Allabogdanite, the high-pressure polymorph of (Fe,Ni)2P, a stishovite-grade indicator of impact processes in the Fe-Ni-P system

Iron Phosphate Nanozyme-Hydrogel with Multienzyme-like Activity for Efficient Bacterial Sterilization

Pathogenic bacteria infections have posed a threat to human health worldwide. Nanomaterials with natural enzymatic activity provide an opportunity for the development of new antibacterial pathways. We successfully constructed iron phosphate nanozyme-hydrogel (FePO₄-HG) with the traits of positive charge and macropores. Interestingly, FePO₄-HG displayed not only peroxidase-like activity under acidic bacterial infectious microenvironment but also superoxide dismutase-catalase-like synergistic effects in neutral or weak alkaline conditions, thus protecting normal tissues from the peroxidase-like protocol with exogenous H₂O₂ damage. Furthermore, the positive charge and macropore structure of FePO₄-HG could capture and restrict bacteria in the range of ROS destruction. Obviously, FePO₄-HG exhibited excellent antibacterial ability against MRSA and AREC with the assistance of H₂O₂. Significantly, the FePO₄-HG + H₂O₂ system could efficiently disrupt the bacterial biofilm formation and facilitate the glutathione oxidation process to rapid bacterial death with low cytotoxicity. Moreover, FePO₄-HG was unsusceptible to bacterial resistance development in MRSA. Animal experiments showed that the FePO₄-HG + H₂O₂ group could efficiently eliminate the MRSA infection and present excellent wound healing without inflammation and tissue adhesions. With further development and optimization, FePO₄-HG has great potential as a new class of antibacterial agents to fight antibiotic-resistant pathogens.

(Fe,Ni)2P allabogdanite can be an ambient pressure phase in iron meteorites

An orthorhombic modification of (Fe,Ni)₂P, allabogdanite, found in iron meteorites was considered to be thermodynamically stable at pressures above 8 GPa and temperatures of 1673 K according to the results of recent static high-pressure and high-temperature experiments. A hexagonal polymorphic modification of (Fe,Ni)₂P, barringerite, was considered to be stable at ambient conditions. Experimental investigation through the solid-state synthesis supported by ab initio calculations was carried out to clarify the stability fields of (Fe,Ni)₂P polymorphs. Both experimental and theoretical studies show that Fe₂P-allabogdanite is a low-temperature phase stable at ambient conditions up to a temperature of at least 773 K and, therefore, is not necessarily associated with high pressures. This is consistent with the textural relationships of allabogdanite in iron meteorites.

Fe-Ni-P-S Melt Pockets in Elga IIE Iron Meteorite: Evidence for the Origin at High-Pressures Up to 20 GPa

Here we report new data on high-pressure microstructures in Elga group IIE iron meteorites, made of solidified Fe-Ni-P-S melt pockets and microcrystalline aggregates, which could be formed only at high pressures and temperatures according to the experimental data. The bulk composition of the melt pockets and crystals correspond to the Fe3P-Fe3S solid solution with the closure of an immiscibility gap at pressures near 20 GPa in static experiments. Some other melt pockets fit with the Fe2S-Fe2P compositions, which could also correspond to high pressures and temperatures. The results suggest a late shock episode during the formation of the IIE iron parent body, which may be prior or due to the final disruption that caused the meteorite arrival to Earth. It also has an important implication to the shock features in other meteorites, such as ureilite.
