A New Paradigm in Earth Environmental Monitoring with the CYGNSS Small Satellite Constellation

An adaptive fusion algorithm for coastal sea altimetry based on dual-frequency Beidou-R carrier phase

This article proposes an integer ambiguity determination method based on Beidou system-reflectometry (Beidou-R) observations of the carrier phase at the B1I and B3I frequencies. To enhance the accuracy of sea surface height (SSH) estimation, this study introduces a parallel filtering algorithm and an adaptive iterative fusion algorithm, enabling data fusion based on the variance at B1I and B3I frequencies. To validate and evaluate the proposed method, a coastal experiment was conducted at the Shenxian River. In this experiment, reflected signals from GEO and IGSO satellites were collected. Data analysis reveals that the method is effective, demonstrating that the root mean square error (RMSE) of SSH achieves 2.85 cm and 2.89 cm for PRN 04 and PRN 33, respectively. Furthermore, the impact of the elevation angle on measurement accuracy is analyzed. This study aims to propose a method to enhance coastal sea surface height estimation, offering potential advancements in sea surface altimetry.

Multi-Source Soil Moisture Data Fusion Based on Spherical Cap Harmonic Analysis and Helmert Variance Component Estimation in the Western U.S

Soil moisture (SM) is a vital climate variable in the interaction process between the Earth's atmosphere and land. However, global soil moisture products from various satellite missions and land surface models are affected by inherently discontinuous observations and coarse spatial resolution, which limits their application at fine spatial scales. To address this problem, this paper integrates three diverse types of datasets from in situ, satellites, and models through Spherical cap harmonic analysis (SCHA) and Helmert variance component estimation (HVCE) to produce 1 km of spatio-temporally continuous SM products with high accuracy. First, this paper eliminates the bias between different datasets and in situ sites and resamples the datasets before data fusion. Then, multi-source SM data fusion is performed based on the SCHA and HVCE methods. Finally, this paper evaluates the fused products from three aspects, including the performance of representative sites under different climate types, the overall performance of validation sites, and the comparison with other products. The results show that the fused products have better performance than other SM products. In the representative sites, the minimal correlation coefficient (R) of the fused products is above 0.85, and the largest root mean square error (RMSE) is below 0.040 m3 m-3. For all validation sites, the R and RMSE of the fused products are 0.889 and 0.036 m3 m-3, respectively, while the R for other products is below 0.75 and the RMSE is above 0.06 m3 m-3. In comparison to other SM products, the fused products exhibit superior performance, generally align more closely with in situ measurements, and possess the ability to accurately and finely capture the spatial and temporal variability of surface SM.

An Illustration of FY-3E GNOS-R for Global Soil Moisture Monitoring

An effective soil moisture retrieval method for FY-3E (Fengyun-3E) GNOS-R (GNSS occultation sounder II-reflectometry) is developed in this paper. Here, the LAGRS model, which is totally oriented for GNOS-R, is employed to estimate vegetation and surface roughness effects on surface reflectivity. Since the LAGRS (land surface GNSS reflection simulator) model is a space-borne GNSS-R (GNSS reflectometry) simulator based on the microwave radiative transfer equation model, the method presented in this paper takes more consideration on the physical scattering properties for retrieval. Ancillary information from SMAP (soil moisture active passive) such as the vegetation water content and the roughness coefficient are investigated for the final algorithm's development. At first, the SR (surface reflectivity) data calculated from GNOS-R is calculated and then calibrated, and then the vegetation roughness factor is achieved and used to eliminate the effects on both factors. After receiving the Fresnel reflectivity, the corresponding soil moisture estimated from this method is retrieved. The results demonstrate good consistency between soil moisture derived from GNOS-R data and SMAP soil moisture, with a correlation coefficient of 0.9599 and a root mean square error of 0.0483 cm³/cm³. This method succeeds in providing soil moisture on a global scale and is based on the previously developed physical LAGRS model. In this way, the great potential of GNOS-R for soil moisture estimation is presented.

Retrieval and Assessment of Significant Wave Height from CYGNSS Mission Using Neural Network

In this study, we investigate sea state estimation from spaceborne GNSS-R. Due to the complex scattering of electromagnetic waves on the rough sea surface, the neural network approach is adopted to develop an algorithm to derive significant wave height (SWH) from CYGNSS data. Eighty-nine million pieces of CYGNSS data from September to November 2020 and the co-located ECMWF data are employed to train a three-hidden-layer neural network. Ten variables are considered as the input parameters of the neural network. Without the auxiliary of the wind speed, the SWH retrieved using the trained neural network exhibits a bias and an RMSE of −0.13 and 0.59 m with respect to ECMWF data. When considering wind speed as the input, the bias and RMSE were reduced to −0.09 and 0.49 m, respectively. When the incidence angle ranges from 35∘ to 65∘ and the SNR is above 7 dB, the retrieval performance is better than that obtained using other values. The measurements derived from the “Block III” satellite offer worse results than those derived from other satellites. When the distance is considered as an input parameter, the retrieval performances for the areas near the coast are significantly improved. A soft data filter is used to synchronously improve the precision and ensure the desired sample number. The RMSEs of the retrieved SWH are reduced to 0.45 m and 0.41 m from 0.59 m and 0.49 m, and only 16.0% and 14.9% of the samples are removed. The retrieved SWH also shows a clear agreement with the co-located buoy and Jason-3 altimeter data.

Calibration and Validation of CYGNSS Reflectivity through Wetlands’ and Deserts’ Dielectric Permittivity

The reflection of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) signals, namely GNSS-Reflectometry (GNSS-R), has recently proven to be able to monitor land surface properties in the microwave spectrum, at a global scale, and with very low revisiting time. Moreover, this new technique has numerous additional advantages, including low cost, low power consumption, lightweight and small payloads, and near real-time massive data availability, as compared to conventional monostatic microwave remote sensing. However, the GNSS-R surface reflectivity values estimated through the bistatic radar equation, and the Fresnel coefficients have shown a lack of coincidence with real surface reflectivity data, mostly due to calibration issues. Previous studies have attempted to avoid this matter with direct regression methods between uncalibrated GNSS-R reflectivity data and external soil moisture content (SMC) products. However, calibration of GNSS-R reflectivity used in traditional inversion models is still a challenge, such as those to estimate SMC, freeze/thaw, or biomass. In this paper, a successful procedure for GNSS-R reflectivity calibration is established using data from the CYGNSS (Cyclone GNSS) constellation. The scale and bias parameters are estimated from the theoretical dielectric properties of water and dry sand, which are well-known and empirically validated values. We employ four calibration areas that provide maximum range limits of reflectivity, such as deserts and wetlands. The CYGNSS scale factor and the bias parameter resulted in a = 3.77 and b = 0.018, respectively. The derived scale and bias parameters are applied to the CYGNSS dataset, and the retrieved SMC values through the Fresnel reflection coefficients are in excellent agreement with the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) SMC product. Then, the SMAP SMC is used as a reference true value, and provides a standard linear regression with an R-square coefficient of 0.803, a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.084, and a Pearson’s correlation coefficient of 0.896.

An Observing System Simulation Experiment (OSSE) to Study the Impact of Ocean Surface Observation from the Micro Unmanned Robot Observation Network (MURON) on Tropical Cyclone Forecast

The Micro Unmanned Robot Observation Network (MURON) is a planned in-situ observation network over the surface of West Pacific Ocean, and it is designed to sample high spatial and temporal resolution observations of wind and mass fields over the ocean surface. The impacts of MURON observations for Tropical Cyclone (TC) intensity forecast are investigated using Observation System Simulation Experiments. The regional Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) system of Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation is used with the Advanced Research version of the Weather Research and Forecasting model to conduct OSSEs for typhoon Haiyan (2013) while Haiyan goes through rapid intensification. Assimilating MURON observations improves the TC structure and intensity analysis and forecast. The intensity forecast is improved largely due to the correction of initial vorticity and vertical transport of mass flux. The improvement of intensity forecast is attributed largely to the assimilated MURON wind observations when Haiyan is at the tropical disturbance stage, and then by the MURON mass observations when Haiyan enters the tropical storm stage. In addition, our results show that the quality of moisture analysis is sensitive to the choice of the moisture control variable (CV) in the EnKF system. Using the default pseudo relative humidity (PRH) as the moisture CV degrades the accuracy of the moisture analysis. This is likely due to the neglect of updated temperature field during the nonlinear conversion from the PRH CV to the mixing ratio variable and due to the larger deviation of the PRH from Gaussian distribution. The use of mixing ratio moisture CV mitigates these problems.

A New Orbiting Deployable System for Small Satellite Observations for Ecology and Earth Observation

In this paper, we present several study cases focused on marine, oceanographic, and atmospheric environments, which would greatly benefit from the use of a deployable system for small satellite observations. As opposed to the large standard ones, small satellites have become an effective and affordable alternative access to space, owing to their lower costs, innovative design and technology, and higher revisiting times, when launched in a constellation configuration. One of the biggest challenges is created by the small satellite instrumentation working in the visible (VIS), infrared (IR), and microwave (MW) spectral ranges, for which the resolution of the acquired data depends on the physical dimension of the telescope and the antenna collecting the signal. In this respect, a deployable payload, fitting the limited size and mass imposed by the small satellite architecture, once unfolded in space, can reach performances similar to those of larger satellites. In this study, we show how ecology and Earth Observations can benefit from data acquired by small satellites, and how they can be further improved thanks to deployable payloads. We focus on DORA—Deployable Optics for Remote sensing Applications—in the VIS to TIR spectral range, and on a planned application in the MW spectral range, and we carry out a radiometric analysis to verify its performances for Earth Observation studies.

Exploration of Multi-Mission Spaceborne GNSS-R Raw IF Data Sets: Processing, Data Products and Potential Applications

Earth reflected Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals can be received by dedicated orbital receivers for remote sensing and Earth observation (EO) purposes. Different spaceborne missions have been launched during the past years, most of which can only provide the delay-Doppler map (DDM) of the power of the reflected GNSS signals as their main data products. In addition to the power DDM products, some of these missions have collected a large amount of raw intermediate frequency (IF) data, which are the bit streams of raw signal samples recorded after the analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) and prior to any onboard digital processing. The unprocessed nature of these raw IF data provides an unique opportunity to explore the potential of GNSS Reflectometry (GNSS-R) technique for advanced geophysical applications and future spaceborne missions. To facilitate such explorations, the raw IF data sets from different missions have been processed by Institute of Space Sciences (ICE-CSIC, IEEC), and the corresponding data products, i.e., the complex waveform of the reflected signal, have been generated and released through our public open-data server. These complex waveform data products provide the measurements from different GNSS constellations (e.g., GPS, Galileo and BeiDou), and include both the amplitude and carrier phase information of the reflected GNSS signal at higher sampling rate (e.g., 1000 Hz). To demonstrate these advanced features of the data products, different applications, e.g., inland water detection and surface altimetry, are introduced in this paper. By making these complex waveform data products publicly available, new EO capability of the GNSS-R technique can be further explored by the community. Such early explorations are also relevant to ESA’s next GNSS-R mission, HydroGNSS, which will provide similar complex observations operationally and continuously in the future.

FY3E GNOS II GNSS Reflectometry: Mission Review and First Results

FengYun-3E (FY3E), launched on 5 July 2021, is one of China’s polar-orbiting meteorological satellite series. The GNOS II onboard FY3E is an operational GNSS remote sensor that for the first time combines GNSS radio occultation (GNSS RO) and GNSS reflectometry (GNSS-R). It has eight reflection channels that can track eight specular points at the same time, receiving reflected signals from multiple GNSS systems, including GPS, BeiDou and Galileo. The basic GNSS-R output generated by GNOS II is a 122 × 20 non-uniform delay-Doppler map whose high resolution portion captures more information near the specular point. This paper introduces the GNSS-R aspect of the FengYun-3E GNOS II, including the instrument, power calibration and wind speed retrieval algorithm. Preliminary validation results for its first four months of data are also presented. After preliminary quality control, the overall wind speed error is less than 2 m/s at wind speeds below 20 m/s for data from both GPS satellites and BeiDou satellites when compared to the ECMWF reanalysis winds.

Assessment of CYGNSS Wind Speed Retrievals in Tropical Cyclones

The NASA CYGNSS satellite constellation measures ocean surface winds using the existing network of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and was designed for measurements in tropical cyclones (TCs). Here, we focus on using a consistent methodology to validate multiple CYGNSS wind data records currently available to the public, some focusing on low to moderate wind speeds, others for high winds, a storm-centric product for TC analyses, and a wind dataset from NOAA that applies a track-wise bias correction. Our goal is to document their differences and provide guidance to users. The assessment of CYGNSS winds (2017–2020) is performed here at global scales and for all wind regimes, with particular focus on TCs, using measurements from radiometers that are specifically developed for high winds: SMAP, WindSat, and AMSR2 TC-winds. The CYGNSS high-wind products display significant biases in TCs and very large uncertainties. Similar biases and large uncertainties were found with the storm-centric wind product. On the other hand, the NOAA winds show promising skill in TCs, approaching a level suitable for tropical meteorology studies. At the global level, the NOAA winds are overall unbiased at wind regimes from 0–30 m/s and were selected for a test assimilation into a global wind analysis, CCMP, also presented here.

Detecting forest response to droughts with global observations of vegetation water content

Droughts in a warming climate have become more common and more extreme, making understanding forest responses to water stress increasingly pressing. Analysis of water stress in trees has long focused on water potential in xylem and leaves, which influences stomatal closure and water flow through the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum. At the same time, changes of vegetation water content (VWC) are linked to a range of tree responses, including fluxes of water and carbon, mortality, flammability, and more. Unlike water potential, which requires demanding in situ measurements, VWC can be retrieved from remote sensing measurements, particularly at microwave frequencies using radar and radiometry. Here, we highlight key frontiers through which VWC has the potential to significantly increase our understanding of forest responses to water stress. To validate remote sensing observations of VWC at landscape scale and to better relate them to data assimilation model parameters, we introduce an ecosystem-scale analog of the pressure-volume curve, the non-linear relationship between average leaf or branch water potential and water content commonly used in plant hydraulics. The sources of variability in these ecosystem-scale pressure-volume curves and their relationship to forest response to water stress are discussed. We further show to what extent diel, seasonal, and decadal dynamics of VWC reflect variations in different processes relating the tree response to water stress. VWC can also be used for inferring belowground conditions-which are difficult to impossible to observe directly. Lastly, we discuss how a dedicated geostationary spaceborne observational system for VWC, when combined with existing datasets, can capture diel and seasonal water dynamics to advance the science and applications of global forest vulnerability to future droughts.

Basin-wide flood depth and exposure mapping from SAR images and machine learning models

Recent years recorded an increasing number of short duration - high-intensity rainfall events in the Indian subcontinent consequent with urban and riverine flash floods. Rapid assessments of flooded areas are key for effective mitigation strategies and disaster risk plans, as well as to prepare operative policies for future events. Herein, we present an integrated methodology for rapidly mapping the flood extent, and depths based on Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images and a digital elevation model (DEM). Incessant rain during August 2019 brought heavy riverine flooding in southern India, killed at least 280 people, and displaced about one million inhabitants from low-lying areas. We used SAR images by Sentinel-1 before, and during the flooding, and the MERIT DEM which enabled us to map the flood extent and flood depth of the inundation zones. Because the coverage of Sentinel-1 scene was limited to the Kabini river section during the flood period, flood extent and depth maps for the adjacent basin was generated by mapping the susceptibility for flooding using the training set obtained from the flood time Sentinel-1 images, and a set of predictive variables derived from DEM using random forest model. Qualitative analysis and cross-comparison with a numerical flood model proved the proposed approach is highly reliable with an accuracy value of 90% and 86% respectively for training and validation data, thus allowing a precise, simple, and fast flood mapping. The methodology presented here could be applied to other flooded areas having incomplete inventory in the context of flood risk assessment.

High Spatial-Temporal Resolution Estimation of Ground-Based Global Navigation Satellite System Interferometric Reflectometry (GNSS-IR) Soil Moisture Using the Genetic Algorithm Back Propagation (GA-BP) Neural Network

Soil moisture is one of the critical variables in maintaining the global water cycle balance. Moreover, it plays a vital role in climate change, crop growth, and environmental disaster event monitoring, and it is important to monitor soil moisture continuously. Recently, Global Navigation Satellite System interferometric reflectometry (GNSS-IR) technology has become essential for monitoring soil moisture. However, the sparse distribution of GNSS-IR soil moisture sites has hindered the application of soil moisture products. In this paper, we propose a multi-data fusion soil moisture inversion algorithm based on machine learning. The method uses the Genetic Algorithm Back-Propagation (GA-BP) neural network model, by combining GNSS-IR site data with other surface environmental parameters around the site. In turn, soil moisture is obtained by inversion, and we finally obtain a soil moisture product with a high spatial and temporal resolution of 500 m per day. The multi-surface environmental data include latitude and longitude information, rainfall, air temperature, land cover type, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and four topographic factors (elevation, slope, slope direction, and shading). To maximize the spatial and temporal resolution of the GNSS-IR technique within a machine learning framework, we obtained satisfactory results with a cross-validated R-value of 0.8660 and an ubRMSE of 0.0354. This indicates that the machine learning approach learns the complex nonlinear relationships between soil moisture and the input multi-surface environmental data. The soil moisture products were analyzed compared to the contemporaneous rainfall and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)’s soil moisture products. The results show that the spatial distribution of the GA-BP inversion soil moisture products is more consistent with rainfall and NASA products, which verifies the feasibility of using this experimental model to generate 500 m per day the GA-BP inversion soil moisture products.

An Assessment of CyGNSS v3.0 Level 1 Observables over the Ocean

Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry (GNSS-R) is a rapidly developing Earth observation technology that makes use of signals of opportunity from Global Navigation Satellite Systems that have been reflected off the Earth’s surface. The Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CyGNSS) is a constellation of eight small satellites launched by NASA in 2016, carrying dedicated GNSS-R payloads to measure ocean surface wind speed at low latitudes (±35° North/South). The ESA ECOLOGY project evaluated CyGNSS v3.0 products, which were recently released following various calibration updates. This paper examines the performance of the new calibration by evaluating CyGNSS v3.0 Level-1 Normalised Bistatic Radar Cross Section (NBRCS) and Leading Edge Slope (LES) data from individual CyGNSS units and different GPS transmitters under constant ocean wind conditions. Results indicate that L1 NBRCS from individual CyGNSS units are well inter-calibrated and remarkably stable over time, a significant improvement over previous versions of the products. However, prominent geographical biases reaching over 3 dB are found in NBRCS, linked to factors including the choice of GPS transmitter and the bistatic geometry. L1 LES shows similar anomalies as well as a secondary geographical pattern of biases. These findings provide a basis for further improvement of CyGNSS Level-2 wind products and have wider applicability to improving the calibration of GNSS-R sensors for the remote sensing of non-ocean Earth surfaces.

The CYGNSS Mission: On-Going Science Team Investigations

In 2012, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) selected the CYclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) mission coordinated by the University of Michigan (UM) as a low-cost and high-science Earth Venture Mission. The CYGNSS mission was originally proposed for ocean surface wind speed estimation over Tropical Cyclones (TCs) using Earth-reflected Global Positioning System (GPS) signals, as signals of opportunity. The orbital configuration of each CYGNSS satellite is a circular Low Earth Orbit (LEO) with an altitude ~520 km and an inclination angle of ~35°. Each single Delay Doppler Mapping Instrument (DDMI) aboard the eight CYGNSS microsatellites collects forward scattered signals along four specular directions (incidence angle of the incident wave equals incidence angle of the reflected wave) corresponding to four different transmitting GPS spacecrafts, simultaneously. As such, CYGNSS allows one to sample the Earth’s surface along 32 tracks simultaneously, within a wide range of the satellites’ elevation angles over tropical latitudes. Following the Earth Science Division 2020 Senior Review, NASA announced recently it is extending the CYGNSS mission through 30 September 2023. The extended CYGNSS mission phase is focused on both ocean and land surface scientific investigations. In addition to ocean surface wind speed estimation, CYGNSS has also shown a significant ability to retrieve several geophysical parameters over land surfaces, such as Soil Moisture Content (SMC), Above Ground Biomass (AGB), and surface water extent. The on-going science team investigations are presented in this article.

Evaluation of the Land GNSS-Reflected DDM Coherence on Soil Moisture Estimation from CYGNSS Data

With the development of spaceborne global navigation satellite system-reflectometry (GNSS-R), it can be used for terrestrial applications as a promising remote sensing tool, such as soil moisture (SM) retrieval. The reflected L-band GNSS signal from the land surface can simultaneously generate coherent and incoherent scattering, depending on surface roughness. However, the contribution of the incoherent component was directly ignored in previous GNSS-R land soil moisture content retrieval due to the hypothesis of its relatively small proportion. In this paper, a detection method is proposed to distinguish the coherence of land GNSS-R delay-Doppler map (DDM) from the cyclone global navigation satellite system (CYGNSS) mission in terms of DDM power-spreading features, which are characterized by different classification estimators. The results show that the trailing edge slope of normalized integrated time-delay waveform presents a better performance to recognize coherent and incoherent dominated observations, indicating that 89.6% of CYGNSS land observations are dominated by the coherent component. Furthermore, the impact of the land GNSS-Reflected DDM coherence on soil moisture retrieval is evaluated from 19-month CYGNSS data. The experiment results show that the influence of incoherent component and incoherent observations is marginal for CYGNSS soil moisture retrieval, and the RMSE of GNSS-R derived soil moisture reaches 0.04 cm3/cm3.

Comparing Winds near Tropical Oceanic Precipitation Systems with and without Lightning

In order to examine how robust updraft strength and ice-based microphysical processes aloft in storms may affect convective outflows near the surface, ocean winds were compared between tropical maritime precipitation systems with and without lightning. The analysis focused on Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) specular point tracks, using straightforward spatiotemporal matching criteria to pair CYGNSS-measured wind speeds with satellite-based precipitation observations, Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT) wind speeds, and lightning flash data from ground-based and space-based sensors. Based on the results, thunderstorms over the tropical oceans are associated with significantly heavier rain rates (~200% greater) than non-thunderstorms. However, wind speeds near either type of precipitation system do not differ much (~0.5 m s−1 or less). Moreover, the sign of the difference depends on the wind instrument used, with CYGNSS suggesting non-thunderstorm winds are slightly stronger, while ASCAT suggests the opposite. These observed wind differences are likely related to lingering uncertainties between CYGNSS and ASCAT measurements in precipitation. However, both CYGNSS and ASCAT observe winds near precipitation (whether lightning-producing or not) to be stronger than background winds by at least 1 m s−1.

Analytical Computation of the Spatial Resolution in GNSS-R and Experimental Validation at L1 and L5

Global navigation satellite systems reflectometry (GNSS-R) is a relatively novel remote sensing technique, but it can be understood as a multi-static radar using satellite navigation signals as signals of opportunity. The scattered signals over sea ice, flooded areas, and even under dense vegetation show a detectable coherent component that can be separated from the incoherent component and processed accordingly. This work derives an analytical formulation of the response of a GNSS-R instrument to a step function in the reflectivity using well-known principles of electromagnetic theory. The evaluation of the spatial resolution then requires a numerical evaluation of the proposed equations, as the width of the transition depends on the reflectivity values of two regions. However, it is found that results are fairly constant over a wide range of reflectivities, and they only vary faster for very high or very low reflectivity gradients. The predicted step response is then satisfactorily compared to airborne experimental results at L1 (1575.42 MHz) and L5 (1176.45 MHz) bands, acquired over a water reservoir south of Melbourne, in terms of width and ringing, and several examples are provided when the transition occurs from land to a rough ocean surface, where the coherent scattering component is no longer dominant.

Machine Learning-Aided Sea Ice Monitoring Using Feature Sequences Extracted from Spaceborne GNSS-Reflectometry Data

Two effective machine learning-aided sea ice monitoring methods are investigated using 42 months of spaceborne Global Navigation Satellite System-Reflectometry (GNSS-R) data collected by the TechDemoSat-1 (TDS-1). The two-dimensional delay waveforms with different Doppler spread characteristics are applied to extract six features, which are combined to monitor sea ice using the decision tree (DT) and random forest (RF) algorithms. Firstly, the feature sequences are used as input variables and sea ice concentration (SIC) data from the Advanced Microwave Space Radiometer-2 (AMSR-2) are applied as targeted output to train the sea ice monitoring model. Hereafter, the performance of the proposed method is evaluated through comparing with the sea ice edge (SIE) data from the Special Sensor Microwave Imager Sounder (SSMIS) data. The DT- and RF-based methods achieve an overall accuracy of 97.51% and 98.03%, respectively, in the Arctic region and 95.46% and 95.96%, respectively, in the Antarctic region. The DT- and RF-based methods achieve similar accuracies, while the Kappa coefficient of RF-based approach is slightly larger than that of the DT-based approach, which indicates that the RF-based method outperforms the DT-based method. The results show the potential of monitoring sea ice using machine learning-aided GNSS-R approaches.

Evaluations of Machine Learning-Based CYGNSS Soil Moisture Estimates against SMAP Observations

This paper presents a machine learning (ML) framework to derive a quasi-global soil moisture (SM) product by direct use of the Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS)’s high spatio-temporal resolution observations over the tropics (within ±38° latitudes) at L-band. The learning model is trained by using in-situ SM data from the International Soil Moisture Network (ISMN) sites and various space-borne ancillary data. The approach produces daily SM retrievals that are gridded to 3 km and 9 km within the CYGNSS spatial coverage. The performance of the model is independently evaluated at various temporal scales (daily, 3-day, weekly, and monthly) against Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission’s enhanced SM products at a resolution of 9 km × 9 km. The mean unbiased root-mean-square difference (ubRMSD) between concurrent (same calendar day) CYGNSS and SMAP SM retrievals for about three years (from 2017 to 2019) is 0.044 cm3 cm−3 with a correlation coefficient of 0.66 over SMAP recommended grids. The performance gradually improves with temporal averaging and degrades over regions regularly flagged by SMAP such as dense forest, high topography, and coastlines. Furthermore, CYGNSS and SMAP retrievals are evaluated against 170 ISMN in-situ observations that result in mean unbiased root-mean-square errors (ubRMSE) of 0.055 cm3 cm−3 and 0.054 cm3 cm−3, respectively, and a higher correlation coefficient with CYGNSS retrievals. It is important to note that the proposed approach is trained over limited in-situ observations and is independent of SMAP observations in its training. The retrieval performance indicates current applicability and future growth potential of GNSS-R-based, directly measured spaceborne SM products that can provide improved spatio-temporal resolution than currently available datasets.

Joint Use of Spaceborne Microwave Sensor Data and CYGNSS Data to Observe Tropical Cyclones

The joint use of spaceborne microwave sensor data and Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) data to observe tropical cyclones (TCs) is presented in this paper. The Soil Moisture Active and Passive (SMAP) radiometer was taken as an example of a spaceborne microwave sensor, and its data and the CYGNSS data were fused to fix the center of a TC and to measure the maximum wind speed around the TC inner core. This process included data preprocessing, image fusion, determination of the TC center position, and the estimation of the TC’s intensity. For all of the observed hurricanes, the experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method obtains a more complete structure of the TC and can measure the surface wind speed around the TC inner core at more frequent intervals compared to the case where the SMAP radiometer data or the CYGNSS data are employed alone. Furthermore, when comparing the TC tracks obtained by the proposed method with the best tracks provided by the National Hurricane Center (NHC), we found that the mean absolute error values ranged between 18.4 and 46 km, the standard deviation varied between 15.1 and 28.2 km, and both of these were smaller than the values obtained by only using the CYGNSS data. In addition, when comparing the maximum wind speed around the TC inner core obtained by the proposed method with the best track peak winds estimated by the NHC, we found that the mean absolute error values ranged between 7.7 and 15.7 m/s, the root-mean-square difference values varied between 8.6 and 18 m/s, the correlation coefficients varied between 0.1782 and 0.9877, the bias values varied between −8.5 and 4.5 m/s, and all of these values were smaller in most cases, than those obtained by only using the CYGNSS data.

Flood Inundation Mapping by Combining GNSS-R Signals with Topographical Information

The Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) mission collects near-global hourly, pseudo-randomly distributed Global Navigation Satellite System - Reflectometry (GNSS-R) signals in the form of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) point data, which is sensitive to the presence of surface water, due to their operating frequency at L-band. However, because of the pseudo-random nature of these points, it is not possible to obtain continuous flood inundation maps at adequately high resolution. By considering topological indicators, such as height above nearest drainage (HAND) and slope of nearest drainage (SND), which indicate the probability of a certain area being prone to flooding, we hypothesize that combining static topographic information with the dynamic GNSS-R signals can result in large-scale, high-resolution flood inundation maps. Flood mapping was performed and validated with flood extent derived using available Sentinel-1A synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data for flooding in Kerala during August 2018, and North India during August 2017. The results obtained after thresholding indicate that the model exhibits a flooding accuracy ranging from 60% to 80% for lower threshold values. We observed significant overestimation error in mapping inundation across the flooding period, resulting in an optimal critical success index of 0.22 for threshold values between 17–19.

Neural Network Based Quality Control of CYGNSS Wind Retrieval

Global Navigation Satellite System – Reflectometry (GNSS-R) is a relatively new field in remote sensing that uses reflected GPS signals from the Earth’s surface to study the state of the surface geophysical parameters under observation. The CYGNSS is a first of its kind GNSS-R constellation mission launched in December 2016. It aims at providing high quality global scale GNSS-R measurements that can reliably be used for ocean science applications such as the study of ocean wind speed dynamics, tropical cyclone genesis, coupled ocean wave modelling, and assimilation into Numerical Weather Prediction models. To achieve this goal, strong quality control filters are needed to detect and remove outlier measurements. Currently, quality control of CYGNSS data products are based on fixed thresholds on various engineering, instrument, and measurement conditions. In this work we develop a Neural Network based quality control filter for automated outlier detection of CYGNSS retrieved winds. The primary merit of the proposed ML filter is its ability to better account for interactions between the individual engineering, instrument and measurement conditions than can separate thresholded flags for each one. Use of Machine Learning capabilities to capture inherent patterns in the data can create an efficient and effective mechanism to detect and remove outlier measurements. The resulting filter has a probability of outlier detection (PD) >75% and False Alarm Rate (FAR) < 20% for a wind speed range of 5 to 18 m/s. At least 75% of the outliers with wind speed errors of at least 5 m/s are removed while ~100% of the outliers with wind speed errors of at least 10 m/s are removed. This filter significantly improves data quality. The standard deviation of wind speed retrieval error is reduced from 2.6 m/s without the filter to 1.7 m/s with it over a wind speed range of 0 to 25 m/s. The design space for this filter is also analyzed in this work to characterize trade-offs between PD and FAR. Currently the filter performance is applicable only up to moderate wind speeds, as sufficient data is available only in this range to train the filter, as a way forward, more data over time can help expand the usability of this filter to higher wind speed ranges as well.

Evaluation of CYGNSS Observations for Flood Detection and Mapping during Sistan and Baluchestan Torrential Rain in 2020

Flood detection and produced maps play essential roles in policymaking, planning, and implementing flood management options. Remote sensing is commonly accepted as a maximum cost-effective technology to obtain detailed information over large areas of lands and oceans. We used remote sensing observations from Global Navigation Satellite System-Reflectometry (GNSS-R) to study the potential of this technique for the retrieval of flood maps over the regions affected by the recent flood in the southeastern part of Iran. The evaluation was made using spaceborne GNSS-R measurements over the Sistan and Baluchestan provinces during torrential rain in January 2020. This area has been at a high risk of flood in recent years and needs to be continuously monitored by means of timely observations. The main dataset was acquired from the level-1 data product of the Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) spaceborne mission. The mission consisted of a constellation of eight microsatellites with GNSS-R sensors onboard to receive forward-scattered GNSS signals from the ocean and land. We first focused on data preparation and eliminating the outliers. Afterward, the reflectivity of the surface was calculated using the bistatic radar equations formula. The flooded areas were then detected based on the analysis of the derived reflectivity. Images from Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) were used for evaluation of the results. The analysis estimated the inundated area of approximately 19,644 km2 (including Jaz-Murian depression) to be affected by the flood in the south and middle parts of the Sistan and Baluchestan province. Although the main mission of CYGNSS was to measure the ocean wind speed in hurricanes and tropical cyclones, we showed the capability of detecting floods in the study area. The sensitivity of the spaceborne GNSS-R observations, together with the relatively short revisit time, highlight the potential of this technique to be used in flood detection. Future GNSS-R missions capable of collecting the reflected signals from all available multi-GNSS constellations would offer even more detailed information from the flood-affected areas.

First Evidence of Mesoscale Ocean Eddies Signature in GNSS Reflectometry Measurements

Feasibility of sensing mesoscale ocean eddies using spaceborne Global Navigation Satellite Systems-Reflectometry (GNSS-R) measurements is demonstrated for the first time. Measurements of Cyclone GNSS (CYGNSS) satellite missions over the eddies, documented in the Aviso eddy trajectory atlas, are studied. The investigation reports on the evidence of normalized bistatic radar cross section ( σ 0 ) responses over the center or the edges of the eddies. A statistical analysis using profiles over eddies in 2017 is carried out. The potential contributing factors leaving the signature in the measurements are discussed. The analysis of GNSS-R observations collocated with ancillary data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Reanalysis-5 (ERA-5) shows strong inverse correlations of σ 0 with the sensible heat flux and surface stress in certain conditions.

Soil Moisture Content from GNSS Reflectometry Using Dielectric Permittivity from Fresnel Reflection Coefficients

Global Navigation Satellite Systems-Reflectometry (GNSS-R) has shown unprecedented advantages to sense Soil Moisture Content (SMC) with high spatial and temporal coverage, low cost, and under all-weather conditions. However, implementing an appropriated physical basis to estimate SMC from GNSS-R is still a challenge, while previous solutions were only based on direct comparisons, statistical regressions, or time-series analyses between GNSS-R observables and external SMC products. In this paper, we attempt to retrieve SMC from GNSS-R by estimating the dielectric permittivity from Fresnel reflection coefficients. We employ Cyclone GNSS (CYGNSS) data and effectively account for the effects of bare soil roughness (BSR) and vegetation optical depth by employing ICESat-2 (Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellites 2) and/or SMAP (Soil Moisture Active Passive) products. The tests carried out with ICESat-2 BSR data have shown the high sensitivity in SMC retrieval to high BSR values, due to the high sensitivity of ICESat-2 to land surface microrelief. Our GNSS-R SMC estimates are validated by SMAP SMC products and the results provide an R-square of 0.6, Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) of 0.05, and a zero p-value, for the 4568 test points evaluated at the eastern region of China during April 2019. The achieved results demonstrate the optimal capability and potential of this new method for converting reflectivity measurements from GNSS-R into Land Surface SMC estimates.

Response to Variations in River Flowrate by a Spaceborne GNSS-R River Width Estimator

In recent years, the use of Global Navigation Satellite System-Reflectometry (GNSS-R) for remote sensing of the Earth’s surface has gained momentum as a means to exploit existing spaceborne microwave navigation systems for science-related applications. Here, we explore the potential for using measurements made by a spaceborne GNSS-R bistatic radar system (CYGNSS) during river overpasses to estimate its width, and to use that width as a proxy for river flowrate. We present a case study utilizing CYGNSS data collected in the spring of 2019 during multiple overpasses of the Pascagoula River in southern Mississippi over a range of flowrates. Our results demonstrate that a measure of river width derived from CYGNSS is highly correlated with the observed flowrates. We show that an approximately monotonic relationship exists between river flowrate and a measure of river width which we define as the associated GNSS-R width (AGW). These results suggest the potential for GNSS-R systems to be utilized as a means to estimate river flowrates and widths from space.

High Spatio-Temporal Resolution CYGNSS Soil Moisture Estimates Using Artificial Neural Networks

This paper presents a learning-based, physics-aware soil moisture (SM) retrieval algorithm for NASA’s Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) mission. The goal of the proposed novel method is to advance CYGNSS-based SM estimations, exploiting the spatio-temporal resolution of the GNSS reflectometry (GNSS-R) signals to its highest potential within a machine learning framework. The methodology employs a fully connected Artificial Neural Network (ANN) regression model to perform SM predictions through learning the nonlinear relations of SM and other land geophysical parameters to the CYGNSS observables. In situ SM measurements from several International SM Network (ISMN) sites are used as reference labels; CYGNSS incidence angles, derived reflectivity and trailing edge slope (TES) values, as well as ancillary data, are exploited as input features for training and validation of the ANN model. In particular, the utilized ancillary data consist of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), vegetation water content (VWC), terrain elevation, terrain slope, and h-parameter (surface roughness). Land cover classification and inland water body masks are also used for the intermediate derivations and quality control purposes. The proposed algorithm assumes uniform SM over a 0.0833 ∘ × 0.0833 ∘ (approximately 9 km × 9 km around the equator) lat/lon grid for any CYGNSS observation that falls within this window. The proposed technique is capable of generating sub-daily and high-resolution SM predictions as it does not rely on time-series or spatial averaging of the CYGNSS observations. Once trained on the data from ISMN sites, the model is independent from other SM sources for retrieval. The estimation results obtained over unseen test data are promising: SM predictions with an unbiased root mean squared error of 0.0544 cm 3 /cm 3 and Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.9009 are reported for 2017 and 2018.

Using CYGNSS Data to Monitor China’s Flood Inundation during Typhoon and Extreme Precipitation Events in 2017

NASA’s Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) mission, launched in 2016, is a small satellite constellation designed to measure the ocean surface wind speed in hurricanes and tropical cyclones. To explore its additional capabilities for applications on the land surface, this study investigated the advantages and limitations of using CYGNSS data to monitor flood inundation during typhoon and extreme precipitation events in southeast China in 2017. The results showed that despite the lack of quantitative evaluation, the CYGNSS-derived surface reflectivity (SR) and flood inundation area was qualitatively consistent with the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM)-derived precipitation and Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP)/Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS)-derived total brightness temperature at circular polarization ( T b C ). The results provide supporting evidence for further designation of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) reflectometry (GNSS-R) constellations to monitor land surface hydrology.

Satellites See the World’s Atmosphere

Satellite meteorology is a relatively new branch of the atmospheric sciences. The field emerged in the late 1950s during the Cold War and built on the advances in rocketry after World War II. In less than 70 years, satellite observations have transformed the way scientists observe and study Earth. This paper discusses some of the key advances in our understanding of the energy and water cycles, weather forecasting, and atmospheric composition enabled by satellite observations. While progress truly has been an international achievement, in accord with a monograph observing the centennial of the American Meteorological Society, as well as limited space, the emphasis of this chapter is on the U.S. satellite effort.
