Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study school achievement in grade 9 of compulsory school in children with congenital hypothyroidism (CH), both those detected by the national screening program and those with a normal screening result and thus diagnosed later. STUDY DESIGN Nationwide study of children in the Swedish Medical Birth Register (n = 1 547 927) from 1982 through 1997, linked to the neonatal screening CH cohort and the National School Register. Dried blood spot (DBS) samples are collected from all newborn infants, according to the neonatal screening program. Thyroid-stimulating hormone was used for CH screening. CH was defined as either having an abnormal screening result (DBS+) and treatment with levothyroxine (LT4+) or having a normal screening result but a CH diagnosis in the National Patient Register and treatment with LT4 (DBS-/ICD+/LT4+). Regression models were used to study school performance, which as measured as grade point sum and national test results. Sibling analysis also was performed to account for unmeasured familial factors. RESULTS There were 448 children who were DBS+/LT4+ and 475 children who were DBS-/ICD+/LT4+. Children with CH had lower grade point sum, adjusted β = - 6.34 (95% CI -11.7 to -1.01) and adjusted β = -10.3 (95% CI -15.5 to -5.20) for those with abnormal (DBS+/LT4+) and normal screening (DBS-/ICD+/LT4+) results, respectively. CH also was associated with lower result on the national tests, especially in mathematics. These associations remained in the sibling analyses. CONCLUSIONS Youth with CH had slightly lower school achievements compared with those without CH and compared with their siblings. CH children with a normal screening result, and thus diagnosed later, presented the lowest results on grade point sum and national tests.

Abstract
PURPOSE To describe the perceived physical and psychological needs of parents of children with allergic diseases and asthma regarding allergy management in preschools and schools. METHODS We conducted a semi-structured focus group study with parents of children (ages 2-13 years) with different types of allergic diseases with/without asthma living in Stockholm, Sweden. Data were analyzed qualitative with systematic text condensation. RESULTS Across 4 focus groups, involving 25 parents, four primary themes representing parents' expressed needs related to allergy management in preschools and schools emerged: (i) Well-implemented routines (to create an allergy-safe physical environment where personnel have clear responsibilities and communication); (ii) Allergy competence among personnel (basic and practical knowledge, being able to act in emergency situations); (iii) My child is to be treated equally (with equal conditions and for their child to being included); (iv) To feel trust (parents need to be understood, taken seriously and feel confident in the preschool/school personnel's ability to take care of their child in a secure way). CONCLUSION This qualitative study shows parents needs regarding general allergy management in preschool/school. These needs emphasized well implemented allergy routines, improved allergy knowledge and competence among personnel, importance of equal conditions for children with allergic disease and establishing a trustful allergy-supportive relationship with both parents and children. IMPLICATIONS IN PRACTICE The study findings provide crucial insights for school administrators, teachers, and health care professionals on how to improve allergy management in preschools and schools.

Abstract
Asthma is the most common chronic respiratory disease among school-going adolescents worldwide. However, the burden of severe asthma is highest in Sub-Saharan Africa. This study aimed to explore teachers' perceptions of asthma care across six African countries. We conducted focus group discussions (FGDs) using a semi-structured interview guide. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed thematically. FGDs were conducted in Kumasi(Ghana), Blantyre (Malawi), Lagos (Nigeria), Durban (South Africa), Kampala (Uganda), and Harare (Zimbabwe) between 01 November 2020 and 30 June 2021. We identified two key themes related to asthma care; barriers to asthma care and suggestions to improve the care of adolescents with asthma. Barriers reported by teachers included a lack of knowledge and skills among themselves, adolescents, and caregivers. In addition, some traditional beliefs of teachers on asthma exacerbated challenges with asthma care in schools. Regarding suggestions, most teachers identified a need for all-inclusive asthma training programmes for teachers, adolescents and caregivers, focusing on acute episodes and mitigating triggers. Utilising teachers with personal experiences with asthma to advocate and support these initiatives was suggested. Further suggestions included the need for annual screening to enable early identification of adolescents with asthma and clarify restrictions on teachers administering asthma medications. Teachers across African schools identify multiple barriers to asthma care. Structured school education programs and annual asthma screening are key to addressing some barriers to care.

Abstract
We examined the impact of child disability on Grade Points Average (GPA) using all children aged 15-16 years who completed their lower secondary education and registered with a GPA score in the period from 2016 to 2020 in Norway (n = 247 120). We use registry data that contain information on the child's main diagnosis, such as physical-, neurological- and neurodevelopmental conditions, and the severity of the condition, additional to the child's family characteristics. First, we examined whether the impact of the child's disability on the GPA scores varied by diagnosis and the severity of the child's condition. Second, we examined whether higher parental socioeconomic status (SES) buffers against the negative impact of child disability on GPA scores. Using longitudinal register data with the school fixed-effect model, the results showed that children with neurological and neurodevelopmental disabilities obtained lower GPA scores than their typically developing peers without chronic conditions, however children with asthma and diabetes had comparable GPA scores. These associations were most evident for neurodevelopmental conditions, such as ADHD and autism but also notable for neurological conditions such as epilepsy. In general, a severe condition impacts GPA scores more negatively than a less severe condition. Moreover, our analysis revealed that children of highly educated parents obtained higher GPA scores than children who had parents with short education. This applied to both disabled and typically developing peers, except children with autism and epilepsy, among whom buffering due to the parent's education did not seem to apply.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Studies on the prevalence of asthma and allergies often lack representation of the pediatric population, and their impact has not been examined using children without these diseases as a reference group. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of asthma and allergies in children under 14 years old in Spain and their impact on health-related quality of life, activities, healthcare utilization, and environmental and household exposure risk factors. METHODS Data came from a Spanish population-based representative survey of children aged <14 years (N=6297). A sample of controls (1:4) from the same survey was matched using propensity score matching. Logistic regression models and population-attributable fractions were calculated to determine the impact of asthma and allergy. RESULTS The population prevalence of asthma was 5.7% (95% CI: 5.0%, 6.4%), and of allergy was 11.4% (95% CI: 10.5%, 12.4. In children with lower percentiles of health-related quality of life (≤20th), 32.3% (95% CI, 13.6%, 47.0%) was attributed to asthma and 27.7% (95% CI: 13.0%, 40.0%) to allergy. Forty-four percent of restrictions in usual activity were attributed to asthma (OR: 2.0, p-value: <0.001), and 47.9% to allergy (OR: 2.1, p-value: <0.001). 62.3% of all hospital admissions were attributed to asthma (OR: 2.8, p-value: <0.001), and 36.8% (OR: 2.5, p-value: <0.001) of all specialist consults to allergy. CONCLUSIONS The high prevalence of atopic disease and its impact on daily life and healthcare utilization call for an integrated healthcare system focused on children and caregivers' needs with continuity of care across education and healthcare settings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is inconclusive evidence of the effect of asthma on the academic performance of young people. This study aims to compare scholastic performance and high school completion of young people hospitalized with asthma compared to matched peers not hospitalized with asthma. METHOD A population-based matched case-comparison cohort study of young people aged ≤18 years hospitalized for asthma during 2005-2018 in New South Wales, Australia using linked birth, health, education and mortality records. The comparison cohort was matched on age, gender and residential postcode. Generalized linear mixed-modelling examined risk of school performance below the national minimum standard (NMS) and generalized linear regression examined risk of not completing high school for young people hospitalized with asthma compared to matched peers. RESULTS Young males hospitalized with asthma had a 13% and 15% higher risk of not achieving the NMS for numeracy (95%CI 1.04-1.22) and reading (95%CI 1.07-1.23), respectively, compared to peers. Young males hospitalized with asthma had a 51% (95%CI 1.22-1.86) higher risk of not completing year 10, and around a 20% higher risk of not completing year 11 (ARR: 1.25; 95%CI 1.15-1.36) or year 12 (ARR: 1.27; 95%CI 1.17-1.39) compared to peers. Young females hospitalized with asthma showed no difference in achieving numeracy or reading NMSs, but did have a 21% higher risk of not completing year 11 (95%CI 1.09-1.36) and a 33% higher risk of not completing year 12 (95%CI 1.19-1.49) compared to peers. CONCLUSIONS Educational attainment is worse for young people hospitalized with asthma compared to matched peers. Early intervention and strategies for better management of asthma symptoms may enhance academic performance for students.

Abstract
This article is the third in a series on asthma. The first article explored global and UK trends in asthma and asthma care as they relate to children and young people, while the second article identified the adverse effects of air pollution on children, particularly those with asthma. This article explores the potentially significant psychosocial effects of asthma on the child and the family. A family-centred approach to care relies on healthcare professionals listening to and understanding families' health beliefs and narratives to target asthma education and aid self-efficacy, which can improve asthma control and quality of life.
