Switching the magnetic hysteresis of an [Feii-NC-Wv]-based coordination polymer by photoinduced reversible spin crossover

Spin-State Control in Dysprosium(III) Metallacrown Magnets via Thioacetal Modification

Integrating controllable spin states into single-molecule magnets (SMMs) enables precise manipulation of magnetic interactions at a molecular level, but remains a synthetic challenge. Herein, we developed a 3d-4f metallacrown (MC) magnet [DyNi5(quinha)5(Clsal)2(py)8](ClO4) ⋅ 4H2O (H2quinha=quinaldichydroxamic acid, HClsal=5-chlorosalicylaldehyde) wherein a square planar NiII is stabilized by chemical stacking. Thioacetal modification was employed via post-synthetic ligand substitutions and yielded [DyNi5(quinha)5(Clsaldt)2(py)8](ClO4) ⋅ 3H2O (HClsaldt=4-chloro-2-(1,3-dithiolan-2-yl)phenol). Thanks to the additional ligations of thioacetal onto the NiII site, coordination-induced spin state switching (CISSS) took place with spin state altering from low-spin S=0 to high-spin S=1. The synergy of CISSS effect and magnetic interactions results in distinct energy splitting and magnetic dynamics. Magnetic studies indicate prominent enhancement of reversal barrier from 57 cm-1 to 423 cm-1, along with hysteresis opening and an over 200-fold increment in coercive field at 2 K. Ab initio calculations provide deeper insights into the exchange models and rationalize the relaxation/tunnelling pathways. These results demonstrate here provide a fire-new perspective in modulating the magnetization relaxation via the incorporation of controllable spin states and magnetic interactions facilitated by the CISSS approach.

Phase Transition Control in Molecular Solids via Complementarity of Hydrogen-Bond Strength

Phase transitions in molecular solids involve synergistic changes in chemical and electronic structures, leading to diversification in physical and chemical properties. Despite the pivotal role of hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) in many phase-transition materials, it is rare and challenging to chemically regulate the dynamics and to elucidate the structure-property relationship. Here, four high-spin CoII compounds were isolated and systematically investigated by modifying the ligand terminal groups (X=S, Se) and substituents (Y=Cl, Br). S-Cl and Se-Br undergo a reversible structural phase transition near room temperature, triggering the rotation of 15-crown-5 guests and the swing between syn- and anti-conformation of NCX- ligands, accompanied by switchable magnetism. Conversely, S-Br and Se-Cl retain stability in ordered and disordered phases, respectively. H-bonds geometric analysis and ab initio calculations reveal that the electronegativity of X and Y affects the strength of NY-ap-H⋅⋅⋅X interactions. Entropy-driven structural phase transitions occur when the H-bond strength is appropriate; otherwise, the phase stays unchanged if it is too strong or weak. This work highlights a phase transition driven by H-bond strength complementarity - pairing strong acceptor with weak donor and vice versa, which offers a straightforward and effective approach for designing phase-transition molecular solids from a chemical perspective.

Synergism of Light-Induced [4 + 4] Cycloaddition and Electron Transfer Toward Switchable Photoluminescence and Single-Molecule Magnet Behavior in a Dy4 Cubane

Molecular materials possessing switchable magneto-optical properties are of great interest due to their potential applications in spintronics and molecular devices. However, switching their photoluminescence (PL) and single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior via light-induced structural changes still constitutes a formidable challenge. Here, a series of cubane structures were synthesized via self-assembly of 9-anthracene carboxylic acid (HAC) and rare-earth ions. All complexes exhibited obvious photochromic phenomena and complete PL quenching upon Xe lamp irradiation, which were realized via the synergistic effect of photogenerated radicals and [4 + 4] photocycloaddition of the AC components. The quenched PL showed the largest fluorescence intensity change (99.72%) in electron-transfer photochromic materials. A reversible decoloration process was realized via mechanical grinding, which is unexpectedly in the electron-transfer photochromic materials. Importantly, an SMM behavior of the Dy analog was observed after room-temperature irradiation due to the photocycloaddition of AC ligands and the photogenerated stable radicals changed the electrostatic ligand field and magnetic coupling. Moreover, based on the remarkably photochromic and photoluminescent properties of these compounds, 2 demos were applied to support their application in information anti-counterfeiting and inkless printing. This work, for the first time utilizing the simultaneous modulation of photocycloaddition and photogenerated radicals in one system, realizes complete PL quenching and light-induced SMM behavior, providing a dynamical switch for the construction of multifunctional polymorphic materials with optical response and optical storage devices.

Lattice solvent- and substituent-dependent spin-crossover in isomeric iron(II) complexes

Spin-state switching in iron(II) complexes composed of ligands featuring moderate ligand-field strength-for example, 2,6-bi(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine (BPP)-is dependent on many factors. Herein, we show that spin-state switching in isomeric iron(II) complexes composed of BPP-based ligands-ethyl 2,6-bis(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)isonicotinate (BPP-COOEt, L1) and (2,6-di(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)pyridin-4-yl)methylacetate (BPP-CH2OCOMe, L2)-is dependent on the nature of the substituent at the BPP skeleton. Bi-stable spin-state switching-with a thermal hysteresis width (ΔT1/2) of 44 K and switching temperature (T1/2) = 298 K in the first cycle-is observed for complex 1·CH3CN composed of L1 and BF4- counter anions. Conversely, the solvent-free isomeric counterpart of 1·CH3CN-complex 2a, composed of L2 and BF4- counter anions-was trapped in the high-spin (HS) state. For one of the polymorphs of complex 2b·CH3CN-2b·CH3CN-Y, Y denotes yellow colour of the crystals-composed of L2 and ClO4- counter anions, a gradual and non-hysteretic SCO is observed with T1/2 = 234 K. Complexes 1·CH3CN and 2b·CH3CN-Y also underwent light-induced spin-state switching at 5 K due to the light-induced excited spin-state trapping (LIESST) effect. Structures of the low-spin (LS) and HS forms of complex 1·CH3CN revealed that spin-state switching goes hand-in-hand with pronounced distortion of the trans-N{pyridyl}-Fe-N{pyridyl} angle (ϕ), whereas such distortion is not observed for 2b·CH3CN-Y. This observation points that distortion is one of the factors making the spin-state switching of 1·CH3CN hysteretic in the solid state. The observation of bi-stable spin-state switching with T1/2 centred at room temperature for 1·CH3CN indicates that technologically relevant spin-state switching profiles based on mononuclear iron(II) complexes can be obtained.

Synergetic Responses of Multiple Functions Induced by Phase Transition in Molecular Materials

Materials that integrate magnetism, electricity and luminescence can not only improve the operational efficiency of devices, but also potentially generate new functions through their coupling. Therefore, multifunctional synergistic effects have broad application prospects in fields such as optoelectronic devices, information storage and processing, and quantum computing. However, in the research field of molecular materials, there are few reports on the synergistic multifunctional properties. The main reason is that there is insufficient awareness of how to obtain such material. In this brief review, we summarized the molecular materials with this characteristic. The structural phase transition of substances will cause changes in their physical properties, as the electronic configurations of the active unit in different structural phases are different. Therefore, we will classify and describe the multifunctional synergistic complexes based on the structural factors that cause the first-order phase transition of the complexes. This enables us to quickly screen complexes with synergistic responses to these properties through structural phase transitions, providing ideas for studying the synergistic response of physical properties in molecular materials.

Integrating spin-dependent emission and dielectric switching in FeII catenated metal-organic frameworks

Mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs) including famous catenanes show switchable physical properties and attract continuous research interest due to their potential application in molecular devices. The advantages of using spin crossover (SCO) materials here are enormous, allowing for control through diverse stimuli and highly specific functions, and enabling the transfer of the internal dynamics of MIMs from solution to solid state, leading to macroscopic applications. Herein, we report the efficient self-assembly of catenated metal-organic frameworks (termed catena-MOFs) induced by stacking interactions, through the combination of rationally selected flexible and conjugated naphthalene diimide-based bis-pyridyl ligand (BPND), [MI(CN)2]- (M = Ag or Au) and Fe2+ in a one-step strategy. The obtained bimetallic Hofmann-type SCO-MOFs [FeII(BPND){Ag(CN)2}2]·3CHCl3 (1Ag) and [FeII(BPND{Au(CN)2}2]·2CHCl3·2H2O (1Au) possess a unique three-dimensional (3D) catena-MOF constructed from the polycatenation of two-dimensional (2D) layers with hxl topology. Both complexes undergo thermal- and light-induced SCO. Significantly, abnormal increases in the maximum emission intensity and dielectric constant can be detected simultaneously with the switching of spin states. This research opens up SCO-actuated bistable MIMs that afford dual functionality of coupled fluorescence emission and dielectricity.

Optical Phenomena in Molecule-Based Magnetic Materials

Since the last century, we have witnessed the development of molecular magnetism which deals with magnetic materials based on molecular species, i.e., organic radicals and metal complexes. Among them, the broadest attention was devoted to molecule-based ferro-/ferrimagnets, spin transition materials, including those exploring electron transfer, molecular nanomagnets, such as single-molecule magnets (SMMs), molecular qubits, and stimuli-responsive magnetic materials. Their physical properties open the application horizons in sensors, data storage, spintronics, and quantum computation. It was found that various optical phenomena, such as thermochromism, photoswitching of magnetic and optical characteristics, luminescence, nonlinear optical and chiroptical effects, as well as optical responsivity to external stimuli, can be implemented into molecule-based magnetic materials. Moreover, the fruitful interactions of these optical effects with magnetism in molecule-based materials can provide new physical cross-effects and multifunctionality, enriching the applications in optical, electronic, and magnetic devices. This Review aims to show the scope of optical phenomena generated in molecule-based magnetic materials, including the recent advances in such areas as high-temperature photomagnetism, optical thermometry utilizing SMMs, optical addressability of molecular qubits, magneto-chiral dichroism, and opto-magneto-electric multifunctionality. These findings are discussed in the context of the types of optical phenomena accessible for various classes of molecule-based magnetic materials.

Reversible light-induced spin state switching in a dinuclear Fe(II) spin crossover complex

A dinuclear Fe(II) spin crossover (SCO) complex with the formula [Fe2L5(NCS)4]·2DMF·2H2O (1) was synthesised from 1-naphthylimino-1,2,4-triazole (L). Complex 1 exhibits an incomplete thermally induced spin transition with a transition temperature T1/2 of 95 K and a thermally trapped metastable high-spin state at low temperatures. Furthermore, it undergoes a reversible light-induced spin crossover by alternate irradiation with 532 and 808 nm lasers.

Light-Induced, Structural Matrix Guided Stepwise Spin-State Switching in 3d-5d Molecular Assembly

A new iron(II) molecular complex {[W(CN)8][Fe(bik*)3]2}BF4·7H2O·1.5CH3OH (1.7H2O·1.5CH3OH) was synthesized using a versatile octacyanotungstate(V) building block and N-donor bidentate ligand (bik* = bis(1-ethyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)ketone) and detailed characterizations were carried out. The crystal structure of 1.7H2O·1.5CH3OH is composed of an ionic salt from one anionic [W(CN)8]3- unit, two isolated cationic [Fe(bik*)3]2+ units, and one BF4- counteranion in the asymmetric unit. Magnetic studies of 1.7H2O·1.5CH3OH display interesting two-step reversible thermo-induced spin-state switching and the partially desolvated form 1.7H2O shows a photomagnetic effect at low temperatures. Additionally, the physical properties of 1.7H2O·1.5CH3OH were compared with the monomeric unit of {[Fe(bik*)3]2}·4ReO4·H2O (2.H2O) and detailed photophysical investigations were also performed to study the effect of a structural matrix {[W(CN)8]3- and ReO4- unit} on the spin-state switching properties of the [Fe(bik*)3]2+ unit in both systems (1.7H2O·1.5CH3OH and 2.H2O).

Cyanometallic charge engineering in spin crossover metal-organic frameworks

In this study, we successfully synthesize cationic/neutral/anionic inverse-Hofmann-type spin crossover (SCO) frameworks with 1,1,2,2-tetrakis(4-(pyridine-4-yl)phenyl)-ethene ligand by means of cyanometallic charge engineering strategy. The cationic and neutral frameworks exhibit single-step thermally induced spin transition behaviors, while the SCO capability of anionic framework can be aroused by partial desolvation. This strategy provides a new idea to construct ionic SCO frameworks and extends the toolkit for SCO materials.

Two-Dimensional Spin-Crossover Molecular Solid Solutions with Tunable Transition Temperatures across 90 K

Spin-crossover (SCO) materials exhibit remarkable potential as bistable switches in molecular devices. However, the spin transition temperatures (Tc) of known compounds are unable to cover the entire ambient temperature spectrum, largely limiting their practical utility. This study reports an exemplary two-dimensional SCO solid solution system, [FeIII(H0.5LCl)2-2x(H0.5LF)2x]·H2O (H0.5LX = 5-X-2-hydroxybenzylidene-hydrazinecarbothioamide, X = F or Cl, x = 0 to 1), in which the adjacent layers are adhered via hydrogen bonding. Notably, the Tc of this system can be fine-tuned across 90 K (227-316 K) in a linear manner by modulating the fraction x of the LF ligand. Elevating x results in strengthened hydrogen bonding between adjacent layers, which leads to enhanced intermolecular interactions between adjacent SCO molecules. Single-crystal diffraction analysis and periodic density functional theory calculations revealed that such a special kind of alteration in interlayer interactions strengthens the FeIIIN2O2S2 ligand field and corresponding SCO energy barrier, consequently resulting in increased Tc. This work provides a new pathway for tuning the Tc of SCO materials through delicate manipulation of molecular interactions, which could expand the application of bistable molecular solids to a much wider temperature regime.

3 nm-wide Cyanometallate Fe-Co Tape Exhibiting Single-Chain Magnet Behavior

Treatment of Co(OTf)2·6H2O, Li[(pzTp)FeIII(CN)3], and H3PMo12O40·nH2O in protic solvents afforded two structurally related Fe-Co cyanometallate complexes: [{(pzTp)Fe(CN)3}3Co3(MeOH)10][PMo12O40]·H2O·11MeOH (1, pzTp- = tetra(pyrazolyl)borate) and {[(pzTp)Fe(CN)3]4Co3(MeOH)5(H2O)3}n[HPMo12O40]n·3 nMeOH·6.5nH2O (2). Complex 1 consists of a cyanide-bridged hexanuclear [Fe3Co3] cage, characterized by the fused conjunction of two mutually perpendicular trigonal bipyramids (TBPs, [Fe2Co3] and [Co2Fe3]), while complex 2 showcases an intricate cyanide-bridged Fe-Co tape comprising a central chain backbone of vertex-sharing [Fe2Co3] TBPs alongside peripheral [Fe2Co2] squares. Complex 2 is among the widest one-dimensional coordination assemblies characterized by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction technique. Magnetic studies revealed that complex 2 behaved as a single chain magnet with an effective energy barrier (Ueff/kB) of 46.8 K. Our findings highlight the possibilities in the development of cyanometallate-POM hybrid materials with captivating magnetic properties.

A novel style of 2D Hofmann-type coordination polymer incorporated trigonal prismatic coordination geometry with bidentate co-ligands

A novel 2D Hofmann-type framework was prepared with a bidentate co-ligand, 5,5'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridyl (dmbpy), which forces the curvature of the layer. X-ray diffraction analysis demonstrated that the coordination polymers, MnII(dmbpy)[MVN(CN)4] (MV = Mn (1) and Cr (2)), formed a considerably corrugated 2D cyanide-bridged network with a quasi C4v symmetric building unit, [CrVN(CN)4]2-, and trigonal prismatic coordination geometry around MnII. Compound 2 demonstrated a metamagnetic-like ordering at 14.4 K, caused by the intra- and inter-layer antiferromagnetic interactions between CrV (S = 1/2) and MnII (S = 5/2), and a weak ferromagnetic behaviour at 2 K reflecting the single-ion anisotropy of CrV and structural anisotropy.

Bimetallic Coordination Polymers: Synthesis and Applications in Biosensing and Biomedicine

Bimetallic coordination polymers (CPs) have two different metal ions as connecting nodes in their polymer structure. The synthesis methods of bimetallic CPs are mainly categorized into the one-pot method and post-synthesis modifications according to various needs. Compared with monometallic CPs, bimetallic CPs have synergistic effects and excellent properties, such as higher gas adsorption rate, more efficient catalytic properties, stronger luminescent properties, and more stable loading platforms, which have been widely applied in the fields of gas adsorption, catalysis, energy storage as well as conversion, and biosensing. In recent years, the study of bimetallic CPs synergized with cancer drugs and functional nanomaterials for the therapy of cancer has increasingly attracted the attention of scientists. This review presents the research progress of bimetallic CPs in biosensing and biomedicine in the last five years and provides a perspective for their future development.

Fine-tuning of thermally induced SCO behaviors of trinuclear cyanido-bridged complexes by regulating the electron donating ability of CCN-terminal fragments

To achieve fine regulation of FeII SCO behavior, a series of trinuclear cyanido-bridged complexes trans-[CpMen(dppe)MII(CN)]2[Fe1II(abpt)2](OTf)2 (1-4) (1, M = Fe2 and n = 1; 2, M = Fe2 and n = 4; 3, M = Fe2 and n = 5; 4, M = Ru and n = 5; CpMen = alkyl cyclopentadienyl with n = 1, 4, 5; dppe = 1,2-bis-(diphenylphosphino)ethane; abpt = 4-amino-3,5-bis-(pyridin-2-yl)-1,2,4-triazole and OTf = CF3SO3-) were synthesized and fully characterized by using elemental analysis, X-ray crystallography, magnetic measurements, variable-temperature IR spectroscopy and Mössbauer spectroscopy. It is worth mentioning that different from many mononuclear Fe(abpt)2X2 (X = NCS, NCSe, N(CN)2, C(CN)3, (NC)2CC(OCH3)C(CN)2, (NC)2CC(OC2H5)C(CN)2, C16SO3 and Cl) complexes with more than one polymorph, only one polycrystalline form was found in complexes 1-4. Moreover, the thermally induced SCO behaviors of these four complexes are independent of intermolecular π-π interactions. The electron-donating ability of the CCN-terminal fragment of CpMen(dppe)MIICN can be flexibly regulated by changing the methyl number (n) of the cyclopentadiene ligand or metal ion type (MII). These investigations indicate that the electron-donating ability of the CCN-terminal fragment has an influence on the SCO behavior of Fe1II. The spin transition temperature (T1/2) of the complexes decreases with the increase of the electron-donating ability of the fragment CpMen(dppe)MII. This study provides a new strategy to predict and precisely regulate the behaviors of SCO complexes.

Electron transfer coupled spin transition in cyano-bridged mixed-valence {FeIII2FeII2} molecular squares

The research on electron transfer coupled spin transition regulating the valence state and spin state transition of metal ions is promising and challenging. Herein, we report a cyano-bridged {FeIII2FeII2} molecular square complex, {[Fe(Tp)(CN)3]2 [Fe(bnbpen)]2}(ClO4)2·8CH3OH (1·8CH3OH, bnbpen = N,N'-bis-(2-naphthylmethyl)-N,N'-bis(2-picolayl)-ethylenediamine), and its free of solvents form (1). Combined single-crystal X-ray diffraction, temperature-dependent infrared (IR) spectra, magnetic measurements, and Mössbauer spectra reveal that 1·8CH3OH and 1 exhibit reversible one-step and two-step electron transfer coupled spin transition (ETCST) with temperature change, between the low-temperature state {FeII,LS(μ-CN)FeIII,LS}2 (LS = low spin, HS = high spin) and the high-temperature state {FeIII,LS(μ-CN)FeII,HS}2, respectively.

Modulation of single-chain magnet behaviour in a heterometallic Fe2Co cyanide-bridged 2D sheet

A cyanide-bridged Fe2Co 2D sheet exhibiting electron transfer coupled spin transition (ETCST) with co-existence of magnetic ordering below 50 K is reported. The complex exhibits single-chain magnet behaviour where the uncoordinated water molecules act as an exchange-breaking impurity by allowing only a fraction of the molecule to undergo a spin state change. The paramagnetic centres prevail throughout the chain on desolvation, thereby increasing the number of correlated units in the chain.

The influence of light on the field-induced magnetization dynamics of two Er(III) coordination polymers with different halogen substituents

Photocontrolled magnetic properties are fundamental for the applications of molecular magnets, which have the features of high time and space resolution; however, such magnetic properties are highly challenging to be achieved owing to the weak light-matter interactions. Herein, the influence of in situ light irradiation on the field-induced magnetization dynamics of two Er(III) coordination polymers 1 and 2 with the same coordination skeletons but different halogen substituents was studied. 1 and 2, and their in situ photoexcited products 1a and 2a, display field-induced magnetization dynamics based on Orbach and/or Raman processes. The magnetization dynamics are fine-modulated by the synergetic effect of light irradiation and a ligand substituent, due to the charge re-distribution of the excited states of the ligand.

CO2-Sensitive Porous Magnet: Antiferromagnet Creation from a Paramagnetic Charge-Transfer Layered Metal-Organic Framework

Porous magnets that undergo a magnetic phase transition in response to gaseous adsorbates are desirable for the development of sustainable sensing and memory devices. Familiar gases such as O2 and CO2 are one class of target adsorbates because of their close association with life sciences and environmental issues; however, it is not easy to develop magnetic devices that respond to these ubiquitous gases. To date, only three examples of gas-responsive magnetic phase transitions have been demonstrated: (i) from a ferrimagnet to an antiferromagnet, (ii) its vice versa (i.e., change of magnetic phase), and (iii) from a ferrimagnet to a paramagnet (i.e., erasure of the magnetic phase). However, the creation of a magnet, meaning the change from a nonmagnet to a magnet by O2 or CO2 gas adsorption and magnetic switching by this phenomenon have not yet been explored. Herein, we report a CO2-induced antiferromagnet modified from a paramagnetic charge-flexible layered compound, [{Ru2(2,4-F2PhCO2)4}2TCNQ(OEt)2] (1; 2,4-F2PhCO2- = 2,4-difluorobenzoate; TCNQ(OEt)2 = 2,5-diethoxy-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane), where three molar equivalents of CO2 was accommodated at a CO2 pressure of 100 kPa. The magnetic change originates from charge fluctuation due to the transfer of electrons moving from the electron-donor to the electron-acceptor unit or vice versa, resulting in a change in the electron distribution induced by CO2 adsorption/desorption in the donor-acceptor-type charge transfer framework. Owing to the reversible electronic state change upon CO2 adsorption/desorption, these magnetic phases are switched, accompanied by modification of the electrical conductivity, which is boosted by the CO2 accommodation. This is the first example of the creation of a CO2-responsive magnet, which is promising for novel molecular multifunctional devices.

Mechanical Exfoliation of Multilayer Pseudohalogen-Bridged Nanosheets

The development of nanolayered materials is one of the greatest challenges in nanoscience. Until now, pseudohalogen-bridged nanosheets using the mechanical exfoliation method have not been reported. A state-of-the-art material, {[FeII(3-acetylpyridine)2][HgII(μ-SCN)4]}n (1), has been developed to achieve the goal. The compound forms a two-dimensional (2D) coordination polymer with weak out-of-plane van der Waals interactions and has an intrinsic tendency to form shear planes perpendicular to the crystallographic c-direction. These structural features predispose 1 to mechanical exfoliation realized by employing the "Scotch-tape method". As a result, nanosheets were fabricated and characterized by digital optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. The nanosheets were found to have a minimum thickness of ∼15 nm and a lateral size of several micrometers. As the first example of thiocyanato-bridged coordination nanosheets, these materials extend the scope of 2D materials and potentially pave the way toward developing nanolayered materials.

Photoinduced large magnetic change at room temperature and radical-quenched spin glass in a cyanide-bridged MnII-FeIII compound

By the coordination assembly of a redox photoactive functional motif and a cyanide-bridged moiety, a cyanide-bridged MnII-FeIII compound with large photoinduced magnetic change at room-temperature due to photoinduced electron transfer was obtanied. This compound also shows unprecedented radical-quenched spin glass in molecule based magnets.

Dynamic Aggregation Triggering Reversible Spin-State Switching

The manipulation of spin-state switching (SSS) under ambient conditions is of significant importance for the construction of molecular switches. Herein, we demonstrate that reversible SSS can be mediated by the aggregation state of a near-infrared (NIR)-sensitive ferrous complex. The ferrous complex was J-aggregated in a DMF suspension and with a low-spin (LS) state; however, with the addition of water, it changed to H-aggregation and reached a high-spin (HS) state, owing to the enhanced intramolecular charge transfer and metal-to-ligand charge transfer. Interestingly, the following NIR irradiation can restore the J-aggregation and LS states owing to the enhanced ligand-to-ligand charge transfer. More interestingly, the ferrous complex can be further incorporated into a hygroscopic sponge that was capable of capturing humidity effectively for all weather conditions, which displayed reversible SSS via alternating atmospheric humidity capture and NIR irradiation under ambient conditions in the sponge state. This study thus opens up a new avenue for the development of novel smart molecular switches at the device level.

Control of electronic polarization via charge ordering and electron transfer: electronic ferroelectrics and electronic pyroelectrics

Ferroelectric, pyroelectric, and piezoelectric compounds whose electric polarization properties can be controlled by external stimuli such as electric field, temperature, and pressure have various applications, including ferroelectric memory materials, sensors, and thermal energy-conversion devices. Numerous polarization switching compounds, particularly molecular ferroelectrics and pyroelectrics, have been developed. In these materials, the polarization switching usually proceeds via ion displacement and reorientation of polar molecules, which are responsible for the change in ionic polarization and orientational polarization, respectively. Recently, the development of electronic ferroelectrics, in which the mechanism of polarization change is charge ordering and electron transfer, has attracted great attention. In this article, representative examples of electronic ferroelectrics are summarized, including (TMTTF)2X (TMTTF = tetramethyl-tetrathiafulvalene, X = anion), α-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 (BEDT-TTF = bis(ethylenedithio)-tetrathiafulvalene), TTF-CA (TTF = tetrathiafulvalene, CA = p-chloranil), and [(n-C3H7)4N][FeIIIFeII(dto)3] (dto = 1,2-dithiooxalate = C2O2S2). Furthermore, polarization switching materials using directional electron transfer in nonferroelectrics, the so-called electronic pyroelectrics, such as [(Cr(SS-cth))(Co(RR-cth))(μ-dhbq)](PF6)3 (dhbq = deprotonated 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone, cth = 5,5,7,12,12,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraaza-cyclotetradecane), are introduced. Future prospects are also discussed, particularly the development of new properties in polarization switching through the manipulation of electronic polarization in electronic ferroelectrics and electronic pyroelectrics by taking advantage of the inherent properties of electrons.

KMB4O6F3 (M = Co, Fe): two-dimensional magnetic fluorooxoborates with triangular lattices directed by triangular BO3 units

Frustrated magnetic systems are of great interest owing to their spin liquid state for application in quantum computing. However, experimentally, spin liquid has not been realized. Thus, experimental explorations of frustrated magnetic systems including triangular lattices are still urgent, particularly for directed synthesis compared to random exploration. Herein, for the first time, directed by the use of a triangular unit of the BO3 anion group, two novel layered magnetic fluorooxoborates KMB4O6F3 (M = Co 1, Fe 2) with triangular lattices have been hydrothermally synthesized and characterized. Compounds 1 and 2 are isostructural and crystallize in the P21/c space group with layered magnetic triangular lattices, which are further separated by K+ ions. Magnetic susceptibility curves of both 1 and 2 show no λ-anomaly peak down to a low temperature of 2 K in the absence of a magnetic long-range ordering transition, which are further confirmed by the heat capacity results. The magnetic-field dependence of magnetization at 2 K shows saturation of 2.20μB for 1 and 4.24μB for 2, respectively, at 7 T, after roughly subtracting the Van Vleck paramagnetic contribution. Further in-depth investigation of the underlying physics at a lower temperature below 2 K would be subsequently performed. Moreover, thermal stability and FT-IR and UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy with optical bandgap properties are also reported. Most importantly, our work provides a promising method to experimentally realize specific magnetic lattices (e.g. triangular lattices) directed by the use of triangular groups (e.g. BO3) as the functional unit.

Modulation of magnetization dynamics of an Er(III) coordination polymer by the conversion of a ligand to a radical using UV light

Light-induced substance conversion is highly promising for creating new radical-based compounds. Herein, we report an Er(III) coordination polymer [Er(CA)(ACA)(DMF)(H₂O)]_n (1) and its Y(III)-diluted analogue 1@Y (H₂CA = 2,5-dichloro-3,6-dihydroxy-p-quinone, HACA = 9-anthracene carboxylic acid) with the light-induced transformation of the ligand to a radical. The χ_MT values of light-transformed products 1a and 1a@Y are higher than those of 1 and 1@Y, respectively, due to the formation of radicals by ultraviolet light irradiation, confirmed by EPR measurement as well. The effective energy barriers for magnetization reversal (U_eff) decrease from 72 K for 1 to 67 K for 1a, and from 117 K for 1@Y to 94 K for 1a@Y. This work not only provides a new light-conversion system but also reveals the nature of photo-induced variation of magnetic properties.

Site Selectivity for the Spin States and Spin Crossover in Undecanuclear Heterometallic Cyanido-Bridged Clusters

Polynuclear molecular clusters offer an opportunity to design new hierarchical switchable materials with collective properties, based on variation of the chemical composition, size, shapes, and overall building blocks organization. In this study, we rationally designed and constructed an unprecedented series of cyanido-bridged nanoclusters realizing new undecanuclear topology: Fe^II[Fe^II(bzbpen)]₆[W^V(CN)₈]₂[W^IV(CN)₈]₂·18MeOH (1), Na^I[Co^II(bzbpen)]₆[W^V(CN)₈]₃[W^IV(CN)₈]·28MeOH (2), Na^I[Ni^II(bzbpen)]₆[W^V(CN)₈]₃[W^IV(CN)₈]·27MeOH (3), and Co^II[Co^II(R/S-pabh)₂]₆[W^V(CN)₈]₂[W^IV(CN)₈]₂·26MeOH [4R and 4S; bzbpen = N¹,N²-dibenzyl-N¹,N²-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine; R/S-pabh = (R/S)-N-(1-naphthyl)-1-(pyridin-2-yl)methanimine], of size up to 11 nm³, ca. 2.0 × 2.2 × 2.5 nm (1-3) and ca. 1.4 × 2.5 × 2.5 nm (4). 1, 2, and 4 exhibit site selectivity for the spin states and spin transition related to the structural speciation based on subtle exogenous and endogenous effects imposed on similar but distinguishable 3d metal-ion-coordination moieties. 1 exhibits a mid-temperature-range spin-crossover (SCO) behavior that is more advanced than the previously reported SCO clusters based on octacyanidometallates and an onset of SCO behavior close to room temperature. The latter feature is also present in 2 and 4, which suggests the emergence of Co^II-centered SCO not observed in previous bimetallic cyanido-bridged Co^II-W^V/IV systems. In addition, reversible switching of the SCO behavior in 1 via a single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation during desolvation was also documented.

ON/OFF Photo(switching) along with Reversible Spin-State Change and Single-Crystal-to-Single-Crystal Transformation in a Mixed-Valence Fe(II)Fe(III) Molecular System

A mixed-valence Fe(II)Fe(III) molecular system, {[Fe(pzTp)(CN)₃]₂[Fe(bik)₂]₂}·[Fe(pzTp)(CN)₃]₂·4MeOH (1·4MeOH) (bik = bis-(1-methylimidazolyl)-2-methanone, pzTp = tetrakis(pyrazolyl)borate), exhibits single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SC-SC) transformation while increasing the temperature and is converted into {[Fe(pzTp)(CN)₃]₂[Fe(bik)₂]₂}·[Fe(pzTp)(CN)₃]₂ (1). Both complexes exhibit thermo-induced spin-state switching behavior along with reversible SC-SC transformation, where the low-temperature [Fe^III_LSFe^II_LS]₂ phase transforms into a high-temperature [Fe^III_LSFe^II_HS]₂ phase. 1·4MeOH exhibits an abrupt spin-state switching with T_1/2 at 355 K, whereas 1 undergoes a gradual and reversible spin-state switching with a lower T_1/2 at 338 K. Astonishingly, 1 exhibits ON/OFF photo-induced spin-state switching with T_LIESST = 67 K, whereas 1·4MeOH does not show such an effect.

Thermo- and photo-induced electron transfer in a series of [Fe2Co2] capsules

Recently, a family of [Fe₂Co₂] molecular capsules that display tunable electron transfer-coupled spin transition (ETCST) behavior were reported via a smart approach through Schiff-base condensation of aldehyde-functionalized 2,2-bipyridines (bpy^CHO) and 1,7-heptanediamine (H₂N(CH₂)₇NH₂). Here, three more capsule complexes {[(Tp^R)Fe(CN)₃]₂[Co(bpy^{CN(CH₂)_nNC}bpy)]₂[ClO₄]₂}·n(solvent) (1, Tp^R = Tp*, n = 5, sol = 8DMF; 2, Tp^R = Tp^Me, n = 9, sol = 5MeCN; and 3, Tp^R = Tp*, n = 11, sol = 5MeCN), where Tp* = hydridotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)borate and Tp^Me = hydridotris(3-methylpyrazol-1-yl)borate are reported, demonstrating a successful extension of such an approach with other alkyldiamines of different lengths. Combined X-ray crystallographic, infrared spectroscopic and magnetic studies reveal incomplete electron transfer with either changing temperature or upon light exposure.

Plastic bending in a semiconducting coordination polymer crystal enabled by delamination

Coordination polymers (CPs) are a class of crystalline solids that are considered brittle, due to the dominance of directional coordination bonding, which limits their utility in flexible electronics and wearable devices. Hence, engineering plasticity into functional CPs is of great importance. Here, we report plastic bending of a semiconducting CP crystal, Cu-Trz (Trz = 1,2,3-triazolate), that originates from delamination facilitated by the discrete bonding interactions along different crystallographic directions in the lattice. The coexistence of strong coordination bonds and weak supramolecular interactions, together with the unique molecular packing, are the structural features that enable the mechanical flexibility and anisotropic response. The spatially resolved analysis of short-range molecular forces reveals that the strong coordination bonds, and the adaptive C–H···π and Cu···Cu interactions, synergistically lead to the delamination of the local structures and consequently the associated mechanical bending. The proposed delamination mechanism offers a versatile tool for designing the plasticity of CPs and other molecular crystals.

Tuning the electron transfer events in a series of cyanide-bridged [Fe2Co2] squares according to different electron donors

It has been recognized that both the ligand fields and intermolecular interactions may greatly impact the electron-transfer-coupled spin transition (ETCST) events in switchable magnetic materials; however, the engineering of these factors within a given system is still challenging. In this article, we chose the 4,4'-substituent 2,2'-bipyridine derivatives as chelating ligands according to their increasing electron-donating strength and incremental potential for forming hydrogen bonds (bpy^CHO,CH₃(L1) < bpy^{CH₂OH,CH₃} (L2) < bpy^{CH₂OH,CH₂OH} (L3)), and prepared three new [Fe₂Co₂] complexes, {[(Tp*)Fe(CN)₃Co(L)₂]₂[ClO₄]₂}·Sol (1, L = L1, Sol = 4MeCN·2H₂O; 2, L = L2, Sol = 3MeCN; 3, L = L3, Sol = 4MeOH; Tp* = hydrotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)borate). X-ray crystallography studies revealed that all the complexes share similar cyanide-bridged [Fe₂Co₂] square compositions except for the different substituted groups of L ligands, which led to the clearly evidenced intercluster hydrogen bonds between the neighbouring hydroxyl groups in 2 and 3. As a result, 1 remained in the paramagnetic [FeIII,LS2CoII,HS2] state over the whole temperature range, while 2 and 3 showed complete ETCST behaviour with the transition temperatures (T_1/2) being 221 and 294 K, respectively.

Redox-Programmable Spin-Crossover Behaviors in a Cationic Framework

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provide versatile platforms to construct multi-responsive materials. Herein, by introducing the neutral tetradentate ligand and the linear dicyanoaurate(I) anion, we reported a rare cationic MOF [Fe^II(TPB){Au^I(CN)₂}]I·4H₂O·4DMF (TPB = 1,2,4,5-tetra(pyridin-4-yl)benzene) with hysteretic spin-crossover (SCO) behavior near room temperature. This hybrid framework with an open metal site (Au^I) exhibits redox-programmable capability toward dihalogen molecules. By means of post-synthetic modification, all the linear [Au^I(CN)₂]^- linkers can be oxidized to square planar [Au^III(CN)₂X₂]^- units, which results in the hysteretic SCO behaviors switching from one-step to two-step for Br₂ and three-step for I₂. More importantly, the stepwise SCO behaviors can go back to one-step via the reduction by l-ascorbic acid (AA). Periodic DFT calculations using various SCAN-type exchange-correlation functionals have been employed to rationalize the experimental data. Hence, these results demonstrate for the first time that switchable one-/two-/three-stepped SCO dynamics can be manipulated by chemical redox reactions, which opens a new perspective for multi-responsive molecular switches.

Multiple MMCT properties of the diruthenium-based cyanido-bridged complex RuVI2-NC-RuII-CN-RuVI2

The diruthenium-based linear mixed valence complex trans-[Ru₂(ap)₄-NC-Ru(DMAP)₄-CN-Ru₂(ap)₄][PF₆]₂ (12+[PF6]2) (ap = 2-anilinopyridinate, DMAP = 4-dimethylaminopyridine) and its two-electron oxidation product 14+[PF6]4 have been synthesized and fully characterized. The investigation reveals that complex 12+ displays a single MMCT transition, whereas complex 14+ has three identified MMCT transitions (MMCT-1, MMCT-2 and MMCT-3) upon oxidation. Interestingly, MMCT-2 in complex 14+ might result from the transition from the Ru^III-NC-Ru^II-CN-Ru^III component, which is composed of the central Ru^II and its two neighboring Ru^III atoms from the cluster RuVI2 units, to both the terminal Ru^III atoms of the same cluster RuVI2 units, which is supported by the TDDFT calculations.

Achieving large thermal hysteresis in an anthracene-based manganese(II) complex via photo-induced electron transfer

Achieving magnetic bistability with large thermal hysteresis is still a formidable challenge in material science. Here we synthesize a series of isostructural chain complexes using 9,10-anthracene dicarboxylic acid as a photoactive component. The electron transfer photochromic Mn²⁺ and Zn²⁺ compounds with photogenerated diradicals are confirmed by structures, optical spectra, magnetic analyses, and density functional theory calculations. For the Mn²⁺ analog, light irradiation changes the spin topology from a single Mn²⁺ ion to a radical-Mn²⁺ single chain, further inducing magnetic bistability with a remarkably wide thermal hysteresis of 177 K. Structural analysis of light irradiated crystals at 300 and 50 K reveals that the rotation of the anthracene rings changes the Mn1–O2–C8 angle and coordination geometries of the Mn²⁺ center, resulting in magnetic bistability with this wide thermal hysteresis. This work provides a strategy for constructing molecular magnets with large thermal hysteresis via electron transfer photochromism.

Old Materials for New Functions: Recent Progress on Metal Cyanide Based Porous Materials

Cyanide is the simplest ligand with strong basicity to construct open frameworks including some of the oldest compounds reported in the history of coordination chemistry. Cyanide can form numerous cyanometallates with different transition metal ions showing diverse geometries. Rational design of robust extended networks is enabled by the strong bonding nature and high directionality of cyanide ligand. By virtue of a combination of cyanometallates and/or organic linkers, multifunctional framework materials can be targeted and readily synthesized for various applications, ranging from molecular adsorptions/separations to energy conversion and storage, and spin-crossover materials. External guest- and stimuli-responsive behaviors in cyanide-based materials are also highlighted for the development of the next-generation smart materials. In this review, an overview of the recent progress of cyanide-based multifunctional materials is presented to demonstrate the great potential of cyanide ligands in the development of modern coordination chemistry and material science.

Polyoxometalate-Assisted Assembly of Pearl-Chain-Like Cyanide-Bridged Single-Chain Magnets

The introduction of Keggin-type POMs of [PMo₁₂O₄₀]^3- or [SiW₁₂O₄₀]^4- as counteranions into the Fe^III-M^II cyanometalate system afforded three chain complexes: [(Tp*)Fe(CN)₃Ni(DMF)₄]₂{[(Tp*)Fe(CN)₃Ni(DMF)₃(H₂O)]₂Ni(DMF)₄}[PMo₁₂O₄₀]₂·14DMF (1, Tp*= hydridotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)borate) and {[(Tp*)Fe(CN)₃M(DMF)₃(H₂O)]₂M(DMF)₄}[SiW₁₂O₄₀]·3DMF (2, M = Ni^II; 3, M = Co^II). Complex 1 contains both discrete cationic [Fe₂Ni₂]²⁺ squares and less-studied {Fe₂Ni₃}_n pearl chains, namely 3,2-chains, while 2 and 3 consist of pure 3,2-chains due to the replacement of [PMo₁₂O₄₀]^3- with [SiW₁₂O₄₀]^4- bearing one more negative charge. Magnetic studies revealed that all of the complexes exhibit single-chain-magnet (SCM) behaviors with the effective thermal barriers of Δ_τ1/k_B = 61.6 K (infinite regime) and Δ_τ2/k_B = 36.5 K (finite regime) for 1, Δ_τ/k_B = 46.9 K for 2 (finite), and Δ_τ/k_B = 30.6 K for 3 (finite). The POM moieties may play a pivotal role for the realization of this promising archetype of favoring SCM property: (1) the highly negatively charged POMs may facilitate the formation of the uncommon highly positive "pearl chain"; (2) the nanosized POMs necessarily led to the good isolation of the chains in the title complexes, and (3) the employment of POMs with different charges may regulate the resultant complexes in both structure and magnetism.

A cyanide-bridged Fe-Co pearl-chain-like single-chain magnet containing 4-coordinate cobalt(II) ions

Treatment of CoCl₂·6H₂O and tris(pyrazolyl-1-yl)borate tricyanoiron(III) anions at an elevated temperature (55 °C) afforded two less-common pearl-chain-like compounds, {[(Tp^R)Fe(CN)₃CoCl₂]₂Co(DMF)₄}·nDMF (1, Tp^R = Tp^4-Me = hydridotris(4-methylpyrazol-1-yl)borate, n = 1 and 2, Tp^R = Tp*^Me = hydridotris(3,4,5-trimethylpyrazol-1-yl)borate, n = 4.5), in which the 4-coordinate Co(II) ions and [(Tp^R)Fe^III(CN)₃]^- units are alternately bridged by cyanide groups into squares, which are further linked with the 6-coordinate Co(II) ions into an infinite chain. Interestingly, the magnetic study revealed that 1 exhibits a typical single-chain magnet behaviour with an effective energy barrier of 28.0 K, while surprisingly no Glauber dynamics was observed for 2 despite their very similar structures. The variations of the local coordination environments of the cobalt ions and the cyanide linkages were evidenced, and they may account for the significant difference in their magnetic properties related to the global magnetic anisotropy and magnetic exchange of the chain.

Salicylideneaniline is a Photoswitchable Ferroelectric Crystal

Since the discovery of the first ferroelectric Rochelle salt, most ferroelectrics have been investigated showing thermally triggered symmetry-breaking phase transition. Although photochromism arising from geometrical isomerization was reported as early as 1867, such photoswitchable ferroelectric crystals have scarcely been developed to date. Herein, we report that salicylideneaniline is a photochromic ferroelectric crystal. Upon photoirradiation, the dielectric constant shows obvious switching between high and low dielectric states, and more importantly, the ferroelectric polarization demonstrates quick and reversible switching. This work opens the gate to developing photoswitchable ferroelectrics, which holds great potential for applications in optically controlled smart devices.

Optical Control of Polarization Switching in a Single-Component Organic Ferroelectric Crystal

The optical control of polarization switching is attracting tremendous interest because photoirradiation stands out as a nondestructive, noncontact, and remote-control means beyond an electric or strain field. The current research mainly uses various photoexcited electronic effects to achieve the photocontrol polarization, such as a light-driven flexoelectric effect and a photovoltaic effect. However, since photochromism was discovered in 1867, the structural phase transition caused by photoisomerization has never been associated with ferroelectricity. Here, we successfully synthesized an organic photochromic ferroelectric with polar space group Pna2₁, 3,4,5-trifluoro-N-(3,5-di-tert-butylsalicylidene)aniline, whose color can change between yellow and orange via laser illumination. Its dielectric permittivity and spontaneous polarization can be switched reversibly with a photoinduced phase transition triggered by structural photoisomerization between the enol form and the trans-keto form. To our knowledge, this is the first photoswitchable ferroelectric crystal to achieve polarization switching through a structural phase transition triggered by photoisomerization. This finding paves the way toward photocontrol of smart materials and biomechanical applications in the future.
