Abstract
A new synthetic strategy for macrocycles bearing multiple coordination moieties was developed. A self-assembled double helix structure, composed of two linear strands bearing 2,2'-bipyridine units and Cu(I) ions, provided access to macrocycles bearing a defined number of 2,2'-bipyridine moieties and a defined ring size, via an olefin-metathesis reaction between two linear strands in the helix. The double helix structure improved the selectivity of the macrocycle synthesis by bringing the reaction points in close proximity even in the case of large macrocycles.

Abstract
Sulfur has been important in dynamic covalent chemistry (DCC) since the beginning of the field. Mainly as part of disulfides and thioesters, dynamic sulfur-based bonds (DSBs) have a leading role in several remarkable reactions. Part of this success is due to the almost ideal properties of DSBs for the preparation of dynamic covalent systems, including high reactivity and good reversibility under mild aqueous conditions, the possibility of exploiting supramolecular interactions, access to isolable structures, and easy experimental control to turn the reaction on/off. DCC is currently witnessing an increase in the importance of DSBs. The chemical flexibility offered by DSBs opens the door to multiple applications. This Review presents an overview of all the DSBs used in DCC, their applications, and remarks on the interesting properties that they confer on dynamic chemical systems, especially those containing several DSBs.

Abstract
The syntheses and properties of expanded 4‐tert‐butyl‐mercaptocalix[4]arenes, in which the methylene linkers are replaced by −CH2NRCH2− or −CH2NRCH2− and −CH2NRCH2CH2CH2NRCH2− units, are described. The new macrocycles were obtained in a step‐wise manner, utilizing fully protected, i. e. S‐alkylated, derivatives of the oxidation‐sensitive thiophenols in the cyclisation steps. Reductive cleavage of the macrobicyclic or macrotricyclic intermediates (6, 7, 11) afforded the free thiophenols (H48, H49, and H412) in preparative yields as their hydrochloride salts. The protected proligands can exist in two conformations, resembling the “cone” and “1,3‐alternate” conformations found for the parent calix[4]arenes. The free macrocycles do not show conformational isomerism, but are readily oxidized forming intramolecular disulfide linkages. Preliminary complexation experiments show that these expanded mercaptocalixarenes can serve as supporting ligands for tetranuclear thiolato clusters.

Abstract
Bis-norbornene and bis-cyclobutene with different kinds of linkers have been extensively used for the synthesis of double stranded ladderphanes under ruthenium- or molybdenum-catalyzed ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) conditions. The key to the success relies on the selective formation of comb-like polynorbornenes or polycycloubtenes, where pendants are all aligned towards similar direction. This minireview summarizes various methods (chemical methods, spectroscopic means, and nonlinear optical measurements) for determining the comb-like conformations of pendants on these rigid-rod polymers. The approach is based on the proximal relationship between adjacent pendants. Interactions between these adjacent pendants would enable a change in chemical reactivity.

Abstract
An unusual trithioorthoformate-capped cyclophane cage was assembled via antimony-activated iodine oxidation of thiols as confirmed by 1 H-NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. The disulfide bridges can undergo desulfurization with hexamethylphosphorous triamide (HMPT) at ambient temperature to capture a trithioether cyclophane cage capped by the trithioorthoformate. In both cages a methine proton points directly into the small cavity. This unexpected structure is hypothesized to have formed as a result of haloform insertion during oxidation.

Abstract
We have reviewed recent advances in the synthesis of porphyrin cages and nanorings with flexible links, as well as their applications in host–guest chemistry and catalysis. Template-directed strategies have greatly facilitated the synthesis of porphyrin cages and nanorings with high complexities. Meanwhile, the unique features of flexible porphyrin cages and nanorings having a good balance between rigidity and flexibility make them especially suitable to encapsulate fullerenes, multipyridyl compounds and other guests.

Abstract
Dynamic combinatorial chemistry has emerged as a promising tool for the discovery of complex receptors in supramolecular chemistry. At the heart of dynamic combinatorial chemistry are the reversible reactions that enable the exchange of building blocks between library members in dynamic combinatorial libraries (DCLs) ensuring thermodynamic control over the system. If more than one reversible reaction operates in a single dynamic combinatorial library, the complexity of the system increases dramatically, and so does its possible applications. One can imagine two reversible reactions that operate simultaneously or two reversible reactions that operate independently. Both these scenarios have advantages and disadvantages. In this contribution, we show how disulfide exchange and boronic ester transesterification can function simultaneous in dynamic combinatorial libraries under appropriate conditions. We describe the detailed studies necessary to establish suitable reaction conditions and highlight the analytical techniques appropriate to study this type of system.

Abstract
The one-step synthesis of D3h -symmetric cyclic porphyrin trimers 1 composed of three 2,2'-[4,4'-bis(methoxycarbonyl)]bipyridyl moieties and three porphyrinatozinc moieties was achieved from a nickel-mediated reductive coupling of meso-5,15-bis(6-chloro-4-methoxycarbonylpyrid-2-yl)porphyrinatozinc. Although cyclic trimers 1 were obtained as a mixture that included other cyclic and acyclic porphyrin oligomers, an extremely specific separation was observed only for cyclic trimers 1 when using columns of silica gel modified with pyrenylethyl, cyanopropyl, and other groups. Structural analysis of cyclic trimers 1 was carried out by means of NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. Treatment of an η(3) -allylpalladium complex with a cyclic trimer gave a tris(palladium) complex containing three η(3) -allylpalladium groups inside the space, which indicated that the bipyridyl moieties inside the ring could work as bidentate metalloligands.

Abstract
Reversible covalent bond formation under thermodynamic control adds reactivity to self-assembled supramolecular systems, and is therefore an ideal tool to assess complexity of chemical and biological systems. Dynamic combinatorial/covalent chemistry (DCC) has been used to read structural information by selectively assembling receptors with the optimum molecular fit around a given template from a mixture of reversibly reacting building blocks. This technique allows access to efficient sensing devices and the generation of new biomolecules, such as small molecule receptor binders for drug discovery, but also larger biomimetic polymers and macromolecules with particular three-dimensional structural architectures. Adding a kinetic factor to a thermodynamically controlled equilibrium results in dynamic resolution and in self-sorting and self-replicating systems, all of which are of major importance in biological systems. Furthermore, the temporary modification of bioactive compounds by reversible combinatorial/covalent derivatisation allows control of their release and facilitates their transport across amphiphilic self-assembled systems such as artificial membranes or cell walls. The goal of this review is to give a conceptual overview of how the impact of DCC on supramolecular assemblies at different levels can allow us to understand, predict and modulate the complexity of biological systems.

Abstract
A pivotal guest role: a new porphyrin polymer, poly(PorZn⋅DD) (pink/purple), composed of a porphyrinatozinc and a porphyrin double-decker complex as a repeating unit was synthesized. In poly(PorZn⋅DD), porphyrinatozinc complexes recognize a divalent amine (tan/red) to induce an intramolecular pivoting motion through the rotation of porphyrin double-decker complexes and the polymer undergoes shortening and compaction.

Abstract
With the aim of extending the usefulness of an existing biomimetic catalytic system, cobalt porphyrin catalytic units with thiol linkers were heterogenized via chemical grafting to silicon wafers and utilized for the catalytic oxidation of hydroquinone to p-benzoquinone. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to analyze the morphology and composition of the heterogeneous catalyst. The results of the catalytic oxidation of hydroquinone obtained with porphyrins grafted on silicon were compared with those obtained earlier with the same catalyst in homogeneous phase and immobilized on gold. It was found that the catalysis could run over 400 h, without showing any sign of deactivation. The measured catalytic activity is at least 10 times higher than that measured under homogeneous conditions, but also 10 times lower than that observed with the catalytic unit immobilized on gold. The reasons of this discrepancy are discussed in term of substrate influence and overlayer organization. The silicon-immobilized catalyst has potential as an advanced functional material with applications in oxidative heterogeneous catalysis of organic reactions, as it combines long-term relatively high activity with low cost.
