Abstract
Eight rhenium(I) tricarbonyl aqua complexes with the general formula fac-[Re(CO)3(N,N'-bid)(H2O)][NO3] (1-8), where N,N'-bid is (2,6-dimethoxypyridyl)imidazo[4,5-f]1,10-phenanthroline (L1), (indole)imidazo[4,5-f]1,10-phenanthroline (L2), (5-methoxyindole)-imidazo[4,5-f]1,10-phenanthroline (L3), (biphenyl)imidazo[4,5-f]1,10-phenanthroline (L4), (fluorene)imidazo[4,5-f]1,10-phenanthroline (L5), (benzo[b]thiophene)imidazo[4,5-f]1,10-phenanthroline (L6), (5-bromothiazole)imidazo[4,5-f]1,10-phenanthroline (L7), and (4,5-dimethylthiophene)imidazo[4,5-f]1,10-phenanthroline (L8), were synthesized and characterized using 1H and 13C{1H} NMR, FT-IR, UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy, and ESI-mass spectrometry, and their purity was confirmed by elemental analysis. The stability of the complexes in aqueous buffer solution (pH 7.4) was confirmed by UV/Vis spectroscopy. The cytotoxicity of the complexes (1-8) was then evaluated on prostate cancer cells (PC3), showing a low nanomolar to low micromolar in vitro cytotoxicity. Worthy of note, three of the Re(I) tricarbonyl complexes showed very low (IC50 = 30-50 nM) cytotoxic activity against PC3 cells and up to 26-fold selectivity over normal human retinal pigment epithelial-1 (RPE-1) cells. The cytotoxicity of both complexes 3 and 6 was lowered under hypoxic conditions in PC3 cells. However, the compounds were still 10 times more active than cisplatin in these conditions. Additional biological experiments were then performed on the most selective complexes (complexes 3 and 6). Cell fractioning experiments followed by ICP-MS studies revealed that 3 and 6 accumulate mostly in the mitochondria and nucleus, respectively. Despite the respective mitochondrial and nuclear localization of 3 and 6, 3 did not trigger the apoptosis pathways for cell killing, whereas 6 can trigger apoptosis but not as a major pathway. Complex 3 induced a paraptosis pathway for cell killing while 6 did not induce any of our other tested pathways, namely, necrosis, paraptosis, and autophagy. Both complexes 3 and 6 were found to be involved in mitochondrial dysfunction and downregulated the ATP production of PC3 cells. To the best of our knowledge, this report presents some of the most cytotoxic Re(I) carbonyl complexes with exceptionally low nanomolar cytotoxic activity toward prostate cancer cells, demonstrating further the future viability of utilizing rhenium in the fight against cancer.

Abstract
Two new nickel(II) and copper(II) complexes of 2-(Furan-2-yl)-1H-Imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]Phenanthroline (FIP) and 2-(thiophen-2-yl)-1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline (TIP), imidazophen derivatives were synthesized. The structures of the compounds were determined by UV-visible and FT-IR spectroscopic methods and elemental analysis. The biological activities of Ni and Cu complexes, as anticancer agents, were tested against chronic myelogenous leukemia cell line, K562, at micromolar concentration. The MTT studies showed Cc50 values are 21 and 160 µM for Cu and Ni(II) complexes, respectively; suggesting that Ni (II) complex has Cc50 almost seven times of that obtained for cisplatin. Biological activity of the Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes were also assayed against selective microorganisms by disc diffusion method. These results showed that the Cu(II) complex is antifungal agent but Ni(II) complex has antibacterial activity.

Abstract
Heterocyclic phenanthrimidazole derivative, 2-(4-fluorophenyl)-1-p-tolyl-1H-imidazo[4,5-f] [1,10] phenanthroline (FPTIP) has been synthesized and characterised by NMR, mass and CHN analysis. The FPTIP was evaluated concerning their solvatochromic properties and molecular optical nonlinearities. Their electric dipole moment (μ), polarizability (α) and hyperpolarizability (β) have been calculated theoretically and the results indicate that the extension of the π-framework of the ligands has an effect on the NLO properties. The energies of the HOMO and LUMO levels and the molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) energy surface studies have exploited the existence of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) within the molecule.

Abstract
Two new heterocyclic imidazole derivatives consists of π-conjugated system attached to a phenanthrimidazole moiety have been synthesized in moderate yield by the condensation of 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione with substituted aromatic aldehydes and 4-methoxyaniline in the presence of ammonium acetate in ethanol medium. The photophysical properties of these imidazole derivatives were studied in several solvents. These derivatives were evaluated concerning their solvatochromic properties and molecular optical nonlinearities. Their electric dipole moment (μ) and hyperpolarizability (β) have been calculated theoretically and the results indicate that the extension of the π-framework of the ligands has an effect on the NLO properties of these imidazole derivatives. The non-zero tensor components of these imidazole derivatives reveal that they possess potent non-linear optical (NLO) behavior. The energies of the HOMO and LUMO levels and the molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) energy surface studies have exploited the existence of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) within the molecule.

Abstract
Some new heterocyclic chromophores have been synthesized by greenway method. These chromophores have been evaluated by analysing their solvatochromic properties and molecular optical nonlinearities. Their hyperpolarizability (β) has been calculated theoretically. The non-zero tensor components of the imidazole derivatives reveal that they possess potent non-linear optical (NLO) behaviour. Measurements of absorption solvatochromism have been interpreted with Marcus and Reichardt-Dimroth solvent functions to estimate the transition dipoles. Good correlation exists between absorption as well as fluorescence wavenumbers obtained by the multi-component linear regression employing the Taft and Catalan solvent parameters with the experimental values.

Abstract
A new Ru(II) complex of [Ru(bpy)2(Hmspip)]Cl2 {in which bpy=2,2'-bipyridine, Hmspip=2-(4-(methylsulfonyl)phenyl)-1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline} have been synthesized and characterized. The ground- and excited-state acid-base properties of [Ru(bpy)2(Hmspip)]Cl2 and its parent complex of [Ru(bpy)2(Hpip)]Cl2 {Hpip=2-phenyl-1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline} have been studied by UV-visible (UV-vis) and emission spectrophotometric pH titrations. [Ru(bpy)2(Hmspip)]Cl2 acts as a calf thymus DNA intercalators with a binding constant of 4.0×10(5) M(-1) in buffered 50 mM NaCl, as evidenced by UV-vis and luminescence titrations, steady-state emission quenching by [Fe(CN)6]4-, DNA competitive binding with ethidium bromide, reverse salt titrations and viscosity measurements.

Abstract
Reaction of FcCH(2)PO(3)H(2) [Fc=(eta(5)-C(5)H(5))Fe(eta(5)-C(5)H(4))] (H(2)FMPA) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) with Cd(OAc)(2).2 H(2)O or ZnSO(4).7 H(2)O in methanol in the presence of triethylamine resulted in the formation of two new ferrocenylphosphonate metal-cage complexes [M(4)(fmpa)(4)(phen)(4)] 7 CH(3)OH (M=Cd 1, M=Zn 2). Both structures contain two kinds of isomeric tetranuclear metal phosphonate cages, which are linked to one another by pi-pi interactions between the phen molecules. In 1, the Cd1, Cd3, and Cd4 atoms are all pentacoordinate, while the Cd2 atom is coordinated by four oxygen atoms from three phosphonate ligands and two nitrogen atoms from the chelating phen in a distorted octahedral geometry. Four Cd atoms from each unit are interconnected through bridging phosphonate ligands with different coordination modes, such as 5.221, 4.211, and 2.11 (Harris notation), yielding a {Cd(4)} cage. In 2, each Zn atom is coordinated by three oxygen atoms from three phosphonate ligands and two nitrogen atoms from phen, leading to a distorted square-pyramidal geometry. The four Zn atoms of each isomeric unit are also interconnected through four bridging phosphonate ligands to yield a {Zn(4)} cage. Fluorescent studies indicate that ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer photoluminescence is observed for 1, while the emission bands of 2 can be assigned to an admixture of ligand-to-ligand and metal-to-ligand charge transfer. Solution-state differential pulse voltammetry indicates that the half-wave potentials of the ferrocenyl moieties in 1 and 2 have different deviations relative to the relevant H(2)FMPA ligand. This may be because the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) in 1 is located in the FMPA(2-) groups, while in 2 the HOMO is located in the phen and Zn(II) groups, so the Fe(II) centers in complex 1 are more easily oxidized to Fe(III) centers than those of 2. The third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) measurements show that both 1 and 2 exhibit strong third-order NLO self-focusing effects; hence, they are promising candidates for NLO materials. By calculating the component of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals of 1 and 2, we confirmed that the co-planar phen rings control their optical nonlinearity, while the H(2)FMPA ligands and metal ions have only a weak influence on their NLO properties.

Abstract
Three metal-organic polymers, [CoCl2(bpfp)]n 1, {[NiCl2(bpfp)2](H2O)3}n 2 and [ZnCl2(bpfp)]n 3 (bpfp = N,N'-bis(3-pyridylformyl)piperazine), are formed by the self-assembly of the flexible bpfp with MCl2 (M = Co, Ni, Zn), respectively. X-Ray single-crystal structural analysis reveals that polymer 1 exhibits a novel grid network, in which the grid is composed of segments of bpfp and cobalt ions. Polymer 2 consists of 2D rhombohedral grids, the dimensions of the grid are 15.782 x 12.434 A2 and the diagonal-to-diagonal distances are 13.186 x 25.169 A2. In polymer 3, infinite wavelike chains are extended to 2D supramolecular arrays via C-H...Cl hydrogen bonds. The third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) behaviors of 1-3 and bpfp were investigated in dilute DMF solution by Z-scan measurement. The results show that 1, 2 and 3 exhibit good third-order NLO properties, which are quite different from bpfp that shows weak NLO behavior. This paper demonstrates that metal ions can strongly influence the crystal structures and third-order NLO properties of polymers.

Abstract
A new Ru(II) complex, [Ru(bpy)(2)(dhipH3)](ClO4)(2) (in which bpy=2,2'-bipyridine, dhipH(3)=3,4-dihydroxy-imidado[4,5-f][1,10]-phenanthroline), was synthesized and characterized, and the pH effect on the emission spectra of the complex was studied. The interaction of the complex with calf thymus DNA was investigated by UV-visible and emission spectroscopy, and viscosity measurements. The results suggest that the complex acted as a sensitive luminescent pH sensor and a strong ct-DNA intercalator with an intrinsic binding constant of (4.0+/-0.7) x 10(5) M(-1) in buffered 50 mM NaCl.

Abstract
The compound [[(acac)2Ru]3(L)] (1) undergoes three well-separated one-electron oxidation and reduction processes. The EPR results indicate electron removal from the ruthenium(II) centres on oxidation and the occupation of a largely L-based molecular orbital on reduction. In spite of well-separated (DeltaE > or = 340 mV) oxidation no obvious intervalence charge transfer bands were detected in the Vis, NIR or IR regions, suggesting very weak electronic coupling between the metal centres in the mixed-valent intermediates 1+ and 1(2+). The separated (DeltaE > or = 540 mV) stepwise reduction produces weak near-infrared features associated with partially occupied pi* orbitals of L, the unusually high g anisotropy in the EPR spectrum of 1- is attributed to the occupation of a degenerate MO by the unpaired electron.

Abstract
The trinuclear complexes [(L'-'")2RuII)3(mu3-L)](ClO4)3, [1] (ClO4)3-[3](ClO4)3 (L = trianionic form of 1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-trithiol; N(p)C(5)H(4)N=N(a)-C6H4(R), R = H (L'), m-Me (L"), p-Me (L'")) and the analogous mononuclear complex [(L')2RuII(NC5H4S-)]ClO4 [4] ClO4 were synthesized. Crystal structures of [1](ClO4)3 and [4]ClO4 were determined. [1](3+)-[3](3+) exhibit three successive oxidative couples corresponding to Ru(II)Ru(II)Ru(III)<==>Ru(II)Ru(II)Ru(II); Ru(II)Ru(III)Ru(III)<==>Ru(II)Ru(II)Ru(III); Ru(III)Ru(III)Ru(III)<==>Ru(II)Ru(III)Ru(III) where the mixed valent states are moderately coupled. The complexes display multiple reductions associated with the azo functions of the ancillary ligands (L'-'"). The energy of the Ru(II)-based lowest energy MLCT transitions (533-558 nm) involving the pi* level of azoimine chromophore of L'-'" varies depending on the nuclearity as well as substituents in the ligand framework and follows the order: [1](3+) > [2](3+) > [3](3+) > [4](+). The complexes exhibit reasonably high third-order non-linear optical properties with gamma= (0.90-2.45) [times] 10(-29) esu. The interactions of the trinuclear complexes [((L')2RuII)3(mu3-L)]3+[1]3+, [((bpy)2RuII)3((mu3-L)]3+[5]3+ and [((phen)2RuII)3((mu3)-L)]3+[6]3+(bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine and phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) with the circular and linear forms of p-Bluescript DNA show reduced ethidium bromide fluorescence on gel electrophoresis.

Abstract
Three novel coordination polymers [Pb(bbbm)(2)(NO(3))(2)](n) (bbbm = 1,1'-(1,4-butanediyl)bis-1H-benzimidazole) 1, [Zn(bbbt)(NCS)(2)](n) (bbbt = 1,1'-(1,4-butanediyl)bis-1H-benzotriazole) 2, and [Zn(pbbt)(NCS)(2)](n) (pbbt = 1,1'-(1,3-propylene)bis-1H-benzotriazole) 3 were synthesized and structurally characterized. Polymer 1 exhibits a two-dimensional rhombohedral grid network structure, the dimensions of the grid are 14.274 x 14.274 A, and the diagonal-to-diagonal distances are 24.809 x 14.125 A. Polymer 2 possesses a concavo-convex chain structure different from those of the known one-dimensional polymers, which are linear chain, zigzag chain, helical chain, double-stranded chain, and ladder chain. Polymer 3 exhibits a one-dimensional zigzag chain structure, and these chains were packed as an.ABAB. layered structure. The third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of polymers1, 2, and 3 were determined with a 7-ns pulsed laser at 532 nm. 1 shows strong third-order NLO absorptive and refractive properties, and its alpha(2) and n(2) values were calculated to be 5.8 x 10(-)(9) m W(-)(1) and 4.67 x 10(-)(18) m(2) W(-)(1) in a 3.4 x 10(-)(4) mol dm(-)(3) DMF solution, respectively. Both 2 and 3 exhibit weaker NLO absorption and strong refractive properties, and their n(2) values are 4.53 x 10(-)(18) m(2) W(-)(1) for 2 in a 5.2 x 10(-)(4) mol dm(-)(3) DMF solution and 3.02 x 10(-)(18) m(2) W(-)(1) for 3 in a 4.35 x 10(-)(4) mol dm(-)(3) DMF solution. The chi((3)) values of 1, 2, and 3 were calculated to be 1.67 x 10(-)(11), 1.62 x 10(-)(11), and 1.08 x 10(-)(11) esu, respectively, and the values are larger than those of the reported coordination polymers. We deduce that the valence shell structures of metal ions may have some influence on the strength of NLO properties, and discuss the relationships between the crystal structures of coordination polymers and the observed NLO properties.

Abstract
In this paper, treatment of 1,1'-(1,4-butanediyl) bis-1H-benzotriazole (bbbt) and KSCN with Co(II), Mn(II), or Cd(II) afforded three two-dimensional rhombohedral grid coordination polymers [M(bbbt)(2)(NCS)(2)](n)(M = Co, 1; Mn, 2; Cd, 3). The two-dimensional rhombohedral grids are parallel to the crystallographic ac plane. The rhombohedral grid consists of 44-membered rings of M(4)(bbbt)(4), and gives the dimensions of 12.913 x 10.764 A for polymer 1, 13.106 x 10.797 A for polymer 2, and 13.256 x 10.870 A for polymer 3. The three polymers' third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties were determined by Z-scan technique in DMF solution. The results show that all three polymers show very large NLO absorption and strong NLO refraction properties. The third-order NLO absorptive coefficients alpha(2) are 5.4 x 10(-9) m W(-1) for polymer 1, 5.2 x 10(-9) m W(-1) for polymer 2, and 5.0 x 10(-9) m W(-1) for polymer 3. The alpha(2) values are larger than those of all the reported cluster compounds. The NLO refractive index values n(2) of the three polymers are 5.73 x 10(-19), 3.55 x 10(-19), and 3.07 x 10(-19) m(2) W(-1), respectively. Their hyperpolarizability gamma values are calculated to be 2.40 x 10(-30) esu for polymer 1, 1.52 x 10(-30) esu for polymer 2, and 1.50 x 10(-30) esu for polymer 3. The gamma values are comparable to those of clusters and better than those of organometallic compounds, semiconductors, and fullerene.
