Water-Writing Pattern on PEDOT:PSS Inverse Opal Films through the Synergistic Effect of Morphology/Conformation Transition

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) has received tremendous attention in the energy field owing to its high conductivity, ease of processing, biocompatibility, and low cost-effectiveness. Combining PEDOT:PSS and photonic crystals (PCs) is expected to promote the development of high-performance optoelectronic devices. The conductivity of PEDOT:PSS at present can only be measured through specific equipment, and the visualization of optoelectronic integration still remains a challenge. In this study, various patterned PEDOT:PSS inverse opal (PEDOT:PSS-IO) films are constructed by associating the conductivity of PEDOT:PSS with the structural color of PCs based on the synergistic effect of morphology/conformation transition, which achieves the visualization of optoelectronic integration. Morphology transition of the PEDOT:PSS-IO film alters from the interconnected to gradual closure pore structure, accompanied by an unusual blueshift of the stopband, which can be attributed to the collapse/reconstruction of the frame of the PEDOT:PSS-IO film. Conformation transition of PEDOT chains converts from the benzene to quinone structure, accompanying an enhancement of conductivity, which resulted from PSS removal and secondary doping. Under the induction of a polar solvent, the PEDOT:PSS-IO film brings the changes in optical/electrical dual-signals based on the synergistic effect of morphology/conformation transition. This phenomenon can be developed for the creation of a conductive PC pattern by using a polar solvent (water) as an ink, which is beneficial for the visualization of optoelectronic integration. This work provides essential significance for the fabrication of functional optoelectronic devices.

Structural Color Enhancement through Synchronizing Natural Convection and Marangoni Flow in Pendant Drops

Structural color, renowned for its enduring vibrancy, has been extensively developed and applied in the fields of display and anticounterfeiting. However, its limitations in brightness and saturation hinder further application in these areas. Herein, we propose a pendant evaporation self-assembly method to address these challenges simultaneously. By leveraging natural convection and Marangoni flow synchronization, the self-assembly process enhances the dynamics and duration of colloidal nanoparticles, thereby enhancing the orderliness of colloidal photonic crystals. On average, this technique boosts the brightness of structural color by 20% and its saturation by 35%. Moreover, pendant evaporation self-assembly is simple and convenient to operate, making it suitable for industrial production. We anticipate that its adoption will remarkably advance the industrialization of structural color, facilitating its engineering applications across various fields, such as display technology and anticounterfeiting identification.

Engineering a polyvinyl butyral hydrogel as a thermochromic interlayer for energy-saving windows

Achieving mastery over light using thermochromic materials is crucial for energy-saving glazing. However, challenges such as high production costs, limited durability, and recyclability issues have hindered their widespread application in buildings. Herein, we develop a glass interlayer made of a polyvinyl butyral-based hydrogel swollen with LiCl solution. In addition to a fast, isochoric, and reversible transparency-to-opacity transition occurring as ambient temperatures exceed thermally comfortable levels, this hydrogel uniquely encompasses multiple features such as frost resistance, recyclability, scalability, and toughness. The combination of these features is achieved through a delicate balance of polyvinyl butyral's amphiphilicity and the suppression of network-forming phase separation. This design endows a nanostructured polyvinyl butyral-LiCl composite gel with swollen molecular segments linked by dispersed cross-linking sites in the form of hydrophobic nano-nodules. Upon laminating this hydrogel (a thickness of 0.3 mm), the resultant glazing product demonstrates approximately 90% luminous transmittance even at sub-zero temperatures, along with a significant modulation of solar and infrared radiation at 80.8% and 68.5%, respectively. Through simulations, we determined that windows equipped with the hydrogel could reduce energy consumption by 36% compared to conventional glass windows in warm seasons. The widespread adoption of polyvinyl butyral in construction underscores the promise of this hydrogel as a thermochromic interlayer for glazing.

Dual-Mode Hydrogels with Structural and Fluorescent Colors toward Multistage Secure Information Encryption

Constructing an anti-counterfeiting material with non-interference dual optical modes is an effective way to improve information security. However, it remains challenging to achieve multistage secure information encryption due to the limited stimulus responsiveness and color tunability of the current dual-mode materials. Herein, a dual-mode hydrogel with both independently tunable structural and fluorescent colors toward multistage information encryption, is reported. In this hydrogel system, the rigid lamellar structure of poly(dodecylglyceryl itaconate) (pDGI) formed by shear flow-induced self-assembly provides the restricted domains wherein monomers undergo polymerization to form a hydrogel network, producing structural color. The introduction of fluorescent monomer 6-acrylamidopicolinate (6APA) as a complexation site provides the possibility of fluorescent color formation. The hydrogel's angle-dependent structural color can be controlled by adjusting the crosslinking density and water content. Additionally, the fluorescence color can be modulated by adjusting the ratio of lanthanide ions. Information of dual-mode can be displayed separately in different channels and synergistically overlayed to read the ultimate message. Thus, a multistage information encryption system based on this hydrogel is devised through the programed decryption process. This strategy holds tremendous potential as a platform for encrypting and safeguarding valuable and authentic information in the field of anti-counterfeiting.

Assembly-Induced Dynamic Structural Color in a Host-Guest System for Time-Dependent Anticounterfeiting and Double-Lock Encryption

Manipulation of periodic micro/nanostructures in polymer film is of great importance for academics and industrial applications in anticounterfeiting. However, with the increasing demand on information security, materials with time-dependent features are urgently required, especially the material where the same information can appear more than once on the time scale. Here, one concise strategy to realize time-dependent anticounterfeiting and "double-lock" information encryption based on a host-guest system is proposed, with one photoresponsive azopolymer as the host and one liquid-crystalline molecule as the guest. The system exhibits a tunable mass transport in pre-designed periodic micro/nanostructures by tailoring the process of cis-to-trans recovery of azo groups and assembly of mesogenic trans-isomers, resulting in a dynamic structural color in film. Taking advantage of this extraordinary feature, time-dependent dynamic anticounterfeiting has been achieved. More importantly, the time of each state's appearance in the whole process can be modulated by changing the host-guest ratio. Combining the manipulatable process of mass transport with the unique decoding method, the stored information in film can be decrypted correctly. This work provides an unprecedented dynamic approach for advanced anticounterfeiting technology with a higher level of security and high-end applications in information encryption.

Operando Colorations from Real-Time Growth of 3D-Printed Nanoarchitectures

While artificial 3D nanostructures can generate precise and flexible coloration, their real-time color changes during 3D nanoprinting remain unexplored owing to the inherent challenges of in situ transient measurements and observations. In this study, a 3D-printing system which supports the operando observation/measurement of the color dynamics of subwavelength metallic nanoarchitectures fabricated in real time is developed and evaluated. During 3D printing, the dimensions and geometries of the 3D nanostructures grow over time, producing a large library of optical spectra associated with real-time color changes. Only a timer is needed to define the expected colors from a single 3D print run. Fin-like nanostructures are used to toggle colors based on the polarization effect and produce color gradients. Based on structural coloration, nanoarchitectures are designed and printed to animate desired color patterns. Moreover, the resulting color dynamics can also serve as an operando identifier for real-time structural information during 3D nanoprinting. A single print run enables the efficient creation of a comprehensive library of desired colorations owing to the flexibility in time-dependent controllability and 3D geometries at the subwavelength scale. 3D nanoprinted plasmonic structures exhibiting time-varying colorations (4D printing of colors) uniquely redefines the coloring stategy, offering considerable potential for numerous applications.

Laser-induced locally controllable craze-like microstructures for polymer white structural coloration

As a promising candidate for the inkless coloring method, white structural color has undergone widespread investigation because of its fascinating properties. Recently, various methods have been developed to prepare disordered micro/nanostructures to produce white structural color. However, complex and high-cost processing procedures severely restrict the efficient and large-scale preparation of disordered micro/nanostructures for achieving white structural color. Herein, we report an ingenious way to realize white structural color by laser-inducing craze-like microstructures in core-shell microfiber-based polymers. A microfiber with copper nanowires (CuNWs) as the core surrounded by a polyformaldehyde (POM) shell is prepared by a simple in situ fibrillation method. The craze-like microstructures with micro/nanofibrils and micropores are locally constructed in polymers by a facile, efficient, inexpensive, controllable, and environmentally friendly laser direct writing (LDW) technique. Ascribed to the broadband visible light reflection caused by disordered microstructures, the laser-induced craze-like microstructures in polymers based on CuNWs@POM core-shell microfibers exhibit a distinct white structural color. This work paves a way for achieving white structural color and provides a novel insight for utilizing the previously considered useless crazing phenomenon.

Droplet-Pen Writing of Ultra-Uniform Graphene Pattern for Multi-Spectral Applications

Artificial optical patterns bring wide benefits in applications like structural color display, photonic camouflage, and electromagnetic cloak. Their scalable coating on large-scale objects will greatly enrich the multimodal-interactive society. Here, a droplet-pen writing (DPW) method to directly write multi-spectral patterns of thin-film graphene is reported. By amphiphilicity regulations of 2D graphene nanosheets, ultra-uniform and ultrathin films can spontaneously form on droplet caps and pave to the substrate, thus inducing optical interference. This allows the on-surface patterning by pen writing of droplets. Specifically, drop-on-demand thin films are achieved with millimeter lateral size and uniformity up to 97% in subwavelength thickness (<100 nm), corresponding to an aspect ratio of over 30 000. The pixelated thin-film patterns of disks and lines in an 8-inch wafer scale are demonstrated, which enable low-emittance structural color paintings. Furthermore, the applications of these patterns for dual-band camouflage and infrared-to-visible encryption are investigated. This study highlights the potential of 2D material self-assembly in the large-scale preparation and multi-spectral application of thin film-based optical patterns.

Fine Optimization of Colloidal Photonic Crystal Structural Color for Physically Unclonable Multiplex Encryption and Anti-Counterfeiting

Robust anti-counterfeiting techniques aim for easy identification while remaining difficult to forge, especially for high-value items such as currency and passports. However, many existing anti-counterfeiting techniques rely on deterministic processes, resulting in loopholes for duplication and counterfeiting. Therefore, achieving high-level encryption and easy authentication through conventional anti-counterfeiting techniques has remained a significant challenge. To address this, this work proposes a solution that combined fluorescence and structural colors, creating a physically unclonable multiplex encryption system (PUMES). In this study, the physicochemical properties of colloidal photonic inks are systematically adjusted to construct a comprehensive printing phase diagram, revealing the printable region. Furthermore, the brightness and color saturation of inkjet-printed colloidal photonic crystal structural colors are optimized by controlling the substrate's hydrophobicity, printed droplet volume, and the addition of noble metals. Finally, fluorescence is incorporated to build PUMES, including macroscopic fluorescence and structural color patterns, as well as microscopic physically unclonable fluorescence patterns. The PUMES with intrinsic randomness and high encoding capacity are authenticated by a deep learning algorithm, which proved to be reliable and efficient under various observation conditions. This approach can provide easy identification and formidable resistance against counterfeiting, making it highly promising for the next-generation anti-counterfeiting of currency and passports.

Continuous production of ultratough semiconducting polymer fibers with high electronic performance

Conjugated polymers have demonstrated promising optoelectronic properties, but their brittleness and poor mechanical characteristics have hindered their fabrication into durable fibers and textiles. Here, we report a universal approach to continuously producing highly strong, ultratough conjugated polymer fibers using a flow-enhanced crystallization (FLEX) method. These fibers exhibit one order of magnitude higher tensile strength (>200 megapascals) and toughness (>80 megajoules per cubic meter) than traditional semiconducting polymer fibers and films, outperforming many synthetic fibers, ready for scalable production. These fibers also exhibit unique strain-enhanced electronic properties and exceptional performance when used as stretchable conductors, thermoelectrics, transistors, and sensors. This work not only highlights the influence of fluid mechanical effects on the crystallization and mechanical properties of conjugated polymers but also opens up exciting possibilities for integrating these functional fibers into wearable electronics.

Robust myco-composites: a biocomposite platform for versatile hybrid-living materials

Fungal mycelium, a living network of filamentous threads, thrives on lignocellulosic waste and exhibits rapid growth, hydrophobicity, and intrinsic regeneration, offering a potential means to create next-generation sustainable and functional composites. However, existing hybrid-living mycelium composites (myco-composites) are tremendously constrained by conventional mold-based manufacturing processes, which are only compatible with simple geometries and coarse biomass substrates that enable gas exchange. Here we introduce a class of structural myco-composites manufactured with a novel platform that harnesses high-resolution biocomposite additive manufacturing and robust mycelium colonization with indirect inoculation. We leverage principles of hierarchical composite design and selective nutritional provision to create a robust myco-composite that is scalable, tunable, and compatible with complex geometries. To illustrate the versatility of this platform, we characterize the impact of mycelium colonization on mechanical and surface properties of the composite. We found that our method yields the strongest mycelium composite reported to date with a modulus of 160 MPa and tensile strength of 0.72 MPa, which represents over a 15-fold improvement over typical mycelium composites, and further demonstrate unique applications with fabrication of foldable bio-welded containers and flexible mycelium textiles. This study bridges the gap between biocomposite and hybrid-living materials research, opening the door to advanced structural mycelium applications and demonstrating a novel platform for development of diverse hybrid-living materials.

Bioinspired Confined Assembly of Cellulosic Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Bubbles

Construction of biomimetic models for structural color evolution not only gives new photonic phenomena but also provide cues for biological morphogenesis. Here, a novel confined self-assembly method is proposed for the generation of hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC)-based cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) microbubbles. The assembly process relies on the combination of droplet microfluidics, solvent extraction, and a volume confined environment. The as-prepared HPC structural color microbubbles have a transparent shell, an orderly arranged cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) middle layer, and an innermost bubble core. The size of the microbubble, shell thickness, and the color of the CLC layer can be adjusted by altering the microfluidic parameters. Intriguingly, benefited from the compartmentalization effect provided by droplet microfluidics, microbubbles with multiple cores of different color combinations are generated under precise control. The self-assembled CLCs microbubbles have bright structural color, suspending ability, and good temperature-sensitive characteristics, making them ideal underwater sensors. The present confined assembly approach will shed light on creating novel photonic structures and the HPC microbubble will find widespread applications in multifunctional sensing, optical display, and other related fields are believed.

Deformation-Induced Photoprogrammable Pattern of Polyurethane Elastomers Based on Poisson Effect

Elastomers with high aspect ratio surface patterns are a promising class of materials for designing soft machines in the future. Here, a facile method for fabricating surface patterns on polyurethane elastomer by subtly utilizing the Poisson effect and gradient photocrosslinking is demonstrated. By applying uniaxial tensile strains, the aspect ratio of the surface patterns can be optionally manipulated. At prestretched state, the pattern on the polyurethane elastomer can be readily constructed through compressive stress, resulting from the gradient photocrosslinking via selective photodimerization of an anthracene-functionalized polyurethane elastomer (referred to as ANPU). The macromolecular aggregation structures during stretching deformation significantly contribute to the fabrication of high aspect ratio surface patterns. The insightful finite element analysis well demonstrates that the magnitude and distribution of internal stress in the ANPU elastomer can be regulated by selectively gradient crosslinking, leading to polymer chains migrate from the exposed region to the unexposed region, thereby generating a diverse array of surface patterns. Additionally, the periodic surface patterns exhibit tunable structural color according to the different stretching states and are fully reversible over multiple cycles, opening up avenues for diverse applications such as smart displays, stretchable strain sensors, and anticounterfeiting devices.

Sustainable Cellulose-Derived Organic Photonic Gels with Tunable and Dynamic Structural Color

Structural color is a fascinating optical phenomenon arising from intricate light-matter interactions. Biological structural colors from natural polymers are invaluable in biomimetic design and sustainable construction. Here, we report a renewable, abundant, and biodegradable cellulose-derived organic gel that generates stable cholesteric liquid crystal structures with vivid structural colors. We construct the chromatic gel using a 68 wt % hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) matrix, incorporating distinct polyethylene glycol (PEG) guest molecules. The PEGs contain peculiar end groups with tailored polarity, allowing for precise positioning on the HPC helical backbone through electrostatic repulsion between the PEG and HPC chains. This preserves the HPC's chiral nematic phase without being disrupted. We demonstrate that the PEGs' polarity tunes the HPC gel's reflective color. Additionally, gels with variable polarities are highly sensitive to temperature, pressure, and stretching, resulting in rapid, continuous, and reversible color changes. These exceptional dynamic traits establish the chiral nematic gel as an outstanding candidate for next-generation applications across displays, wearables, flexible electronics, health monitoring, and multifunctional sensors.

Multicomponent structural color membrane based on soft lithography array for high-sensitive Raman detection

Inspired by ordered photonic crystals and structural color materials in nature, we successfully prepared hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) photonic films with ordered surface arrays by double-imprint soft lithography. Then we introduced another important material of the cellulose family, cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), which has liquid crystal nature and birefringent properties of the particles, into the system to realize the single-point shrinkage of the film array and the control of structural color. Through multi-component doping and concentration control, we further optimized the multi-scale structure of the materials, and obtained HPC/CNCs composite photonic films with excellent properties in color, stability and flexibility, whose elastic modulus and tensile properties are significantly higher than those of single-component. Further loading of SiO2@PDA enhances the color saturation and realizes the in-situ reduction of metal ions on the film surface. This plasma film can track a variety of substances with high sensitivity and long-term stability, showing potential application prospects in the field of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), which provides a potential possibility for chiral structures to be used in the field of biosensor detection and circularly polarized luminescence.

Dynamic Color-Switching of Hydrogel Micropillar Array under Ethanol Vapor for Optical Encryption

Responsive structural colors from artificially engineered micro/nanostructures are critical to the development of anti-counterfeiting, optical encryption, and intelligent display. Herein, the responsive structural color of hydrogel micropillar array is demonstrated under the external stimulus of ethanol vapor. Micropillar arrays with full color are fabricated via femtosecond laser direct writing by controlling the height and diameter of the micropillars according to the FDTD simulation. Color-switching of the micropillar arrays is achieved in <1 s due to the formation of liquid film among micropillars. More importantly, the structural color blueshift of the micropillar arrays is sensitive to the micropillar diameter, instead of the micropillar height. The micropillar array with a diameter of 772 nm takes 400 ms to complete blueshift under ethanol vapor, while that with a diameter of 522 nm blueshifts at 2400 ms. Microscale patterns are realized by employing the size-dependent color-switching of designed micropillar arrays under ethanol vapor. Moreover, Morse code and directional blueshift of structural colors are realized in the micropillar arrays. The advantages of controllable color-switching of the hydrogel micropillar array would be prospective in the areas of optical encryption, dynamic display, and anti-counterfeiting.

Resonant-Cavity-Enhanced Electrochromic Materials and Devices

With rapid advances in optoelectronics, electrochromic materials and devices have received tremendous attentions from both industry and academia for their strong potentials in wearable and portable electronics, displays/billboards, adaptive camouflage, tunable optics, and intelligent devices, etc. However, conventional electrochromic materials and devices typically present some serious limitations such as undesirable dull colors, and long switching time, hindering their deeper development. Optical resonators have been proven to be the most powerful platform for providing strong optical confinement and controllable lightmatter interactions. They generate locally enhanced electromagnetic near-fields that can convert small refractive index changes in electrochromic materials into high-contrast color variations, enabling multicolor or even panchromatic tuning of electrochromic materials. Here, resonant-cavity-enhanced electrochromic materials and devices, an advanced and emerging trend in electrochromics, are reviewed. In this review, w e will focus on the progress in multicolor electrochromic materials and devices based on different types of optical resonators and their advanced and emerging applications, including multichromatic displays, adaptive visible camouflage, visualized energy storage, and applications of multispectral tunability. Among these topics, principles of optical resonators, related materials/devices and multicolor electrochromic properties are comprehensively discussed and summarized. Finally, the challenges and prospects for resonant-cavity-enhanced electrochromic materials and devices are presented.

Single-Pixel-Adjustable Structural Color Fabricated Using a Spatially Modulated Femtosecond Laser

Structural colors provide a highly stable and ecofriendly dyeing mechanism. The ability to adjust structural colors by a single pixel enhances their flexibility and application range. However, achieving single-pixel control and dynamic adjustment of structural colors remain a challenge yet. In this study, we propose a coloring method involving microcurve surfaces fabricated using a spatially modulated femtosecond laser hybrid technology, which combines spatially modulated femtosecond laser-assisted wet etching and molding. The fabricated microcurve surface exhibits bright colors under white light irradiation, and the color of each pixel can be adjusted independently by changing the morphology of the modified region inside fused silica using a femtosecond laser. With the high flexibility of femtosecond laser fabrication, color lightness can be accurately controlled through the quantitative adjustment of the arrangement of microcurve surfaces in an array, and various color patterns can be fabricated through the programmable arrangement of different microcurve surfaces. Additionally, the color exhibits strong dynamic characteristics, that is, different colors correspond to different external forces.

Three-Dimensional Printing of Structural Color Using a Femtoliter Meniscus

Structural colors are produced by the diffraction of light from microstructures. The collective arrangement of substructures is a simple and cost-effective approach for structural coloration represented by colloidal self-assembly. Nanofabrication methods enable precise and flexible coloration by processing individual nanostructures, but these methods are expensive or complex. Direct integration of desired structural coloration remains difficult because of the limited resolution, material-specificity, or complexity. Here, we demonstrate three-dimensional printing of structural colors by direct writing of nanowire gratings using a femtoliter meniscus of polymer ink. This method combines a simple process, desired coloration, and direct integration at a low cost. Precise and flexible coloration is demonstrated by printing the desired structural colors and shapes. In addition, alignment-resolved selective reflection is shown for displayed image control and color synthesis. The direct integration facilitates structural coloration on various substrates, including quartz, silicon, platinum, gold, and flexible polymer films. We expect that our contribution can expand the utility of diffraction gratings across various disciplines such as surface-integrated strain sensors, transparent reflective displays, fiber-integrated spectrometers, anticounterfeiting, biological assays, and environmental sensors.

Engineering Dynamic Structural Color Pixels at Microscales by Inhomogeneous Strain-Induced Localized Topographic Change

Structural colors in homogeneous elastomeric materials predominantly exhibit uniform color changes under applied strains. However, juxtaposing mechanochromic pixels that exhibit distinct responses to applied strain remains challenging, especially on the microscale where the demand for miscellaneous spectral information increases. Here, we present a method to engineer microscale switchable color pixels by creating localized inhomogeneous strain fields at the level of individual microlines. Trenches produced by transfer casting from 2.5D structures into elastomers exhibit a uniform structural color in the unstretched state due to interference and scattering effects, while they show different colors under an applied uniaxial strain. This programmable topographic change resulting in color variation arises from strain mismatch between layers and trench width. We utilized this effect to achieve the encryption of text strings with Morse code. The effective and facile design principle is promising for diverse optical devices based on dynamic structures and topographic changes.

Mechanoluminescent-Triboelectric Bimodal Sensors for Self-Powered Sensing and Intelligent Control

Self-powered flexible devices with skin-like multiple sensing ability have attracted great attentions due to their broad applications in the Internet of Things (IoT). Various methods have been proposed to enhance mechano-optic or electric performance of the flexible devices; however, it remains challenging to realize the display and accurate recognition of motion trajectories for intelligent control. Here, we present a fully self-powered mechanoluminescent-triboelectric bimodal sensor based on micro-nanostructured mechanoluminescent elastomer, which can patterned-display the force trajectories. The deformable liquid metals used as stretchable electrode make the stress transfer stable through overall device to achieve outstanding mechanoluminescence (with a gray value of 107 under a stimulus force as low as 0.3 N and more than 2000 cycles reproducibility). Moreover, a microstructured surface is constructed which endows the resulted composite with significantly improved triboelectric performances (voltage increases from 8 to 24 V). Based on the excellent bimodal sensing performances and durability of the obtained composite, a highly reliable intelligent control system by machine learning has been developed for controlling trolley, providing an approach for advanced visual interaction devices and smart wearable electronics in the future IoT era.

High-speed laser writing of structural colors for full-color inkless printing

It is a formidable challenge to simultaneously achieve wide-gamut, high-resolution, high-speed while low-cost manufacturability, long-term stability, and viewing-angle independence in structural colors for practical applications. The conventional nanofabrication techniques fail to match the requirement in low-cost, large-scale and flexible manufacturing. Processing by pulsed lasers can achieve high throughput while suffering from a narrow gamut of ~15% sRGB or angle-dependent colors. Here, we demonstrate an all-in-one solution for ultrafast laser-produced structural colors on ultrathin hybrid films that comprise an absorbent dielectric TiAlN layer coating on a metallic TiN layer. Under laser irradiation, the absorption behaviours of the TiAlN-TiN hybrid films are tailored by photothermal-induced oxidation on the topmost TiAlN. The oxidized films exhibit double-resonance absorption, which is due to the non-trivial phase shifts both at the oxide-TiAlN interface, and at the TiAlN-TiN interface. By varying the accumulated laser fluence to modulate the oxidation depth, angle-robust structural colors with unprecedented large-gamut of ~90% sRGB are obtained. The highest printing speed reaches 10 cm²/s and the highest resolution exceeds 10000 dpi. The durability of the laser-printed colors is confirmed by fastness examination, including salt spray, double-85, light bleaching, and adhesion tests. These features render our technique to be competitive for industrial applications.

Sophisticated yet Convenient Information Encryption/Decryption Based on Synergistically Time-/Temperature-Resolved Photonic Inks

Exploring high-safety but convenient encryption and decryption technologies to combat threats of information leakage is urgently needed but remains a great challenge. Here, a synergistically time- and temperature-resolved information coding/decoding solution based on functional photonic inks is demonstrated. Encrypted messages can be stored into multiple channels with dynamic-color patterns, and information decryption is only enabled at appointed temperature and time points. Notably, the ink can be easily processed into quick-response codes and multipixel plates. With high transparency and responsive color variations controlled by ink compositions and ambient temperatures, advanced 3D stacking multichannel coding and Morse coding techniques can be applied for multi-information storage, complex anticounterfeiting, and information interference. This study paves an avenue for the design and development of dynamic photonic inks and complex encryption technologies for high-end anticounterfeiting applications.

Photonic Lignin with Tunable and Stimuli-Responsive Structural Color

Due to the growing sustainability and health requirements, structural color materials fabricated with functional natural polymers have attracted increasing attention in advanced optical and biomedical fields. Lignin has many attractive features such as great biocompatibility, ultraviolet resistance, antioxidant property, and thermostability, making it a promising natural resource to be fabricated as functional structural color materials. However, to date, the utilization of lignin as the building block for structural color materials is still a challenge due to its disordered structure. Herein, we present a strategy to transform disordered lignin into ordered "photonic lignin", in which monodisperse lignin colloidal spheres are prepared via solvent/antisolvent self-assembly, and then the periodic structure is constructed by centrifugal effect. The photonic lignin exhibits structural colors that are tunable by modulating the diameter of lignin colloidal spheres. We further demonstrate the application of photonic lignin as a natural polymer-based coating that shows bright, angle-independent, and stimuli-responsive structural colors. Moreover, the cytotoxicity assay indicates the excellent biocompatibility of photonic lignin with human skin, blood vessels, digestive systems, and other tissues, which demonstrates the great potential of photonic lignin in the applications such as implanted/wearable optical devices, advanced cosmetics, and smart food packaging.

Liquid crystal random lasers

The enthusiasm for research on liquid crystal random lasers (LCRLs) is driven by their unusual optical properties and promising potential for broad applications in manufacturing, communications, medicine and entertainment. From this perspective, we will summarize the most attractive advances in the development of LCRLs in the last decade and propose future prospects. This article will begin with a fundamental description of LCRLs, including the principle of laser generation and a description of LC substances. Then, we spend several chapters on the lasing performance control methods of LCRLs, including random lasing wavelength, threshold, and polarization properties. In addition, we analyze how the LC chiral agent structures, LC core-shell structures and new light-amplifying materials affect the design of LCRL devices. In the last chapter, we discuss the application of LCRLs in 3D displays, information encryption, biochemical sensing and other optoelectronics devices and finally end the perspective with LCRLs' likely directions in future research.

Continuous resin refilling and hydrogen bond synergistically assisted 3D structural color printing

3D photonic crystals (PCs) have attracted extensive attention due to their unique optical properties. However, fabricating 3D PCs structure by 3D printing colloidal particles is limited by control of assembly under a fast-printing speed. Here, we employ continuous digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing strategy with hydrogen bonds assisted colloidal inks for fabricating well-assembled 3D PCs structures. Stable dispersion of colloidal particles inside UV-curable system induced by hydrogen bonding and suction force induced by continuous curing manner cooperatively realize the simultaneous macroscopic printing and microscopic particle assembly, which endows volumetric color property. Structural color can be well regulated by controlling the particle diameter and printing speed, through which various complex 3D structures with desired structural color distribution and optical light-guide properties are acquired. This 3D color construction approach shows great potential in customized jewelry accessories, decoration and optical device preparation, and will innovate the development of structural color.

Designing Rewritable Dual-Mode Patterns using a Stretchable Photoresponsive Polymer via Orthogonal Photopatterning

The fabrication of dual-mode patterns in the same region of a material is a promising approach for high-density information storage, new anti-counterfeiting technologies, and highly secure encryption. However, dual-mode patterns are difficult to achieve because the two patterns in one material may interfere with each other during fabrication and usage. The development of noninterfering dual-mode patterns requires new materials and patterning techniques. Herein, a novel orthogonal photopatterning technique is reported for the fabrication of noninterfering dual-mode patterns on an azopolymer P1. P1 is a unique material that exhibits both photoinduced reversible solid-to-liquid transitions and good stretchability. In the first step of orthogonal photopatterning, patterned photonic structures are fabricated on a P1 film via masked nanoimprinting controlled by photoinduced reversible solid-to-liquid transitions. In the second step, the P1 film is stretched and irradiated with polarized light through a photomask, which generates a chromatic polarization pattern. In particular, the photonic structures and chromatic polarization in the dual-mode pattern are noninterfering. Another feature of dual-mode patterns is that they are rewritable via photo-, thermal, or solution reprocessing, which are useful for recycling and reprogramming. This study opens an avenue for the development of novel materials and techniques for photopatterning.

Fast Self-Assembly of Photonic Crystal Hydrogel for Wearable Strain and Temperature Sensor

Structural colors from photonic crystals (PCs) have attracted emerging attention in the research area of wearable sensors. Conventional self-assembly of PC takes days to weeks. Here, a fast self-assembly method of PC with horizontal precipitation of silica nanoparticles (NPs) in a polydimethylsiloxane fence, which can be completed within 1-4 h depending on the fence parameters, is introduced. The resultant PC exhibits tunable structural colors in the entire visible spectrum. With infiltration of composite hydrogels containing acrylic acid, acrylamide, chitosan, and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into the gaps of NPs to form an inverse opal PC, a structural color hydrogel that can quickly respond to different stimuli, including strain and temperature, is obtained. Moreover, with the addition of CNTs, the composite PC hydrogel can also output an electronic signal together with optical color changes. Based on these extraordinary responsive behaviors, the PC hydrogel sensor for quantitative feedback to external stimuli of stretching, bending, pressing, and thermal stimuli, with brilliant color change and electronic signal outputs simultaneously, is demonstrated. This fast-assembled PC hydrogel with excellent responsive properties has great potential for applications in wearable devices, mechanical sensors, temperature sensors, and colorimetric displays.

Reversible Photochromic Photonic Crystal Device with Dual Structural Colors

Photonic crystal (PhC) light emitter (PC-LE) devices attract extensive attention in anticounterfeiting for their manipulated light emission and iridescent structural color, but their large-scale three-dimensional fabrication is still limited by poor mechanical strength and microstructural defects. Herein, colloidal nanospheres incorporated with photoluminescent dye were assembled to three-dimensional PC-LE devices through a large-scale compressing-induced strategy, which realized dual iridescent and reversible photochromic colors. Periodically distributed refractive indices between molten molecular chains and cross-linked nanospheres generated the iridescent structural color. Subsequently, the device surface reflected another different structural color after partially removing the surface molecular chains by etching. The light emission intensity of the dye was sufficient to obtain the reversible photochromic colors. Simultaneously, the manipulation toward light emission of the photonic band gap achieved the shape of the photoluminescent intenstiy spectra that varied in accordance with the reflective peak. Furthermore, by use of screen-printing tools and transparent masking glue, the etching process became an inkless color printing process, generating a colorful bar code (2 cm × 2 cm) on the device surface. The code was reversibly displayed and encrypted through control of the reflection and emission of light. Significantly, the PC-LE devices opened up a new route for advanced display, color printing, and anticounterfeiting stickers.

Toward High Sensitivity: Perspective on Colorimetric Photonic Crystal Sensors

The sensitivity of colorimetric photonic crystal (PC) sensors have been significantly improved with the advancement of deformable structural color materials, structures design, sensing signal analysis methods, and fabrication strategies. In this perspective, the strategies toward high-sensitivity colorimetric PC sensors are discussed, from the perspectives of molecular design, single sensor construction, and multisensor assembly, which include incorporation of flexible polymer chains, construction of strong sensor-analyte interactions, incorporation of more soft materials, construction of stimuli-angle/orientation relationship, design of colorimetric sensors in series, and assembly of colorimetric PC sensors in parallel. Based on these strategies, progress of high-sensitivity colorimetric PC sensors in recent years is summarized, in terms of mechano-sensors and chemo-/biosensors. Specifically, PC based optical-electrical dual-signal sensing devices are included. Finally, the future development and challenges of high-sensitivity colorimetric PC sensors are presented, in regards to deformable properties, optical properties, analysis methods, and fabrication strategies.

Generation of Complex Tunable Multispectral Signatures with Reconfigurable Protein-Based, Plasmonic-Photonic Crystal Hybrid Nanostructures

Structurally colored materials, which rely on the interaction between visible light and nanostructures, produce brilliant color displays through fine control of light interference, diffraction, scattering, or absorption. Rationally combining different color-selective functions into a single form offers a powerful strategy to create programmable optical functions which are otherwise difficult, if not impossible to obtain. By leveraging structural protein templates, specifically silk fibroin, nanostructured materials that combine plasmonic and photonic crystal paradigms are shown here. This confluence of function enables directional, tunable, and multiple co-located optical responses derived from the interplay between surface plasmon resonance and photonic bandgap effects. Several demonstrations are shown with programmable coloration at varying viewing sides, angle, and by solvent infiltration, opening avenues for smart displays and multi-mode information encoding applications.

Halogen-doped phosphorescent carbon dots for grayscale patterning

Flexible organic materials that exhibit dynamic ultralong room temperature phosphorescence (DURTP) via photoactivation have attracted increasing research interest for their fascinating functions of reversibly writing-reading-erasing graphic information in the form of a long afterglow. However, due to the existence of a nonnegligible activation threshold for the initial exposure dose, the display mode of these materials has thus far been limited to binary patterns. By resorting to halogen element doping of carbon dots (CDs) to enhance intersystem crossing and reduce the activation threshold, we were able to produce, for the first time, a transparent, flexible, and fully programmable DURTP composite film with a reliable grayscale display capacity. Examples of promising applications in UV photography and highly confidential steganography were constructed, partially demonstrating the broad future applications of this material as a programmable platform with a high optical information density.

Structural colour enhanced microfluidics

Advances in microfluidic technology towards flexibility, transparency, functionality, wearability, scale reduction or complexity enhancement are currently limited by choices in materials and assembly methods. Organized microfibrillation is a method for optically printing well-defined porosity into thin polymer films with ultrahigh resolution. Here we demonstrate this method to create self-enclosed microfluidic devices with a few simple steps, in a number of flexible and transparent formats. Structural colour, a property of organized microfibrillation, becomes an intrinsic feature of these microfluidic devices, enabling in-situ sensing capability. Since the system fluid dynamics are dependent on the internal pore size, capillary flow is shown to become characterized by structural colour, while independent of channel dimension, irrespective of whether devices are printed at the centimetre or micrometre scale. Moreover, the capability of generating and combining different internal porosities enables the OM microfluidics to be used for pore-size based applications, as demonstrated by separation of biomolecular mixtures.

High-Precision Colorimetric Sensing by Dynamic Tracking of Solvent Diffusion in Hollow-Sphere Photonic Crystals

Expensive instruments and complicated data processing are often required to discriminate solvents with similar structures and properties. Colorimetric sensors with high selectivity, low cost, and good portability are highly desirable to simplify such detection tasks. Herein, we report the fabrication of a photonic crystal sensor based on the self-assembled resorcinol formaldehyde (RF) hollow spheres to realize colorimetric sensing of polar solvents, including homologs and isomers based on the saturated diffusion time. The diffusion of solvent molecules through the photonic crystal film exhibits a unique three-step diffusion profile accompanied by a dynamic color change, as determined by the physicochemical properties of the solvent molecules and their interactions with the polymer shells, making it possible to accurately identify the solvent type based on the dynamic reflection spectra or visual perception. With its superior selectivity and sensitivity, this single-component colorimetric sensor represents a straightforward tool for convenient solvent detection and identification.

Recent Progress in Responsive Structural Color

Structural color has been regarded as an ideal alternative to pigments because of the advantages of environmental friendliness, resistance to fading, and dynamic regulation. Responsive structural color can give real-time visible feedback to external stimuli and thus has great prospects in many applications, such as displays, sensing, anticounterfeiting, information storage, and healthcare monitoring. In this Perspective, we elucidate basic concepts, controllable fabrications, and promising applications of responsive structural colors. In particular, we systematically summarize the general regulation mode of all kinds of responsive structural color systems. First, we introduce the basic chromogenic structures as well as the regulation modes of responsive structural color. Second, we present the fabrication methods of patterned structural color. Then, the promising applications of responsive structural color systems are highlighted in detail. Finally, we present the existing challenges and future perspectives on responsive structural colors.

Reversible Mechanochromisms via Manipulating Surface Wrinkling

Mechanochromic structural-colored materials have promising applications in various domains. In this Letter, we report three types of reversible mechanochromisms in simple material systems by harnessing mechano-responsive wrinkling dynamics including (i) brightness mechanochromism (BM), (ii) hue change mechanochromism (HCM), and (iii) viewable angle mechanochromism (VAM). Upon stretching, the BM device exhibits almost a constant hue but reduces light brightness due to the postbuckling mechanics-controlled deformation, while the HCM device can change the hue from blue to red with almost constant intensity because of the linear elastic mechanics-controlled deformation. The VAM device shows a constant hue because of the thin film interference effect. However, the viewable angles decrease with increasing applied strain owing to the light scattering of wrinkles. All of the mechanochromic behaviors exhibit good reversibility and durability. We clearly elucidated the underlying mechanisms for different mechanochromisms and demonstrated their potential applications in smart displays, stretchable strain sensors, and antipeeping/anticounterfeiting devices.

A 2D material-based transparent hydrogel with engineerable interference colours

Transparent hydrogels are key materials for many applications, such as contact lens, imperceptible soft robotics and invisible wearable devices. Introducing large and engineerable optical anisotropy offers great prospect for endowing them with extra birefringence-based functions and exploiting their applications in see-through flexible polarization optics. However, existing transparent hydrogels suffer from limitation of low and/or non-fine engineerable birefringence. Here, we invent a transparent magneto-birefringence hydrogel with large and finely engineerable optical anisotropy. The large optical anisotropy factor of the embedded magnetic two-dimensional material gives rise to the large magneto-birefringence of the hydrogel in the transparent condition of ultra-low concentration, which is several orders of magnitude larger than usual transparent magnetic hydrogels. High transparency, large and tunable optical anisotropy cooperatively permit the magnetic patterning of interference colours in the hydrogel. The hydrogel also shows mechanochromic and thermochromic property. Our finding provides an entry point for applying hydrogel in optical anisotropy and colour centred fields, with several proof-of-concept applications been demonstrated.

Though transparent hydrogels with tunable optical anisotropy are attractive for soft robotics, wearable devices and optical applications, achieving large birefringence has been a challenge. Here, the authors report a transparent hydrogel with large, uniform and magnetically tunable birefringence.

Bioinspired Supramolecular Photonic Composites: Construction and Emerging Applications

Natural organisms have evolved fascinating structural colors to survive in complex natural environments. Artificial photonic composites developed by imitating the structural colors of organisms have been applied in displaying, sensing, biomedicine, and many other fields. As emerging materials, photonic composites mediated by supramolecular chemistry, namely, supramolecular photonic composites, have been designed and constructed to meet emerging application needs and challenges. This feature article mainly introduces the constructive strategies, properties, and applications of supramolecular photonic composites. First, constructive strategies of supramolecular photonic composites are summarized, including the introduction of supramolecular polymers into colloidal photonic array templates, co-assembly of colloidal particles (CPs) with supramolecular polymers, self-assembly of soft CPs, and compounding photonic elastomers with functional substances via supramolecular interactions. Supramolecular interactions endow photonic composites with attractive properties, such as stimuli-responsiveness and healability. Subsequently, the unique optical and mechanical properties of supramolecular photonic composites are summarized, and their applications in emerging fields, such as colorful coatings, real-time and visual motion monitoring, and biochemical sensors, are introduced. Finally, challenges and perspectives in supramolecular photonic composites are discussed. Large-Scale and Wide-Gamut Coloration at the Diffraction Limit in Flexible, Self-Assembled Hierarchical Nanomaterials

Unveiling physical phenomena that generate controllable structural coloration is at the center of significant research efforts due to the platform potential for the next generation of printing, sensing, displays, wearable optoelectronics components, and smart fabrics. Colors based on e-beam facilities possess high resolutions above 100k dots per inch (DPI), but limit manufacturing scales up to 4.37 cm² , while requiring rigid substrates that are not flexible. State-of-art scalable techniques, on the contrary, provide either narrow gamuts or small resolutions. A common issue of current methods is also a heterogeneous resolution, which typically changes with the color printed. Here, a structural coloration platform with broad gamuts exceeding the red, green, and blue (RGB) spectrum in inexpensive, thermally resistant, flexible, and metallic-free structures at constant 101 600 DPI (at the diffraction limit), obtained via mass-production manufacturing is demonstrated. This platform exploits a previously unexplored physical mechanism, which leverages the interplay between strong scattering modes and optical resonances excited in fully 3D dielectric nanostructures with suitably engineered longitudinal profiles. The colors obtained with this technology are scalable to any area, demonstrated up to the single wafer (4 in.). These results open real-world applications of inexpensive, high-resolution, large-scale structural colors with broad chromatic spectra.

Preparation of Structural Color on Cotton Fabric with High Color Fastness through Multiple Hydrogen Bonds between Polyphenol Hydroxyl and Lactam

Structural coloration is an important way to realize eco-friendly dyeing of textiles. Structural colored cotton fabric was obtained by fabricating a polydopamine (PDA) film on the white cotton fabric at different polymerization reaction times. PDA is prone to generate capillary tension during film formation, which damages the uniformity and interfacial bonding force of the film. Multiple hydrogen bonds will form between the lactam group of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and the phenolic hydroxyl group of PDA. The introduced hydrogen bonds will effectively enhance the interfacial bond strength and lead to structural color with high color fastness. The surface morphology of double-layer aggregates of the PDA film on structural colored cotton fabric was revealed by scanning electron microscopy. The chemical constitution of the PDA film and PVP was investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The color characteristics of structural colored cotton fabrics were analyzed by UV-vis reflectance spectroscopy and spectrophotometry.

Large-Area Fabrication of Structurally Colored and Humidity Sensitive Composite Nanofilm via Ultrasonic Spray-Coating

Intelligent structural colors have received extensive attention in recent years due to their diverse applications. However, the large-area, uniform, and cost-effective fabrication of ultra-thin structural color films is still challenging. Here, for the first time, we design and employ an ultrasonic spray-coating technique with non-toxic, green nano-silica and polyvinylpyrrolidone as raw materials, to prepare structural color films on silicon wafers. Due to the addition of polyvinylpyrrolidone, the coffee-ring effect during droplet drying is suppressed and uniform composite films are formed. We further perform a detailed study of the influence of various processing parameters including silica/polyvinylpyrrolidone concentration, substrate temperature, nozzle-to-substrate distance, and number of spray-passes on film roughness and thickness. By increasing the number of spray-passes from 10 to 30, the film thickness from 120 to 340 nm is modulated, resulting in different colors, and large-area and uniform colors on commercial round silicon wafers with 15 cm diameter are achieved. The silica/polyvinylpyrrolidone composite films show strong hydrophilicity and are sensitive to humidity changes, leading to quickly tunable and reversible structural colors. Quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation demonstrates water vapor adsorption and condensation on the nanofilm when increasing environmental humidity. Thereby, ultrasonic spray-coating as a novel film fabrication technique provides a feasible scheme for large-area preparation of intelligent structural colors.

Facile full-color printing with a single transparent ink

Structural colors are promising candidates for their antifading and eco-friendly characteristics. However, high cost and complicated processing inevitably hinder their development. Here, we propose a facile full-color structural-color inkjet printing strategy with a single transparent ink from the common polymer materials. This structural color arisen from total internal reflections is prepared by digitally printing the dome-shaped microstructure (microdome) with well-controlled morphology. By controlling the ink volume and substrate wettability, the microdome color can be continuously regulated across whole visible regions. The gamut, saturation, and lightness of the printed structural-color image are precisely adjusted via the programmable arrangement of different microdomes. With the advantages of simple manufacturing and widely available inks, this color printing approach presents great potential in imaging, decoration, sensing, and biocompatible photonics.

Photonic Particles Made by the Confined Self-Assembly of a Supramolecular Comb-Like Block Copolymer

Approaches that enable the preparation of robust polymeric photonic particles are of interest for the development of nonfading and highly reflective pigments for applications such as paints and display technologies. Here, the preparation of photonic particles that display structural color in both, aqueous suspension and the dry solid state is reported. This is achieved by exploiting the confined self-assembly of a supramolecular comb-like block copolymer (BCP) that microphase separates into a well-ordered lamellar morphology with dimensions that promote a photonic bandgap in the visible range. The comb-like BCP is formed by robust ionic interactions between poly(styrene-b-4-vinyl-pyridine) (PS-b-P4VP) BCP and dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid (DBSA), which selectively interacts with P4VP blocks. The components are combined in chloroform, and an aqueous emulsion is prepared. Evaporation of the organic solvent leads to the formation of solid microparticles with an onion-like 3D morphology. These photonic pigments display brilliant colors with reflectance spectra featuring pronounced optical bandgaps across the entire visible wavelength range with a peak reflectivity of 80-90%.

Periodic Stratified Porous Structures in Dynamic Polyelectrolyte Films Through Standing-Wave Optical Crosslinking for Structural Color

Periodic porous structures have been introduced into functional films to meet the requirements of various applications. Though many approaches have been developed to generate desired structures in polymeric films, few of them can effectively and dynamically achieve periodic porous structures. Here, a facile way is proposed to introduce periodic stratified porous structures into polyelectrolyte films. A photo-crosslinkable polyelectrolyte film of poly(ethylenimine) (PEI) and photoreactive poly(acrylic acid) derivative (PAA-N3 ) is prepared by layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly. Stratified crosslinking of the PEI/PAA-N3 film is generated basing on standing-wave optics. The periodic stratified porous structure is constructed by forming pores in noncrosslinked regions in the film. Thanks to the dynamic mobility of polyelectrolytes, this structural controlment can be repeated several times. The size of pores corresponding to the layer spacing of the film contributes to the structural colors. Furthermore, structural color patterns are fabricated in the film by selective photo-crosslinking using photomasks. Although the large-scale structural controlment in thick (micron-scale and above) films needs to be explored further, this work highlights the periodic structural controlment in polymeric films and thus presents an approach for application potentials in sensor, detection, and ink-free printing.
