Abstract
Good-quality sleep is defined by its ability to minimize disturbances, provide adequate duration, and maintain a balanced progression through sleep stages. Sleep disturbance is a common complaint in people living with HIV/AIDS. Despite the influence of sleep disturbance on treatment adherence, quality of life, work productivity, risk of chronic illness. Studies have reported sleep disturbances among HIV/AIDS patients in sub-Saharan African countries (SSA), yielding varied results at the country level. Therefore, conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis is essential. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the prevalence of poor sleep quality and identify associated factors among HIV/AIDS patients in sub-Saharan African countries. We systematically searched across various databases, including PubMed, African Journals Online, Scopus, Cochrane Library, HINARI, and Science Direct. Additionally, we conducted searches using Google and Google Scholar search engines. Microsoft Excel was used for data extraction, and the data were analysed using STAT version 17.0. We assessed heterogeneity using Cochran's Q test and I2 test and checked for small study effects using funnel plot symmetry and Egger's test. Pooled prevalence and associated factors were estimated using a random-effects model at a 95% confidence interval (CI) and significance level of p < 0.05. To identify factors associated with poor sleep quality among individuals living with HIV/AIDS, odds ratios (ORs) and their corresponding 95% CI were calculated. This analysis combined data from 15 separate studies involving a total sample size of 5176 participants. The pooled prevalence of poor sleep quality among HIV/AIDS patients in SSA countries was 49.32% (95% CI 41.32-56.8%). Factors significantly associated with poor sleep quality included depression (OR 2.78; 95% CI 1.21-6.40) and CD4 count < 200 cells/mm3 (AOR 3.15; 95% CI 2.41-4.15). In this study the prevalence of poor sleep quality among HIV/AIDS patients in SSA was higher and differs across the countries, ranging from 21.7 to 73.7%. The findings underscore the urgent necessity for programs aimed at improving sleep quality, particularly in addressing factors such as participant income and depression that are linked to poor sleep quality in HIV/AIDS patients.Systematic review registration: PROSPERO CRD42024517229.

Abstract
Subjective cognitive complaints (SCCs) are a crucial modifiable risk factor for dementia. There is increasing interest in the association between SCC and sleep disturbance; however, the effects of sleep disturbance on SCC development among community-dwelling elderly individuals in Japan remain unclear. We aimed to cross-sectionally investigate the association between SCC and sleep disturbance, with adjustment for multiple factors related to cognitive decline, among 241 community-dwelling elderly persons without cognitive impairment. The measures were SCCs (Kihon Checklist-Cognitive Function, KCL-CF), sleep disturbance (Japanese version of the Athens Insomnia Scale, AIS-J), general cognitive function (Mini-Mental State Examination), and depressive symptoms (five-item version of the Geriatric Depression Scale [GDS-5]). The following data were collected: sex, age, educational history, whether the participants had visited a medical institution for diseases (hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, heart disease), and the presence/absence of established risk factors (hearing loss, history of head injury, drinking habits, smoking habits, social isolation, and physical inactivity and activity). Based on the KCL-CF, 96 and 145 participants were considered to have and lack SCCs, respectively. On logistic regression analysis, the AIS-J score and smoking history were significantly associated with SCCs. Our findings suggest that sleep disturbance is associated with SCC development among community-dwelling elderly people in Japan. Evaluating and managing sleep disturbances can be important in preventing SCCs and dementia.

Abstract
Background Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) in older individuals has been implicated as a possible precursor to Alzheimer's disease. Poor sleep quality and anxiety/depressive symptoms have been linked to the progression of SCD, but these associations and older adults' worries have yet to be fully established in the Chinese older adult population, which is one of the largest in the world. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between sleep quality, anxiety/depression symptoms, and worries, and SCD prevalence among Chinese community-dwelling older individuals. Methods A total of 707 adults aged between 60 and 99 from Shanghai, China, completed self-report questionnaires that covered their cognitive and mental well-being, as well as demographic information. Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) was evaluated using the memory/cognition syndromes of the old adult self-report (OASR). Sleep quality, anxiety/depression, and worries were measured from their respective sections of the OASR. Results The general linear regression models showed that poorer sleep quality was associated with an increased prevalence of anxiety/depression symptoms, worries, and SCD among older adults. As suggested by the mediation analysis, anxiety/depression and worries were significant mediators in the relationship between sleep quality and SCD prevalence, and these two factors also have a serial mediation effect between sleep quality and SCD prevalence. Conclusions Poorer sleep quality is associated with a higher rate of SCD among older adults, and a higher prevalence of anxiety/depression and worries mediate this relationship, suggesting possible mechanism pathways that lead to SCD. These factors may provide the basis for early, targeted interventions for older adults' mental health preservation and improved quality of life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The use of structural and perfusion brain imaging in combination with behavioural information in the prediction of cognitive syndromes using a data-driven approach remains to be explored. Here, we thus examined the contribution of brain structural and perfusion imaging and behavioural features to the existing classification of cognitive syndromes using a data-driven approach. METHODS Study participants belonged to the community-based Biomarker and Cognition Cohort Study in Singapore who underwent neuropsychological assessments, structural-functional MRI and blood biomarkers. Participants had a diagnosis of cognitively normal (CN), subjective cognitive impairment (SCI), mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia. Cross-sectional structural and cerebral perfusion imaging, behavioural scale data including mild behaviour impairment checklist, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Depression, Anxiety and Stress scale data were obtained. RESULTS Three hundred seventy-three participants (mean age 60.7 years; 56% female sex) with complete data were included. Principal component analyses demonstrated that no single modality was informative for the classification of cognitive syndromes. However, multivariate glmnet analyses revealed a specific combination of frontal perfusion and temporo-frontal grey matter volume were key protective factors while the severity of mild behaviour impairment interest sub-domain and poor sleep quality were key at-risk factors contributing to the classification of CN, SCI, MCI and dementia (p < 0.0001). Moreover, the glmnet model showed best classification accuracy in differentiating between CN and MCI cognitive syndromes (AUC = 0.704; sensitivity = 0.698; specificity = 0.637). CONCLUSIONS Brain structure, perfusion and behavioural features are important in the classification of cognitive syndromes and should be incorporated by clinicians and researchers. These findings illustrate the value of using multimodal data when examining syndrome severity and provide new insights into how cerebral perfusion and behavioural impairment influence classification of cognitive syndromes.

Abstract
Introduction The rise in the elderly population has brought attention to mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Sleep disorders also affect many older adults, indicating an important area of research for disturbed sleep and faster brain aging. This population-based study aimed to investigate the association of several sleep indicators with cognitive performance. Methods This cross-sectional study focused on adults over 50 in the Ardakan Cohort Study on Aging (ACSA). MCI was evaluated using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Abbreviated Mental Test score (AMTS) in literate and illiterate individuals. Sleep characteristics were collected using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Epworth Sleepiness Scale, and Berlin questionnaire. The logistic regression models were used to analyze the data. Results Overall, 3,380 literate and 1,558 illiterate individuals were included. In both groups, participants with MCI had a significantly higher PSQI global score (p < 0.05). Also, among the literate individuals, a significantly higher risk of having sleep-disordered breathing and poor sleep quality was observed in participants with MCI (p < 0.05). In illiterate individuals, higher sleep latency than 15 min increased odds of MCI (p < 0.05). However, after adjusting for all variables, only literate individuals with a sleep duration of more than 8 h had 66 percent increased odds of having MCI (p = 0.033). Conclusion Sleep duration might be associated with cognitive function in the older Iranian population. Our findings underscore the importance of considering sleep patterns in relation to cognitive health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many family caregivers of people with dementia (PwDs) have sleep problems and poor sleep quality. Sleep may be negatively affected by caring for a family member with dementia, especially a spouse. PURPOSE This study was designed to assess sleep quality in spouse caregivers of PwDs and determine the impact of care provision on their sleep quality. METHODS A secondary analysis of 58,050 participants in the 2018 Korea Community Health Survey was conducted. To prevent selection bias, a propensity score matching analysis was performed. Multiple logistic regression analysis was conducted to investigate the predictors of sleep quality. RESULTS After obtaining a propensity score matching threshold of 3:1, the percentage of poor sleepers was 24.2% in the control group and 33.3% in the spouse-caregiver group, which indicates a significant difference (χ 2 = 11.79, p = .001). After adjusting for depressive symptoms in the multiple logistic analyses, no intergroup difference was found in terms of risk of poor sleep quality (odds ratio = 1.12, 95% CI [0.90, 1.61]). CONCLUSIONS/IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE The findings of this study support that spouse caregivers of PwDs have poorer sleep quality than their nonspouse peers and that management of depressive symptoms is important to improving the sleep quality of spouses providing care to PwDs. Nursing interventions such as light therapy and exposure to sunlight during daytime hours to both improve sleep quality and reduce depressive symptoms can improve sleep quality in this vulnerable caregiver group.

Abstract
Cognitive decline usually begins after individuals reach maturity, which is more evident in late adulthood. Rapid and constant cognitive screenings allow early detection of cognitive decline and motivate individuals to participate in prevention interventions. Due to accelerated technological advances, cognitive screening and training are now available to the layperson using electronic devices connected to the internet. Large datasets generated by these platforms provide a unique opportunity to explore cognitive development throughout life and across multiple naturalistic environments. However, such data collection mechanisms must be validated. This study aimed to determine whether the data gathered by commercial visuospatial and phonological working memory tests (CogniFit Inc., San Francisco, USA) confirm the well-established argument that age predicts cognitive decline. Data from 3,212 participants (2,238 females) who were 45 years old or older were analyzed. A linear regression analysis explored the relationship between age and working memory while controlling for gender, sleep quality, and physical activity (variables that are known to affect working memory). We found that age negatively predicts working memory. Furthermore, there was an interaction between age and gender for visuospatial working memory, indicating that although male participants significantly outperformed females, the relationship between age and working memory differs for females and males. Our results suggest that the computerized assessment of visuospatial and phonological working memory is sensible enough to predict cognitive functions in aging. Suggestions for improving the sensitivity of self-reports are discussed. Further studies must explore the nature of gender effects on cognitive aging.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to investigate the relationship between smoking and subjective sleep quality in the Korean adult population. METHODS We designed a cross-sectional survey using data from the 2018 Korean Community Health Service Conditions Survey and selected smoking status as our variable of interest. We divided the participants into people who currently, never, and formerly smoked, those who smoked < 20 cigarettes/day, and those who smoked > 20 cigarettes/day. Subjective sleep quality was analyzed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed for statistical analysis. RESULTS A total of 174,665 participants were enrolled. People who formerly and currently smoked were found to have poorer subjective sleep quality than those who never smoked. The odds of poor subjective sleep quality in people who smoked > 20 cigarettes/day were 1.15 times (95% confidence interval: 1.09-1.21) for men and 1.51 times (95% confidence interval: 1.22-1.86) for women, compared with men and women who never smoked. CONCLUSIONS Smoking was negatively associated with subjective sleep quality. Smoking cessation programs and lifestyle improvement education may be justifiable to improve the quality of sleep in Korean adults.

Abstract
PURPOSE To examine the association between consistent subjective cognitive decline and fall occurrence six months later. METHOD A cohort study was conducted at two time points in community-dwelling older adults. The first survey was conducted from May to July 2020 and the second from November 2020 to January 2021. Older adults without missing data who had not fallen during the past year were analyzed. The questionnaire included sociodemographic data, a questionnaire for medical checkup of older adults, and a frailty screening index. We divided the participants into three groups according to the occurrence of subjective cognitive decline (SCD): 1) no SCD (did not complain of SCD at both time points), 2) unstable SCD (complained of SCD once), and 3) consecutive SCD (consistently complained of SCD). Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to examine the association between fall occurrence and SCD. Fall occurrences were obtained from the second survey. RESULTS In total, 322 participants were included in the analysis. The numbers of patients with no SCD, unstable SCD, and consecutive SCD were 226 (70.2%), 61 (19.0%), and 35 (10.9%), respectively. In the second survey, the number of falls was 26 (8.1%). Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that consecutive SCD was associated with fall occurrence, even after adjusting for age, sex, comorbidity, cohabitants, and frailty status (OR:3.143, 95% CI:1.076-9.388); however, unstable SCD was not (OR:2.348, 95% CI:0.816-6.468). CONCLUSION Consistent complaints of SCD were associated with the occurrence of falls. We highlighted the importance of evaluating SCD over time when considering falls.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The adverse impact of depressive symptoms on adolescents' physical and psychological health is becoming increasingly prominent. This study aims to examine the association between sleep duration, cognitive function, and depressive symptoms among Chinese adolescents. METHODS This study used data on a sample of 3724 adolescents collected from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS). The multivariate logistic regression was conducted to estimate the association between sleep duration, cognitive function (measured by mathematics and vocabulary), and depressive symptoms among Chinese adolescents; the mediating effects of cognitive function were calculated by mediating model. RESULTS The study found that approximately 6.49 % of Chinese adolescents had depressive symptoms, with an average CES-D8 score of 4.27 (SD: 3.11). Adolescents who reported a sleep duration of <6 h/night (OR = 2.34; 95 % CI = 1.30, 4.24) were at a higher risk of depressive symptoms, and the adolescents who had higher mathematics scores (>75 %) were more likely to be at a lower risk of depressive symptoms. Besides, the cognitive function competitively mediated the effect of sleep duration on depressive symptom (indirect effect = 0.043; 95 % CI = 0.023, 0.064). LIMITATIONS This is a cross-sectional study; all questions were self-reported; the sleep variable only included the sleep duration. CONCLUSIONS Our study highlights that short sleep duration might increase the risk of depressive symptoms, and increasing cognitive function might reduce the occurrence of depressive symptoms in Chinese adolescents. The results displayed that sleep duration had a negatively direct effect on depressive symptoms, but the indirect effects of sleep duration on depressive symptoms via the cognitive function (i.e., mathematics and vocabulary tests) were significantly positive, indicating that the relationship between sleep duration and depressive symptoms was competitively mediated by cognitive function.

Abstract
Background: The outbreak of COVID-19 has seriously threatened the health of people around the world. To prevent the spread of the epidemic, Chinese universities have implemented closed management of campuses. The implementation of restrictive measures has gradually caused changes in the quality of sleep and the psychological state of college students. In addition, college students are faced with the dual pressure of employment and study, and the psychological pressure is huge. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate sleep and depressive symptoms among college students. Methods: Using the method of stratified cluster sampling, 6695 college students were selected from three universities in Jiangxi, Anhui, and Xinjiang provinces from April to May 2022. The Chinese version of the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) and the self-rating depression scale (SDS) were used for the survey. Hierarchical logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the relationship between the PSQI and the SDS. Results: Overall, during the outbreak of COVID-19, 69.0% of males and 73.5% of females had poor sleep quality among Chinese college students and the detection rate of depressive symptoms was 43.6% for males and 47.8% for females, respectively. Taking students with good sleep quality as references, after controlling for covariates, hierarchical logistic regression shows that Chinese college students with poor sleep quality have a higher OR value (OR = 12.0, 95%CI: 10.2~14.1, p < 0.001), especially in males (OR = 43.8, 95%CI:30.2~63.6, p < 0.001). For both males and females, the OR value of college students with the following characteristics was higher: rural college students (males, OR = 50.32, 95%CI: 32.50−77.93; females, OR = 8.03, 95%CI: 6.45−9.99), overweight college students (males, OR = 62.17, 95%CI: 19.47−198.53; females, OR = 16.67, 95%CI: 6.48−42.88), and college students drinking sugar-sweetened beverages (males, OR = 59.00, 95%CI: 36.96−94.18; females, OR = 8.16, 95%CI: 6.63−10.05) (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Poor sleep quality is associated with depressive symptoms among Chinese college students, especially college males. Our research suggests that it is necessary to consider the improvement of sleep quality and depressive symptoms among college students during the COVID-19 epidemic.

Abstract
Symptoms of depression and anxiety usually co-occur and are inextricably linked to sleep disturbance. However, little is known about the symptom-to-symptom relationships among these three mental disorders. Hence, to improve our understanding of concurrent depression, anxiety, and sleep disturbance, we used the network analysis approach to construct an interplay relationship among the above three mental disorders and identify which specific symptoms bridge these aggregations. We collected data from a large sample (N = 6710, male = 3074, female = 3636; mean age = 19.28) at a university. We estimated the symptom network structure of depression, anxiety, and sleep disturbance as assessed by the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7, and Youth Self-Rating Insomnia Scale during the COVID-19 lockdown. We further investigated four goals: first, identifying the individual core symptoms in the network by the index of "expected influence"; second, determining the bridge symptoms that play roles in linking different mental disorders by the index of bridge expected influence (1-step); third, examining the robustness of all results; and fourth, providing an overall structure that may or may not differ by sex. The network structure was stable, accurate, and predictable. Items referring to sleep dissatisfaction, poor sleep quality, and uncontrollable worry were potentially core symptoms in the interplay among depression, anxiety, and sleep disturbance. Sleep, guilt, restlessness, irritability, and feeling afraid can function as bridges among depression, anxiety, and sleep disturbance, which is clinically relevant and theoretically important. The results suggested that the network structures significantly differed between the female and male networks. Robustness tests also revealed that the results were reliable.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is a common mental health disorder. Despite sleep disturbance being associated with depression, limited data regarding the association of sleep quality with depression exists. We aimed to investigate the association between sleep quality and depressive symptoms in the South Korean population. METHODS This cross-sectional study used data from the 2018 Korean Community Health Survey, a nationwide representative survey conducted annually at national public health centers since 2008. The study population comprised 176,794 individuals (78,356 male and 98,438 female) aged 19 years and over. Sleep quality was measured using the Korean version of Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and depressive symptoms with the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. Data were analyzed using multiple logistic regression. RESULTS The average PSQI score was 5.03 for men and 5.98 for women. Individuals of both sexes with poor sleep quality were more likely to be depressed (men: odds ratio (OR) = 7.02 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 6.17-7.99]). In subgroup analysis stratified by independent variables, participants with the following characteristics had greater association between poor sleep quality and depressive symptoms: unmarried, college or higher education, white-collar occupation, current smoker, frequent drinker, walking physical activity, and no-stress. LIMITATIONS Limitations included the cross-sectional nature of the study, use of only secondary data and a self-rated questionnaire for evaluating depressive symptoms, and inherent limitations in the PSQI. CONCLUSIONS Poor sleep quality may contribute to depressive symptoms among Korean adults. Screening for poor sleep quality and implementing measures to improve sleep behaviors may prevent the onset of depression.

Abstract
Objective Studies of sleep duration in relation to the risk of sensory impairments other than dementia are scarce. Little is known about the associations between sleep duration and sensory impairments in China. This study aims to explore the associations between sleep duration and single or dual sensory impairments (visual and/or hearing). Methods This cross-sectional study used the data from 17,668 respondents were drawn from the 2018 survey of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), an ongoing national longitudinal study of Chinese adults aged 45 years and above. The duration of sleep per night was obtained from face-to-face interviews. The presence of sensory impairments was measured by self-reported visual and hearing functions. Multivariable generalized linear models (GLM) with binomial family and log link to assess the associations between sleep duration and sensory impairments. Results Of the 17,668 respondents, 8,396 (47.5%) were men. The mean (SD) age was 62.5 (10.0) years old. Respondents with short (≤ 4, 5 h per night) sleep duration had a significantly higher risk of visual, hearing and dual sensory impairments than those who slept for 7 h per night after adjusting for covariates (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, respondents who slept for 6 h per night had a higher risk of hearing impairment (P = 0.005). Further analysis suggested a U-shaped association between sleep duration and sensory impairments. When sleep duration fell below 8 h, increased sleep duration was associated with a significantly lower risk of visual (OR, 0.93; 95%CI, 0.88–0.98; P = 0.006), hearing (OR, 0.89; 95% CI, 0.86–0.93; P < 0.001), and dual (OR, 0.90; 95% CI, 0.87–0.94; P < 0.001) impairments. When sleep duration exceeded 8 h, the risk of visual (OR, 1.09; 95% CI, 1.00–1.19; P = 0.048), hearing (OR, 1.04; 95% CI, 0.97–1.11; P = 0.269), and dual (OR, 1.07; 95% CI, 1.00–1.14; P = 0.044) impairments would increase facing prolonged sleep duration. Women and the elderly aged over 60 years old were more sensitive to short sleep duration and experienced a higher risk of sensory impairments. Conclusion In this study, short sleep duration was associated with a higher risk of visual and hearing impairments. Future studies are needed to examine the mechanisms of the associations between sleep duration and sensory impairments.

Abstract
Social determinants of health (SDOH) may be associated with subjective cognitive decline (SCD), which is a precursor for Alzheimer's disease. The main aims of the current study were to examine the association between SDOH and SCD; to determine if there is an indirect pathway among SDOH, depression, and SCD; and to examine the related gender and racial/ethnic disparities. Cross-sectional data were obtained from the 2017 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Survey (N = 6,509; 2,530 men and 3,978 women aged ≥45 years). Path analyses (stratified by gender and race) were used to determine the relationship between a SDOH index, depression, and SCD. After controlling for gender, age, income, education, employment, and other health-related behaviors, SDOH were positively associated with SCD among the overall population, men, and White populations. SDOH were associated with depression, and depression was associated with SCD among men, women, and White and Black populations. After adjustment for confounders, the indirect pathway among SDOH, depression, and SCD was statistically significant for men (β = 0.035, p < 0.001), women (β = 0.040, p < 0.001), White populations (β = 0.034, p < 0.001), and Black populations (β = 0.036, p = 0.026). Gender and racial/ethnic disparities existed in the relationship among SDOH, depression, and SCD. Future research should assess alternative mediational pathways between SDOH and SCD.
