantly lower for the outer-sphere pathway than for the alternative inner-sphere mechanism involving C-H activation of the arene followed by migratory insertion. The π-complex of DPA was characterized by MS. An unprecedented σ-arene Au(III) complex with TMB was also authenticated both in the gas phase and in solution. The cationic complexes [(P,C)Au(OAc^F)]⁺ and [(P,C)Au(OAc^F)(σ-TMB)]⁺ stand as active species and off-cycle resting state during catalysis, respectively. This study provides a rational basis for the further development of Au(III) catalysis based on π-activation.

Bismuth-Mediated α-Arylation of Acidic Diketones with ortho-Substituted Boronic Acids

The α-arylation of cyclic and fluoroalkyl 1,3-diketones is made challenging by the highly stabilized nature of the corresponding enolates, and is especially difficult for sterically demanding aryl partners. As a general solution to this problem, we report the Bi-mediated oxidative coupling of acidic diones and ortho-substituted arylboronic acids. Starting from a bench-stable bismacycle precursor, a sequence of B-to-Bi transmetallation, oxidation and C-C bond formation furnishes the arylated diones. Development of methodology that tolerates both sensitive functionality and steric demand is supported by interrogation of key reactive intermediates. Application of our strategy to cyclic diones enables the concise synthesis of important agrochemical intermediates which were previously prepared using toxic Pb reagents. This methodology also enables the first ever arylation of fluoroalkyl diones which, upon condensation with hydrazine, provides direct access to valuable fluoroalkyl pyrazoles.

Mechanism of the Aryl-F Bond-Forming Step from Bi(V) Fluorides

In this article, we describe a combined experimental and theoretical mechanistic investigation of the C(sp²)–F bond formation from neutral and cationic high-valent organobismuth(V) fluorides, featuring a dianionic bis-aryl sulfoximine ligand. An exhaustive assessment of the substitution pattern in the ligand, the sulfoximine, and the reactive aryl on neutral triarylbismuth(V) difluorides revealed that formation of dimeric structures in solution promotes facile Ar–F bond formation. Noteworthy, theoretical modeling of reductive elimination from neutral bismuth(V) difluorides agrees with the experimentally determined kinetic and thermodynamic parameters. Moreover, the addition of external fluoride sources leads to inactive octahedral anionic Bi(V) trifluoride salts, which decelerate reductive elimination. On the other hand, a parallel analysis for cationic bismuthonium fluorides revealed the crucial role of tetrafluoroborate anion as fluoride source. Both experimental and theoretical analyses conclude that C–F bond formation occurs through a low-energy five-membered transition-state pathway, where the F anion is delivered to a C(sp²) center, from a BF₄ anion, reminiscent of the Balz–Schiemann reaction. The knowledge gathered throughout the investigation permitted a rational assessment of the key parameters of several ligands, identifying the simple sulfone-based ligand family as an improved system for the stoichiometric and catalytic fluorination of arylboronic acid derivatives.

Catalytic Bismuth(V)-Mediated Oxidation of Hydrazones into Diazo Compounds

A new bismuth(V) oxidative catalytic system has been developed and applied for the conversion of hydrazones into diazo compounds. With the use of low catalytic amounts of Ph₃Bi and AcOH with NaBO₃·H₂O as a terminal oxidant, the in situ formation of Ph₃Bi(OAc)₂ is capable of oxidizing hydrazones in excellent yields. The reaction was applied for the synthesis of diazocarbonyls and 2,2,2-trifluoromethyl diazoalkanes in good to excellent yields.

Visible-light-driven C(sp2)-H arylation of phenols with arylbromides enabled by electron donor-acceptor excitation

We have developed a catalyst-free visible-light-driven C(sp²)-H arylation of unprotected phenols with arylbromides to give 2-arylated phenols. This reaction proceeds through the excitation of an electron donor-acceptor complex between a phenolate and an arylbromide, electron transfer, and debrominative C(sp²)-C(sp²) coupling.

Bismuth Redox Catalysis: An Emerging Main-Group Platform for Organic Synthesis

Bismuth has recently been shown to be able to maneuver between different oxidation states, enabling access to unique redox cycles that can be harnessed in the context of organic synthesis. Indeed, various catalytic Bi redox platforms have been discovered and revealed emerging opportunities in the field of main group redox catalysis. The goal of this perspective is to provide an overview of the synthetic methodologies that have been developed to date, which capitalize on the Bi redox cycling. Recent catalytic methods via low-valent Bi(II)/Bi(III), Bi(I)/Bi(III), and high-valent Bi(III)/Bi(V) redox couples are covered as well as their underlying mechanisms and key intermediates. In addition, we illustrate different design strategies stabilizing low-valent and high-valent bismuth species, and highlight the characteristic reactivity of bismuth complexes, compared to the lighter p-block and d-block elements. Although it is not redox catalysis in nature, we also discuss a recent example of non-Lewis acid, redox-neutral Bi(III) catalysis proceeding through catalytic organometallic steps. We close by discussing opportunities and future directions in this emerging field of catalysis. We hope that this Perspective will provide synthetic chemists with guiding principles for the future development of catalytic transformations employing bismuth.

Unveiling the origin of the chemoselectivity of bismacycle-mediated C–H arylation of phenols: from mechanism concept to new coupling design

DFT calculations for the bismacycle-catalyzed C–H arylation of phenols explain the origin of high chemoselectivity. The reducive elimination is polar, which allows the design of new coupling modes.

Cu-Catalyzed Synthesis of Benzoxazole with Phenol and Cyclic Oxime

A Cu-catalyzed straightforward synthesis of benzoxazoles from free phenols and cyclic oxime esters is reported. The mild reaction conditions tolerate various electron-withdrawing and electron-donating functional groups on both substrates, affording benzoxazoles in moderate to good yields. With this protocol, large-scale syntheses of Ezutromid and Flunoxaprofe in one or two steps are demonstrated. A catalytic mechanism, which includes Cu-catalyzed amination via inner-sphere electron transfer and consequent annulation, is proposed.

CH Activation of Cationic Bismuth Amides: Heteroaromaticity, Derivatization, and Lewis Acidity

Cationization of Bi(NPh₂)₃ has recently been reported to allow access to single- and double-CH activation reactions, followed by selective transformation of Bi-C into C-X functional groups (X = electrophile). Here we show that this approach can successfully be transferred to a range of bismuth amides with two aryl groups at the nitrogen, Bi(NR^aryl₂)₃. Exchange of one nitrogen-bound aryl group for an alkyl substituent gave the first example of a homoleptic bismuth amide with a mixed aryl/alkyl substitution pattern at the nitrogen, Bi(NPhiPr)₃. This compound is susceptible to selective N-N radical coupling in its neutral form and also undergoes selective CH activation when transformed into a cationic species. The second CH activation is blocked due to the absence of a second aryl moiety at nitrogen. The Lewis acidity of neutral bismuth amides is compared with that of cationic species "[Bi(aryl)(amide)(L)_n]⁺" and "[Bi(aryl)₂(L)_n]⁺" based on the (modified) Gutmann-Beckett method (L = tetrahydrofuran or pyridine). The heteroaromatic character of [Bi(C₆H₃R)₂NH(triflate)] compounds, which are iso-valence-electronic with anthracene, is investigated by theoretical methods. Analytical methods used in this work include nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, mass spectrometry, and density functional theory calculations.

Cross-Coupling through Ag(I)/Ag(III) Redox Manifold

In ample variety of transformations, the presence of silver as an additive or co-catalyst is believed to be innocuous for the efficiency of the operating metal catalyst. Even though Ag additives are required often as coupling partners, oxidants or halide scavengers, its role as a catalytically competent species is widely neglected in cross-coupling reactions. Most likely, this is due to the erroneously assumed incapacity of Ag to undergo 2e^- redox steps. Definite proof is herein provided for the required elementary steps to accomplish the oxidative trifluoromethylation of arenes through Ag^I /Ag^III redox catalysis (i. e. CEL coupling), namely: i) easy Ag^I /Ag^III 2e^- oxidation mediated by air; ii) bpy/phen ligation to Ag^III ; iii) boron-to-Ag^III aryl transfer; and iv) ulterior reductive elimination of benzotrifluorides from an [aryl-Ag^III -CF₃ ] fragment. More precisely, an ultimate entry and full characterization of organosilver(III) compounds [K]⁺ [Ag^III (CF₃ )₄ ]^- (K-1), [(bpy)Ag^III (CF₃ )₃ ] (2) and [(phen)Ag^III (CF₃ )₃ ] (3), is described. The utility of 3 in cross-coupling has been showcased unambiguously, and a large variety of arylboron compounds was trifluoromethylated via [Ag^III (aryl)(CF₃ )₃ ]^- intermediates. This work breaks with old stereotypes and misconceptions regarding the inability of Ag to undergo cross-coupling by itself.

Fluorine Labeling of ortho-Phenylenes to Facilitate Conformational Analysis

¹H NMR spectroscopy is a powerful tool for the conformational analysis of ortho-phenylene foldamers in solution. However, as o-phenylenes are integrated into ever more complex systems, we are reaching the limits of what can be analyzed by ¹H- and ¹³C-based NMR techniques. Here, we explore fluorine labeling of o-phenylene oligomers for analysis by ¹⁹F NMR spectroscopy. Two series of fluorinated oligomers have been synthesized. Optimization of monomers for Suzuki coupling enables an efficient stepwise oligomer synthesis. The oligomers all adopt well-folded geometries in solution, as determined by ¹H NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. ¹⁹F NMR experiments complement these methods well. The resolved singlets of one-dimensional ¹⁹F{¹H} spectra are very useful for determining relative conformer populations. The additional information from two-dimensional ¹⁹F NMR spectra is also clearly valuable when making ¹H assignments. The comparison of ¹⁹F isotropic shielding predictions to experimental chemical shifts is not, however, currently sufficient by itself to establish o-phenylene geometries.

A new C-anionic tripodal ligand 2-{bis(benzothiazolyl)(methoxy)methyl}phenyl and its bismuth complexes

A new tripodal C-anionic ligand, 2-{bis(benzothiazolyl)(methoxy)methyl}phenyl (L), was stably generated by the reaction of the ligand precursor (L'), the corresponding bromide (2-BrC6H4)(MeO)C(C7H4NS)2 (C7H4NS = 2-benzothiazolyl), with nBuLi at -104 °C in the presence of TMEDA (N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine). The ligand lithium salt reacted with BiCl3 to give a 2 : 1 complex L2BiCl. A 1 : 1 complex LBiCl2 was obtained in good yield by the redistribution reaction between L2BiCl and BiCl3. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the ligand L coordinated in an expected κ3-C,N,N' coordination mode in LBiCl2, while it coordinated in κ3-C,N,O and κ2-C,O coordination modes in L2BiCl. The ligand precursor reacted with BiX3 (X = Cl, Br) to give 1 : 1 complexes L'BiX3 and was found to act as a neutral tripodal C(π),N,N-ligand.

(Trifluoromethoxy)Phenylboronic Acids: Structures, Properties, and Antibacterial Activity

Three isomers of (trifluoromethoxy)phenylboronic acids were studied in the context of their physicochemical, structural, antimicrobial and spectroscopic properties. They were characterized by ¹H, ¹³C, ¹¹B and ¹⁹F NMR spectroscopy. The acidity of all the isomers was evaluated by both spectrophotometric and potentiometric titrations. The introduction of the -OCF₃ group influences the acidity, depending, however, on the position of a substituent, with the ortho isomer being the least acidic. Molecular and crystal structures of ortho and para isomers were determined by the single crystal XRD method. Hydrogen bonded dimers are the basic structural motives of the investigated molecules in the solid state. In the case of the ortho isomer, intramolecular hydrogen bond with the -OCF₃ group is additionally formed, weaker, however, than that in the analogous -OCH₃ derivative, which has been determined by both X-Ray measurements as well as theoretical DFT calculations. Docking studies showed possible interactions of the investigated compounds with LeuRS of Escherichia coli. Finally, the antibacterial potency of studied boronic acids in vitro were evaluated against Escherichia coli and Bacillus cereus.

Carbodicarbene Bismaalkene Cations: Unravelling the Complexities of Carbene versus Carbone in Heavy Pnictogen Chemistry

We report a combined experimental and theoretical study on the first examples of carbodicarbene (CDC)-stabilized bismuth complexes, which feature low-coordinate cationic bismuth centers with C=Bi multiple-bond character. Monocations [(CDC)Bi(Ph)Cl][SbF6 ] (8) and [(CDC)BiBr2 (THF)2 ][SbF6 ] (11), dications [(CDC)Bi(Ph)][SbF6 ]2 (9) and [(CDC)BiBr(THF)3 ][NTf2 ]2 (12), and trication [(CDC)2 Bi][NTf2 ]3 (13) have been synthesized via sequential halide abstractions from (CDC)Bi(Ph)Cl2 (7) and (CDC)BiBr3 (10). Notably, the dications and trication exhibit C ⇉ Bi double dative bonds and thus represent unprecedented bismaalkene cations. The synthesis of these species highlights a unique non-reductive route to C-Bi π-bonding character. The CDC-[Bi] complexes (7-13) were compared with related NHC-[Bi] complexes (1, 3-6) and show substantially different structural properties. Indeed, the CDC ligand has a remarkable influence on the overall stability of the resulting low-coordinate Bi complexes, suggesting that CDC is a superior ligand to NHC in heavy pnictogen chemistry.

Benzene-Free Synthesis of Multisubstituted Catechol via Oxidative Dearomatic Reorganization

A benzene-free synthesis of multisubstituted catechol via an oxidative dearomatic reorganization is reported. This reaction tolerated a wide spectrum of functionalities, which could be applied in the synthesis of an electron-deficient arene-conjugated catechol that is difficult to access via biomimetic oxidative coupling. In addition, a diversification-oriented transformation that leveraged the versatile catechol afforded a series of functionality-rich products.

Main Group Redox Catalysis of Organopnictogens: Vertical Periodic Trends and Emerging Opportunities in Group 15

A growing number of organopnictogen redox catalytic methods have emerged-especially within the past 10 years-that leverage the plentiful reversible two-electron redox chemistry within Group 15. The goal of this Perspective is to provide readers the context to understand the dramatic developments in organopnictogen catalysis over the past decade with an eye toward future development. An exposition of the fundamental differences in the atomic structure and bonding of the pnictogens, and thus the molecular electronic structure of organopnictogen compounds, is presented to establish the backdrop against which organopnictogen redox reactivity-and ultimately catalysis-is framed. A deep appreciation of these underlying periodic principles informs an understanding of the differing modes of organopnictogen redox catalysis and evokes the key challenges to the field moving forward. We close by addressing forward-looking directions likely to animate this area in the years to come. What new catalytic manifolds can be developed through creative catalyst and reaction design that take advantage of the intrinsic redox reactivity of the pnictogens to drive new discoveries in catalysis?

Bismuth(V)-Mediated C–H Arylation of Phenols and Naphthols

We recently reported a general and practical strategy for the Bi(V)-mediated C–H arylation of phenols and naphthols. Our telescoped protocol proceeds via transmetallation from readily available arylboronic acids to a stable Bi(III) precursor, oxidation to a reactive Bi(V) intermediate, and subsequent ortho-selective phenol arylation. The process exhibits broad scope with respect to both components and tolerates functionality that is incompatible with conventional cross-coupling methods. Preliminary investigations provide insight into the mechanism of each key reaction step.

Highly Regioselective Direct C-H Arylation: Facile Construction of Symmetrical Dithienophthalimide-Based π-Conjugated Molecules for Optoelectronics

Controllable direct C-H arylation with high regioselectivity is highly desirable yet remains a formidable challenge. Herein, a facile regioselective direct C-H arylation is developed for efficient construction of a variety of symmetrical dithienophthalimide-based π-conjugated molecules. The resulting methodology is applicable to a wide range of substrates, from electron-rich units to electron-deficient units with large steric end groups. Aryl halides have been confirmed to be able to couple with dithienophthalimide (DTI) via direct C-H arylation, showing high regioselectivity. Varying the functional end groups onto the DTI core has been demonstrated to fine tune the emission colors to cover most of the visible spectra. The results suggest a facile strategy towards highly selective direct C-H arylation, opening the prospects towards efficient construction of π-conjugated molecules for various potential optoelectronic applications.

Bismuth-Catalyzed Oxidative Coupling of Arylboronic Acids with Triflate and Nonaflate Salts

Herein we present a Bi-catalyzed cross-coupling of arylboronic acids with perfluoroalkyl sulfonate salts based on a Bi(III)/Bi(V) redox cycle. An electron-deficient sulfone ligand proved to be key for the successful implementation of this protocol, which allows the unusual construction of C(sp²)–O bonds using commercially available NaOTf and KONf as coupling partners. Preliminary mechanistic studies as well as theoretical investigations reveal the intermediacy of a highly electrophilic Bi(V) species, which rapidly eliminates phenyl triflate.
