Advances in agar-based composites: A comprehensive review

This review article explores the developments and applications in agar-based composites (ABCs), emphasizing various constituents such as metals, clay/ceramic, graphene, and polymers across diversified fields like wastewater treatment, drug delivery, food packaging, the energy sector, biomedical engineering, bioplastics, agriculture, and cosmetics. The focus is on agar as a sustainable and versatile biodegradable polysaccharide, highlighting research that has advanced the technology of ABCs. A bibliometric analysis is conducted using the Web of Science database, covering publications from January 2020 to March 2024, processed through VOSviewer Software Version 1.6.2. This analysis assesses evolving trends and scopes in the literature, visualizing co-words and themes that underscore the growing importance and potential of ABCs in various applications. This review paper contributes by showcasing the existing state-of-the-art knowledge and motivating further development in this promising field.

Antibacterial and Antitumoral Potentials of Phytosynthesized Silver/Silver Oxide Nanoparticles Using Tomato Flower Waste

This study presents the phytosynthesis of silver-based nanoparticles using tomato flower waste extracts for the first time in the literature. The determination of total polyphenolic and flavonoid contents in the extracts showed high gallic acid equivalents (6436-8802 mg GAE/kg dm) and high quercetin equivalents (378-633 mg QE/kg dm), respectively, dependent on the extraction method. By the Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography technique, 14 polyphenolic compounds were identified and quantified in the tomato flower waste extracts. The abundant phenolic compounds were caffeic acid (36,902-32,217 mg/kg) and chlorogenic acid (1640-1728 mg/kg), and the abundant flavonoid compounds were catechin (292-251 mg/kg) and luteolin (246-108 mg/kg). Transmission electron microscopy of the nanoparticles revealed a particle size range of 14-40 nm. Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction studies confirmed the phytosynthesis of the silver/silver oxide nanoparticles. These findings hold significant results for the antibacterial and antitumoral potential applications of the obtained nanoparticles, opening new areas for research and development and inspiring further exploration. The impact of this research on the field of metallic nanoparticle phytosynthesis is substantial, as it introduces a novel approach and could lead to significant advancements in the field.

Biological potential of Argyrolobium roseum (Camb.) Jaub & Spach mediated silver nanoparticles and their effect on the growth of wheat seeds

The green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using plant-based derivatives is getting attention for biological applications because of their small dimensions and shape. In this study, AgNPs were prepared using leaf extract of Argyrolobium roseum (A. roseum) (Camb.) Jaub. & Spach. and then characterized via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and ultraviolet-visible absorption (UV-Vis) spectroscopy. The UV-visible spectrum displayed a absorption peak at 450 nm and x-ray diffraction depicted a crystalline nature of biogenic NPs. FTIR analysis showed various functional groups involved in the reduction and capping of AgNPs while SEM revealed the spherical form of synthesized AgNPs. The antibacterial assay was conducted using disc diffusion assay and highest inhibition zones were recorded against Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis) (9.6 ± 0.5 mm) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) (8.6 ± 0.5 mm). The antioxidant potential was assessed via DPPH scavenging assay and highest percentage inhibition (89%) was observed at 100 μg/mL. Subsequently, different concentrations of A. roseum AgNPs were applied on the wheat seedlings to investigate its effects on different growth parameters. After applying AgNPs, significant increase in the fresh weight (FW), dry weight (DW), root length (RL), shoot length (SL), leaf number (LN) and chlorophyll content (CC) in wheat (Akbar-2019 variety) seedlings was observed in comparison to the control seedlings. Overall, A. roseum mediated synthesis of AgNPs was cost-effective and safe and can be used in agriculture, biomedical and other fields. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: Synthesis and characterization of A. roseum AgNPs was done. Biogenic AgNPs revealed potent antibacterial and antioxidant potential. A. roseum mediated AgNPs also increases the growth and germination of wheat seedlings.

Progress in food packaging applications of biopolymer-nanometal composites - A comprehensive review

Eco-friendly nanotechnology-enabled biopolymers are one of the novel concepts of packaging materials to substitute traditional synthetic polymers and their composites. This article succinctly reviews the recent developments of introducing additional functionalities to biopolymers using metal and metal oxide nanoparticles. The functionality of metal nanoparticles such as silver, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, copper oxide, gold, and magnesium oxide, as food packaging materials were discussed. The addition of nanoparticles in biopolymers improves mechanical properties, gas barrier properties, durability, temperature stability, moisture stability, antimicrobial activity, antioxidant property, and UV absorbance and can prevent the presence of ethylene and oxygen, hence extending the shelf life of foodstuffs. Other than this, the functional activity of these biopolymer composite films helps them to act like smart or intelligent packaging. The selection of metal nanoparticles, particle migration, toxicological effect, and potential future scope in the food packaging industry are also reviewed.

The antimicrobial effects of silver nanoparticles obtained through the royal jelly on the yeasts Candida guilliermondii NP-4

The effect of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) obtained in the presence of royal jelly (RJ) on the growth of yeast Candida guilliermondii NP-4, on the total and H+-ATPase activity, as well as lipid peroxidation process and antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase) activity was studied. It has been shown that RJ-mediated Ag NPs have a fungicide and fungistatic effects at the concentrations of 5.4 µg mL-1 and 27 µg mL-1, respectively. Under the influence of RJ-mediated Ag NPs, a decrease in total and H+-ATPase activity in yeast homogenates by ~ 90% and ~ 80% was observed, respectively. In yeast mitochondria total and H+-ATPase activity depression was detected by ~ 80% and ~ 90%, respectively. The amount of malondialdehyde in the Ag NPs exposed yeast homogenate increased ~ 60%, the catalase activity increased ~ 70%, and the SOD activity-~ 30%. The obtained data indicate that the use of RJ-mediated Ag NPs have a diverse range of influence on yeast cells. This approach may be important in the field of biomedical research aimed at evaluating the development of oxidative stress in cells. It may also contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of antimicrobial properties of RJ-mediated Ag NPs and help control the proliferation of pathogenic fungi.

Green Innovation and Synthesis of Honeybee Products-Mediated Nanoparticles: Potential Approaches and Wide Applications

Bee products, abundant in bioactive ingredients, have been utilized in both traditional and contemporary medicine. Their antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties make them valuable for food, preservation, and cosmetics applications. Honeybees are a vast reservoir of potentially beneficial products such as honey, bee pollen, bee bread, beeswax, bee venom, and royal jelly. These products are rich in metabolites vital to human health, including proteins, amino acids, peptides, enzymes, sugars, vitamins, polyphenols, flavonoids, and minerals. The advancement of nanotechnology has led to a continuous search for new natural sources that can facilitate the easy, low-cost, and eco-friendly synthesis of nanomaterials. Nanoparticles (NPs) are actively synthesized using honeybee products, which serve dual purposes in preventive and interceptive treatment strategies due to their richness in essential metabolites. This review aims to highlight the potential role of bee products in this line and their applications as catalysts and food preservatives and to point out their anticancer, antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant underlying impacts. The research used several online databases, namely Google Scholar, Science Direct, and Sci Finder. The overall findings suggest that these bee-derived substances exhibit remarkable properties, making them promising candidates for the economical and eco-friendly production of NPs.

Phytofabrication, characterization of silver nanoparticles using Hippophae rhamnoides berries extract and their biological activities

Introduction

Fabrication of plant-based metal nanoparticles has yielded promising results, establishing this approach as viable, sustainable, and non-toxic in the biomedical sector for targeted drug delivery, diagnostic imaging, biosensing, cancer therapy, and antimicrobial treatments.

Methods

The present work demonstrates the suitability of Hippophae rhamnoides berries for the instant green synthesis of silver nanoparticles to check their antioxidant, lipid peroxidation, and antimicrobial potential. The preliminary characterization of Hippophae rhamnoides-mediated AgNPs was validated by monitoring the color shift in the solution from pale yellow to reddish brown, which was further confirmed by UV-vis spectroscopy and the plasmon peaks were observed at 450 nm. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to evaluate the surface topography and structure of AgNPs. Herein, the antioxidant potential of synthesized AgNPs was investigated using DPPH free radical assay and the antimicrobial efficacy of similar was checked against E. coli and S. aureus by following MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) and MBC (Minimum bactericidal concentration) assay. Along with the inhibitory percentage of lipid peroxidation was analysed by following TBARS (Thiobarbituric acid reactive species) assay.

Results & discussion

The results revealed that the AgNPs were spherical in shape with an average size distribution within the range of 23.5-28 nm and a crystalline structure. Negative zeta potential (-19.7 mV) revealed the physical stability of synthesized AgNPs as the repulsive force to prevent immediate aggregation. The bioactive functional moieties involved in reducing bulk AgNO3 into AgNPs were further validated by FTIR. TBARS was adapted to test lipid peroxidation, and Hippophae rhamnoides-mediated AgNPs showed a 79% inhibition in lipid peroxidation compared to Hippophae rhamnoides berries extract as 65%. Furthermore, the antibacterial tests showed 37 ± 0.01 mm and 35 ± 0.0132 mm, zones of inhibition against E. coli MTCC 1698 and S. aureus MTCC 3160 with MIC and MBC values of 1 mg/mL, respectively.

Comparative Study of Physicochemical Properties and Antibacterial Potential of Cyanobacteria Spirulina platensis-Derived and Chemically Synthesized Silver Nanoparticles

The "green synthesis" of nanoparticles (NPs) offers cost-effective and environmentally friendly advantages over chemical synthesis by utilizing biological sources such as bacteria, algae, fungi, or plants. In this context, cyanobacteria and their components are valuable sources to produce various NPs. The present study describes the comparative analysis of physicochemical and antibacterial properties of chemically synthesized (Chem-AgNPs) and cyanobacteria Spirulina platensis-derived silver NPs (Splat-AgNPs). The physicochemical characterization applying complementary dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy revealed that Splat-AgNPs have an average hydrodynamic radius of ∼ 28.70 nm and spherical morphology, whereas Chem-AgNPs are irregular-shaped with an average radius size of ∼ 53.88 nm. The X-ray diffraction pattern of Splat-AgNPs confirms the formation of face-centered cubic crystalline AgNPs by "green synthesis". Energy-dispersive spectroscopy analysis demonstrated the purity of the Splat-AgNPs. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis of Splat-AgNPs demonstrated the involvement of some functional groups in the formation of NPs. Additionally, Splat-AgNPs demonstrated high colloidal stability with a zeta-potential value of (-50.0 ± 8.30) mV and a pronounced bactericidal activity against selected Gram-positive (Enterococcus hirae and Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative (Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella typhimurium) bacteria compared with Chem-AgNPs. Furthermore, our studies toward understanding the action mechanism of NPs showed that Splat-AgNPs alter the permeability of bacterial membranes and the energy-dependent H+-fluxes via FoF1-ATPase, thus playing a crucial role in bacterial energetics. The insights gained from this study show that Spirulina-derived synthesis is a low-cost, simple approach to producing stable AgNPs for their energy-metabolism-targeted antibacterial applications in biotechnology and biomedicine.

Exploring non-cytotoxic, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties of selenium nanoparticles synthesized from Gymnema sylvestre and Cinnamon cassia extracts for herbal nanomedicine

The increasing need for pharmaceutical agents that possess attributes such as safety, cost-effectiveness, environmental sustainability, and absence of side effects has driven the advancement of nanomedicine research, which lies at the convergence of nanotechnology and medicine.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The study aimed to synthesize non-toxic selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) using Gymnema sylvestre (G. sylvestre) and Cinnamon cassia (C. cassia) extracts. It also sought to develop and evaluate versatile nanomedicine formulations i.e. selenium nanoparticles of G. sylvestre and C. cassia (SeNPs), drug (lupeol) loaded SeNPs (DLSeNPs), drug-loaded and coated (PEG) SeNPs (DLCSeNPs) without side effects.

METHODS

The SeNPs formulations were hydrothermally synthesized, loaded with lupeol to improve efficacy, coated with polyethylene glycol (PEG) for targeted delivery, and characterized using UV-Vis spectrophotometry, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), zeta potential analysis, size distribution analysis, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Hemolytic cytotoxicity, 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydzayl (DPPH), total Reducing power, and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) antioxidant assays, carrageenan-induced paw edema, and histological studies were used to estimate the acute anti-inflammatory activity of the synthesized SeNPs.

RESULTS

The final form of PEGylated and drug (lupeol)-loaded selenium nanoparticles (DLCSeNPs) exhibited an average particle size ranging from 100 to 500 nm as evidenced by SEM, and Zeta potential results. These nanoparticles demonstrated no cytotoxic effects and displayed remarkable antioxidant (IC50 values 19.29) and anti-inflammatory capabilities. These results were fed into Graph-pad Prism 5 software and analyzed by one-way ANOVA, followed by Tukey's post hoc test (p < 0.001). All nano-formulations exhibited significant overall antioxidant activity, with IC50 values ≤ 386 (p < 0.05) as analyzed by ANOVA. The study's results suggest that G. sylvestre outperformed C. cassia in terms of reducing 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate (DPPH) free radical, potassium ferricyanide, and ammonium molybdate in respective antioxidant assays. As far as anti-inflammatory activities are concerned drug (lupeol)-loaded and PEG-coated G. sylvestre SeNPs exhibited the highest anti-inflammatory potential from all other nano-formulations including drug (lupeol)-loaded and PEG-coated C. cassia SeNPs, as exhibited to reduce the release of pro-inflammatory signals i.e. cytokines and NF-kB, making them innovative anti-inflammatory nanomedicine.

CONCLUSION

The study synthesized lupeol-loaded and PEG-coated SeNPs, showcasing the potential for biocompatible, cost-effective anti-inflammatory nanomedicines. G. Sylvester's superior antioxidant and anti-inflammatory performance than Cinnamon cassia emphasizes medicinal plant versatility.

Silver and Copper Nanoparticle-Loaded Self-Assembled Pseudo-Peptide Thiourea-Based Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Gel with Antibacterial and Superhydrophobic Properties for Antifouling Surfaces

The escalating threat of antimicrobial resistance has become a global health crisis. Therefore, there is a rising momentum in developing biomaterials with self-sanitizing capabilities and inherent antibacterial properties. Despite their promising antimicrobial properties, metal nanoparticles (MNPs) have several disadvantages, including increased toxicity as the particle size decreases, leading to oxidative stress and DNA damage that need consideration. One solution is surface functionalization with biocompatible organic ligands, which can improve nanoparticle dispersibility, reduce aggregation, and enable targeted delivery to microbial cells. The existing research predominantly concentrates on the advancement of peptide-based hydrogels for coating materials to prevent bacterial infection, with limited exploration of developing surface coatings using organogels. Herein, we have synthesized organogel-based coatings doped with MNPs that can offer superior hydrophobicity, oleophobicity, and high stability that are not easily achievable with hydrogels. The self-assembled gels displayed distinct morphologies, as revealed by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. The cross-linked matrix helps in the controlled and sustained release of MNPs at the site of bacterial infection. The synthesized self-assembled gel@MNPs exhibited excellent antibacterial properties against harmful bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus and reduced bacterial viability up to 95% within 4 h. Cytotoxicity testing against metazoan cells demonstrated that the gels doped with MNPs were nontoxic (IC50 > 100 μM) to mammalian cells. Furthermore, in this study, we coated the organogel@MNPs on cotton fabric and tested it against Gram +ve and Gram -ve bacteria. Additionally, the developed cotton fabric exhibited superhydrophobic properties and developed a barrier that limits the interaction between bacteria and the surface, making it difficult for bacteria to adhere and colonize, which holds potential as a valuable resource for self-cleaning coatings.

Bee pollen as a food and feed supplement and a therapeutic remedy: recent trends in nanotechnology

Pollen grains are the male reproductive part of the flowering plants. It is collected by forager honey bees and mixed with their salivary secretions, enzymes, and nectar, which form fermented pollen or "bee bread" which is stored in cells of wax honeycombs. Bee pollen (BP) is a valuable apitherapeutic product and is considered a nutritional healthy food appreciated by natural medicine from ancient times. Recently, BP has been considered a beneficial food supplement and a value-added product that contains approximately 250 different bioactive components. It contains numerous beneficial elements such as Mg, Ca, Mn, K, and phenolic compounds. BP possesses strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiviral, analgesic, immunostimulant, neuroprotective, anti-cancer, and hepatoprotective properties. It is used for different purposes for the welfare of mankind. Additionally, there is a growing interest in honey bee products harvesting and utilizing for many purposes as a natural remedy and nutritive function. In this review, the impacts of BP on different organisms in different ways by highlighting its apitherapeutic efficacy are described.

Synergistic effect of Silver-Nanodiamond composite as an efficient antibacterial agent against E. coli and S. aureus

Bacterial antimicrobial resistance (BAMR) seems to pose the greatest threat to public health, food safety, and agriculture in this century. The development of novel efficient antimicrobial agents to combat bacterial infections has become a global issue. Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) appeared as a feasible alternative to antibiotics. However, Ag NPs face cost, toxicity, and aggregation issues which limit their antibacterial activity. This work aims to stabilize Ag NPs with enhanced antimicrobial activity at comparatively lower Ag concentrations to prevent bacterial infections. For this purpose, the Ag core was covered with nanodiamonds (NDs). Ag-NDs composite have been synthesized by microplasma technique. TEM analysis confirmed the presence of both Ag and NDs in the Ag-NDs composite. A particle size (∼19 nm) was reported for Ag-NDs at the highest concentration as compared to Ag NPs (∼3 nm). The conduction band of the diamond acted as an extremely strong reducing agent for Ag NPs. The large surface area of NDs stabilized the Ag NPs. A redshift (∼400 nm-406 nm) in UV-visible spectra of the Ag-NDs composite indicated the formation of bigger-sized Ag NPs after incorporating NDs. XRD and LIBS analysis verified the increase in intensity of Ag-NPs by increasing ND concentration. The presence of functional groups including OH, CH, and Ag/Ag2O was confirmed by FTIR. Bacterial inhibition growth appeared to be a dose-dependent process. The minimum inhibition concentration value of Ag-NDs composite at the highest NDs concentration against E. coli (∼ 0.69 μg/ml) and S. aureus (∼44 μg/ml). This is the first study to report the smallest MIC for E. coli (<1 μg/ml). Ag-ND composites emerged to be more efficient than Ag NPs and preferred to be used against BAMR. The enhanced antibacterial activity of the Ag-NDs composite makes it a potential candidate for antibiotics, food products, and pesticides.

Research progress on antibacterial applications of metal-organic frameworks and their biomacromolecule composites

With the extensive use of antibiotics, resulting in increasingly serious problems of bacterial resistance, antimicrobial therapy has become a global concern. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are low-density porous coordination materials composed of metal ions and organic ligands, which can form composite materials with biomacromolecules such as proteins and polysaccharides. In recent years, MOFs and their derivatives have been widely used in the antibacterial field as efficient antibacterial agents. This review offers a detailed summary of the antibacterial applications of MOFs and their composites, and the different synthesis methods and antibacterial mechanisms of MOFs and MOF-based composites are briefly introduced. Finally, the challenges and prospects of MOFs-based antibacterial materials in the rapidly developing medical field were briefly discussed. We hope this review will provide new strategies for the medical application of MOFs-based antibacterial materials.

Characterization, antibacterial, and cytotoxic activities of silver nanoparticles using the whole biofilm layer as a macromolecule in biosynthesis

Recently, multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacteria are responsible for a large number of infectious diseases that can be life-threatening. Globally, new approaches are targeted to solve this essential issue. This study aims to discover novel antibiotic alternatives by using the whole components of the biofilm layer as a macromolecule to synthesize silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as a promising agent against MDR. In particular, the biosynthesized biofilm-AgNPs were characterized using UV-Vis spectroscopy, electron microscopes, Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), zeta sizer and potential while their effect on bacterial strains and normal cell lines was identified. Accordingly, biofilm-AgNPs have a lavender-colored solution, spherical shape, with a size range of 20-60 nm. Notably, they have inhibitory effects when used on various bacterial strains with concentrations ranging between 12.5 and 25 µg/mL. In addition, they have an effective synergistic effect when combined with phage ZCSE9 to inhibit and kill Salmonella enterica with a concentration of 3.1 µg/mL. In conclusion, this work presents a novel biosynthesis preparation of AgNPs using biofilm for antibacterial purposes to reduce the possible toxicity by reducing the MICs using phage ZCSE9.

Multifunctional gold nanoparticles for osteoporosis: synthesis, mechanism and therapeutic applications

Osteoporosis is currently the most prevalent bone disorder worldwide and is characterized by low bone mineral density and an overall increased risk of fractures. To treat osteoporosis, a range of drugs targeting bone homeostasis have emerged in clinical practice, including anti-osteoclast agents such as bisphosphonates and denosumab, bone formation stimulating agents such as teriparatide, and selective oestrogen receptor modulators. However, traditional clinical medicine still faces challenges related to side effects and high costs of these types of treatments. Nanomaterials (particularly gold nanoparticles [AuNPs]), which have unique optical properties and excellent biocompatibility, have gained attention in the field of osteoporosis research. AuNPs have been found to promote osteoblast differentiation, inhibit osteoclast formation, and block the differentiation of adipose-derived stem cells, which thus is believed to be a novel and promising candidate for osteoporosis treatment. This review summarizes the advances and drawbacks of AuNPs in their synthesis and the mechanisms in bone formation and resorption in vitro and in vivo, with a focus on their size, shape, and chemical composition as relevant parameters for the treatment of osteoporosis. Additionally, several important and promising directions for future studies are also discussed, which is of great significance for prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.

Recent advances in nanoantibiotics against multidrug-resistant bacteria

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria-caused infections have been a major threat to human health. The abuse of conventional antibiotics accelerates the generation of MDR bacteria and makes the situation worse. The emergence of nanomaterials holds great promise for solving this tricky problem due to their multiple antibacterial mechanisms, tunable antibacterial spectra, and low probabilities of inducing drug resistance. In this review, we summarize the mechanism of the generation of drug resistance, and introduce the recently developed nanomaterials for dealing with MDR bacteria via various antibacterial mechanisms. Considering that biosafety and mass production are the major bottlenecks hurdling the commercialization of nanoantibiotics, we introduce the related development in these two aspects. We discuss urgent challenges in this field and future perspectives to promote the development and translation of nanoantibiotics as alternatives against MDR pathogens to traditional antibiotics-based approaches.

Photothermal Conversion Efficiency of Silver and Gold Incorporated Nanosized Apatites for Biomedical Applications

The aim of this research was to investigate the photothermal ability of nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite (nHAp) incorporated with silver and gold. It was studied by using a recently developed technique evaluating the photothermal conversion efficiency. The heating performance of aqueous dispersions was examined under 445 and 532 nm excitation. The largest increase in temperature was found for the 2% Ag-nHAp and reached above 2 °C per mg/mL of sample (445 nm) under 90 mW laser continuous irradiation and an external light-to-heat conversion efficiency of 0.11 L/g cm. The obtained results have shown a new functionality of nanosized apatites that has not been considered before. The studied materials have also been characterized by XRPD, TEM, BET, and UV-Vis techniques. Finally, in this work, a new idea for their application was proposed: photothermal therapy.

Photocatalytic Organic Contaminant Degradation of Green Synthesized ZrO2 NPs and Their Antibacterial Activities

The green synthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles is an efficient, simple, and chemical-free method of producing nanoparticles. The present work reports the synthesis of Murraya koenigii-mediated ZrO2 nanoparticles (ZrO2 NPs) and their applications as a photocatalyst and antibacterial agent. Capping and stabilization of metal oxide nanoparticles were achieved by using Murraya koenigii leaf extract. The optical, structural, and morphological valance of the ZrO2 NPs were characterized using UV-DRS, FTIR, XRD, and FESEM with EDX, TEM, and XPS. An XRD analysis determined that ZrO2 NPs have a monoclinic structure and a crystallite size of 24 nm. TEM and FESEM morphological images confirm the spherical nature of ZrO2 NPs, and their distributions on surfaces show lower agglomerations. ZrO2 NPs showed high optical absorbance in the UV region and a wide bandgap indicating surface oxygen vacancies and charge carriers. The presence of Zr and O elements and their O=Zr=O bonds was categorized using EDX and FTIR spectroscopy. The plant molecules’ interface, bonding, binding energy, and their existence on the surface of ZrO2 NPs were established from XPS analysis. The photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue using ZrO2 NPs was examined under visible light irradiation. The 94% degradation of toxic MB dye was achieved within 20 min. The antibacterial inhibition of ZrO2 NPs was tested against S. aureus and E. coli pathogens. Applications of bio-synthesized ZrO2 NPs including organic substance removal, pathogenic inhibitor development, catalysis, optical, and biomedical development were explored.

Green synthesis and characterization of silver nanoparticles for reducing the damage to sperm parameters in diabetic compared to metformin

The present study used physics to synthesize silver nanoparticles using aqueous extract of fresh garlic as reducing and as a stabilizing agent silver nitrate solution. This method has proven to be environmentally friendly and safe for the synthesis of stable silver nanoparticles. The acquisition of silver nanoparticles was confirmed by optical detection, that is, by changing the color of the liquid to transparent orange and then blackish brown. Then, the characterization was confirmed using other assays. In this study, it was found that the absorption peak of silver nanoparticles was at a wavelength of 420 nm and the particle size ranged between [50-350] nm. The surface roughness of silver oxide/silver nanoparticles was 9.32 nm with an average square roughness of 21.19 nm, and the energy dispersive spectra showed that the absorption peak was in the region of 3 keV, indicating that the nanoparticles contained crystalline silver. In this study, the stability of the silver nanoparticles was good, as ZP reached (- 19.5). The results confirm that the conductivity increases with the increase in frequency due to the high energy of the photons, which causes the electrons to vibrate in the energy levels and thus increase the energy in the mitochondria and increase the movement of sperm in the Diabetic mice treated with doses of silver nanoparticles. The toxic effect of silver nanoparticles has been evaluated in other studies, in addition to evaluating antioxidants, antifungals, treating cancer cells, regulating cholesterol levels, the effect of these nanoparticles on sex cells in pregnant female mice, heart tension, and many other tests. In this study, the activities and efficacy of silver nanoparticles on sperms were determined in male mice with diabetes caused by STZ, and the treatment period was long (35 days) so that the evaluation period was a complete life cycle of male sex cells and within a long period of time and at an average nano size. This has not been studied in other previous studies. The results indicate that the biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles using garlic plant led to positive results on sperm treatments by contributing to an increase in the number of sperm with reactivation and a decrease in abnormalities in addition to a decrease in mortality due to diabetes. This is evidence that the synthesis of silver nanoparticles using garlic plant size (50-350 nm) can treat impotence and be used in the future in the treatment of many diseases without side effects.

The antimicrobial, antibiofilm, and wound healing properties of ethyl acetate crude extract of an endophytic fungus Paecilomyces sp. (AUMC 15510) in earthworm model

The endophytic fungus Paecilomyces sp. (AUMC 15510) was isolated from healthy stem samples of the Egyptian medicinal plant Cornulaca monacantha. We used GC-MS and HPLC analysis to identify the bioactive constituents of ethyl acetate crude extract of Paecilomyces sp. (PsEAE). Six human microbial pathogens have been selected to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of PsEAE. Our data showed that the extract has significant antimicrobial activity against all tested pathogens. However, the best inhibitory effect was observed against Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 90274 with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 3.9 μg/ml and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of 15.6 μg/ml, for both pathogens. Also, PsEAE exerts a significant inhibition on the biofilm formation of the previously mentioned pathogenic strains. In addition, we evaluated the wound healing efficiency of PsEAE on earthworms (Lumbricus castaneus) as a feasible and plausible model that mimics human skin. Interestingly, PsEAE exhibited a promising wound healing activity and enhanced wound closure. In conclusion, Paecilomyces sp. (AUMC 15510) could be a sustainable source of antimicrobial agents and a potential therapeutic target for wound management.
