Emission behaviors of unsymmetrical 1,3-diaryl-β-diketones: a model perfectly disclosing the effect of molecular conformation on luminescence of organic solids

Kinetic Trapping of Photoluminescent Frameworks During High-Concentration Synthesis of Non-Emissive Metal-Organic Frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous, crystalline materials constructed from organic linkers and inorganic nodes with potential utility in gas separations, drug delivery, sensing, and catalysis. Small variations in MOF synthesis conditions can lead to a range of accessible frameworks with divergent chemical or photophysical properties. New methods to controllably access phases with tailored properties would broaden the scope of MOFs that can be reliably prepared for specific applications. Herein, we demonstrate that simply increasing the reaction concentration during the solvothermal synthesis of M2(dobdc) (M = Mg, Mn, Ni; dobdc4- = 2,5-dioxido-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate) MOFs unexpectedly leads to trapping of a new framework termed CORN-MOF-1 (CORN = Cornell University) instead. In-depth spectroscopic, crystallographic, and computational studies support that CORN-MOF-1 has a similar structure to M2(dobdc) but with partially protonated linkers and charge-balancing or coordinated formate groups in the pores. The resultant variation in linker spacings causes CORN-MOF-1 (Mg) to be strongly photoluminescent in the solid state, whereas H4dobdc and Mg2(dobdc) are weakly emissive due to excimer formation. In-depth photophysical studies suggest that CORN-MOF-1 (Mg) is the first MOF based on the H2dobdc2- linker that likely does not emit via an excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) pathway. In addition, CORN-MOF-1 variants can be converted into high-quality samples of the thermodynamic M2(dobdc) phases by heating in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF). Overall, our findings support that high-concentration synthesis provides a straightforward method to identify new MOFs with properties distinct from known materials and to produce highly porous samples of MOFs, paving the way for the discovery and gram-scale synthesis of framework materials.

Naturally Occurring Chalcones with Aggregation-Induced Emission Enhancement Characteristics

In this paper, the natural chalcones: 2'-hydroxy-4,4',6'-trimethoxychalcone (HCH), cardamonin (CA), xanthohumol (XN), isobavachalcone (IBC) and licochalcone A (LIC) are studied using spectroscopic techniques such as UV-vis, fluorescence spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD). For the first time, the spectroscopic and structural features of naturally occurring chalcones with varying numbers and positions of hydroxyl groups in rings A and B were investigated to prove the presence of the aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) effect. The fluorescence studies were carried out in the aggregate form in a solution and in a solid state. As to the results of spectroscopic analyses conducted in the solvent media, the selected mixtures (CH₃OH:H₂O and CH₃OH:ethylene glycol), as well as the fluorescence quantum yield (ϕ_F) and SEM, confirmed that two of the tested chalcones (CA and HCH) exhibited effective AIEE behaviour. On the other hand, LIC showed a large fluorescence quantum yield and Stokes shift in the polar solvents and in the solid state. Moreover, all studied compounds were tested for their promising antioxidant activities via the utilisation of 1,1- diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl as a free-radical scavenging reagent as well as potential anti-neurodegenerative agents via their ability to act as acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) inhibitors. Finally, the results demonstrated that licochalcone A, with the most desirable emission properties, showed the most effective antioxidant (DPPH IC₅₀ 29%) and neuroprotective properties (AChE IC₅₀ 23.41 ± 0.02 μM, BuChE IC₅₀ 42.28 ± 0.06 μM). The substitution pattern and the biological assay findings establish some relation between photophysical properties and biological activity that might apply in designing AIEE molecules with the specified characteristics for biological application.

Tuning the Solid Phase Fluorescence Emission from Long Wavelength Visible to Near-Infrared in Oxazol-5-One Derivatives: Structure-Property Relationship, Theoretical and Experimental Studies

Most of the fluorescent molecules among organic [Formula: see text]-conjugated materials show blue or green emission in the solid phase but few of them emit red-shifted visible and near-infrared light in the material science. To create molecules emitting for this feature, two π-conjugated oxazol-5-one derivatives containing donor (OCH₃) and acceptor groups (NO₂) were synthesized. Their optical and charge-transport properties were investigated through experimental and theoretical methods including the single crystal X-ray crystallography, Hirshfeld Surface Analysis, photophysical studies and Density Functional Theory (DFT), respectively. In addition, FT-IR, ¹H-NMR, ¹³C-NMR spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements were performed. According to our results, both molecules may provide the significant pathway of development of long wavelength visible and red emissive features in solid phase with the aggregation induced enhanced emission (AIEE) properties particularly in the fields of OLEDs, optical communication, defence and bioimaging.

Control of Fluorescence of Organic Dyes in the Solid-State by Supramolecular Interactions

Fluorescent organic dyes play an essential role in the creation of new "smart" materials. Fragments and functional groups capable of free rotation around single bonds can significantly change the fluorescent organic dye's electronic structure under analyte effects, phase state transitions, or changes in temperature, pressure, and media polarity. Dependencies between steric and electronic structures become highly important in transition from a solution to a solid-state. Such transitions are accompanied by a significant increase in the dye molecular structure's rigidity due to supramolecular associates' formation such as H-bonding, π···π and dipole-dipole interactions. Among those supramolecular effects, H-bonding interactions, first of all, lead to significant molecular packing changes between loose or rigid structures, thus affecting the fluorescent dye's electronic states' energy and configuration, its fluorescent signal's position and intensity. All the functional groups and heteroatoms that are met in the organic dyes seem to be involved in the control of fluorescence via H-bonding: C-H···N, C-H···π, S = O···H-C, P = O···H, C-H···O, NH···N, C - H···C, C - H···Se, N-H···O, C - H···F, C-F···H. Effects of molecular packing of fluorescent organic dyes are successfully used in developing mechano-, piezo-, thermo- fluorochromes materials for their applications in the optical recording of information, sensors, security items, memory elements, organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) technologies.

Organic polymorphs based on an AEE-active tetraphenylethene salicylaldehyde Schiff-base derivative: the effect of molecular conformation on luminescence properties

An aggregation-enhanced emission (AEE)-active tetraphenylethene salicylaldehyde Schiff-base derivative, TPE-Nap, was prepared using a facile synthesis. The AEE property of TPE-Nap was studied by luminescence and absorption spectra, and was attributed to the C Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> N isomerization restriction and the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process. Polymorphs TPE-Nap-Y and TPE-Nap-O were prepared from TPE-Nap, and their emission color and intensity were compared. TPE-Nap-Y is a yellow block crystal with a very weak yellow emission, with its main peak at 565 nm, while TPE-Nap-O is an orange plate crystal that gave a stronger orange emission, with its main peak at 583 nm. Single crystal diffraction data were used to demonstrate the structure–property relationship. The most unique feature was that the torsion angle of TPE-Nap-Y between the benzene ring of the TPE unit and the Nap unit was 54.08°, while that of TPE-Nap-O was 14.19°. Interestingly, the TPE unit assumed propeller-like nonplanar conformations that likely led to different intermolecular interactions, such as C–H⋯O interactions (2.529 Å and 2.617 Å) in TPE-Nap-O and C–H⋯π interactions (3.224 Å and 3.791 Å) in TPE-Nap-Y. These were influenced by the torsion angle, although the molecules in both crystals were arranged in a similar end-to-end slip-stacking mode. These results inferred that the molecular conformation was evidently affected by luminescent properties. Crystals possessing a slightly twisted molecular conformation exhibited stronger emission than those possessing a heavily twisted molecular conformation. These investigations will expand the research on the relationship between the molecular conformation and the emission properties of organic solids, and might provide a new development strategy for organic polymorphs.

Organic polymorphs displaying different emission colors and intensities were obtained from aggregation-enhanced emission (AEE)-active tetraphenylethene derivatives, and their luminescent properties were affected mainly by molecular conformation.

The effect of conformational isomerism on the optical properties of bis(8-oxyquinolato) diboron complexes with a 2,2'-biphenyl backbone

A fluorescent bis(8-oxyquinolato) diborinic complex with a central 2,2'-biphenyl backbone 1 and its octafluoro analogue 2 were synthesized to study the optical-structural relationship of sterically encumbered molecules featuring close intramolecular π-stacking interactions involving chromophore units. The crystal structure of 1 revealed a unique π-stacked arrangement of two pendant phenyl groups and two 8-oxyquinolato ligands (Q) located in the inner part of the complex. Unlike 1, the closely related complex 2 features conformational isomerism, and two major forms, namely 2-syn and 2-anti, are observed in solution to a varying extent depending on the solvent polarity. Form 2-syn, a geometrical analogue of 1, is preferable in polar solutions, whereas its rotational isomer 2-anti featuring π-stacking interactions between the terminal phenyl group and Q ligand dominates in benzene and chloromethane solutions. The observed conformational equilibria strongly affect the optical properties of the system, specifically leading to a significant increase of the quantum yield of emission (from 22% in MeCN to 38% in benzene) accompanied by a bathochromic shift (Δλ = 10 nm) of absorption and hypsochromic shifts (Δλ = -8 nm) of emission spectra with decreasing solvent polarity. This effect was ascribed to the variation in frontier orbital distributions.

A series of extended π-conjugated benzophenone analogs was synthesized through a facile Lewis-acid catalyzed Friedel–Crafts reaction in order to exploit the integral triplet state properties of benzophenone.

Ultraviolet Patterned Calixarene-Derived Supramolecular Gels and Films with Spatially Resolved Mechanical and Fluorescent Properties

Supramolecular assemblies have in the past been considered mechanically weak and in most cases unable to withstand their own weight. Calixarene-derived networks can, however, provide robust supramolecular gels. Incorporating a photoreactive stilbene moiety, we show that the aggregation state of the material can be tuned by heating and UV exposure in order to control the mechanical as well as the fluorescent properties. Regulating the extent of heating to control the proportion of H-aggregates and J-aggregates and further cross-linking of H-aggregates by control over UV exposure allows for adjustable photopatterning of the fluorescence as well as the material stiffness in the range from ∼100 to 450 kPa. We expect this straightforward supramolecular system will be suitable for advanced prototyping in applications where modulus and shape are important design criteria.

α-Catenin stabilises Cadherin-Catenin complexes and modulates actomyosin dynamics to allow pulsatile apical contraction

We have investigated how cell contractility and adhesion are functionally integrated during epithelial morphogenesis. To this end, we have analysed the role of α-Catenin, a key molecule linking E-Cadherin-based adhesion and the actomyosin cytoskeleton, during Drosophila embryonic dorsal closure, by studying a newly developed allelic series. We find that α-Catenin regulates pulsatile apical contraction in the amnioserosa, the main force-generating tissue driving closure of the embryonic epidermis. α-Catenin controls actomyosin dynamics by stabilising and promoting the formation of actomyosin foci, and also stabilises DE-Cadherin (Drosophila E-Cadherin, also known as Shotgun) at the cell membrane, suggesting that medioapical actomyosin contractility regulates junction stability. Furthermore, we uncover a genetic interaction between α-Catenin and Vinculin, and a tension-dependent recruitment of Vinculin to amniosersoa apical cell membranes, suggesting the existence of a mechano-sensitive module operating in this tissue.

Two-Dimensional Organic Single Crystals with Scale Regulated, Phase-Switchable, Polymorphism-Dependent, and Amplified Spontaneous Emission Properties

The successful preparation of two-dimensional (2D) single crystals can promote the development of organic optoelectronic devices with excellent performance. A Schiff base compound salicylidene(4-dimethylamino)aniline with aggregation induced emission (AIE) property was employed as the building block to fabricate 2D thin single crystal plates with scales from around 50 μm to 1.5 cm. Yellow and red emissive polymorphs were concomitantly obtained during crystallization. The single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SC-to-SC) transformation from yellow polymorph to red one was demonstrated. Furthermore, both polymorphs exhibited amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) properties. Interestingly, the red polymorph displayed size-dependent ASE characteristics. The larger red polymorph showed near-infrared ASE with maximum at 706 nm, whereas the smaller one presented red ASE with maximum at 610 nm. These results suggest that the different scale single crystalline thin films with perfect optoelectronic properties may be fabricated by using the organic molecules with 2D assembly feature.

Multicolor Amplified Spontaneous Emissions Based on Organic Polymorphs That Undergo Excited-State Intramolecular Proton Transfer

Two polymorphs emitting near-infrared (1 R form: α phase, λem =702 nm, Φf =0.41) and orange-red fluorescence (1 O form: β phase, λem =618 nm, Φf =0.05) were synthesized by finely controlling the crystallization conditions of compound 1, a structurally simple excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT)-active molecule. Multicolor amplified spontaneous emissions (ASEs) were realized, for the first time, based on these polymorphs. Notably, the 1 O crystal underwent heating-induced phase transformation from the β phase to the α form in a single-crystal to single-crystal (SCSC) manner accompanied with an unprecedented ASE changing. The ASE behavior of polymorphs 1 R, 1 O as well as the ASE changing during SCSC was investigated. The feasibility of multicolor lasing based on the present organic polymorphs was confirmed, which may provide a new development strategy for organic laser science and technology.

Single-benzene solid emitters with lasing properties based on aggregation-induced emissions

Highly efficient single-benzene solid emitters exhibiting aggregation-induced emission (AIE), crystallization-enhanced emission (CEE), as well as amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) have been obtained based on structurally simple ESIPT-active organic molecules.
