Abstract
In this study, we investigated reversible intermolecular proton shifting (IPS) coupled with spin transition (ST) in a novel FeII complex. The host FeII complex and the guest carboxylic acid anion were connected by intermolecular hydrogen bonds (IHBs). We extended the intramolecular proton transfer coupled ST phenomenon to the intermolecular system. The dynamic phenomenon was confirmed by variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, neutron crystallography, and infrared spectroscopy. The mechanism of IPS was further validated using density functional theory calculations. The discovery of IPS-coupled ST in crystalline molecular materials provides good insights into fundamental processes and promotes the design of novel multifunctional materials with tunable properties for various applications, such as optoelectronics, information storage, and molecular devices.

Abstract
By X-ray diffraction analysis and IR spectroscopy, it was established here that vinyl carbocations C3H5+/C4H7+ with carborane counterion CHB11Cl11- form stable monosolvates C3H5+⋅C3H6/C4H7+⋅C4H8 with molecules of alkenes C3H6/C4H8. They contain molecular group =C+⋯Hδ--Cδ+= with a new type of bond formed by the H atom of the H-C= group of the alkene with the C atom of the C+=C group of the carbocation. The short C+----Cδ+ distance, equal to 2.44 Å, is typical of that of X----X in proton disolvates (L2H+) with an quasi-symmetrical X-H+⋯X moiety (where X = O or N) of basic molecule L. The nature of the discovered bond differs from that of the classic H-bond by an distribution of electron density: the electron-excessive Hδ- atom from the (=)C-H group of the alkene is attached to the C+ atom of the carbocation, on which the positive charge is predominantly concentrated. Therefore, it can be called an inverse hydrogen bond.

Abstract
In this study, the effect of different numbers of Li+ interacting with various sites of DNA base pairs (adenine-thymine (AT) and cytosine-guanine (GC)) on the base pair structures, the strength of hydrogen bonding between the bases, and spectroscopic properties (IR and absorption spectra) of the base pairs was investigated. Two quantum computational analyses, the natural bonding orbitals (NBO) and the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), were used to follow the change in the strength of hydrogen bonds between the bases in each pair. The type of base pair's site interacting with Li+ showed different effects on the change in the strength of the hydrogen bonds between the bases. The IR and absorption spectra of the lithiated base pairs were calculated and compared with those of bare base pairs. This comparison provided the changes in the spectra as a fingerprint for the structural identification of different lithiated base pairs. Also, the determination of the change in the strength of hydrogen bonds in the lithiated base pairs compared to their bare base pairs. In the other part of this study, the effect of the hydration of the attached Li+ in the structure of lithiated base pairs on the strength of their hydrogen bonds and spectra was investigated.

Abstract
Lignin is the main plant cell wall component responsible for recalcitrance in the process of lignocellulosic biomass conversion into biofuels. The recalcitrance and insolubility of lignin in different reaction media are due in part to the hydrogen bonds and π interactions that hold syringyl (S) and guaiacyl (G) units together and promote the formation of stable water-bridged dimeric complexes (WBDCs): S⋯G and S⋯S, in native lignin. The current understanding of how each type of interaction influences the stability of these complexes within lignin native cell walls is still limited. Here, we found by DFT calculations that hydrogen bonding is more dominant than π-stacking interaction between aromatic rings of WBDCs. Although there is a stronger interaction of hydrogen bonds between subunits and water and higher π-stacking interaction in the S⋯S complex compared to the S⋯G complex, the former complex is less thermodynamically stable than the latter due to the entropic contribution coming from the methoxy substituents in the S-unit. Our results demonstrate that the methoxylation degree of lignin units does not significantly influence the structural geometries of WBDCs; if anything, an enhanced dispersion interaction between ring aromatics results in quasi-sandwich geometries as found in "coiled" lignin structures in the xylem tissue of wood. In the same way as that with ionic liquids, polar solvents can dissolve S-lignin by favorable interactions with the aliphatic hydroxyl group in the α-position as the key site or the aromatic hydroxyl group as the secondary site.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of two fluorinated 3,6-diaza-9-hydroxy-9-borafluorene oxonium acids featuring improved hydrolytic stability and the strong electron-deficient character of the diazaborafluorene core is reported. These boracycles served as precursors of fluorescent spiro-type complexes with (O,N)-chelating ligands which revealed specific properties such as delayed emission, white light emission in the solid state and photocatalytic performance in singlet oxygen-mediated oxidation reactions.

Abstract
CONTEXT Proton transfer in acid-base systems is not well understood. Some acid-base reactions do not proceed to the extent that is expected from the difference in the pKa values between the base and acid in aqueous solutions, yet some do. In that regard, we have computationally studied the process of proton transfer from the acids of varying strength (benzenesulfonic acid (BSu), methansulfonic acid (MsO), and sulfuric acid (SA)) to the amines with different numbers of propyl substituents on the nitrogen atom (propylamine (PrA), dipropylamine (DPrA), and tripropylamine (TPrA)) upon complexation. Density functional theory calculations were used to thoroughly examine the energetic and structural aspects of the molecular complexes and/or ionic pairs resulting from the acid-base interaction. The potential energy curves along the proton transfer coordinate in these acid-amine systems were analyzed. The change in free energies accompanying the molecular complexes and ionic pair formations was calculated, and the relationship between the energy values and the ΔРА parameter (difference in proton affinity of the acid anion and amine) was established. The larger ΔРА values were found to be unfavorable for the formation of ionic pairs. Using structural, energy, QTAIM, and NBO analyses, we determined that the hydrogen bonds in the molecular complexes PrA-MsO and PrA-BSu are stronger than those in their corresponding ionic pairs. The ionic pairs with the TPrA cation possess the strongest hydrogen bonds of all the ionic pairs being studied, regardless of the anion. The results showed that hydrogen bonding interactions in the molecular complexes contribute significantly to the energies of the acid-base interaction, while in the ionic pairs, the most important energy contribution comes from Coulomb interactions, followed by hydrogen bonding and dispersion forces. The ionic pairs with propylammonium, dipropylammonium, and tripropylammonium cations have stronger ion-ion interactions than tetrapropylammonium (TetPrA)-containing ionic pairs with the same anions. This effect rises with the order of the cation: TetPrA → TPrA → DPrA → PrA, and the sequence of anions is SA → BSu → MsO. The results obtained here expand the concept of acid-base interaction and provide an alternative to experimental searches for suitable acids and bases to obtain new types of protic ionic liquids. METHODS All quantum-chemical calculations were carried out by using the DFT/B3LYP-GD3/6-31++G(d,p) level as implemented in the Gaussian 09 software package. For the resulting structures, the electron density distribution was analyzed by the "atoms in molecules" (QTAIM) and the natural bond orbital (NBO) methods on the wave functions obtained at the same level of theory by AIMAll Version 10.05.04 and Gaussian NBO Version 3.1 programs, respectively.

Abstract
Pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP)-dependent enzymes have been extensively studied for their ability to fine-tune PLP cofactor electronics to promote a wide array of chemistries. Neutron crystallography offers a straightforward approach to studying the electronic states of PLP and the electrostatics of enzyme active sites, responsible for the reaction specificities, by enabling direct visualization of hydrogen atom positions. Here we report a room-temperature joint X-ray/neutron structure of aspartate aminotransferase (AAT) with pyridoxamine 5'-phosphate (PMP), the cofactor product of the first half reaction catalyzed by the enzyme. Between PMP NSB and catalytic Lys258 Nζ amino groups an equally shared deuterium is observed in an apparent low-barrier hydrogen bond (LBHB). Density functional theory calculations were performed to provide further evidence of this LBHB interaction. The structural arrangement and the juxtaposition of PMP and Lys258, facilitated by the LBHB, suggests active site preorganization for the incoming ketoacid substrate that initiates the second half-reaction.

Abstract
This paper presents the synthesis of eight new pyrazole azo dyes using ethyl 5-amino-3-methyl-1H-pyrazole-4-carboxylate as the diazotization component and various active methylene derivatives as coupling components. These new azo dyes were characterized by spectroscopic (FT-IR, UV-VIS), and spectrometric (1H NMR, 13C NMR, MS) analyses. The dye structures were modeled by the MMFF94s force field and quantum chemical density functional theory (DFT) calculations using the B3LYP functional and the 6-311G(d,p) basis set, in the gas phase. Weak electrostatic hydrogen bonds for the azo and hydrazo dye tautomers were found in the ground state. The CIS, TD (using the B3LYP and M06-2X functionals), and ZINDO methods were used to estimate the dye UV-VIS spectra in ethanol, which were compared with the experimental ones. The anti-configuration arrangement of the π-bonds and the presence of the prevalent hydrazo dye tautomer were supported by the computed 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectra. A good accordance between the experimental and predicted absorption maxima and chemical shifts was observed. Color investigations using the CIEL*a*b* space were conducted for all dyes in powder and for their mixtures in water-based acrylic resins. The results confirm the newly synthesized dyes' color properties and that they might be used for light color paints in the varnishes industry.

Abstract
Short strong hydrogen bonds (SSHBs) play crucial role in many chemical processes. Recently, as the representative of SSHBs, [F-H-F]- was experimentally observed. [F-H-F]- has a symmetric structure, which can be described as a H+ acid shared by two terminal F- donors (F--H+-F-). To explore whether two identical donors are bound to result in SSHBs, we performed theoretical studies on a series of compounds (L-H+-L) with two identical electron donors (L corresponds to donors containing group 14, 15, 16 and 17 elements). The results show that identical donors do not definitely lead to SSHBs. Instead, typical hydrogen bonds also exist. We found that both electronegativity and basicity contribute to the patterns of hydrogen bonds, where more electronegative and weaker donors benefit to SSHBs. Besides, it was found that zero-point energies also respond to the hydrogen bonding systems. This systemic work is expected to provide more insights into SSHBs.

Abstract
Using the molecular tailoring approach, a total energy scale for the push-pull effect in the range from -40 to 100 kcal/mol is created for the wide series of neutral, charged and doubly charged compounds on the chalcone platform. Taking into account similar energy scale for hydrogen bonds, the strength of the push-pull effect is ranked in the seven categories, ranging from negative (anti-push-pull) to very weak and very strong push-pull effect. It is demonstrated that the molecular properties of chalcone can be tuned prior synthesis due to the created energy scale for the push-pull effect. The single bonds of the π-spacer in the chalcones are shortened, the double ones are lengthened, and the C=O bond vibrations are red shifted when the push-pull effect is enhanced along the energy scale. The HOMO and LUMO energies change systematically while the HOMO-LUMO energy gap narrows as the strength of the push-pull effect increases.

Abstract
Within the framework of the density functional theory approach, we studied the relationship between the chemical nature of intramolecular hydrogen bonds (HBs) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) parameters, J-couplings and 1H-chemical shifts [δ(1H)], of the atoms involved in such bonds in o-hydroxyaryl Schiff bases during the proton transfer process. For the first time, the shape of the dependence of the degree of covalence in HBs on 1J(N-H), 1J(O-H), 2hJ(O-N), and δ(1H) during the proton transfer process in o-hydroxyaryl Schiff bases was analyzed. Parameters obtained from Bader's theory of atoms in molecules were used to assess the dependence of covalent character in HBs with both the NMR properties. The influence of π-electronic delocalization on 2hJ(N-O) under the proton transfer process was investigated. 2hJ(O-N) in a Mannich base was also studied in order to compare the results with an unsaturated system. In addition, substituent effects on the phenolic ring were investigated. Our results indicate that the covalent character of HBs on both sides of the transition state undergoes a smooth exponential increase as the δ(1H) moves downfield. The degree of covalence of the N⋯H (O⋯H) bond increases linearly as 1J(N-H) (1J(O-H)) becomes more negative, even after reaching the transition state. Non-vanishing values of spin dipolar (SD) and paramagnetic spin orbital terms of 2hJ(O-N) show that π-electronic delocalization has a non-negligible effect on tautomeric equilibrium and gives evidence of the presence of the resonance assisted HB.Variation of the SD term of 2hJ(O-N) follows a similar pattern as the change in the para-delocalization aromaticity index of the chelate ring.

Abstract
Resonance-assisted hydrogen bond (RAHB) theory was studied in some substituted pyrimidines in which encompass O-H⋯Y unit (Y= O and S). Alteration of substituents (R 1, R2, R3 = H, C2H, C2F) on pyrimidine ring changes properties of electron charge density at this ring and influences indirectly on strength of intramolecular hydrogen bond (IHB) interactions in the mentioned structures. Then, IHB energies were estimated using cis-trans method (CTM), related rotamers method (RRM), Espinosa' method (EM), and a viewpoint based on properties of electron charge densities at ring critical point (RCP) of RAHB ring. Moreover, the estimated IHB energies with these methods were compared with those obtained using modified Espinosa' method (MEM), Iogansen's relationship, and chemical shift-based method to find more consistent method with the proposed viewpoint based on RCP characteristics. The linear correlations between the all estimated IHB energies and some hydrogen bonding descriptors such as geometrical, spectroscopic, topological, and molecular orbital factors were examined. Results indicated that the IHB energies that obtained by way of MEM and Iogansen's relationship have better correlations with hydrogen bonding descriptors. Also, there are good consistencies between results of these two methods with viewpoint based on properties of RCPs. Therefore, IHB energies can suitably estimate using properties of RCPs in heterocyclic molecular systems especially in cases that rotation around C-C/CC bonds makes additional interactions in isomers and influences on accuracy of calculated IHB energies using approaches such as CTM and RRM.

Abstract
DFT/B3LYP calculations have been performed on series of molecules of natural products containing cinnamon and citrus, namely, cinnamic aldehyd, ascorbic acid and hesperidin. This theoretical investigation predicts the biological activities of mixtures between cinnamon and ascorbic acid and between cinnamon and hesperidin based on already proven values for these molecules. The strength of the intermolecular interactions is evaluated in term of energy decomposition of the total interaction energy ΔE int between molecules, which are mainly governed by electrostatic interactions. The HOMO-LUMO gaps explain that the possible charge transfer interactions that take place within the molecules are responsible for the molecular reactivity of the studied molecules. The chemical hardness, the chemical potential and the electrophilicity indexes are good indicators for biological activities showing their improvement to that of cinnamon itself. The mixture of hesperidin and cinnamon could be an excellent blood thinner with the regard to its polarity's enhancement.

Abstract
The electronic structure of substituted molecules is governed, to a significant extent, by the substituent effect (SE). In this paper, SEs in selected nucleic acid base pairs (Watson-Crick, Hoogsteen, adenine-adenine) are analyzed, with special emphasis on their influence on intramolecular interactions, aromaticity, and base pair hydrogen bonding. Quantum chemistry methods-DFT calculations, the natural bond orbital (NBO) approach, the Harmonic Oscillator Model of Aromaticity (HOMA) index, the charge of the substituent active region (cSAR) model, and the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM)-are used to compare SEs acting on adenine moiety and H-bonds from various substitution positions. Comparisons of classical SEs in adenine with those observed in para- and meta-substituted benzenes allow for the better interpretation of the obtained results. Hydrogen bond stability and its other characteristics (e.g., covalency) can be significantly changed as a result of the SE, and its consequences are dependent on the substitution position. These changes allow us to investigate specific relations between H-bond parameters, leading to conclusions concerning the nature of hydrogen bonding in adenine dimers-e.g., H-bonds formed by five-membered ring nitrogen acceptor atoms have an inferior, less pronounced covalent nature as compared to those formed by six-membered ring nitrogen. The energies of individual H-bonds (obtained by the NBO method) are analyzed and compared to those predicted by the Espinosa-Molins-Lecomte (EML) model. Moreover, both SE and H-bonds can significantly affect the aromaticity of adenine rings; long-distance SEs on π-electron delocalization are also documented.

Abstract
Density function theory calculations are employed to study the interaction of amines bearing different numbers of alkyl substituents of different sizes on the nitrogen atom with sulfuric and methanesulfonic acids. The proton affinities of the studied amines are calculated, and it is shown that the higher the value is, the more probable is its protonation. The most stable structures of the ion pairs resulting from the acid-base interaction are obtained and characterized. The geometric parameters of the ion pairs and the characteristics derived from the NBO and QTAIM analysis show that there are hydrogen bonding interactions between the cation and the anion. The hydrogen bonding character of the ion pairs and the strength of the interaction between the ions strongly depend on the nature of the cation itself. The interaction between the ions in the ion pairs weakens with the increase in the cation size. The trend of change in the structural parameters of the H-bonds and energetic characteristics in the cation series for the studied ion pairs is not dependent on the nature of the anion.

Abstract
Imine and enamine bonds decorate the skeleton of numerous reagents, catalysts, and organic materials. However, it is difficult to isolate at will a single tautomer, as dynamic equilibria occur easily, even in the solid state, and are sensitive to electronic and steric effect, including π-conjugation and H-bonding. Here, using as model Schiff bases generated from salicylaldehydes and TRIS in a set of linear free energy relationships (LFER), we disclose how the formation of either imines or enamines can be controlled and provide a comprehensive framework that captures the structural underpinning of this prediction. This work highlights the potentiality of tailor-made designs en route to compounds with desirable functionality.

Abstract
A number of 5-acyl rhodanines and thiorhodanines with bulky acyl groups (pivaloyl and adamantoyl), not previously available, have been synthesized. The compounds are shown to exist in the enol form. Structures have been calculated using both the MP2 approach and the B3LYP-GD3BJ functional and the 6-311++G(d,p) basis set. Hydrogen bond energies are estimated by subtracting energies of a structure with the OH group turned 180° from those of the intramolecularly hydrogen-bonded one. Properties such as OH chemical shifts, two-bond isotope effects on 13 C chemical shifts, electron densities at the bond critical point from atoms in molecules analysis, and the hydrogen bond energies show that the sterically hindered compounds have stronger hydrogen bonds than methyl or isopropyl derivatives. The combination of oxygen and sulfur derivatives enables a detailed analysis of hydrogen bond energies.

Abstract
A number of o-hydroxy aromatic aldehydes have been synthesized to illustrate the effect of steric compression and O···O distances on the intramolecular hydrogen bond and the hydrogen bond energies. Hydrogen bond energies have been calculated using the 'hb and out' method using either the MP2 method or the B3LYP functional with the basis set 6-311++G(d,p). However, several compounds cannot be treated this way. Hydrogen bond energies are also determined using electron densities at bond critical points and these results are in good agreement with the results of the 'hb and out' model. Two-bond deuterium isotope effects on 13C chemical shifts are suggested as an experimental way to obtain information on hydrogen bond energies as they easily can be measured. Isotope effects on aldehyde proton chemical shifts have also been measured. The former show very good correlation with the hydrogen bond energies and the latter are related to short O···O distances. Short O···O distances can be obtained as the result of short C=C bond lengths, conjugative effects, and steric compression of the aldehyde group. Short O···O distances are in general related to high hydrogen bond energies in these intramolecularly hydrogen-bonded systems of resonance assisted hydrogen bond (RAHB) type.

Abstract
MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ calculations were performed on hydrides, fluorides, and chlorides of 1,8-bis(dichloroboryl)naphthalene and 1,2-bis(dichloroboryl)benzene. The theoretical analysis of BHB−, BFB−, and BClB− arrangements occurring in these complexes and classified as bifurcated triel bonds was partly based on decomposition of the energy of interaction. The latter was carried out for structures optimized using the DFT method. The complexes analyzed were characterized by a partly covalent character of the links to the hydride and halide anions; these anions strongly influenced the geometry of the complexes. The boron centers’ links for the neutral 1,8-bis(dichloroboryl)naphthalene and 1,2-bis(dichloroboryl)benzene molecules were characterized by approximately trigonal and planar configurations, while for anionic complexes, tetrahedral configurations were observed. The crystal structures of compounds related to species calculated here were found in the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD).

Abstract
Mechanoresponsive luminescent (MRL) materials have attracted considerable attention because of their potential applications in mechanical sensors, memory chips, and security inks; MRL materials possessing high efficiency and multicolor emission qualities are especially interesting. In this Letter, we found 1,2,3,4-tetraphenyl-1,3-cyclopentadiene (TPC) crystal exhibited both pressure-induced emission enhancement (PIEE) and multicolor behavior. In addition, infrared spectroscopy analysis indicated that the ring-opening reaction of the phenyl ring occurred when pressure was beyond 24.7 GPa. The reaction was promoted from 24.7 to 35.9 GPa, which resulted in the redder irreversible color change for the sample released from 35.9 GPa than from 24.7 GPa. The results regarding the mechanoresponsive behavior of TPC offered a deep insight into PIEE and multicolor properties from the structural point of view and inspired the idea of capturing different colors by hydrostatic pressure, which will facilitate the design of and search for high-performance MRL materials.

Abstract
The nature of the hydrogen bond, HB, as such is still unknown, though a few of its most fundamental features has been uncovered during the last few decades. At the moment, it is possible to obtain reliable results for only a few of its broadest properties, like magnetic properties. They could give new insights into the physics underlying the strength and features of HBs. In this article we analyze the electronic origin of the NMR spectroscopic parameters of malonaldehyde, MA, and some substituted MAs. These substituted MAs are such that the H-bonds are assisted by one of two phenomena: resonance, RAHB, or charge, CAHB. We have studied the dependences of these parameters on two of the main factors which contribute the most to both phenomena, the geometrical and electronic factors, and found out how they can be used to characterize RAHB or CAHB by means of reliable theoretical calculations. We show that in the set of compounds analyzed here (i) the shielding of the proton of the H-bond can be used as a measure of the strength of the HB and (ii) the relation between the contact and non-contact mechanisms of J-couplings between donor and acceptor atoms is a reliable descriptor of whether the H-bond is resonance assisted or charge assisted.

Abstract
This work studies the underlying nature of H-bonds (HBs) of different types and strengths and tries to predict binding energies (BEs) based on the properties derived from wave function analysis. A total of 42 HB complexes constructed from 28 neutral and 14 charged monomers were considered. This set was designed to sample a wide range of HB strengths to obtain a complete view about HBs. BEs were derived with the accurate coupled cluster singles and doubles with perturbative triples correction (CCSD(T))(T) method and the physical components of the BE were investigated by symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (SAPT). Quantum theory of atoms-in-molecules (QTAIM) descriptors and other HB indices were calculated based on high-quality density functional theory wave functions. We propose a new and rigorous classification of H-bonds (HBs) based on the SAPT decomposition. Neutral complexes are either classified as "very weak" HBs with a BE ≥ -2.5 kcal/mol that are mainly dominated by both dispersion and electrostatic interactions or as "weak-to-medium" HBs with a BE varying between -2.5 and -14.0 kcal/mol that are only dominated by electrostatic interactions. On the other hand, charged complexes are divided into "medium" HBs with a BE in the range of -11.0 to -15.0 kcal/mol, which are mainly dominated by electrostatic interactions, or into "strong" HBs whose BE is more negative than -15.0 kcal/mol, which are mainly dominated by electrostatic together with induction interactions. Among various explored correlations between BEs and wave function-based HB descriptors, a fairly satisfactory correlation was found for the electron density at the bond critical point (BCP; ρBCP ) of HBs. The fitted equation for neutral complexes is BE/kcal/mol = - 223.08 × ρBCP /a. u. + 0.7423 with a mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 14.7%, while that for charged complexes is BE/kcal/mol = - 332.34 × ρBCP /a. u. - 1.0661 with a MAPE of 10.0%. In practice, these equations may be used for a quick estimation of HB BEs, for example, for intramolecular HBs or large HB networks in biomolecules. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract
We have investigated, using two-component relativistic density functional theory (DFT) at ZORA-SO-BP86 and ZORA-SO-PBE0 level, the occurrence of relativistic effects on the 1 H, 13 C, and 15 N NMR chemical shifts of 1-methylpyridinium halides [MP][X] and 1-butyl-3-methylpyridinium trihalides [BMP][X3 ] ionic liquids (ILs) (X=Cl, Br, I) as a result of a non-covalent interaction with the heavy anions. Our results indicate a sizeable deshielding effect in ion pairs when the anion is I- and I3 - . A smaller, though nonzero, effect is observed also with bromine while chlorine based anions do not produce an appreciable relativistic shift. The chemical shift of the carbon atoms of the aromatic ring shows an inverse halogen dependence that has been rationalized based on the little C-2s orbital contribution to the σ-type interaction between the cation and anion. This is the first detailed account and systematic theoretical investigation of a relativistic heavy atom effect on the NMR chemical shifts of light atoms in the absence of covalent bonds. Our work paves the way and suggests the direction for an experimental investigation of such elusive signatures of ion pairing in ILs.

Abstract
The microsolvation and photophysics of 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (3AT) after excitation to the light-absorbing S2(nπ*) state were studied by using resonance Raman spectroscopy and single component artificial force-induced reaction (SC-AFIR) in a global reaction route mapping (GRRM) strategy. The vibrational spectra were assigned on the basis of experimental data and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The resonance Raman spectra of 3AT were measured to probe the excited state structural dynamics in the Franck-Condon region. The conformations of 3AT(CH3CN)1, 3AT(CH3OH)2, and 3AT(H2O)2 clusters were determined by combining vibrational spectrum experiments and B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) computations. DFT calculations were carried out to obtain the minimal excitation energies of the lower-lying singlet excited states, and the curve-crossing points. It was revealed that the short-time structural dynamics of 3AT were dominated by the N-N stretching coordinates. An excited state decay mechanism is proposed: 3AT is initially excited to the S2(nπ*) state, then the conical intersection (CI) of the S2(nπ*)/S1(ππ*) potential energy surfaces is crossed, and 3AT then decays to the lower solvent-dependent excited state S1(ππ*). It subsequently returns to the S0 state, accompanied by a large Stokes fluorescence shift, which was interpreted as the stabilized S1(ππ*) excited state bonding to several water molecules via intermolecular hydrogen bonding.

Abstract
A theoretical investigation on the interaction of various sulfides and their fluorinated counterparts (H2S, HSF, F2S, CH3SH, CH3SF, CH2FSH, CH2FSF, NH2SH, NH2SF) with atomic chlorine has been carried out using density functional theory (DFT) based LC-BLYP/aug-cc-pVTZ and sophisticated ab initio CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVQZ methods. The present study is intended to discuss the influence of the substituents implanted at the sulfur atom on the bonding parameters. The optimized geometries reveal that intermolecular S···Cl distances are short and range between 2.423 and 2.561 Å. A strong contraction of the S-F bond is also predicted. Two-center-three-electron S···Cl bonds are formed; the interaction energies are large and range from -33.9 to -70.1 kJ mol-1. Very surprisingly, the interaction energies are greater and the intermolecular distances are shorter for F-substituted sulfides than for unsubstituted ones. This is in complete contrast with the lower proton affinities and less negative electrostatic potentials of fluorinated sulfides. AIM analysis, the charge transfer from the sulfur atom to the Cl atom, and the spin densities on the Cl and S atoms are considered to explain this unusual behavior. The hyperconjugation energies from the LP(F) to the σ*(S-Cl) antibonding orbital can be considered as one of the stabilizing factors for the greater stability of the fluorinated complexes over the nonfluorinated ones.

Abstract
The equilibrium geometry of the 2,5-bis-[2-(pyridin-2-yl)-vinyl]-1[Formula: see text]-pyrrole calculated at the MP2/6-311[Formula: see text]G([Formula: see text],[Formula: see text]) level of theory evidences the breaking of one of the components in the three-centered intramolecular hydrogen bond due to the steric strain. For this reason, the three-centered intramolecular hydrogen bonding turns out to be asymmetric interaction involving the major and minor components. However, the reversible switching between these components under an external impact is also possible. Two different stable states with unequal geometric and electronic structure are observed in the derivatives of the 2,5-bis-[2-(pyridin-2-yl)-vinyl]-1[Formula: see text]-pyrrole. These molecules represent novel molecular switches operating due to the pendulum-like transition between the nonequivalent two-centered components of the overcrowded three-centered intramolecular hydrogen bond. Implantation of hydrogen bond as a unit of the molecular scale device enhances potential of molecular electronics and could serve as a step towards the construction of artificial biological ensembles.
