A Novel Hydrogenation of Nitroarene Compounds with Multi Wall Carbon Nanotube Supported Palladium/Copper Nanoparticles (PdCu@MWCNT NPs) in Aqueous Medium

Effect of Synchrotron X-ray Irradiation Time on the Particle Size and DFAFC Performance of Pd/CNT Catalysts

Global energy sources are limited, and energy requirements are ever-increasing due to the demand for developments in human life and technology. The environmentally friendly direct formic acid fuel cell (DFAFC) is an attractive electronic device due to its clean energy. In a DFAFC, an anodic catalyst plays an important role concerning the oxidation pathway and activity. In the present study, palladium (Pd) was synthesized by synchrotron X-ray photoreduction using various irradiation times (0.5-4 min) to control the particle size. An acid-treated carbon nanotube (A-CNT) was used as the template for Pd deposition. The A-CNT and Pd/A-CNT were examined using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy to reveal the microstructural characteristics. Electrochemical evaluation, electrocatalytic activity, and the DFAFC performance of so-obtained Pd/A-CNT catalysts were investigated. The experiment's results showed that the Pd/A-CNT-2 (i.e., synchrotron photoreduction for 2 min) underwent a direct formic acid oxidation pathway and possessed a high ECSA value of 62.59 m2/gPd and superior electrocatalytic activity of 417.7 mA/mgPd. In a single DFAFC examination, the anodic Pd/A-CNT-2 catalyst had a power density of 106.2 mW/mgPd and a relatively long lifetime of 2.91 h. Pd/A-CNT-2 anodic catalysts synthesized by surfactant-free synchrotron X-ray photoreduction with a rapid processing time (2 min) are potential candidates for DFAFC applications.

Nanocarbon-based catalysts for selective nitroaromatic hydrogenation: A mini review

Selective hydrogenation of nitroaromatics to the corresponding anilines is a key topic for research in fine chemical industrial fields. Nanocarbon materials with good chemical stability, high electrical conductivity, and good mechanical performance have been regarded as promising candidates in the catalytic field, and have shown a wide range of applications in recent years. Controllable synthesis on the structure, morphology, and active sites of nanocarbon-based catalysts is vital to the development of highly efficient catalysts. In this mini-review, we summarize the recent progresses of nanocarbon materials by focusing on the synthesis approaches and their corresponding nanostructures, including carbon nanofibers, carbon nanotubes, graphene, porous carbon, carbon spheres, and metal organic framework-derived carbon materials. The design and catalytic performance of these nanocarbon materials have been systematically discussed. Finally, the emerging challenges and future prospective for developing advanced nanocarbon-based catalysts are outlined.

Comparison of Catalysts with MIRA21 Model in Heterogeneous Catalytic Hydrogenation of Aromatic Nitro Compounds

The vast majority of research and development activities begins with a detailed literature search to explore the current state-of-the-art. However, this search becomes increasingly difficult as we go into the information revolution of 21st century. The aim of the work is to establish a functional and practical mathematical model of catalyst characterization and exact comparison of catalysts. This work outlines the operation of the MIskolc RAnking 21 (MIRA21) model through the reaction of nitrobenzene catalytic hydrogenation to aniline. A total of 154 catalysts from 45 research articles were selected, studied, characterized, ranked, and classified based on four classes of descriptors: catalyst performance, reaction conditions, catalyst conditions, and sustainability parameters. MIRA21 is able to increase the comparability of different types of catalysts and support catalyst development. According to the model, 8% of catalysts received D1 (top 10%) classification. This ranking model is able to show the most effective catalyst systems that are suitable for the production of aniline.

Glucose nano biosensor with non-enzymatic excellent sensitivity prepared with nickel-cobalt nanocomposites on f-MWCNT

NiCo (Nickel-cobalt) nanoparticles were obtained by the chemical reduction method on functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes. After this process, chronoamperometry, cyclic voltammetry, and amperometric methods were used to investigate the electrochemical and electrocatalytic behavior of NiCo@f-MWCNT against glucose oxidation. In addition, the NiCo@f-MWCNT nanocomposites were analyzed by characterization techniques such as X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) in terms of the morphological and atomic structure of prepared nanomaterials. The sensitivity and limit of detection the non-enzymatic glucose sensor (NiCo@f-MWCNT) were calculated as 10,015 μA/mM^-1 cm^-2 0.26 μM, respectively. As a result of these studies and experiments, the NiCo@f-MWCNT nanocomposite is a really good sensor and their stability showed that the current nanomaterials expressed to be new material for the electrochemical detection of glucose.

Effective and selective electroreduction of aqueous nitrate catalyzed by copper particles on multi-walled carbon nanotubes

Drinking-water contamination with nitrate ions is inevitable and wide spreading, which demands feasible removal. Water de-nitration by potentiostatic electroreduction is described here. A novel electrocatalyst based on nano-copper particles, supported onto multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), and spray-deposited onto fluorine doped tin oxide-glass substrates, is described. The Cu/MWCNT/FTO electrode has been characterized by several methods and assessed as a working electrode in aqueous nitrate ion electroreduction, in comparison with MWCNT sprayed on FTO (MWCNT/FTO) with no copper. Comparison with earlier reported electrodes is also described. XRD patterns confirm the presence of nano-copper crystallites, in the electrode, with average size ⁓45 nm. Within 2 h of electrolysis, Cu/MWVNT/FTO exhibits more than 65% removal of nitrate at -1.80 V (vs. SCE). In longer time (7 h) the electrode completely converts the nitrate into N₂ (∼65%) and (NH₄⁺) ∼35% with no NO₂^- ions. The kinetics show 0.76 order with respect to nitrate, and a rate constant 4.53 × 10^-2 min^-1 higher than earlier counterparts. The new electrode functions under various conditions of temperature, pH, electrolyte type and concentration and inter-electrode spacing, only at ambient applied potential. Moreover, the electrode exhibits stability under nitrate electroreduction conditions, and can be recovered and reused for multiple times without efficiency loss. XRD and EDS results also confirm the electrode stability after multiple reuse. Compared to earlier systems, the Cu/MWCNT/FTO is environmentally stable, safe, non-costly with high nitrate removal efficiency and selectivity.

Chemoselective hydrogenation of aromatic nitro compounds in the presence of homogeneous Pd based catalysts

The chemoselective reduction of aromatic nitro compounds to amine derivatives was easily performed with remarkable yields under ultrasonic conditions in a H₂O/MeOH mixture (v/v = 1/4). In this process, commercially available BINAP.PdCl₂ and NaBH₄ were used as homogenous catalysts and the hydrogen source, respectively. The developed method has a high economic value and can be adapted to the industry. A variety of nitroarene derivatives were reacted by undergoing the BINAP.PdCl₂ catalyzed reduction reaction. All nitroarenes were selectively hydrogenated to aromatic primary amines with quantitative yields in 15 min. The obtained primary amines were determined by ¹H and ¹³C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

Synthesis of bimetallic nanoparticles loaded on to PNIPAM hybrid microgel and their catalytic activity

This study was designed to preparecarboxyl-functionalized poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) PNIPAM microgels having excellent catalytic properties.Recently, researchers are trying to fabricate cost effective and efficient hybrid catalytic materials for the synthesis of nitrogenous compounds along with enhanced optical properties. For the same motive, synthesis of carboxyl-functionalized PNIPAM microgels was performed by using polymerization of soap-free emulsion of N-isopropyl acrylamide, which is NIPAM along with acrylic acid (AA). The thiol group was introduced through the imide bond mediated by carbodiimide, between carboxyl-functionalized microgels through carboxyl group and aminoethanethiol (AET). Copper, Palladium and Cu/Pd nanoparticles were incorporated successfully into thiol-functionalized PNIPAM microgels through metals thiol linkage. The synthesized microgels and hybrid encompassing metallic nanoparticles were characterized in detail by using Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron (XPS) and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy for structural interpretation. The thermal properties of the pure and hybrid microgels were inspected by TG analysis. The prepared nanocomposites PNIPAM-Cu, PNIPAM-Pd and PNIPAM-Cu/Pd exhibited decent catalytic properties for the degradation of 4-Nitrophenol and methylene blue, but the bimetallic Cu/Pd have remarkable catalytic properties. The catalytic reaction followed pseudo-first-order reaction with rate constants 0.223 min-1, 0.173 min-1 for 4-Nitrophenol and methylene blue in that order. In this study,we were able to establish that Cu/Pd hybrid is an efficient catalyst for 4-Nitrophenol and methylene blue as compared to its atomic analogue.

Synthesis of benzylidenemalononitrile by Knoevenagel condensation through monodisperse carbon nanotube-based NiCu nanohybrids

Monodisperse nickel/copper nanohybrids (NiCu@MWCNT) based on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) were prepared for the Knoevenagel condensation of aryl and aliphatic aldehydes. The synthesis of these nanohybrids was carried out by the ultrasonic hydroxide assisted reduction method. NiCu@MWCNT nanohybrids were characterized by analytical techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), and Raman spectroscopy. According to characterization results, NiCu@MWCNT showed that these nanohybrids form highly uniform, crystalline, monodisperse, colloidally stable NiCu@MWCNT nanohybrids were successfully synthesized. Thereafter, a model reaction was carried out to obtain benzylidenemalononitrile derivatives using NiCu@MWCNT as a catalyst, and showed high catalytic performance under mild conditions over 10-180 min.
