Transient Covalency in Molten Uranium(III) Chloride

Uranium is arguably the most essential element in the actinide series, serving as a crucial component of nuclear fuels. While U is recognized for engaging the 5f orbitals in chemical bonds under normal conditions, little is known about its coordination chemistry and the nature of bonding interactions at extreme conditions of high temperature. Here we report experimental and computational evidence for the shrinkage of the average U-ligand distance in UCl3 upon the solid-to-molten phase transition, leading to the formation of a significant fraction of short, transient U-Cl bonds with the enhanced involvement of U 5f valence orbitals. These findings reveal that extreme temperatures create an unusual heterogeneous bonding environment around U(III) with distinct inner- and outer-coordination subshells.

Comparison of Americium(III) and Neodymium(III) Monothiophosphate Complexes

Mixed-donor ligands, such as those containing a combination of O/N or O/S, have been studied extensively for the selective extraction of trivalent actinides, especially Am3+ and Cm3+, from lanthanides during the recycling of used nuclear fuel. Oxygen/sulfur donor ligand combinations also result from the hydrolytic and/or radiolytic degradation of dithiophosphates, such as the Cyanex class of extractants, which are initially converted to monothiophosphates. To understand potential differences between the binding of such degraded ligands to Nd3+ and Am3+, the monothiophosphate complexes [M(OPS(OEt)2)5(H2O)2]2- (M3+ = Nd3+, Am3+) were prepared and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and optical spectroscopy and studied as a function of pressure up to ca. 14 GPa using diamond-anvil techniques. Although Nd3+ and Am3+ have nearly identical eight-coordinated ionic radii, these structures reveal that while the M-O bond distances in these complexes are almost equal, the M-S distances are statistically different. Moreover, for [Nd(OPS(OEt)2)5(H2O)2]2-, the hypersensitive 4I9/2 → 4G5/2 transition shifts as a function of pressure by -11 cm-1/GPa. Whereas for [Am(OPS(OEt)2)5(H2O)2]2-, the 7F0 → 7F6 transition shows a slightly stronger pressure dependence with a shift of -13 cm-1/GPa and also exhibits broadening of the 5f → 5f transitions at high pressures. These data likely indicate an increased involvement of the 5f orbitals in bonding with Am3+ relative to that of Nd3+ in these complexes.

N-Heterocyclic Carbene to Actinide d-Based π-bonding Correlates with Observed Metal-Carbene Bond Length Shortening Versus Lanthanide Congeners

Comparison of bonding and electronic structural features between trivalent lanthanide (Ln) and actinide (An) complexes across homologous series' of molecules can provide insights into subtle and overt periodic trends. Of keen interest and debate is the extent to which the valence f- and d-orbitals of trivalent Ln/An ions engage in covalent interactions with different ligand donor functionalities and, crucially, how bonding differences change as both the Ln and An series are traversed. Synthesis and characterization (SC-XRD, NMR, UV-vis-NIR, and computational modeling) of the homologous lanthanide and actinide N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes [M(C5Me5)2(X)(IMe4)] {X = I, M = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, U, Np, Pu; X = Cl, M = Nd; X = I/Cl, M = Nd, Am; and IMe4 = [C(NMeCMe)2]} reveals consistently shorter An-C vs Ln-C distances that do not substantially converge upon reaching Am3+/Nd3+ comparison. Specifically, the difference of 0.064(6) Å observed in the La/U pair is comparable to the 0.062(4) Å difference observed in the Nd/Am pair. Computational analyses suggest that the cause of this unusual observation is rooted in the presence of π-bonding with the valence d-orbital manifold in actinide complexes that is not present in the lanthanide congeners. This is in contrast to other documented cases of shorter An-ligand vs Ln-ligand distances, which are often attributed to increased 5f vs 4f radial diffusivity leading to differences in 4f and 5f orbital bonding involvement. Moreover, in these traditional observations, as the 5f series is traversed, the 5f manifold contracts such that by americium structural studies often find no statistically significant Am3+vs Nd3+ metal-ligand bond length differences.

Investigation of Pressure Effects in the Bimetallic Transplutonium Tetrazolate Complexes [(An(pmtz)2(H2O)3)2(μ-pmtz)]2(pmtz)2·nH2O (An3+ = Cm3+, Bk3+, and Cf3+)

Understanding the effects of pressure on actinide compounds is an integral part of safe nuclear waste storage in deep geologic repositories and provides a means of systematically altering the structure and properties. However, detailing how the effects of pressure evolve across the actinide series in the later elements is not typically undertaken because of the challenges of conducting research on these unstable isotopes. Here, a family of bimetallic actinide complexes, [(An(pmtz)2(H2O)3)2(μ-pmtz)]2(pmtz)2·nH2O (An3+ = Cm3+, Bk3+, and Cf3+, pmtz- = 5-(pyrimidyl)tetrazolate; Cm1, Bk1, and Cf1), are reported and represent the first structurally characterized bimetallic berkelium and californium compounds. The pressure response as determined from UV-vis-NIR transitions varies for Cm1, Bk1, and Cf1. The 5f → 5f transitions in Cm1 are notably more sensitive to pressure compared to those in Bk1 and Cf1 and show substantial bathochromic shifting of several 5f → 5f transitions. In the case of Bk1, an ingrowth of a metal-to-ligand charge-transfer transition occurs at elevated pressures because of the accessible Bk3+/Bk4+ couple. For Cf1, no substantial transition shifting or emergence of MLCT transitions is observed at elevated pressures because of the prohibitive energetics of the Cf3+/Cf4+ couple and reduced sensitivity of the 5f → 5f transitions to the local coordination environment because of the more contracted 5f shell versus Cm3+ and Bk3+.

Are 4f-Orbitals Engaged in Covalent Bonding Between Lanthanides and Triphenylphosphine Oxide? An Oxygen K-Edge X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy and Density Functional Theory Study

The bonding covalency between trivalent lanthanides (Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Eu, Gd) and triphenylphosphine oxide (TPPO) is studied by X-ray absorption spectra (XAS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations on the LnCl3(TPPO)3 complexes. The O, P, and Cl K-edge XAS for the single crystals of LnCl3(TPPO)3 were collected, and the spectra were interpreted based on DFT calculations. The O and P K-edge XAS spectra showed no significant change across the Ln series in the LnCl3(TPPO)3 complexes, unlike the Cl K-edge XAS spectra. The experimental O K-edge XAS spectra suggest no mixing between the Ln 4f- and the O 2p-orbitals in the LnCl3(TPPO)3 complexes. DFT calculations indicate that the amount of the O 2p character per Ln-O bond is less than 0.1% in the Ln 4f-based orbitals in all of the LnCl3(TPPO)3 complexes. The experimental spectra and theoretical calculations demonstrate that Ln 4f-orbitals are not engaged in the covalent bonding of lanthanides with TPPO, which contrasts the involvement of U 5f-orbitals in covalent bonding in the UO2Cl2(TPPO)2 complex. Results in this work reinforce our previous speculation that bonding covalency is potentially responsible for the extractability of monodentate organophosphorus ligands toward metal ions.

What is the nature of the uranium(iii)-arene bond?

Complexes of the form [U(η6-arene)(BH4)3] where arene = C6H6; C6H5Me; C6H3-1,3,5-R3 (R = Et, iPr, tBu, Ph); C6Me6; and triphenylene (C6H4)3 were investigated towards an understanding of the nature of the uranium-arene interaction. Density functional theory (DFT) shows the interaction energy reflects the interplay between higher energy electron rich π-systems which drive electrostatic contributions, and lower energy electron poor π-systems which give rise to larger orbital contributions. The interaction is weak in all cases, which is consistent with the picture that emerges from a topological analysis of the electron density where metrics indicative of covalency show limited dependence on the nature of the ligand - the interaction is predominantly electrostatic in nature. Complete active space natural orbital analyses reveal low occupancy U-arene π-bonding interactions dominate in all cases, while δ-bonding interactions are only found with high-symmetry and electron-rich C6Me6. Finally, both DFT and multireference calculations on a reduced, formally U(ii), congener, [U(C6Me6)(BH4)3]-, suggests the electronic structure (S = 1 or 2), and hence metal oxidation state, of such a species cannot be deduced from structural features such as arene distortion alone. We show that arene geometry strongly depends on the spin-state of the complex, but that in both spin-states the complex is best described as U(iii) with an arene-centred radical.

Stabilization of Pu(IV) in PuBr4(OPCy3)2 and Comparisons with Structurally Similar ThX4(OPR3)2 (R = Cy, Ph) Molecules

The pursuit of a trivalent plutonium halide phosphine oxide compound, e.g., "PuBr3(OPR)3," instead led to the isolation of the tetravalent trans-PuIVBr4(OPCy3)2, PuBr/Cy, compound by spontaneous oxidation of PuIII. The donating nature of phosphine oxides has allowed the isolation and characterization of PuBr/Cy by crystallographic, multinuclear NMR, solid state, and solution phase UV-vis-NIR spectroscopic techniques. The presence of a putative plutonyl(VI) complex formulated as "trans-PuVIO2Br2(OPCy3)2" was also observed spectroscopically and tentatively by single-crystal X-ray diffraction as a cocrystal of PuBr/Cy. A series of trans-ThX4(OPCy3)2 (X = Cl, ThCl/Cy; Br, ThBr/Cy; I, ThI/Cy) complexes were synthesized for comparison to PuBr/Cy. The triphenylphosphine oxide, OPPh3, complexes, trans-AnI4(OPPh3)2 (An = Th, ThI/Ph; U, UI/Ph), were also synthesized for comparison, completing the series trans-UX4(OPPh3)2 (X = Cl, Br, I), UX/Ph. To enable the synthesis of ThI/Cy and ThI/Ph, a new nonaqueous thorium iodide starting material, ThI4(Et2O)2, was synthesized. The syntheses of organic solvent soluble ThI4L2 (L = Et2O, OPCy3, and OPPh3) are the first examples of crystallographically characterized neutral thorium tetraiodide materials beyond binary ThI4. To show the viability of ThI4(Et2O)2 as a starting material for organothorium chemistry, (C5Me4H)3ThI was synthesized and crystallographically characterized.

Pressure-Induced Coordination Number Transition in Lanthanide Mellitate Coordination Polymers: Structure and Spectroscopy

High external pressure is found to induce a non-coordinated water molecule to bond to cerium in a previously studied mellitate coordination polymer, as determined by high-pressure single-crystal X-ray diffraction, resulting in a coordination number transition at 3.85 GPa from 9 to 9.5 where half the cerium ions are 10-coordinate. Also, bond length changes due to increased pressure are experimentally measured, whereas the cerium-carboxylate bond lengths overall change by -0.004(9) Å/GPa, the cerium-water bonds by -0.016(3) Å/GPa, and cerium-oxygen bonds overall by -0.010(6) Å/GPa, which corresponds well with theoretical bond length decreases determined for similar compounds. The high-pressure absorbance spectra of the analogous neodymium mellitate are examined and compared with the structural changes observed.

Altering the spectroscopy, electronic structure, and bonding of organometallic curium(III) upon coordination of 4,4'-bipyridine

Structural and electronic characterization of (Cp'₃Cm)₂(μ-4,4'-bpy) (Cp' = trimethylsilylcyclopentadienyl, 4,4'-bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine) is reported and provides a rare example of curium-carbon bonding. Cp'₃Cm displays unexpectedly low energy emission that is quenched upon coordination by 4,4'-bipyridine. Electronic structure calculations on Cp'₃Cm and (Cp'₃Cm)₂(μ-4,4'-bpy) rule out significant differences in the emissive state, rendering 4,4'-bipyridine as the primary quenching agent. Comparisons of (Cp'₃Cm)₂(μ-4,4'-bpy) with its samarium and gadolinium analogues reveal atypical bonding patterns and electronic features that offer insights into bonding between carbon with f-block metal ions. Here we show the structural characterization of a curium-carbon bond, in addition to the unique electronic properties never before observed in a curium compound.

Polyoxometalates as ligands to synthesize, isolate and characterize compounds of rare isotopes on the microgram scale

The synthesis and study of radioactive compounds are both inherently limited by their toxicity, cost and isotope scarcity. Traditional methods using small inorganic or organic complexes typically require milligrams of sample-per attempt-which for some isotopes is equivalent to the world's annual supply. Here we demonstrate that polyoxometalates (POMs) enable the facile formation, crystallization, handling and detailed characterization of metal-ligand complexes from microgram quantities owing to their high molecular weight and controllable solubility properties. Three curium-POM complexes were prepared, using just 1-10 μg per synthesis of the rare isotope 248Cm3+, and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, showing an eight-coordinated Cm3+ centre. Moreover, spectrophotometric, fluorescence, NMR and Raman analyses of several f-block element-POM complexes, including 243Am3+ and 248Cm3+, showed otherwise unnoticeable differences between their solution versus solid-state chemistry, and actinide versus lanthanide behaviour. This POM-driven strategy represents a viable path to isolate even rarer complexes, notably with actinium or transcalifornium elements.

Covalent bond shortening and distortion induced by pressurization of thorium, uranium, and neptunium tetrakis aryloxides

Covalency involving the 5f orbitals is regularly invoked to explain the reactivity, structure and spectroscopic properties of the actinides, but the ionic versus covalent nature of metal-ligand bonding in actinide complexes remains controversial. The tetrakis 2,6-di-tert-butylphenoxide complexes of Th, U and Np form an isostructural series of crystal structures containing approximately tetrahedral MO₄ cores. We show that up to 3 GPa the Th and U crystal structures show negative linear compressibility as the OMO angles distort. At 3 GPa the angles snap back to their original values, reverting to a tetrahedral geometry with an abrupt shortening of the M-O distances by up to 0.1 Å. The Np complex shows similar but smaller effects, transforming above 2.4 GPa. Electronic structure calculations associate the M-O bond shortening with a change in covalency resulting from increased contributions to the M-O bonding by the metal 6d and 5f orbitals, the combination promoting MO₄ flexibility at little cost in energy.

Advances and perspectives of actinide chemistry from ex situ high pressure and high temperature chemical studies

High pressure high temperature (HP/HT) studies of actinide compounds allow the chemistry and bonding of among the most exotic elements in the periodic table to be examined under the conditions often only found in the severest environments of nature. Peering into this realm of physical extremity, chemists have extracted detailed knowledge of the fundamental chemistry of actinide elements and how they contribute to bonding, structure formation and intricate properties in compounds under such conditions. The last decade has resulted in some of the most significant contributions to actinide chemical science and this holds true for ex situ chemical studies of actinides resulting from HP/HT conditions of over 1 GPa and elevated temperature. Often conducted in tandem with ab initio calculations, HP/HT studies of actinides have further helped guide and develop theoretical modelling approaches and uncovered associated difficulties. Accordingly, this perspective article is devoted to reviewing the latest advancements made in actinide HP/HT ex situ chemical studies over the last decade, the state-of-the-art, challenges and discussing potential future directions of the science. The discussion is given with emphasis on thorium and uranium compounds due to the prevalence of their investigation but also highlights some of the latest advancements in high pressure chemical studies of transuranium compounds. The perspective also describes technical aspects involved in HP/HT investigation of actinide compounds.

Synthesis, characterization, and high-pressure studies of a 3D berkelium(III) carboxylate framework material

A berkelium(III) mellitate, Bk₂[C₆(CO₂)₆](H₂O)₈·2H₂O, was synthesized and rapidly crystallized by reacting mellitic acid, C₆(CO₂H)₆, and BkBr₃·nH₂O in an aqueous medium. Single crystal X-ray diffraction shows that the compound crystallizes as a three-dimensional framework isostructural with Pu(III), Am(III), and Cm(III) mellitates. UV-vis-NIR spectroscopic studies as a function of pressure were performed using a diamond anvil cell and show that the 5f → 5f transitions of Bk³⁺ display enhanced hypsochromic shifting when compared to other An(III) mellitates.

Cyclopentadienyl coordination induces unexpected ionic Am-N bonding in an americium bipyridyl complex

Variations in bonding between trivalent lanthanides and actinides is critical for reprocessing spent nuclear fuel. The ability to tune bonding and the coordination environment in these trivalent systems is a key factor in identifying a solution for separating lanthanides and actinides. Coordination of 4,4'-bipyridine (4,4'-bpy) and trimethylsilylcyclopentadienide (Cp') to americium introduces unexpectedly ionic Am-N bonding character and unique spectroscopic properties. Here we report the structural characterization of (Cp'₃Am)₂(μ - 4,4'-bpy) and its lanthanide analogue, (Cp'₃Nd)₂(μ - 4,4'-bpy), by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Spectroscopic techniques in both solid and solution phase are performed in conjunction with theoretical calculations to probe the effects the unique coordination environment has on the electronic structure.

[AnI3(THF)4] (An = Np, Pu) Preparation Bypassing An0 Metal Precursors: Access to Np3+/Pu3+ Nonaqueous and Organometallic Complexes

Direct comparison of homologous molecules provides a foundation from which to elucidate both subtle and patent changes in reactivity patterns, redox processes, and bonding properties across a series of elements. While trivalent molecular U chemistry is richly developed, analogous Np or Pu research has long been hindered by synthetic routes often requiring scarcely available metallic-phase source material, high-temperature solid-state reactions producing poorly soluble binary halides, or the use of pyrophoric reagents. The development of routes to nonaqueous Np³⁺/Pu³⁺ from widely available precursors can potentially transform the scope and pace of research into actinide periodicity. Here, aqueous stocks of An⁴⁺ (An = Np, Pu) are dehydrated to well-defined [AnCl₄(DME)₂] (DME = 1,2-dimethoxyethane), and then a single-step halide exchange/reduction employing Me₃SiI produces [AnI₃(THF)₄] (THF = tetrahydrofuran) in a high to nearly quantitative crystalline yield (with I₂ and Me₃SiCl as easily removed byproducts). We demonstrate the synthetic utility of these An-iodide molecules, prepared by metal⁰-free routes, through characterization of archetypal complexes including the tris-silylamide, [Np{N(SiMe₃)₂}₃], and bent metallocenes, [An(C₅Me₅)₂(I)(THF)] (An = Np, Pu)─chosen because both motifs are ubiquitous in Th, U, and lanthanide research. The synthesis of [Np{N(Se═PPh₂)₂}₃] is also reported, completing an isomorphous series that now extends from U to Am and is the first characterized Np³⁺-Se bond.

Creation of an unexpected plane of enhanced covalency in cerium(III) and berkelium(III) terpyridyl complexes

Controlling the properties of heavy element complexes, such as those containing berkelium, is challenging because relativistic effects, spin-orbit and ligand-field splitting, and complex metal-ligand bonding, all dictate the final electronic states of the molecules. While the first two of these are currently beyond experimental control, covalent M‒L interactions could theoretically be boosted through the employment of chelators with large polarizabilities that substantially shift the electron density in the molecules. This theory is tested by ligating BkIII with 4'-(4-nitrophenyl)-2,2':6',2"-terpyridine (terpy*), a ligand with a large dipole. The resultant complex, Bk(terpy*)(NO3)3(H2O)·THF, is benchmarked with its closest electrochemical analog, Ce(terpy*)(NO3)3(H2O)·THF. Here, we show that enhanced Bk‒N interactions with terpy* are observed as predicted. Unexpectedly, induced polarization by terpy* also creates a plane in the molecules wherein the M‒L bonds trans to terpy* are shorter than anticipated. Moreover, these molecules are highly anisotropic and rhombic EPR spectra for the CeIII complex are reported.

Covalency of Trivalent Actinide Ions with Different Donor Ligands: Do Density Functional and Multiconfigurational Wavefunction Calculations Corroborate the Observed "Breaks"?

A comprehensive ab initio study of periodic actinide-ligand bonding trends for trivalent actinides is performed. Relativistic density functional theory (DFT) and complete active-space (CAS) self-consistent field wavefunction calculations are used to dissect the chemical bonding in the [AnCl₆]^3-, [An(CN)₆]^3-, [An(NCS)₆]^3-, [An(S₂PMe₂)₃], [An(DPA)₃]^3-, and [An(HOPO)]^- series of actinide (An = U-Es) complexes. Except for some differences for the early actinide complexes with DPA, bond orders and excess 5f-shell populations from donation bonding show qualitatively similar trends in 5f ⁿ active-space CAS vs DFT calculations. The influence of spin-orbit coupling on donation bonding is small for the tested systems. Along the actinide series, chemically soft vs chemically harder ligands exhibit clear differences in bonding trends. There are pronounced changes in the 5f populations when moving from Pu to Am or Cm, which correlate with previously noted "breaks" in chemical trends. Bonding involving 5f becomes very weak beyond Cm/Bk. We propose that Cm(III) is a borderline case among the trivalent actinides that can be meaningfully considered to be involved in ground-state 5f covalent bonding.

Mechanomaterials: A Rational Deployment of Forces and Geometries in Programming Functional Materials

The knowledge of mechanics of materials has been extensively implemented in developing functional materials, giving rise to recent advances in soft actuators, flexible electronics, mechanical metamaterials, tunable mechanochromics, regenerative mechanomedicine, etc. While conventional mechanics of materials offers passive access to mechanical properties of materials in existing forms, a paradigm shift is emerging toward proactive programming of materials' functionality by leveraging the force-geometry-property relationships. Here, such a rising field is coined as "mechanomaterials". To profile the concept, the design principles in this field at four scales is first outlined, namely the atomic scale, the molecular scale, the manipulation of nanoscale materials, and the microscale design of structural materials. A variety of techniques have been recruited to deliver the multiscale programming of functional mechanomaterials, such as strain engineering, capillary assembly, topological interlocking, kirigami, origami, to name a few. Engineering optical and biological functionalities have also been achieved by implementing the fundamentals of mechanochemistry and mechanobiology. Nonetheless, the field of mechanomaterials is still in its infancy, with many open challenges and opportunities that need to be addressed. The authors hope this review can serve as a modest spur to attract more researchers to further advance this field.

Theoretical Insights into Transplutonium Element Separation with Electronically Modulated Phenanthroline-Derived Bis-Triazine Ligands

In the process of spent fuel reprocessing, it is highly difficult to extract transplutonium elements from adjacent actinides. A deep understanding of the electronic structure of transplutonium complexes is essential for development of steady ligands for in-group separation of transplutonium actinides. In this work, we have systematically explored the potential in-group separation ability of transplutonium elements of typical quadridentate N-donor ligands (phenanthroline-derived bis-triazine, BTPhen derivatives) through quasi-relativistic density functional theory (DFT). Our calculations demonstrate that ligands with electron-donating groups have stronger coordination abilities, and the substitutions of Br and phenol at the 4-position of the 1,10-phenanthroline have a higher effect on the ligand than those at the 5-position. Bonding analysis indicates that the covalent interaction of An³⁺ complexes becomes stronger from Am to Cf apart from Cm, which is because the energy of the 5f orbital gradually decreases and becomes energy-degenerate with the 2p orbitals of ligands. The most negative values of binding energies indicate the higher stability of Cf³⁺ complexes, in line with the larger covalency in the Cf-L bonds compared with An-L (An = Am, Cm, Bk). In addition, electron-donating group phenol can enhance the covalent interaction between ligands and heavy actinides. Consequently, the extraction ability of ligands with electron-donating substituents for heavy actinides is generally stronger than other ligands. Nevertheless, these ligands exhibit diverse separation abilities to in-group actinide recovery. Therefore, the enhancement of covalency does not necessarily lead to the improvement of separation ability, which may be caused by different extraction abilities. Compared with the tetradentate N, O-donor ligands (2,9-diamide-1,10-phenanthrolinel, DAPhen derivatives), species with BTPhen ligands display stronger covalent interaction and higher extraction capacity. In terms of in-group separation ability, the BTPhen ligands seem to have advantages in separation of californium from curium, while the DAPhen ligands possess stronger abilities to separate americium from curium. These results may afford some afflatus for the development of effective agents for in-group separation of transplutonium elements.

High-Frequency and -Field Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectroscopic Analysis of Metal-Ligand Covalency in a 4f7 Valence Series (Eu2+, Gd3+, and Tb4+)

The recent isolation of molecular tetravalent lanthanide complexes has enabled renewed exploration of the effect of oxidation state on the single-ion properties of the lanthanide ions. Despite the isotropic nature of the ⁸S ground state in a tetravalent terbium complex, [Tb(NP(1,2-bis-^tBu-diamidoethane)(NEt₂))₄], preliminary X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements on tetravalent terbium complexes show rich spectra with broad resonances. The complexity of these spectra highlights the limits of conventional X-band EPR for even qualitative determination of zero-field splitting (ZFS) in these complexes. Therefore, we report the synthesis and characterization of a novel valence series of 4f⁷ molecular complexes spanning three oxidation states (Eu²⁺, Gd³⁺, and Tb⁴⁺) featuring a weak-field imidophosphorane ligand system, and employ high-frequency and -field electron paramagnetic resonance (HFEPR) to obtain quantitative values for ZFS across this valence series. The series was designed to minimize deviation in the first coordination sphere from the pseudotetrahedral geometry in order to directly interrogate the role of metal identity and charge on the complexes' electronic structures. These HFEPR studies are supported by crystallographic analysis and quantum-chemical calculations to assess the relative covalent interactions in each member of this valence series and the effect of the oxidation state on the splitting of the ground state and first excited state.

Beyond structural motifs: the frontier of actinide-containing metal-organic frameworks

In this perspective, we feature recent advances in the field of actinide-containing metal-organic frameworks (An-MOFs) with a main focus on their electronic, catalytic, photophysical, and sorption properties. This discussion deviates from a strictly crystallographic analysis of An-MOFs, reported in several reviews, or synthesis of novel structural motifs, and instead delves into the remarkable potential of An-MOFs for evolving the nuclear waste administration sector. Currently, the An-MOF field is dominated by thorium- and uranium-containing structures, with only a few reports on transuranic frameworks. However, some of the reported properties in the field of An-MOFs foreshadow potential implementation of these materials and are the main focus of this report. Thus, this perspective intends to provide a glimpse into the challenges, triumphs, and future directions of An-MOFs in sectors ranging from the traditional realm of gas sorption and separation to recently emerging areas such as electronics and photophysics.

Structural and Spectroscopic Comparison of Soft-Se vs. Hard-O Donor Bonding in Trivalent Americium/Neodymium Molecules

Covalency is often considered to be an influential factor in driving An³⁺ vs. Ln³⁺ selectivity invoked by soft donor ligands. This is intensely debated, particularly the extent to which An³⁺ /Ln³⁺ covalency differences prevail and manifest as the f-block is traversed, and the effects of periodic breaks beyond Pu. Herein, two Am complexes, [Am{N(E=PPh₂ )₂ }₃ ] (1-Am, E=Se; 2-Am, E=O) are compared to isoradial [Nd{N(E=PPh₂ )₂ }₃ ] (1-Nd, 2-Nd) complexes. Covalent contributions are assessed and compared to U/La and Pu/Ce analogues. Through ab initio calculations grounded in UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray structures, we observe differences in f orbital involvement between Am-Se and Nd-Se bonds, which are not present in O-donor congeners.

Pronounced Pressure Dependence of Electronic Transitions for Americium Compared to Isomorphous Neodymium and Samarium Mellitates

The mellitate ion is relevant in spent nuclear fuel processing and is utilized as a surrogate for studying the interactions of f elements with humic acids. A wealth of different coordination modes gives the potential for diverse structural chemistry across the actinide series. In this study, an americium mellitate, ²⁴³Am₂[(C₆(COO^-)₆](H₂O)₈·2H₂O (1-Am), has been synthesized and characterized using structural analysis and spectroscopy at ambient and elevated pressures. 1-Am was then compared to isomorphous neodymium (1-Nd) and samarium (1-Sm) mellitates via bond-length analysis and pressure dependence of their Laporte-forbidden f → f transitions. Results show that the pressure dependence of the f → f transitions of 1-Am is significantly greater than that observed in 1-Nd and 1-Sm, with average shifts of 21.4, 4.7, and 3.6 cm^-1/GPa, respectively. This greater shift found in 1-Am shows further evidence that the 5f orbitals are more affected than the 4f orbitals when pressure is applied to isostructural compounds.
