Complete sequences of two novel bla NDM-1-harbouring plasmids from two Acinetobacter towneri isolates in China associated with the acquisition of Tn125

Molecular mechanism of plasmid-borne resistance to sulfonamide antibiotics

The sulfonamides (sulfas) are the oldest class of antibacterial drugs and inhibit the bacterial dihydropteroate synthase (DHPS, encoded by folP), through chemical mimicry of its co-substrate p-aminobenzoic acid (pABA). Resistance to sulfa drugs is mediated either by mutations in folP or acquisition of sul genes, which code for sulfa-insensitive, divergent DHPS enzymes. While the molecular basis of resistance through folP mutations is well understood, the mechanisms mediating sul-based resistance have not been investigated in detail. Here, we determine crystal structures of the most common Sul enzyme types (Sul1, Sul2 and Sul3) in multiple ligand-bound states, revealing a substantial reorganization of their pABA-interaction region relative to the corresponding region of DHPS. We use biochemical and biophysical assays, mutational analysis, and in trans complementation of E. coli ΔfolP to show that a Phe-Gly sequence enables the Sul enzymes to discriminate against sulfas while retaining pABA binding and is necessary for broad resistance to sulfonamides. Experimental evolution of E. coli results in a strain harboring a sulfa-resistant DHPS variant that carries a Phe-Gly insertion in its active site, recapitulating this molecular mechanism. We also show that Sul enzymes possess increased active site conformational dynamics relative to DHPS, which could contribute to substrate discrimination. Our results reveal the molecular foundation for Sul-mediated drug resistance and facilitate the potential development of new sulfas less prone to resistance.

Microbial paracetamol degradation involves a high diversity of novel amidase enzyme candidates

Pharmaceuticals are relatively new to nature and often not completely removed in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Consequently, these micropollutants end up in water bodies all around the world posing a great environmental risk. One exception to this recalcitrant conversion is paracetamol, whose full degradation has been linked to several microorganisms. However, the genes and corresponding proteins involved in microbial paracetamol degradation are still elusive. In order to improve our knowledge of the microbial paracetamol degradation pathway, we inoculated a bioreactor with sludge of a hospital WWTP (Pharmafilter, Delft, NL) and fed it with paracetamol as the sole carbon source. Paracetamol was fully degraded without any lag phase and the enriched microbial community was investigated by metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analyses, which demonstrated that the microbial community was very diverse. Dilution and plating on paracetamol-amended agar plates yielded two Pseudomonas sp. isolates: a fast-growing Pseudomonas sp. that degraded 200 mg/L of paracetamol in approximately 10 h while excreting 4-aminophenol, and a slow-growing Pseudomonas sp. that degraded paracetamol without obvious intermediates in more than 90 days. Each Pseudomonas sp. contained a different highly-expressed amidase (31% identity to each other). These amidase genes were not detected in the bioreactor metagenome suggesting that other as-yet uncharacterized amidases may be responsible for the first biodegradation step of paracetamol. Uncharacterized deaminase genes and genes encoding dioxygenase enzymes involved in the catabolism of aromatic compounds and amino acids were the most likely candidates responsible for the degradation of paracetamol intermediates based on their high expression levels in the bioreactor metagenome and the Pseudomonas spp. genomes. Furthermore, cross-feeding between different community members might have occurred to efficiently degrade paracetamol and its intermediates in the bioreactor. This study increases our knowledge about the ongoing microbial evolution towards biodegradation of pharmaceuticals and points to a large diversity of (amidase) enzymes that are likely involved in paracetamol metabolism in WWTPs.

Genome Sequence of Acinetobacter towneri Strain DSM 16313, Previously Known as the Proposed Type Strain of Acinetobacter seohaensis

Acinetobacter species are widely distributed in the environment and clinical settings worldwide. We report the 2.99-Mbp draft genome sequence of Acinetobacter towneri strain DSM 16313, which was isolated from seawater in South Korea and proposed as a type strain of Acinetobacter seohaensis. Genome comparisons demonstrated that A. seohaensis should be reclassified as A. towneri.

Emergence of a multidrug-resistant plasmid encoding bla NDM-1, bla OXA-420 and armA in a clinical isolate of Acinetobacter variabilis in Japan

Acinetobacter variabilis (formerly genospecies 15 sensu Tjernberg and Ursing) has been isolated from humans and animals and was proposed to be a novel species in 2015. A multidrug-resistant A. variabilis isolate, RYU24, was obtained in 2012 from an inpatient in Okinawa, Japan, with no record of overseas travel. The isolate was resistant to carbapenems, aminoglycosides and ciprofloxacin, with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 32 µg ml^-1 for imipenem and meropenem; > 1024 µg ml^-1 for amikacin, arbekacin, gentamicin and tobramycin; and 8 µg ml^-1 for ciprofloxacin. The isolate was found to harbour a 68-kbp plasmid carrying bla _NDM-1, which encodes New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase-1 (NDM-1); bla _OXA-420, which encodes an OXA-58-like carbapenemase and; armA, which encodes ArmA 16S rRNA methylase conferring pan-aminoglycoside resistance. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a plasmid harbouring the three major drug-resistance genes, bla _NDM-1, bla _OXA-420 and armA.

Cunning plasmid fusion mediates antibiotic resistance genes represented by ESBLs encoding genes transfer in foodborne Salmonella

Foodborne disease caused by antibiotic resistant Salmonella is quite difficult to deal with. In order to further explore the antibiotic resistance associated with gene transfer among foodborne Salmonella, several wild-type Salmonella strains were used as donors and recipients, respectively, to investigate how extended spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) encoding genes co-transfer with transposable elements to transmit antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic susceptibility was determined by agar dilution method, the transposase encoding gene was detected via PCR combined with DNA sequencing, S1 nuclease and pulsed field gel electrophoresis (S1-PFGE), and southern-blot. Illumina HiSeq 4000 platform and Nanopore MinION long-read sequencing technology were used to determine the antibiotic resistance encoding genes (ARGs) and their surrounding gene environment. The results indicated that the conjugation frequency was from ×10^-4 to ×10^-5 per recipient cell. A 185,608-bp-long DNA fragment and two short backbone protein encoding regions in pG19 in the donor fused with part genes in pS3 in the recipient during conjugation, the size of this fusion plasmid is as same as that of pG19. Cefoxitin resistance of the transconjugant was mediated by a tnpA21-related bla_DHA-1 transfer. Resistance of Salmonella to ceftriaxone, cefoperazone and ceftiofur was mediated by a tnpU1548 related bla_TEM-1B and bla_CTX-M-3 transfer. The study indicated that transposase synergy and plasmid selective fusion act as important roles for foodborne Salmonella gathering ARGs. The consistent size of the plasmid before and after fusion suggested the invisibility and complexity of bacterial conjugation without DNA sequencing, the fact reminded us that the rampant transmission of antibiotic-resistance encoding genes would pose tremendous threat to food safety.

First detection of a plasmid-encoded New-Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase-1 (NDM-1) producing Acinetobacter baumannii using whole genome sequencing, isolated in a clinical setting in Benin

BACKGROUND

Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii is considered a top priority pathogen by the World Health Organization for combatting increasing antibiotic resistance and development of new drugs. Since it was originally reported in Klebsiella pneumoniae in 2009, the quick spread of the bla_NDM-1 gene encoding a New-Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase-1 (NDM-1) is increasingly recognized as a serious threat. This gene is usually carried by large plasmids and has already been documented in diverse bacterial species, including A. baumannii. Here, we report the first detection of a NDM-1-producing A. baumannii strain isolated in Benin.

CASE PRESENTATION

A 31-year-old woman was admitted to a surgical unit with a diagnosis of post-cesarean hematoma. An extensively-drug resistant A. baumannii strain solely susceptible to amikacin, colistin and ciprofloxacin, and resistant to several other antibiotics including ceftazidime, imipenem, meropenem, gentamicin, tobramycin, ceftazidime/avibactam, and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim, was isolated from the wound. Production of NDM-1 was demonstrated by immunochromatographic testing. Whole genome sequencing of the isolate confirmed the presence of bla_NDM-1, but also antibiotic resistance genes against multiple beta-lactamases and other classes of antibiotics, in addition to several virulence genes. Moreover, the bla_NDM-1 gene was found to be present in a Tn125 transposon integrated on a plasmid.

CONCLUSIONS

The discovery of this extensively-drug resistant A. baumannii strain carrying bla_NDM-1 in Benin is worrying, especially because of its high potential risk of horizontal gene transfer due to being integrated into a transposon located on a plasmid. Strict control and prevention measures should be taken, once NDM-1 positive A. baumannii has been identified to prevent transfer of this resistance gene to other Enterobacterales. Capacity building is required by governmental agencies to provide suitable antibiotic treatment options and strategies, in combination with strengthening laboratory services for detection and surveillance of this pathogen.

Iminodiacetic Acid as a Novel Metal-Binding Pharmacophore for New Delhi Metallo-β-lactamase Inhibitor Development

The fungal natural product aspergillomarasmine A (AMA) has been identified as a noncompetitive inhibitor of New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase-1 (NDM-1) that inhibits by removing ZnII from the active-site. The nonselective metal-chelating properties and difficult synthesis and derivatization of AMA have hindered the development of this scaffold into a potent and selective inhibitor of NDM-1. Iminodiacetic acid (IDA) has been identified as the metal-binding pharmacophore (MBP) core of AMA that can be leveraged for inhibitor development. Herein, we report the use of IDA for fragment-based drug discovery (FBDD) of NDM-1 inhibitors. IDA (IC50 =120 μM) was developed into inhibitor 23 f (IC50 =8.6 μM, Ki =2.6 μM), which formed a ternary complex with NDM-1, as evidenced by protein thermal-shift and native-state electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) experiments. Combining mechanistic analysis with inhibitor derivatization, the use of IDA as an alternative AMA scaffold for NDM-1 inhibitor development is detailed.

What do we know about plasmids carried by members of the Acinetobacter genus?

Several Acinetobacter spp. act as opportunistic pathogens causing healthcare-associated infections worldwide, and in this respect their ability to resist antimicrobial compounds has certainly boosted up their global propagation. Acinetobacter clinical strains have demonstrated a remarkable ability to evolve and become resistant to almost all available drugs in the antimicrobial arsenal, including the last-resort carbapenem β-lactams. The dissemination of antimicrobial resistant genes (ARG), heavy metals-detoxification systems and other traits such as virulence factors is facilitated by mobile genetic elements (MGE) through horizontal gene transfer. Among them, plasmids have been shown to play a critical role in this genus. Despite the continuous increase of Acinetobacter plasmid sequences present in databases, there are no reports describing the basic traits carried by these MGE. To fill this gap, a broad analysis of the Acinetobacter plasmidome was performed. A search for Acinetobacter complete plasmids indicated that 905 sequences have been deposited in the NCBI-GenBank public database, of which 492 are harbored by Acinetobacter baumannii strains. Plasmid-classification schemes based on Rep proteins homology have so far described 23 different groups for A. baumannii (GR1-23), and 16 Acinetobacter Rep3 Groups (AR3G1-16) for the complete genus. Acinetobacter plasmids size ranges from 1.3 to 400 kb. Interestingly, widespread plasmids which are < 20 kb make up 56% of the total present in members of this genus. This led to the proposal of Acinetobacter plasmid assignation to two groups according to their size (< 20 kb and > 20 kb). Usually, smaller plasmids are not self-transmissible, and thereby employ alternative mechanisms of dissemination. For instance, a subgroup of < 20 kb-plasmids belonging to the pRAY-family, lack a rep gene, but encode a relaxase enabling their mobilization by conjugative plasmids. Other subgroup, including small GR2 Acinetobacter plasmids, does not encode a relaxase gene. However, they could still be mobilized by conjugative plasmids which recognize an oriT region carried by these small plasmids. Also, these < 20 kb-plasmids usually carry accessory genes bordered by XerC/D-recombinases recognition sites which have been hypothesized to mediate plasmid plasticity. Conversely, many cases of larger plasmids are self-transmissible and might encode virulence factors and their regulators, thus controlling strain pathogenicity. The ARGs carried by the > 20 kb-plasmids are usually encoded within other MGEs such as transposons, or as part of integrons. It has been recently noted that some of the > 20 kb-plasmids are derived from excised phages, and thus dubbed as phage-like plasmids. All in all, the plethora of plasmids found in strains of this genus and the multiple strategies promoting their evolution and dissemination have certainly contributed to survival of the Acinetobacter members in different habitats, including the clinical environment.

An NDM-1-Producing Acinetobacter towneri Isolate from Hospital Sewage in China

Background

The New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase-1 (NDM-1)-positive plasmid and its variants pose daunting threats to public health. Hospital sewage was considered as an important reservoir of antibiotic genes. Numerous and diverse taxa of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria carrying NDM-1-positive plasmids have been identified during routine surveillance of hospital sewage. We herein report a carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter towneri strain AeBJ009 with an NDM-1-positive plasmid isolated from hospital sewage.

Materials and Methods

Bacteria were isolated from cultures of hospital sewage and identified by using the Vitek 2 compact system and 16S rRNA sequencing. The bla _NDM-1 gene was amplified and confirmed by sequencing. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed using AST-GN14 on the Vitek2 compact system. In addition, the bla _NDM-1 gene was located by Southern blotting. Conjugation experiment and whole-genome sequencing were performed for further analysis.

Results

Strain AeBJ009 was isolated from hospital sewage and identified as A. towneri. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing revealed an MDR phenotype. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and Southern blotting showed that strain AeBJ009 carries three plasmids and that bla _NDM-1 is located on the 47kb plasmid pNDM-AeBJ009. However, the conjugation experiment to transfer pNDM-AeBJ009 to Escherichia coli strain J53 was unsuccessful. Whole-genome sequencing found that pNDM-AeBJ009 contains a Tn125 element carrying bla _NDM-1 . The ble gene downstream of bla _NDM-1 displayed a single-nucleotide polymorphism compared to its homologue on plasmid pM131_NDM1. BLAST analysis using the Comprehensive Antibiotic Resistance Database identified no gene polymorphisms with 100% identity to our ble variant.

Conclusion

The A. towneri strain AeBJ009 exhibiting an extended spectrum of antibiotic resistance was isolated from hospital sewage and may potentially exacerbate the risk of MDR bacterial infections. The prevention of nosocomial infections due to drug-resistant bacteria will require enhanced monitoring and control of MDR pathogens in environmental reservoirs.

Whole-Genome Analysis of Two Copies of bla NDM-1 Gene Carrying Acinetobacter johnsonii Strain Acsw19 Isolated from Sichuan, China

Purpose

To characterize the genetic feature of the carbapenems resistant Acinetobacter johnsonii strain Acsw19 isolated from municipal sludge. This strain was found to carry two copies of bla _NDM-1, cmlB1-like gene, and bla _OXA-211-like gene along with other 8 antimicrobial resistance genes, 3 plasmids, 15 genomic islands and 8 prophages.

Methods

A carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter johnsonii strain Acsw19 isolated from municipal sludge was subjected to whole-genome sequencing (WGS) via the PacBio and Illumina MiSeq platforms. Thereafter, the characteristic was analyzed by a series of bioinformatics software.

Results

The results showed that the genome of Acsw19 was consisted of a 3,433,749 bp circular chromosome and 3 circular plasmids, pAcsw19-1 (11,161 bp), pAcsw19-2 (351,885 bp) and pAcsw19-3 (38,391bp), respectively. Resistome analysis showed that Acsw19 carried 12 antimicrobial resistance genes, including 6 [cmlB1-like, bla _NDM-1, bla _OXA-58, aph (3')-VIa, msr(E) and mph(E)] in the plasmid pAcsw19-2 and 6 (bla _OXA-211-like, bla _NDM-1, aph(3")-Ib, aph(6)-Id, sul2, and floR) in the chromosome genome. Specifically, the cmlB1-like gene shared 86.33%, 71.7% and 71.9% similarities with the cmlB1, cmlA4 and cmlA8 gene, and the bla _OXA-211-like gene shared 94.4%, 95.39% and 96.36% similarities with bla _OXA-211, bla _OXA-643 and bla _OXA-652, at the nucleotide level, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the bla _OXA-211-like gene and cmlB1-like gene had the closest evolutionary relationship with bla _OXA-643 and cmlB1, respectively. These results indicated that the bla _OXA-211-like and cmlB1-like genes identified in the current study should be the novel variant resistance genes.

Conclusion

Carrying of two copies of bla _NDM-1, cmlB1-like, bla _OXA-211-like and along with other 8 antimicrobial resistance genes, 3 plasmids, 15 genomic islands and 8 prophages Acinetobacter johnsonii strain might increase the possibility of spreading of resistance genes.

Abundance of mobile genetic elements in an Acinetobacter lwoffii strain isolated from Transylvanian honey sample

Based on phylogenetic analyses, strain M2a isolated from honey, an unexpected source of acinetobacters, was classified as Acinetobacter lwoffii. The genome of this strain is strikingly crowded with mobile genetic elements. It harbours more than 250 IS elements of 15 IS-families, several unit and compound transposons and 15 different plasmids. These IS elements, including 30 newly identified ones, could be classified into at least 53 IS species. Regarding the plasmids, 13 of the 15 belong to the Rep-3 superfamily and only one plasmid, belonging to the “Low-GC” family, possesses a seemingly complete conjugative system. The other plasmids, with one exception, have a mobilization region of common pattern, consisting of the divergent mobA/mobL-family and mobS-, mobC- or traD-like genes separated by an oriT-like sequence. Although two plasmids of M2a are almost identical to those of A. lwoffi strains isolated from gold mine or Pleistocene sediments, most of them have no close relatives. The presence of numerous plasmid-borne and chromosomal metal resistance determinants suggests that M2a previously has also evolved in a metal-polluted environment. The numerous, possibly transferable, plasmids and the outstanding number of transposable elements may reflect the high potential of M2a for rapid evolution.

Investigation of Dipicolinic Acid Isosteres for the Inhibition of Metallo-β-Lactamases

New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase-1 (NDM-1) poses an immediate threat to our most effective and widely prescribed drugs, the β-lactam-containing class of antibiotics. There are no clinically relevant inhibitors to combat NDM-1, despite significant efforts toward their development. Inhibitors that use a carboxylic acid motif for binding the Zn^II ions in the active site of NDM-1 make up a large portion of the >500 inhibitors reported to date. New and structurally diverse scaffolds for inhibitor development are needed urgently. Herein we report the isosteric replacement of one carboxylate group of dipicolinic acid (DPA) to obtain DPA isosteres with good inhibitory activity against NDM-1 (and related metallo-β-lactamases, IMP-1 and VIM-2). It was determined that the choice of carboxylate isostere influences both the potency of NDM-1 inhibition and the mechanism of action. Additionally, we show that an isostere with a metal-stripping mechanism can be re-engineered into an inhibitor that favors ternary complex formation. This work provides a roadmap for future isosteric replacement of routinely used metal binding motifs (i.e., carboxylic acids) for the generation of new entities in NDM-1 inhibitor design and development.

MITE Aba12 , a Novel Mobile Miniature Inverted-Repeat Transposable Element Identified in Acinetobacter baumannii ATCC 17978 and Its Prevalence across the Moraxellaceae Family

One of the most important weapons in the armory of Acinetobacter is its impressive genetic plasticity, facilitating rapid genetic mutations and rearrangements as well as integration of foreign determinants carried by mobile genetic elements. Of these, IS are considered one of the key forces shaping bacterial genomes and ultimately evolution. We report the identification of a novel nonautonomous IS-derived element present in multiple bacterial species from the Moraxellaceae family and its recent translocation into the hns locus in the A. baumannii ATCC 17978 genome. The latter finding adds new knowledge to only a limited number of documented examples of MITEs in the literature and underscores the plastic nature of the hns locus in A. baumannii. MITE_Aba12, and its predicted parent(s), may be a source of substantial adaptive evolution within environmental and clinically relevant bacterial pathogens and, thus, have broad implications for niche-specific adaptation.

Insertion sequences (IS) are fundamental mediators of genome plasticity with the potential to generate phenotypic variation with significant evolutionary outcomes. Here, a recently active miniature inverted-repeat transposon element (MITE) was identified in a derivative of Acinetobacter baumannii ATCC 17978 after being subjected to stress conditions. Transposition of the novel element led to the disruption of the hns gene, resulting in a characteristic hypermotile phenotype. DNA identity shared between the terminal inverted repeats of this MITE and coresident ISAba12 elements, together with the generation of 9-bp target site duplications, provides strong evidence that ISAba12 elements were responsible for mobilization of the MITE (designated MITE_Aba12) within this strain. A wider genome-level survey identified MITE_Aba12 in 30 additional Acinetobacter genomes at various frequencies and one Moraxella osloensis genome. Ninety MITE_Aba12 copies could be identified, of which 40% had target site duplications, indicating recent transposition events. Elements ranged between 111 and 114 bp; 90% were 113 bp in length. Using the MITE_Aba12 consensus sequence, putative outward-facing Escherichia coli σ70 promoter sequences in both orientations were identified. The identification of transcripts originating from the promoter in one direction supports the proposal that the element can influence neighboring host gene transcription. The location of MITE_Aba12 varied significantly between and within genomes, preferentially integrating into AT-rich regions. Additionally, a copy of MITE_Aba12 was identified in a novel 8.5-kb composite transposon, Tn6645, in the M. osloensis CCUG 350 chromosome. Overall, this study shows that MITE_Aba12 is the most abundant nonautonomous element currently found in Acinetobacter.

NDM Metallo-β-Lactamases and Their Bacterial Producers in Health Care Settings

New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase (NDM) is a metallo-β-lactamase able to hydrolyze almost all β-lactams. Twenty-four NDM variants have been identified in >60 species of 11 bacterial families, and several variants have enhanced carbapenemase activity. Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli are the predominant carriers of bla _NDM, with certain sequence types (STs) (for K. pneumoniae, ST11, ST14, ST15, or ST147; for E. coli, ST167, ST410, or ST617) being the most prevalent. NDM-positive strains have been identified worldwide, with the highest prevalence in the Indian subcontinent, the Middle East, and the Balkans. Most bla _NDM-carrying plasmids belong to limited replicon types (IncX3, IncFII, or IncC). Commonly used phenotypic tests cannot specifically identify NDM. Lateral flow immunoassays specifically detect NDM, and molecular approaches remain the reference methods for detecting bla _NDM Polymyxins combined with other agents remain the mainstream options of antimicrobial treatment. Compounds able to inhibit NDM have been found, but none have been approved for clinical use. Outbreaks caused by NDM-positive strains have been reported worldwide, attributable to sources such as contaminated devices. Evidence-based guidelines on prevention and control of carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacteria are available, although none are specific for NDM-positive strains. NDM will remain a severe challenge in health care settings, and more studies on appropriate countermeasures are required.

Coexistence of NDM-1-producing Escherichia coli and Citrobacter freundii in the same patient

OBJECTIVES

Although bla_NDM-1 has been widely detected in various Enterobacteriaceae clinical isolates, multiple bla_NDM-1 colonisations within the same patient remain rare. The aim of the study was to describe a patient with respiratory tract colonisation with NDM-1-producing Escherichia coli and Citrobacter freundii during hospitalisation in China.

METHODS

Two carbapenem-resistant isolates were analysed. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing, metallo-β-lactamase production, conjugation assay, plasmid analysis and molecular typing were performed.

RESULTS

The two clinical isolates carried the bla_NDM-1 gene and showed resistance to carbapenems. S1 nuclease pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (S1-PFGE) revealed that E. coli NB753 harboured a plasmid of ca. 80kb, and C. freundii NB865 harboured three plasmids (ca. 70, 80 and 135kb). Southern blot and Inc replicon typing further demonstrated that both isolates carried the bla_NDM-1 gene on a self-transferrable IncX3 plasmid. Moreover, the two NDM-producing plasmids were conjugative and the transconjugants showed increased resistance to carbapenems.

CONCLUSION

An NDM-1-encoding plasmid harboured by various clinical isolates in a single patient is worrying considering that this plasmid may be widespread in our hospital. Furthermore, the threat of carbapenemase-producing bacterial epidemics should be closely monitored. However, a limitation of this study was the extremely small sample size.
