The role of ruthenium in improving the kinetics of hydrogen oxidation and evolution reactions of platinum

Engineering antibonding orbital occupancy of NiMoO4-supported Ru nanoparticles for enhanced chlorine evolution reaction

Chlorine evolution reaction (CER) is crucial for industrial-scale production of high-purity Cl2. Despite the development of classical dimensionally stable anodes to enhance CER efficiency, the competitive oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains a barrier to achieving high Cl2 selectivity. Herein, a binder-free electrode, Ru nanoparticles (NPs)-decorated NiMoO4 nanorod arrays (NRAs) supported on Ti foam (Ru-NiMoO4/Ti), was designed for active CER in saturated NaCl solution (pH = 2). The Ru-NiMoO4/Ti electrode exhibits a low overpotential of 20 mV at 10 mA cm-2 current density, a high Cl2 selectivity exceeding 90%, and robust durability for 90h operation. The marked difference in Tafel slopes between CER and OER indicates the high Cl2 selectivity and superior reaction kinetics of Ru-NiMoO4/Ti electrode. Further studies reveal a strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) between Ru and NiMoO4, facilitating electron transfer through the Ru-O bridge bond and increasing the Ru 3d-Cl 2p antibonding orbital occupancy, which eventually results in weakened Ru-Cl bonding, promoted Cl desorption, and enhanced Cl2 evolution. Our findings provide new insights into developing electrodes with enhanced CER performance through antibonding orbital occupancy engineering.

Revealing the heterogeneous catalytic kinetics of PtRu nanocatalysts at the single particle level

Comparison of the structural features and catalytic performance of bimetallic nanocatalysts will help to develop a unified understanding of structure-reaction relationships. The single-molecule fluorescence technique was utilized to reveal the differences in catalytic kinetics among PtRu bimetallic nanocatalysts and Pt and Ru monometallic nanocatalysts at the single particle level. The results show that bimetallic nanocatalysts have higher apparent rate constants and desorption rate constants relative to monometallic nanocatalysts, which leads to their higher catalytic activity. At the single particle level, bimetallic nanocatalysts have a wider distribution of apparent rate constants, suggesting that bimetallic nanocatalysts have higher activity heterogeneity relative to monometallic nanocatalysts. By investigating the relationship between the reaction rate and the rate of dynamic activity fluctuations, it was found that spontaneous surface restructuring and reaction-induced surface restructuring of nanoparticles occurred. The surface of bimetallic nanoparticles restructured faster, which made the bimetallic nanocatalysts more active. These findings provide new insights into the design of highly active bimetallic nanocatalysts.

Disentangling heterogeneous thermocatalytic formic acid dehydrogenation from an electrochemical perspective

Heterogeneous thermocatalysis of formic acid dehydrogenation by metals in solution is of great importance for chemical storage and production of hydrogen. Insightful understanding of the complicated formic acid dehydrogenation kinetics at the metal-solution interface is challenging and yet essential for the design of efficient heterogeneous formic acid dehydrogenation systems. In this work, formic acid dehydrogenation kinetics is initially studied from a perspective of electrochemistry by decoupling this reaction on Pd catalyst into two short-circuit half reactions, formic acid oxidation reaction and hydrogen evolution reaction and manipulating the electrical double layer impact from the solution side. The pH-dependences of formic acid dehydrogenation kinetics and the associated cation effect are attributed to the induced change of electric double layer structure and potential by means of electrochemical measurements involving kinetic isotope effect, in situ infrared spectroscopy as well as grand canonical quantum mechanics calculations. This work showcases how kinetic puzzles on some important heterogeneous catalytic reactions can be tackled by electrochemical theories and methodologies.

Towards bridging thermo/electrocatalytic CO oxidation: from nanoparticles to single atoms

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), as a feasible alternative to replace the traditional fossil fuel-based energy converter, contribute significantly to the global sustainability agenda. At the PEMFC anode, given the high exchange current density, Pt/C is deemed the catalyst-of-choice to ensure that the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) occurs at a sufficiently fast pace. The high performance of Pt/C, however, can only be achieved under the premise that high purity hydrogen is used. For instance, in the presence of trace level carbon monoxide, a typical contaminant during H2 production, Pt is severely deactivated by CO surface blockage. Addressing the poisoning issue necessitates for either developing anti-poisoning electrocatalysts or using pre-purified H2 obtained via a thermo-catalysis route. In other words, the CO poisoning issue can be addressed by either thermal-catalysis from the H2 supply side or electrocatalysis at the user side, respectively. In spite of the distinction between thermo-catalysis and electro-catalysis, there are high similarities between the two routes. Essentially, a reduction in the kinetic barrier for the combination of CO to oxygen containing intermediates is required in both techniques. Therefore, bridging electrocatalysis and thermocatalysis might offer new insight into the development of cutting edge catalysts to solve the poisoning issue, which, however, stands as an underexplored frontier in catalysis science. This review provides a critical appraisal of the recent advancements in preferential CO oxidation (CO-PROX) thermocatalysts and anti-poisoning HOR electrocatalysts, aiming to bridge the gap in cognition between the two routes. First, we discuss the differences in thermal/electrocatalysis, CO oxidation mechanisms, and anti-CO poisoning strategies. Second, we comprehensively summarize the progress of supported and unsupported CO-tolerant catalysts based on the timeline of development (nanoparticles to clusters to single atoms), focusing on metal-support interactions and interface reactivity. Third, we elucidate the stability issue and theoretical understanding of CO-tolerant electrocatalysts, which are critical factors for the rational design of high-performance catalysts. Finally, we underscore the imminent challenges in bridging thermal/electrocatalytic CO oxidation, with theory, materials, and the mechanism as the three main weapons to gain a more in-depth understanding. We anticipate that this review will contribute to the cognition of both thermocatalysis and electrocatalysis.

Interfacial engineering of ruthenium-nickel for efficient hydrogen electrocatalysis in alkaline medium

Developing highly efficient electrocatalyst with heterostructure for hydrogen evolution and oxidation reactions (HER/HOR) in alkaline media is crucial to the fabrication and conversion of hydrogen energy but also remains a great challenge. Herein, the synthesis of ruthenium-nickel nanoparticles (Ru3-Ni NPs) with heterostructure for hydrogen electrocatalysis is reported, and studies show that their catalytic activity is improved by electron redistribution caused by the distinctly heterogeneous interface. Impressively, Ru3-Ni NPs possess the remarkable exchange current density (2.22 mA cm-2) for HOR. Additionally, an ultra-low overpotential of 28 mV is required to attain a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and superior stability of 200 h for HER. The highly efficient catalytic activity can be attributed to the electron transfer from Ni to Ru and the optimal adsorption of H* on Ru-Ni sites. Our study showcases a reliable heterostructure that boosts the HOR/HER activity of the catalyst in alkaline environments. This work provides a new pathway for designing high-performance electrocatalyst for energy storage and conversion.

Platinum monolayer dispersed on MXenes for electrocatalyzed hydrogen evolution: a first-principles study

Maximizing platinum's atomic utilization and understanding the anchoring mechanism between platinum moieties and their supports are crucial for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Using density functional theory, we investigate the catalyst of a Pt monolayer on the two-dimensional Mo2TiC2 substrate (PtML/Mo2TiC2) for the reaction. This Pt monolayer shows a Pt(111)-like pattern, with its Pt-Pt bond elongated by about 0.1 Å compared to Pt(111); charge transfer from Mo2TiC2 to the Pt monolayer leads to significant charge accumulation on Pt. This substantial monolayer metal-support interaction optimizes hydrogen adsorption toward optimal HER activity under both constant charge and potential conditions, making PtML/Mo2TiC2 a promising HER catalyst. Detailed studies reveal that the dominant Volmer-Tafel mechanism in the HER occurs on the 1 monolayer hydrogen-covered PtML/Mo2TiC2 surface. The surface Pourbaix diagram identifies this as the stable surface termination under the electrochemical reaction conditions. These findings provide insights into designing stable, efficient, and low platinum-loaded HER catalysts.

Integrated doped-Ru electrocatalyst with excellent H adsorption-desorption and active site on hollow tubular structures for boosting efficient hydrogen evolution

Electrochemical water splitting for hydrogen production is an ideal process for clean energy production. However, highly active and low-cost electrocatalysts are essential and challenging. In this work, a multi-component Cu-based catalyst (Ru-M-C-Cu), synergized with ruthenium (Ru) heteroatom doping, was synthesized via a facile immersion-calcination-immersion method. Based on the cotton biomass substrate, a hollow tubular structure was obtained. By virtue of its distinctive structure and high carbon content, cotton biomass assumed a dual role as a sacrificial template and a reducing agent in the eco-friendly synthesis of electrocatalysts, which was instrumental in the creation of a multi-component system augmented by heteroatom doping. The multi-component system was constructed by in-situ transformation and redox reaction during calcination in an oxygen-free environment. The Ru-M-C-Cu catalyst exhibited a competitive overpotential of 108 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The satisfactory catalytic performance of Ru-M-C-Cu can be attributed to the fact that the Ru-O-Cu catalytic centers enhanced the adsorption and desorption abilities of the Cu-O active sites toward hydrogen. Furthermore, the hollow tubular structure allowed the electrolyte to make full contact with the active sites of the Ru-M-C-Cu catalyst, thus accelerated the HER kinetics. The catalyst showed structural and chemical stability after a 12-hour successive test. Besides, the production cost of Ru-M-C-Cu was significantly reduced by 99.1 % than that of commercial 20 % Pt/C, showing the potential as an alternative catalyst by offering a more accessible and sustainable source. This work provides a new design of sustainable low-budget electrocatalysts with the proposed strategies expected for producing clean and renewable hydrogen energy.

General synthesis of high-entropy single-atom nanocages for electrosynthesis of ammonia from nitrate

Given the growing emphasis on energy efficiency, environmental sustainability, and agricultural demand, there's a pressing need for decentralized and scalable ammonia production. Converting nitrate ions electrochemically, which are commonly found in industrial wastewater and polluted groundwater, into ammonia offers a viable approach for both wastewater treatment and ammonia production yet limited by low producibility and scalability. Here we report a versatile and scalable solution-phase synthesis of high-entropy single-atom nanocages (HESA NCs) in which Fe and other five metals-Co, Cu, Zn, Cd, and In-are isolated via cyano-bridges and coordinated with C and N, respectively. Incorporating and isolating the five metals into the matrix of Fe resulted in Fe-C5 active sites with a minimized symmetry of lattice as well as facilitated water dissociation and thus hydrogenation process. As a result, the Fe-HESA NCs exhibited a high selectivity toward NH3 from the electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate with a Faradaic efficiency of 93.4% while maintaining a high yield rate of 81.4 mg h-1 mg-1.

Semimetal-triggered covalent interaction in Pt-based intermetallics for fuel-cell electrocatalysis

Platinum-based intermetallic compounds (IMCs) play a vital role as electrocatalysts in a range of energy and environmental technologies, such as proton exchange membrane fuel cells. However, the synthesis of IMCs necessitates recombination of ordered Pt-M metallic bonds with high temperature driving, which is generally accompanied by side effects for catalysts' structure and performance. In this work, we highlight that semimetal atoms can trigger covalent interactions to break the synthesis-temperature limitation of platinum-based intermetallic compounds and benefit fuel-cell electrocatalysis. Attributed to partial fillings of p-block in semimetal elements, the strong covalent interaction of d-p π backbonding can benefit the recombination of ordered Pt-M metallic bonds (PtGe, PtSb and PtTe) in the synthesis process. Moreover, this covalent interaction in metallic states can further promote both electron transport and orbital fillings of active sites in fuel cells. The semimetal-Pt IMCs were obtained with a temperature 300 K lower than that needed for the synthesis of metal-Pt intermetallic compounds and reached the highest CO-tolerant oxygen reduction activity (0.794 A mg-1 at 0.9 V and 5.1% decay under CO poisoning) among reported electrocatalysts. We anticipate that semimetal-Pt IMCs will offer new insights for the rational design of advanced electrocatalysts for fuel cells.

Symmetry Evolution Induced 2D Pt Single Atom Catalyst with High Density for Alkaline Hydrogen Oxidation

The performance of single-atom catalysts is greatly influenced by the chemical environment surrounding the central atom. Here, a salt-assisted method is employed to transform the tetrahedral coordination structure of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks - 8 (ZIF-8) into a planar square coordination structure without altering the ligands. During the subsequent carbonization process, concurrent with the evaporation of zinc atoms, the structure of the nitrogen and carbon carriers (NC carriers) undergoes a transition from five-membered rings to six-membered rings to preserve the 2D structure. This transition results in the generation of additional defect sites on the 2D-NC substrates. Hence, the Pt single-atom catalysts with planar square coordination symmetries can be precisely prepared via electrodeposition (denoted as 2D-Pt SAC). The Pt loading of 2D-Pt SAC is 0.49 ± 0.03 µg cm-2, higher than that of 3D-Pt SAC (0.37 ± 0.04 µg cm-2). In the context of the hydrogen oxidation reaction electrocatalysis, under an overpotential of 50 mV, these single-atom catalysts with 2D coordination exhibit mass activities of 2396 A gPt -1 (32 times higher than commercial Pt/C catalyst, 2 times higher than 3D-PtNC).

Thermocatalytic Hydrogen Production from Water at Boiling Condition

Thermochemical water-splitting cycles are technically feasible for hydrogen production from water. However, the ultrahigh operation temperature and low efficiency seriously restrict their practical application. Herein, one-step and one-pot thermocatalytic water-splitting process is reported at water boiling condition catalyzed by single atomic Pt on defective In2O3. Water splitting into hydrogen is verified by D2O isotopic experiment, with an optimized hydrogen production rate of 36.4 mmol·h-1·g-1 as calculated on Pt active sites. It is revealed that three-centered Pt1In2 surrounding oxygen vacancy as catalytic ensembles promote the dissociation of the adsorbed water into H, which transfers to singlet atomic Pt sites for H2 production. Remaining OH groups on adjacent In sites from Pt1In2 ensembles undergoes O─O bonding, hyperoxide formation and diminishing via triethylamine oxidation, water re-adsorption for completing the catalytic cycle. Current work represents an isothermal and continuous thermocatalytic water splitting under mild condition, which can re-awaken the research interest to produce H2 from water using low-grade heat and competes with photocatalytic, electrolytic, and photoelectric reactions.

Tailoring competitive adsorption sites of hydroxide ion to enhance urea oxidation-assisted hydrogen production

Alloys with bimetallic electron modulation effect are promising catalysts for the electrooxidation of urea. However, the side reaction oxygen evolution reaction (OER) originating from the competitive adsorption of OH- and urea severely limited the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) activity on the alloy catalysts. This work successfully constructs the defect-rich NiCo alloy with lattice strain (PMo-NiCo/NF) by rapid pyrolysis and co-doping. By taking advantage of the compressive strain, the d-band center of NiCo is shifted downward, inhibiting OH- from adsorbing on the NiCo site and avoiding the detrimental OER. Meanwhile, the oxygenophilic P/Mo tailored specific adsorption sites to adsorb OH- preferentially, which further released the NiCo sites to ensure the enriched adsorption of urea, thus improving the UOR efficiency. As a result, PMo-NiCo/NF only requires 1.27 V and -57 mV to drive a current density of ±10 mA cm-2 for UOR and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), respectively. With the guidance of this work, reactant competing adsorption sites could be tailored for effective electrocatalytic performance.

Island-in-Sea Structured Pt3Fe Nanoparticles-in-Fe Single Atoms Loaded in Carbon Materials as Superior Electrocatalysts toward Alkaline HER and Acidic ORR

In this work, Pt3Fe nanoparticles (Pt3Fe NPs) with the ordered internal structure and Pt-rich shells surrounded by plenty of Fe single atoms (Fe SAs) as active species (Pt3Fe NP-in-Fe SA) loaded in the carbon materials are successfully fabricated, which are abbreviated as island-in-sea structured (IISS) Pt3Fe NP-in-Fe SA catalysts. Moreover, the synergistic effect of O-bridging between Pt3Fe NPs and Fe SAs, and the ordered internal structured Pt3Fe NPs with Pt-rich shells of an optimal thickness contributes to the achievement of the local acidic environments on the surfaces of Pt3Fe NPs in the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the enhancement of the desorption rate of *OH intermediate in the acidic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In addition, the electronic interactions between Pt3Fe NPs and dispersed Fe SAs cannot only provide efficient electrons transfer, but also prevent the aggregation and dissolution of Pt3Fe NPs. Furthermore, the overpotential and the half wave potential of the as-prepared IISS Pt3Fe NP-in-Fe SA catalysts toward the alkaline HER and toward the acidic ORR are 8 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and 0.933 V, respectively, which is 29 lower and 86 mV higher than those (37 mV and 0.847 V) of commercial Pt/C catalysts.

Sub-2 nm Microstrained High-Entropy-Alloy Nanoparticles Boost Hydrogen Electrocatalysis

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) confine multifarious elements into the same lattice, leading to intense lattice distortion effect. The lattice distortion tends to induce local microstrain at atomic level and thus affect surface adsorptions toward different adsorbates in various electrocatalytic reactions, yet remains unexplored. Herein, this work reports a class of sub-2 nm IrRuRhMoW HEA nanoparticles (NPs) with distinct local microstrain induced by lattice distortion for boosting alkaline hydrogen oxidation (HOR) and evolution reactions (HER). This work demonstrates that the distortion-rich HEA catalysts with optimized electronic structure can downshift the d-band center and generate uncoordinated oxygen sites to enhance the surface oxophilicity. As a result, the IrRuRhMoW HEA NPs show a remarkable HOR kinetic current density of 8.09 mA µg-1 PGM at 50 mV versus RHE, 8.89, 22.47 times higher than those of IrRuRh NPs without internal strain and commercial Pt/C, respectively, which is the best value among all the reported non-Pt based catalysts. IrRuRhMoW HEA NPs also display great HER performances with a turnover frequency (TOF) value of 5.93 H2 s-1 at 70 mV versus RHE, 4.6-fold higher than that of Pt/C catalyst, exceeding most noble metal-based catalysts. Experimental characterizations and theoretical studies collectively confirm that weakened hydrogen (Had) and enhanced hydroxyl (OHad) adsorption are achieved by simultaneously modulating the hydrogen adsorption binding energy and surface oxophilicity originated from intensified ligand effect and microstrain effect over IrRuRhMoW HEA NPs, which guarantees the remarkable performances toward HOR/HER.

Immobilizing Ordered Oxophilic Indium Sites on Platinum Enabling Efficient Hydrogen Oxidation in Alkaline Electrolyte

Addressing the sluggish kinetics in the alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) is a pivotal yet challenging step toward the commercialization of anion-exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). Here, we have successfully immobilized indium (In) atoms in an orderly fashion into platinum (Pt) nanoparticles supported by reduced graphene oxide (denoted as O-Pt3In/rGO), significantly enhancing alkaline HOR kinetics. We have revealed that the ordered atomic matrix enables uniform and optimized hydrogen binding energy (HBE), hydroxyl binding energy (OHBE), and carbon monoxide binding energy (COBE) across the catalyst. With a mass activity of 2.3066 A mg-1 at an overpotential of 50 mV, over 10 times greater than that of Pt/C, the catalyst also demonstrates admirable CO resistance and stability. Importantly, the AEMFC implementing this catalyst as the anode catalyst has achieved an impressive power output compared to Pt/C. This work not only highlights the significance of constructing ordered oxophilic sites for alkaline HOR but also sheds light on the design of well-structured catalysts for energy conversion.

Tailored Design of Mesoporous Nanospheres with High Entropic Alloy Sites for Efficient Redox Electrocatalysis

High Entropy Alloys (HEAs) are a versatile material with unique properties, tailored for various applications. They enable pH-sensitive electrocatalytic transformations like hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and hydrogen oxidation reactions (HOR) in alkaline media. Mesoporous nanostructures with high surface area are preferred for these electrochemical reactions, but designing mesoporous HEA sis challenging. To overcome this challenge, a low-temperature triblock copolymer-assisted wet-chemical approach is developed to produce mesoporous HEA nanospheres composed of PtPdRuMoNi systems with sufficient entropic mixing. Owing to active sites with inherent entropic effect, mesoporous features, and increased accessibility, optimized HEA nanospheres promote strong HER/HOR performance in alkaline medium. At 30 mV nominal overpotential, it exhibits a mass activity of ≈167 (HER) and 151 A gPt -1 (HOR), far exceeding commercial Pt-C electrocatalysts (34 and 48 A gPt -1) and many recently reported various alloys. The Mott-Schottky analysis reveals HEA nanospheres inherit high charge carrier density, positive flat band potential, and smaller charge transfer barrier, resulting in better activity and faster kinetics. This micelle-assisted synthetic enable the exploration of the compositional and configurational spaces of HEAs at relatively low temperature, while simultaneously facilitating the introduction of mesoporous nanostructures for a wide range of catalytic applications.

Competitive Valerate Binding Enables RuO2-Mediated Butene Electrosynthesis in Water

The (non)-Kolbe oxidation of valeric acid, sourced from a hydrolysis product of cellulose, provides a sustainable synthetic route to access value-added products, such as butene. An essential mechanistic step preceding product formation involves the oxidative and decarboxylative cleavage of a C-C bond. Yet, the role of the electrode surface in mediating this oxidative step remains an open question: the electron transfer can occur either via an inner-sphere or outer-sphere mechanism. Here, we report the electrochemical, in situ spectroscopic, computational, and reactivity studies of RuO2-mediated oxidative decarboxylation of valeric acid to butene in aqueous electrolytes. We find that carboxylates bind to RuO2 anode surfaces at potential values where decarboxylation products are observed. Our results are consistent with a reaction scheme where the competitive and catalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is impeded by these bound carboxylate species while these species are inert toward butene formation. Our results implicate an outer-sphere electron transfer mechanism for decarboxylation where the surface chemistry of the RuO2 electrode serves to enable higher non-Kolbe reaction selectivity by suppressing the parasitic OER. Our findings delineate interfacial design principles for selective electrochemical systems that utilize water as the ultimate oxidant for sustainable decarboxylation.

Zeolite-Templated Carbons Supported Rh and Ru Electrocatalysts for Highly Active Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Here, we report the systematical synthesis of zeolite-templated carbon (ZTC) supported Ru and Rh mono- or bi-metallic electrocatalysts towards hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The zeolite A or ZSM-5 derived ZTC supports and metal sites were adjusted, and all electrocatalysts outperformed the commercial Pt/C electrocatalyst for HER performance. In particular, the RhRu/(ZTC/ZSM5) sample exhibited superior catalytic performance with the overpotential of 24.8 mV@10 mA ⋅ cm-2, and outstanding stability with 1 mV drop after 20000 cyclic voltammetry circles. This work offers a simple impregnation method for the synthesis of highly performed HER electrocatalysts supported on porous zeolite-templated carbon.

Atomic Ru-Pt dual sites boost the mass activity and cycle life of alkaline hydrogen evolution

The development of highly efficient and ultrastable electrocatalysts for hydrogen generation from water/real seawater faces huge challenges. Herein, porous carbon-supported amorphous RuPt nanoclusters (Ru5.67Pt/PC) achieve mass activities of 42.28/10.93 A mgPt-1 and ultralong cycling stability in alkaline water/seawater because of the unique cluster structure and atomic Ru-Pt dual sites.

Atomic Layer Deposition of TiO2 on Si Window Enables In Situ ATR-SEIRAS Measurements in Strong Alkaline Electrolytes

The Si window is the most widely used internal reflection element (IRE) for electrochemical attenuated total reflection surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (ATR-SEIRAS), yet local chemical etching on Si by concentrated OH- anions bottlenecks the reliable application of this method in strong alkaline electrolytes. In this report, atomic layer deposition of a 25 nm nonconductive TiO2 barrier layer on the reflecting plane of a Si prism is demonstrated to address this challenge. In situ ATR-SEIRAS measurement on a Au film electrode with the Si/TiO2 composite IRE in 1 M NaOH reveals reversible global spectral features without spectral distortion at 1000-1300 cm-1, in stark contrast to those obtained with a bare Si window. By applying this structured ATR-SEIRAS, ethanol electrooxidation on a Pt/C catalyst in 1 and 5 M NaOH is explored, manifesting that such high pH values prevent the adsorption of as-formed acetate in the C2 pathway but not that of CO intermediate in the C1 pathway.

Hydrogen Electrode Reactions in Energy-Related Electrocatalysis Systems

Hydrogen electrode reactions, including hydrogen evolution reactions and hydrogen oxidation reactions, are fundamental and crucial within aqueous electrochemistry. Particularly in energy-related electrocatalysis processes, there is a consistent involvement of hydrogen-related electrochemical processes, underscoring the need for in-depth study. This review encompasses significant reports, delving into elementary steps and reaction mechanisms of hydrogen electrode reactions, as well as catalyst design strategies. In addition, we focus on the application of hydrogen electrode reaction mechanism in different energy-related electrocatalytic reactions, and the significance of the promotion and suppression of reaction kinetics in different reaction systems. It thoroughly elucidated the significance of these reactions and the need for a deeper understanding, offering a novel perspective for the future development of this field.

Local Charge Transfer Unveils Antideactivation of Ru at High Potentials for the Alkaline Hydrogen Oxidation Reaction

The activity of Ru-based alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) electrocatalysts usually decreases rapidly at potentials higher than 0.1 V (vs a reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)), which significantly limits the lifetime of fuel cells. It is found that this phenomenon is caused by the overadsorption of the O species due to the overcharging of Ru nanoparticles at high potentials. Here, Mn1Ox(OH)y clusters-modified Ru nanoparticles (Mn1Ox(OH)y@Ru/C) were prepared to promote charge transfer from overcharged Ru nanoparticles to Mn1Ox(OH)y clusters. Mn1Ox(OH)y@Ru/C exhibits high HOR activity and stability over a wide potential range of 0-1.0 V. Moreover, a hydroxide exchange membrane fuel cell with a Mn1Ox(OH)y@Ru/C anode delivers a high peak power density of 1.731 W cm-2, much superior to that of a Pt/C anode. In situ X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that Mn in Mn1Ox(OH)y clusters could receive more electrons from overcharged Ru at higher potentials and significantly decrease the overadsorption of the O species on Ru, thus permitting the HOR on Ru to proceed at high potentials. This study provides guidance for the design of alkaline HOR catalysts without activity decay at high potentials.

Computational Investigation of LiF Formation at Graphite-Electrolyte Interfaces

The performance of rechargeable batteries is strongly influenced by the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI), and a comprehensive understanding of SEI formation from the atomic level is crucial for effective battery design. The dynamics of the electrode-electrolyte interface is important and needs to be considered when evaluating the mechanism of the SEI formation. Here, we employed ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to examine interfacial behaviors and LiF formation. Through molecular dynamics and structure sampling, we successfully constructed an electrochemical stability diagram correlating the thermodynamic free energy with the potential, which is determined by the work function of electrode surfaces. DFT calculations revealed that LiF formation at the graphite-electrolyte interfaces occurs easily via the intermediate LiHF complex. Interestingly, LiF tends to be solvated by solvents rather than directly deposited onto electrode surfaces (e.g., the Au electrode), a phenomenon we identify as a critical determinant of the porous and uneven nature of the LiF layer observed on graphite electrodes. Our finding offers new mechanistic insights into LiF formation at graphite-electrolyte interfaces.

Bimetallic Cu@Ru Core-Shell Structures with Ligand Effects for Endo-Exogenous Stimulation-Mediated Dynamic Oncotherapy

Dynamic therapies, which induce reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in situ through endogenous and exogenous stimulation, are emerging as attractive options for tumor treatment. However, the complexity of the tumor substantially limits the efficacy of individual stimulus-triggered dynamic therapy. Herein, bimetallic copper and ruthenium (Cu@Ru) core-shell nanoparticles are applied for endo-exogenous stimulation-triggered dynamic therapy. The electronic structure of Cu@Ru is regulated through the ligand effects to improve the adsorption level for small molecules, such as water and oxygen. The core-shell heterojunction interface can rapidly separate electron-hole pairs generated by ultrasound and light stimulation, which initiate reactions with adsorbed small molecules, thus enhancing ROS generation. This synergistically complements tumor treatment together with ROS from endogenous stimulation. In vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrate that Cu@Ru nanoparticles can induce tumor cell apoptosis and ferroptosis through generated ROS. This study provides a new paradigm for endo-exogenous stimulation-based synergistic tumor treatment.

CuOx/Cu nanorod skeleton supported Ru-doped CoO/NC nanocomposites for overall water splitting

High overpotential and low stability are major challenges for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER)/oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Tuning the electronic structure of catalysts is regarded as a core strategy to enhance catalytic activity. Herein, we report CuOx/Cu nanorod skeleton supported Ru doped cobalt oxide/nitrogen-doped carbon nanocomposites (Ru-CoO/NC/CuOx/Cu, denoted as RCUF) as bifunctional catalysis. The one-dimensional/three-dimensional (1D/3D) nanostructure and defect-rich amorphous/crystalline phases of RCUF facilitates active site exposure and electron transport. Experimental characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculation results indicate that Ru doping can optimize the electronic structure, which accelerates the water dissociation process and reduces the Gibbs free energy of the reaction intermediates. As expected, the optimal RCUF-900 exhibits low overpotential (25/205 mV at 10 mA cm-2) and high stability (100/100 h) for HER/OER. RCUF-900 has low voltage (1.54 V at 10 mA cm-2) and high stability (100 h) for overall water splitting. This work provides new insights into the design of advanced catalysts for overall water splitting.

Hydrogenated TiO2 Carbon Support for PtRu Anode Catalyst in High-Performance Anion-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

The availability of durable, high-performance electrocatalysts for the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) is currently a constraint for anion-exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). Herein, a rapid microwave-assisted synthesis method is used to develop a core-shell catalyst support based on a hydrogenated TiO2/carbon for PtRu nanoparticles (NPs). The hydrogenated TiO2 provides a strong metal-support interaction with the PtRu NPs, which improves the catalyst's oxophilicity and HOR activity compared to commercial PtRu/C and enables greater size control of the catalyst NPs. The as-synthesized PtRu/TiO2/C-400 electrocatalyst exhibits respectable performance in an AEMFC operated at 80 °C, yielding the highest current density (up to 3× higher) within the catalytic region (compared at 0.80-0.90 V) and voltage efficiency (68%@ 0.5 A cm-2) values in the compared literature. In addition, the cell demonstrates promising short-term voltage stability with a minor voltage decay of 1.5 mV h-1. This "first-of-its-kind in alkaline" work may open further research avenues to develop rapid synthesis methods to prepare advanced core-shell metal-oxide/carbon supports for electrocatalysts for use in the next-generation of AEMFCs with potential applicability to the broader electrochemical systems research community.

Temperature-Induced Interface Hybridization of WC Boosts NiCu Activity for Alkaline Hydrogen Oxidation Reaction

The development of non-precious hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) catalysts is a major challenge for the commercialization of Pt-free fuel cells. Herein, a temperature-induced phase hybridization method is reported that greatly improves the catalytic performance of NiCu alloy for the HOR. The migration of W atoms hybridizes the interface of tungsten oxide (WOx) and tungsten carbide (WC) at the onset reduction temperature of WOx, leading to a greatly weakened H binding energy and an optimized OH binding energy, which endows NiCuW/WOx-WC@WC with favorable stability and CO resistance during HOR. The hybridization catalysts deliver a high mass activity of 29.37 mA mg-1 Ni and reach a peak power of 298 mW.cm-2 in H2-O2 anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs).

From Charge to Spin: An In-Depth Exploration of Electron Transfer in Energy Electrocatalysis

Catalytic materials play crucial roles in various energy-related processes, ranging from large-scale chemical production to advancements in renewable energy technologies. Despite a century of dedicated research, major enduring challenges associated with enhancing catalyst efficiency and durability, particularly in green energy-related electrochemical reactions, remain. Focusing only on either the crystal structure or electronic structure of a catalyst is deemed insufficient to break the linear scaling relationship (LSR), which is the golden rule for the design of advanced catalysts. The discourse in this review intricately outlines the essence of heterogeneous catalysis reactions by highlighting the vital roles played by electron properties. The physical and electrochemical properties of electron charge and spin that govern catalysis efficiencies are analyzed. Emphasis is placed on the pronounced influence of external fields in perturbing the LSR, underscoring the vital role that electron spin plays in advancing high-performance catalyst design. The review culminates by proffering insights into the potential applications of spin catalysis, concluding with a discussion of extant challenges and inherent limitations.

The Superaerophobic N-Doped Carbon Nanocage with Hydrogen Spillover Effort for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution

Under the high current density, the excessive strong adsorption of H* intermediates and H2 accumulation the catalysts are the major obstacle to the industrial application of hydrogen evolation reaction (HER) catalysts. Herein, through experimental exploration, it is found that the superaerophobic Nitrogen (N)-doped carbon material can promote the rapid release of H2 and provide H* desorption site for the hydrogen spillover process, which makes it have great potential as the catalysts support for hydrogen spillover. Based on this discovery, this work develops the hydrogen spillover catalyst with electron-rich Pt sites loaded on N-doped carbon nanocage (N-CNC) with adjustable work function. Through a series of comprehensive electrochemical tests, the existence of hydrogen spillover effort has been proved. Moreover, the in situ tests showed that pyrrolic-N can activate adjacent carbon sites as the desorption sites for hydrogen spillover. The Pt@N-1-CNC with the minimum work function difference (ΔΦ) between Pt NPs and support shows superior hydrogen evolution performance, only needs overpotential of 12.2 mV to reach current density of 10 mA cm-2 , outstanding turnover frequency (TOF) (44.7 s-1 @100 mV) and superior durability under the 360 h durability tests at current density of 50 mA cm-2 .

Twinning Engineering of Platinum/Iridium Nanonets as Turing-Type Catalysts for Efficient Water Splitting

The twin boundary, a common lattice plane of mirror-symmetric crystals, may have high reactivity due to special atomic coordination. However, twinning platinum and iridium nanocatalysts are grand challenges due to the high stacking fault energies that are nearly 1 order of magnitude larger than those of easy-twinning gold and silver. Here, we demonstrate that Turing structuring, realized by selective etching of superthin metal film, provides 14.3 and 18.9 times increases in twin-boundary densities for platinum and iridium nanonets, comparable to the highly twinned silver nanocatalysts. The Turing configurations with abundant low-coordination atoms contribute to the formation of nanotwins and create a large active surface area. Theoretical calculations reveal that the specific atom arrangement on the twin boundary changes the electronic structure and reduces the energy barrier of water dissociation. The optimal Turing-type platinum nanonets demonstrated excellent hydrogen-evolution-reaction performance with a 25.6 mV overpotential at 10.0 mA·cm-2 and a 14.8-fold increase in mass activity. And the bifunctional Turing iridium catalysts integrated in the water electrolyzer had a mass activity 23.0 times that of commercial iridium catalysts. This work opens a new avenue for nanocrystal twinning as a facile paradigm for designing high-performance nanocatalysts.

Unveiling the nature of Pt-induced anti-deactivation of Ru for alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction

While Ru owns superior catalytic activity toward hydrogen oxidation reaction and cost advantages, the catalyst deactivation under high anodic potential range severely limits its potential to replace the Pt benchmark catalyst. Unveiling the deactivation mechanism of Ru and correspondingly developing protection strategies remain a great challenge. Herein, we develop atomic Pt-functioned Ru nanoparticles with excellent anti-deactivation feature and meanwhile employ advanced operando characterization tools to probe the underlying roles of Pt in the anti-deactivation. Our studies reveal the introduced Pt single atoms effectively prevent Ru from oxidative passivation and consequently preserve the interfacial water network for the critical H* oxidative release during catalysis. Clearly understanding the deactivation nature of Ru and Pt-induced anti-deactivation under atomic levels could provide valuable insights for rationally designing stable Ru-based catalysts for hydrogen oxidation reaction and beyond.

Facilitating alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction on the hetero-interfaced Ru/RuO2 through Pt single atoms doping

Exploring an active and cost-effective electrocatalyst alternative to carbon-supported platinum nanoparticles for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) have remained elusive to date. Here, we report a catalyst based on platinum single atoms (SAs) doped into the hetero-interfaced Ru/RuO2 support (referred to as Pt-Ru/RuO2), which features a low HER overpotential, an excellent stability and a distinctly enhanced cost-based activity compared to commercial Pt/C and Ru/C in 1 M KOH. Advanced physico-chemical characterizations disclose that the sluggish water dissociation is accelerated by RuO2 while Pt SAs and the metallic Ru facilitate the subsequent H* combination. Theoretical calculations correlate with the experimental findings. Furthermore, Pt-Ru/RuO2 only requires 1.90 V to reach 1 A cm-2 and delivers a high price activity in the anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer, outperforming the benchmark Pt/C. This research offers a feasible guidance for developing the noble metal-based catalysts with high performance and low cost toward practical H2 production.

Implanting oxophilic metal in PtRu nanowires for hydrogen oxidation catalysis

Bimetallic PtRu are promising electrocatalysts for hydrogen oxidation reaction in anion exchange membrane fuel cell, where the activity and stability are still unsatisfying. Here, PtRu nanowires were implanted with a series of oxophilic metal atoms (named as i-M-PR), significantly enhancing alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) activity and stability. With the dual doping of In and Zn atoms, the i-ZnIn-PR/C shows mass activity of 10.2 A mgPt+Ru-1 at 50 mV, largely surpassing that of commercial Pt/C (0.27 A mgPt-1) and PtRu/C (1.24 A mgPt+Ru-1). More importantly, the peak power density and specific power density are as high as 1.84 W cm-2 and 18.4 W mgPt+Ru-1 with a low loading (0.1 mg cm-2) anion exchange membrane fuel cell. Advanced experimental characterizations and theoretical calculations collectively suggest that dual doping with In and Zn atoms optimizes the binding strengths of intermediates and promotes CO oxidation, enhancing the HOR performances. This work deepens the understanding of developing novel alloy catalysts, which will attract immediate interest in materials, chemistry, energy and beyond.

A Highly-Efficient Boron Interstitially Inserted Ru Anode Catalyst for Anion Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

Developing high-performance electrocatalysts for alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) is crucial for the commercialization of anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). Here, boron interstitially inserted ruthenium (B-Ru/C) is synthesized and used as an anode catalyst for AEMFC, achieving a peak power density of 1.37 W cm-2 , close to the state-of-the-art commercial PtRu catalyst. Unexpectedly, instead of the monotonous decline of HOR kinetics with pH as generally believed, an inflection point behavior in the pH-dependent HOR kinetics on B-Ru/C is observed, showing an anomalous behavior that the HOR activity under alkaline electrolyte surpasses acidic electrolyte. Experimental results and density functional theory calculations reveal that the upshifted d-band center of Ru after the intervention of interstitial boron can lead to enhanced adsorption ability of OH and H2 O, which together with the reduced energy barrier of water formation, contributes to the outstanding alkaline HOR performance with a mass activity of 1.716 mA µgPGM -1 , which is 13.4-fold and 5.2-fold higher than that of Ru/C and commercial Pt/C, respectively.

Electrocatalytic Coenhancement of Bimetallic Polyphthalocyanine-Anchored Ru Nanoclusters Enabling Efficient Overall Water Splitting at Ampere-Level Current Densities

Efficient electrocatalysts capable of operating continuously at industrial ampere-level current densities are crucial for large-scale applications of electrocatalytic water decomposition for hydrogen production. However, long-term industrial overall water splitting using a single electrocatalyst remains a major challenge. Here, bimetallic polyphthalocyanine (FeCoPPc)-anchored Ru nanoclusters, an innovative electrocatalyst comprising the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) active Ru and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) active FeCoPPc, engineered for efficient overall water splitting are demonstrated. By density functional theory calculations and systematic experiments, the electrocatalytic coenhancement effect resulting from unique charge redistribution, which synergistically boosts the HER activity of Ru and the OER activity of FeCoPPc by optimizing the adsorption energy of intermediates, is unveiled. As a result, even at a large current density of 2.0 A cm-2 , the catalyst exhibits low overpotentials of 220 and 308 mV, respectively, for HER and OER. It exhibits excellent stability, requiring only 1.88 V of cell voltage to achieve a current density of 2.0 A cm-2 in a 6.0 m KOH electrolyte at 70 °C, with a remarkable operational stability of over 100 h. This work provides a new electrocatalytic coenhancement strategy for the design and synthesis of electrocatalyst, paving the way for industrial-scale overall water splitting applications.

Constructing Symmetry-Mismatched RuxFe3-xO4 Heterointerface-Supported Ru Clusters for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution and Oxidation Reactions

Ru-related catalysts have shown excellent performance for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR); however, a deep understanding of Ru-active sites on a nanoscale heterogeneous support for hydrogen catalysis is still lacking. Herein, a click chemistry strategy is proposed to design Ru cluster-decorated nanometer RuxFe3-xO4 heterointerfaces (Ru/RuxFe3-xO4) as highly effective bifunctional hydrogen catalysts. It is found that introducing Ru into nanometric Fe3O4 species breaks the symmetry configuration and optimizes the active site in Ru/RuxFe3-xO4 for HER and HOR. As expected, the catalyst displays prominent alkaline HER and HOR performance with mass activity much higher than that of commercial Pt/C as well as robust stability during catalysis because of the strong interaction between the Ru cluster and the RuxFe3-xO4 support, and the optimized adsorption intermediate (Had and OHad). This work sheds light on a promsing approach to improving the electrocatalysis performance of catalysts by the breaking of atomic dimension symmetry.

Ammonia Electrosynthesis from Nitrate Using a Ruthenium-Copper Cocatalyst System: A Full Concentration Range Study

Electrochemical synthesis of ammonia via the nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) has been intensively researched as an alternative to the traditional Haber-Bosch process. Most research focuses on the low concentration range representative of the nitrate level in wastewater, leaving the high concentration range, which exists in nuclear and fertilizer wastes, unexplored. The use of a concentrated electrolyte (≥1 M) for higher rate production is hampered by poor hydrogen transfer kinetics. Herein, we demonstrate that a cocatalytic system of Ru/Cu2O catalyst enables NO3RR at 10.0 A in 1 M nitrate electrolyte in a 16 cm2 flow electrolyzer, with 100% faradaic efficiency toward ammonia. Detailed mechanistic studies by deuterium labeling and operando Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy allow us to probe the hydrogen transfer rate and intermediate species on Ru/Cu2O. Ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations reveal that adsorbed hydroxide on Ru nanoparticles increases the density of the hydrogen-bonded water network near the Cu2O surface, which promotes the hydrogen transfer rate. Our work highlights the importance of engineering synergistic interactions in cocatalysts for addressing the kinetic bottleneck in electrosynthesis.

A Critical Review on Hydrogen Based Fuel Cell Technology and Applications

The research in energy storage and conversion is playing a critical role in energy policy as the innovation and technological progress are essential for achieving the energy transition and climate neutrality goals. Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology is considered a strategic element in the pursuit of sustainable and clean energy solutions. This technology is increasingly gaining attention in recent years as a potential substitute to conventional non-renewable energy sources. Fuel cell technology can be employed for domestic/commercial use along with powering the transportation sector which currently employs the use of conventional battery systems. However, these systems pose severe limitations with respect to longer charging times and limited distance range. This review article aims at providing a comprehensive methodical overview of hydrogen-based fuel cell technology along with key concepts, present day scenarios, including overview of the market and industry trends, government policies and initiatives, along with major stakeholders involved in scaling up the technology for mass consumption. The outlook of fuel cells, including their capability to revolutionise the energy sector is discussed. The technological advancements and breakthroughs on the horizon along with the challenges and safety concerns related to the widespread acceptance of fuel cells are analysed.

Machine Learning-Assisted Automatically Electrochemical Addressable Cytosensing Arrays for Anticancer Drug Screening

The high-throughput and accurate screening of anticancer drugs is crucial to the preclinical assessment of candidate drugs and remains challenging. Herein, an automatically electrochemical addressable cytosensor (AEAC) for the efficient screening of anticancer drugs is reported. This sensor consists of sectionalized laser-induced graphene arrays decorated by the rhombohedral TiO2 and spherical Pt nanoparticles (LIG-TiO2-Pt) with high electrocatalytic activity for H2O2 and a homemade Ag/Pt electrode couple fixed onto the robot arm. The immobilization of laminin on the surface of LIG-TiO2-Pt can promote its biocompatibility for the growth and proliferation of various tumor cells, which empowers the in situ monitoring of H2O2 directly released from these live cells for drug screening. A machine learning (ML) algorithm is employed to eliminate the possible random or systematic errors of AEAC, realizing rapid, high-throughput, and accurate prediction of different types of anticancer drugs. This ML-assisted AEAC provides a powerful approach to accelerate the evolution of sensing-served tumor therapy.

Breaking Surface Atomic Monogeneity of Rh2 P Nanocatalysts by Defect-Derived Phosphorus Vacancies for Efficient Alkaline Hydrogen Oxidation

Breaking atomic monogeneity of catalyst surfaces is promising for constructing synergistic active centers to cope with complex multi-step catalytic reactions. Here, we report a defect-derived strategy for creating surface phosphorous vacancies (P-vacancies) on nanometric Rh2 P electrocatalysts toward drastically boosted electrocatalysis for alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR). This strategy disrupts the monogeneity and atomic regularity of the thermodynamically stable P-terminated surfaces. Density functional theory calculations initially verify that the competitive adsorption behavior of Had and OHad on perfect P-terminated Rh2 P{200} facets (p-Rh2 P) can be bypassed on defective Rh2 P{200} surfaces (d-Rh2 P). The P-vacancies enable the exposure of sub-surface Rh atoms to act as exclusive H adsorption sites. Therein, the Had cooperates with the OHad on the peripheral P-sites to effectively accelerate the alkaline HOR. Defective Rh2 P nanowires (d-Rh2 P NWs) and perfect Rh2 P nanocubes (p-Rh2 P NCs) are then elaborately synthesized to experimentally represent the d-Rh2 P and p-Rh2 P catalytic surfaces. As expected, the P-vacancy-enriched d-Rh2 P NWs catalyst exhibits extremely high catalytic activity and outstanding CO tolerance for alkaline HOR electrocatalysis, attaining 5.7 and 14.3 times mass activity that of p-Rh2 P NCs and commercial Pt/C, respectively. This work sheds light on breaking the surface atomic monogeneity for the development of efficient heterogeneous catalysts.

Slowly Removing Surface Ligand by Aging Enhances the Stability of Pd Nanosheets toward Electron Beam Irradiation and Electrocatalysis

Surface ligands play an important role in shape-controlled growth and stabilization of colloidal nanocrystals. Their quick removal tends to cause structural deformation and/or aggregation to the nanocrystals. Herein, we demonstrate that the surface ligand based on poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) can be slowly removed from Pd nanosheets (NSs, 0.93±0.17 nm in thickness) by simply aging the colloidal suspension. The aged Pd NSs show well-preserved morphology, together with significantly enhanced stability toward both e-beam irradiation and electrocatalysis (e.g., ethanol oxidation). It is revealed that the slow desorption of PVP during aging forces the re-exposed Pd atoms to reorganize, facilitating the surface to transform from being nearly perfect to defect-rich. The resultant Pd NSs with abundant defects no longer rely on surface ligand to stabilize the atomic arrangement and thus show excellent structural and electrochemical stability. This work provides a facile and effective method to maintain the integrity of colloidal nanocrystals by slowly removing the surface ligand.

V-O Species-Doped Carbon Frameworks Loaded with Ru Nanoparticles as Highly Efficient and CO-Tolerant Catalysts for Alkaline Hydrogen Oxidation

Efficient and CO-tolerant catalysts for alkaline hydrogen oxidation (HOR) are vital to the commercial application of anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). Herein, a robust Ru-based catalyst (Ru/VOC) with ultrasmall Ru nanoparticles supported on carbon frameworks with atomically dispersed V-O species is prepared elaborately. The catalyst exhibits a remarkable mass activity of 3.44 mA μgPGM, which is 31.3 times that of Ru/C and even 4.7 times higher than that of Pt/C. Moreover, the Ru/VOC anode can achieve a peak power density (PPD) of 1.194 W cm-2, much superior to that of Ru/C anode and even better than that of Pt/C anode. In addition, the catalyst also exhibits superior stability and exceptional CO tolerance. Experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that V-O species are ideal OH- adsorption sites, which allow Ru to release more sites for hydrogen adsorption. Furthermore, the electron transfer from Ru nanoparticles to the carbon substrate regulates the electronic structure of Ru, reducing the hydrogen binding energy (HBE) and the CO adsorption energy on Ru, thus boosting the alkaline HOR performance and CO tolerance of the catalyst. This is the first report that oxophilic single atoms distributed on carbon frameworks serve as OH- adsorption sites for efficient hydrogen oxidation, opening up new guidance for the elaborate design of high-activity catalysts for the alkaline HOR.

Sub-3 nm Pt@Ru toward Outstanding Hydrogen Oxidation Reaction Performance in Alkaline Media

Anion-exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) are promising alternative hydrogen conversion devices. However, the sluggish kinetics of the hydrogen oxidation reaction in alkaline media hinders further development of AEMFCs. As a synthesis method commonly used to prepare disordered PtRu alloys, the impregnation process is ingeniously designed herein to synthesize sub-3 nm Pt@Ru core-shell nanoparticles by sequentially reducing Pt and Ru at different annealing temperatures. This method avoids complex procedures and synthesis conditions for organic synthesis systems, and the atomic structure evolution of the synthesized core-shell nanoparticles can be tracked. The synthesized Pt@Ru electrocatalyst shows an ultrasmall average size of ∼2.5 nm and thereby a large electrochemical surface area (ECSA) of 166.66 m2 gPt+Ru-1. Exchange current densities (j0) normalized to the mass (Pt + Ru) and ECSA of this electrocatalyst are 8.0 and 5.8 times as high as those of commercial Pt/C, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, the achieved mass-normalized j0 measured by rotating disk electrodes is the highest reported so far. The membrane electrode assembly test of the Pt@Ru electrocatalyst shows a peak power density of 1.78 W cm-2 (0.152 mgPt+Ru cmanode-2), which is higher than that of commercial PtRu/C (1.62 W cm-2, 0.211 mgPt+Ru cmanode-2). The improvement of the intrinsic activity can be attributed to the electron transfer from the Ru shell to the Pt core, and the ultrafine particles further enhance the mass activity. This work reveals the feasibility of using simple impregnation to synthesize fine core-shell nanocatalysts and the importance of investigating the atomic structure of PtRu nanoparticles and other disordered alloys.

Exploring the Cation Regulation Mechanism for Interfacial Water Involved in the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction by In Situ Raman Spectroscopy

Interfacial water molecules are the most important participants in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Hence, understanding the behavior and role that interfacial water plays will ultimately reveal the HER mechanism. Unfortunately, investigating interfacial water is extremely challenging owing to the interference caused by bulk water molecules and complexity of the interfacial environment. Here, the behaviors of interfacial water in different cationic electrolytes on Pd surfaces were investigated by the electrochemistry, in situ core-shell nanostructure enhanced Raman spectroscopy and theoretical simulation techniques. Direct spectral evidence reveals a red shift in the frequency and a decrease in the intensity of interfacial water as the potential is shifted in the positively direction. When comparing the different cation electrolyte systems at a given potential, the frequency of the interfacial water peak increases in the specified order: Li+  < Na+  < K+  < Ca2+  < Sr2+. The structure of interfacial water was optimized by adjusting the radius, valence, and concentration of cation to form the two-H down structure. This unique interfacial water structure will improve the charge transfer efficiency between the water and electrode further enhancing the HER performance. Therefore, local cation tuning strategies can be used to improve the HER performance by optimizing the interfacial water structure.

Improving Alkaline Hydrogen Oxidation through Dynamic Lattice Hydrogen Migration in Pd@Pt Core-Shell Electrocatalysts

Tracking the trajectory of hydrogen intermediates during hydrogen electro-catalysis is beneficial for designing synergetic multi-component catalysts with division of chemical labor. Herein, we demonstrate a novel dynamic lattice hydrogen (LH) migration mechanism that leads to two orders of magnitude increase in the alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) activity on Pd@Pt over pure Pd, even ≈31.8 times mass activity enhancement than commercial Pt. Specifically, the polarization-driven electrochemical hydrogenation process from Pd@Pt to PdHx @Pt by incorporating LH allows more surface vacancy Pt sites to increase the surface H coverage. The inverse dehydrogenation process makes PdHx as an H reservoir, providing LH migrates to the surface of Pt and participates in the HOR. Meanwhile, the formation of PdHx induces electronic effect, lowering the energy barrier of rate-determining Volmer step, thus resulting in the HOR kinetics on Pd@Pt being proportional to the LH concentration in the in situ formed PdHx @Pt. Moreover, this dynamic catalysis mechanism would open up the catalysts scope for hydrogen electro-catalysis.

Modifying charge transfer between rhodium and ceria for boosted hydrogen oxidation reaction in alkaline electrolyte

Sluggish kinetics of hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) in alkaline solution has restricted the rapid development of hydrogen economy. Constructing catalyst with metal-oxide heterostructures can enhance HOR performance; however, little studies concentrate on charge transfer between them, and the corresponding effects on reactions remain unclear. Herein, we report charge-transfer-adjustable CeO2/Rh interfaces uniformly dispersed on multiwalled carbon nanotube (CNT), which exhibit excellent alkaline HOR performance. Results confirm that the charge transfer from Rh to CeO2 could be conveniently tuned via thermal treatment. Consequently, the adsorption free energies of H* in Rh sites and OH* adsorption strength in CeO2 could be adjusted, as corroborated by density functional theory study. The optimized CeO2/Rh interfaces exhibit an exchange current density and a mass-specific kinetic current of 0.53 mA cmPGM-2 and 830 A gPGM-1 at an overpotential of 50 mV, respectively, which surpasses most of the advanced noble-metal-based electrocatalysts. This work provides a new insight of harnessing charge transfer of heterostructure to enhance catalytic activities.

Metastable Hexagonal-Phase Nickel with Ultralow Pt Content for an Efficient Alkaline/Seawater Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Hydrogen has been hailed as the core of the world's future energy architecture. It is imperative to develop catalysts with an efficient and sustained hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) to scale up alkaline/seawater electrolysis, yet significant difficulties and challenges, such as the high usage of precious metals, still remain. In this paper, a metastable-phase hexagonal close-packed (hcp) Ni-based catalyst with ultralow Pt content (3.1 at %) was designed, which has excellent catalytic performance in the alkaline/seawater HER. The optimal catalyst offers low overpotentials of 21 and 137 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and remains stable during operation for 100 and 300 h at this current density in 1.0 M KOH and real seawater, respectively. A mechanistic study shows that the metastable-phase Ni acts as an anchor site for OH-, which promotes the dissociation of water and greatly improves the formation rate of H2.

Electric Double Layer Effects in Electrocatalysis: Insights from Ab Initio Simulation and Hierarchical Continuum Modeling

Structures of the electric double layer (EDL) at electrocatalytic interfaces, which are modulated by the material properties, the electrolyte characteristics (e.g., the pH, the types and concentrations of ions), and the electrode potential, play crucial roles in the reaction kinetics. Understanding the EDL effects in electrocatalysis has attracted substantial research interest in recent years. However, the intrinsic relationships between the specific EDL structures and electrocatalytic kinetics remain poorly understood, especially on the atomic scale. In this Perspective, we briefly review the recent advances in deciphering the EDL effects mainly in hydrogen and oxygen electrocatalysis through a multiscale approach, spanning from the atomistic scale simulated by ab initio methods to the macroscale by a hierarchical approach. We highlight the importance of resolving the local reaction environment, especially the local hydrogen bond network, in understanding EDL effects. Finally, some of the remaining challenges are outlined, and an outlook for future developments in these exciting frontiers is provided.

Constructing asymmetric double-atomic sites for synergistic catalysis of electrochemical CO2 reduction

Elucidating the synergistic catalytic mechanism between multiple active centers is of great significance for heterogeneous catalysis; however, finding the corresponding experimental evidence remains challenging owing to the complexity of catalyst structures and interface environment. Here we construct an asymmetric TeN2-CuN3 double-atomic site catalyst, which is analyzed via full-range synchrotron pair distribution function. In electrochemical CO2 reduction, the catalyst features a synergistic mechanism with the double-atomic site activating two key molecules: operando spectroscopy confirms that the Te center activates CO2, and the Cu center helps to dissociate H2O. The experimental and theoretical results reveal that the TeN2-CuN3 could cooperatively lower the energy barriers for the rate-determining step, promoting proton transfer kinetics. Therefore, the TeN2-CuN3 displays a broad potential range with high CO selectivity, improved kinetics and good stability. This work presents synthesis and characterization strategies for double-atomic site catalysts, and experimentally unveils the underpinning mechanism of synergistic catalysis.

PtNi/PtIn-Skin Fishbone-Like Nanowires Boost Alkaline Hydrogen Oxidation Catalysis

The development of high-performance platinum (Pt)-based electrocatalysts for the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) is highly desirable for hydrogen fuel cells, but it is limited by the sluggish kinetics and severe carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning in alkaline medium. Herein, we explore a class of facet-selected Pt-nickel-indium fishbone-like nanowires (PtNiIn FNWs) featuring high-index facets (HIFs) of Pt3In skin as efficient alkaline HOR catalysts. Impressively, the optimized Pt66Ni6In28 FNWs show the highest mass and specific activities of 4.02 A mgPt-1 and 6.56 mA cm-2, 2.0/2.1 and 13.9/15.6 times larger than those of commercial PtRu/C and commercial Pt/C, respectively, along with a competitive CO-tolerance ability. Specifically, they exhibit only 6.0% current density decay after 10000 s of operation and 25.7% activity loss after 2000 s in the presence of 1000 ppm of CO. Moreover, an isotope experiment and density functional theory (DFT) calculations further prove that the unique structure and synergy among Pt, Ni, and In endow these Pt66Ni6In28 FNWs with an optimized hydrogen binding energy (HBE) and an advantageous hydroxide binding energy (OHBE), giving them excellent alkaline HOR properties. The combined construction of surface-skin and HIFs in PtNiIn FNWs will offer an available method to realize the potential applications of advanced non-PtRu-based catalysts in fuel cells and beyond.
