The application of starch-based edible film in food preservation: a comprehensive review

Using renewable resources for food packaging not only helps reduce our dependence on fossil fuels but also minimizes the environmental impact associated with traditional plastics. Starch has been a hot topic in the field of current research because of its low cost, wide source and good film forming property. However, a comprehensive review in this field is still lacking. Starch-based films offer a promising alternative for sustainable packaging in the food industry. The present paper covers various aspects such as raw material sources, modification methods, and film formation mechanisms. Understanding the physicochemical properties and potential commercial applications is crucial for bridging the gap between research and practical implementation. Finally, the application of starch-based films in the food industry is discussed in detail. Different modifications of starch can improve the mechanical and barrier properties of the films. The addition of active substances to starch-based films can endow them with more functions. Therefore, these factors should be better investigated and optimized in future studies to improve the physicochemical properties and functionality of starch-based films. In summary, this review provides comprehensive information and the latest research progress of starch-based films in the food industry.

Keratin-based bioplastics extracted from chicken feathers: Effect of chitosan concentration on the structural, chemical bonding, and mechanical properties of bioplastics

Keratin was synthesized by alkaline hydrolysis from chicken feathers and then continue by casting method for producing bioplastics with additional various amounts of chitosan as a filler, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and glycerol as a plasticizer. The main purpose is analysis the effect of chitosan on the structural properties using quantitative analysis of X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra, chemical bonding by Fourier transforms infrared (FTIR) spectra, and mechanical properties by texture analyser to the keratin-based bioplastics. Biodegradation of bioplastics was analysed from the loss of weight by burying in the soil. It's found that, the additional of chitosan (0 %, 2 %, 5 %, and 8 %) increased the crystallinity of bioplastics by 11.83 %, 11.12 %, 18.99 %, and 17.03 %, respectively, but decreasing tensile strength and elasticity of bioplastics. Degradation of bioplastic keratin-based shows that the addition of chitosan can reduce the degradation time which is directly proportional to the loss of CO bonds. The highest degradation rate is 89.29 % in 49 days for keratin-based bioplastics with 8 % chitosan, indicated that high potential for future production.

Laccase and dye-decolorizing peroxidase-modified lignin incorporated with keratin-based biodegradable film: An elucidation of structural characterization, antibacterial and antioxidant properties

Lignin valorization to produce functionalized materials is challenging. This study harnessed the versatile properties of lignin through a grafting reaction involving the aryl hydroxyl group of alkali lignin (AL) and enzymatically modified-alkali lignin (EMAL) using Bacillus ligninphilus-derived laccase (Lacc) L1 and C. seriivinvornas-derived dye-decolorizing peroxidase (DyP) with keratin (K) amide group. This reaction was executed utilizing an eco-friendly solvent with the aim of generating thin films. A thorough investigation was conducted, focusing on grafting AL and EMAL onto K. The incorporation of EMAL into the films enhanced tensile strength (TS) (14.8±1.8 MPa) and elongation at break (EAB) (23.7±0.3 %). Additionally, it enhanced thermal stability, suppressed the proliferation of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli), and mitigated oxidative stress. This study introduces a novel approach for lignin valorization, offering the potential to tailor mechanical properties, antibacterial and antioxidant properties of the final material, making it sustainable substitute for petroleum-based products.

Innovations in Food Packaging for a Sustainable and Circular Economy

Packaging is fundamental to maintaining the quality of food, but its contribution with a negative footprint to the environment must be completely changed worldwide to reduce pollution and climate change. Innovative and sustainable packaging and new strategies of reutilization are necessary to reduce plastic waste accumulation, maintain food quality and safety, and reduce food losses and waste. The purpose of this chapter is to present innovations in food packaging for a sustainable and circular economy. First, to present the eco-design packaging approach as well as new strategies for recycled or recyclable materials in food packaging. Second, to show current trends in new packaging materials developed from the use of agro-industrial wastes as well as new methods of production, including 3D/4D printing, electrostatic spinning, and the use of nanomaterials.

Biopolymer-Based Sustainable Food Packaging Materials: Challenges, Solutions, and Applications

Biopolymer-based packaging materials have become of greater interest to the world due to their biodegradability, renewability, and biocompatibility. In recent years, numerous biopolymers-such as starch, chitosan, carrageenan, polylactic acid, etc.-have been investigated for their potential application in food packaging. Reinforcement agents such as nanofillers and active agents improve the properties of the biopolymers, making them suitable for active and intelligent packaging. Some of the packaging materials, e.g., cellulose, starch, polylactic acid, and polybutylene adipate terephthalate, are currently used in the packaging industry. The trend of using biopolymers in the packaging industry has increased immensely; therefore, many legislations have been approved by various organizations. This review article describes various challenges and possible solutions associated with food packaging materials. It covers a wide range of biopolymers used in food packaging and the limitations of using them in their pure form. Finally, a SWOT analysis is presented for biopolymers, and the future trends are discussed. Biopolymers are eco-friendly, biodegradable, nontoxic, renewable, and biocompatible alternatives to synthetic packaging materials. Research shows that biopolymer-based packaging materials are of great essence in combined form, and further studies are needed for them to be used as an alternative packaging material.

Molecular design and experimental study of deep eutectic solvent extraction of keratin derived from feathers

Feather keratin has a complex structure, hard texture and must be treated to improve its bioavailability. In this paper, according to the designability of DES, some deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were prepared to degrade feathers and extract keratin. Calculations by quantum chemical methods showed that DESs were considered molecular scissors with the ability to break initial hydrogen bonds and form new bonds only when the Gibbs free energy change for the degradation process was ΔG < 0, i.e., hydrogen binding energy ΔE < -0.3038 kcal/mol. Then, the degradation mechanism was predicted to provide guidance for the molecular design of DES. Finally, experimental results showed that the same ratio of choline chloride-based DESs had higher catalytic performance, in which [ChCl][P][ZnCl₂] 1:5:2 was used with a high yield of keratin of 85.46 %. DES had a high catalytic performance after multiple recycling cycles and this method has no H₂S gas generation, which improves the atomic utilization.

Turning Food Protein Waste into Sustainable Technologies

For each kilogram of food protein wasted, between 15 and 750 kg of CO₂ end up in the atmosphere. With this alarming carbon footprint, food protein waste not only contributes to climate change but also significantly impacts other environmental boundaries, such as nitrogen and phosphorus cycles, global freshwater use, change in land composition, chemical pollution, and biodiversity loss. This contrasts sharply with both the high nutritional value of proteins, as well as their unique chemical and physical versatility, which enable their use in new materials and innovative technologies. In this review, we discuss how food protein waste can be efficiently valorized not only by reintroduction into the food chain supply but also as a template for the development of sustainable technologies by allowing it to exit the food-value chain, thus alleviating some of the most urgent global challenges. We showcase three technologies of immediate significance and environmental impact: biodegradable plastics, water purification, and renewable energy. We discuss, by carefully reviewing the current state of the art, how proteins extracted from food waste can be valorized into key players to facilitate these technologies. We furthermore support analysis of the extant literature by original life cycle assessment (LCA) examples run ad hoc on both plant and animal waste proteins in the context of the technologies considered, and against realistic benchmarks, to quantitatively demonstrate their efficacy and potential. We finally conclude the review with an outlook on how such a comprehensive management of food protein waste is anticipated to transform its carbon footprint from positive to negative and, more generally, have a favorable impact on several other important planetary boundaries.

From trash to treasure: review on upcycling of fruit and vegetable wastes into starch based bioplastics

Growing public concern toward environmental sustainability is currently motivating a paradigm shift toward designing easily degradable plastics that can replace conventional synthetic plastics. The massive rise in food waste generation has led to an increased burden on landfills, thereby resulting in the higher emission of greenhouse gases. Using this food waste to produce bioplastics will benefit not only the environment but also develop a systematic food waste management system. Moreover, bioplastics are preferred due to the use of biomaterials derived from renewable resources. Furthermore, bioplastics degrade faster than conventional synthetic plastics, which take years to degrade. The biodegradation of bioplastics occurs under normal environmental conditions and disintegrates into carbon dioxide, water, biomass, and inorganic compounds without producing hazardous residues. In this review, we will discuss the synthesis of starch based bioplastics using discarded parts of various fruits and vegetables. Furthermore, we will address the importance of various components in the development of starch based bioplastics, such as fillers, plasticizers, and other additives that are essential in providing the bioplastic with different physio-mechanical properties. Therefore, bioplastic production using food waste will pave the way to achieve systematic waste management and environmental sustainability in the near future.

Lignin and Keratin-Based Materials in Transient Devices and Disposables: Recent Advances Toward Materials and Environmental Sustainability

Rising concerns and the associated negative implications of pollution from e-waste and delayed decomposition and mineralization of component materials (e.g., plastics) are significant environmental challenges. Hence, concerted pursuit of accurate and efficient control of the life cycle of materials and subsequent dematerialization in target environments has become essential in recent times. The emerging field of transient technology will play a significant role in this regard to help overcome current environmental challenges by enabling the use of novel approaches and new materials with unique functionalities to produce devices and materials such as disposable diagnostic devices, flexible solar panels, and foldable displays that are more ecologically benign, low-cost, and sustainable. The prerequisites for materials employed in transient devices and disposables include biodegradability, biocompatibility, and the inherent ability to mineralize or dissipate in target environments (e.g., body fluids) in a short lifetime with net-zero impact. Biomaterials such as lignin and keratin are well-known to be among the most promising environmentally benign, functional, sustainable, and industrially applicable resources for transient devices and disposables. Consequently, considering the current environmental concerns, this work focuses on the advances in applying lignin and keratin-based materials in short-life electronics and single-use consumables, current limitations, future research outlook toward materials, and environmental sustainability.

Fabrication, characterization and antifungal evaluation of polyphenolic extract activated keratin starch coating on infected tomato fruits

In recent times, the application of protein-based bio-composite edible films in postharvest preservation of food and agricultural products is attracting increased attention due to their biodegradability, eco-friendliness and sustainability. In this study, an avocado pear peel polyphenolic extract enriched keratin-starch composite film was fabricated, characterized and evaluated for antimicrobial activity against fungal infected tomato fruits after 6 days of storage at room (25 ± 2 °C) temperature. The SEM/EDX and FTIR results revealed the successful film formation with high degree of compatibility and homogeneity. Following a 6-day post-coating loss in weight of the coated tomato fruits decreased significantly (p < 0.05) with increasing extract concentration while titratable acidity showed a significant (p < 0.05) increase with increasing extract load. Ascorbic acid and lycopene contents were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in the avocado pear peel polyphenolic extract-loaded films. No significant effect was observed in catechol oxidase activity of the tomato extract across the different treatment groups. In addition, fungal growth inhibition showed a dose dependent increase consistent with avocado pear peel polyphenolic load in coated tomato fruits compared to control. Results obtained in this study showed that polyphenolic activated keratin-starch coating was able to reduce spoilage-induce weight loss as well as conserve the overall quality (including titratable acid levels, lycopene and ascorbic acid contents) of fungal-infected tomato fruit and reduce microbial growth. Therefore polyphenolic activated keratin-starch coating could serve as a sustainable and ecofriendly postharvest preservation method to prolong the shelf life of tomato fruits.

Advances in biomaterial production from animal derived waste

Animal derived waste, if not disposed properly, could pose a threat to the environment and its inhabitants. Recent advancements in biotechnological and biomedical interventions have enabled us to bioengineer these valuable waste substrates into biomaterials with diversified applications. Rearing and processing of poultry, cattle, sheep, goat, pig, and slaughterhouse waste can aid in effective waste valorization for the fabrication of biopolymers, composites, heart valves, collagen, scaffolds, pigments and lipids, among other industrially important biomaterials. Feathers and eggshell waste from the poultry industry can be used for producing keratinous proteins and biocomposites, respectively. Cattle dung, hoofs and cattle hide can be used for producing hydroxyapatite for developing scaffolds and drug delivery systems. Porcine derived collagen can be used for developing skin grafts, while porcine urinary bladder has antiangiogenic, neurotrophic, tumor-suppressive and wound healing properties. Sheep teeth can be used for the production of low-cost hydroxyapatite while goat tissue is still underutilized and requires more in-depth investigation. However, hydrolyzed tannery fleshings show promising potential for antioxidant rich animal feed production. In this review, the recent developments in the production and application of biomaterials from animal waste have been critically analyzed. Standardized protocols for biomaterial synthesis on a pilot scale, and government policy framework for establishing an animal waste supply chain for end users seem to be lacking and require urgent attention. Moreover, circular bioeconomy concepts for animal derived biomaterial production need to be developed for creating a sustainable system.
