Abstract
This study assessed dyadically the relationship between psychosocial impact of infertility experienced by 87 couples and individual coping strategies, perceived social support and some medical factors. Although problem-focused strategies emerged as positive, certain side effects on partner were revealed. Social support was related to psychosocial outcomes in a positive way, cognitive component of coping strategies resulted as a prominent factor on individual's adjustment as well as the partner's role. Findings suggest the convenience of promoting the awareness about the effects of each partner's feelings, behaviors and beliefs on his/her individual's well-being in this field due to the interdependent context in which they are. Infertility counselors may foster this process by evaluating and educating to them about the functionality of these factors.

Abstract
In this investigation a new non-separative kinetic-spectroflourimetric method is proposed for the determination of lysine (lys), leucine (leu) and phenylalanine (phe) enantiomers as their o-phthaldialdehyde (OPA) derivatives in the presence of an optically active chiral thiol compound, 1-mercapto-2-propanol (MP). At ambient temperature and in the borate buffer media of pH 9.6, MP, OPA, as highly selective fluorogenic reagents, and amino acid (AA) enantiomers reacts with each other to yield two fluorescent diasteriomers of D and L-AA with maximum difference in fluorescence intensity at about 450 nm. To achieve information from the small spectral changes, the data are analyzed by Multivariate Curve Resolution Alternating Least Squares (MCR-ALS) method. Linear calibration curves are achieved to distinct D and L-lys, leu and phe in different mole ratios by applying appropriate constraints in MCR-ALS procedures. This is the first application of MCR-ALS in determination of enantiomeric excess (ee) using OPA/MP adduct as chiral reagent, which benefits from direct time dependent-fluorescence spectral analysis and does not require prior separation of chiral analytes. Both the cross-validated correlation coefficient (Q2) and root mean squares error of prediction (RMSEP) indicated satisfactory prediction ability of this method.

Abstract
The negative health impact of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and differences in pharmacological activity of enantiomers of chiral molecules in humans highlights the need for analysis of PAHs and their chiral analogue molecules in humans. Herein, the first use of cyclodextrin guest-host inclusion complexation, fluorescence spectrophotometry, and chemometric approach to PAH (anthracene) and chiral-PAH analogue derivatives (1-(9-anthryl)-2,2,2-triflouroethanol (TFE)) analyses are reported. The binding constants (Kb), stoichiometry (n), and thermodynamic properties (Gibbs free energy (ΔG), enthalpy (ΔH), and entropy (ΔS)) of anthracene and enantiomers of TFE-methyl-β-cyclodextrin (Me-β-CD) guest-host complexes were also determined. Chemometric partial-least-square (PLS) regression analysis of emission spectra data of Me-β-CD-guest-host inclusion complexes was used for the determination of anthracene and TFE enantiomer concentrations in Me-β-CD-guest-host inclusion complex samples. The values of calculated Kb and negative ΔG suggest the thermodynamic favorability of anthracene-Me-β-CD and enantiomeric of TFE-Me-β-CD inclusion complexation reactions. However, anthracene-Me-β-CD and enantiomer TFE-Me-β-CD inclusion complexations showed notable differences in the binding affinity behaviors and thermodynamic properties. The PLS regression analysis resulted in square-correlation-coefficients of 0.997530 or better and a low LOD of 3.81×10-7M for anthracene and 3.48×10-8M for TFE enantiomers at physiological conditions. Most importantly, PLS regression accurately determined the anthracene and TFE enantiomer concentrations with an average low error of 2.31% for anthracene, 4.44% for R-TFE and 3.60% for S-TFE. The results of the study are highly significant because of its high sensitivity and accuracy for analysis of PAH and chiral PAH analogue derivatives without the need of an expensive chiral column, enantiomeric resolution, or use of a polarized light.

Abstract
The permeability barrier of nuclear pore complexes (NPCs) controls all exchange of macromolecules between the cytoplasm and the cell nucleus. It consists of phenylalanine-glycine (FG) repeat domains apparently organized as an FG hydrogel. It has previously been demonstrated that an FG hydrogel derived from the yeast nucleoporin Nsp1p reproduces the selectivity of authentic NPCs. Here we combined time-resolved optical spectroscopy and X-ray scattering techniques to characterize such a gel. The data suggest a hierarchy of structures that form during gelation at the expense of unstructured elements. On the largest scale, protein-rich domains with a correlation length of ~16.5 nm are evident. On a smaller length scale, aqueous channels with an average diameter of ~3 nm have been found, which possibly represent the physical structures accounting for the passive sieving effect of nuclear pores. The protein-rich domains contain characteristic β-structures with typical inter-β-strand and inter-β-sheet distances of 1.3 and 0.47 nm, respectively. During gelation, the formation of oligomeric associates is accompanied by the transfer of phenylalanines into a hydrophobic microenvironment, supporting the view that this process is driven by a hydrophobic collapse.

Abstract
We report the first combined use of analytical spectroscopy, guest-host chemistry, and multivariate regression analysis for determination of enantiometric composition of multicomponent samples of chiral analytes. Sample solutions containing multicomponent analytes of ephedrine, tryptophan, propranolol, and proline of varying enantiomeric composition with beta-cyclodextrin (BCD) or methyl-beta-cyclodextrin (Me-BCD) as chiral host molecules were investigated using ultraviolet (UV)-visible spectroscopy. The interactions of enantiomers of chiral analytes with chiral hosts resulted in the formation of transient diastereomeric inclusion complexes with varying spectral properties. Multivariate analysis using partial-least-square (PLS) regression was used to correlate subtle changes in the UV-visible spectra of the guest-host complexes with the enantiomeric composition of the calibration samples. These PLS regressions were carefully optimized and then used to predict the enantiomeric composition of multicomponent chiral analytes of validation samples. The results of these validation studies demonstrate the predictive ability of the regression models for determination of future enantiomeric composition of samples. The accuracy of the models to correctly predict the enantiomeric composition of samples, evaluated by use of the root mean square percent relative error (RMS%RE) was analyte and chiral host dependent. In general, better prediction of enantiomeric composition of samples and low RMS%RE values were obtained when Me-BCD was used as the chiral host. The analyses procedure reported here is simple, rapid, and inexpensive. In addition, this approach does not require prior separation of chiral analytes, thus reducing analysis time and eliminating the need for expensive chiral columns.

Abstract
The spectroscopic properties of a chiral boronic acid based resorcinarene macrocycle employed for chiral analysis were investigated. Specifically, the emission and excitation characteristics of tetraarylboronate resorcinarene macrocycle (TBRM) and its quantum yield were evaluated. The chiral selector TBRM was investigated as a chiral reagent for the enantiomeric discrimination of amino acids using steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy. Chiral recognition of amino acids in the presence of the macrocycle was based on diastereomeric complexes. Results demonstrated that TBRM had better chiral discrimination ability for lysine as compared to the other amino acids. Partial least squares regression modeling (PLS-1) of spectral data for macrocycle-lysine guest-host complexes was used to correlate the changes in the fluorescence emission for a set of calibration samples consisting of TBRM in the presence of varying enantiomeric compositions of lysine. In addition, validation studies were performed using an independently prepared set of samples with different enantiomeric compositions of lysine. The results of multivariate regression modeling indicated good prediction ability of lysine, which was confirmed by a root mean square percent relative error (RMS%RE) of 5.8%.

Abstract
A novel spectropolarimeter, based on modification of an ordinary, inexpensive, multiwavelength ultraviolet (UV)-visible-near-infrared (NIR) spectrophotometer, is described and applied to the determination of sucrose, sucrose inversion, and enantiomeric composition of solutions of (R)-(+)-limonene and (S)-(-)-limonene. The instrument has no moving parts, and optical rotation measurements are encoded as an apparent absorbance. Apparent absorbance measurements can be combined with multivariate statistical analysis over a wide spectral range, and a background correction technique that employs the sample as its own blank provides an effective means of correcting for the presence of chromophores that also absorb over the wavelengths of interest. The instrument was tested against an ordinary polarimeter and showed good performance with both colorless and colored samples.

Abstract
Novel fluorescent chiral molecular micelles (FCMMs) were synthesized, characterized, and employed as chiral selectors for enantiomeric recognition of non-fluorescent chiral molecules using steady state fluorescence spectroscopy. The sensitivity of the fluorescence technique allowed for investigation of low concentrations of chiral selector (3.0 x 10(-5) M) and analyte (5.0 x 10(-6) M) to be used in these studies. The chiral interactions of glucose, tartaric acid, and serine in the presence of FCMMs poly(sodium N-undecanoyl-L-tryptophanate) [poly-L-SUW], poly(sodium N-undecanoyl-L-tyrosinate) [poly-L-SUY], and poly(sodium N-undecanoyl-L-phenylalininate) [poly-SUF] were based on diastereomeric complex formation. Poly-L-SUW had a significant fluorescence emission spectral difference as compared to poly-L-SUY and poly-L-SUF for the enantiomeric recognition of glucose, tartaric acid, and serine. Studies with the hydrophobic molecule alpha-pinene suggested that poly-L-SUY and poly-L-SUF had better chiral discrimination ability for hydrophobic analytes as compared to hydrophilic analytes. Partial-least-squares regression modeling (PLS-1) was used to correlate changes in the fluorescence emission spectra of poly-L-SUW due to varying enantiomeric compositions of glucose, tartaric acid, and serine for a set of calibration samples. Validation of the calibration regression models was determined by use of a set of independently prepared samples of the same concentration of chiral selector and analyte with varying enantiomeric composition. Prediction ability was evaluated by use of the root-mean-square percent relative error (RMS%RE) and was found to range from 2.04 to 4.06%.

Abstract
In this work, a novel strategy was constructed to determine the enantiomeric composition of chiral substances discriminated by bovine serum albumin (BSA) based on the UV-vis spectra of the receptor-ligand mixtures coupled with partial least squares (PLS-1) analysis. Taking tryptophan (Trp) enantiomer as an example, when 20 microM BSA was used, the enantiomeric composition was accurately determined with concentration of only 100 nM and the corresponding enantiomeric excess as high as 98% (or -98%), which is relatively more sensitive than in literature. Furthermore, the BSA-based approach was also used to predict the enantiomeric composition of other chiral compounds, such as phenylalanine (Phe), tyrosine (Tyr), alanine (Ala), cysteine (Cys), DOPA and propranolol (Prop). The results fully demonstrate that BSA is effective in determination of enantiomeric composition of some chiral compounds.

Abstract
A novel spectrophotometric method for the determination of capsaicinoids in habanero pepper extracts is described that does not require prior analyte separation. The method uses partial-least-squares (PLS-1) multivariate regression modeling techniques in conjunction with ordinary UV absorption spectral data obtained on alcoholic extracts of habanero peppers (Capsicum chinese). The PLS-1 regression models were developed by correlating the known total concentration of the two major capsaicinoids (capsaicin and dihydrocapsaicin) in the extracts as determined by high-performance liquid chromatography with the spectral data. The regression models were subsequently validated with laboratory-prepared test sets. The validation studies revealed that the root-mean-square error of prediction varied from 4 to 8 ppm, based on the results obtained from models prepared from nine test sets. Once a regression model has been developed and validated, analyses of the extracts can be accomplished rapidly by ordinary spectrophotometric procedures without any prior separation steps.

Abstract
Steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy was employed to investigate the use of chiral polymeric surfactants as chiral selectors in chiral analysis by multivariate regression modeling of spectral data. Partial-least-squares regression modeling (PLS-1) was used to correlate changes in the fluorescence spectral data of 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol (BOH), 1,1'-binaphthyl-2,2'-diamine (BNA), or 2,2,2-trifluoroanthrylethanol (TFA) in the presence of poly(sodium N-undecanoyl-L-leucylvalinate), poly(sodium N-undecanoyl-L-leucinate) or poly(sodium N-undecanoyl-L-valinate) as the enantiomeric composition of the chiral analytes was varied. The regression models produced from the spectral data were validated by determining the enantiomeric composition of independently prepared test solutions. The ability of the model to correctly predict the enantiomeric composition of future samples was evaluated using the root-mean-square percent-relative error (RMS%RE) of prediction. In terms of RMS%RE, the ability of the model to accurately predict the enantiomeric composition of future samples was dependent on the chiral analyte, the polymeric surfactant used, and the surfactant medium, and ranged between 1.57 and 6.10%. Chiral analyte concentrations as low as 5 x 10(-6) M were found to give regression models with good predictability.
