FeCoSe2 Nanoparticles Embedded in g-C3N4: A Highly Active and Stable bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting

Boosted photocatalytic performance of cobalt ferrite anchored g-C3N4 nanocomposite toward various emerging environmental hazardous pollutants degradation: insights into stability and Z-scheme mechanism

In this study, a highly efficient CoFe2O4-anchored g-C3N4 nanocomposite with Z-scheme photocatalyst was developed by facile calcination and hydrothermal technique. To evaluate the crystalline structure, sample surface morphology, elemental compositions, and charge conductivity of the as-synthesized catalysts by various characterization techniques. The high interfacial contact of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles (NPs) with g-C3N4 nanosheets reduced the optical bandgap from 2.67 to 2.5 eV, which improved the charge carrier separation and transfer. The photo-degradation of methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine B (Rh B) aqueous pollutant suspension under visible-light influence was used to investigate the photocatalytic degradation activity of the efficient CoFe2O4/g-C3N4 composite catalyst. The heterostructured spinel CoFe2O4 anchored g-C3N4 photocatalysts (PCs) with Z-scheme show better photocatalytic degradation performance for both organic dyes. Meanwhile, the efficiency of aqueous MB and Rh B degradation in 120 and 100 min under visible-light could be up to 91.1% and 73.7%, which is greater than pristine g-C3N4 and CoFe2O4 catalysts. The recycling stability test showed no significant changes in the photo-degradation activity after four repeated cycles. Thus, this work provides an efficient tactic for the construction of highly efficient magnetic PCs for the removal of hazardous pollutants in the aquatic environment.

Preparation of high-crystalline and non-metal modified g-C3N4 for improving ultrasound-accelerated white-LED-light-driven photocatalytic performances

As a non-metallic organic semiconductor, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has received much attention due to its unique physicochemical properties. However, the photocatalytic activity of this semiconductor faces challenges due to factors such as low electronic conductivity and limited active sites provided on its surface. The morphology and structure of g-C3N4, including macro/micro morphology, crystal structure and electronic structure can affect its catalytic activity. Non-metallic heteroatom doping is considered as an effective method to tune the optical, electronic and other physicochemical properties of g-C3N4. Here, we synthesized non-metal-doped highly crystalline g-C3N4 by one-pot calcination method, which enhanced the photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4 such as mesoporous nature, reduced band gap, wide-range photousability, improved charge carrier recombination, and the electrical conductivity was improved. Hence, the use of low-power white-LED-light illumination (λ ≥ 420 nm) and ultrasound (US) irradiation synergistically engendered the Methylene Blue (MB) mineralization efficiency elevated to 100% within 120 min by following the pseudo-first-order mechanism under the following condition (i.e., pH 11, 0.75 g L-1 of O-doped g-C3N4 and S-doped g-C3N4, 20 mg L-1 MB, 0.25 ml s-1 O2, and spontaneous raising temperature). In addition, the rapid removal of MB by sonophotocatalysis was 4 times higher than that of primary photocatalysis. And radical scavenging experiments showed that the maximum distribution of active species corresponds to superoxide radical [Formula: see text]. More importantly, the sonophotocatalytic degradation ability of O-doped g-C3N4 and S-doped g-C3N4 was remarkably sustained even after the sixth consecutive run.

Exploring the Effects of Various Two-Dimensional Supporting Materials on the Water Electrolysis of Co-Mo Sulfide/Oxide Heterostructure

In this study, various two-dimensional (2D) materials were used as supporting materials for the bimetallic Co and Mo sulfide/oxide (CMSO) heterostructure. The water electrolysis activity of CMSO supported on reduced graphene oxide (rGO), graphite carbon nitride (gC3N4), and siloxene (SiSh) was better than that of pristine CMSO. In particular, rGO-supported CMSO (CMSO@rGO) exhibited a large surface area and a low interface charge-transfer resistance, leading to a low overpotential and a Tafel slope of 259 mV (10 mA/cm2) and 85 mV/dec, respectively, with excellent long-term stability over 40 h of continuous operation in the oxygen evolution reaction.

Cobalt Incorporated Graphitic Carbon Nitride as a Bifunctional Catalyst for Electrochemical Water-Splitting Reactions in Acidic Media

Non-noble metal-based bifunctional electrocatalysts may be a promising new resource for electrocatalytic water-splitting devices. In this work, transition metal (cobalt)-incorporated graphitic carbon nitride was synthesized and fabricated in electrodes for use as bifunctional catalysts. The optimum catalytic activity of this bifunctional material for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), which benefitted at a cobalt content of 10.6 wt%, was promoted by the highest surface area and conductivity. The activity achieved a minimum overpotential of ~85 mV at 10 mA/cm² and a Tafel slope of 44.2 mV/dec in an acidic electrolyte. These values of the HER were close to those of a benchmark catalyst (platinum on carbon paper electrode). Moreover, the kinetics evaluation at the optimum catalyst ensured the catalyst flows (Volmer-Heyrovsky mechanism), indicating that the adsorption step is rate-determining for the HER. The activity for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) indicated an overpotential of ~530 mV at 10 mAcm^-2 and a Tafel slope of 193.3 mV/dec, which were slightly less or nearly the same as those of the benchmark catalyst. Stability tests using long-term potential cycles confirmed the high durability of the catalyst for both HER and OER. Moreover, the optimal bifunctional catalyst achieved a current density of 10 mAcm^-2 at a cell voltage of 1.84 V, which was slightly less than that of the benchmark catalyst (1.98 V). Thus, this research reveals that the present bifunctional, non-noble metallic electrocatalyst is adequate for use as a water-splitting technology in acidic media.

Recent development and challenges in fuel cells and water electrolyzer reactions: an overview

Water electrolysis is the most promising method for the production of large scalable hydrogen (H2), which can fulfill the global energy demand of modern society. H2-based fuel cell transportation has been operating with zero greenhouse emission to improve both indoor and outdoor air quality, in addition to the development of economically viable sustainable green energy for widespread electrochemical applications. Many countries have been eagerly focusing on the development of renewable as well as H2-based energy storage infrastructure to fulfill their growing energy demands and sustainable goals. This review article mainly discusses the development of different kinds of fuel cell electrocatalysts, and their application in H2 production through various processes (chemical, refining, and electrochemical). The fuel cell parameters such as redox properties, cost-effectiveness, ecofriendlyness, conductivity, and better electrode stability have also been highlighted. In particular, a detailed discussion has been carried out with sufficient insights into the sustainable development of future green energy economy.

Development of Electrolyzer Using NiCo(OH)2 Layered Double Hydroxide Catalyst for Efficient Water Oxidation Reaction

Over the past decade, layered double hydroxides (LDH) have been the subject of extensive investigations owing to their remarkable water splitting catalytic activity. Stability and porosity are several of the features of LDH which help them to serve as efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts. Based on these considerations, we synthesized NiCo(OH)₂ LDH and probed its OER electrocatalytic performance. The synthesized catalyst was subjected to X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy for structural analysis and investigation of its surface morphology, surface composition, and oxidation states. The LDH-NiCo(OH)₂ was anchored over the FTO surface and the fabricated electrode was found to exhibit a much lower OER onset potential of 265 mV, a much higher current density of 300 mAcm⁻² and a smaller Tafel slope of 41 mVdec⁻¹. Moreover, the designed catalyst was found to be stable up to 2500 repeated voltametric scans. These figures of merit regarding the structure and performance of the designed LDH are expected to provide useful insights into the fundamental understanding of the OER catalysts and their mechanisms of action, thus enabling the more rational design of cost effective and highly efficient electrocatalysts for use in water splitting.

Prediction of Dual-Doped Integrated CsPbBr3-CsPbCl3 Perovskite Heterostructure for Practical Photocatalytic Water Splitting with a New Descriptor

Photocatalytic water splitting has always been a field where breakthroughs are expected to solve energy and environmental problems. However, current catalysts suffer from low activity in mismatched catalytic environments and high cost. Herein, we designed a series of integrated CsPbBr₃-CsPbCl₃ heterostructures to explore their catalytic capability. Based on extensive calculations, we discovered the inner connection between dopant atoms and the catalytic performance and proposed a new descriptor by applying the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) analysis. After systematic screening, the CsPbBr₃:Ni-CsPbCl₃:Co system is found to be promising for single-catalyst overall water splitting under the same environment. Furthermore, a smaller bandgap that covers the redox potential of water splitting suggests the capability for photocatalysis. Besides, the CsPbBr₃:Ni-CsPbCl₃:Co system bulk-doped by Co could conduct the photocatalysis with better performance.
