Abstract
SCOPE The emergence of post-COVID-19 condition (PCC) after SARS-CoV-2 infection underscores the critical need for preparedness in addressing future post-acute infection syndromes (PAIS), particularly those linked to epidemic outbreaks. The lack of standardized clinical and epidemiological data during the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly hindered timely diagnosis and effective treatment of PCC, highlighting the necessity of pre-emptively standardizing data collection in clinical studies to better define and manage future PAIS. In response, the Cohort Coordination Board, a consortium of European-funded COVID-19 research projects, has reviewed data from PCC studies conducted by its members. This paper leverages the Cohort Coordination Board's expertise to propose a standardized catalogue of variables, informed by the lessons learned during the pandemic, intended for immediate use in the design of future observational studies and clinical trials for emerging infections of epidemic potential. RECOMMENDATIONS The early implementation of standardized data collection, facilitated by the PAIS data catalogue, is essential for accelerating the identification and management of PAIS in future epidemics. This approach will enable more precise syndrome definitions, expedite diagnostic processes, and optimize treatment strategies, while also supporting long-term follow-up of affected individuals. The availability of harmonized data collection protocols will enhance preparedness across European and international cohort studies, and trials enabling a prompt and coordinated response, as well as more efficient resource allocation, in the event of emerging infections and associated PAIS.

Abstract
Background Women treated with hemodialysis report lower health-related quality of life (HRQoL) compared with men. Whether this is related to sex-specific (biological) (e.g. under-dialysis due to body composition differences) or gender-specific (sociocultural) factors (e.g. greater domestic/caregiver responsibilities for women) is unknown. We examined the association between sex assigned at birth, gender score and HRQoL in individuals initiating conventional and incremental hemodialysis. Methods In this prospective multi-center cohort study, incident adult hemodialysis patients were recruited between 1 June 2020 and 30 April 2022 in Alberta, Canada. Sex assigned at birth and gender identity were self-reported. Gender-related characteristics were assessed by self-administered questionnaire to derive a composite measure of gender. The primary outcome was change in Kidney Disease Quality of Life 36 physical (PCS) and mental (MCS) component scores after 3 months of hemodialysis. Results Sixty participants were enrolled (conventional hemodialysis: 14 female, 19 male; incremental hemodialysis: 12 female, 15 male). PCS improved from baseline with conventional (P = .01) but not incremental (P = .52) hemodialysis in female participants. No difference in MCS was observed by hemodialysis type in female participants. Gender score was not associated with changes in PCS in female participants, irrespective of hemodialysis type. Higher gender score was associated with increased MCS with incremental (P = .04), but not conventional (P = .14), hemodialysis (P = .03 conventional vs incremental) in female participants. No change in PCS or MCS was seen in male participants, irrespective of hemodialysis type or gender score. Conclusion In this exploratory study, conventional hemodialysis was associated with improved PCS in female participants, while incremental hemodialysis was associated with improved MCS in female participants with more roles and responsibilities traditionally ascribed to women. Large prospective studies are required to further investigate these relationships.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is an increasingly common condition worldwide that leads to substantial mortality. Research in the past decade has informed significant advances in preventing CKD or delaying its progression, mainly through new medications. This progress, however, requires adequate screening and identification of early CKD to truly transform patient outcomes. Revised guidelines from the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes consortium of experts aim to help clinicians incorporate these advances into practice. This article summarizes key updates from the guidelines regarding the evaluation and management of CKD that can lead to better patient outcomes.

Abstract
Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is responsible for nearly half of all end-stage kidney disease and kidney failure is a major driver of mortality among patients with diabetes. To date, few safe and effective drugs are available to reverse the decline of kidney function. Kidney tubules producing energy by fatty acid metabolism are pivotal in development and deterioration of DKD. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs), comprising PPARα, PPARδ and PPARγ play a senior role in the pathogenesis of DKD for their functions in glycemic control and lipid metabolism; whereas systemic activation of PPARγ causes serious side-effects in clinical settings. Compound H11 was a potent PPARα and PPARδ (PPARα/δ) dual agonist with potent and well-balanced PPARα/δ agonistic activity and a high selectivity over PPARγ. In this study, the potential therapeutic effects of compound H11 were determined in a db/db mouse model of diabetes. Expressions of PPARα and PPARδ in nuclei of tubules were markedly reduced in diabetes. Transcriptional changes of tubular cells showed that H11 was an effective PPARα/δ dual agonist taking effects both in vivo and in vitro. Systemic administration of H11 showed glucose tolerance and lipid metabolic benefits in db/db mice. Moreover, H11 treatment exerted protective effects on diabetic kidney injury. In addition to fatty acid metabolism, H11 also regulated diabetes-induced metabolic alternations of branch chain amino acid degradation and glycolysis. The present study demonstrated a crucial role of H11 in regulation of energy homeostasis and metabolism in glucose-treated tubular cells. Overall, compound H11 holds therapeutic promise for DKD.
