Abstract
Objective The association between autoimmune diseases and chronic rhinosinusitis in observational studies remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the genetic correlation between chronic rhinosinusitis and autoimmune diseases. Methods We employed Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis and linkage disequilibrium score regression (LDSC) to investigate causal relationships and genetic correlations between autoimmune phenotypes and chronic rhinosinusitis. Additionally, transcriptome-wide association (TWAS) analysis was conducted to identify the shared genes between the two conditions to demonstrate their relationship. The CRS GWAS (genome-wide association study) data and other autoimmune diseases were retrieved from ieuOpenGWAS (https://gwas.mrcieu.ac.uk/), the FinnGen alliance (https://r8.finngen.fi/), the UK Biobank (https://www.ukbiobank.ac.uk/), and the EBI database (https://www.ebi.ac.uk/). Results Utilizing a bivariate two-sample Mendelian randomization approach, our findings suggest a significant association of chronic rhinosinusitis with various autoimmune diseases, including allergic rhinitis (p = 9.55E-10, Odds Ratio [OR] = 2,711.019, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 261.83391-28,069.8), asthma (p = 1.81E-23, OR = 33.99643, 95%CI = 17.52439-65.95137), rheumatoid arthritis (p = 9.55E-10, OR = 1.115526, 95%CI = 1.0799484-1.1522758), hypothyroidism (p = 2.08828E-2, OR = 4.849254, 95%CI = 1.7154455-13.707962), and type 1 diabetes (p = 2.08828E-2, OR = 01.04849, 95%CI = 1.0162932-1.0817062). LDSC analysis revealed a genetic correlation between the positive autoimmune phenotypes mentioned above and chronic rhinosinusitis: AR (rg = 0.344724754, p = 3.94E-8), asthma (rg = 0.43703672, p = 1.86E-10), rheumatoid arthritis (rg = 0.27834931, p = 3.5376E-2), and hypothyroidism (rg = -0.213201473, p = 3.83093E-4). Utilizing the Transcriptome-Wide Association Studies (TWAS) approach, we identified several genes commonly associated with both chronic rhinosinusitis and autoimmune diseases. Genes such as TSLP/WDR36 (Chromosome 5, top SNP: rs1837253), ORMDL3 (Chromosome 13, top SNP: rs11557467), and IL1RL1/IL18R1 (Chromosome 2, top SNP: rs12905) exhibited a higher degree of consistency in their shared involvement across atopic dermatitis (AT), allergic rhinitis (AR), and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). Conclusion Current evidence suggests a genetic correlation between chronic rhinosinusitis and autoimmune diseases like allergic rhinitis, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, hypothyroidism, and type 1 diabetes. Further research is required to elucidate the mechanisms underlying these associations.

Abstract
Objective To assess the impact of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) on histopathological features and the risk of postoperative recurrence in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) patients. Methods A retrospective cohort study of CRSwNP patients who underwent functional endoscopic sinus surgery was performed. Patients were followed up for more than two years, and classified into RA and Non-RA groups, recurrent and non-recurrent groups. The influence of RA on histopathological features and the risk of CRSwNP recurrence was explored. Results A total of 517 CRSwNP patients were finally recruited, including 78 RA patients. The RA group exhibited a higher recurrence rate, tissue eosinophil counts and percentages compared to the non-RA group (P < 0.05). Tissue eosinophil count and percentage, and the prevalence of allergic rhinitis were significantly higher in the recurrent group in compared to the non-recurrent group (P < 0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified tissue eosinophil count and percentage, RA, and allergic rhinitis as significant predictors of increased recurrence risk (P < 0.05). Both adjusted and unadjusted models affirmed RA as an independent risk factor for CRSwNP postoperative recurrence (P < 0.05). Kaplan-Meier curves further indicated a higher recurrence risk in CRSwNP patients with RA than those without (P < 0.05). Conclusion Our findings suggest that RA significantly exacerbates tissue eosinophilic inflammation and independently heightens the risk of postoperative recurrence in CRSwNP patients. These insights underscore the need for tailored therapeutic strategies addressing the complex interplay between CRSwNP and RA to mitigate recurrence risks and improve clinical outcomes.

Abstract
Observational studies have linked autoimmune diseases (ADs) with rhinosinusitis (RS) manifestations. To establish a causal relationship between ADs and RS, and to explore the potential mediating role of inflammatory mediators between ADs and RS, we utilized Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. Using a two-sample MR methodology, we examined the causality between multiple sclerosis (MS), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), ankylosing spondylitis (AS), psoriasis (PsO), type 1 diabetes (T1D), Sjogren's syndrome (SS), celiac disease (CeD), Crohn's disease (CD), hypothyroidism (HT), Graves' disease (GD), and Hashimoto's thyroiditis and their association with chronic and acute rhinosinusitis (CRS and ARS, respectively).To achieve this, we employed three distinct MR techniques: inverse variance weighting (IVW), MR-Egger, and the weighted median method. Our analysis also included a variety of sensitivity assessments, such as Cochran's Q test, leave-one-out analysis, MR-Egger intercept, and MR-PRESSO, to ensure the robustness of our findings. Additionally, the study explored the role of inflammation proteins as a mediator in these relationships through a comprehensive two-step MR analysis. Among the ADs, MS, RA, T1D, CeD, and HT were determined as risk factors for CRS. Only CeD exhibited a causal relationship with ARS. Subsequent analyses identified interleukin-10 (IL-10) as a potential mediator for the association of MS, RA and HT with CRS, respectively., while C-X-C motif chemokine 10 levels (CXCL10) and T-cell surface glycoprotein CD6 isoform levels (CD6) were found to influence HT's effect on CRS. Our findings demonstrate a causative link between specific autoimmune diseases and rhinosinusitis, highlighting IL-10, CXCL10, and CD6 as potential mediators in this association.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Increasing evidence suggests that autoimmune disorders and their immunomodulating medications may increase the risk of rhinosinusitis. The goal of this study is to determine if autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases are associated with increased risk of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) in children. METHODS A retrospective case-control study of pediatric patients (age 2-18 years) seen in the West Virginia University Hospitals System in the past 10 years was performed. Cases were children with autoimmune or autoinflammatory diseases. Controls were children without any autoimmune or autoinflammatory disorders. Query of our electronic medical record (Epic) was performed using ICD-10 codes. Univariate (unadjusted) and multivariate (adjusted) logistic regression were used to calculate the strength of association of autoimmune or autoinflammatory disorders with CRS and the other airway disorders while adjusting for age, sex, and race. RESULTS 420582 pediatric patients were queried with mean age of 10.8 years (SD of 4.8, range of 2-18 years), and 47.9% being female. 1956 (0.5%) had autoimmune disorders and 293 (0.07%) had autoinflammatory disorders. Both autoimmune and autoinflammatory disorders increase the odds of having CRS in the unadjusted [OR = 3.36, p < 0.001 and 5.69, p < 0.001 for the respectively] and the adjusted [OR = 2.90, p < 0.001 and OR = 5.07, p < 0.001 respectively after adjusting for age, sex, and race] models. CONCLUSION Autoimmune and autoinflammatory disorders increase the risk of CRS and chronic rhinitis in children.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Increasing evidence suggests that autoimmune disorders and their immunomodulating medications may increase the risk of rhinosinusitis compared to rhinitis. GOAL To investigate the association between autoimmune disorders and rhinosinusitis. METHODS We performed a case-control study of patients referred to West Virginia University from August 2020 to October 2022 for rhinologic complaints. Rhinosinusitis patients were diagnosed with either chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) or recurrent acute rhinosinusitis (RARS). These patients were compared to non-rhinosinusitis patients. Patients' characteristics, comorbidities, and type of treatment of autoimmune disorders were reviewed. RESULTS The sample consisted of 527 rhinosinusitis [184 CRS without nasal polyps (CRSsNP), 263 CRS with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) and 80 RARS patients] patients and 564 non-rhinosinusitis patients. Patients with rhinosinusitis were more likely to be older, males, have asthma, and have current and past smoking history (all with p-value < 0.05). Autoimmune disorders, primary antibody deficiency, and immunomodulator agents were more common in rhinosinusitis patients (16.5 % vs 9.4 %, OR = 1.9, p < 0.001; 5.1 % vs 0.5 %, OR = 10.1, p < 0.001; and 3.8 % vs 1.1 %, OR = 3.7, p = 0.003 respectively). Multivariate logistic regression adjusting for confounders showed that autoimmune disorders were strongly associated with rhinosinusitis [OR = 1.6, 95 % CI = 1.10-2.48], whereas the immunomodulators did not reach statistical significance [OR = 2.4, 95 % CI = 0.87-6.47]. Subgroup analysis showed the autoimmune disorders did not significantly differ between CRS and RARS groups [OR = 1.0, 95 % CI = 0.5-2.1], or between the CRSsNP and CRSwNP groups [OR = 0.9, 95 % CI = 0.5-1.7]. CONCLUSION Autoimmune disorders are associated with rhinosinusitis, both CRS and RARS, independently of other risk factors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine whether antecedent sinusitis is associated with incident rheumatic disease. METHODS This population-based case-control study included all individuals meeting classification criteria for rheumatic diseases between 1995 and 2014. We matched three controls to each case on age, sex and length of prior electronic health record history. The primary exposure was presence of sinusitis, ascertained by diagnosis codes (positive predictive value 96%). We fit logistic regression models to estimate ORs for incident rheumatic diseases and disease groups, adjusted for confounders. RESULTS We identified 1729 incident rheumatic disease cases and 5187 matched controls (mean age 63, 67% women, median 14 years electronic health record history). After adjustment, preceding sinusitis was associated with increased risk of several rheumatic diseases, including antiphospholipid syndrome (OR 7.0, 95% CI 1.8 to 27), Sjögren's disease (OR 2.4, 95% CI 1.1 to 5.3), vasculitis (OR 1.4, 95% CI 1.1 to 1.9) and polymyalgia rheumatica (OR 1.4, 95% CI 1.0 to 2.0). Acute sinusitis was also associated with increased risk of seronegative rheumatoid arthritis (OR 1.8, 95% CI 1.1 to 3.1). Sinusitis was most associated with any rheumatic disease in the 5-10 years before disease onset (OR 1.7, 95% CI 1.3 to 2.3). Individuals with seven or more codes for sinusitis had the highest risk for rheumatic disease (OR 1.7, 95% CI 1.3 to 2.4). In addition, the association between sinusitis and incident rheumatic diseases showed the highest point estimates for never smokers (OR 1.7, 95% CI 1.3 to 2.2). CONCLUSIONS Preceding sinusitis is associated with increased incidence of rheumatic diseases, suggesting a possible role for sinus inflammation in their pathogenesis.

Abstract
Background Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a chronic inflammatory disease with an autoimmune background. Altered expression levels of T cell immunoglobulin and mucin-domain containing-3 (TIM-3), C-X-C chemokine receptor type 5 (CXCR5), and programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) are implicated in the progression of inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. Moreover, CXCR5+TIM-3-PD-1+ stem-like cytotoxic T cells function as memory stem cells during chronic disease processes and retain cytotoxicity-related gene networks. Objectives To explore the expressions of CXCR5, TIM-3, and PD-1 on T cells and their correlation with clinical parameters in CRS. Methods Flow cytometry was used to assess the expressions and co-expressions of CXCR5, TIM-3, and PD-1 on T cells in the tissues of the paranasal sinus and peripheral blood of patients with CRS as well as healthy controls. Immunofluorescence was used to assess the co-localization of TIM-3, CXCR5, and PD-1 with T cells. The disease severity of our patients with CRS was evaluated using the Lund-Mackay score. A complete blood count was also performed for the patients with CRS. Results Expression levels of CXCR5 and PD-1 on T cells were significantly increased in the nasal tissues of patients with CRS. Compared with those in healthy controls, patients with CRS had high percentages of CXCR5+TIM-3-PD-1+ CD8+ and CD4+ T cells in nasal tissues, while no significant difference was observed in peripheral blood levels. Patients with CRS had a higher density of nasal CXCR5+TIM-3-PD-1+ T cells than that in healthy controls. CXCR5+TIM-3-PD-1+ CD8+ T cell levels in the nasal polyps of patients with CRS were negatively correlated with the patients' Lund-Mackay scores. The levels of CXCR5+TIM-3-PD-1+ T cells in nasal tissues were also negatively associated with disease duration and positively associated with the chronic inflammatory state of CRS. Conclusions The level of CXCR5+TIM-3-PD-1+ stem cell-like T cells, especially CXCR5+TIM-3-PD-1+ CD8+ T cells, is increased in CRS. Therefore, inducing CXCR5+TIM-3-PD-1+ T cell exhaustion may be an effective immunotherapy for CRS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Nasal, paranasal sinus and mucosal disorders are common symptoms in autoimmune rheumatic diseases. Soft tissue changes and fluid accumulation in the osteomeatal complexes and paranasal sinuses manifest as opaqueness on radiological images which can be assessed using visual scoring and computational methods on CT scans, but their results do not always correlate. Using MRI, we investigate the applicability of different image analysis methods in SLE. METHODS We assessed paranasal sinus opaqueness on MRI from 51 SLE patients, using three visual scoring systems and expert-delineated computational volumes, and examined their association with markers of disease activity, inflammation, endothelial dysfunction and common small vessel disease (SVD) indicators, adjusting for age and sex-at-birth. RESULTS The average paranasal sinus volume occupation was 4.55 (6.47%) [median (interquartile range) = 0.67 (0.25-2.65) ml], mainly in the maxillary and ethmoid sinuses. It was highly correlated with Lund-Mackay (LM) scores modified at 50% opaqueness cut-off (Spearman's ρ: 0.71 maxillary and 0.618 ethmoids, P < 0.001 in all), and with more granular variations of the LM system. The modified LM scores were associated with SVD scores (0: B = 5.078, s.e. = 1.69, P = 0.0026; 2: B = -0.066, s.e. = 0.023, P = 0.0045) and disease activity (anti-dsDNA: B = 4.59, s.e. = 2.22, P = 0.045; SLEDAI 3-7: 2.86 < B < 4.30; 1.38 < s.e. < 1.63; 0.0083 ≤ P ≤ 0.0375). Computationally derived percent opaqueness yielded similar results. CONCLUSION In patients with SLE, MRI computational assessment of sinuses opaqueness and LM scores modified at a 50% cut-off may be useful tools in understanding the relationships among paranasal sinus occupancy, disease activity and SVD markers.

Abstract
Objectives: The primary aim was to determine the prevalence of gastrointestinal diseases in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), utilizing the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) in Taiwan. Several studies have supported the existence of distinct immune patterns between the Asian and Western populations in CRS patients. Through the population-based case-control study, we could compare the differences between various regions and provide further treatment strategies for subsequent studies in Asian CRS patients. The secondary aim was to assess whether different types of CRS influence the correlation with specific GI diseases. Understanding how different phenotypes or endotypes of CRS may relate to distinct GI disease patterns could provide valuable insights into the underlying mechanisms and potential shared pathways between these conditions. Methods: We use the NHIRD in Taiwan. Newly diagnosed patients with CRS were selected between January 1, 2001 and December 31, 2017 as the case group, and the controls were defined as individuals without a history of CRS. Patients with CRS were divided into two groups: with nasal polyps and without nasal polyps. We also separated GI tract diseases into four groups based on their different pathophysiologies. Results: This study included 356,245 participants (CRS: 71,249 and control: 284,996). The results showed that CRS was significantly associated with some specific GI tract diseases, including acute/chronic hepatitis B, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) with/without esophagitis, achalasia of cardia, peptic/gastrojejunal ulcer, Crohn's disease, and ulcerative colitis. In addition, when CRS was subcategorized into chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) and chronic rhinosinusitis without nasal polyps (CRSsNP), GERD with esophagitis and peptic ulcer were significantly associated with CRSsNP. Conclusions: A significant association between CRS and premorbid GI tract diseases has been identified. Remarkably, GERD with esophagitis and peptic ulcer were significantly associated with CRSsNP. The underlying mechanisms require further investigation and may lead to new treatments for CRS. Researchers can further investigate the mechanisms by referring to our classification method to determine the implications for diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract
PURPOSE Several studies have reported a possible link between chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, it remains unclear whether CRS could influence the risk of developing RA. Therefore, in this study, we focused on examining the association between CRS and RA. METHODS A total of 14,867 individuals with CRS and 14,867 without CRS were enrolled after 1:1 propensity score match from a nationwide longitudinal cohort database in South Korea. RA incidence was assessed using person-years at risk, and the hazard ratio (HR) was examined using the Cox proportional hazards model. RESULTS The incidence of RA (per 1,000 person-years) was 6.51 for those with CRS, 6.55 for those with CRS without nasal polyps (CRSsNP), and 5.96 for those with CRS with nasal polyps (CRSwNP). We found that CRS individuals had a significantly increased risk of subsequent RA development with an adjusted HR of 1.41, regardless of the phenotype (adjusted HR was 1.42 in CRSsNP and 1.37 in CRSwNP patients). Moreover, the risk of developing RA over time was relatively higher within the first 4 years after the diagnosis of CRS. CONCLUSIONS Our nationwide population-based cohort study suggests that CRS may be associated with a subsequent increase in RA events, regardless of the phenotype. Therefore, physicians should consider RA risk when diagnosing and treating CRS patients.

Abstract
Background Although previous sporadic studies have reported the associations between a few autoimmune diseases and nasal polyps, these studies have limitations such as conflicting results, small sample sizes, and low levels of evidence. Methods Several autoimmune diseases were selected as exposures while the nasal polyps were selected as outcomes. Bidirectional univariable Mendelian randomization and multivariable Mendelian randomization analyses were performed after rigorous screening of instrumental variables. Then mediation analyses were conducted to further investigate the underlying mechanisms. Results For the first time, we investigated the causal relationships between nine autoimmune diseases and nasal polyps in different genders and found: (1) there was a causal association between adult-onset Still's disease and nasal polyps; (2) sarcoidosis, ulcerative colitis, type 1 diabetes, and Crohn's disease had no significant associations with nasal polyps; (3) celiac disease showed a suggestive positive association with female nasal polyps, whereas juvenile arthritis and multiple sclerosis showed suggestive positive associations with male nasal polyps. By contrast, arthropathic psoriasis showed a suggestive negative association with nasal polyps. In addition to these nine diseases, previous controversial issues were further investigated: (1) there was a causal relationship between rheumatoid arthritis and nasal polyps, which was partially mediated by "BAFF-R for IgD+ B cells"; (2) ankylosing spondylitis showed suggestive positive associations with the female but not the male nasal polyps. Besides, we validated that there was no causal effect of autoimmune hyperthyroidism on nasal polyps. Conclusion Specific conclusions regarding the causal effects of multiple autoimmune diseases on nasal polyps are the same as above. By comparing results between different genders, we have initially observed the sex bimodality in the causal effects between autoimmune diseases and nasal polyps, with those on male nasal polyps being stronger than those on female nasal polyps. Our study lays a solid foundation for further research in the future, not only helping identify individuals susceptible to nasal polyps early but also improving our understanding of the immunopathogenesis of these heterogeneous diseases.

Abstract
Inflammatory and infectious upper respiratory diseases (ICD-10: J30-J39), such as diseases of the sinonasal tract, pharynx and larynx, are growing health problems yet their genomic similarity is not known. We analyze genome-wide association to eight upper respiratory diseases (61,195 cases) among 260,405 FinnGen participants, meta-analyzing diseases in four groups based on an underlying genetic correlation structure. Aiming to understand which genetic loci contribute to susceptibility to upper respiratory diseases in general and its subtypes, we detect 41 independent genome-wide significant loci, distinguishing impact on sinonasal or pharyngeal diseases, or both. Fine-mapping implicated non-synonymous variants in nine genes, including three linked to immune-related diseases. Phenome-wide analysis implicated asthma and atopic dermatitis at sinonasal disease loci, and inflammatory bowel diseases and other immune-mediated disorders at pharyngeal disease loci. Upper respiratory diseases also genetically correlated with autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune hypothyroidism, and psoriasis. Finally, we associated separate gene pathways in sinonasal and pharyngeal diseases that both contribute to type 2 immunological reaction. We show shared heritability among upper respiratory diseases that extends to several immune-mediated diseases with diverse mechanisms, such as type 2 high inflammation.

Thyroid Diseases and Chronic Rhinosinusitis: A Nested Case-Control Study Using a National Health Screening Cohort. Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the association between thyroid diseases and chronic sinusitis (CRS) in a matched cohort in a study conducted within the Korean National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening Cohort (2002−2015). A total of 6024 patients with CRS were 1:4-matched for age, sex, household income, and region of residence with 24,096 control participants. Effects of a previous history of thyroid disease, including hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, thyroiditis, autoimmune thyroiditis, and Graves’ disease, were investigated using conditional logistic regression. Subgroup analyses were performed in regard to the presence of nasal polyposis. A history of hypothyroidism (2.8% vs. 1.8%), hyperthyroidism (2.0% vs. 1.5%), thyroiditis (1.1% vs. 0.8%), autoimmune thyroiditis (0.4% vs. 0.3%), and Graves’ disease (0.3% vs. 0.2%) was not more prevalent in the CRS group than in the control group according to univariate analysis (all p > 0.05). Hypothyroidism was associated with CRS in the multivariate-adjusted model (odds ratio [OR] 1.25, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.00−1.57). In the subgroup analyses, thyroid diseases were not statistically significantly associated with CRS after being classified according to the presence or absence of nasal polyps. Additional studies are required to elucidate the relationship between thyroid diseases and CRS, as this may aid in screening and clinical decision making.

Abstract
In chronic upper respiratory tract diseases, increased cell proliferative activity is observed, which is coordinated by BCL-2 proteins and small non-coding RNAs. This study aimed to determine the expression of critical apoptosis markers at the mRNA and miRNA levels in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CSRwNP). The study group consisted of ten patients with CSRwNP and ten healthy subjects. To detect in situ apoptosis in the maxillary sinus mucosa, TUNEL staining was performed. The expression of transcripts was determined by RT-qPCR and included the detection of markers associated with cell survival and apoptosis, i.e., BAX, p53, p21, CASP3, CASP9, c-MYC, CCND1, BRIC5, and APAF1. Levels of miR-17-5p, miR-145-5p, miR-146a-5p, and miR-203a-3p were also measured by RT-qPCR. The obtained results indicated increased apoptosis determined by a TUNEL assay in CSRwNP patients and accompanied by an increased expression of BAX, P21, P53, CASP3, CASP9, c-MYC, and APAF-1 transcripts and decreased mRNA levels of BCL-2 and BIRC5. Furthermore, the nasal sinus epithelium of patients with CSRwNP showed increased levels of miR-203a-3p while also showing a decreased expression of miR-17-5p and miR-145-5p. Our results showed that pro-apoptotic transcripts detected at mRNA and miRNA levels might be involved in the pathogenesis of chronic sinusitis with polyps. The identification of those key molecular mediators may be applicable for the specific diagnostic and/or development of targeted therapies for chronic sinusitis with polyps.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is often associated with other comorbidities due to chronic inflammation. However, no population-based, longitudinal study has investigated the relationship between CRS and chronic skin inflammation. OBJECTIVE To investigate the potential relationship between CRS and chronic skin inflammatory diseases, such as atopic dermatitis (AD), vitiligo, and psoriasis. METHODS A total of 5638 patients with CRS and 11 276 without CRS as a comparison group, were included from the Korean National Health Insurance Service database from 2002-2013. A propensity score matching (1:2) was performed using the nearest neighbor matching method, sociodemographic factors, and enrollment year. The Cox proportional hazards model was used to analyze the hazard ratio of CRS for AD, vitiligo, and psoriasis. RESULTS Results from this study showed that patients with CRS had no significant risk of the subsequent development of vitiligo or psoriasis compared to patients without CRS. However, we found a significantly higher incidence of AD in CRS patients than in those without CRS. The incidence of AD was 63.59 per 1000 person-years in the CRS group and 45.38 per 1000 person-years in the comparison group. Additionally, young and middle-aged CRS patients were independently associated with a higher incidence of subsequent AD events, but we could not find a significantly higher incidence of AD events in the elderly group. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest there are no significant differences in the overall risk of vitiligo and psoriasis events in patients with CRS; however, we detected a higher risk of AD in young and middle-aged CRS patients. Therefore, clinicians should consider the risk of developing AD in specific patients who are newly diagnosed with CRS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ankylosing spondylitis refers to a type of autoimmune disease, which is commonly characterized by joint pain and stiffness, since the disease progression can exhibit joint deformity and other activities limited symptoms. Has significantly impacts on people's work and life. Warm acupuncture as a traditional Chinese therapy, showing several advantages (eg, safety, economy, and less side effects), has been extensively used to treat ankylosing spondylitis. However, its curative effect is supported by limited evidence. Accordingly, the present study aims to comprehensively assess the reliability of warm acupuncture in ankylosing spondylitis treatment. METHODS Randomized controlled trials were searched from the Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, Chongqing VIP Database for Chinese Technical Periodicals, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, PubMed, and EMBASE, regardless of their publication status. The deadline was November 6th, 2020. Two experienced researchers adopted RevMan V.5.3 software for literature selection, data collection, data analysis, and synthesis, respectively. In addition, the quality of the trials involved in this study was measured with the Cochrane Bias risk assessment tool, regardless of language or publication status. RESULTS The protocol will be used to assess the efficacy and safety of warm acupuncture in ankylosing spondylitis treatment. CONCLUSION This review reliably evidences whether warm acupuncture is a reliable method for the intervention of ankylosing spondylitis. INPLASY REGISTRATION NUMBER INPLASY2020110096.
