Combined cadmium-zinc interactions alter manganese, lead, copper uptake by Melissa officinalis

Phytoremediation Potential of Crotalaria pumila (Fabaceae) in Soils Polluted with Heavy Metals: Evidence from Field and Controlled Experiments

Phytoremediation is a useful, low-cost, and environmentally friendly alternative for the rehabilitation of heavy-metal-contaminated (HM) soils. This technology takes advantage of the ability of certain plant species to accumulate HMs in their tissues. Crotalaria pumila is a herbaceous plant with a wide geographical distribution that grows naturally in environments polluted with HMs. In this work, the bioaccumulation capacity of roots and leaves in relation to five HMs (Cr, Cu, Fe, Pb, and Zn) was evaluated, as well as the morphological changes presented in C. pumila growing in control substrate (without HMs) and mine-tailing substrate (with HMs) under greenhouse conditions for 150 days. Four metals with the following concentration pattern were detected in both tissues and substrates: Fe > Pb > Cu > Zn. Fe, Pb, and Zn concentrations were significantly higher in the roots and leaves of individuals growing on mine-tailing substrate compared to the control substrate. In contrast, Cu concentration increased over time in the exposed individuals. The bioconcentration factor showed a similar pattern in root and leaf: Cu > Fe > Pb > Zn. Around 87.5% of the morphological characters evaluated in this species decreased significantly in individuals exposed to HMs. The bioconcentration factor shows that C. pumila is efficient at absorbing Cu, Fe, and Pb from the mine-tailing substrate, in the root and leaf tissue, and the translocation factor shows its efficiency in translocating Cu from the roots to the leaves. Therefore, C. pumila may be considered as a HM accumulator plant with potential for phytoremediation of polluted soils with Cu, Pb, and Fe, along with the ability to establish itself naturally in contaminated environments, without affecting its germination rates. Also, it exhibits wide geographical distribution, it has a short life cycle, exhibits rapid growth, and can retain the mine-tailing substrate, extracting HMs in a short time.

The Influence of Copper and Zinc on Photosynthesis and Phenolic Levels in Basil (Ocimum basilicum L.), Borage (Borago officinalis L.), Common Nettle (Urtica dioica L.) and Peppermint (Mentha piperita L.)

This work is aimed at relationships which govern zinc and copper uptake by four popular medicinal herbs: basil (Ocimum basilicum L.), borage (Borago officinalis L.), common nettle (Urtica dioica L.) and peppermint (Mentha piperita L.). They are often grown in soils with significant copper or zinc levels. Herbs were cultivated by a pot method in controlled conditions. Manganese, iron, copper and zinc concentrations were determined by High-Resolution Continuum Source Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry. The efficiency of photosynthesis was estimated by measuring the chlorophyll content, water use efficiency, net photosynthesis, intercellular CO2, stomatal conductance, and transpiration rate. Phenolic compounds were determined by the Folin-Ciocalteu method. Analysis of variance showed that herbs grown in soil treated with copper exhibited a lower iron content in roots, while manganese behaved in the opposite way. The only exception was borage, where a decrease in the manganese content in roots was observed. Both copper and zinc supplementations increased the total content of phenolics, while the highest increases were observed for common nettle and basil. Peppermint and borage responded less to supplementation. In the majority of samples, zinc and copper did not significantly affect the photosynthesis. Herbal extracts from common nettle and basil had unique antioxidant properties and may be good free radical scavengers.

Quantitative analysis of Cd based on the stress effect of minerals in rice by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy

Cadmium (Cd) is a highly toxic heavy metal that can accumulate in the food chain, posing a significant threat to human health. One of the key food sources through which Cd is often observed is rice. Therefore, determining heavy metals in rice is essential to assess the risk status of rice. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has the advantages of simple sample preparation and fast analysis, which is expected to achieve real-time and rapid detection of rice. In this work, 40 naturally matured rice samples growing from the area that is possibly contaminated with Cd were collected to determine the Cd reference content in rice by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy as recommended by the Chinese National Standard. LIBS spectral acquisition and analysis are adopted as well. The Cd characteristic spectral lines were selected to predict the Cd content directly using PCA, PLSR, and ELM models, and the coefficient of determination (R2) of the models' training and prediction sets was 0.9278, 0.8920; 0.9036, 0.9771; 0.7940, and 0.8409, respectively. Further, based on the Cd stress effect in rice, the spectra of elements Mn, Mg, K, and Na with highly significant and significant correlation with Cd were selected and coupled with the Cd characteristic spectra to form a new matrix of the same size for quantitative analysis. Based on the stress effect, R2 of models' training and prediction sets was improved to 0.9786, 0.9753; 0.9395, 0.9900; 0.9798, and 0.9927, respectively. It is demonstrated that combining the stress effect when using LIBS for quantitative analysis of Cd in rice reduces the overfitting and further improves the model's prediction accuracy. This work indicates that using LIBS combined with suitable mathematical models to predict the Cd content of naturally matured rice based on stress effects in rice is feasible. It is promising to evaluate the safety of rice by analyzing LIBS spectra.

Antioxidant Activity and Photosynthesis Efficiency in Melissa officinalis Subjected to Heavy Metals Stress

The aim of this study was to assess influence of cadmium and zinc treatments on antioxidant activity combined with the photosynthesis efficiency in a popular herb lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L.). Plants were grown under greenhouse conditions by the pot method. The Mn, Cu, Cd, and Zn contents in soil and plants were measured by HR-CS FAAS. The activity of net photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, intercellular CO2, and index of chlorophyll in leaves were determined for all investigated species. Reduction of the net photosynthesis was observed for cultivations subjected to either Zn or Cd treatments. Phenolic contents were determined by the chemical Folin-Ciocalteu method, while enhanced voltammetric analysis was applied to assess the antioxidant properties of plant extracts. Both of these approaches yielded similar results. Herbal extracts had exceptional antioxidant capacities and were good scavengers of free radicals and reactive oxygen species. Structural similarity of cadmium and zinc facilitated their mutual structural exchange and prompted substantial expansion of phenolics under the mixed Zn and Cd treatments.

Mechanism of Zn alleviates Cd toxicity in mangrove plants (Kandelia obovata)

Cadmium (Cd) pollution is very common and serious in mangrove ecosystems in China. Zinc (Zn) has been used to reduce Cd accumulation in plants, and phenolic acid metabolism plays an important role in plant response to stress. In present study, in order to clarify whether Zn alleviates Cd toxicity in mangrove plants through phenolic acid metabolism, the Cd-contaminated Kandelia obovata plants were treated with different concentrations of (0, 80,300, and 400 mg·kg^-1) ZnSO₄ in a set of pot experiments and the biomass, the contents of Cd, Zn, soluble sugar, chlorophyll and the activities of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), l-phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), shikimic acid dehydrogenase (SKDH), cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase (CAD) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) in the leaves were analyzed. The results showed that Cd contents in the leaves of Kandelia obovata ranged from 0.077 to 0.197 mg·kg^-1 under different treatments, and Zn contents ranged from 90.260 to 114.447 mg·kg^-1. Low-dose ZnSO₄ treatment (80 mg·kg^-1) performed significant positive effects on the biomass, phenolic acid metabolism-related enzyme activities, antioxidant capacity, and chlorophyll and soluble sugar contents in the leaves of Cd-contaminated mangrove plants. At the meantime, the addition of low-dose ZnSO₄ promoted the biosynthesis of hydroxycinnamic acid, hydroxybenzoic acid, and enhanced the plant antioxidant capacity, thus alleviated Cd toxicity in mangrove plants.

Copper, lead and zinc interactions during phytoextraction using Acer platanoides L.-a pot trial

Of the many environmental factors that modulate the phytoextraction of elements, little has been learnt about the role of metal interactions. The study aimed to show how different concentrations of Cu, Pb and Zn in the cultivation medium influenced the biomass, plant development and phytoextraction abilities of Acer platanoides L. seedlings. Additionally, the impact on the content and distribution of Ca, K, Mg and Na in plant parts was studied with an analysis of phenols. Plants treated with a mixture of two metals were characterised by lower biomass of leaves and higher major elements content jointly than those grown in the salt of one element. Leaves of A. platanoides cultivated in Pb5 + Zn1, Pb1 + Zn1 and Pb1 + Zn5 experimental systems were characterised by specific browning of their edges. The obtained results suggest higher toxicity to leaves of Pb and Zn present simultaneously in Knop solution than Cu and Pb or Cu and Zn, irrespective of the mutual ratio of the concentrations of these elements. Antagonism of Cu and Zn concerning Pb was clearly shown in whole plant biomass when one of these elements was in higher concentration (5 mmol L-1) in solution. In the lowest concentrations (1 mmol L-1), there was a synergism between Cu and Zn in plant roots. Plants exposed to Zn5, Cu1 + Pb5, Pb5 + Zn1 and Cu1 + Zn1 were characterised by higher total phenolic content than the rest plants. Both the presence and the concentration of other elements in the soil are significant factors that modulate element uptake, total phenolic content, and plant development.

Effects of application of rice husk biochar and limestone on cadmium accumulation in wheat under glasshouse and field conditions

Cadmium (Cd) has seriously threatened the safe production of food crops. Passivator amendments are commonly used to control the soil Cd availability. Yet, few studies are tested to explore the effect of the combination of various amendments. Here, we investigated the effects of different amendments (2% rice husk biochar, 2% limestone, and 1% rice husk biochar + 1% limestone) on the growth and Cd accumulation of wheat in pot and field experiments. The results showed that under the low soil Cd condition, the maximum increase of soil pH (1.83) was found in the limestone treatment compared to CK in pot experiment. Compared with the CK, the treatment of rice husk biochar decreased soil Cd availability and grain Cd content by about 25% and 31.2%, respectively. In contrast, under high soil Cd condition, the highest soil pH was observed in limestone, while the lowest soil Cd availability and grain Cd concentrations were found in rice husk biochar treatment. In the field experiment, the treatment of 1% rice husk biochar + 1% limestone caused a significant increase of soil pH by about 28.2%, whereas the treatment of 2% rice husk biochar reduced soil Cd availability and grain Cd content by about 38.9% and 38.5% compared to the CK. Therefore, rice husk biochar showed great potential to reduce Cd availability and ensure safe food production.

Novel metallomic profiling and non-carcinogenic risk assessment of botanical ingredients for use in herbal, phytopharmaceutical and dietary products using HR-ICP-SFMS

Knowledge of element concentrations in botanical extracts is relevant to assure consumer protection given the increased interest in plant-based ingredients. This study demonstrates successful multi-element investigations in order to address the lack of comprehensive profiling data for botanical extracts, while reporting for the first time the metallomic profile(s) of arnica, bush vetch, sweet cicely, yellow rattle, bogbean, rock-tea and tufted catchfly. Key element compositions were quantified using a validated HR-ICP-SFMS method (µg kg-1) and were found highly variable between the different plants: Lithium (18-3964); Beryllium (3-121); Molybdenum (75-4505); Cadmium (5-325); Tin (6-165); Barium (747-4646); Platinum (2-33); Mercury (5-30); Thallium (3-91); Lead (12-4248); Bismuth (2-30); Titanium (131-5827); Vanadium (15-1758); Chromium (100-4534); Cobalt (21-652); Nickel (230-6060) and Copper (1910-6340). Compendial permissible limits were not exceeded. Overall, no evidence of a health risk to consumers could be determined from consumption of the investigated plants at reasonable intake rates. Mathematical risk modelling (EDI, CDI, HQ, HI) estimated levels above safe oral thresholds only for Cd (16%) and Pb (8%) from higher intakes of the respective plant-derived material. Following high consumption of certain plants, 42% of the samples were categorised as potentially unsafe due to cumulative exposure to Cu, Cd, Hg and Pb. PCA suggested a potential influence of post-harvest processing on Cr, Ti and V levels in commercially-acquired plant material compared to wild-collected and farm-grown plants. Moreover, a strong correlation was observed between Pb-Bi, Be-V, Bi-Sn, and Tl-Mo occurrence. This study may support future research by providing both robust methodology and accompanying reference profile(s) suitable for the quality evaluation of essential elements and/or metal contaminants in botanical ingredients.

Lithium Accumulation in Salvinia natans Free-Floating Aquatic Plant

The new context of the intensive use of lithium-based batteries led to increased production of Li and Li-containing wastes. All these activities are potential sources of environmental pollution with Li. However, the negative impact of Li on ecosystems, its specific role in the plants' development, uptake mechanism, and response to the induced stress are not fully understood. In this sense, the Li uptake and changes induced by Li exposure in the major and trace element contents, photosynthetic pigments, antioxidant activity, and elemental composition of Salvinia natans were also investigated. The results showed that Salvinia natans grown in Li-enriched nutrient solutions accumulated much higher Li contents than those grown in spring waters with a low Li content. However, the Li bioaccumulation factor in Salvinia natans grown in Li-enriched nutrient solutions was lower (13.3-29.5) than in spring waters (13.0-42.2). The plants exposed to high Li contents showed a decrease in their K and photosynthetic pigments content, while their total antioxidant activity did not change substantially.

Tolerance and Heavy Metal Accumulation Characteristics of Sasa argenteostriata (Regel) E.G. Camus under Zinc Single Stress and Combined Lead–Zinc Stress

Sasa argenteostriata (Regel) E.G. Camus is a gramineous plant with the potential for phytoremediation. In this study, we aimed to determine its tolerance to zinc stress and combined lead–zinc stress and the effect of zinc on its absorption and accumulation characteristics of lead. The results showed that S. argenteostriata had good tolerance to zinc stress, and S. argenteostriata was not significantly damaged when the zinc stress concentration was 600 mg/L. Under both zinc stress and combined lead–zinc stress, the root was the main organ that accumulated heavy metals in S. argenteostriata. The presence of zinc promoted the absorption of lead by the root of S. argenteostriata, and the lead content in the root under PZ1, PZ2, PZ3 and PZ4 treatments was 2.15, 4.31, 4.47 and 6.01 times that of PZ0 on the 20 days. In the combined lead–zinc stress treatments, the toxicity of heavy metals to S. argenteostriata was mainly caused by lead. Under high concentrations of combined lead–zinc stress (PZ4), the proportion of zinc in the leaf of S. argenteostriata on the 20 days increased, which was used as a tolerance strategy to alleviate the toxicity of lead.

Hydrogen sulphide and salicylic acid regulate antioxidant pathway and nutrient balance in mustard plants under cadmium stress

Cadmium (Cd), a pervasive noxious heavy metal, is a key threat to agricultural system. It is rapidly translocated and has detrimental effects on plant growth and development. Hydrogen sulphide (H₂ S) is emerging as a potential messenger molecule for modulating plant tolerance to Cd. Salicylic acid (SA), a phenolic signalling molecule, can alleviate Cd toxicity in plants. The present study investigated the mediatory role of H₂ S (100 µM) and SA (0.5 mM), individually and in combination, in modulating antioxidant defence machinery and nutrient balance to impart Cd (50 µM) resistance to mustard. Accumulation of Cd resulted in oxidative stress (TBARS and H₂ O₂ ), mineral nutrient imbalance (N, P, K, Ca), decreased leaf gas exchange and PSII efficiency, ultimately reducing plant growth. Both H₂ S and SA independently attenuated phytotoxic effects of Cd by triggering antioxidant systems, enhancing the nutrient pool, eventually leading to improved photosynthesis and biomass of mustard plants. The positive effects were more pronounced under combined application of H₂ S and SA, indicating a synergistic relationship between these two signalling molecules in mitigating the detrimental effects of Cd on nutrient homeostasis and overall health of mustard, primarily by boosting antioxidant pathway. Our findings provide new insights into H₂ S- and SA-induced protective mechanisms in mustard plants subjected to Cd stress and suggest their combined use as a feasible strategy to confer Cd tolerance.

Prediction of heavy metal Cd and stress on minerals in rice by analysis of LIBS spectra

To predict the nutrition and safety of agricultural products by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), heavy metal Cd in rice was selected as an analytical target. Mature rice grain samples from 40 growing geographical areas around Poyang Lake were picked on-site and processed by grinding to obtain the edible rice. The content of Cd in rice samples was determined by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry, and the rice pellets were detected by LIBS. The risk intake was estimated by the target hazard quotient and Chinese National Standard. Moreover, the samples were classified as clean, slight, and severe ones according to evaluation. The content of Cd was predicted by analyzing LIBS spectra coupled with the partial least square (PLS) model. The correlation coefficients (R²) reached 0.9036 and 0.9771 for the training and prediction sets, respectively, and the root mean square errors were 0.0487 and 0.027, respectively. It denotes that the PLS model has a higher prediction ability especially after LIBS spectra were processed by smoothing and multiplicative scatter correction. For the clean, slight, and severe rice samples, the LIBS intensity ratio between minerals Mg, K, Na, Si, and Mn to Ca was compared. The ratio was decreased in all samples as Cd stress increased. Correlation analysis results show that Mn displayed a highly significant negative correlation with Cd stress, while Mg, K, and Na displayed a significant negative correlation with Cd stress. The relationship between Si and Cd did not reach a significant level. This work indicated that it was feasible to use LIBS combined with a suitable data process to predict Cd content and the effect of Cd stress on minerals in rice. It is promising to evaluate the nutrition and safety of food products by analyzing LIBS spectra.

Amendments and bioaugmentation enhanced phytoremediation and micro-ecology for PAHs and heavy metals co-contaminated soils

Co-existence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and multi-metals challenges the decontamination of large-scale contaminated sites. This study aims to comprehensively evaluate the remediation potential of intensified phytoremediation in coping with complex co-contaminated soils. Results showed that the removal of PAHs and heavy metals is time-dependent, pollution-relevant, and plant-specific. Removal of sixteen PAHs by Medicago sativa L. (37.3%) was significantly higher than that of Solanum nigrum L. (20.7%) after 30 days. S. nigrum L. removed higher amounts of Cd than Zn and Pb, while M. sativa L. uptake more Zn. Nevertheless, amendments and microbial agents significantly increased the phytoremediation efficiency of pollutants and shortened the gap between plants. Cd removal and PAHs dissipation reached up to 80% and 90% after 90 days for both plants. Heavy metal stability in soil was promoted after the intensified phytoremediation. Plant lipid peroxidation was alleviated, regulated by changed antioxidant defense systems (superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, catalase). Soil enzyme activities including dehydrogenase, urease, and catalase increased up to 5-fold. Soil bacterial diversity and structure were changed, being largely composed of Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Patescibacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Firmicutes. These findings provide a green and sustainable approach to decontaminating complex-polluted environments with comprehensive improvement of soil health.

Identification of cadmium tolerant and sensitive genotypes of castor and their contrasting responses to cadmium treatment

Present study identified WM (T1) and DCH-177(T2) as cadmium (Cd) tolerant and GCH2 (S1) and GCH4 (S2) as Cd-sensitive genotypes of castor. Cd treatment (500 μM) led to a significant decline in leaf and root biomass, photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (C), transpiration rate (E), water use efficiency (WUE), photosynthetic pigments content, and altered chlorophyll fluorescence in S1 and S2 genotypes but no significant changes were detected in the T1 and T2 genotypes. The content of H₂O₂ and malondialdehyde (MDA; stable end product of lipid peroxidation) increased significantly in S1 and S2 castor plants treated with 500 μM Cd, whereas no significant alteration was observed in T1 and T2 in comparison to their respective controls. In general, Cd tolerance is associated with its reduced accumulation. However, no significant difference in Cd accumulation in roots and leaves of S1 genotype was observed compared to T1 genotype. Significant enhancement in the concentration of redox-active metal copper (Cu) was observed in roots and leaves of 500 μM Cd-treated S1 plants but not in T1 plants. Overall, our results suggest that enhanced content of Cu, H₂O₂, and MDA and reduced photosynthetic parameters might be the cause of Cd sensitivity observed in the S1 genotype.

Cu, Ni, and Zn effects on basic physiological and stress parameters of Raphidocelis subcapitata algae

The submitted work observed Cu, Ni, and Zn effects on selected physiological and stress parameters of the alga Raphidocelis (Pseudokirchneriella) subcapitata. In 96-h experiments, EC50 values for algal specific growth rates (SGR) inhibition in Cu, Ni, and Zn presence were estimated as 0.15, 0.50, and 0.20 mg l^-1. In addition to growth inhibition, the effect of metals at various concentrations on algal SGR was also monitored. While these experiments confirmed approximately the same toxicity of Zn and Cu on SGR, Ni toxicity on this parameter was observed as the lowest. In terms of the effect of metals on the level of selected photosynthetic pigments, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and carotenoids, the following inhibition orders can be established: Zn > Cu > Ni, Ni > Cu > Zn, and Ni > Cu ≥ Zn, respectively. As a novelty of our research, we included monitoring and evaluation of the intensity of stress, which was the response of algal cells to the presence of Cu, Ni, and Zn, and its correlation with respect to production factors and metal accumulation in algal cells. As stress factors, thiol (-SH) group and TBARS (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances) as significant indicators of lipid level peroxidation were determined. The content of -SH groups depended on the concentration of metal, and its level was the most stimulated by Zn, less by Cu and Ni. The TBARS content was 2 to 5 times higher in Cu than in Zn or Ni presence. In the presence of Zn and Ni, TBARS content reached approximately the same levels. For this parameter, the following rank order can be arranged: Cu >> Ni ≥ Zn. While Cu and Ni accumulation in R. subcapitata was confirmed, Zn accumulation was not determined or was below the detectable limit. Regression analyses revealed significant positive correlation between Cu accumulation and TBARS while carotenoids as possible antioxidants confirmed with TBARS mostly negative correlations.

Strategies of cadmium and copper uptake and translocation in different plant species growing near an E-waste dismantling site at Wenling, China

This study aimed to explore the interactions between cadmium (Cd) and copper (Cu) during uptake and translocation in plants growing in soil polluted with heavy metals derived from electronic waste (E-waste). We collected the roots, stems, leaves, and root-surrounding soils of ten dominant plant species growing in farmland near an E-waste dismantling site, and analyzed their Cd and Cu concentrations. Among the ten plant species, Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P. Beauv., Cucurbita moschata (Duch. ex Lam.) Duch. ex Poiret, Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud., and Benincasa hispida (Thunb.) Cogn. accumulated Cd (2.40-4.56 mg kg^-1) and Cu (19.60-35.21 mg kg^-1) in the roots. In Polygonum hydropiper L. and Sesbania cannabina (Retz.) Poir., the Cd (0.50-0.81 mg kg^-1) and Cu (11.04-15.55 mg kg^-1) concentrations were similar among the three organs. Glycine max (L.) Merr. accumulated more Cu in the roots (16.42 mg kg^-1) than in the stems (5.61 mg kg^-1) and leaves (7.75 mg kg^-1), and accumulated Cd at similar levels in the three organs (0.65-0.99 mg kg^-1). Sesamum indicum L., Bidens pilosa L., and Solidago decurrens Lour. accumulated Cd at similar levels among the three organs (0.16-3.34 mg kg^-1) and accumulated less Cu in the stems (6.89-8.28 mg kg^-1) than in the roots (12.61-21.63 mg kg^-1) and leaves (12.93-22.38 mg kg^-1). S. indicum had a stronger capacity to accumulate and translocate Cd and Cu according to transfer coefficient and translocation factor. The concentrations of Cd and Cu in soils were significantly positively correlated with those in the roots (p<0.01) but not those in the stems and leaves. We detected significantly positive correlations between Cd and Cu concentrations in the roots and leaves (p<0.01) but not in the stems. These results suggest that there is a synergetic strategy of Cd and Cu transport from soils to the roots and from the roots to the leaves, while the stems may not be the key organ controlling Cd and Cu transport in plants. These findings have important implications for the phytoremediation of soils contaminated with Cd and Cu, the mechanisms of plant Cd and Cu transport, and the food safety of agricultural products.

Hysteresis of heavy metals uptake induced in Taraxacum officinale by thiuram

Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) yields active substances frequently used in herbal medicinal preparations. Its plantations are exposed to fungal plagues which pose a threat to herbal crops. The aim of this study was to evaluate the long time effects of a fungicide thiuram on dandelion growth and photosynthesis. Additionally, the manganese, iron, copper, zinc, cadmium, and lead uptake and transport were also investigated. Plants were cultivated under greenhouse conditions by the pot method in a universal flowering soil. The elements content in soil and plants were determined by the HR-CS FAAS spectrometer. Thiuram concentrations were established by the HPLC. Those analyses showed that almost 80% of thiuram decomposed within two weeks of its application. The photosynthesis indicators suggested, that plants were in good conditions and the fungicide supplementation facilitated plant growth. The latter could be prompted by thiuram acting as a sulfur rich chemical micro fertilizer. The hypothesis, that thiuram significantly affects heavy metals interactions in dandelion was proved by the one-way analysis of variance. Notable, metals uptake did not completely recover after fungicide decomposition for all investigated elements except iron We suggest to define this chemically induced, time-dependent heavy metals migrations in the soil-plant system as hysteresis of heavy metals uptake.

The importance of Cu × Pb interactions to Lentinula edodes yield, major/trace elements accumulation and antioxidants

Due to the use of various substrates in the production of edible mushrooms which may contain metals, including Cu and Pb, it is important to understand the influence of mutual interactions between them in the process of their accumulation in fruit bodies. For this reason, the effects of Cu, Pb, and Cu × Pb on yield, accumulation of five major elements (Ca, K, Mg, Na and P), trace elements (Cu, Pb and Fe) and some bioactive compounds in Lentinula edodes fruit bodies were studied. Both the metals were added in doses of 0.1 and 0.5 mM (Cu0.1, Cu0.5, Pb0.1, Pb0.5 and their combinations). The addition of the metals resulted in a reduction in size, amount and finally yield of fruit bodies. Depending on the presence of Cu and or Pb and their concentration in the substrate, both antagonism and synergism may occur. The influence on the accumulation of other determining elements was also recorded. Among phenolic compounds, phenolic acids and flavonoids were detected. 2,5-Dihydroxybenzoic acid dominated in fruit bodies in the control variant, Pb0.1, Pb0.5 and all experimental variants enriched with Cu + Pb, while gallic acid was the major phenolic after Cu0.1 and Cu0.5 addition. Only protocatechuic acid content increased in all combinations. A significant decrease of all aliphatic acid contents in comparison to the control variant was observed in the Cu0.1 and Pb0.1 variants. Significant stimulation of aliphatic acid synthesis was recorded in Cu0.5 and Pb0.5 variants and in the mixture of both the metals. The additions pointed to the possible role of the determined molecules in detoxification mechanisms.

Plant Uptake of Lactate-Bound Metals: A Sustainable Alternative to Metal Chlorides

Global agricultural intensification has prompted investigations into biostimulants to enhance plant nutrition and soil ecosystem processes. Metal lactates are an understudied class of organic micronutrient supplement that provide both a labile carbon source and mineral nutrition for plant and microbial growth. To gain a fundamental understanding of plant responses to metal lactates, we employed a series of sterile culture-vessel experiments to compare the uptake and toxicity of five metals (Zn, Mn, Cu, Ni, and Co) supplied in lactate and chloride salt form. Additionally, primary root growth in plate-grown Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings was used to determine optimal concentrations of each metal lactate. Our results suggest that uptake and utilization of metals in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) when supplied in lactate form is comparable to that of metal chlorides. Metal lactates also have promotional growth effects on A. thaliana seedlings with optimal concentrations identified for Zn (0.5–1.0 µM), Mn (0.5–1.0 µM), Cu (0.5 µM), Ni (1.0 µM), and Co (0.5 µM) lactate. These findings present foundational evidence to support the use of metal lactates as potential crop biostimulants due to their ability to both supply nutrients and stimulate plant growth.

Potential of ornamental monocot plants for rhizofiltration of cadmium and zinc in hydroponic systems

Cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) accumulation and uptake ability have been investigated in three ornamental monocot plants (Heliconia psittacorum x H. spathocircinata, Echinodorus cordifolius, and Pontederia cordata) grown in hydroponic systems. All study plants in the highest heavy metal treatments were found to be excluders for Cd and Zn with translocation factor values < 1 and bioconcentration factor (BCF) values > 100. The highest Cd and Zn accumulations were found in roots of E. cordifolius (4766.6 mg Zn kg^-1 and 6141.6 mg Cd kg^-1), followed by H. psittacorum x H. spathocircinata (4313.5 mg Zn kg^-1) and P. cordata (3673.3 mg Cd kg^-1), respectively, whereas shoots had lower performances. However, P. cordata had the lowest dry biomass production compared to the other two plant species in this study. As a result of dilution effects, heavy metal accumulation for all study plants was lower in the combined heavy metal treatments than in solely Cd and Zn only treatments. At the end of experiments, the highest uptakes of Cd and Zn were found in H. psittacorum x H. spathocircinata (62.1% Zn²⁺ from 10 mg Zn L^-1 solution) and E. cordifolius (27.3% Cd²⁺ from 2 mg Cd L^-1 solution). Low percentage metal uptakes were found in P. cordata; therefore, E. cordifolius and H. psittacorum x H. spathocircinata are clearly better suited for removing Cd and/or Zn from contaminated waters and hydroponic systems.

Steel mill waste effects on rice growth: comparison of chemical extractants on lead and zinc availability

Zinc deficiency is widespread in cultivated soils, limiting the grain crop production and the adequate human nutrition. Several wastes from metallurgical activity can be used as Zn source, but these materials generally also have other potentially toxic elements, such as Pb, that can be highly toxic for plants and humans. This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of five chemical extractors (water, citric acid, DTPA, Mehlich 1, and USEPA 3051A) in better correlating with the bioavailable contents of Zn and Pb in soils treated with steel mill wastes (metallurgic press residue (MPR), filter press mud (FPM), and phosphate mud (PM)). Rice plants were cultivated in pots with 4 kg of a Haplic Eutrophic Gleisol and steel mill wastes were applied in soil at increasing doses (0, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16 t ha^-1). The availability of the potentially toxic elements Zn and Pb was assessed as total contents in rice shoots, grains, husks, and roots. The results showed that the USEPA 3051A method extracted greater contents of Zn and Pb from soil compared with other extractants. Due to their greater natural Pb and Zn contents, MPR and PM promoted higher contents of these elements in soils, respectively. Doses of PM influenced Zn contents in grains. After adding 16 t ha^-1 of PM, Zn content in rice grains was 0.1 mg kg^-1. However, at doses 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 t ha^-1, the average concentration of Zn in the grains was 40 mg kg^-1. The wastes MPR and FPM at 16 t ha^-1 promoted Zn concentration in grains of 42 and 45 mg kg^-1, respectively. The greatest contents of Pb in grains were found after addition of FPM at doses 0.5, 1, and 2 t ha^-1: 6.67, 4.96, and 0.45 mg kg^-1, respectively, and above 4 t ha^-1 (4, 8, and 16 t ha^-1); Pb content in grains was less than 0.3 mg kg^-1. The content of Pb in roots at 16 t ha^-1 of PM, MPR, and FPM was 18, 25, and 155 mg kg^-1, respectively, and for Zn, under the same conditions, 100, 255, and 813 mg kg^-1 for MPR, FPM, and PM, respectively. USEPA 3051A can be used to assess Pb and Zn available contents, and positive correlations with bioavailable contents of these elements in roots prove its feasibility. Further studies are necessary to state the safety of using steel mill application, including the use of other crop species, but PM is a promising waste for soil Zn fertilization.

Differential cadmium translocation and accumulation between Nicotiana tabacum L. and Nicotiana rustica L. by transcriptome combined with chemical form analyses

Cadmium (Cd) is a severely toxic and carcinogenic heavy metal. Cigarette smoking is one of the major source of Cd exposure in humans. Nicotiana tabacum is primarily a leaf Cd accumulator, while Nicotiana rustica is a root Cd accumulator among Nicotiana species. However, little is known about the mechanisms of differential Cd translocation and accumulation in Nicotiana. To find the key factors, Cd concentration, Cd chemical forms, and transcriptome analysis were comparatively studied between N. tabacum and N. rustica under control or 10 μM Cd stress. The leaf/root Cd concentration ratio of N. tabacum was 2.26 and that of N. rustica was 0.14. The Cd concentration in xylem sap of N. tabacum was significantly higher than that of N. rustica. The root of N. tabacum had obviously higher proportion of ethanol extractable Cd (40%) and water extractable Cd (16%) than those of N. rustica (16% and 6%). Meanwhile the proportion of sodium chloride extracted Cd in N. rustica (71%) was significantly higher than that in N. tabacum (30%). A total of 30710 genes expressed differentially between the two species at control, while this value was 30,294 under Cd stress, among which 27,018 were collective genes, manifesting the two species existed enormous genetic differences. KEGG pathway analysis showed the phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathway was overrepresented between the two species under Cd stress. Several genes associated with pectin methylesterase, suberin and lignin synthesis, and heavy metal transport were discovered to be differential expressed genes between two species. The results suggested that the higher accumulation of Cd in the leaf of N. tabacum depends on a comprehensive coordination of Cd transport, including less cell wall binding, weaker impediment by the Casparian strip, and efficient xylem loading.

Metal Homeostasis and Gas Exchange Dynamics in Pisum sativum L. Exposed to Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles

Cerium dioxide nanoparticles are pollutants of emerging concern. They are rarely immobilized in the environment. This study extends our work on Pisum sativum L. as a model plant, cultivated worldwide, and is well suited for investigating additive interactions induced by nanoceria. Hydroponic cultivation, which prompts accurate plant growth control and three levels of CeO2 supplementation, were applied, namely, 100, 200, and 500 mg (Ce)/L. Phytotoxicity was estimated by fresh weights and photosynthesis parameters. Additionally, Ce, Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, Ca, and Mg contents were analyzed by high-resolution continuum source atomic absorption and inductively coupled plasma optical emission techniques. Analysis of variance has proved that CeO2 nanoparticles affected metals uptake. In the roots, it decreased for Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, and Mg, while a reversed process was observed for Ca. The latter is absorbed more intensively, but translocation to above-ground parts is hampered. At the same time, nanoparticulate CeO2 reduced Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, and Ca accumulation in pea shoots. The lowest Ce concentration boosted the photosynthesis rate, while the remaining treatments did not induce significant changes. Plant growth stimulation was observed only for the 100 mg/L. To our knowledge, this is the first study that demonstrates the effect of nanoceria on photosynthesis-related parameters in peas.

Additive interactions of nanoparticulate ZnO with copper, manganese and iron in Pisum sativum L., a hydroponic study

Widespread occurrence of ZnO nanoparticles in environment follows the growing number of applications either in technology or agriculture. The impact of five forms of nanoparticulate ZnO on copper, manganese and iron uptake by Pisum sativum L. cultivated in Hoagland solutions was investigated. Plants were collected after twelve days of zinc administration. Effect of bulk ZnO has also been studied. Initial zinc concentration was 100 mg L^-1. Nanoparticles were characterized by the Transmission Electron Microscopy, Dynamic Light Scattering and Zeta potential measurements. Metal contents were analyzed using the Atomic Absorption Spectrometry with flame atomization for samples digested in a microwave closed system. Analysis of variance indicated that zinc species at either molecular or nanoscale levels altered Cu, Mn and Fe uptake and their further transport in pea plants. In particular, significant reduction of Mn and Fe combined with the Cu increase was observed. Additive interactions originated by nanoparticles affect the heavy metals uptake and indicate pollutants migration pathways in plants. Unfortunately, regulations for the plant cultivation were formulated when anthropogenic nanoparticles were not in common use. They underestimate complexity of metals interactions in either plant or habitat. Our results indicate that these additive interactions cannot be neglected and deserve further investigations.
