Abstract
Primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) afflicts our aging population with an incidence approaching 50 per 100 000 patient-years at a female:male ratio of ~3:1. Decisions surrounding surgical management are currently driven by age, hypercalcemia severity, presence of osteoporosis, renal insufficiency, or hypercalciuria with or without nephrolithiasis. Cardiovascular (CV) disease (CVD) is not systematically considered. This is notable since the parathyroid hormone (PTH) 1 receptor (PTH1R) is biologically active in the vasculature, and adjusted CV mortality risk is increased almost threefold in individuals with pHPT who do not meet contemporary recommendations for surgical cure. We provide an overview of epidemiology, pharmacology, and physiology that highlights the need to: (i) identify biomarkers that establish a healthy 'set point' for CV PTH1R signaling tone; (ii) better understand the pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic (PK-PD) relationships of PTH1R ligands in CV homeostasis; and (iii) incorporate CVD risk assessment into the management of hyperparathyroidism.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Secondary hyperparathyroidism remains the main complication of mineral and bone metabolism in patients with chronic kidney disease. In case of resistance to medical treatment (native and active vitamin D, calcium and calcimimetics), surgical parathyroidectomy is indicated. The aim of this retrospective study is to show the evolution of the incidence and results of surgical parathyroidectomy in our center between 1980 and 2020 as patient characteristics, diagnostic and therapeutic strategies have changed. PATIENTS AND METHODS We collected data from dialysis patients who had a first surgical parathyroidectomy between 2000 and 2020 (period 2) in the same surgical department and compared them with historical data between 1980 and 1999 (period 1) operated in one other center. RESULTS In period 1, 53 surgical parathyroidectomy were performed (2.78/year, 0 to 5, 8.5/1000 patients-year) vs.56 surgical parathyroidectomy in period 2 (2.8/year, 0 to 9, 8/1000 patients-year). The patients of the 2 periods were comparable except for the higher dialysis vintage in period 1 (149±170 vs.89±94 months; P=0.02). In comparison with dialysis patients not requiring surgical parathyroidectomy during the same period, patients who had surgical parathyroidectomy were younger, had higher dialysis vintage and lower diabetes prevalence, but more frequently carriers of glomerulopathy or polycystosis. Systematically performed in period 2, cervical ultrasound identified at least one visible gland in 78.6% of cases while the scintigraphy, performed only in 66% of cases, found at least one gland in 81% of cases. Twelve months after surgery, PTH > 300 pg/mL (marker of secondary hyperparathyroidism recurrence or surgery failure) was present in 30% of patients in period 1 vs. 5.3% in period 2. Hypoparathyroidism was also more frequently observed in period 2 (35.7 vs. 18.8%). Surgical complications were also higher in period 1. CONCLUSION Despite therapeutic and strategic advances, severe secondary hyperparathyroidism is still as common as ever. It is favored by excessively high PTH targets, by suboptimal prevention before dialysis and poor tolerance of calcimimetics. The surgical parathyroidectomy is effective and safe in the hands of a specialized team with an ultrasound and scintigraphic preoperative assessment.

Abstract
Parathyroidectomy has been the mainstay of treatment of severe hyperparathyroidism in patients with kidney failure until the introduction of calcimimetic. Several large observational studies demonstrated the improvement in patient outcomes after parathyroidectomy. The benefit of parathyroidectomy on vascular calcification remains largely unexplored. AIM To examine the association between parathyroidectomy and the progression of vascular calcification as well as overall survival in maintenance haemodialysis patients. METHOD This is a matched case-control study undertaken between 2012 and 2020. Patients who underwent parathyroidectomy were identified and matched 1:1 to non-parathyroidectomized (non-PTX) haemodialysis patients using propensity score matching method resulting in 120 patients in each arm. Aortic arch calcification (AoAC) score was determined annually in the posteroanterior chest x-ray. The average follow-up period was 38 months. RESULTS Baseline demographic, laboratory data and AoAC score were comparable among the two groups of patients. The prevalence of AoAC was 59% in the PTX group and 54% in the non-PTX group (p = .43). Progression of AoAC occurred in 33% in the PTX group and 47% in the non-PTX group (p = .04). Multivariate generalized linear model revealed parathyroidectomy as an independent protective factor [β (95% CI) -1.04 (-1.68, -0.41)] and increased serum calcium as a potentiating factor [β (95% CI) 0.62 (0.25, 0.1)] for progression of AoAC. Linear mixed models revealed an increase in AoAC score in both groups but between group comparisons indicated substantially slower progression in the PTX group. Rapid progression of AoAC was also observed more frequently among non-PTX patients. Death occurred in 7 and 16% in the PTX and non-PTX groups, respectively. Kaplan-Meier survival curve revealed better survival associated with parathyroidectomy (p = .01). More rapid progression of AoAC also correlated with worse survival. CONCLUSION Parathyroidectomy was associated with slow progression of vascular calcification in maintenance haemodialysis patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Microwave ablation is effective for severe secondary hyperparathyroidism, but the difference in efficacy between microwave ablation and parathyroidectomy remains unclear. In this multicenter retrospective cohort study, we compared the long-term clinical efficacy of microwave ablation and parathyroidectomy for severe secondary hyperparathyroidism undergoing hemodialysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS The patients were divided into microwave ablation and parathyroidectomy groups. The primary endpoint was the proportion of patients with intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) concentrations within the target range (100-600 pg/mL) during the efficacy assessment phase. The secondary endpoints were (i) differences in iPTH concentrations over time between the two groups, and (ii) decreases in iPTH concentrations over time in the two groups. RESULTS Microwave ablation was performed in 47/92 patients and parathyroidectomy in 45/92. Primary endpoint: iPTH concentrations within the target range were achieved during the efficacy assessment phase in 26/47 patients (55.3%) and in 14/45 (31.1%) patients in the microwave ablation and parathyroidectomy groups, respectively (p = .02). Secondary endpoints: (i) Mean iPTH concentrations during the efficacy assessment phase were significantly higher in the microwave ablation versus parathyroidectomy groups (649 ± 519 pg/mL versus 136 ± 228 pg/mL, respectively; p < .01). (ii) Mean decrease in iPTH concentration from baseline was 725 ± 605 pg/mL versus 1369 ± 478 pg/mL in the MWA versus parathyroidectomy groups, respectively (p < .01). CONCLUSIONS Ultrasound-guided percutaneous microwave ablation provides higher iPTH target-achieving rates than parathyroidectomy in patients with severe secondary hyperparathyroidism undergoing hemodialysis.

Abstract
Background Forearm autotransplantation after parathyroidectomy has turned into the standard method for secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) treatment in chronic kidney disease patients. Our study aimed to explore the effects of three methods including muscle, subcutaneous and muscle + subcutaneous transplant methods on SHPT. Methods Seventy five SHPT patients were enrolled and assigned into the muscle + subcutaneous (M + S) (n = 26), muscle (M) (n = 35), and subcutaneous (S) (n = 14) groups. The operation efficacy evaluation included preoperative and postoperative biological characteristics such as parathyroid hormone (PTH), serum phosphorus, serum calcium and alkaline phosphatase (ALP). The data were recorded from pre-operation time point to 1, 2, 3, 6, 12, 18, 24 month (mo) postoperation periods. After operation, short-form health survey (SF-36) scores was made for life quality identification at 1, 2, 3, 6, 12, 24 time points. Symptoms about SHPT including bone pain, fracture, pruritus, and coronary artery calcification were followed-up based on the scale. Results Compared with the preoperative record, all the M + S, M, and S groups showed postoperative decreased levels of PTH, serum phosphorus, serum calcium, calcium-phosphorus. In M + S group, the PTH and serum calcium level kept more steady compared with the M and S groups during a 24 mo duration observation. After this, a SF-36 score scale which represents the life quality show M + S group got more scores at 3, 6, 12, 18 and 24 mo points. At last, the incidence of SHPT associated symptoms including Bone pain, Fracture, Pruritus, and Coronary artery calcification in M + S group were decreased compared with M and S groups at 1, 3, 6, 12 and 24 mo post-operation time points. Conclusion M + S seems to be an efficient method for medical treatment of SHPT patients in the control of PTH and serum calcium. This mixed transplant strategy improves the biochemical characterizes compared with M and S groups in SHPT patients. Furthermore, the M + S method make beneficial on clinical outcomes and life quality of patients.

Abstract
Objective This study was performed to investigate the risk factors for severe hypocalcemia (SH) after total parathyroidectomy without autotransplantation (TPTX) in patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the records of 136 patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism treated by TPTX. The patients were categorized as having SH or non-SH based on their postoperative blood calcium concentration. The risk factors for SH were identified by comparing the clinical characteristics between the two groups and by performing multiple logistic regression analyses. Results After surgery, 46.0% of the patients had hypocalcemia and 31.7% had SH. Evidence of renal osteodystrophy on lumbar radiographs and the serum concentrations of intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH), calcium, and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were different between the two groups. The SH group had higher preoperative iPTH and ALP concentrations than the non-SH group. In addition, more patients with SH showed renal osteodystrophy. Logistic regression analyses indicated that preoperative hypocalcemia and a high ALP concentration were independent predictors of SH. Conclusion Preoperative hypocalcemia and a high ALP concentration were identified as risk factors for SH following TPTX.

Abstract
Background Secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) is a common complication in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients, and parathyroidectomy (PTX) is an effective treatment intervention of SHPT. However, the curative impact of PTX on left ventricular function still remains incompletely understood. To evaluate the impact of parathyroidectomy on left ventricular function in ESRD patients, we conducted this retrospective study. Methods Between Oct 1, 2010 and Oct 1, 2016, ESRD patients presented with SHPT who underwent parathyroidectomy were enrolled. We retrospectively collected the ultrasonic cardiogram parameter pre- and 1-year post-PTX, and analyzed the influence factor for the overturn of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and the improvement of ejection fraction% (EF%). Results In all the patients (135), the main ultrasonic cardiogram parameter dramatically improved after PTX. Compared with pre-PTX, the left ventricular mass (LVM) (172.82 (135.90, 212.91) g vs. 192.76 (157.56, 237.97) g, p<0.001) and the left ventricular mass index (LVMI) (107.01 (86.79, 128.42) g/m2 vs. 123.54 (105.49, 146.64) g/m2, p<0.001) significantly declined after 1 year of the PTX. Further, 43.75% patients diagnosed with LVH before the PTX have recovered from LVH. In the subgroup analysis of 35 patients with EF% ≤ 60% pre-PTX, EF% and fractional shortening% (FS%) significantly improved after 1 year of the PTX compared with pre-PTX (EF%: 64.90 ± 7.90% vs. 55.71 ± 4.78%, p<0.001; FS% 35.48 ± 6.34% vs. 29.54 ± 2.88%, p<0.001), and 82.86% patients underwent an improvement of left ventricular systolic function post 1year of the PTX. Conclusions tPTX+AT is an effective curative intervention of secondary hyperparathyroidism and can significantly overturn the LVH and increase the left ventricular systolic function.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of our study was to evaluate the role of preoperative US, CEUS, and 99mTc-MIBI scanning with SPECT/CT in localizing diseased parathyroid glands in cases of refractory secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT). MATERIAL AND METHODS Using pathological results as the gold standard, we compared the operative findings with the preoperative localization of each modality in 73 nodules and evaluated the accuracy, and sensitivity of each modality and combinations of the four modalities. RESULTS The sensitivity of US, CEUS, 99mTc-MIBI and SPECT/CT was 98.59%, 94.37%, 50.70% and 78.87%, respectively. US had the highest sensitivity of the four imaging methods and the diagnostic sensitivity of US and CEUS was superior to that of 99mTc-MIBI (p < 0.001 and p < 0.001) and SPECT/CT (p = 0.001 and p = 0.012). In addition, we found that the sensitivity of the combination of US with CEUS, US with 99mTc-MIBI and/or SPECT/CT, CEUS with 99mTc-MIBI and/or SPECT/CT, US with CEUS and two other imaging modalities (99mTc-MIBI and/or SPECT/CT) was 98.59%, 100%, 95.77%, and 100%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The combination of US with SPECT/CT is the best choice for the comprehensive preoperative localization of glands in refractory SHPT. CEUS can elevate the accuracy of US in differential diagnosis via the interpretation of dynamic microvascular features.

Abstract
Parathyroidectomy (PTX) remains an important intervention for dialysis patients with poorly controlled secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT), though there are only retrospective and observational data that show a mortality benefit to this procedure. Potential consequences that we seek to avoid after PTX include persistent or recurrent hyperparathyroidism, and parathyroid insufficiency. There is considerable subjectivity in defining and diagnosing these conditions, given that we poorly understand the optimal PTH targets (particularly post PTX) needed to maintain bone and vascular health. While lowering PTH after PTX decreases bone turnover, long-term changes in bone activity have been poorly explored. High turnover bone disease, usually present at the time a PTX is considered, often swings to a state of low turnover in the setting of sufficiently low PTH levels. It remains unclear if all low bone turnover equate with disease. However, such changes in bone turnover appear to predispose to vascular calcification, with positive calcium balance after PTX being a potential contributor. We know little of how the post-PTX state resets calcium balance, how calcium and VDRA requirements change or what kind of adjustments are needed to avoid calcium loading. The current consensus cautions against excessive reduction of PTH although there is insufficient evidence-based guidance regarding the management of chronic kidney disease - mineral bone disease (CKD-MBD) parameters in the post-PTX state. This article aims to compile existing research, provide an overview of current practice with regard to PTX and post-PTX chronic management. It highlights gaps and controversies and aims to re-orient the focus to clinically relevant contemporary priorities in CKD-MBD management after PTX.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a renal replacement therapy. One concern is whether patients on PD have a higher risk of sleep apnea (SA) due to intra-abdominal pressure increase and worsened ultrafiltration capacity. Despite this concern, to date, whether the risk of SA differs between PD, hemodialysis (HD), and groups without uremia is still uncertain. METHODS In this retrospective cohort study, data were obtained from the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan. This database enrolled almost all patients on dialysis in the country. A total of 7,645 incident patients on PD and 38,225 incident patients on HD were enrolled. In addition, 38,225 patients without uremia were selected as the comparison cohort. Individuals were monitored for the occurrence of SA until 2013. RESULTS The results showed that patients on PD, regardless of sex, all had a higher risk of SA than non-dialysis groups. In contrast, the risk of SA in patients on HD was not significantly different from that of patients without uremia. We also compared the risk of SA between patients on PD and HD directly. The results showed that male patients on PD had a significantly higher risk of SA risk than male patients on HD. However, the risk of SA did not differ between female patients on PD and HD. CONCLUSIONS Patients on PD should receive regular SA assessments and that an increased awareness and a higher index of suspicion for SA should be maintained in these patients, especially male patients.

Abstract
Secondary hyperparathyroidism, characterized by increased PTH synthesis and secretion, is often seen in advanced stages of chronic kidney disease. Excessive proliferation of parathyroid cells leads to the development of diffuse hyperplasia that subsequently progresses to nodular histology. Refractory hyperparathyroidism occurs when parathyroid glands fail to respond to medical therapy. Parathyroidectomy (PTX), surgical resection of parathyroid glands, is usually performed in cases of persistent serum levels of PTH above 1000 pg/mL associated with hypercalcemia or when hyperparathyroidism is refractory to conservative therapy. Parathyroidectomy can be carried out using different procedures: subtotal PTX or total PTX with or without parathyroid autotransplantation. Parathyroid surgery may have undesirable consequences due to PTH oversuppression, such as the development of adynamic bone disease; hungry bone syndrome is quite common after this surgery. However, PTX improves survival and parameters of mineral metabolism. Parathyroidectomy needs to be considered in those patients with severe hyperparathyroidism with a poor response to pharmacological treatment and with distinct undesirable effects of PTH on bone and mineral metabolism parameters.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION For patients with refractory secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT), parathyroidectomy (PTX) has received increasing attention. However, evidence-based medicine shows that there is still controversy regarding surgical methods, efficacy, and safety. We retrospectively analyzed the process of diagnosis and treatment in one patient with severe SHPT and long-term chronic renal failure (CRF), so as to further improve the therapeutic effect. CASE PRESENTATION A 61-year-old female with SHPT and CRF manifested as no urine for 18 years, underwent PTX 4 times since September 2010, with satisfactory final recovery. The first operation involved resection of 3 parathyroid glands in the normal position; the second operation involved removal of an ectopic parathyroid gland, combined with parathyroid gland autotransplantation; the third operation was performed to resect suspected recurrent parathyroid gland; the fourth operation involved partial excision of the autotransplanted parathyroid glands. CONCLUSION Accurate preoperative localized diagnosis and optimal surgical approach play key roles in the prevention and treatment of SHPT; postoperative recurrence of SHPT caused by ectopic or autotransplanted parathyroid gland should receive more attention.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Parathyroidectomy (PTx) is the definitive therapy for refractory secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT). The drastic effects of PTx on biochemical parameters of SHPT increases the possibility that this intervention will lead to a reduction in the adverse outcomes related to uncontrolled SHPT. RECENT FINDINGS The effect of PTx on mortality and cardiovascular outcomes among dialysis patients with severe SHPT have been evaluated in many observational studies from different regions of the world, including Asia, Europe, North America, and South America. In all but one small study, there was a significant association of PTx with lower all-cause mortality. In addition, in all studies, there was a trend in favor of PTx for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The effect of PTx on fractures has been evaluated in only one epidemiological study from the United States, which demonstrated a significant association of PTx and lower hip and combined fractures. SUMMARY Although randomized evidence is lacking, these highly consistent results may suggest a strong beneficial effect of PTx on long-term clinical outcomes and eliminate the potential concern of low parathyroid hormone after PTx.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Systemic inflammation has been implicated in complications and heightened mortality of patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) are widely available surrogate markers of inflammation. This study sought to delineate the changes in NLR and PLR after parathyroidectomy. METHODS A total of 213 patients undergoing initial parathyroidectomy from 2010 to 2015 for secondary hyperparathyroidism were identified from a prospectively maintained clinical database. Among 183 patients free of persistent or recurrent disease, follow-up NLR and PLR were available for analysis in 85 patients. RESULTS In the whole study population, the baseline NLR was positively correlated with male sex, total white blood cell count, height, serum phosphorus, and calcium-phosphorus product levels. The baseline PLR was positively correlated with platelet count, serum phosphorus, and calcium-phosphorus product levels and negatively associated with patient age. Postoperative parathyroid hormone levels were positively correlated with NLR and PLR at follow-up. For patients who had successful parathyroidectomy, there was a decrease in NLR (P = 0.0006), PLR (P = 0.0003), and platelet count (P = 0.033), whereas hemoglobin significantly increased (P = 0.0002) after surgery. Those with persistent or recurrent hyperparathyroidism had no change in NLR, PLR, hemoglobin, total white blood cell, or platelet count. CONCLUSIONS Successful parathyroidectomy is associated with a decrease in NLR and PLR. The modulatory effects of parathyroidectomy on systemic inflammation may partially explain the benefits of surgery in secondary hyperparathyroidism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Our study aims to explore the effect of total parathyroidectomy (PTX) with forearm autotransplantation (FAT) on the quality of life and recurrence of secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) in chronic kidney disease patients. METHODS A total of 104 chronic kidney disease patients with SHPT were enrolled and divided into the PTX (n = 62) and PTX + FAT (n = 42) groups. The operation efficacy was evaluated by analyzing preoperative and postoperative values, including levels of intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH), serum phosphorus, serum calcium, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), calcium-phosphorus product, signs and symptoms, and MOS 36-item short-form health survey (SF-36) scores. Moreover, complications and recurrences were followed up for 12 months after the operation. Binary logistic regression was to present the risk factors for the recurrence of chronic kidney disease patients with SHPT. RESULTS Compared with the preoperative values, the PTX and PTX + FAT groups showed decrease postoperative levels of iPTH, serum phosphorus, serum calcium, calcium-phosphorus product, bone pain, and skin pruritus at all time periods. The PTX and PTX + FAT groups demonstrated decreased ALP, fracture or deformity, and coronary artery calcification at 1 month, decreased short stature at 3 months after the operation but increased SF-36 score after operation. Compared with the PTX group, the level of iPTH decreased and the levels of serum calcium, calcium-phosphorus product increased at 3, 6, and 12 months after the operation in the PTX + FAT group. The levels of ALP, fracture or deformity, short stature, and SF-36 decreased separately at 1 week and 6 and 12 months after the operation, along with the decrease of coronary artery calcification and the recurrence rate, respectively, at 6 and 12 months after the operation in the PTX + FAT group when compared with those in the PTX group. Logistic regression analysis evidenced that the preoperative iPTH level, SF-36 score, and operation type were the risk factors for the recurrence of chronic kidney disease with SHPT. CONCLUSION Total PTX combined with FAT is more effective in improving the quality of life and reducing the recurrence of chronic kidney disease with SHPT than PTX alone.

Abstract
For more than 6 decades, many patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) have undergone surgical parathyroidectomy (sPTX) for severe secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) mainly based historical clinical practice patterns, but not on evidence of outcome.We aimed in this meta-analysis to evaluate the benefits and harms of sPTX in patients with SHPT. We searched MEDLINE (inception to October 2016), EMBASE and Cochrane Library (through Issue 10 of 12, October 2016) and website clinicaltrials.gov (October 2016) without language restriction. Eligible studies evaluated patients reduced glomerular filtration rate (GFR), below 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 (CKD 3–5 stages) with hyperparathyroidism who underwent sPTX. Reviewers working independently and in duplicate extracted data and assessed the risk of bias. The final analysis included 15 cohort studies, comprising 24,048 participants. Compared with standard treatment, sPTX significantly decreased all-cause mortality (RR 0.74 [95% CI, 0.66 to 0.83]) in End Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD) patients with biochemical and / or clinical evidence of SHPT. sPTX was also associated with decreased cardiovascular mortality (RR 0.59 [95% CI, 0.46 to 0.76]) in 6 observational studies that included almost 10,000 patients. The available evidence, mostly observational, is at moderate risk of bias, and limited by indirect comparisons and inconsistency in reporting for some outcomes (eg. short term adverse events, including documented voice change or episodes of severe hypocalcaemia needing admission or long-term adverse events, including undetectable PTH levels, risk of fractures etc.). Taken together, the results of this meta-analysis would suggest a clinically significant beneficial effect of sPTX on all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in CKD patients with SHPT. However, given the observational nature of the included studies, the case for a properly conducted, independent randomised controlled trial comparing surgery with medical therapy and featuring many different outcomes from mortality to quality of life (QoL) is now very strong.

Abstract
Aim Patients with end‐stage renal disease (ESRD) who received parathyroidectomy (PTX) had persistently reduced levels of parathyroid hormone. This study investigated the risk of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in patients with ESRD who underwent PTX using a nationwide health insurance claims database. Methods Of all ESRD patients, we selected 1047 individuals who had undergone PTX between 2000 and 2008 as the PTX group and 4188 patients who did not undergo PTX (non‐PTX group) matched by propensity score. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression analysis was conducted for assessing the excess ACS risk for the PTX group compared to the non‐PTX group. Results The mean follow‐up periods were 4.63 and 4.04 years for the PTX and non‐PTX groups, respectively. A significant reduction in the risk of ACS (adjusted hazard ratio = 0.74, 95% confidence interval = 0.57–0.96) was observed for the ESRD patients after PTX. Conclusions Parathyroidectomy is associated with reduced risk of ACS in patients with ESRD. From a national health insurance claims database, this study matched patients receiving dialysis who had a parathyroidectomy to patients who did not, using a propensity score method. They demonstrate that patients who had a parathyroidectomy were less likely to experience an acute coronary syndrome in the ensuing 4 years.
